Prior to Usagi's backstory where he mentioned his father's death and his mother and him living on the life insurance payout, I had a different headcanon for his backstory that explained why Meryl Mei insists he's a good kid despite constantly buying drugs from the gang and being an oddball.

Usagi is the oldest of many siblings ranging from those just a few years younger than him to toddlers. The Alohaoes have lived below the poverty line for generations and the family were no strangers to losing their members to gang life, drug addiction, crippling debt, or a combination of the three. Some of those members, like Usagi's parents, try to make an honest living as working class folks, but both end up working long hours to barely get by and government assistance can only go so far.

As the oldest sibling, Usagi ended up being de-facto man of the house, making sure his siblings get to school on time, attend their games and doctor's appointments, tucking them in at the end of the day, staying up when one or five get sick. Usagi's parents do love him, but there's that underlying obligation and guilt Usagi feels if he doesn't step up to help the family in any way, and his parents can only do so much after being out of the house for so long and splitting time between their kids for quality time.

Usagi knows his parents are working multiple dead-end jobs, unable to be promoted or change to better careers due to lack of education and opportunities, and they end up coming home late at night to be taken care of by him before doing it all over again the next day. While balancing his own studies and trying to go through the day of caring for his family and house, Usagi ends up being addicted to hard drugs out of necessity rather than pleasure. Coffee and nicotine patches can only keep you up and alert for so long, and sometimes there are days where sleep is not an option; the longest he's stayed up is 31.5 hours straight followed by crashing for 5 hours and waking up to resume his schedule as if nothing happened. Sometimes, the drugs suppress his appetite, which allows him to go long without eating in case he doesn't get a chance to sit down.

The worst part and another reason for him being addicted to drugs is the fact that he's a natural genius.

Upon realizing how intelligent and inquisitive their son is, his parents are also banking on him to be the first of the Alohaoes to graduate high school and go to college without a criminal record or other issues. If Usagi gets a well-paying degree and job, the Alohaoes can breathe easier in terms of finance and Usagi can become an example for future generations to eventually get the Alohaoes out of the poverty cycle. So, not only is Usagi taking care of his siblings but he ends up overseeing the household such as taxes and bills, talking to authorities to prevent them from escalating situations near his home, filling out forms for welfare and arguing with health insurance companies at a very young age. His family unconciously expect him to be able to do anything because of his intelligence and they're hoping his grades would allow him to receive free scholarships among other things.

Like many who experienced living below the poverty line, the idea of mental health and attempts to ease this load while the system is intentionally working against you is met with "just deal with it" instead. Finding someone to vent to or provide help is difficult and could cause more harm than good if someome takes things out of context. Someone called CPS on them once because Usagi made an offhand remark on how tired he was; Usagi had to stop the case from escalating in fear that his siblings would be separated "because he made a stupid mistake" and feels guilty for what he did despite being honest at the time.

The drugs Usagi takes doesn't only keep him up but also hide who he really is. While he appears jovial, irresponsible, and amicable on drugs, he's the complete opposite when sober. I imagine him to be like Fugo: cynical, bitter, easy to anger but unable to express it. The bodysuit he wears is intentionally fitted not only to minimize issues caused by skin irritation and bug bites (seeing how he has that in his backpack) but it also doubles as a calming compression suit to ease his bottled emotions. It could be hiding other things but who knows. He's good at hiding things... too good.

Usagi doesn't want to lash out on his loved ones nor show what he's going through. He keeps himself high to maintain his fake persona and remain likeable, but it would only be so long before he breaks and shows who he really is.

Ooo Social workers rock!! They kinda failed me and my brother when we were younger (small town consequences) but there are so many good ones out there and I’m sure you’ll be absolutely amazing. That’s so cool and I hope it works out for you. Just know if you’re ever feeling undervalued in that field I value you and you work!

