The teens spend some time resting and recovering at the Oak-Swallows-Garcia household.

It's been days, and Taylor hasn't said a word.

“How—how are you guys? I—I—I’m… I’m—I’m not fine… but—but I’m… just…”

Normal sucks in a breath and swipes at his tears. Sparrow squeezes his shoulder. There’s fresh burn scars scattered across his body, but his eyes are open, and he’s breathing, and he’s alive, and stable—physically anyway—and that’s really all she could ask for. It’s been days. She doesn’t know how many. She doesn’t think anyone does. Lark isn’t happy, and neither is she. The kids need to rest.

And one of them is dead .

A backyard burial without their own parents. Lark thought it was unnecessary and that they were just losing time. Sparrow thinks he’s the only one who didn’t cry.

“I’m, uh… I guess I’m okay, Norm,” Scary answers, still holding his hand like it's his last lifeline. Sparrow isn’t sure she’s let go at all, or if she ever will.

Her voice is shaking like her hands, and her eyes are wide. No tears now, but her face is red from the way there were earlier.

She spares a quick glance to Link before bringing her gaze back to Normal, and then to the Doodler— Dood , lying in Normal’s lap. Asleep? Can it sleep?

She’s been pressed up against Normal nonstop, leaning on him, laying on him, like an eldritch weighted blanket.

“Yeah, same,” Link says, though the way he’s been anxiously wringing his hands together for the past few hours says otherwise. It… reminds Sparrow a little of Grant. The anxious mannerisms, the inflections of his voice, it’s… he’s left an imprint. For sure.

“Taylor?” Normal asks, glancing over at the kid half in his sleeping bag, half sitting up against the wall with a pillow wrapped in his arms.

And there’s nothing but silence.

At first, Sparrow thinks he’s asleep, but through the darkness there’s the faint glow of his sclera. A trait Sparrow knew well from Nicky. The demonic glow seems to have passed down, reflected in little Taylor. Normal’s spare clothes seem to fit him a lot nicer than the other two, probably since he’s quite short in stature.

“Taylor?” Link echoes. They’re all looking at him now, and still, he doesn’t say a word.

Link reaches out a hand and taps Taylor’s ankle.

He’s awake, eyes wide and staring straight ahead. His breathing is slow and steady, but still, he’s not responding.

…

Come to think of it, Taylor’s quite chatty, and yet Sparrow isn’t sure he’s spoken since they got inside the FBI’s headquarters.

He hasn’t said a word since Hermie…

Oh, Taylor…

The others glance at each other worriedly. Sparrow puts up a hand when she sees them start to move closer to him—crowding wouldn’t be the best idea.

Instead, Sparrow lets herself leave Normal’s side only for a moment, and she crawls over to him. Taylor’s eyes are wide and his mouth is slightly agape, revealing the point of a fang. His lips are horribly chapped and bloody—some of that blood looks fresh.

“Taylor,” Sparrow says so low it could almost be a whisper, lifting a hand to his shoulder, before placing it down slowly for little chance of startling him. “Can you hear me?”

Taylor blinks and continues staring off.

Sparrow thinks she might cry again. Had he been dissociating this whole time and she hadn’t noticed?

She squeezes Taylor’s shoulder and starts to run her hand up and down Taylor’s arm.

“Hey, okay, just listen to me, hon. I know it’s really scary, but you’re safe right now. I need you to try and focus on me.”

Taylor still shows no sign of acknowledgement.

“What’s wrong with him?” Scary asks, matching Sparrow’s volume.

“He’s just in shock,” she answers, though she’s not sure what she can do anymore. Grounding techniques… many used and many forgotten…

“Lincoln, could… you get me an ice pack from the freezer?”

He nods, and he’s off immediately.

Here’s to hoping that’ll work, she thinks, carefully prying Taylor’s hands away from the pillow and holding them in her own.

Link returns swiftly with the ice pack and she takes it, lets go of Taylor briefly to wrap it inside a loose pillowcase, and places it in his hands, holding the backs of them steady, making sure he can feel the ice.

It’s something that worked for Lark growing up, she remembers. Something about strong physical sensations pulling you out of your head and back to the present.

Taylor’s gaze breaks away from whatever distant spot it was locked on, and he’s looking at their hands and the ice. That’s good. This is good.

“Can you feel that, Taylor?” she asks.

