VLD S8E13: The End is the Beginning
Season 8 Episode 13: The End is the Beginning
Transcript by @dragonofyang
Summary: As the Paladins and Honerva battle, they find themselves at the source of all realities in the final showdown for the very existence of the universe.
[Google Doc]
Keith: We have to take the fight as far away from here as--
Allura: Now let’s finish this!
Lance: Incoming!
Shiro: We can’t let this happen. She can’t get away.
[Transition to the Atlas-Voltron mech floating in a black abyss lit by glowing white tendrils.]
Keith: Is everyone okay?
Lance: Yep.
Pidge: Here.
Allura: Yes.
Shiro: Does anyone have eyes on Honerva?
Lance: What is this place?
Allura: I--I’m not sure.
Honerva: This is the beginning. And the end.
Allura: Can--can you all feel that? These strands are…
Lance: The only remaining realities left in existence.
Pidge: This place is the source of time, of space, of…
Hunk: Everything.
Honerva: I will end this once and for all!
Allura: She’s destroying… all realities!
Keith: She’s destroyed everything. There’s only one reality left.
Allura: No, please. If Honerva destroys this final strand, all of existence will end with it!
[Scene change to a white abyss not unlike the rift, but it’s the source of all realities.]
Honerva: Where are we?
Allura: The connected consciousness of all existence.
Honerva: You think you’re safe here? Soon all will cease to exist.
Hunk: You have to stop this. All these worlds, all these realities, they deserve to live.
Honerva: Those realities are flawed and weak, living out the same pathetic cycle of war and pain.
Allura: There is beauty in their flaws. I lost my father, my mother, my planet to this war, but I’ve gained a new family and a purpose stronger than any I could have imagined.
Pidge: Humans began very flawed. There were wars, hate. But with each mistake, they learned and grew.
Shiro: And now we reach out to other worlds to pass on those same lessons and spread them across the entire universe. Like your people once did.
Hunk: And with every new world touched, the message grows.
Keith: Every world, every reality. We wouldn’t exist without the others.
Lance: Our differences are what make us stronger.
Honerva: You think your words mean anything to me? I’ve lived multiple lifetimes, and all of them filled with pain and loss. If I cannot experience the simple joys of life, why should anyone else?
Allura: There was a time when you loved more than just your family, a time when your fascination with how vast the universe is gave way to your desire to help and uplift others.
Lotor: The beginning of Altean alchemy.
Honerva: You tried to help him.
Lotor: ...the tales you grew up with…
Honerva: He was happy. He deserved better. Better than I could give.
Allura: Lotor may have been misguided, but ultimately he wanted to preserve life. Honor your son. Help me change this.
Honerva: I’m sorry, but the damage is done. There’s nothing left to save.
Allura: I can change the quintessence within your vessel. Your son helped me learn how to transform it from a destructive force into a life-giving force. But I cannot do it alone.
Honerva: But, that would require…
Allura: I know the risks. I’m afraid this is where we part ways.
Hunk: Wait, what?
Keith: Allura.
Lance: What?
Pidge: No.
Allura: This is our only chance to undo what has been done, to save all of existence. I have to take it. It is my purpose. Your paths go on. Mine ends here.
Hunk: But there is no Voltron without you.
Allura: Voltron isn’t needed anymore. The rest of the work is up to the people. And they’ll have you to guide them, Hunk. Goodbye, Pidge.
Pidge: I’m gonna miss you, Allura.
Allura: Remain curious and fearless.
Shiro: Most of them won’t know the sacrifice you made so they could live.
Allura: And they’ll never need to. Your selflessness taught me that. Thank you.
Shiro: You never have to thank me for anything.
Allura: Keith… I cannot thank you enough for all you’ve given me.
Keith: Allura, when you accepted me, it helped me to accept myself. Thank you.
Allura: There is greatness in your heart and in your actions.
Lance: No. Allura, there--there has to be another way.
Allura: There is no other way. This is all we have.
Lance: But you’re too important to the cause. You’re--you’re too important to me.
Allura: I’ll always be with you, Lance. And I’ll always love you.
[Transition to the two mechs once more as all realities explode from between the two of them and the paladins wake up.]
Keith: Is this…? Are we…?
Pidge: Yeah. It’s our reality.
Lance: She did it. She saved us all.
Hunk: I don’t remember that planet being there before.
Lance: It’s Altea.
[Timeskip transition, with the text reading “One Year Later…” as we open on the flame of Feyiv.]
Keith: With the return of Planet Daibazaal, the Galra Empire is at a crossroads. For too long, the people of this extraordinary civilization have been manipulated by a dictatorship that placed a misguided sense of self-preservation above all else. It was a tragic, unfortunate series of events that led us down this dark, never-ending path of power and greed. But now we, the citizens of the Galra Empire, have an opportunity to make right all of the injustices set into motion by our forefathers. Because of the sacrifice made by Princess Allura, we have been given a second chance to come together in rebuilding the Galra Empire by joining the Galactic Coalition and ushering in a new era of peace across the universe.
[Scene change to the IGF-Atlas flying through deep space.]
Male Chancellor: Your armies have attacked us at every turn.
Female Chancellor: If you had just agreed to our terms, the attacks would not be necessary.
Male Chancellor: You are occupying a peaceful settlement!
Female Chancellor: Our people were starving!
Hunk: Chancellors. Please, sit. Dinner is served. The filet of bandrillo, spiced with the seasoning from the plains of planet Mabo, alongside pilaf of long-grain forlongian brill from the vast fields of Antidoll. And it’s accompanied by a cider made from the petals of the Altean juniberry flower. Bon appetit.
Female Chancellor: Delicious.
Hunk: And it wouldn’t be possible without the cooperation of all three planets of the Xritoo system. Much like my cooking crew, comprised of aliens from all across the cosmos working together to bring you this delicious meal. Princess Allura, the very person we celebrate on this day, once said, “We are always stronger together.” If the people of your planets work together, so much more can be achieved.
Shiro: Honor her by following in her footsteps and walk in the path towards peace.
[Scene change to Pidge and Matt in a robotics lab as they build an android.]
Pidge: All done.
Matt: So, have you been thinking of any names?
Pidge: Yeah, I was thinking of Chip.
Matt: You and your puns.
Colleen: Katie, your father’s got the teludav all warmed up for you. Better get going. You don’t want to be late.
Matt: Don’t worry, Pidge, I’ll have Chip all ready to go by the time you get back.
Pidge: Just don’t initialize until I return. I want to witness Chip’s first moments of consciousness.
Sam: Have a good time, honey.
Pidge: I will, Dad.
[Scene change to New Altea, where a new Castle of Lions is being constructed.]
Merla: Construction is on course.
Coran: Ah, most excellent! How are the preparations for tonight’s feast coming? It has to be perfect. It will be the first Celebration of Allura. The first of many to come.
Merla: As soon as we can get access to the location, we can begin setup. But it’s currently occupied by your friend, sir.
Lance: And had Princess Allura not seen that there was still good left in Honerva, we most likely would not be sitting here today. She grew to understand that there is good in everyone.
Balmera Girl: Even Emperor Zarkon?
Lance: Yes, even Emperor Zarkon.
Balmera Girl: Do you miss her?
Lance: I do. Very much. But I’m reminded of her everywhere I look. So in that way, she’s still very much with me. With all of us, actually.
Altean Child: Now that you no longer pilot the Red Lion, what do you do?
Lance: Well, I help run a small farm back on my home planet with my family. It’s a simple life, just the way I like it.
Altean Instructor: Alright, everybody, I think Paladin Lance has somewhere to be in a few doboshes, and you all have class to get back to.
Kids: Aw!
[Scene change to the paladins and Coran all sitting at a table loaded with food in front of Allura’s memorial statue.]
