Speculate (#7) - FFXIV Write 2021
Tumblr media
Length: 1,024 words
Warnings: None
Time Period: Post-A Realm Reborn
Character(s):
Tumblr media
The free company house was reaching the end of its “stirring” period as the members slowly woke up one by one, heading downstairs to the kitchen to eat the recommendation (requirement to some) of a large, healthy breakfast.
Red was the first awake as always, already cooking a hearty meal for her team over a hot stove. Revera woke up next, coming down to the kitchen to do her usual morning stretches; despite being able to do them anywhere, she would consistently choose a common area for companionship. Sometime later, Nylos awoke with a scraggly Ura yawning and trailing behind them. It had become routine for them to drag her from her room, regardless of if she’d slept or not, because they believed eating Red’s food was the start to a good day.
“Good morning!” The Roe cheerily greeted as she brought a spatula to the pan in her hand.
Ura simply groaned in response.
“G-g-good moooooooorning, Red. Herring. Red Herring.” Nylos froze in place.
Revera instantly got up from the stretching she’d been doing on the floor and squinted suspiciously at her Midlander friend. Their face was beet red as they averted their gaze from her, sweat trickling down from their nervously pinched brow.
“I’m almost done! Take a seat,” Red cheerily continued like nothing was strange about, well, anything.
Ura pulled a chair from the table and sat down with an extraordinarily loud yawn, failing to notice in her several days without sleep the way that her friends were behaving. Nylos made an strangely wide arc around Revera, very clearly avoiding her scrutinizing gaze as they sat across from the sleepy Miqo’te.
Without taking her eyes off of the small White Mage, Revera approached the table as well. “Say, Red, you seem awfully chipper this morning. Something good happen last night?” She smirked as she watched fear take over Nylos’ face, their jaw dropped, uncertain what their Paladin friend might say.
“Huh? O-oh,” she became unusually uncomfortable, and Revera instantly felt like she’d won. “Uh, well, last night at the beach was fun, don’t you think?”
“Sure, if you can look past the usual Ura antics,” the Viera grumbled.
“My what? The fuck are ‘ant-icks’?” Ura suddenly started paying attention, flicking out whatever she’d dug out of her ear.
“Ura, language!” Nylos cried out, forever remorseful that anyone let her learn such a word.
Red approached with four plates, two on either arm, carried with perfect balance as she delivered her home-cooked meals to her friends. “Eat up!” She said with a satisfied grin. She sat down beside them and began chowing down, unconcerned about the tense atmosphere developing between the Dragoon and the White Mage.
The group ate quietly for the most part, aside from the loud chewing on behalf of the Keeper of the Moon. Nylos took small bites as always, but ate much slower with Revera refusing to take her eyes off of them. They reached for a drink, took a big gulp, and set their cup back down, pausing for a long moment as they considered what they were about to say very, very carefully.
“Um… I have a sort of announcement to make,” they kept their attention on the half-finished plate in front of them as Revera continued staring at them, Red looked up at them as she chewed, and Ura proceeded to eat uninterrupted. They met eyes with Red, silently communicating something between them as though they were getting confirmation that what they were about to say would be alright with her. “Um… R-Red… Herring. Red Herring and I… um… we… we’ve started… um… dating.”
By the time they finished what they were saying, their face was completely consumed by blush, and Red’s cheeks were mildly flushed as well. They couldn’t help but smile at each other.
“Oh, finally,” Revera sighed, shrugging her shoulders. “I thought you two would never confess! That’s a relief,” she smacked Nylos’ shoulder, causing them to lurch forward.
“Wh-wh-what?” They couldn’t hide their panicked tone as they searched her face for the answers, but all she offered was a thrilled, toothy grin.
“What’s ‘dating’?” Ura asked with full mouth, tearing into the eggs Red had so lovingly scrambled just for her.
“It’s something people do before they get married,” Revera mischievously answered, watching with smug joy as Red choked a bit on her food and Nylos nearly spit out their drink.
“Oh.” The Miqo suddenly stopped eating, her gaze becoming distant.
Red stood up, grabbing her empty plate as she headed back to the kitchen to put together the rest of the food for their other teammates who typically liked to eat in their rooms.
“Sorry for teasing you two,” the Rava stifled a laugh. “It’s just that everyone’s known you’ve been into each other for like, ages now. We really thought you’d either never figure it out or never admit it.” She took a big gulp of her drink. “Oh, man! This means I won the bet! Haha! Ryuko’s gonna be pissed!”
“You… made a bet?” Nylos appeared like their soul was leaving their body as Red walked by them with a couple plates in her hands, kissing the top of their head to restore them before she headed upstairs.
“Yep! Alright, I’ll be going out for a jog now. See ya later Ny, give Red a big smooch for me!” Revera got up quickly and bolted up the stairs, not needing to look at their face to know it was likely burning with embarrassment.
The room became relatively quiet as things settled down. Nylos shook their head, trying to shake off the excitement from before, when they noticed Ura was just sitting there, staring at her plate.
