Rare it is so crazy to remember that pome and mari were on their own without rain or Millie for a while 😭 whatthe hell… is there anything you wanna talk about in regards to their relationship?
Oughh oh god. I mean like, Michelle and the girls all were kids together except for that one time I was like um do i include Michelle. Yes yes i do and will. Michelle is literally the first so lol and Pomme being the middle child here plays with both a lot, but Michelle likes to spend more time with the older kids rather than with Marigold. I think that's why Mari gets attached to Millie immediately, other than the fact that they're both explosively playful, even if Millie appears calmer when they're not playing together. Mari constantly bothering Rain and riling him up to get a reaction and start bickering. Oh Mari. ANYWAYS to really answer your question, they get along pretty well and Mari gets Pomme to act a little rebellious and cause chaos together, but Pomme is a Lot calmer than her and prefers less messy playing. So Mari likes to rile her up and Pomme can get so nervous that she tears up and gets overwhelmed and hides away in the garden. Mari's not trying to be mean, so she apologizes always, she just doesn't give up easily, since half the time, Pomme ends up having fun causing minor chaotic messes. Like, putting dirt in their favorite glasses to plant flowers, bringing many ants in the kitchen, breaking toys by throwing them out the second story window onto the garden bushes, tearing curtains, jumping from the sofas to chairs to kitchen counters. Kids playing ya know. And she does many times shield Mari from the blame, though Puffychu know them well, so they let it slide easily.
Gooooooood, characterization is so difficult, especially when i make SO many kids and siblings. They have to make sense and especially the puffychu kids make a lot of sense to me i relate to how they act, probably cus i have 3 siblings and we all have different ages, my little brother being half my age. So it's not so weird that my piratecove au characters have so much lore and characterization and i created them in early January, meanwhile my flowerpot au kids I've been drawing since September (the twins) and October (Finch) and I'm just now really giving them some backstory and characterization. But also, the Piratecove au family is way messier and chaotic, which reminds me of mine really, and the Flowerpot au family, is just, so calm and peaceful, its really comforting to me, what I'd imagine I'd love having. So i don't wanna, idk, "taint" them with trauma. But i realise, they gotta have some everydya stuff going wrong at least, or bickering, or stuff like that. And then i wrote Finch's backstory Ough. Anywayys The twins are playful but very composed and calm, Finch is a distinctively quiet kid, who looks grumpy most of the time and likes to play alone and quiet places, i don't think he'd enjoy playing with Mari lol L, How did i get here why am i rambling

My RSA OCs At NRC
Hello everyone!
Today, I thought I’d do something a little different. Since RSA doesn’t have any established dorms yet (I’ve seen many interesting fan ideas based on the heroes opposed to the Great Seven and countless fan dorms) I thought it would be interesting to look at some of my RSA babies and see which NRC dorm would suit them best. Most of these are based on their personalities and interests but some of these are purely aesthetic.
~~~
Tumblr media
Minette would be in Heartslabyul, no doubt about it! Out of all the dorm uniforms, she would look soooooo adorable in a Heartslabyul one, to the point I might draw her in one in the future (I can also see Heartslabyul having the most beastmen students after Savanaclaw). She would also get along very well with Cater in Trey. I can imagine Trey helping Minette improve her baking and her helping him make treats for the unbirthday parties. Her super bubbly disposition might afoul of Riddle a few times, but otherwise, I believe Heartslabyul would be a good fit for her. A close second might be Pomefiore since she also fits that aesthetic but I lowkey wouldn’t want to put Minette in Pomefiore for…reasons…
Tumblr media
With Mateo, it’s a tie between Savanaclaw and Ignihyde. With his athleticism and wannabe tough guy attitude, he’d fit right into Savannaclaw and I imagine he’d get along with Ruggie. He also really admires Leona so he would probably enjoy being in that dorm. But he’s also very tech savvy and he and Idia have a lot of the same interests. I also have this idea of a lot of the Ignihyde students sort of being either introverts or edgelords and the latter definitely fits Mateo’s personality. He’d also definitely be one of the more extroverted members in that dorm.
