One year after the British Columbia government introduced a new compensation model for family physicians, a B.C. family medicine practitioner says she is already seeing positive changes.
Dr. Robin Craven, a family physician in Oliver, B.C., told CBC News that changes to the payment model have alleviated some of the longstanding pressures on the province's health-care system, including a shortage of family doctors.
"I think [with] what the B.C. government has done…we are attracting physicians from other provinces," she said.
Craven, an internationally trained doctor with a medical degree from St. George's University in Grenada, said the shift in billing practices has been a game-changer.
"You spend eight years in school ... you want to be able to pay your loan, but you want to be able to have a little comfort. And you can definitely do that in B.C. on this new contract," she added.  [...]

canadian thoughts on langa's hometown
Tumblr media
it's never actually specified in sk8 the infinity where in canada langa is from, but i am canadian and very autistic so i have been overthinking this since i watched the show and have come to what i think is a solid conclusion that might be proven totally wrong as soon as season 2 comes out
there's a few things we know about langa that i think are particularly relevant to narrowing down where he might be from:
he lived somewhere with easy, regular access to snowboarding
he's catholic (or at least went to catholic school, but from the bits showing him crossing himself i think it's meant to be understood that he's at least... loosely catholic himself, not just a "going to catholic school because they're better funded" situation)
he's never been to the coastline
he and his father speak english
if not for point 3, my easy bet would be that he's from british columbia – most of the biggest ski resorts in canada are in BC (including whistler-blackcomb, the largest ski resort in all of north america) and BC even has the largest (and most historically entrenched) japanese population in the country, which at a glance would make it a likely place for nanako to have immigrated to.
however, BC is a coastal province, with vancouver (by far the largest city) being right on the coast and victoria (the capital) being on an island. even if langa lived in a city further inland, the idea that his family never traveled to the coast in his entire life before coming to japan seems very unlikely to me.
however, there's a place that better fits all the criteria for langa's hometown: québec, specifically montral. montréal is only a bit over an hour's drive from mont-tremblant, the #1 ski resort in eastern north america, so oliver would have been able to take langa there all season with no trouble. the city has a very large catholic population and québec has historically been a catholic center of canada, so langa growing up catholic also fits (while the very low church attendance despite the large catholic population also tracks with him not having any seeming involvement in the catholic community in naha after moving there.) and while québec as a whole is largely francophone, montréal has the largest population of solely anglophone and bilingual people in the province, so the fact that langa and oliver are shown speaking english rather than french wouldn't be unusual if they're specifically from montréal.
poutine, langa's favorite food, is actually also from québec specifically, despite its association with canada as a whole and some people from québec even consider the broader association with canada to be cultural appropriation lol
so yeah, my verdict until proven otherwise is that langa most likely grew up in montréal!
(my one quibble is that if his father is meant to be québecois his name would probably be olivier rather than oliver, but ehhh if he's from a totally anglophone family then that doesn't really matter since it doesn't have to be a french-canadian name)
also, as a fun fact: the mont-tremblant resort is absolutely gorgeous, and would be both very visually distinctive and beautiful to stylize if they wanted to have langa and the gang go to canada in season 2... 👀