“‘S cold…” he mumbles, his voice so small, so fragile, she almost can’t hear it.

“It is. Keep focusing on it, okay?”

Taylor closes his eyes, and his hands start to shake. Sparrow suspects it isn’t purely from the cold.

Especially when it spreads. Anxious trembles running across his body. After a while, he speaks again.

“I…” he mumbles, opening his eyes, “Wha…”

He looks at Sparrow. And actually at her. Not past her. Not through her.

“Can you hear me?” she asks again.

“Ye…yeah… hi…”

“Hey, kiddo.”

Taylor looks at the walls, and then at the floor, and then at the ceiling, and then out the window. “Um…”

“We’re at your friend Normal’s house. We’ve been staying here for a little bit,” she tells him, sensing his confusion.

“Right. I… I knew that…” he says, looking over at Link, then Scary, then Normal. Sparrow takes her hands and slides them up and down his arms once more, when he starts another question…

“Where’s… where’s—”

He cuts himself off with a sharp gasp, and oh, it hurts .

He’s just a kid.

They’re all kids .

Sparrow thinks she might cry.

Taylor stands up fast, dropping the ice and breathing faster, and Sparrow is quick to catch him when he starts tipping over. His body temperature much higher than before, much like Nicky when he’d start to panic.

“Let’s sit back down,” she says, guiding him back to the sleeping bag. He’s hyperventilating now.

“That—Hermie—tha… that’s… that wasn’t real, right?” he asks between breaths.

“Taylor, hey, slow dow—”

“It wasn’t, right? ” he asks again, his voice gaining more strength however strained it might be.

Sparrow doesn’t know what to say.

“I mean—he’s, like, freakishly resilient! Or—or—or—or just lucky… either… either way! There’s no way!” he continues, yelling now, locking eyes with everyone one by one and bordering on hysteria. “Why aren’t you guys saying anything!?”

Scary starts, “Taylor—”

“We buried him in the backyard,” Link finishes.

Taylor lets out a choked squeak sort of noise, and the waterworks start. It’s not sobs, just a steady stream of tears as the frantic breaths continue. “Maybe it was a—a—another scam…?”

“It’s been days, Taylor,” Scary says.

“ Days? ”

“Ye—”

Before Scary can finish her sentence, Taylor is booking it out the door and into the yard, nearly tripping over himself but stumbling out nonetheless.

“Taylor!” two simultaneous calls from Link and Scary as they get up and chase after him.

Sparrow’s about to follow when she sees her son has stayed put.

Curled in on himself.

Crying.

It’s something she’s seen much of lately, and every time, more of her shatters.

Dood stirs, and turns to wrap his arms around Normal’s waist. The purple static is exceedingly hard to look directly at, but Sparrow’s heart aches nonetheless.

She just wants to make it all go away…

“Oh my god!”

“Taylor, stop! ”

Screams from the backyard.

Sparrow runs out.

Taylor is squirming in Link’s grip, breathing harder and faster than before.

“ Let me go! ” he screams, punching Link in the arm repeatedly with dirtied fists—

Dirtied fists…?

Sparrow’s gaze slips from Taylor to Scary, who’s standing in front of the grave with her arms outstretched, like she’s guarding it. And the grave… oh…

It’s a mess.

The flower has toppled over, and bits of dirt are spread around it.

Oh.

Oh, Taylor .

“ Ow! ” Link shouts. Taylor is kicking at his legs now.

“Fucking— let go! ” Taylor screams again, and the sheer volume could wake up the whole of San Dimas.

“I won’t. You’re—you’re not stable right now, man!”

Taylor lets out a whine, and Link yelps in pain, claw-like nails digging into the flesh of his arms.

“Put me—put me down!” he whines. His face is red, he’s trembling worse, and he’s sucking in breaths like he’s trapped underwater and his lungs have lost their air.

“Taylor, breathe !” Link shouts, his voice strained. Blood trickles down his arm from where Taylor’s piercing the skin.

“Let me go!”

“You know that I won’t.”

Taylor only wheezes in response, pulling his hands away for a moment, revealing bloodied nails, before feebly attempting to pry Link’s arms off him once more.

“Taylor, listen to me,” Link says, holding him tighter and taking on a gentler tone, “stop fighting, it’s not worth it.”

Somehow, this calms him some—well, it stops him from actively attacking.

His head tips forward a little, and his eyes start to droop.