Tumblr media
Although I think Lilianne would want to be in Pomefiore, I see her more as an Octavinelle student. She would absolutely rock the Octavinelle dorm uniform and I can imagine Azul wanting to make use of her very charming and astute personality. She would definenntly be working in the Monstro Lounge but the Octavinelle trio would also appreciate her on a more personal level because she’s also very intelligent and emotionally literate, traits that would come in handy in more…dubious dealings. I actually see a lot of her traits in Jade and I think they’d get along too, they’re a lot alike, sans the sadism.
Athena, Andrew and Ayse under the cut!
Tumblr media
Now with Athena, I definitely see her being in Pomefiore and god help Vil with the chaos he’d have to endure dealing with two highly competitive archers in his dorm! Though Athena would be a little more reserved about showing off her skills and definitely wouldn’t be joining him for “hunting”. But if she and Rook were doing target practice and decided to make a competition of it, no one would be safe! Beyond that, Athena is also a very refined and sophisticated young woman without being a snob and would wear a Pomefiore uniform with beauty and dignity. Vil would definitely think well of her, though he’d disapprove of her habit of picking up strays she finds outside to take care of. The only reason she gets away with this at RSA is because she is in Neige’s dorm and he lowkey does the same thing. Athena would also get along well with Epel too and I can see her kind of being like an elder sister figure to him and helping him in the way my other pome ocs don’t have the patience to do.
Tumblr media
SAVANACLAW!! Without question, Andrew would be in Savanaclaw! I also headcanon him as being in the RSA dorm thats a contrast to Scar (so a Simba-centric dorm I guess?) so Savanaclaw definitely makes sense. And with his brash manners and stellar athletic skill, he would fit right in! I can definitely see him and Jack being buddies and Leona would appreciate his presence on the spelldrive team. Also, considering how much Leona and Vil beef with each other, I imagine the “forbidden” element of Andrew’s relationship with Farron would be just as strong, maybe even more so.
Tumblr media
Ayse is another one I’m somewhat stuck on. Because she’s a selkie, my immediate thought is that she’d be an Octavinelle student. Because most of the dorm is underwater, I think she might be a little more comfortable displaying her seal form around other creatures of the sea. She’d also look really cute in an Octavinelle uniform too. But beyond that and her intelligence, I actually think she might be very out of place in that dorm because the octatrio’s personalities might make her uncomfortable, especially Azul and Floyd’s. She’s very sweet but also painfully shy. So I think Ignihyde would be a good fit for her, Scarabia would be a good fit too but Ignihyde more so for aesthetic reasons.
I’ll do more of these in the future, after I’ve developed my other RSA babies a bit more!
Hear me out: who would the Shipcrew main in Super Smash Bros
Asu - Marth (Default bc blue). Very rarely he'll use Chrom or Lucina if someone else picked Marth, both in their default colors
Fen - Mario (Striped purely to annoy his friends or Yellow) or Fox (Orange)
Berry - Shiek (Red), Samus (Pink) or Link (Teal)
Qassim - Sonic (Purple, bc he'd definitely be a big fan of NiGHTS) or Robin (White)
Hassan - Ganondorf, Snake, or Wolf (all default)
Leaf - Zelda (Green, Default or Violet), and, not often but sometimes, Peach (Green), Daisy (Green or Default bc yellow is good too), or Palutena (Green)
Pome - Yoshi (Yellow), Kirby (Orange), King Dedede (Blue), Pichu (Red), Corrin (Orange), Inkling (Orange), Toon Link (Default or Red), Zero Suit Samus (Shorts Orange) [she would choose regular Samus but doesn't bc Berry plays as her so often], Bowser Jr. (Bowser Jr., Roy, or Wendy), Megaman (Orange) and Diddy Kong (Default or Cyan). She has a randomizer on her phone.
I'll ask Honey about Jin but he only just got a switch like last week & idk if he's even played smash before lmao (IMO Jin would be Young Link or Roy tho [a FE character to match Asu])
TW chapters before, have always been social and psychological, but chapter 5 in particular is a huge middle finger to stereotype-and common beliefs/views of stereotypes.
Many assumes Vil’s backstory involved him being poor, but Kalim already proves just because you’re rich doesn’t mean your life have no problem. And before the chapter starts, many people antagonize Vil for he is harsh towards Epel, and he’s the prettily elegant one, “the mean girl”, in haters’ words, when Leona and Idia, who are objectively bigger jerks, who are understandably more disliked in-universe, get passed in the fandom for they are relatable/more masculine/boyish. Yes, ugly people have their own problem. That doesn’t mean pretty people don’t have their problem, ranging from being harassed, prejudiced as superficial or being bitch, etc.
