Seventeen's reaction to their s/o being in the same variety show as them

Synopsis: When your relationship isn’t public, how would seventeen react when you, their idol s/o, appears in the same variety show as them? Idol! Svt x idol gn! reader | idol au, fluff | 1.1k words | warnings: unsolicited comments | requested by anon A/n: honestly the svt members are already chaotic social butterflies so their behaviour wouldn’t really change? ☘︎ Why are you going to the same variety show as him? Do you want him to combust on the spot? He knows you can’t control which shows your group goes to for promotions, but this is such bad news for them. Sure he loves watching you in your element, talking about your group, the new songs you’ve released, dancing with that passion that he fell in love with. The thing is he loves watching you a bit too much.

☘︎ During the show, his brain just stops working. Who cares about professionalism? He wants to admire the masterpiece that is you. He’s going to shoot out so many heart eyes at you. He watches with a look that says he is completely enamoured or smitten with you. He is in awe. He definitely would not be able to keep the goofy smile off his face. His mind goes blank. Of course, he would cheer for you as well. Loudly. Very very loudly. He’s just so proud of you. If he was feeling a bit daring, he might even post a selfie that you both took backstage.

☘︎ The hosts might make a comment or two about how he’s falling in love with you. As long as it’s harmless jabs, you’re both usually okay with it though other members might try to steer the conversation away just to be safe. Still, he’s so obvious that his behaviour towards you is hard to ignore. The comments from the viewers would be full of things like “i want someone to look at me the same way he looks at y/n” or “he’s so in love with y/n i cannot” or “what’s going on in his brain?”

☘︎ Surprisingly, I don’t actually think that there would be much speculation about whether you both are dating. These members can somehow brush off their lovestruck behaviour with a smile. It’s just that these 4 members do always stop functioning at some point anyway? Their chaotic, mindless behaviour and cheering really isn’t that out of the ordinary when you think about it. They might become the butt of some jokes for a while but I feel like this whole thing would pass quickly enough. I guess it pays to be some of the most chaotic members?

Is there something going on?

Woozi, Junhui, Wonwoo, Dino

☘︎ Oh these members are in trouble. Unlike those in the previous group, these 4 have rather predictable behaviour when they are on variety shows. Woozi would participate in all the games and discussions but he isn’t the most outgoing. Dino is just Dinoing? Like he’s the baby of the group but he acts very maturely when he’s on variety shows. Junhui and Wonwoo tend to be on the quieter side.

☘︎ So, when you show up on the same variety show, their behaviour is just too different. Woozi, Junhui and Wonwoo would participate and be much more enthusiastic. Even if they aren’t cheering loudly, they would stare at you with pride and adoration in the same way that they would stare at the rest of the svt members. They also would not hesitate to talk to you or interact with you during the discussion portions of the show.

☘︎ With Dino, I do see him turning to become more whiny or acting a little less maturely to some extent? He might even instinctively turn towards you when his members tease him, as if he’s seeking reassurance or refuge. Or even if he tries to act the same, he will frequently sneak not so subtle glances at you like a school boy in love.

☘︎ It’s the freedom and comfort that is seen in your interactions and their behaviour towards you that would definitely make people question if there is something going on? The behaviour would go viral with viewers being split between “he’s just having a weird off day which happens” or “oh they are definitely dating, if not he likes y/n”. Both your weverse lives and social media posts would have so many comments asking about your relationship. The speculation would go around for a while and these members won’t be able to shake the rumours off for a while.

Business as usual

Jeonghan, Joshua, Minghao, Seungkwan, Vernon

☘︎ Of course he’s excited that you will be going on the same variety show as him! He loves watching you but unlike the members in the previous two points, he knows how to hide his reactions better. He’s a professional about it. His opinion is that the best course of action is to act like himself. That way nothing seems out of the ordinary.

☘︎ Jeonghan will be cheeky as always (no one is spared from his cheating and tricks, not even you). Joshua smiles adoringly at everyone and is a gentleman so he gets a free pass either way. Minghao might be a little more quiet than normal but I see people brushing it off because Minghao isn’t the most outgoing member on variety shows. Seungkwan is a professional host anyway so his interactions with you would appear normal (although his tone and gaze might be a bit softer). Vernon… is just Vernon. He stares blankly, interacts with others normally, and takes frequent sips of water. Whether or not his gaze is fixed on you or not, no one can tell.

☘︎ On the inside though, he’s squealing at how good you look, how cool you look, how adorable you are. He makes a mental note to give you extra hugs and affection later because watching you makes him fall in love with you all over again. He loves you so much, but at this point when you both aren’t comfortable publicising your relationship, he will do everything in his power to remain professional. He knows you are doing the same. You both want to keep your relationship out of the public eye and the unsolicited comments that come along with it. So for now, he’s content with showering you in love in private.