Pidge: I mean, seriously, though, Earth has come a long way. It’s a hub for all alien activity now that my dad’s stabilized his teludav technology.
Shiro: That’ll make travel on the Atlas much easier. We’ll be able to reach so many more sectors with the improved mobility. Not to mention the supplies we’ll save with the shorter journey.
Hunk: Yeah, yeah! We’ll have so much more room for the cooking ingredients. People are just so much easier to reason with when they’re full. Man, this diplomacy thing isn’t nearly as easy as Allura made it look.
Keith: Right? But then, she did make everything look easy.
Shiro: Speaking of which, how are things going on Daibazaal?
Keith: We’re calling for an election to select the Galran representative for the Galactic Coalition. So that’s a step in the right direction.
Lance: Let me guess, they asked you to be their leader and you said no?
Keith: Yeah, pretty much.
Lance: Classic Keith.
Coran: Allura would be proud of your decision, Keith. I think she knew that you would always be the key to the Galra’s future. Just around this table, I see so many lives touched by her actions. For some of us she was a diplomat, a teacher, a leader, and a friend. But to those of us around this table, she will always be family. To Allura!
Paladins: To Allura!
[Scene change to Lance’s quarters in the middle of the night.]
Lance: Huh?
[Scene change to the epilogues, which are without dialogue. The text narration follows in order.]
The Holt family established the next generation of Legendary Defenders.
Hunk created a culinary empire, bringing the universe together, one meal at a time.
Lance continued to spread Allura’s message while surrounding himself with the things he loved.
Kolivan and Krolia became the Galra representatives to the Galactic Coalition.
Keith helped transition the Blade of Marmora to a humanitarian relief organization.
Shiro found his happiness and finally left the battle behind.
End.

63 Ciruela - Our home & a little history + rambling thoughts
Our home is named the house of Sweet Dreams. Every home here has a ceramic plate with a house name on it. When you buy property in Mexico, it basically comes with everything in it already including beds, furniture, silverware, coffee makers, pots & pans, etc.
The owner Maty and her husband live in LA. His parents live on site and manage the space. It’s so nice having Maria & Ramon on site to answer any questions. Maty responds right away via WhatsApp, also,
For our stay, cleaning once a week is included, laundry is free although since being here for just 9 days, the dryer has been broken twice. Maty is looking into getting a new unit asap, though. They bought this place just one month ago so are kinda figuring out what needs to be fixed based on the complaints that come in. Not the best way to figure things out but hopefully people are understanding.
Our stove and oven are pretty old. To turn them on, you have to use a lighter. So you turn the dial, and then take the lighter to add the flame. I don’t mind doing this every morning. It’s really quick & easy. I’ve been enjoying some of these aspects. The stove gets super hot which is awesome and cooks our food perfectly. I don’t cook much but will make us breakfast, coffee, maybe some pasta for lunch.
I really like our place. I can’t quite understand why but I just feel an overwhelming love & peace here. I think I love how tiny it is, there is minimal cleaning. We only have 4 small plates, 4 large plates, 4 bowls, 4 coffee mugs, 4 plastic water cups. It’s so easy to maintain and keep tidy. We don’t have a ton of clothes and since laundry is so scarce I really appreciate when I get the opportunity to do it. Unlike in the states when I hated the loads of laundry we had to do. The cleaning service comes in once a week for the sheets, bathroom, floors. They will also do any dishes in the sink. it’s so nice. I never leave dishes for them, I enjoy doing the dishes in the morning. In our airbnb we did have a dishwasher but I don't feel the need to use it.
There’s a simplicity here that is so calming. No worries in a way. I did request a new coffee maker because this one requires more water than coffee comes out and you have to push a button for the coffee to come out and it is the thinnest slowest drip. I think the unit in general could use a simple and working coffee machine.
The shower head is the only other upgrade needed for this place. It works fine but kinda shoots out in random places and is so high up that the pressure is not as strong. I am short, though. So I mentioned that if she is going to come and do upgrades, that could be a good one.
Overall I feel very safe, I love the roosters that crow all day long. A couple nights there has been a cat meowing in distress that wakes me up. Matt went out to find it and scare it away twice but couldn't find it. That’s hard because the sound feels so close. One night it was screaming in distress. The second time just meowing at 4am. We are hoping no more cats come back.
The main road in our neighborhood is dirt and then getting onto the Main Street that takes you to town is cobblestone. Luckily there are sidewalks because it’s really hard to wheel the stroller or wagon on the cobblestone. Sayulita was declared a Pueblo Magico years ago so the government helps fund the city. With this money they received public benches, trash bins, and paved some of the main roads.
Supposedly 5 years ago it only cost $10,000 to build a house. Now it’s closer to $50,000. The gentrification in this area is different than in the states. In the states people renting get pushed out of their neighborhoods because they can no longer afford the rent. But here, all the Mexicans own their property. So if they sell, they are leaving with a big chunk of change. And, of course, they don’t need to sell. They could always develop it themselves. There has been a lot of change in the past 50 years as tourism began. The older generations said it was great living in Sayulita until the tourists came with their money. The poor people lived on the beach as it was less desirable. You couldn’t farm your land near the beach, the ocean water ruins buildings, etc. So it’s been a huge shift in the city to see the poor become rich through developing their properties.
There isn’t much crime here. The cartel is in charge. People don’t mess with the tourists because they bring in the money. A few years ago, there was some riff raff going on where tourists wallets were getting stolen with their passports, etc. There was a Facebook page with a number you could call to let them know your stuff got stolen. The cartel would get involved and make sure their documents and whatever else was returned. For that reason, there is a sense of safety here. There is legit law & order. You don’t mess with the cartel. A few weeks ago there was a murder in Puerto Vallarta which is really rare but it was a political crime. It was completely planned. That’s the different. In America, you can walk down the street and accidentally get killed because of gang violence. Here it’s different. No one is selling drugs unless they go through the cartel, no one is stealing unless it’s through the cartel. The law & order makes people feel safe. I wish we could enact stricter punishments in America. It’s ridiculous that we are accepting all the riots, looting, crime going on in the name of racial equality or whatever else. It’s bullshit.
I’ve learned a lot about American culture being here. We are literally so spoiled and entitled that we have no problems, so we create them. Our streets are clean, our appliances work, we have access to anything we could possibly want through amazon, fed ex, etc. Three numbers and we can dial the police for help, we can choose where we want to live, we have paved roads and easy access to get anywhere. We have 100 different park and grocery store options. Everyone has a smart phone and a car.
It’s different in Mexico. The trash system is good but could be improved. Many appliances could be improved. The beaches, streets, park could definitely use a clean up crew. You can't even put toilette paper in the toilette. You eat what you grow, what you caught, or what you have. There are problems to be solved so people aren’t looking towards some idealistic vision of life. They are happy with what they have. I wish Americans could be happy with what they have. I mean, in Mexico, I don’t really even know if there is a democratic system because the cartel is in charge. I’m sure there is a downside to that. They don’t have a bunch of red tape and regulations. People can work. It’s just different. It’s simple. You mind your own business, you don’t judge, you become okay in the dust, the dirt, the garbage, the dog poop on the streets. It’s a different and more accepting type of life.

Chutes & Ladders: the Selkirk Mountain Experience
Last year, our friends Carrie and Dave abandoned the worst ski season in Colorado for whiter pastures in our Neighbor to the North. They came back with tales of amazing powder skiing, eye-popping terrain, and a very intense ski guide and his family who live for most of the year in a helicopter-accessed chalet at the foot of the Durrand Glacier in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia. They had a blast, but were thinking how much more fun it would be to have a crew of friends with them to enjoy the trip. Andy and I were lucky enough to be included among the invitees. So, on February 9, 2019, we assembled in the lobby of the Best Western in Revelstoke, Canada to begin our week of backcountry touring.