Guy, Aquia, and Zev are perfect examples oldest–middle–youngest sibling syndrome

Cus first of all Aquia gives such middle sibling energy

People really do not pay him no mind💀

If Aquia wasn't such a sweetheart he could really be out here in these streets and nobody would know and possibly not care and that actually kinda sad

People pleaser, especially in regards to Guy, he really just wants Guys attention and approval SIMPLY AS A BROTHER but doesn't think hes worthy of Guys attention because he admires him so much, hes really independent but hes good at making good friends/companions, he's something of a peacemaker I guess hes good at being a mediator I thinks, Aquias actually kinda shy and pretty complicit so he doesn't fit into the 'act out for attention' stereotype unless someone can prove me wrong

Aquia is quiet too, like have yall clocked how invisible Aquia would probably be without the Avari name attached to him

I think Zev is the only one that's really ever given him a chance to talk but at the same time Zev loves to talk and loves the attention

Definitely spoiled, just wants attention bruh, will annoy talk to his older brothers at any opportunity, very extroverted, open(bro has no filter), sense of humor of the family-- "You've gotten so big, how old are you? 18?" "I'm 23." feels like hes been the same age for too damn long

Also Zev is a whore(affectionate but also derogatory but in a "I care about you" criticism kind of way) the youngest child is often never truely seen as full grown or able to reach the same level as their older siblings and while I think theres other things going on in there as well as think it could be completely unrelated, I conspire that Zevs "leisure pursuits" are a way for him to 'grow up' a little faster

And then we have Guy

Specifically oldest son cus oldest daughter is a WHOLE different category.

Indifferent to most things at this point, stubborn, not very expressive, domineering, more or less tolerates his younger brothers but wont go out of his way to entertain them, but were the opportunity to arise and he thinks they deserve it hed take them out just for a brief respite cus they're still his baby brothers, entitlement, old enough to drink around parents and know the juicy family gossip with older folks, shows signs of narcissism, "When are you going to get married?"

Being a child prodigy of some sort dosen't help his case either💀

Let's be honest all three of these boys need to go to therapy💀

ANYWAYS REONSEMISHIRA PARENT HCS LET'S GO

(I'm not gonna clarify how they have the child, whether it was adoption, if you hc one of them as Trans and they were comfortable with that, or if it's Omegaverse, whatever, I'ma leave that to however yall wanna see it lol)

I'ma start off with explaining the kids and then we'll see how their three parents raised them. This also means that this list will be long as hell because all I wanna do is talk about my babies 😭

- They have a little boy first and my God do they adore him 🤧

- Yall can call him whatever you want but I'ma call him Cole because it's cute <3

- Cole definitely got that Semi personality

- Fun and exciting but he can switch to being moody in .5 seconds

- Literally attached at Kenjirō's hip. He believes that Kenjirō knows everything fr. If he asks a question and Kenjirō doesn't know the answer then he's baffled.

- Reon is who he runs to when he needs advice, especially as he gets older. He'll get impulsive and cocky advice from Eita and he'll get straightforward and blunt advice from Kenjirō so Reon's his best bet.

- Cole's adventurous for sure. He just wants to know what's out there. It's a big, big world for a person that small. This leads to a lot of running after him. You know those videos where parents are running for their baby because said baby is making a run for the street or a pool of water or something? Yeah that's them 💀

- Has a resting bitch face for sure. Literally the same pout and eyebrow dip as Eita.

- Funnily enough, Cole tends to fuss at Eita the most. Kissing Kenjirō while he's holding him? Excuse you, he's right there. Cuddling with Reon while he's in his lap? Um, hate to say it, but he was here first.

- You know that meme where one dude is kissing the kid in the towel on the head and then it cuts to a man holding the kid by it's legs? The first one is Kenjirō and Reon, the second one is Eita. Eita whips Cole around like a helicopter. He doesn't know his own strength. Cole has fun tho lmao.

- Not too much later they get another one! Another boy! I'ma call him Dusk!

- Dusk is a lot more like Reon. He's gentle and smiles at everyone.

- Dusk is the kid who says 'hi' to all the people he goes past in the grocery store.

- He's curious like Cole but instead of him being like "Oooh danger fun" like Cole he's more of a "Oooh I wanna see how that thing works, can we go check it out please?"

- Cole was a bit confused about Dusk at first. Had a little bit of only child syndrome. There he was getting all the attention and all the sudden he has to share it with this little baby that just sleeps and cries.

- He's a good big brother when he comes around. Very protective. The type of kid that hovers around their little sibling and will throw hands if anyone he doesn't like gets too close. Cuz trust me those little fists will GO. Literal walking definition of "These hands are rated E for Everyone"

- Dusk is a bit more sensitive than Cole. He's got a kinder heart for sure. But at the same time you must remember these kids also belong to Kenjirō so they can and will joke everyone they walk past on a daily.