☘︎ And just say that he slips up slightly, or if the hosts/ viewers makes any unsolicited comments about the two of you possibly being in a relationship, he will brush them off by saying he’s just being supportive of his fellow idols. He will be very firm about it, and he would make sure that they know not to try and pry into your private lives further.

Quality Time

Seungcheol loves when you get chaotic. He’s used to dealing with twelve idiots (loving) every day, and adding another one to the list is no biggie! He loves to spend time with you, especially when you go out with your friends.

If you go to a club or even just to hang out at the park with your closest friends, Cheol will be perfectly content sitting quietly next to you, his arm over your shoulder, or his head resting on yours

He likes to see you happy, and if that means tagging along to all the events you go to, then so be it!

He would definitely want you to hang out with his best friends too, and you have quickly learned in your relationship, that even though Cheol is usually calm and collected, he becomes the most…energetic person when he is with his friends

If he is gaming with Wonwoo, or some other friends, he would love for you to just sit with him! Reading a book, drawing, or just dining something relaxing next to him as he tries to absolutely destroy his friends in the online world

Though, dates are definitely Seungcheol’s best version of Quality Time - mans knows how to treat you !!!

Cute dates like picnics or stargazing, where the two of you are in public, but are still away from public eye, are his forte

Those exact words, they made him furious and he quickly got a broom and vigorously whacked the bug away! In times of need you just made him question his identity as a tiger.

Honestly, would be kinda chill. He carefully took a piece of paper and a glass and scooped up the bug and placed it outside.

He asked if you wanted to play with him to help you calm down, you said yes NEVER wanting to set a foot outside right now. (Ok now imagine resting your head on his broad ass shoulders while playing and he'd run his fingers through your hair)

when your baby starts learning how to grab stuff, they’ll constantly be trying to take his glasses off as he’s cradling them

insists on singing your baby to sleep every night. sometimes you just like to observe from the doorway of the nursery so they can bond

the golden retriever energy is through the roof :( he’s just so, so, so happy to be a dad

he has tons of nicknames for your baby: honey, sweetie, sprout, pumpkin… the list goes on

honestly, there isn’t a thing this man wouldn’t do for you and your baby—he built the crib, he painted the nursery, he packed your hospital bag, he learnt how to change their diapers…

as your baby gets older, your place will be completely baby-proofed

if your little angel will be anything like him (ie: inherit some of his clumsiness), he needs to make sure they don’t bump into sharp edges as they’re exploring 😞

another member who’s extra, extra careful whenever he’s holding his baby, because the last thing he’d want to do is hurt them :(

probably gets teary or cries every time your baby wraps a hand around his finger because they’re just!! so tiny!!!

another member who likes being extremely prepared throughout the course of your pregnancy

he tries his best to stay calm through everything because he doesn’t want to add to your worries :(

even during the worst tantrums he never loses his patience with your baby, simply continuing to rock them in his arms with a gentle smile on his face

when they finally stop, he gives them a little kiss on the forehead to comfort them <3

your baby is better dressed than some people are 😌

he likes to buy cute outfits for them, it doesn’t matter if people point out that babies grow out of their clothes really quickly

bonus if he coordinates his (and your) outfits to theirs so you always look like the best-dressed family whenever you’re out in public together

he’d also like doing something artistic with your baby once they’re older, like letting them try finger painting or moulding stuff using clay

proudly displays their creations all around the house afterwards <3

he documents every step of the way so you’ll have lots of photos and videos of your baby to look back on <3

on that note, he absolutely has a photo of you holding your baby as his lock screen

definitely really, really emotional about being new parents with you and swears up and down that he’s going to be the best dad

gives the best reactions to anything your baby does, the “you’re doing amazing, sweetie!” energy personified

sometimes he can be a tad overprotective over his baby, but all for good reason because he never wants anything bad to happen to them :(

he talks to them a lot even if they’re just a baby and can’t understand anything, it still doesn’t stop him from telling them about his day in a soft voice while rocking them to sleep, it’s his way of bonding with them ;-;

in the beginning he might flail around and panic a bit with tasks like changing your baby’s diapers or trying to feed them, but he quickly gets the hang of it <3

eventually he’s completely unfazed and probably bopping his head along to some music while changing their diapers 😭

he’s just so, so endeared by your baby that everything they do makes him grin widely

lets your baby make small decisions for him for fun

“should i order noodles or a burger?” [baby noises] “noodles it is, you’re so right, sweetheart.”