“Taylor, hey, hey, hey, breathe. Breathe. You’re gonna pass out,” Link says, turning Taylor around so he’s pressed up against Link’s chest, and taking an exaggerated breath in for Taylor to follow. He doesn’t.

“But…” he whines.

“There’s no use,” Scary says, taking a step closer to the two. “He’s gone, and I don’t think… looking at his body will change that. It might just make you throw up.”

Taylor lets out a small squeak, and, at last, a sob rips through him.

And another. And another. And another.

A cacophony of sobs becomes muffled in an instant when Link holds him closer, kissing the top of his head and rubbing his back, his eyes glassy with newfound tears. Scary holds his hand in one of hers and rubs his arm with her other, tears sliding down her face as well.

Sparrow approaches the grave.

She moves the dirt back where it belongs, restoring the even surface it had before, and she’s careful to pick up the flower and not hurt it when she replants it, upright and steady, patting down the dirt around it to keep it secure.

She hopes this didn’t disturb their rest, but if it did, she hopes they know how much Taylor cares.

Darryl is Tinky because he's the only one who does purposeful time travel (Grant does on accident so he's Ted)

Hermie is Pokey because theatre kid

Erin is Blinky because she very frequently spies on the dads

Henry is Nibly because I ran out of ideas and vegans do need to eat a lot (he's not a vegan though, he eats souls and people now 😔)

Dood is Webby because I made Hero and Normal Lex and Hannah so it felt fitting.

Darryl is a jokester because I need a reason for my illogical plot

Jodie has 2/3 sons, one is Hermie who is also his brother. The actual second is Nicholas (in the role of Alice) and the third is Nick (in the role of Ziggy)

Nick is from another timeline where Morgan (Bill's ex wife) and Glenn (Bill) left him and for some reason Daryll brought him into this timeline.

Jodie is also Allan (Bill's ex wife's new boyfriend)

Jodie does not tell Morgan about the stuff his brothers pull

Hi, Nonnie! Hope you're doing well 💙💙💙

I apologize in advance if this one isn't your vibe but. I will be talking about dndads again!

I've had this idea for awhile about the s2 teens doing some training/sparring things in their (meager) downtime over the course of season 2, but I'd love to write something about it specifically within the current arc so that both Hermie and Dood can also get in on the action!

All of them most definitely have exploitable weaknesses when it comes to combat. Hermie crumples like a fucking napkin when it comes to anything physical, Scary relied heavily on her casting in the past and now that she's broken ties with Willy she's left weaker than she was before, Dood has just barely figured out how to look like a human, so moving like one and keeping control of how much Everything they allow to seep through will surely be a challenge, and while Link and Normal both have their strengths physically and magically, they need to make sure to protect themselves as the healers of the group.

There's really a lot that could be done with this concept. The teens teaching Dood how to fight hand-to-hand (aka something way less deadly than sucking all the moisture out of the body of your opponent); Hermie gaining confidence and showing some upward momentum in his combat abilities while taking full advantage of his shapeshifting and scamming prowess; Scary building up her own confidence that had been previously damaged by Willy; Link trying to reconcile his aptitude for violence and his desire to not care about anything with the fact that he does desperately care about everything; Taylor tragically learning that some trick moves just can't be recreated frame-by-frame from his favorite anime; Norm using this opportunity as an outlet to finally snap and burn out some of that classic Oak anger.

And also bc I love writing my silly little ships, I do think that there is something inherently romantic about pinning your best friends to the ground and hovering over them until they admit defeat,,, just saying. Just saying.

All six teens are setting up camp for the night in what they used to think was Faerun or often now called 'Old Earth'. Dood and Scary are setting up the fire while Lincoln and Normal set up the tents. Lastly, Hermie is setting out the bedrolls with Taylor. Each pair is making good work of their tasks, various conversations going on as they work together. Most of what Taylor and Hermie talk about is musical and anime related with a few thinly veiled pain level questions mixed in there. They both weren't the best at watching over themselves but recently they settled on forming a pact to keep an eye on each other. Hermie insisted on calling it a pact and Taylor didn't mind--sounded pretty cool and mysterious after all.

Eventually all tasks are complete and the teens share a few snacks while sitting around the fire. They all agree to watch the campsite in shifts throughout the night with Scary volunteering to take first shift.