Below, you can see us  at the top of the Ruth Glacier, one of the hair-ball descents of the trip (read on...). Ruedi, our guide, is at left. In no particular order, we are Joe, Tryg, Heather, Peter, Carrie, Dave, Andy, Me, Erica, Bo, and our tail guide Nicole. Ruedi’s daughter and co-guide Florina took the photo.
Tumblr media
The day-to-day of this trip was as follows: get up at 6 AM, pack yourself a sandwich and snacks for the day’s tour. Pack your ski pack and put on your ski clothes. At 7 AM, eat a monster breakfast: usually oatmeal AND eggs AND toast, and excellent Mokka-style coffee. At this point, you’ve gotten the directive regarding whether it’s skins on or off, and if you are not ready to leave by 8 AM you will be left behind. Ruedi, who established Selkirk Mountain Experience in 1985, is Swiss, and everything runs like a Swiss watch. On time, efficient, and exactly how he wants it. Then we set off for the day’s adventure of touring and fantastic skiing in the huge and wild Selkirks. We returned to the chalet each day by 3 PM (except for the two nights of hut-to-hut skiing, more on that later), where Chef Tommy had happy hour snacks ready for us. After some snacks, it was time for a sweat in the sauna and a shower. Dinner was the only event that didn’t occur at a precise time - but was usually around 6:15 - 6:30. Dinner was a gourmet affair: soup, salad, main course, and dessert. After dinner, we tried to rally and socialize, but usually didn’t make it much later than 8 or 8:30 before we all disappeared to our rooms to do it again the next day.
Ruedi & Florina, his daughter, were with us for the whole trip!
Tumblr media
Dave, making lunch for the day’s tour.
Tumblr media
The wacky Canadians, Jake and Gavin, convinced me to do a couple of snow rolls after sweating in the sauna. It was surprisingly refreshing!
Tumblr media
I have only one other experience with guided skiing, but I think ski guides do try to push you to the comfortable edge of your limits. I certainly thank Jim and Peter in Japan for dragging me up Kurodake, where the butterflies in my stomach nearly had me vomit, but I had the best ski run of my life (at that point). Ruedi was no exception. After our first lovely full day of skiing, in which his powder-hound nose took us to the few closely-accessible powder stashes, he had made a decision about what our group was capable of. I would find out later that his idea of his client’s edge is a little different from mine!
One of the descents from day one. Fun! If you look carefully, you can see our tracks coming from the saddle to the right of the peak at left.
Tumblr media
We received the pronouncement after Sunday dinner that our group would be embarking on a two night, three day hut-to-hut trip. Over the years, Ruedi has built two outlying huts on his land lease from the Canadian government: the Moloch (1988) and Empire Lakes (2014) huts. We were to assemble our gear for overnight (silk liner bags and headlamps, and a package of perishable food for dinners) and be ready to go in the morning.
The morning of our departure was a balmy -20 Celsius. A polar front had settled over BC, so we had all been skiing in every layer we brought - we were already a ripe-smelling crew by day 3. Our tour took us up the Durrand Glacier and to the top of Hidden Peak for a warm-up lap. I was heartened by the mellow skiing: the day before had provided some acrophobic thrills at the top of Tumbledown Mountain and a couple of steep ski pitches, so I thought perhaps our hut tour would be more relaxed. How wrong I was. At the bottom of Hidden Peak, we put skins back on for an easy tour to the top of Ruth Glacier. After a photo op, Ruedi gave us a directive for skiing the next line:
“You can ski right or left of my track. But when I make the traverse, do not short-cut in or out of it, because there is a crevasse.”
He drew a little picture in the snow to elaborate on where, exactly, we could die if we didn’t follow his directions.
I did not feel like the glacier was easy skiing, regardless of certain death awaiting me if I didn’t follow his instructions. It was quite steep (at least 40 degrees), and the snow was DEEP. With my heavy pack, I managed to bungle it pretty well, but only took two tele-barrel rolls. However, the group all made it down, and we traversed above some cliffs to the base of the Angel’s Crest. From here, Ruedi put in a series of kick turns up the steep slope. Just as I was thinking I didn’t need to have ALL the fun in one day and was wishing I was at the hut, we topped out. The turns down were absolutely worth it. See below.
This was fantastic skiing - 30 perfect turns on a consistent not-too-steep pitch. Ladies skied on looker’s right. The boys on the left made a big ol’ mess.
Tumblr media
Of course, you don’t get anything for free, so the exit from this amazing ski involved a side step down a 45 degree couloir.
Tumblr media
No pictures of the actual couloir (I was a little busy), but Andy snapped the picture above of some of our group coming out. I was so grateful for the presence of women on this trip, and for Ruedi’s daughter Florina as one of our guides. It definitely takes a lot for me to face up to my fear of heights and scary things in general, and it was so helpful to have Carrie, Heather, and Erica to lean on when I got scared. Also, Florina was amazingly encouraging about everything - she was a great foil to her dad!
We were rewarded for the final slog up the Dismal Glacier (it’s really named that) to Moloch Hut with a fine dinner of risotto! Below you can see Ruedi, cooking away.
Tumblr media
At breakfast the next morning, Ruedi wasn’t sure about the prospect of good skiing on the tour to the next hut, so he asked if we wanted to see the ice cave. Since the cave provided a brief respite from the frigid temps, we all agreed enthusiastically to the brief side trip. The cave is, unfortunately, forming due to climate change, but was a fascinating diversion.
Tumblr media
We left the cave and set out across the top of the Dismal Glacier. The direction we were heading was straight into a rocky headwall, but to our left was a gentle slope. I was skiing right behind Ruedi, so I asked optimistically if we would be heading left.
“No. We go there.” Points straight ahead with ski pole.
I comforted myself once more with my friend Matt’s expression that “the trail always finds a way,” and surely there was a sneaky way to skin to the top of the cliffs I saw in the distance. Well, that thought at least quelled the butterflies for the half a mile it took to get to the cliffs. As we approached, I saw ladders attached to the rock. You read that correctly - LADDERS. Having spent two weeks in the Dolomites last summer, my heart sank. I knew exactly where Ruedi was taking us, but I had to ask anyway. Ruedi, I said, are we going up the ladders?
He stops. Looks at me. “You look very serious.” Keeps skinning.
Shit.
Tumblr media
I’ve been practicing meditation for two years, and it really came in handy. My admonitions to myself to breathe and not think about anything else got me to the top with minimal panic. But still some panic.
Thus I learned that sometimes the ski tour is more intense than the skiing. That day and the following days, I experienced several moments where I had to go to my happy place during the tour and pretend I couldn’t see all the ways I could die, only to be rewarded with thousands of vertical feet of absolutely blissful turns. On the last day, we were to ascend Woolsey Peak, which Carrie, Heather, and Erica assured me was mellow and not scary at all. It was snowing that day, so we set off with warm (-5 celsius) temperatures and milk jug visibility. Most days started with 2-3 hours of touring, and this last day was no different. Up we went on a relatively gentle grade. We started to traverse a slope on which I was grateful for the lack of visibility: traversing steep slopes makes me nervous, but see no evil, fear no evil, right? We reached a narrow saddle, left and right of which looked like nothing I wanted to go up. Ruedi went up the steep slope to the right, and stood on a narrow perch. He knocked off a bit of cornice. Two of the guys had followed him up. I looked where he was standing and hesitated - why did we ALWAYS have to ski from the highest point? What was wrong with the saddle? Ruedi saw me balking.
“Get up here. You don’t have time to shit your pants!”
With those kind words of encouragement, what could I do but go up?
Once again, we were rewarded. The last big run of the trip was 3500 vertical feet of powder. Yes, we had to climb back up it, but it was absolutely worth it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Above Nicole is leading the charge up Grizzly with part of our group. She was a fantastic tail guide! Loved being around so many tough women on this trip.