once your baby is older, he’d love taking them on late-night bus rides, your baby tucked securely in his arms as they peer out the window

he points places out to them too <3 “that’s where uncle seungkwan and i go out to eat a lot” “that’s where i got you your cat plushie”

speaking of cats, definitely shows your baby a ton of cat videos :(

he’s a very animated storyteller, so whenever he tells your baby a story it always makes them giggle because of how energetic he is

obviously your baby would show a passion for dancing since a very young age

he’s over the moon when he sees them bounce along to the song playing on tv, immediately showering them in hugs and kisses while proudly remarking to you they’re going to grow up to be an even better dancer than him 🥺

if you bring them along with you to visit him at practice? he’d be even more determined to give it his all because he wants to look cool in front of your baby ;-;

much like how he’s always the others’ biggest supporter, no one’s a bigger fan of your baby than him and he’s always showering them in praises :(

when u start reading this u will understand the despair i felt when tumblr deleted my reply (just as i was finishing the margiela part) But we live… so okay i must warn you this is long and i made collages bc there was way too many pictures i wanted to show… One thing about me i don’t like to half ass things so i really hope you enjoy reading all this 🫶🏻 (this is one of my favorite questions i got asked EVER)

I wanted to start off with Jolo (Jeonghan solo) first just because i have that on my pinterest saved and Ready. You know i envision kind of fallen angel (1004) for one concept and venusian otherworldly beautiful man that it makes you uneasy for the other concept? Okay so first one some of the inspiration (versace ss02, mugler 84, givenchy (by mcqueen) haute couture 1997, mcqueen fw 06, blumarine ss24)

Second one i just think simone rocha all over… it would fit his whimsical looking ass…And this JPG look with the pearls AND the givenchy all white beauty just yes… Oh i adore.

can't believe that the first thing i write and post here is for TBZ, who are, arguably, my newest group. I was so sure it was going to be SVT but, oh well.

I was looking for Sangyeon fan fictions last night to fall asleep and I barely found any I liked and then I was scrolling tiktok this morning and found this video. The rest is history. (i also didn't mean for it to be over 1000 words? the things this man does to me)

➳ fluff, with like, a tiny tiny bit of spicy at the end, nothing too bad. some very short making out and scratchy scratchy on sangyeon's broad back that makes me go feral. this was entirely self-indulgent in case that wasn't already clear

“Aw, shit!” You curse as your screen turns black in front of your eyes. Right in the middle of a particularly good tiktok, too. You manage to engage yourself in the fascinating colour (white) of the ceiling for all of ten seconds before you decide to do something about your predicament.

“Babeeee,” you whine, dropping your arms down by your sides. You hear a low chuckle next to your ear. Your boyfriend is lying next to you on his bed, one arm under your head as he also scrolls mindlessly through social media.

“What do you want?” He asks in a low rasp, eyes still trained on his phone. “My phone is empty!” You say into the silence, watching it stretch for a few seconds before Sangyeon rasps another low reply: “So charge it.”

“How can you be so heartless!” You pant in mock offence, “Then I’d have to get up.” The silence lasts until you feel the need to clarify again, “Do it for me, pleaseee.”

The only reply you earn is another chuckle. “But then I would have to get up, babe.”

“Yeah but you love me so much, you’d gladly do it!”

This finally makes him lock his phone and look over at you. His unstyled hair is falling into his eyes in the most endearing way and the way he’s smiling at you so softly has your stomach doing somersaults.

“Where’s your charger?”

“In my bag,” you grumble.

“The bag you dropped by the entrance way when you came over?” He inquires, eyes narrowing. You nod in shame and bat your eyelashes in a not-entirely-serious attempt at a plea.

“Nah, I’m too lazy.” Under your shocked expression and an offended gasp, Sangyeon turns back to his phone and resumes his video.

You spend all of three second staring at him incredulously before you snatch it out of his hand unto the floor, giving it a soft nudge just strong enough to slide it out of reach.

“Hey!” Your boyfriend yells the second your hands wrap around his screen, but you’re too fast for him to snatch the offending device back from you before it’s halfway across the room.

He looks at you, more in offence than in disbelief. “Brat,” he mumbles and you decide to ignore the memories that word summons inside your head.

“If you’re getting up anyway, you might as well bring me my charger.” You say, the satisfied little smile on your face making your boyfriend roll his eyes.

“Actually,” he says, surprising you once again, “I’m good.” He flops back down next to you, joining you in your thrilling observation of the ceiling (still white). Again it turns out to be you, who caves first.

“Baby?”

“Hmm?” Sangyeon replies in that same low rasp that he’s been speaking in for the past twenty minutes. You are starting to be seriously affected by it.

“Tell me something.” You still say, despite better judgement.

“What do you want me to tell you?”

“I don’t know, anything.”

“I already told you everything earlier during lunch.”

“I’m sure there’s more stories to share.”