- Now for the final child (this is such a lie I just found another name I liked I hope you guy are ready for a fourth after this one)

- THIS ONE'S A GIRL I KNOW YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE

- I'm gonna call her Oksana 🤧

- I'ma just take a moment and say that Russian names (especially feminine names) are so gorgeous??

- So of the top of your head you'd be like "Oh this is probably the little princess of the family" which I guess you could say.

- She more of a Bloody Mary.

- She's most definitely the meanest and will rock your shit.

- She means well. Sort of.

- If she likes you then she loves you. If she doesn't like you then she wants you dead. There's no in between with her 😭

- She sure is gorgeous tho

- Her brothers like to believe that they protect her. It's really the other way around. They got the spirit tho!

She's an excellent dancer. She excels in ballet; she's very flexible too, so that helps. Eita loves it. It's special because he remembers all the times she would dance on his feet as he directed them both to the correct steps.

- He most definitely believes she's an angel.

- "Isn't she a sweetheart?" "She just pushed that other kid on the ground." "Well maybe the little fuck shoulda backed their ass up."

- Anyways

- I'm naming him Sephtis <33

- The other mean one except he's only mean in his head

-Everyone thinks he's the oldest and are genuinely shocked when they find out he's the youngest of the group

- Him and Oksana are twins

- The prettiest twins you'll ever see 🤧

- Reon is legit his HERO. He is so inspired by Reon really. He wants to radiate the same calm, peaceful, and comforting energy that Reon does. He's working on it the best he can. He just wants to be a comfort source for those who need one.

- He's got a heart of gold really, he's just not very good at showing it. He makes an effort tho!

- Ok now for the actual things about Reon, Eita, and Kenjirō 😭

- May I just start with the fact that Reon has this parenting thing downpacts? Like he is a natural

- Eita and Kenjirō not as much but ya know, they get better as time goes on.

- Kenjirō learned quite a lot in Med school about pediatrics so he's got them in that field.

- Reon's better with feelings, Kenjirō's better with health

- Eita's more like "Omg there's my baby :D oh shit it's crying what do I do-"

- EITA CAN BE THE FUN PARENT

- Now with Eita as one of their parents these kids love music. Cole likes drums, Dusk likes the guitar, Oksana likes to dance the most but she can play the clarinet and flute, and Sephtis can play the bass. His favorite is the oregon.

- The oregon was a bit out of no where but let him and his goth piano live. Eita couldn't teach him something he didn't know how to play so Eita was like "Welp we'll learn together" and then they did lol

- One if my previous hcs was that Reon and Eita wake up with Kenjirō before his shifts and yes, these kids wake up to their loud ass man feet

- They just go back to bed on school nights but if not or their too young to go to school, they will wake up and join the follow-Kenjirō-around train

- Eita is definitely the most easygoing. He treats them like royalty (which they are in his eyes). He slips them candy, and if they're old enough to deal with the consequences of their actions, he really doesn't care if they randomly run into each other in the middle of the night when they both want a random snack. He's just chill about it.

- Eita is the parent that values their interests. If they like to draw, he buys them supplies. If they like to play sports, he'll buy them equipment or help them practice. They wanna go skydiving? Count him in. He just wants to support them because his mother never really supported him, meanwhile his dad wasn't even there.

- Kenjirō is the homework help. He's the smartest for sure, therefore they go to him.

- As tough as he seems, Kenjirō DOES dote on them from time to time. This is definitely a quality he got from his own mother. He's strong and stoic but he shows you his love when he's feeling rather happy.

- It's little things. Kissing their temples and foreheads, fixing their hair, the occasional "I'm proud of you", and just little nicknames like "love" and "darling" thrown in from time to time. It's fr so special to the kids.

- Reon is the problem solver of the family for sure. Teaches his children to handle things with peace and grace. (Even though that may come difficult to some of them)

- "Well what they said really hurt my feelings." "Well why don't you tell them how that made you feel and based on how they react to that, you do what feels right to you. How about that?" "I feel like they're purposely trying to make me feel like a bad person." "Well to give it to you straight, you probably shouldn't hang out with them anymore. Separate yourself from them."