Andy and I went into this trip looking forward to spending a week with Dave and Carrie. Our trip to Japan two years ago with them had been so great, we were excited to take another ski trip with them. We hoped for good skiing, but knew that one has to temper one’s expectations on ski trips, or be sorely disappointed. Our expectations were exceeded, to be sure. Quality time with good friends filled my heart, as did the week of deep belly laughs with our new friends that we met through Carrie and Dave. It felt like a week of Adult Camp / Slumber Party, topped off with outrageous skiing. We will be back!
A few more pictures for your enjoyment. Below are Heather and Tryg, as we head back up Forbidden Peak after a stellar first lap of the day from the Empire Lakes Hut.
Tumblr media
Carrie and Erica, bundled up to start the day’s tour from Empire Lakes Hut!
Tumblr media
Left to right: Nicole, Bo, Andy, Jake, enjoying a few moments at the transition to touring. You had to watch Ruedi like a hawk during transitions. As soon as he puts away his sandwich and thermos and takes off his puffy jacket, you know you only have moments to be ready to skin before he admonishes you for taking too long!
Tumblr media
All smiles on the first day!
Tumblr media
Andy coming out of the chalet! That’s a LOT of snow.
Tumblr media
Pow turns and more pow turns!

French Truly Immersion Course – Eric’s Testimonial
French Truly Immersion Course - Eric's testimonial
In case you didn’t know yet, I organize & teach French Immersion Courses here in France, and you are about to watch Eric’s testimonial about the French Truly Immersion French Language Course she took here in France with me and 7 other students (the maximum amount of participants is 8 for a connected & intimate French language learning experience).
 ERIC’S TESTIMONIAL
“Hello everybody!
I would highly recommend Virginie’s immersion trips! My story is I started studying French by myself, I went to France, I loved the language, I’ve always wanted to learn another language so I thought I’d love to try my hand at French.
So I started finding some videos online. There are French videos everywhere on Youtube and Virginie’s videos popped up in my newsfeed so I clicked on one and you how Youtube works another video gets suggested from that channel and eventually I thought “Hey I think this lady knows what she’s talking about!”
So I subscribed to her channel. Virginie talked about this immersion trip she was planning so I emailed her and she emailed me back. We scheduled a Skype call and it went very well. I was kind of nervous about it because I didn’t think I was that good but I was able to understand everything she said and that gave me a lot of confidence.
So I signed up for her trip and the trip’s been great! She’s very knowledgeable, very attentive, very helpful. I would highly recommend this trip to anybody who wants to improve their French and take it to the next level. If you’re already pretty good it will get you even further. And if you’re not so good it will take you where you need to be to improve even better.“
Here’s Eric & Sharie making organic soap at La Savonnerie du Pilat. The owner & artisan Samuel teaches workshops on how to make your own organic soap. Of course the students get to keep all the soap they make during this workshop! Great memories!
Eric about to learn how to cook with saffron. Valérie, an organic saffron farmer, taught us how to make saffron chocolate ganache and saffron choux pastry! Délicieux!
Eric along with the rest of our lovely group of students before a blues concert taking place in a medieval Castle!
 FRENCH LANGUAGE COURSE – IMMERSION
Daily French language classes & enriching adventures (visit local artists, meet wine makers, cooking class, etc.) with French people… ALL IN FRENCH! Viens avec nous!
 100% FRENCH EXPERIENCE
How best to improve your French conversation skills than by being in France, surrounded with French culture and French people who will ONLY speak French to you? Yet so many times I have heard visitors express their disappointment at not really being given the chance to practice their French. Why? Because more & more French people, especially in big cities, speak English fairly well and are just so excited to practice their new skills with you! This ends up being nice and comfortable for you but not so satisfying or helpful for improving your French speaking ability!
 DAILY FRENCH CLASSES
This is the reason why I have created this 7 DAY IMMERSION FRENCH LANGUAGE COURSE for you, filled with daily classes & enriching adventures with French people who will only speak French with you. No English! It’s amazing how much you can learn and retain in such a conducive atmosphere in as little as 7 days. Mornings will be dedicated to French language learning via classes and afternoons will be filled with interesting activities such as: visiting local artists or entrepreneurs workshops, meeting with local wine makers and farmers, guided hike in nature, cooking class, painting class, cinema, & museum… all in French! The most authentic French language learning experience you’ll ever encounter!
WANT TO FEEL EXTRA READY? LEARN FRENCH ONLINE!
If you love to learn French online for the wonderful flexibility it offers, here’s a quick intro to my latest online French language course: 600 WORDS.
 600 WORDS + FEEDBACK
If you are a beginner or at an intermediate level wanting to reinforce your foundations and if you love to learn French online, you’ll love my French language course 600 WORDS! This online French language course will prove to you you can express yourself like the average French person with only 600 words. You will gain access to 15 videos (+ 10 bonus ones) to help & accompany you every step of the way through the French language course + for each word, each sentence, each expression, each conjugated verb, I have created an audio file of my voice, slow and slightly faster speed. Adding the registration link to this French language course HERE.
Here’s some feedback from Matt, one of my online students
“The course is well laid out and easy to follow.  I love the clean audio files. It benefits you to have such a lovely speaking voice. It clarifies things. This is a bargain Virginie. Thanks for giving me early access pricing.  I think you have provided tremendous value. This motivates me to venture outside of my Mason jar. Lots of work ahead but now I look forward to it. I’m sure I will see progress quickly. Merci! Your normal price is still extremely low in my eyes. I’m not just saying that to be nice. I analyze value and I rarely pull the trigger on much these days. Money is hard to come by (as you well know as a businesswoman), so it must be worth it.”
Matt Molnar
Whether you love to learn French online or are eager to live a unique & efficient French language learning experience, you’ll find your perfect French language course here! I am also working on new online French language courses to complete your 600 WORDS experience so stay tuned!

Today, we’re releasing a couple massive updates to the courses. Based on reader feedback, changes in the industry, and updated best practices, we update the courses every year to ensure that they have the best and most current information possible on how to succeed in the travel industry.
And, because it’s also Cyber Monday, we’re heavily discounting the courses too! It’s a double win! Also, all my ebooks will be on sale too! Triple win!
First, you can get all my e-books and guides 50% off for the next 24 hours. You’ll get all my destination guides plus my guide to travel hacking and teaching English overseas. My guides take what you love about this site and supercharge it. They go into a level of depth not found on the website and help you be the best traveler in any destination! They are written for budget travelers and those wanting to get off the beaten track when they travel.
As Edward said about my Thailand guide, “One of the best things about Matt’s book is that it avoids all the frivolous details that so many travel guides have nowadays. This book gets straight to the point – and helps you avoid all the tourist traps. I went to Thailand not knowing what to expect and reading this guide eased my fears. It was like a cheat sheet to best the country had to show me. There was never a moment I felt “lost.” This was a great guide and I definitely plan to buy more.”
My travel hacking guide will help you unlock the mystery of points and miles and have traveling first class for free in no time. Travel hacking is what makes constant travel affordable. As Rusty said, “Matt’s guide has unlocked a whole new way to travel. His book was an eye-opener — it explained the concept and language of travel hacking in a way that is easy to read and understand. Since buying his book six months ago, I have accumulated nearly 300,000 points. Now, I’m repeating the steps for my wife so we can have double the miles for our future trips!”

The Business of Blogging
There’s a seemingly endless pool of travel blogs out there. Every day hundreds of people think, “Hey, I travel, so I’m going to start a blog and try to make a living out of this like all these people I see online.”
While there are plenty of blogs, there’s not a lot of well-run blogs, which gives you plenty of opportunity to succeed. You need to be like the cook who says, “This place is good, but I can do better and then opens up a successful restaurant!