He hums a soft ‘no’, making sure you’re slowly starting to feel like you’re talking to the famed ceiling (white, but you spotted a slightly off-colour splotch within the last ten minutes).

“Please! I’m so bored!” You whine again. Sangyeon, still staring at the ceiling is quiet for a beat before asking, “Do you want to watch a movie?”

You ponder it over, “No… We could take a walk in the park?”

“Not in the mood for putting on my disguise today. How about reading?”

“Hmm, no. Not feeling like it. Video games?”

“Not in the mood.”

“Also, all of that would include getting up.” You finally observe, groaning in defeat. You’re about ready to resign yourself to the ceiling when Sangyeon speaks up again.

“You wouldn’t have to be bored, if you hadn’t gotten rid of our only source of entertainment.” He grumbles. You smirk, seeing this as what it is: an opening to get what you want.

“Oh I’m sure we can find some other way of entertaining ourselves.” He looks at you from the corner of his eye inquisitively. You look back, wiggling your eyebrows in a way that makes him laugh.

“I mean, if we’re both bored…”

“… we could kiss?” He finishes your thought, already propping himself up on the arm that rests under you and leaning over.

He cages you in with the other hand, smirking down at you. “I don’t know if you deserve it, though…” he trails off. You roll your eyes. After thirty minutes of speaking to you in his best bedroom voice is not the time for him to start teasing.

“We don’t have to if you don’t want. I was already super engrossed in that one random grey spot on your ceiling, anyway.” You bluff, as if you aren’t dying to grab his shirt and forcefully pull him down for a kiss.

You really should get an Oscar for how convincingly you try to get a glance at the ceiling behind his head when all you can think about is how soft your boyfriend’s lips look. Because Sangyeon’s smug expression changes in a blink, his hand coming to rest on your cheek softly, and he’s moving in close enough to rest his forehead against yours, effectively blocking out any view that isn’t him.

“No,” he says. “I promise kissing me will be a much more fun pastime.” The smirk on his face nearly has you giving in.

But, just for your own amusement, you keep the farce up for a few more second and are rewarded with a whiny ‘babyyy’ by your boyfriend.

“What’s up?” You grin, convinced that at the very latest he’s wise to your antics now.

“Can I kiss you?” He whispers, already nothing but an inch away from your face. You can feel the question on your own lips, and looking up into Sangyeon’s eyes, trained so intently on you finally has you break. Your hands shoot up, grabbing his shirt and pulling him flush against you.

“Please,” you breathe as you sneak your arms around his torso and under his top, softly digging your nails into his shoulders, knowing it’ll drive him wild.

He groans, whether from your tone or your ministrations, you don’t know. But all that matters anyway is the way his lips meet yours and start moving in unison, him nipping at your bottom lip until you grant him access.

His free arm maps the side of your body, caressing your waist and hips, grabbing at you until the both of you have to pull away for air after what feels like only seconds.

“Definitely better than staring at your ceiling all afternoon,” you grin, making your boyfriend laugh.

“Better than any other pastime.”

“Still, sorry for sliding for phone across the room.”

Sangyeon huffs an incredulous sigh. “You could’ve gladly yeeted it across the room full force if this was the outcome.” He mutters before crashing his lips onto yours again.

What are the most important video games, books, movies, and/or tv shows that really shaped your taste today?

Oh man, the problem here is not just in remembering which ones that fit the bill but also reducing the numbers so this doesn't become a bloated mess of an answer.

Howevah, I will try.

Video games: I've played most genres growing up and it was a bit of console but gravitated towards PC pretty much by my mid teens. I really thing it was Civilization III that solidified by taste for strategy games after being exposed to Civ II in a bootleg CD game pack, but Red Alert really did a number on me as well - especially Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun. But I cannot lie, Fallout 2 and Fallout: Tactics were instrumental in developing my taste for RPG's and my borderline obsession with the post-apoc genres which I carry with me 25 years later.

I read much more when I was younger, but I only recently had a rediscovery of the earliest science fiction novels I read that without a doubt set the first brick on the road that I would go, and it was the Swedish YA Science Fiction series "Andromeda" published 1979-1986 (I even made a post about it earlier). I am sure it lead me to other classics like War of the Worlds which remain a favourite for me. That, and I think graphic novels might fit - and then Tintin, Spirou, Asterix & Obelix fit as formative. But also the more adult ones like Buddy Longway.