- Despite being a funky little group, they are quite good parents. They work well together and show love to their kids the best they can.

- Reon's just so peaceful and comforting and rather wise. His kids genuinely admire it.

- Cole, Dusk, Oksana, and Sephtis are all very well behaved thanks to our local good boys Kenjirō and Reon. But they definitely know how to let loose a bit since they do also have Eita as a parent.

- Reon and Eita both definitely cry on first days of school, and graduations. Kenjirō huffs and acts like his eyes aren't a bit glossy.

- Eita does NOT want his babies to grow up. Reon encourages them to grow but he's still pretty sad about it, the type of guy to cry when his kid's voices drop. Kenjirō has mixed emotions. He wants them to grow and learn about life but at the same time he just wants to scoop them all up and hide them from the cruel world.

- THEY JUST LOVE THEIR BABIES

Ok I literally just made a different post about this, BUT: time to get emo about it, baby!!! Ashe and Felix's relationship is actually extremely complex and carries a surprisingly hefty amount of character development for both of them, for a pair with only two supports.

The central thesis here: Ashe + Felix is Felix + Glenn 2.0

This ramble breaks down the ways that dynamic matches and what it means for Ashe. (I've already gone into Fe's a while back, so he's not really the focus here.)

This got long and I have feelings. A gift from me to you: courtesy cut.

Hello and Welcome to Blue Lions With Dead or Missing Siblings Anonymous. My name is Sylvain/Dedue/Felix/Ashe/Mercedes and I haven't seen my sibling in 5/<9/9/9/~15 years. These kids need help.

First things first, I don't think this is Replacement Brother Syndrome. Rather, I think their dynamic mirrors Felix and Glenn's but as a distinct relationship for both Felix and Ashe, because neither of them is going into this in the exact same role as they had with their own now-dead brothers. We know that, as a kid, Felix was idealistic and clingy and looked up to Glenn and his role as a knight with his whole heart, but Glenn was also somewhat abrasive and cynical, and now Felix is, too. Meanwhile, Christoph was focused on teaching Ashe trust and chivalry up to the very end, and Ashe still lives by that. Felix doesn't match that role at all, and Ashe doesn't expect him too. A new and different brother doesn't count as a replacement brother.

According to Dimitri, Glenn was sarcastic and rude and liked to pick fights, but despite that, Felix admired him and wanted to be strong like him and says he was a great knight. (Note that he gets mad at his father treating Glenn's death like it was heroic, but he at no point does he argue that Glenn wasn't a strong and good knight, only that Glenn was reasonable in his commitment to his ideals. This is a surprise tool that will help us later.)

Felix is ALSO abrasive and likes to pick fights, but Ashe admires him and his strength and says he's like a great knight.

Glenn teaches Felix to think for himself and not blindly take orders. Felix tells Ashe very bluntly to think for himself and not get himself killed in his blind enthusiasm.

Later, Felix amends that statement to say he doesn't want Ashe to abandon his ideals, just to be reasonable. That matters, because Felix said he learned from his brother, but his brother was the one who read him the tales of chivalry and bravery and knighthood and all of that in the first place. Glenn taught him balance, not cynicism, it just took him some time to grow into it. Once he did, he tried again to pass it on to Ashe, but properly this time.

"It's OK to be who you are" FELIX PLEASE I'M GOING TO CRY

Meanwhile, Ashe's older brother, Christoph, didn't. He was about trust and chivalry through and through, and it's what got him killed. Look at these exchanges with Catherine.

(Side note, I'd argue that Catherine's support chain is the one that carries Ashe's character development on its back, but Fe comes in second place, followed by my archnemesis Gilbert. Meanwhile, Ashe carries Fe's, together with Ingrid and Seteth. I know that every single one of you is going to disagree w me on this, and I'm OK w that and would not be upset if yall came into my ask box to demand an explanation, since I love to talk lmao)

Cynicism couldn't save Glenn, trust couldn't save Christoph. So Ashe had to learn cynicism from Felix, and Felix had to make sure Ashe knew to keep it in balance with his own beliefs and ideals. Thats... a lot.