Imagine being able to share your experience with the world. Imagine setting your own schedule, traveling wherever — and whenever — you want, inspiring others to travel — and getting paid to do it. Wouldn’t it be great if you could turn your love of travel into a paying gig while helping others at the same time?
In this course, I am here to be your mentor and walk you through the entire process of establishing a successful blog. Think of me as your training wheels.
I’ll take you behind the curtain: you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at how I run my website; never-before-seen screenshots of my systems; and my tips, tricks, and blogging advice.
With this update version of the course, you’ll also get:
Expanded advice on choosing a blog name, picking a niche, and developing your brand. Since many students got tripped up on this part of the process, we added some tips and checklists so you can do this quicker and better.
An expanded section on setting up a newsletter, with added screenshots and guides so you can install your newsletter easily
An updated and expanded section on making e-books, including how to come up with an idea, write and edit your book, and set the price
A new way to design and write your product pages to increase the number of people who purchase your book
An added section on influencer marketing and how to succeed at it
An added section on setting up a shopping cart
An added section on how to network at conferences
Added sections on basic HTML and CSS coding (we’ll help you master tech)
Added sections on how you can adjust your theme
We’ve updated all our videos and screenshots; created new walk-throughs, charts, and visual aids; and reorganized the content so the course is structured in a more logical order.
Additionally, we now have monthly office hours during which I’ll answer your questions and give feedback over the phone.
This update continues to make our program the most robust and informative out there. It will teach you how to run a sustainable business and succeed in the world of travel media for the long haul.
The course is normally $299 but, as part of our Cyber Monday deal, this course is 33% off for the next 24 hours.

The Art of Travel Vlogging

Our Photography and Writing Courses

*** There’s never going to be a moment when you have enough time. If you wait for the perfect moment to start your blog, you’ll be waiting forever. And you’ll always be wondering “what if…”
But with lifetime access to these courses, you’ll have plenty of time to turn what you love into something more.
I know when you are new to blogging, spending a couple hundred dollars on a course is not the easiest thing in the world. I remember when I started blogging and was making zero money. But what is your time worth? Would you rather waste it trying to figure it out yourself — and probably getting it wrong — or pay to get the right information right away so you can save time, work smarter, and start earning quicker?
Many people think all they need is information. They say things like, “I could find that information for free!” or “I found this other free mini-course. That’s all I need.”
Sure, there’s tons of free information on the web.
But if all someone needed was information, wouldn’t everyone be a wild success? Why would we need doctors when we have WebMD? Mechanics when we have YouTube? Universities when you have a podcast? I could read a book on gardening, but that doesn’t mean I’d be a world-class gardener.
No, you need more than information. You need someone who can make sense of it. Someone who can guide you, answer your questions, give advice, help you problem-solve and distill all that information, and speed up your success.
That’s what we do with these courses. We are your mentors. We take your through the vast amount of information out there, show you what works and what doesn’t so you save time, avoid making mistakes, and supercharge your journey to success.
So take advantage of my Cyber Monday sale and get started! The sale end tomorrow at 10am EST.
P.S. – Don’t forget you can get all my e-books and guides for $49.99 for the next 24 hours too. That’s a 50% savings! Click the link here to get the deal or click here to learn more!

Cyber Monday: All Books and Courses Up to 50% Off!
Are you looking to get into the travel industry? Well, you’re in luck. Though I don’t talk about it often (well, at least compared to my books), I have a travel media school called Superstar Blogging, with courses on blogging, photography, vlogging/YouTube, and travel writing.
The destination guides include all my favorite hostels, restaurants, and bars — spots you probably won’t find listed elsewhere – as things to see in ado in each place.
And the teaching English book will help you get a job, teach overseas, pay off your debt, and have a life changing experience. Teaching overseas was one of the best things I’ve done in my life.

Now, to the courses:

Delivering on the Promise of Delivery and Snaplications
Grubhub completing Eat24 acquisition as Bite Squad gobbled up local delivery services top the headlines on this edition of MRM’s Daily Bite. Send news items to Barbara Castiglia at [email protected].
Grubhub Closes on Eat24 Acquisition
Grubhub Inc. closed its acquisition of Eat24 from Yelp. Yelp previously announced its plan to sell Eat24 as part of a strategic partnership with Grubhub to integrate online ordering from all Grubhub restaurants onto the Yelp local goods and services platform. The partnership with Grubhub became effective upon the closing of the sale, and is expected to increase the number of order-enabled restaurants on Yelp to approximately 75,000 when fully implemented.
“Grubhub creates unmatched value for our restaurant partners and the best possible experience for diners,” said Matt Maloney, Grubhub CEO. “Eat24’s loyal diner base and extensive restaurant selection will satisfy more diners while driving more orders to restaurants and our drivers. We couldn’t be more excited about the Eat24 acquisition and Yelp partnership.”
With the close of the Eat24 deal, Grubhub has completed all three of the acquisitions discussed on its second quarter earnings call, including Foodler and OrderUp. In connection with these acquisitions, Grubhub has refinanced its existing credit facility with a new five-year, $350 million committed facility, consisting of a $125 million term loan and an expanded $225 million revolving credit facility.
“With the sale of Eat24 now complete, we are excited to begin our long-term partnership with Grubhub,” said Jeremy Stoppelman, Yelp’s co-founder and chief executive officer. “This partnership will enhance our consumer product offering in Yelp’s highest trafficked category by adding tens of thousands of additional restaurants for online ordering and delivery.”
Yelp received approximately $251.7 million in cash at closing, which remains subject to customary post-closing adjustments, and an additional $28.8 million in cash will be held in escrow for an 18-month period after closing to secure Grubhub’s rights of indemnification. Yelp will update its full year 2017 financial outlook, reflecting the expected financial impact of the sale of Eat24 and Grubhub partnership, upon reporting the third quarter 2017 financial results.
Bite Squad Completes Local Delivery Acquisition and Integration
Bite Squad, an online and mobile food ordering and delivery service, completed the acquisition and integration of 17 local restaurant delivery companies as part of its strategy to consolidate the fragmented restaurant delivery service industry and expand the company’s national footprint to more than 30 metropolitan areas across the United States.
Aloha2Go, Ashley’s Food, Café Courier Ohio, Chef Shuttle, Delicious Deliveries, Doorstep Delivery, Foodie Call, FoodNow, Gainesville2Go, Goodybag, Grub Cab, Restaurants Express, Room Service in Paradise, Takeout Taxi Maryland, 2 Dollar Delivery, 256ToGo, and 864ToGo are now operating under the Bite Squad banner and are seamlessly powered by Bite Squad’s market-leading technology, operational systems, and a fleet of several thousand W2-employed delivery drivers.
“By integrating our premier delivery experience to as many customers and geographies as we can, we continue to achieve rapid growth and efficiencies,” said Kian Salehi, CEO and co-founder of Bite Squad. “Our platform was built to scale, enabling us to quickly integrate acquisition targets and leverage our operational excellence. Now powered by our best-in-class ordering, routing, and dispatching technologies, our thousands of delivery drivers, and our commitment to customer service, Bite Squad customers across all our markets will experience a better, faster, and more consistent service at a lower cost. We have already seen growth begin to take place in our new cities, and our technology continues to produce superior unit economics for food delivery.”
Founded in the summer of 2012 in Minneapolis, Bite Squad has partnered with local restaurants across more than 30 metropolitan areas, hand-picked a best-in-class customer support squad, and assembled a fleet of environmentally friendly vehicles to deliver fresh food from the restaurant straight to your door, quickly and hassle-free.
