Stede looked over at the group of men that were now talking amongst each other, every now and then looking over in their direction. They had challenged the Captain to a drinking contest which Stede accepted without thinking it over long... or at all. If he could prove himself in someway, Stede would always jump at the chance, even if he didn't need to. But because of how often he was underestimated and how many times he'd been laughed at, he wanted to prove himself. Even if he lost the challenge, at least he tried, right? It was better than backing down, it was better than showing fear. Though, one of the men in that group did flirt with him. Something Stede hadn't even noticed until Izzy pointed it out. Of course, he had no interest in him. Or in anyone else for that matter. There was only and always Israel Hands.

Though, they seemed to make him... uneasy. Not to be trusted which, admittedly, Stede didn't trust them either, but that's why he was going to do the drinking contest here and nowhere else. In front of others, including his lover.

"Then stay here with me? They'd be stupid to even try anything with you here." Stede was always safe with Israel and it's where he felt safest. "I'll be fine, I promise. I'm not the lightweight I used to be, you know." He beams proudly, though, compared to Izzy? He was still a lightweight. He presses a quick kiss to Izzy's lips before he turns and makes his way towards the men. "Alright, men! Fill your glasses so we may begin this contest! I do hope you've prepared yourselves for The Gentleman Pirate!" @izzyeffinhands

it’s the fact that ed doesn’t know. he doesn’t know that badminton kidnapped stede with the intent to kill him. he doesn’t know that stede was so filled with self-hatred that he ran back home because he believed what badminton said: that he defiled beautiful things. and ed is the most beautiful thing he knows of. ed doesn’t know that stede is completely in love with him and knows it now. ed doesn’t know stede concocted the most elaborate and ridiculous fuckery (with the help of his awesome wife) to fake his death just so he could sail off and find ed and be with him forever. because faking your death means you have no intention of ever coming back; stede faking his death was a commitment to ed. and ed doesn’t know that stede is waxing poetic about him and staring at the moon thinking about him and being oh so in love with him.

instead, ed thinks stede lied to him about ed making him happy. he thinks stede lied to him about how much he cared for him. he thinks stede just up and left, because he’s ed and no one good stays for him.
