We Are Number 4 (Golden)

Out of all frequently occuring memes on the channel, its arguable that We Are Number One (typically shortened to "WANO") is one of the most perfectly refined on the channel. In my posts on Chillin’ Like A Villain and The expanse of meme in past was split, A fiendish trap has now been set; Behind a tree the villains sit, Terror of sport, the Robbie's Net., I elaborated on just how that quality has come to be: the people behind the original LazyTown song provided the public will full access to its original stems, which led to a huge uptick in quality. The bar of quality has become so high for WANO rips on SiIvaGunner to where each new one feels worthy of celebration, its always executed just so perfectly. Even with that, We Are Number 4 (Golden) sits with me as one of the most fun examples in the channel's history.

The concept is simple and immediately understandable - arranging Time To Make History from Persona 4 Golden into We Are Number One's silly ska-like musical style and instrumentation. Both songs are so infectiously gleeful and its a near perfect mesh from the get-go, but like a lot of my other favorite rips on the channel, the real sell comes in the details. Details of the original song are given flourishes that fit the context of a Persona game throughout its runtime, like replacing "Superhero" with "SuPERSONA", or the springy net-toss sound from the original being replaced by the sound of a character receiving lowered stats. It rounds the song out in such fun ways and almost makes it sound as if the Robbie Rotten party are actually in a Persona 4 dungeon fighting - which makes the idea of this being their battle theme even funnier.

That's of course not to say that its a rip sold purely on its details - the instrumentation's usage in replicating the original Time To Make History is simply perfect, and the slight pitch changes in Robbie's vocal performance work to still maintain the original song's tone. The song's climax in particular is immensely satisfying - Robbie's vocals gradually climb in pitch with deliberate pauses inbetween them specifically done to imitate the original song, and yet it doesn't come off as artificial in the slightest - its a damn seamless effort for being so noticeably different from the original vocal performance.

So: to Nutella French Toast, and to everyone else who keep the WANO spirit alive with rips all at this quality - you're absolute titans of the SiIvaGunner team and I personally cherish every single new WANO rip more than the last.

CrystalForce & NutellaFrenchToast – The Concept of Plastic Love

Sometimes, SiIvaGunner’s crack team of mashup artists goes beyond the memes and makes something that’s really good on its own. This one combines Hideki Naganuma’s The Concept of Love from Jet Set Radio Future, Mariya Takeuchi’s Plastic Love from YouTube recommendations, and a few other songs. This was made for the final round of SiIvaGunner’s King for Another Day Tournament, which DJ Professor K won. I keep coming back to this banger, so it’s good enough to post here!

Like the Legend of the Ho-Oh

One of my favorite trends of recent (Season 4-7) SiIva has been the occasional "remastering" of old rips, rips that for instance were made out of key due to the insane production cycle of Season 1 in particular or just due to inexperience. As part of these remastering efforts though, some rips get full-on reimagined in different sounds, a kind of extension of an in-joke that only listeners of the original rip would understand. One of the earliest and best examples of these is this rip - a remake of 【ｇｅｔ】 Lucky Channel/Game Corner by now-inactive contributor LR4. The original track sits among just a couple dozen rips to have ever passed one million YouTube views and is honestly kind of a landmark moment in Season 1, a true showcase of what the channel was capable of.

Like yesterday's rip, both this rip and its original version are on the surface not much more than simple mashups. Yet its the kind of mashup that draws people's attention so perfectly: Where all the pieces of the two tracks combined fit together so perfectly. "Get Lucky" mashed up with the beat of Pokémon's "lucky" channel music, the line "Like the legend of the phoenix" fitting the Johto Pokémon games like a glove, and Daft Punk's electronic style fitting the old-school DS and/or Game Boy sound perfectly.

What really elevates this rip above the rest in my eyes - particularly the remake - is that the Lucky Channel backing track is subtly altered to sync up and back the Get Lucky vocals perfectly, creating perfect harmony in the chorus while still managing to feel like its just a mashup, due to how authentic the modified sound still is. Upon closer listen it reminds you of just how far the SiIva team oft goes for a joke - its not always just two tracks smashed together, as both tracks are often modified just enough to make everything click.