A Year in Books - January Booklist
Hello everyone! For this book list, I thought it would be nice to look back at some of the books published this past year. A final goodbye to 2022!
As always, there is a link to vote for our next read at the bottom of the post :) And now onto the books.
The Overnight Guest, by Heather Gudenkauf
Tumblr media
She thought she was alone… True crime writer Wylie Lark doesn’t mind being snowed in at the isolated farmhouse where she’s retreated to write her new book. A cozy fire, complete silence. It would be perfect, if not for the fact that decades earlier, at this very house, two people were murdered in cold blood and a girl disappeared without a trace. As the storm worsens, Wylie finds herself trapped inside the house, haunted by the secrets contained within its walls—haunted by secrets of her own. Then she discovers a small child in the snow just outside. After bringing the child inside for warmth and safety, she begins to search for answers. But soon it becomes clear that the farmhouse isn’t as isolated as she thought, and someone is willing to do anything to find them.
Fairy Tale, by Stephen King
Tumblr media
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was ten, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. Then, when Charlie is seventeen, he meets Howard Bowditch, a recluse with a big dog in a big house at the top of a big hill. In the backyard is a locked shed from which strange sounds emerge, as if some creature is trying to escape. When Mr. Bowditch dies, he leaves Charlie the house, a massive amount of gold, a cassette tape telling a story that is impossible to believe, and a responsibility far too massive for a boy to shoulder. Because within the shed is a portal to another world—one whose denizens are in peril and whose monstrous leaders may destroy their own world, and ours. In this parallel universe, where two moons race across the sky, and the grand towers of a sprawling palace pierce the clouds, there are exiled princesses and princes who suffer horrific punishments; there are dungeons; there are games in which men and women must fight each other to the death for the amusement of the “Fair One.” And there is a magic sundial that can turn back time.
Sea of Tranquility, by Emily St. John Mandel
Tumblr media
In 1912, 18-year-old Edwin St. Andrew crosses the Atlantic, exiled from English polite society. In British Columbia, he enters the forest, spellbound by the beauty of the Canadian wilderness, and for a split second all is darkness, the notes of a violin echoing unnaturally through the air. The experience shocks him to his core.
Two centuries later, Olive Llewelyn, a famous writer, is travelling all over Earth, far away from her home in the second moon colony. Within the text of Olive’s best-selling novel lies a strange passage: a man plays his violin for change in the echoing corridor of an airship terminal as the trees of a forest rise around him.
When Gaspery-Jacques Roberts, a detective in the black-skied Night City, is hired to investigate an anomaly in time, he uncovers a series of lives upended: the exiled son of an aristocrat driven to madness, a writer trapped far from home as a pandemic ravages Earth, and a childhood friend from the Night City who, like Gaspery himself, has glimpsed the chance to do something extraordinary that will disrupt the timeline of the universe.
Seven Empty Houses, by Samanta Schweblin and translated by Megan McDowell
Tumblr media
The seven houses in these seven stories are strange. A person is missing, or a truth, or memory; some rooms are enticing, some unmoored, others empty. But in Samanta Schweblin’s tense, visionary tales, something always creeps back in: a ghost, a fight, trespassers, a list of things to do before you die, or the fallibility of parents. Seven Empty Houses offers an entry point into a fiercely original mind, and a slingshot into Schweblin’s destabilizing, exhilarating literary world. In each story, the twists and turns will unnerve and surprise: Schweblin never takes the expected path and instead digs under the skin and reveals uncomfortable truths about our sense of home, of belonging, and of the fragility of our connections with others. This is a masterwork from one of our most brilliant modern writers.
Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow; by Gabrielle Zevin
Tumblr media
On a bitter-cold day, in the December of his junior year at Harvard, Sam Masur exits a subway car and sees, amid the hordes of people waiting on the platform, Sadie Green. He calls her name. For a moment, she pretends she hasn't heard him, but then, she turns, and a game begins: a legendary collaboration that will launch them to stardom. These friends, intimates since childhood, borrow money, beg favors, and, before even graduating college, they have created their first blockbuster, Ichigo. Overnight, the world is theirs. Not even twenty-five years old, Sam and Sadie are brilliant, successful, and rich, but these qualities won't protect them from their own creative ambitions or the betrayals of their hearts. Spanning thirty years, from Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Venice Beach, California, and lands in between and far beyond, Gabrielle Zevin's Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow is a dazzling and intricately imagined novel that examines the multifarious nature of identity, disability, failure, the redemptive possibilities in play, and above all, our need to connect: to be loved and to love. Yes, it is a love story, but it is not one you have read before.
Vote for our next book here.

