ADRENALINE, PULSING. never before has ronnie felt this sporadic, this spread-out & thinned into nothingness. a vapour of their former self, the firelight burning in their pupils, the call of the elements — all these things, and more, serving their feet to keep stepping forth. sneakers, laces flapping against the asphalt, slick with rain, with — the thought chokes them. nearly sends them to the nearest bush, as remiss as they are to admit it. how could this fucking be happening. how could they not have seen it coming. racing. racing. wondering if their shack would be raided. their home. every old and new thing for which they had worked so desperately hard.

and then, from nowhere, came another old thing. ronnie has not realised that there are tears streaming down their face, making tracks through the ashen smoulder that blanches their melanin grey and harried. bags, underneath their eyes; a tear in their favourite jacket. pressing a cold compress to someone's forehead, glancing up with an intention to shout for another first-aid kit — only to see him. like something slow & in motion from the damn movies, two friends reunited underneath dire circumstance & pain fading in a slow, slow crawl around them. "...nate?" it clogs their throat. they're in shock. they know this. it doesn't help them. "...nate!"