Living up to the Season 1 original was a tall order, but all three contributors did an excellent job with this one.

Sweatpants Select

As with any human, I have my biases. There's things I like more than others, games I'm more drawn to than others, music I'm more drawn to than others. A huge part of that bias is formed by nostalgia - and as explained back in Neon Wi​-​Fi, there are few games that I am as nostalgic for in terms of sheer vibes and atmosphere, than Mario Kart Wii. The "Glass Ocean" aesthetic the whole game is coated in, the menues, the UI, the sheen and bloom of the visuals: the sleek, clean beauty of the future...there are few games where I will listen to every rip of them, but Mario Kart Wii sits atop of that list, because its aesthetic has just enamored me so much. I watched Sweatpants Select immediately when it was uploaded back in 2018 as a result, and with the rip now sitting at 400 thousand views, its amazing to see that its not just me who truly clicks with the game's beauty.

That's of course not to say that Sweatpants Select is only good because its using Mario Kart Wii music - its an incredible rip because NutellaFrenchToast went whole hog in realizing its concept to the fullest, in a way that feels shockingly modern for a rip from six years ago. Yes, this is a hip-hop/rap music mashup, "rip-hop", in a similar vein to Chance's Return to Dreamland and kirby will never have drip *spits out cereal*, but you can immediately tell what sets this rip in particular apart from the rest. The two tracks, Main Menu from Mario Kart Wii and Sweatpants by Childish Gambino, are interwoven with one another in such a cool way - Sweatpants' vocals are complimented not just by Main Menu's melody, but by the repeating sounds of Mario fireballs and shouts from Toad, replicating pieces from the original track's beat. That's cool as shit on its own, of course, even as someone who hasn't listened much to Childish Gambino (take a shot) outside of SiIva, its incredible just how this mashup with those simple additions turns a chill menu theme into an outright banger - but there's yet more to come.

Because yes, this rip does the silly little trick that ALWAYS works for me - ESCALATION. A very cool trait with Mario Kart Wii's menues was how the music was dynamic per each section, as it added instruments to the track when selecting your character, then added yet more when selecting the racetrack itself - and Sweatpants Select synchronizes this trait with Sweatpants' beat drop as the chorus begins. "Are you eatin' tho?" is said with the entire rest of the backing silent, then it all returns at once with the menu music changed to the character select variant. It hits like CRAZY - rips like Door into a Hundred Summers have shown how effective it can be to change the backing VGM to rips like this, but to change the beat to more-dense variants like this is just as sick without losing any of the cohesion.

As a cherry on top of it all, of course, there's the car-starting joke, beautifully preserved from Sweatpants. Paired with the 3-2-1-GO countdown of a Mario Kart Wii race, Gambino sings about vroom-vrooming in his Fisker car, but pauses the music - and the entire rip by extension, including the added start-race sounds - to explain that his car actually doesn't make sounds when it starts up. After the track has already elevated itself twice over with the changes in backing VGM, this is just the perfect touch on top, a sign of just how closely NutellaFrenchToast understood each of the pieces they were working with so thoroughly. That proficiency was of course never something I doubted - Like the Legend of the Ho-Oh and especially We Are Number 4 (Golden) paint them as someone who understands detail like nothing else. Only here, Sweatpants Select applies that same level of care to a track I'm forever emotionally tied to as a Mario Kart Wii fan - creating a banger that exceeds my expectations on every front.

Here in Ohio, we finally got our first decent snow of the winter. I really like snow as long as I'm not driving in it. For the moment, things are calm and pretty and not even that cold.

These are dire times. The USA became a dictatorship, China is sick, Hong Kong's autonomy is still threatened, Australia is still on fire, and climate change is inevitable. Let's rest and enjoy the snow before climate change takes it away from us. We should recover our strength so we can continue the fight for our future.
