now that i’m reading the original latin of the pharsalia i don’t think i’ll ever be over suzanne collin’s genius when she wrote thg. there’s traces of lucan EVERYWHERE but my favorite by far is cato’s story, especially this quote:

“the gods favored the victor; cato the lost cause”

because, truly, the gods of the arena (i.e. seneca crane & co) favored katniss & peeta while cato favored the games, despite their dwindling popularity and hatred within the districts.

then there’s plutarch, the embellishing historian, telling true stories with extra spice to subtly influence his audience’s thoughts. seneca, the respected philosopher and friend of the emperor, forced to take his own life as punishment for conspiracy. coriolanus, the general who treated commoners and his tribunal so badly that they eventually threw him out of rome. enobarbus, the cynic who played both sides in the war between antony and caesar.

So my partner works in politics and it’s clear that, as we approach Election Day, turnout has been exactly as expected - AWFUL. Even in a state like ours where the ballot is LITERALLY DROPPED OFF AT YOUR DOORSTEP with ballot drop boxes everywhere, voters just aren’t showing up. It doesn’t get any easier than that, but US voters still refuse to exercise their privilege. I just cannot understand apathy at time like this.

IT IS NOT JUST ROE AT STAKE. IT IS AFFIRMATIVE ACTION. IT IS TRANS RIGHTS. IT IS MARRIAGE EQUALITY. IT IS DISABILITY RIGHTS. IT IS THE SAFETY OF FUTURE ELECTIONS. VOTE LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT - BECAUSE IT DOES.

I’m so frustrated and scared for what tomorrow will bring. This is your reminder to show at the polls up tomorrow.

this is not very important in the grand scheme of things, but I saw a post on instagram about polyamory. and at one point the person said that every single human being experiences jealousy. and I have strong feelings about it! it's soapbox time! this was the One (1) thing I was very torn up about in my self-discovery process as a teen. because I don't do jealousy. and it was the thing that make me feel broken, or like I was not experiencing real love when I was in a relationship, or when I had crushes.

this is not a humblebrag about being somehow enlightened for this. I'm full of anxieties and negativity and poorly hidden anger. and envy, which I think might be jealousy's cousin (or at least people sometimes use them interchangeably). I envy people for all sorts of things, for being prettier, smarter, for writing better fic... and sometimes I envy people having what I perceive as better relationships (including friendships and family relationships) than mine. but this is deeply different from not wanting them to have that! sometimes I have the "I'd like to be invited" feeling, but I've never once thought "I don't want them to have a party at all" even if the party is my partner having the time of their life with someone else.

(and, who knows, maybe someone else feels the same. and I would have loved to hear that. that's why I'm posting this instead of going through my feelings in my diary)

anyway solidarity with aros and aces for every time they have to hear that romantic love or sexual attraction are a fundamental part of the human experience. the only fundamental part of the human experience is putting a food inside a dough and then cooking it. love might be fake but dumplings are real.
