What is the relationship between two characters like and who's someone that comes and shakes that up?
OR! Alternatively (since I just had one I cant talk about yet) what's a big character or story breakthrough you've had recently? :0
Okay, since I'm working on revisions of my book EOTA today, I've got that story on the brain and I'm absolutely gonna talk about Kirsen!!! Specifically the relationship between Kirsen and Imogen, which gets touched on over a couple different chapters, but ultimately just can't be explored in-depth during the book itself. Also......this is gonna get long, fair warning AKDHDKFJDK
So, to start it all off: At the start of EOTA, it's only been a handful of months since Kirsen and Imogen ended their 1-2yr relationship. I think in the original draft I put a hard number on it, something like 6 months since they broke up? But I think it'll read better if I leave the period more up to interruptation. Anyways, the point is that Kirsen is someone who grows very, very attached to people and things are left unresolved.
Because it says from the get-go, from the very moment their past relationship is mentioned, that Kirsen and Imogen didn't break up because they stopped loving one another. In fact, they still have very strong feelings for one another. It's just that they recognized that they simply couldn't provide what the other needed and deserved in a relationship.
Imogen's aging mother is essentially the person in charge of their town, Pointes. She runs everything and keeps the town safe and functional. While she could have chosen anyone to take her place, she raised Imogen with the idea that she was going to inherit the position. This is the culmination of her entire life so far and really, Imogen does very much want the position.
Kirsen is someone who...well, there's several parts of her personality that come together in an unfortunate way. She was raised with a hunter's disposition; she needs to be out, she needs to be moving, she needs a job, she needs a prey. And unfortunately, Kirsen has a lot of trauma that she has been desperately trying to avoid acknowledging her entire life. If she stays in one place too long, she can't have a constant distraction, she can't hide her bad days from the people there, and she risks people trying to force her to acknowledge it.
Imogen needs a partner who will be there by her side, who will be the support she needs while she takes on a very taxing, pivotal role. Kirsen needs a partner who will be willing to travel with her, who will recognize her need to run and be there to pick up the pieces when everything does catch up to them. And no matter how hard they try, they are both intimately aware that they cannot provide those things for one another.
Ultimately, I think they both recognize this and yet cling to the hope that something in their lives will change and, magically, all of their differences will disappear and they will be able to live together happily.
[Enter Lucida] :)
Kirsen is now having to work with Lucida to save the world. It provides a great distraction from her struggles with Imogen- except that Kirsen thinks Lucida is attractive and falling for the person you're going on a perilous quest with is not exactly the brightest move. So now she's juggling feelings for two different people and knowing fully well that neither situation is ideal for her currently.
And there are specific scenes where Kirsen is clearly leaning into her attraction to Lucida so she can forget about Imogen, only to then have specific scenes where she (for instance) makes out with Imogen bc "surely this will absolutely help me not fall for Lucida and have no emotional repercussions at all".
Its- at the end of the day I think the three of them have such interesting dynamics with one another (and that's not even touching on Imogen/Lucida being weirdly passive aggressive and jealous of one another bc they both ALSO like Kirsen)and I can only scratch the surface of it in the book itself, bc technically the romance plays second fiddle to the Saving The World Shit ya know? I could write essays on these three idiots, I love them

so this technically isn't spoilers (bc lbr it's obvs Kirsen/Lucida end up together) but i wanna ramble about their future kids bc i love them
so first they adopt a pair of brothers, that appear in the beginning of the book and i can't recall their names at this moment, who don't exactly consider Kirs/Luce their parents but they do love them a lot and appreciate having a home for the last few years before they are adults and go out on their own
then, just before the boys leave home, Kirs and Luce end up rescuing and adopting an 8yo orphan named Seleale and she's their first kid who truly considers them her parents. she's a Seelie Fae and I haven't settled on her looks 100% but I do think she coincidentally looks a lot like Lucida. She also takes after Lucida a lot in personality and she learns all she knows about magic from her mama
and lastly, Kirsen ends up having twins that are Changelings like her! Her cousin Jashe suggests the names Sol and Lune and it sticks, Kirsen loves matchy names aksjdksls. The twins are enby and despite being related to Kirs, they don't actually talk much at all. Probably selectively mute? Anyways they're just as rough n tumble as Kirsen and they get into SO MUCH trouble despite rarely saying a word. Lucida and Seleale always watch on in bewilderment as the other three do crazy shit

3. How does their social personality differ from how they act when they’re alone?
Oh, Kirsen has quite possibly the biggest personality shift of any of my ocs. Around others, Kirsen is always bright, excitable and loud. She lives for making other people laugh or be happy. She says stupid things just to see how people will respond all the time
But on her own....Kirsen is incredibly depressed and has p severe PTSD. She has unhealthy coping mechanisms and no will to fight them off to help herself. It's common for her to avoid being alone at all costs bc she knows she'll regret the things she does to herself when she is alone
12. How do they show affection to someone they love?
Kirsen is so fucking affectionate it's unreal. Physically, verbally, you name it, she just loves to let others know she loves them. Hugs are a big one for her, as well as gift giving and just...chilling with those she cares about. If Kirsen loves you, you're absolutely gonna know that fact

2. What do strangers notice about them first?
Looks wise, it's absolutely the antlers. Not all Bone Elves have them, but rather random amounts of any bone or bark-like structures on them. Kirsen's happens to be one of the more immediately noticeable traits.
But if you take that out of the equation, it's her smile! She does so brightly and frequently and so long as you're not the world's biggest grump, her smiles are rather contagious.
5. Do they have a “tell” for when they’re lying?
Kirsen is very much an honest person who doesn't like lying to others unless she deems it necessary. It's easy to tell when she's lying bc she straight up looks very uncomfortable; fidgeting, shifting her feet, looking around rapidly. The only time this doesn't happen is when she genuinely dislikes the person she's lying to. No guilt makes for an easier lie, to Kirsen.
14. What attributes do they have that are inherited from their parents or shared with their siblings/other relatives?
Oh, Kirsen's got a lot, despite having very little family. P much just her dad and her uncle. But how boy let's start the list
From her dad, Kirsen gets her uncanny knack for anything related to using a bow. Her shot is very accurate and waiting for the perfect moment to shoot is actually the only time Kirsen is ever calm/not moving around. She gets...p much all his mental traits; a hunter's discipline, his fighting style, and her need to be working at all times.
From her uncle, Kirsen gets all of her personality and some of her looks! Her Uncle Simore has the same excitable, head-in-the-clouds, friend of the world personality. They have the same sense of humor too! Their eyes crinkle into the same shape when they laugh, they have round faces and wide noses. They might be the exact opposite in height and hair color, but you can take one look and know they're related.
15. Are their greatest flaw and their greatest strength related and in what way? (ie very caring and helpful but a doormat, or very observant and shrewd but often paranoid)
HOO BOY ARE THEY
Kirsen will help anyone and everyone that needs it on her travels. Part of it is the always needing to have a job, but she just genuinely has a bleeding heart and can't help but think everyone's problems are on her shoulders.
In this way, Kirsen has a lot of friends, but only when they need her. Kirsen has little self-worth when it comes to that and knows she is just a stepping stone for others growth and that she'll be left eventually. She'll work herself to the bone for a stranger and it will still always break her heart when they move on before her