What really makes it stick for me, though, is this exchange after Felix tells Ashe that Glenn used to read him tales of knights and chivary:

Like, tell me that's not a conversation baby Felix had with Glenn at some point. I'm so upset right now lol

Idk, there's no point to this, I was just reading supports, as I tend to do in my spare time, apparently, and it came to me in a divinr revelation. Also, it's weird that they max out at b-support, since they have paired activity dialogues and the only other person Fe has paired dialogues with is Dimitri. (Who, by the way, I have a whole other spiel abt, in addition to the spiel I posted a while back, bc I think their relationship is a whole ass case study on family dynamics and I didn't quite get into that in the first one.)

A lot of Fe and Ashe’s B-support could honestly be an A-support, so if I were adding a third support, I think it would have to go between the current C and B? I have no idea, I just want to see more of it lol. Maybe let them have an unrelated conversation and then come back to the book in the A support, now with more of a friendship in place so it doesn't go from "your book is stupid" straight to "hey, let me give you some life advice that shows my character growth more clearly than literally any other scene in this entire fucking game" with nothing in the middle.

The Great Peter Infodump of March 2020

yo @brackets-and-woolly-hats @mijaco-geo and @mike-nesmith-for-mayor I have recently been informed that yall would really like me to infodump about Peter and I want to thank yall because I think if I held it in any longer I would explode

Also thanks to the coolcherrycream articles and various interviews that I learnt all these from in the 5-ish months I’ve been thinking about the monkees for

But before I start going hnngggg Peter I would like to warn you that despite my tone this is going to contain some heavy stuff. We’re talking brief mentions of blood, and suicide and death so be careful about that

This is gonna get hella long so *cracks knuckles* let’s begin

Childhood

let’s start from the very beginning: a very good place to start

Friday, 13th February one bb was born and he would always say that Friday the 13th was a lucky day for years onwards

He was born with a lot of diversity in his parentage

He’s Irish and German-Jewish on his mother’s side and Norwegian on his dad’s side

Speaking of Jewishness (is that a word???) I rememeber an article saying that he used to randomly say Hebrew words in interviews and I think he taught Mike how to say something too?? I dont know

Peter was a very friendly boy even when he was just a toddler cus he would drag any new friend he had home

Anyway, he was born in Washington DC

Once on Christmas he went missing and his mum and grams panicked and looked all over the house for him

Turns out he was just waiting at lampost in the snow because he wanted to make sure that Santa would bring him a present

Speaking of Grams, when he was 3 (i think im doing this from memory) he was at a post office with his mother when she came in.

He got uber excited and shouted “THAT’S MY GRAMS. HER NAME IS CAIT!”

And so everyone turned to look at her and he squealed

He would also often ride on the top part double deck buses and whenever the bus slowed down, he would wave to nearby people and say “HI MY NAME’S PETER WHAT’S YOUR?” to which those people who wave back and sometimes answer him. I mean, wouldn’t you?

Also he started to play with pianos when he was 3 and also he liked dancing so that’s cute

One of his first memories was of being at the hospital where his brother Nick (who they called Nicky and that’s what I’m going to call him) was born

Soon after Nicky was born they moved to Germany Yeet. He was 4 and the time and Nicky was like 18 months or smth

Germany

Right so I dont know why people dont talk about this part of his childhood because like,,,it’s interesting??

In Germany they had two maids

They had to put sugar in every food so that Peter and Nicky would actually eat the strange German food

He became very fluent in German and would help his mother with translations

He was also fluent in French for some reason

Someone made a statue of his 4 year old head and it became a famous minor art piece that featured in calendars

It probably now sits in his house because I saw in in the background of the short documentary that his son, Ivan Ivanoli made about him which you sould check btw

Anyway, when Peter was 5 he made his first official best friend Ule who was two years older than him

Once when he was playing hide and seek with Nicky he ran at full force at a closed glass door that he thought was open, shattering it, and getting a shard into his arm. Reasonably he screamed

Apparently, he was hurt a major artery and would have bled to death if not for someone being in the house to call a doctor

Once he was out and about wandering around, as you would do if you were Peter when he was stopped by some official looking guy from going back into his own house.

