Thank you for being a manga fan of Elfen Lied, that isn't just some blind ass kisser of Lynn Okamoto, and feels that the story could have been done much more justice if it was created by a much better creator.
Proud to represent this apparent minority, lol. I always feel so conflicted about Elfen Lied because I want to defend it (as it's a series that left a huge impact on me and still informs a lot of my OC worldbuilding) but at the same time I have to acknowledge that Lynn Okamoto wasn't competent enough to be the one who told the story. So many of Elfen Lied's flaws can be tied back to Okamoto being a shitty writer.
There's actually a video about Elfen Lied by an amazing creator named Hazel. Something that's always stuck with me about that video is learning how Lynn Okamoto was trying to create his own Love Hina (which explains the pseudo-harem going on in Elfen Lied). And apparently, both in Japan and abroad, fans were overwhelmingly more interested in the conspiracy and intrigue of the Diclonii than in the relationship drama between Kouta and Yuka. But oops, Lynn Okamoto cares way more about the harem shit than in any of the cool ideas he probably accidentally came up with.

So about how you felt on Elfen Lied, finding interest in the Diclonius plot yet being disappointed by everything else, the wiki explains more on this specifically on pages like the creator’s interview and the FAQ, but the reason so many feel that disappointed feeling with that is because the creator, Lynn Okamoto, wanted to do a love story that would be a spiritual successor to Love Hina but with a twist to “sound interesting” but he couldn’t come up with a plot for it. Eventually he came up with all these sci-fi concepts mixed in with some mythological ones and that would serve as the B-Plot for his love story. He had a totally different idea set in his mind but his editors and fan/viewer reaction changed things drastically, as people found the love story stuff boring and the Diclonius plot cooler, so because of a whole mess and Lynn, being this beginner mangaka and all, just wanting to find a way to keep his viewers interested ended up changing a lot of stuff he had planned along the way in a very messy way. Again, much better explained on the wiki I recommend checking it out.
thank you for this info, i actually didn’t know any of that!! i only watched the anime so i kind of guessed i might’ve been missing something, even if it was just extra manga arcs.
it makes a lot of sense that it’s meant to be a love story after finishing watching it, since kouta and lucy’s relationship as children ends up being core to how they interact when kouta finds nyu.
despite that, i still do lament the wasted potential of the diclonius world-building, but do have a better understanding of what the show is supposed to be about. i just get drawn in by murderous mutant women lol.

Elfen Lied wasn't made with the intent of being a story with a message though. That's a very huge misconception. This is much more thoroughly explained on the wiki, such as Lynn Okamoto's interview and the FAQ page on there, but the creator of Elfen Lied was planning on making a Love Hina clone first with emotional sci-fi drama stuff on the side to make his story seem "more interesting." He wanted to write a love story, with a supernatural side plot to keep viewers interested, but his editors and viewers wanted to focus more on the Diclonius ripping people to shreds over the plot of some cousins kissing each other. So he was made to shift the focus of the story to give the people what they wanted. I do think there is a lot to criticize with Elfen Lied but the huge misconceptions over what the author "intended" block out what should be actually criticized. Yeah, a lot of the stuff is bad, but it isn't correct to criticize something for "failing to give out it's message" when in truth there was no intended message to begin with and the author was made to do something entirely different than what he originally wanted. Hope I don't sound like I am hating or anything, just wanted to point things out and explain things.
Good to know, thank you for the info and don't worry it doesn't sound hateful I appreciate it.
Tbh I haven't read the manga or the wiki since the first time I read them as a 13 year old so it's fair to say that I didn't understand everything too well and it's also true that most of elfen lied's fans come from the horror/gore aspects of the manga. For the most part it's not as deep as it seems and that's very apparent reading it now at 26, so I agree with you and your clarification helps put that in more accurate words so thanks again.
One thing I would like to point out though is that just because the creator of something didn't intend some meanings the audience has derived from the work, doesn't negate and erase that. In other words, the not intended meanings we find in someone's work aren't inherently incorrect just because the author didn't intend them.
On that note, I was planning to write a more in depth review once I'm done reading it so I will do further research into that. I will probably mention your message as it has good points so if you want send me a message with your @ so I can give you proper credits when I do
(edit to add: if his intent was writing a love story, he absolutely sucks at writing a love story)