And movies.... man, apart from 1980's and 1990's Disney animated movies that I devoured, I have to say that monster movies of the same time remain close to my heart. Aliens, Predator remain favourites. Jurassic Park was fundamentally formative for a lot of kids of the time, but I also consider Tremors (one and two anyway) to be one of the most fun monster movies out there. In general though, I also think the bad movies that came out were also formative in developing my tastes. Everyone saw the Star Wars prequels - being any kind of sci fi fan meant that they were mandatory viewing - but they never *wowed* me. So, I knew I loved the originals more. Not fanatically so, that is more reserved to-

Jumping into TV-shows specifically, I can't understate how much Star Trek blew my goddamn mind. I have no idea where it started - I remember seeing mid-90's on Swedish Kanal 5 around noon on weekends re-runs of Star Trek TOS, later also DS9, I remember some of the earliest shows I pirated was TNG, AND also religiously watched Babylon 5 also on Kanal 5 when it was a new show, and I followed Voyager -and- Enterprise when they first ran on... SVT 1 or 2, 19:00.

And on that, I just remembered how much I followed ANYTHING Star Trek in the video game space as well. Starfleet Command, Bridge Commander, Klingon Academy, Elite Force, New Worlds, even games that were supposed to come out but never did (Like, Star Trek Borg or whatever the fuck).

But on the note of TV-shows and my youth, I would be remiss if I also did not give a shout-out to Babylon 5. I have a sweet spot for space operas, very much due to this show - and together with TNG it has made me a very, very picky fucker with my science fiction writing. It set a high bar for me. In general, I can remember movies, shows, books and games I grew up with or at least had exposure to, but it takes some introspection to realize which ones actually influenced by - and then by how large of a degree. I still remember the ending scene from the "Death of Computers" Swedish cyberpunk novel nearly 30 years ago when I was not even 10 years old reading it - but did it really shape my taste in fiction? Did reading the follow-up novel give me a love for language, when a space traveler killing a giant alien bird with a laser knife on its last powerpack - but to avoid culturally contaminating the strange human cave men - at the end he just picked up a rock and gesticulated smashing the bird on the head - later on having his partner deliver her baby and the caveman midwife saying "flekka" - and it was strangely similar to the Swedish word girl - "flicka"? And this gave rise to a theory that these people were transplanted by some alien force?

No idea, man. But what I do now is that every so often I see if Good Old Games have released Klingom Academy yet - 23 years after its initial release - and I know that the main composers were two people collaborating, one is the original composer for TNG and also worked on several Star Trek game projects, and the other is Inon Zur - who later worked on Bethesda's Fallout games?

If these games and showes are not influences, I sure do think a lot about them.

When you said you were on season 9, I was like ALREADY?! but then i remember that in one night you can finish half a season to a season depending on how much time you have. oh and i forgot you started watching the show a few months ago so it's not like you started it last week (that would have been impressive, but a little worrying hehe) i've watched, i think only the first two seasons of glee because it appeared on tv and i wanted to know what the show was about but then i dropped it because it became too much too fast. but i kind of like sue's character. wouldn't know how to explain it but she added a nice touch to the show. but then the character became repetitive :/ that's a pity because you can do so much with the villain of a show :(

Oh I have heard things about Going Seventeen. Maybe once I listen to a bit more of their music, I then like to watch dance practices and stages, and THEN I'll give the reality show a go. Thank you for the recommendation though, and the song recs are definitely going on my listen to later list.

It's really interesting how our various biases feel different to us and sort of serve a different purpose, if you will. I don't want to give myself away so I'm going to be purposefully vague here, but one of my Ateez biases is so unbelievably attractive to me, mostly physically but also some major parts of his personality too, so I guess he's what you could call my type although i never really thought I had one hahaha. And another bias I feel like he's literally me, because we're so similar in many ways, but I also feel the need to protect him as well, and perhaps it's because I feel that strong connection to him.

Ah, so Wooyoung has joined the bias line officially then? What about your logbook series, you're going to have to add him to that too 🤣🤣 I agree, he really is the definition of a bias wrecker. If you were ever to change your url to a combination of your Ateez biases instead, it would be so long hahahha woohwayungi maybe?

I think I'm starting to get some ideas for what to make you. I really want it to be something you'll love so I'm putting a lot of thought into it. If you had to choose a favorite era for all four of your boys, what would you pick? Is there any particular styling you like on them? Or a favorite hair style/colour? No detail is too insignificant!