“Ura? Is everything okay?”
“Is that why my wife left me?” She spoke in a near zombie-like tone. “Because we didn’t do dating?”
“What?”
She shuddered and suddenly stood up, running towards and up the stairs in a flash. Nylos was left there, stunned and confused. They had to shake that off, too. They resolved to help clean up, and they couldn’t help but smile as reality set in.
I’m dating Red.

Avatar (#6) - FFXIV Write 2021

It was a relatively uneventful day for the Drowning Wench when divinity herself stepped off of the elevator. Hands on her hips and dressed like she had just come from a battle the world had never seen, she scanned the room with her brows furrowed.
She determined the exit quickly enough and began walking toward it when a loud voice suddenly startled her.
“Hup bup bup! Hey, you! Is that a… freakishly glowing axe I see on your back? Are you an adventurer?” The man standing behind the counter a decent distance away beckoned for her to approach.
Her ears laid back as she reluctantly walked toward the man, her arms folded to express her distaste.
“Who are ye?” He perked an eyebrow as he looked her up and down, mildly intimidated by her intense-looking gear.
“Thou dare ask?” She growled, finally looking at him straight in the face. “Bow, mortal! Thou art standing in the presence of a god!”
They stared at each other for a long, long time.
Like, a really long time.
He did not bow.
“...Uh. Huh. Yer not the first lass comin’ around here spoutin’ that nonsense. Talkin’ about bein’ a goddess and all that.” He rubbed his chin as he continued examining her. “Yea, actually, she was a mooncat much like yerself. Do ye know each other?”
“Another divine?” She perked up, clearly intrigued. “And here I thought this land of mortals wouldst be disappointingly dull.”
“Yea yea,” he began searching through the papers he had on the desk in front of him. “She registered as an adventurer with miss Momodi but I got the misfortune of meetin’ ‘er. Lessee… here it is, Ura Ailuro.”
The fiery-haired Miqo squinted. “Ailuro? Her name is cat? Perhaps this being thee speak of is an unknown god of… cats.”
“Whahuh? Yea, sure, whatever. Either way, I can’t let ye go anywhere with a weapon like that ‘til you register with the adventurer’s guild or tell me who’s responsible for ye.”
“I am responsible for myself, mortal.”
He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “Ooookay, what’d be yer purpose for visitin’ Limsa Lominsa today?”
“If’t were up to me, I would not be wasting mine time here.”
He blinked at her. She wasn’t giving him much to work with. “Do ye wanna sign up for adventurin’?”
“Wouldst it permit me to leave this dastardly establishment?”
“Sure would.”
“So be it.”
He felt relief as he grabbed his pen. “Alroight, great! Now, what’s yer name?”
She clicked her tongue. “If thee must know, I am Ego, daughter of the great and wonderful goddess Azeyma.”
He blinked at her and then stifled a laugh. “Ego, huh? It suits ye. So that’s Azeyma for yer last name, then?”
“Divinity has no need for surnames.”
“Ego Azeyma it is,” he scribbled down her name, double checking to make sure he spelled it right. When he looked back up at her, her appearance had notably changed. “What- uh, how’d ye do that?”
“Do what mortal?”
He pointed at her, unsure where exactly he should. He focused on her weapon, “ye changed yer attire real quick, n’ that glowin’ axe looks all plain now.”
“WHAT?!” She quickly removed her axe from her back, only confirming what she’d been told. It forced her to look herself up and down. It was undeniable: she was suddenly wearing the normal, low-level clothes of a brand new Miqo’te adventurer.
“Impressive I reckon,” he leaned over the counter, trying to see if her armor was simply on the ground, but all he saw was her plain boots. “Though ye woulda had an easier time in that other stuff, it looked pretty strong.”
She turned her back to him, her body trembling with pure rage. She suddenly shot her fist up into the air, clutching her pathetically regular axe. “MUST THOU TAKETH EVERYTHING FROM ME?!”
She stood there, glaring at the ceiling (though presumably that was not the target of her anger) for some time, her axe still lifted to the heavens in her shaky hand. After whoever she was yelling at failed to respond, she pointed the axe at the man behind the counter.
“Where is the one you call Ailuro?”
He was sitting with his head relaxed in one hand, and it was clear there was a bit of annoyance on his face. “Oh, Ura? She’s been busy, I know that much. Hmm… I think she’s been hangin’ around the scions as of late, mayhaps she’s even joined ‘em. Ye’d have the best luck lookin’ among that crowd.”
“Very well.” She turned and began heading toward the exit she’d wanted to leave through so long ago, back when she still felt powerful.
“Hey! Yer gonna wanna help out the people of Limsa n’ get yerself some gear n’ gil, what ye got on now ain’t gonna protect ye much!”
The end of her tail became bushy as she hissed. “Very well,” she seethed through her teeth.
He watched her until she disappeared, and finally he sighed. “Adventurin’ sure attracts the weirdos.” He picked up a glass and began cleaning it, shaking his head for the rest of the night.