It’s important to note that Peter looked very much like a German boy and would ONLY talk in German outside. God knows why he did this. Reasonably, the dude thought he was lying and he had to call for his mum

Anyway, in Germany school starts when you’re five but his birthday was in the middle of the school year so his parents sent him in early which set him up for some outcasted child syndrome later

And then the moved back to America yeet

AMERICA (LAND OF CAPITALISM)

So he moved back into America but it didn’t stop there. No. They had to move around like a 100 different times and as someone who went to a total of 4 different schools (so far oh no) that sets you up with outcasted child syndrome. What also sets you up with outcasted child syndrome is if you’re an undiagnosed neurodivergent which Peter seemed to think he was when he was in his 50s (either ADHD or autism) so uhh keep that in mind

So he was in school and as mentioned earlier he was a year younger than his peers so that’s fun

He was very very clever. Often he would finish his work first and his (4th grade) teacher would make do some reading or creative writing. She encouraged him to do creative writing because she saw some talent in there

Not only was he acadmically gifted, but he was also musically gifted. Playing not only the piano (which he got lessons for) but also the guitar, the banjo, the bass, and the french horn which he got an award for when he was in highschool playing in a band made out of college students for some reason

Speaking of awards, he was once given an award for maths

This giftedness would later set him up for Gifted Child Burnout he had in college

Also he changed schools like a total of 13 times so that’s fun

He went to a private school but apparentl, according to his parents, he hated it (but he remembered liking it???)

Also, he made a lot of jokes in class

Remember Nicky? Yeah, Nicky would often write songs for him to sing and stuff (Nicky would later write songs for Peter’s solo album and a bunch of other stuff what a great brother we stan)

The family had some kind of barn once where he would do puppet shows his siblings

Anyway, school life was all fine and dandy until 5th grade hit and he changed schools and everyone lost interest in him because he was one year younger

Also his dad was apparently very disconnected with him. Needless to say, Peter felt like his father didn’t like him

Once when he was 9, he told his father that he noticed that when the clouds were around at night, it would be warmer during the day to which his father shouted at him saying that “he has no proof of that” and that he shouldn’t say anything without proof

This of course led him to feel like no one wanted to listen to what he wanted to say

poor baby

I think his father would have been the reason why Peter would later say in an interview that he hated “loud abusiveness” the most

He would also later say that a combination of his dad and feeling like he was weird and different would lead him to his drinking problem

So umm we dont stan his dad ok

Once when he was 13 he picked up a loaded shotgun and put it against his head. But he decided that he didn’t want to do it at the last second.

Overall, life from 5th grade till highschool was terrible for him

He didn’t have any friends in his school

So when he moved to a new school in Conneticut where he was surrounded with people of the same age, he was really happy all the way until college where he flunked out twice

Hippie Time (Honestly this part is just me talking about him and Stephen Stills because Steter Stirk changed me)

And so Peter became a hippie in Greenwich Village

In the Village, he became a sort of entertainer. Not just singing and playing, he was also a comedian.

And then he kept hearing about this dude who looked like him from other people.

This dude turned out to be Stephen who was also hearing the same kind of talk for about the same amount of time

Pete and Stephen VIBED im not kidding they started to play with each other and also Stephen’s room mate who was also there

Also it turns out that they liked to talk about the same things so that’s neat

Peter went to Venuzuela apparently and when he came back the Monkee thing happened yeet

Once when Stephen was waiting to move into his new house Peter was all like “hey dude live with me”

For a while they also lived in the same house when he was Monkee and if that doesn’t fuel any ship fics I dont know what will

Im serious the ship is here and its real I saw fics and fanart

They played with the colour tv and would “pick apart each other’s brains” umm

Also Peter’s favourite band was buffalo springfield and we stan a friend who would say your band was their favourite band

And I think this is where my knowledge starts to fade because I haven’t really heard any cool facts from here on afterwards

Last Final Cool Facts

He was a teacher for quite a while and taught about Maths, basketball (despite not liking any sport except swimming) and Easter Philosophy,,,yes easter philosphy the man was into that kinda stuff

Also he was a big reader. Always having a smoll book in his pocket that he would read while on set with the Monkees. But he was particularly a non fic kinda guy

He would write poetry on the back of scripts

In the 2000s he said that his sister thought he might have ADD

Also autism but when asked about it he’d be all P E R H A P S

which is very unhelpful Peter pls give us a straight answer

I mean he cant give us straight answers because he was the gayest monkee (he fricked a dude once but he didn’t like it)