McDonald’s Spaplications Program Returns
McDonald’s modern approach to recruiting – Snaplications – is back. For Millennial job seekers, this is good news since according to a recent survey conducted by Wakefield Research on behalf of McDonald’s, 67 percent of Millennials will look for a seasonal job. Knowing more than half of hires at company-owned restaurants are under 24 years old, McDonald’s utilizes Snapchat as a recruitment tool to meet potential job seekers where they are – their phones. ‘Snaplications,’ a term coined by McDonald’s, is a first-to-market hiring tool in the U.S. that allows job seekers to be served an ad and opportunity to begin the application process for a job at a McDonald’s restaurant through the Snapchat app. Snaplications run through November 28.
“We saw significant engagement with Snaplications in the summer, and we’re excited to bring it back knowing young job seekers are on the job hunt again.” said Juan Marcos, chief people officer, McDonald’s USA. “McDonald’s and its independent franchisees are committed to being America’s best first job by providing flexible schedules, professional skills, and education. A part of that commitment also includes delivering easy and enjoyable ways for potential crew members to join the restaurant teams.”   While only three percent of U.S. recruiters are using Snapchat, McDonald’s approach with Snapchat paid off during the summer hiring period. The company saw a 35 percent increase in application flow and a 30 percent traffic increase to the careers page due to the combined efforts of Snaplications and the larger marketing campaign.   While many will use extra money from a seasonal job to buy someone a gift or treat themselves, others are looking to learn new skills they can take with them to another job, according to the McDonald’s survey – such as people skills (37 percent), patience and customer service (31 percent), time management (23 percent) and quick math (10 percent).   “These transferable skills are a staple at McDonald’s restaurants and set people up for success, whether they stay with the brand or further their careers elsewhere,” Marcos added.   McDonald’s and its independent franchisees strive to offer a work environment that sets people up for success at their McDonald’s and beyond …with education programs such as Archways to Opportunity®, which gives eligible employees in participating restaurants an opportunity to earn a high school diploma, receive upfront tuition assistance for college courses, access academic advising courses, and learn English as a second language.

Russo’s Restaurants, which includes Russo’s New York Pizzeria as well as Russo’s Coal-Fired Italian Kitchen, recently appointed award-winning Vincenzo “Enzo” Lavecchia, top photo, as corporate chef, where he will lead menu expansion, staff development and more. The new corporate chef will spend time at every Russo’s Restaurants location training managers on proper food preparation and culinary techniques. A native of Italy, Lavecchia will ensure each Italian-inspired dish is as authentic as possible by passing his skills and knowledge on to each location’s kitchen team.
“When I was growing up, the most popular room in the house was the kitchen,” said Lavecchia. “I feel very lucky to be making a living doing something I love. Being able to share my experiences and skills with other talented chefs has always been a dream of mine, so I can’t wait to bring my experiences and authentic Italian cooking to Texas and beyond.”
A two-time world champion pizza maker and a three-time United Arab Emirates pizza champion, Lavecchia is no stranger to the kitchen. His strong background in the culinary industry includes more than six years experience working as a head chef at Eataly and Ronda Locatelli in Dubai. Lavecchia piqued his culinary interest at a young age at home in Italy, where he grew up learning how to create a wide variety of Italian dishes. While attending Armando Perotti catering school, he learned the importance of adding a signature twist to dishes without compromising authenticity.
“This was an incredibly important decision and we couldn’t have made a more solid choice for the role of corporate chef,” said Chef Anthony Russo, owner and CEO of Russo’s Restaurants. “We wanted someone with both a strong culinary background and a lifelong passion for cooking – Enzo gives us that and more.”
Russo’s Restaurants is a 47-location national and international franchisor of the fast casual and casual dining brands Russo’s New York Pizzeria and Russo’s Coal-Fired Italian Kitchen. Based in Houston, Russo’s Restaurants is composed of a mix of corporate and franchised locations across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Florida and Hawaii. Russo’s has entered international markets as well, with locations in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, in the United Arab Emirates. There are an additional 30-plus units in development both in the United States and internationally.

Getting Unstuck, Writers’ thoughts on writer’s block. Illustration by Caitlin Hazell, Article originally published on Rookie
Fran Lebowitz
(From an interview on Bullseye With Jesse Thorn)
I have only one fear in life, and that is of writing.
Up until the point that I got my first actual writing job, I loved to write. I wrote all the time when I was a kid, and when I was a teenager. But the second I got my first $10 writing assignment from a tiny, tiny newspaper, suddenly I hated to write. Part of it is that I just hate work. I am by nature a sloth—I am really lazy, and I really don’t like to work. I have never had any work that I’ve enjoyed.
I’ve spent most of my life reading, and I have probably never read without feeling guilty. I always feel that I’m supposed to be doing something else—and I always am supposed to be doing something else. When I was a kid, I was supposed to be doing homework; as an adult, I’m supposed to be writing. If I tell myself, “Fran, you have to write,” I will not do it. I am so resistant to authority that I am resistant to my own authority.
Writer’s block is painful. There are painful things in our lives that we don’t seem to be able to fix. Things that you know the origin of, you have a high chance of fixing. Obviously, if I knew exactly what this was, I would fix it. I do not know what it is, exactly. I have my theories, but I don’t really know. However, I do not believe that I will never write again. And since no one would ever accuse me of being a cockeyed optimist, probably I will.
Joss Whedon
I wasn’t sure how to start this, so I did anyway. I’ve faced plenty of writer’s block in my time, though maybe less than some. I’ll lay out whatever rules for dealing with it that come to me. I think I’ve already laid out the first.
Control your environment. No one comes or goes. You’re alone, with enough time not only to write but to fall into the place of writing, which can take a while. No internet, no phone. Play music. It can amp the mood and separate you from the people on the other side of the door. (I listen to movie scores when I write. Nothing with lyrics—too distracting. Modern movie scores are very drone-y, in a good way for writers. Just sustained emotion. Hans Zimmer, Rachel Portman, Carter Burwell, Mychael Danna…there’s tons.) Make sure your desk faces the right way. (I have to face the room, not the wall.) Not too much clutter…it all matters.
Start writing. You can overthink anything. You can wind yourself up into a frenzy of inertia by letting a blank page stay blank. Write something on it. (Don’t draw something on it. The moment I doodle on a page I know nothing else will ever go on it. The blank page is scary, but it’s also sacred. Don’t mar it.) Anything can be rewritten—except nothing.
Be specific. You want to write something. Why? What exactly are you going for? Whether you’re at the beginning or the middle or the last damn sentence of something, you need to know exactly what you’re after. Verisimilitude? Laughter? Pain? Something that rhymes with orange? Whatever it is, be very cold about being able to break it down, so even if you walk away, you walk away with a goal.
Stop writing. Know when to walk away, when you’re grinding gears. This is tricky, because it’s easy to get lazy, but sometimes straining for inspiration when it’s not there is just going to tire you out and make the next session equally unproductive. I believe that Stephen King once likened it to kissing a corpse. But then, he would. Walk away, relax, and best of all…
Watch something. Watch, read, listen—it fills the creative tanks, reminds us why we wanted to write in the first place, and often, it’ll unlock the thing that’s missing. That doesn’t mean you’ll see something and subconsciously steal from it (though it doesn’t 100% NOT mean that), it just taps into the creative place a blocked writer can’t access. Very often I’ll see a movie that’ll completely inform what I’m writing, which will bear no resemblance of any kind to that movie. I’ll just know how I want to feel when I’m writing it. (Episode 10 of season three of Buffy: totes indebted to The Last Temptation of Christ.)
Have a deadline. I would probably never get anything written if it weren’t shooting next week. I’m a terrible procrastinator, which means the adrenaline of last-minute panic is my friend. (It’s all that kept me afloat in school, I’m sad to say. My attention has a disorderly deficit. There was no acronym for that when I was little.) But you can create deadlines of your own. Friends are good for this. Make yourself mutually accountable—you have to deliver such-and-many words by this-or-then time, as do they. You might not always (or ever) hold to these, but they can help you remember that your writing may matter to someone besides yourself.