Media and culture, for years, have been painting masculinity as strength and femininity as weakness, lawful is bad and chaotic is good, the beautiful/elegant people is wrong and the cute ones are innocent/on the right side.
Riddle already have it bad for he is lawful, but Vil has it worse for he is not only lawful, but also being feminine and pretty. Not to say we have to be unreasonably lawful like Riddle or super strict like Vil, what’s I’m trying to say is, the mindset of law and femininity is purely bad and chaos and masculinity is purely good is wrong-though,  generally “pure” mindset is wrong.
Related to this, TW actually run on gray morality, not black and white. You’re too black and you get hated (like Leona and Idia) , but if you’re too white you get laughed (like Deuce, Jack, Kalim) And it’s fine. Everyone can be both wrong and right in different times , and that’s how it is in real life too. Nobody is pure evil nor they are pure good . Purity  (in concept and principle)is never good actually.
Many people are rooting for Epel for the points above, for he is both chaotic and want to be masculine, and antagonize the pretty, lawful and feminine Vil, but overtime fandom are proven to be wrong. Pome chapter is huge callout for  the stereotyping mindset, as well, the previous points. What Epel wants isn’t “for people to look past his looks”, it’s “to be as masculine as possible in both looks and personality” . He is not fighting prejudice, he is simply giving in to the idea of toxic masculinity. He doesn’t want people to think he’s a badass despite his look, he want to be beefy so ppl can tell he’s a badass in first glance.  His idea of masculinity is to talk shit to people , be beefy as possible, to pick fights and only fight with fists. He is projecting the idea of masculinity to Jack, like how he says he wants to be beefy as Jack. It’s like when girls using a model, or basically someone else, to be her base of ideal beauty, which is equally unhealthy. It’s not fine even if it’s boys who do it, as it’s still not accepting who you actually are.
Speaking about Jack, he too is a victim of prejudice. In his robe story, Ace is surprised he’s from Pyroxene and not the Savannah., implying the prejudice beastmen only come from the savannah (and gladly Riddle immediately calls Ace out for it),  in his voice lines, he is offended by  Ruggie’s disbelief reaction when he says he never got red mark in exams, and he is also offended when MC is shocked he says he want to go to the library, implying the prejudice “beefy men must be brainless muscle”. Jack, is still proud of his beastmen heritage and is sporty and active, but he is also fighting prejudice of beefy men are dumbasses by studying as hard as he does his physical exercises.
We are also fed by culture and media that the word “ugly” and “beautiful” is limited to just visual things, when Pomefiore, Rook and Vil makes it clear “beauty” is everything that can be your advantage/power or your every good trait (like being unyielding, having bond and understanding others, and having special code of conduct). Which it means, the opposite also applies-that the word “ugly”  Vil mentioned to himself before his overblot is more referring to his other traits. That he finally cheats, that he is weak and gives in to his stress-if he thinks strength is beautiful then he must thought weakness is ugly.
Not to say looks doesn’t matter, because it is, as we humans are visual creatures, and if visuals don’t matter, we don’t only wouldn’t have fashion or beauty care products, or visual arts, but even visual informations like newspapers, books, or even socmed pages, and fashion can be a form of self expression. The problem is when people don’t use their brain and see past through someone’s looks. Looks is part of one’s identity, but it’s not all there is to them.