When she wakes Taylor up to take over, she says nothing happened outside of a few birds and other forest creatures wandering around. That's good news and he quickly gets up, ready to start patrolling. He keeps his cane in one hand and his other sword in his right hand as he carefully looks around the perimeter. The first hour is as peaceful as his friend described. The second hour is different. Their taking a moment to lean against a tree and resting their legs, when he hears three distant noises in this order: A howl "Stay right there!" The sound of crushing and tearing He can't see any silhouettes from where he is, the sound coming from the far distance. The ranger stands up fully, eyes glowing a bright red in the dark as he watches and listens for anything more. He holds his sword upward, readying to strike and grips his cane's handle, preparing to pull the sword out of it too if need be. Except, nothing happens after that. Heck, everyone takes a shift (except Dood) and no one even hears anything strange outside of him either! Every later report should have relieved Taylor. Instead, he kept wondering if whatever the source was--was waiting for some reason to strike again when everyone was comfortable. He stayed up all night, had too. Pretending to be asleep but secretly listening as shifts passed. Come the last, early morning shift, exhaustion nearly dragged him away, eyes drifting closed...

A howl "Stay right there!" The sound of crushing and tearing His mind quickly reminded him why he should stay awake. To make things even worse, recounting that 'stay right there' made him realize that voice sounded similar to Willy's too. They still hadn't met up with him again so far but they all knew it could happen at any time.

What if it was this time? Even if it was, the teen swore to do all his could to prevent anyone getting ambushed or hurt again. This is how Taylor ends up being one of the first people to get up. He's still patrolling the camp perimeter, his bedroll folded up and tucked back into his bag. He can hear the others starting to wake up and opts to continue pacing instead of greeting them. There's the smell of food and echoes of groggy good mornings next. He keeps his eyes on the distance while taking a step forward to do one more circle. But stops when someone puts a hand on their shoulder from behind. Reflexively, he grabs the hand and puts his weight into a toss that sends the person tumbling right over him. He doesn't manage to catch himself though, knees betraying him and sending him to the ground too. He uses his cane to prevent a complete face plant. Grits his teeth next and juts his sword at the fallen person's throat. His skin feels like he's on fire, pupils turned to narrowed slits and the edges of the back of his hair now engulfed in demonic red and orange flames. "Tay...Taylor, wait! It's me. Just Link. Breakfast is ready and I noticed you were gone. Hermie mentioned you were over here, so I said I'd come get you." "Oh." The ranger stares for a few minutes, blinking slowly, blade tip only an inch shy of his best friend's neck. Link doesn't look afraid, only concerned. There is a bag of mini muffins in one of the soccer player's hands too. Other hand now on the blade and moving it out of his face. The sword lowers easily now that Taylor's aware of who he almost sliced and diced.

The cautious teen still feels hot, too hot, and tense from nerves. His knees are hurting from the fall and arms as well from tossing someone much taller than he is. On any other day, the teen would celebrate successfully pulling off the move. With no sleep and the compulsion to patrol more, all he does instead is look away from his friend again and over to that familiar point in the distance. Its not any different than before but could be soon. Or maybe it wouldn't change, things could be fine, everyone else seemed to think so after all. Lincoln is standing the next time he looks back over and helps him get back up. "We really should go back for now." "I'm not done though." "But, listen to me, you should get something to eat before we go." "Well, I think I need to keep watch more instead, okay? There were weird sounds and someone was out there....What if its the Mayor or Willy or both!" Its only when he hears an echo of his own voice and sees Link's now widened eyes that he realizes he shouted that response. Taylor feels nauseous right away and looks down to his own hands with frustration. He squeezes the colorful grip on his cane and closes his eyes. Tried to think of something calming or distracting and he latches onto arguing with Hermie yesterday. It was a disagreement over some musical lyrics that truthfully neither of them fully remembered. Then, that train of thought gets him thinking on the pact again and he takes another breath. Within a few minutes of this, flames now wrapped around his tail, horns, body, and in his hair disappear like blown out candles. He opens his eyes again. Link's still there, staring at him with one hesitant hand reached out. Taylor musters a muttered apology for the shouting and takes his hand. Neither of them say much else outside Lincoln's own apology. The awkwardness wrapped around them as they walk back to camp in silence. Taylor's....tired and Lincoln is afraid he'll say something that might upset him again. Its obvious something's off to everyone else too when they walk over. Taylor sits down between Hermie and Lincoln. The uncle and nephew--cousins--siblings--have a little whispered exchange that the soccer player can't quite make out. It ends with Taylor sharing a packet of muffins with the actor though so Lincoln's is relieved. Breakfast is quiet for the next few minutes until, surprisingly, Dood breaks the silence with an assortment of corny, very dad-like jokes. Including a few with the classic two part set-up. Only the eldtritch teen forgot to give anyone a chance to answer until Normal explained that part. Apparently, Scary had shared a joke book with her recently. One of Terry Junior's old favorite books. Dood's earnest delivery of the jokes manages to get a few laughs even from Hermie. Taylor hadn't laughed at all, instead, he only contributed a bit of snoozing, having drifted off while leaning against Lincoln's shoulder. Hermie took the rest of the muffins from now lax hands, gave Linc a warning type of look, and went to go talk with Normal. The curly, brown-haired boy pointedly ignored the look and carefully moved Taylor around so that his head was resting in his lap. The teen smiles at some of Taylor's murmured sleep talk, making out a few character names and random desserts. When a morning breeze passes through some minutes later, he softly lays his jacket over his companion like a blanket and hopes whatever good dream he is having continues.