Have rewards. I’m talking about cookies. Actually, I’m finishing with cookies. What matters more? Earn them, then enjoy them.
Malcolm Gladwell
I deal with writer’s block by lowering my expectations. I think the trouble starts when you sit down to write and imagine that you will achieve something magical and magnificent—and when you don’t, panic sets in. The solution is never to sit down and imagine that you will achieve something magical and magnificent. I write a little bit, almost every day, and if it results in two or three or (on a good day) four good paragraphs, I consider myself a lucky man. Never try to be the hare. All hail the tortoise.
Susan Orlean
1. If you think you are suffering from writer’s block, stop writing immediately.
2. Walk away from your computer.
3. Remember this: writer’s block doesn’t exist. What does exist is a condition in which you don’t really know what you’re trying to say, and therefore are having trouble saying it.
4. Don’t try to think of what you’re trying to say—yet. Go do something other than writing or thinking, preferably something where you’ll sweat (running, weeding the garden, walking the dog) or be pleasantly distracted (cooking, going for a drive).
5. When you’re done with that diversion, start thinking about what you still need to learn before you know what you’re trying to say. Don’t start writing yet.
6. Usually this will require making some phone calls, or doing some research. DON’T START WRITING YET.
7. Once you’ve done that additional research and thinking, start composing in your head the idea that got you stuck.
8. Find someone whose opinion you trust. Explain to her what you are writing. Listen to yourself as you’re talking. You’ll be sorting out your thoughts as you’re talking.
9. NOW sit down and try writing that down. If you’re still stuck, maybe you still don’t know what you’re trying to say. Repeat steps 1 through 9. If necessary repeat again. And again.
10. Celebrate getting past a hard part of your writing!
Adrian Tomine
The worst case of writer’s block I’ve ever experienced struck when I was 14, before I’d actually written anything. I knew that I wanted to be a cartoonist more than anything, but thanks to a childhood spent reading superhero comics and science fiction novels, I’d gotten it in my head that you needed not only an idea, but also a plot and even an entire fictional “universe” before you even started, so instead of actually writing or drawing, I sat around wishing I was writing or drawing. And when I did eventually stumble upon what I thought was a suitable idea (e.g., Elric of Melniboné mixed with Neuromancer, only it’s set in an alternate, futuristic version of the 1950s, and all the characters are robots…or are they?), it was so ambitious and convoluted that I would get frustrated and give up before I had completed a single page.
Fortunately, I soon discovered comics by people like Chester Brown, Harvey Pekar, Julie Doucet, Seth, and Joe Matt—people who made comics about themselves, about everyday life. At first I was like, “You can’t just do a story about waking up and making a can of soup for breakfast!” But then I’d find myself thinking about that story for a long time after I’d read it, and going back to those comics and rereading them, trying to figure out what made them so compelling. I wasn’t smart enough to work up any big theories about the true nature of art or anything like that, but I did feel, admittedly arrogantly, that if they could do stories like that, so could I.
I felt like I’d been trapped behind a massive roadblock for years, and suddenly I was able to just hop right over it. I could write and draw about anything, even the most mundane occurrence in my generally mundane teenage life. The ideas had been there all along, I just didn’t realize that they counted.
Then, of course, I was faced with the realization that making comics was about so much more than just coming up with an idea or a story. Contrary to what I’d believed when I was sitting around endlessly brainstorming (“I’m an amazing cartoonist…all I need is an idea!”), I was terrible. It was obvious that I had a lot of practice and learning ahead of me. But I was actually, finally, writing and drawing; and I was surprised to discover that once I started making comics, those elusive ideas came to me with much greater ease than when I was sitting there staring at a blank sheet of paper. They weren’t high-concept blockbuster ideas, but they were stories I was eager to tell, and that’s a great feeling.
Julie Klausner
Writer’s block is hardly ever a symptom of having nothing to say. It’s usually just your dumb lizard brain beating yourself up because you’re afraid of (in this order, at least for me):
1. Discomfort/ boredom 2. Not knowing exactly what it is you want to say yet 3. Failure
If you can push through the squirminess and clock the hours at the computer like you’re doing brain cardio, puking out whatever it is you MIGHT want to say in a fixed period of time, you’ll be OK. Because once you get ANYTHING on the page, you’ll be able to return to it later and make it better. If you leave and you have nothing, you’re not being very nice to your present OR future self.
The good news is that, even if you’re judging yourself while you barf out that crappy rough draft, what you write is usually not as bad as you think it is! Just make sure you sit on it for a little bit of time before returning to it and editing the shit out of it. It’s always easier to shape something from something than to make something from nothing. So try as hard as you can to blurt something out, even for 10 minutes, and know that once you’re done, the hardest part is behind you.
Writer’s block isn’t magically ordained, or sent down as a decree from God or whatever. It’s not external—you’re the only one doing the blocking! So please try to be gentle to yourself. Being hard on yourself is the #1 cause of misery and wasted time and keeping yourself back. I’ve never heard of anybody who’s bullied themselves into being more prolific or successful.
Give yourself the gift of letting yourself put something down that isn’t perfect. You will return to it later and make it wonderful.
Vanessa Davis
The hardest thing for me has always been the beginning of a project—just getting started.
I went to painting school, and I learned all about how to stretch canvases in all of the olden-times ways, with hand-made stretchers and millions of layers of rabbit glue and sanding (so much sanding). All of this fussy craftsmanship shit. I’d think about painting, but the idea that everything had to be perfect and gorgeous and “right” had been drilled into my brain, and I wouldn’t even be able to start. Any ideas I’d have would immediately be second-guessed (by me) and would evaporate.
After college I decided to make comics, but at first I didn’t really know “how” to make comics. I’d never thought of myself as writer—I didn’t know how to structure a story. I didn’t know how to plan out my pages. I didn’t know how to draw my characters.
I thought back to a painting teacher I had when I was 16, who did one tiny painting a day, just as a way to always have something going. Like a diary. When our class visited his studio, he had thousands of paintings on his wall—the last five years of his life displayed all at once. It was so moving, so cool. I decided to do something in my sketchbook every day. I told myself I wouldn’t to show it to anyone. It could be big or small, a cop-out or an ambitious project.
There’s always something that happens in a day, something worth remembering or noticing. Putting those moments together started to form a story, without my even trying to write one. It was reassuring, but also humbling—it meant that I didn’t always have control over everything I made. And you don’t, either. Sometimes what makes something good is something you improvised, or something you weren’t even conscious you were doing, or something you thought was a bad idea. If you go into a project demanding perfection, you’ll never have a chance to be pleasantly surprised by those lucky “accidents.” But if you leave yourself room to figure things out as you go, you’ll not only have an easier time starting a book/poem/article/diary entry/whatever; you might also end up with a better end product.
I did eventually show people my sketchbook, and those sketches became my first graphic novel, Spaniel Rage. Since then, my process has changed—I found that I do like to do some pre-planning now. But when I just don’t know where to start, I stop and look around, and write and draw whatever I see around me, whatever I’m thinking about. It’s my start button. You can find yours, too.
(Also, I have put a waterproof notepad in my shower. All those good ideas you get in the bathroom go right down the drain if you don’t write them down!)
Jenny Zhang
I have been telling stories and making up nonsense words for as long as I can remember. But around the time I started high school, I started to realize that for me, writing wasn’t just a hobby. It was my freaking life. I knew I wanted to write and not just wanted to write but wanted other people to read what I wrote and not just wanted other people to read what I wrote but wanted other people to read what I wrote and like it and not just wanted other people to like my writing but wanted other people to read it and like it and be transformed by it.