Riddle paints himself as the judge and executioner, not only establishing law of the Queen of Hearts but also punishes people who crossed her rules on the place with his UM and decapitating them from their magic. Vil, meanwhile, paints himself as a tutor. He’s strict, but he’s not lawful for the sake of law. He seeks to help people grow, to taught people things, but being strict teacher he is, he refuses to teach in first go, letting you try your own method first (Deuce’s lab coat story),or that  when he agrees to help, he will teach you how to do it instead of doing it and gives you the final result (Jamil’s dorm uniform) . He is explicitly nicer to people who are willing to learn (his own Halloween card) Alternatively, he can be pestered to help (Halloween, Malleus pretty much pestering him with the whole western dragon vs eastern dragon difference for one hour ), or,despite all his complaints, he will help anyway (Ghost Marriage, Vil mentions Idia often asks for his help) . He also congratulates ppl who did grow well, even if they did beat him. (fairy gala ending, Epel when finally admitting cuteness is advantage too, Deuce right after he beats him) ,  he is fine with people hating him as long they actually develop themselves-that he thinks his responsibility is to help ppl grow, not to make ppl simply adore him (his own dorm uniform)And he also breaks the pattern of great seven incarnate harassing MC and gets gradually more hostile about it. He can also appreciate other’s kindness (his own robe story), as well strong point (PE voice line, he openly admits Epel’s strong point in flying), and can even show some sympathy (not empathy ) (Ortho’s ceremony gear)
Leona insults others to feed his superiority inferiority complex and knows where it hurt (like calling Riddle Red Midget or bastard octopus to Azul-note, that was the insult Azul used on himself on his self deprecating moment after his overblot) , Vil insults other as the ones he deems unworthy yet to call with name, but potatoes, French for potatoes is “earth’s apple”, also back in the day ppl are scared to eat potatoes bc they are still related to nightshade/belladonna and said to be devil’s plant , only after they get past the prejudice they eat potatoes. So yeah if he call you by name , it means he already acknowledge you to certain degree, and if he still uses vegetables he’s still deems you unworthy-no romantic hc blogs it’s not what he will call his s/o
Fandom complained, “save Epel, he doesn’t fit in Pomefiore, and he’s stuck” but is he? He did , in fact, have a choice, mentioned in Jade’s dorm uniform by Vil “You know how to change dorms, right Epel?” It’s by his  own admission he stays in Pomefiore bc his pride to prove Vil wrong that “cute isn’t a strength on its own”  Besides, Pome isn’t just about being yourself (despite being art neurodivergent and defying gender norms), it’s also not about picking your fight-instead, it’s about picking the method.
Again, we are fed to the idea femininity is weak by other media and culture. In TW,yes,  Vil is obectively the most feminine of TW cast, but weak? Definitely not.He can beat the beefy guys physically (PE uniform voice line), easily, and magically, he is strong enough to be able to make barrier than can protect people from MALLEUS (Cater halloween) , and when he’s overblot, he is the only one so far you failed to beat until Deuce used the counterattack using his own magic. Kalim isn’t joking or is in the clouds when he says Vil is one of the strongest mage of the school.
Yes, Yana says fuck patterns and stereotypes, but it’s not like she pulls plot twists randomly out of her ass.She always put foreshadowings first. Vil being bullying victim already mentioned as early as his robe story,, that the overblot cause is always something that is already problem to them even BEFORE NRC-Epel was able to curb people before NRC and get away with being a jerk, it wasn’t until Vil beat him in opening day that he started to be stressed about the whole manner thing.  that he doesn’t like things that doesn’t last from his school uniform, and the previous mentions of Vil’s tutor traits above that he’s not as malicious , not just the mean girl fandom make him to be. Chapter titles always refer to the local great seven incarnate, not specifically the prefect. “Desert’s Tactician” is clearly Jamil, not Kalim.Being a strategist is certainly not Kalim’s trait. Chapter title not referring to him, he wasn’t stressed before NRC, and the blot dripping scene happes without him, why the surprise it’s not Epel who overblot ? the build up is all there.
Commission for @equalskiersten, a Shidge Avatar AU!
For info about commissions, click here!
The promise of hot food was enough to make the weary travelers wake up earlier than they had wanted. After all, anything Hunk made was delicious and by now they had been conditioned to have their mouths water at the smell of a campfire accompanied with Hunk’s humming.
“Rise and shine,” Hunk sing-songed. “It’s breakfast time!”
In a flash, Lance was out of his sleeping bag and in front of Hunk with his bowl at the ready, calling out “Dibs on first serving!” as he went.
However, Lance’s face fell when he saw what Hunk ladled into his bowl.
“Hunk,” Lance said, scowling and pointing at the meal. “What is this?”
“Breakfast,” Hunk answered, stirring his pot.
