Hey besties,
Was at a writing retreat yesterday. Fun times. I can't seem to get used to how raw it feels to have your work on display, picked apart and analysed by people, no matter how insanely intelligent those people are. The Wits Writing Cohort for 2023 showed me flames, lots of love, and challenged me. I am all the better for it. I love these people.
In putting together my essay, I found myself thinking back to what Akwaeke Emezi said about impermanence, to how painful and confrontational loss is and how we never think about how fleeting life is until we have no other choice but to. I had to dig a little to summon the truth of my experiences with loss and grief, and that was a shitty experience. Writing about real-life sucks.
The poignant reflection on death, dying and the ephemerality of life and relationships in these Emezi's DEAR SENTHURAN and Bongani Kona's OUR GHOSTS WERE ONCE PEOPLE serves as a gentle (not the right word, but we'll accept it) reminder that nothing remains static no matter how much we wish. It reminds me of how, try as we might to bend our realities to fit our desires, sometimes impermanence is needed for growth.
We can only manipulate our situations so far before they all break apart.
I will be heavily leaning on these two books on this final stretch of the assignment.