Wooyoung is officially there, he has his tag and is mentioned on the pinned post BUT he is slightly under the three og ones (at least for now…); When I had my “click” moment of realizing and accepting he was a bias as well I did stop think about what I was going to do with the logbook series hahah But for now I decided to keep it just with the tall line… Wooyoung already has a lot of content (Hwa too but 🤫). With svt I made sure to use the first, second and third syllable of each of their names, but I with four biases that wouldn’t work hahahahah I guess to follow the same logic I can start the url with “Jeong” to represent both Yunho and Wooyoung since in hangul they do have the same surname (and I’ll go with Yunho’s romanization since he was here first hahah).. so the url would either be jeongseonggi or jeongminhwa 😂😂

Honorable mention to Rhytm Ta Yunho <3 • So, picture this, I started biasing Mingi when he was still on hiatus based on “old” content, so for the longest time the standard image I had of him was his red hair, ginger Mingi holds a very special place in my heart; Then he came back full power with the grey hair!! Which for me had its peak performance during the Fever Epilogue era (wolf Mingi 🫶) as you can see Fever Epilogue was a VERY GOOD comeback for me, it is also my favorite album overall Honorable mention: whenever he wears glasses • And finally Woo! One word: THANXX!!! give me the bandanas and the ponytail!! YAS and OF COURSE Oreo Woo (or as I like to call it: Raccoon Woo)... “My person is a twenty-one year old nympho who also happens to be a incel,” Mingyu chastises to his screen, closing up the eighth tab of BBC porn he’s seen this week, “he doesn’t know how well he’s avoiding the FBI’s eyes,” Mingyu shakes his head, “so I’ve seen some pretty bad shit, but I’ll take your word for it.”

“No,” he echoes your name like you’ve done the most heinous thing in the world, “no, no! Why would you swipe left on Jackson? You’re way out of his league! He literally looks like he has a pea-sized brain!”

“He does look like he has half a brain cell,” your voice reverberates through his noise-cancelling headphones, unknowingly agreeing to Jihoon’s passionate throw of anger, “but I’m deprived and desperate, so!”

It’s like you can hear his sentiments exactly.

“Literally, you could have any person you want,” Jihoon chastises through his desktop, glaring heavily at your bedroom camera, “you’re wasting your time with these losers!”

Oblivious, you let yourself dangle across the bed. The camera isn’t the best quality, but Jihoon watches intently at the rise and fall of your chest as you attempt to fall into a fitful sleep.

“Some yell at screens for soccer,” Minghao says to the air from his cubicle, “some yell for Starcraft, but Jihoon yells for Tinder like it’s an Olympic sport.”

“Jihoonie,” Mingyu rolls around his chair, resting a long arm over the backrest, “do you have a crush on your civilian?”

Jihoon immediately swivels around his hair, meeting the amused eyes of Mingyu. “No,” he says sharply, whipping around to glare at his screen.

He glares harder the longer Mingyu’s simple question sinks in. He doesn’t have a crush on you, he likes you. Jihoon swallows his sigh, wondering why you would want to go as low as Tinder to look for a potential tryst. From your profile, you’re absolutely beautiful and intelligent. You have simple pleasures that match his—a hot cup of tea right after dark, snuggling under a weighted blanket while watching anime, and sleeping in on Sundays.

Unlike him, you don’t see the world through half a dozen lenses and a plethora of information right at your fingertips. No, you’re lucky.

“Hey can you grab me my water bottle?” Mingyu asks over his shoulder.

Jihoon thinks nothing of it, leaving his post for the thirty seconds it takes to get to the mini-fridge and grab Mingyu’s Hydroflask.

“You got a call,” Mingyu says when he plops the bottle on his desk, indicating to the red blinker on Jihoon’s computer.

It isn’t until he puts on his headphones does he take care to see why his blinker is going off.

He’s getting an incoming call. From you.

You’ve been waiting on the line for about two minutes. He lets two additional minutes breeze by because Jihoon is internally screaming. You’re calling again. There’s a fire blazing in his brain, his fingers hot as he twitches against the spacebar of his keyboard.

From the monitor he can see that you’ve given up on sleep, hands pawing through your drawer so you can take a final swipe at your magenta-tinted lip balm before nesting yourself in the sheets. You’re kicking around as if you don’t have work at 9AM, smacking your lips to apply the shiny salve while you wait for your call to be picked up.

“Why is my civilian calling me,” it isn’t a question, it’s a thinly veiled indication that Jihoon is ready to fight whoever compromised him like this.

Mingyu and Minghao fail to answer. That’s okay, he isn’t opposed to killing both if neither fess up.

It would be so easy for him to ignore the call, or redirect it to another part of the office. Yet he aches to talk to you, for real talk to you. As if you’re just two regular plain-old human beings with normal lives, and as if he didn’t know every nook and cranny about your daily routine and your favorite breakfast foods.

Call it pride, call it confidence, but Jihoon’s been pretty good at games and he hopes prior experience helps him get over this hurdle. Slipping on his headset, he accepts the call and answers in a controlled voice, “This is the local hotline for sexual harassment reports, are you here to report a case?”

Okay, so this is the closest thing he can get to having a full-fledged conversation with you, so he’ll take it.

“Hi,” you mumble your name into the phone, and he nearly disintegrates right then and there. It’s different when he can hear your voice directly in his ears, definitively reaching out to him as opposed to being a fly on the wall, “I received an email that a report was sent out for my previous chat as sexual harassment, but I didn’t send out a report.”