Firstly, the intro is insane. I can't even. This episode, overall, made me he cackle throughout. This whole riff at the beginning with John and Mae Hailes is very funny. Was this always supposed to be Scam??? Or it just worked out that way?

These Scary apology moments are hilarious.

Anthony is trying so hard to keep the dads with them. He knows we need that catharsis. But the teens don't want them around, understandably. I'm glad they worked it out to keep the dads around and the teens still in character. We need the character bits!

Boss Kicks. Hoo boy. This whole bit is hilarious.

Then all the phones get broken. Everyone is insane this episode. Now the dads have to stay since they can't communicate.

I just love Dood. So much. They're so adorable. (Even though he immediately killed 2 guards to solve a problem. We'll just ignore that for now.)

I feel Taylor's excitement about finally having skills and spells that are useful. It feels good when the DND stuff actually works out. But that excitement leads to full Freddie insanity by the end of this episode.

I guess the whole bush riff goes with the cum nuggets from last episode.

Scary and Hermie fun times! We haven't gotten enough of Hermie lately. This is one of those moments when failing is hilarious and not just sad.

All the locker stuff is great. A beautiful Will and Freddie moment. Love this. Of course the locker combo is tied to the school. And thank you to the artist who's been drawing the images of Normal's Teeny the Teen calendar. All great character work here.

All this portal stuff is also crazy. This seems so overpowered. Like the amplifier. That also feels overpowered. Seems too easy to just hop realms. (Why do all the other portals go to Hell? Anthony - you setting up something with the FBI invading hell? As they have wanted to do all season? And kinda did earlier... But that didn't really go anywhere. Shmegan just likes to show up randomly, I guess).

Grant and Linc's convo. 😭 Give me more character interactions. We need it. That's where the catharsis is gonna be.

Taking notes on this episode just makes me realize how many weird riffs there are. So many things to comment on. Normal wants to help these guards so much. So many distractions.

And then we get to the Taylor and Freddie show at the end. Another hilarious and insane Freddie plan. We know we're in for an adventure when Freddie starts saying "here's what it is" over and over again. His whole plan is inciting revolution? That's his plan to get them all in the school? Anthony is so kind to roll with this in any way. Thanks for that Les Mis reference, Anthony. Much appreciated.

Love that Nicky is just the errands runner at this point.

Love that Dood can sense the spirit in the Teeny costume. 🥰

What an ending. They are totally surrounded in this school. But I guess the dads can just make portals. That does suck some of the tension away. Overpowered, I'm telling ya. But that was a fun, insane listen. Great episode with funny riffs. Excited for the next one.

also i've been thinking about mindscape stuff just in my head when i'm bored cuz i honestly love mindscapes one of my FAVE things in media like i fucking loved the death of a salesman and just hfuufidjehsyfhgegdhfhj i was like okay i have a half baked concept i play around with in my head of them going in TAYLOR'S mind for whatever reason because they need to grt something and it's in taylor's mind because taylor is the king of emotional repression so it'd be the hardest to find im so sorry this is the most half baked idea idek why i'm talking about it i'm tired but then they have to go in taylor's mind 👍👍👍 and this is the story of how everyone finds out (including himself) that taylor actually has some issues....