Happy WBW!!
Can I hear about some of the magical critters in Silver Sentinels? [grabby hands] flora and fauna are my favorite parts of worldbuilding Are any of them domesticated as companions or working animals? (And, of course, do you have a favorite?)
*cracks knuckles* Did you want an info dump? You’re getting an info dump.
YAY someone finally asked me about the critters!!! I only have descriptions of them right now, I’m currently trying to find an artist so I can commission some artwork.
These creatures will serve as spiritual guides and mentors for the main characters. I won’t reveal a whole lot because spoilers, but there are lots of cool flora and fauna coming soon!!!!
The Divine Forest (placeholder name blah) is home to many mysterious beings, but there are 5 that will be somewhat relevant to the plot. I left some clues in the character intros I posted a bit ago 😈 I have some ideas for their names but for now they’ll just be referred to in simple terms until I decide.
1. Cat/reptile hybrid
From a distance, it looks like a normal hairless cat. Upon closer examination you will notice instead of skin it is covered in soft scales that change color at random (sometimes it has to do with mood, sometimes it just wants to be blue). Instead of paws it has feet like a gecko (reference pics below) with grapple-like claws and sticky toe pads to allow to climb. Its ears and tail are still cat-like. The eyes I’ve imagined to be like a leopard gecko (reference pic below as well) Basically I just love my geckos and my cats and wanted to make them part of my story? This one has to be my favorite.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Sparkly Spirit Bear
One of my first ideas for this story came from reading folklore surrounding spirit bears in British Columbia, because they’re my favorite bear and I find them super interesting. I wanted to be very careful to avoid including any of that lore in my writing because I believe Native American folklore should stay within its own culture, so I created my own bear and my own lore. She will still be cream-colored and resemble spirit bears in every way, but will be covered in amethyst and quartz kind of like a turtle shell. Her fur will also sparkle because she only eats fruits and fish from the Divine Forest (I’ll have a whole post about flora soon, I promise!) Ref pic of a spirit bear below!
Tumblr media
3. Hummingbird/beetle hybrid
Looks exactly like a hummingbird, but instead of feathers it has a metallic blue and green exoskeleton and insect-like wings. (This one is a lot easier to picture in my head than it is to describe.) I specifically pictured the Dogbane Leaf Beetle as reference:
Tumblr media
4. Shadow Owl
Inspired by a barn owl, this creature is black as night with iridescent feathers and can morph into shadow at will. As a being that is without a purely physical form, it can only communicate through thoughts.
5. Bat/squirrel hybrid shapeshifter
Its main form is a cute little squirrel with the wings and ears of a bat and the ability to echolocate, but as a shapeshifting creature it takes many forms. (This idea came mostly from trying to find an animal that I find adorable to torture Oliver with later.)

A wildfire-related travel ban to hotels or campgrounds in many communities in the southern Interior will be lifted at midnight, according to B.C.'s Minister of Emergency Management.
The order was implemented Saturday and restricted travel for the purpose of staying in temporary accommodations to Kelowna and West Kelowna, Kamloops, Oliver, Osoyoos, Penticton and Vernon.
It was designed to make space for the thousands of evacuees ordered out of their homes due to hundreds of wildfires burning around the province, as well as first responders and support staff.
However, non-essential travel to West Kelowna continues to be prohibited and people are being urged to stay away from the Lake Country and Shuswap areas.

New casting announcement for Jenna Coleman's currently filming show, "Wilderness".
Ashley Benson plays Cara Eric Balfour plays Garth Claire Rushbrook plays Caryl Marsha Stephanie Blake plays Detective Rawlins Morgana Van Peebles plays Ash. Jonathan Keltz plays Detective Wiseman Talia Balsam plays Bonnie Crystal Blint plays Liana Natalie Sharp plays Marissa Geoff Gustafson plays Zach Jake Foy plays Anton
We've got some additional details about the show recently. Jenna is currently in LA promoting The Sandman, but she will return to British Columbia to continue filming. According to the following website, filming started on the 13th of June, and is set to continue until the 16th of September.
After that, Jenna will continue filming in New York, Las Vegas, and the Grand Canyon, according to her recent interview for WWD:
Filming will also take place in the UK, but ironically, Jenna might not film there at all.
That's quite a long filming duration (probably at least 4 months, possibly even simultaneously in two different locations), so I wonder how many episodes there will be of the show.