“Yes,” Jihoon replies smoothly, tapping his nails against his thighs, “it’s a new update.”

“Oh, well thank you,” you reply, and Jihoon sees from the camera that you’re staring at your phone in curiosity.

“It’s my job,” he says, and the words hold more weight than you think, “are you okay?”

“Is it also your job to ask how I’m doing?”

He smiles wryly, and he looks up at the monitor to see how you’ve considerably relaxed on your bed. Your legs dangle in the air, and you’re hugging a mango plushie with all the love in the world. “Not really, but I figured I’d ask. I don’t think I’d be able to recover from a dick that looks like an unhinged toenail.”

Your laugh flutters in his ears, and his stomach is flip-flopping with more than just his shitty ramen lunch. Your face curls and wrinkles into happiness at the lewd joke, and you rest your chin on your stuffed fruit.

“I’m okay,” you finally answer, “it’s not the first time I’ve seen subpar dick. But thank you… what’s your name?”

“Uji,” he says, a codename that he considers as precious as his actual name, “feel free to call or text this number if you’re ever feeling uncomfortable and in distress.”

“I’ll keep that in mind, good night Uji.”

“Good night.”

That wasn’t so bad, Jihoon thinks as he hangs up the phone. He dims the monitors to let you freshen up and get ready for bed, as per your schedule. After tonight, he hopes he can be sated with his curiosity of you. Maybe he needs to follow your plans and open up a dating account or something, he feels that he’s starting to get a little too engrossed in your presence.

The waning starts today.

The waning of you did not start that night, in fact it never began. Jihoon’s been on edge for weeks, simultaneously teetering between what he calls the high-school equivalent of the talking stage and an absolute catastrophe.

You kept him on the call for the entirety of dinner preparation, and he couldn’t help but feel a twinge of pride when your pasta turned out perfect and you were happy and full for the entire night.

Weeks later, and you’ve been texting each other for shits and giggles. At first you chalk up your insistence that he’s basically Human Google and has the answers to seemingly anything and everything, but over time it seems that you enjoy your daily interactions with him. Whether it be a simple phone call asking how to unclog your drain or a screenshot comparing two different KitchenAids, he’s at your disposal.

The burner phone he’s been holding as of late is on silent, but he’s able to pick it up immediately. It’s almost intuition, coupled with the way he notices whenever you seem in a pickle and you need to contact him. However he does not have a chance to formulate a reply, as you’re now calling him.

“Couldn’t wait?” he speaks as if you’re familiar with each other, as if you’re friends. Jihoon longs for that so much, he would love to be upgraded to someone other than the IT guy you text for funsies.

“Yes,” you say, voice laced with determination, “I’m deciding on whether to just like or Super-Like this guy on Light a Flame.”

Jihoon deflates a little, but steels himself. You’d never want to go on a date with the IT guy, it seems that you enjoy the anonymity of your recent communications. Your conversations are definitely meme-worthy.

“Who is it?”

“His name’s Lee Jihoon, 25, works in the FBI.”

He chokes on his coffee, precious beans from Argentina, and the liquid is flying across his keyboard.

Pulling up your phone view, it confirms the worst. In a moment of Weakness with a capital W, Jihoon had caved and made a Light a Flame profile the other night. It’s an app reserved for more serious relationships, which means you’ve finally graduated from Tinder.

Turns out that isn’t the case, because you’re currently pursuing his profile and actually kinda-sorta considering him for a potentially serious relationship.

“C’mon, Uji,” you tease lightly, “you always seem to know what to do. This is your area of expertise after all, since you work for that kind of department.”

What should he do, scratch that, what can he do? It’s a complete violation of policy to be fraternizing with his civilian life. Sure, there has been episodes of civilians and agents meeting each other, but only minor violations that both parties forgot about shortly after. He’s so far deep at this point, he can risk being relocated or losing his civilian—losing you.

“Do you think he really works in the FBI?” you say when he doesn’t reply immediately, “he’s really cute, though. Totally looks like my style, and he likes My Hero as well! C’mon, I just need for you to check as to whether he’s a homicidal maniac or a compulsive liar.”

That self-accusation prompts him to slump in defeat, and he mumbles in the phone, “I don’t think he’s worth it. I’d say pass.”

“Hey, Coups has seniority,” Soonyoung pats Jihoon thoughtfully on the back with one hand, and grilling meat with the other. Barbeque always lifted up Jihoon’s spirits. “Why don’t you give it a chance and meet her for real? “And if it doesn’t work out, I just lose her,” Jihoon’s eyes are watering, most likely from the excess smoke around their grill, but it does align with his current state of sadness. “Like I said–” Soonyoung—codename Hoshi, waves his tongs around like a magic wand, “your civilian is super cute, so I would be making a beeline to her house and—”

Jihoon’s favorite is pork belly, so eventually he relents with a timid smile, taking out his chopsticks to appease his friend, “there it is, Uji. Food always makes things better—”

“Uji?”