Do you see how if you go down that path you will (a) seem full of yourself and (b) scare yourself into doing nothing by placing outrageous expectations on your writing? So let’s you and I take a step back, and try to remember a time when an afternoon of writing was something to look forward to, not something that caused us crippling anxiety and agony. Here are some tips to get you there:
The internet is not your friend. The internet wants you to do excessive online browsing. The internet wants you to scroll through Tumblr until your wrists hurt. The internet wants you to read other people’s writing. The internet wants you to have 30 tabs up at once that you can’t possibly close until you’ve read every single link from the Wikipedia page on zombies. You have to peel yourself away from the internet.
You could do what Miranda July does here, or you could download an app like Freedom or Self-Control, both of which block you from going online for whatever amount of time you specify. I personally prefer Self-Control, because even if you restart your computer, you still can’t get online as long as you are under the time limit you’ve set for yourself. Also, the app allows you a “whitelist”—a small number of websites, pre-ordained by you, that you can still access. I like to keep one tab open for Dictionary.com and one for Poetry.org, so I can look up words and poems as little breaks between writing bouts.
Give yourself small assignments and projects. I’m the first one to resist any kind of writing exercise because I’m all like, I am far too complex to submit to a lowly writing exercise. I will come up with my own inspiration, thank you very much. And then I go online shopping and spend three hours finding 45 items to add to my shopping cart until I have the equivalent of a down payment for a house in the ol’ cart. So, no, I am not too far advanced, and, yes, I do need a kick in the ass sometimes. So kick yourself. Tell yourself that whenever you get a paper receipt from a store, you will, by the end of the day, write a poem on the back of that receipt, or the first few sentences of a short story.
Take an old book that you don’t care about and a black Sharpie and make an erasure poem, which is where you delete entire chunks of text to create a new poem. It’s way more satisfying to do it to an actual, physical book, but if all of your books are precious, you can check out Wave Books’ online portal for creating erasure poems here.
Keep a notebook at your bedside, and every morning write down whatever you remember of your dreams the night before. If you don’t remember your dreams, make them up. Dream up your dreams.
Go to a café and eavesdrop on other people’s conversations. Write down what you hear, then go back over it and scramble it up, take stuff out, add what you want, and turn it into an absurdist play.
If the physical act of typing or using a pen on paper is somehow a block for you, get a recorder and record yourself telling a story. Transcribe it the next day.
Be curious about other people. You know who has a million and one stories to tell? Your parents. Your grandparents. Your weird uncle. Your weird aunt. These are people who have lived through a lot of shit, and what’s more, they know other people who have lived through a lot of shit. Yes, some of the stories are boring, and some are about how cute you were when you peed yourself at the movies, but there are also amazing, incredibly sad, and incredibly hilarious stories to be uncovered. Gabriel García Márquez’s inspiration for One Hundred Years of Solitude was just sitting around his kitchen table listening to the women in his family gossip. He turned that gossip into gold. You can too.
Read, like all the freaking time. I meet young writers all the time who don’t read, and I’m always like, “What are you doing? Stop writing so much! Read more!” Be a better reader before you start worrying about being a good writer. Reading George Saunders in college inspired me to write better short stories; reading Kafka and Babel and Gogol and Kharms inspired me to write with more imagination. Reading Chelsey Minnis in grad school got me writing poetry again. Ariana Reines’s first book, The Cow, encouraged me to keep writing poetry and eventually to emerge from my writing hole with my own book of poems. Read other writers. Develop your tastes as a reader and eventually, just as Ira Glass says in this video, your writing abilities will catch up to your high standards as a reader.
Dreaming counts! We’re all told that we’re supposed to be “productive.” There’s a glut of things to know about, memes to forward, hashtags to create, instagram photos to take, etc., etc., etc. There’s not a lot of time in our lives to dream. But being a writer is saying that you want to see beauty in places that other people often overlook. So give yourself a day or a week off, or even a few months off, to daydream. But don’t let your brain get comfortable. Make it spin. Give it time to gather strength from ideas.
A lot of writers swear by routine, but I swear by chaos. There’s enough fucking routine in my life. Every day I have to brush my teeth. Every day I have to smile at strangers. Every day I have to worry about money. Every day I want something I can’t have. Every day I find some way to go on! I know that writing every day for an hour would help me tremendously with writer’s block, but I also know that I need an element of wildness in my writing. I need to know that writing is something I do because it sets me free. It makes me feel golden with confidence. It gives me the gift of gab. I feel like a god. I feel like an entertainer. So write when you damn well please.
No one is going to die if you don’t write. The world will find a way to go on. But you might find your soul shrinking the longer you go without writing. The thing about writer’s block is that sometimes it’s real, and sometimes it’s just your brain taunting you: What if you’re not a good writer? What if once you put the words down on the page, it becomes evident that they are not so brilliant after all? And then there’s the fear that if you do write the most perfect story or poem in the whole world, will that mean you won’t ever have another good idea? What if you run out of ideas? Well, then you…
GO OUT AND LIVE YOUR LIFE, BECAUSE AS LONG AS YOU DO THAT YOU WILL NEVER RUN OUT THINGS TO SAY. The best way to avoid living your life, as a writer, is to spend your time worrying about writer’s block. So, live your life for a while. Your talent and your instincts as a storyteller won’t die, I promise. And then when you’re ready, hole the eff up, and write, write, write.
Etgar Keret
“Writer’s block” is a term invented by very spoiled and whiny writers to refer to periods in which they do not feel inspired. The assumption hidden behind this term is that creativity is an everlasting, full-powered fountain, so that if at any given moment we wish to write but nothing exceptional comes out at the other end of our keyboard or pen, there must be some malfunction obstructing the natural cycle of everlasting creativity.
I’d like to offer an alternative perspective. Creativity, very much like love, is a gift. And you don’t get to get gifts all the time. If you go on a date and you don’t like the guy or girl you are meeting, you are not experiencing “lover’s block”—you simply don’t love at that moment, and if you’re patient enough you’ll experience love in the future (probably in the place and the time you’d least expect it). If you don’t write well, keep writing bad stuff (don’t worry, bad writing is completely ecological—it doesn’t damage the ozone layer or give you cancer). If it gets too frustrating, stop doing it—move on to badminton, collect airplane models, or do all those other things that people who don’t write do. But mostly, wait patiently. (Patiently as opposed to impatiently, or angrily, or bitterly—because those kinds of waiting don’t breed future good writing. Patience does.)
Writing isn’t a habit. It’s a unique form of expression. And nobody owes you that special experience on a daily or a weekly basis. But if you make an effort, when it’s gone, to keep living your life and experiencing new things, it will eventually return. And when it does, enjoy it as much as you can, before it goes away again.
Ayelet Waldman
I had writer’s block today. Here’s what it looked like:
I woke up late and sluggish, a result of having spent last night watching a six-episode marathon of Say Yes to the Dress. Too logy to work, I lingered over my oatmeal and tea, reading the New York Times on my phone despite the fact that the actual paper paper was lying on the kitchen table, next to the sugar bowl. Convinced that I would never be able to focus on work without a dose of endorphins, I headed to the gym. An hour later, I was far too physically exhausted to even contemplate opening my computer, let alone work. Ever the taskmaster, I forced myself to it—and spent an hour pinning wool blankets and linen throw pillows to my Pinterest wall.
Then I was hungry. So I ate lunch. Afterwards, I considered what a challenge it is to concentrate on a full stomach, but I forced myself back to the computer. Isn’t it remarkable how an hour of web surfing passes in the blink of an eye? Before I knew it, it was time to pick up the kids.
Another day lost to the torment of writer’s block. Right?
No. Wrong. There is no such thing as writer’s block. There is only procrastination, and laziness. Had I just turned on Freedom and sat the hell down, I could have written at least 1,000 words today. They may not have been good words. In fact, they probably would have sucked. But that’s not the point. The point is not to produce lyrical perfection—that’s what rewriting is for. The point is to sit your ass in your chair and write, even if all you write is a paragraph about what a lazy cretin you are.
Writer’s block is a myth. Get to work.