Both off-duty agents freeze, hearing the familiar ting of your voice as it glares holes into Jihoon’s back. It’s you. Since they’re off the clock, he would have no idea you’d be here. Usually that’s fine, it’s early morning and it’s pretty unlikely that you’d run into your civilian considering you’re supposed to know every second of their schedule. It seems that tonight you’ve varied from the norm.

“Uh, hey?”

His back is still facing you, and he’s side eying Soonyoung in a panic. He’s wearing a cap and a nondescript hoodie, feeling like a shlub as your familiar voice pings back at him with excitement.

“I knew I recognized your voice!” you’re unfazed, definitely not realizing the distress the two men are currently going through. “What a small world, I didn’t think we’d ever actually run into each other!”

“Talk to her, you ass!” Soonyoung hisses, and immediately swivels his chair so he has no choice but to face you.

You’re so, so pretty. Prettier in person, prettier than any crappy 480p screen can give him. This should be a moment of joy for him, after all it’s far too late to go back at this point. You look a little hurt, your face twisted in confusion as you put two and two together.

Soonyoung excuses himself to go to the bathroom, although neither party seems to care. The lame, over-distended EDM music that plays over the cacophony of the barbeque place seems to melt in the atmosphere, much like how the smoke hits the fan, and it’s just you two in the room. Jihoon gestures a pale hand to Soonyoung’s seat, and you take a beat to reluctantly sit yourself down.

You clutch your skirt with both hands, thumbs ringing against the pleats and ironing them out. “So, you’re also Jihoon?” your voice is tiny, small and sad. Jihoon feels liquid guilt inject in his veins, and he wishes he could reach out and pat your shoulder, hold your hand, something. However no matter how much he knows you, he’s a stranger to you. “Why did you lie to me?”

“It’s… complicated,” you shake your head at his pathetic reply, and Jihoon hates this. He feels like he’s drowning in smoke and mirrors and the cloying scent of pork belly is now sticking to all his senses, immobilizing him.

With a cross of your arms, you scoff, “It’s always complicated.”

“Please don’t think I said those things the other night because I don’t want to date you,” Jihoon tumbles the words out like a hamster wheel, wanting to speed up to your pace as fast as he can, “I want to, I really do, but it’s—”

“Complicated.”

“Yeah.”

The two of you sit in silence, letting the noise back into your little bubble. Jihoon feels his stare on you, akin to how a teacher looks over your shoulder during an exam. He robotically eats rice, grain after grain as he lets you have your look.

The slope of his nose, the cotton smooth skin, the lean yet strong stature. You can’t believe he matches the Light a Flame profile perfectly. Other than the frumpy clothes, he matches the man on your phone, a simple picture in a black suit that reminds you strangely of the movie Kingsman. You mentally roll through what you remember from his profile, his hobbies, his likes and dislikes, his occupation—

“Wait,” you pause, your brows knitting together, “so the FBI thing on your profile… is not a joke?”

Jihoon forgets to chew his last bite, and he swallows a whole two centimeters of meat down his throat. Ouch.

“It’s—”

“Complicated.”

The adjective has a whole new meaning now. It’s crazy how in so little words, so much is exchanged between you two. You might not be realizing it, but Jihoon’s so attuned to you he feels like the pick to your guitar, strumming and humming along your chords like it’s second nature. It really isn’t fair, but anticipating your reactions helps greatly.

“There’s things you’re not telling me.”

“Right.”

“And things you can’t tell me,” you add.

“Yes.”

“Then what are some things you can tell me?”

“I’d… rather not here,” Jihoon’s eyes dart around the room, looking for all the pinholes and micro cams attached to the restaurant. By the bonsai, under the table, in the koi tank, “I need to work out some paperwork before anything.”

“Paperwork?”

Jihoon nods mutely, but he looks at you with a litany of emotions in his eyes you’re reeling back in your stool. Why do you feel like this man knows you from a simple five-minute interaction? And why do you feel like you can trust this man with your life?

“Okay,” you finally say.

“Really? Okay?” you think he’s cute, the way his eyes perk up and his back straightens.

“Really.”

Silence fills the space once more. This time however, it feels more at ease.

“The only reason why I’m saying yes,” you pretend to nonchalantly play with your fingertips, a manicure reserved for a date you’ve long abandoned for this evening in favor of a new flame, “is because I think FBI agents are kinda hot.”

A flush blooms on Jihoon’s cheeks, and you can’t help but giggle.