“No, this is berry soup. It’s hot water with berries in it. That’s it. Whole berries in water.” Lance intoned dryly. “You know. The same thing we had for dinner last night. Which was not a real meal last night. Nor is it a real meal this morning. It will never be a real meal. Ever.”
“Well, Lance,” Hunk snapped, putting his hand on his hip. “It’s the best I can do with practically nothing to work with. Considering we’re out of food supplies and we literally made camp, made berry soup, and passed out after a day of evading the Fire Nation army.”
“Okay, okay!” Lance said, holding up his hand defensively, storming over to sit on a log, still looking irritable. “Some meat would be nice, though.”
“I don’t see you getting up at the crack of dawn to go hunting,” Pidge said as she rolled up her sleeping bag. “Or foraging for anything else edible. And it’s not like we can go fishing in the middle of a plain.”
“We’re in Fire Nation territory, is anything other than these berries actually edible?” Lance asked, holding up his spoon for emphasis.
“Actually, in this area, there’s five more types of fruit—to include three berries and two pomes—as well as three types of nuts, over three dozen herbs, and seven different types of vegetables that can be safely consumed,” Pidge said, tying her sleeping bag in a roll, tossing it effortlessly onto Yorak the Skybison’s saddle. “Then whatever you want to hunt or fish.”
Lance frowned and narrowed his eyes as her before grumbling. “Of course you know that, you know-it-all…”
“Wow, stellar comeback, Lance,” Pidge said dryly, putting a hand on her hip. “You spend all night thinking of that one?”
“Lance has a point, though,” Shiro interrupted, petting his Skybison affectionately while feeding him grass. “We’re going to need more supplies before we go too much farther.”
“The Avatar has spoken!” Lance proclaimed grandly. “Messages direct from the Spirit World!”
“It’s common sense in both our world and the Spirit World,” Princess Allura of the Northern Water Tribe pointed out, frowning as she checked their water stores. “We are going to need to find water soon, too.”
“Pidge, you’re our navigator, how close are we to a town or village?” Shiro asked, looking over at the only nonbender of the team.
Pidge unrolled her map. “Says here that there’s this little town about a two hour’s flight from here. We can do some shopping there, and get water from the local wells.”
“Perfect.” Shiro said. “We’ll head there straight after everyone has eaten. And for the record,” He added, turning to Hunk. “I love berry soup.”
“Thank you, Shiro,” Hunk said, throwing a smug look in Lance’s direction. “It’s good to know that someone around here actually loves and appreciates everything that I prepare for this team.”
“Oh, come on!” Lance exclaimed. “He’s the raised-by-Air-Nomads vegetarian! He doesn’t know how good your buffalo yak stew is! He’s totally biased against beautiful, wonderful, soul-filling meat dishes!”
“Sorry, Lance,” The earthbender said, his tone not sorry at all. He made a grand gesture towards Shiro and declared, “But ‘the Avatar has spoken’.”
Lance plucked out a berry and threw it at Hunk, who ducked at just the right moment. Unfortunately, the berry did end up hitting a human target, in this case, the very grumpy, just-woke-up firebender Keith.
“What was that?” Keith asked, looking confused, not quite sure what hit him.
“Just part of your Avatar approved breakfast,” Pidge said, flashing a mischievous grin towards Shiro across the campfire.
“Sounds catchy,” Shiro commented, returning the grin.
All too soon, the campsite was packed up and with a flick of the reins and Shiro’s order of “Yorak, yip yip”, the Avatar and his companions were off.
They landed Yorak a distance from the village, and created a strategy for going shopping.
“It’s probably best to go in pairs,” Shiro said. “Hunk, Lance, you two go find meat. Keith, Allura, water. And Pidge and I will find fruit and vegetables.”
“Of course he’d divide us up like that,” Lance mumbled to Hunk.
“What was that?” Pidge asked, suddenly appearing behind the waterbender and the earthbender, causing both to jump.
“I said, I think we can work with that!” Lance squeaked, cheeks red.
Pidge narrowed her eyes at him, lips pursed.
It was no secret to the team that Pidge had a massive crush on Shiro. Unfortunately, Shiro seemed to be the only one unaware of this massive crush. To add to the misfortune, the entire team—minus Pidge—was very aware of Shiro’s crush on Pidge. In the last six months since Lance, Pidge and Hunk discovered Shiro frozen in an iceberg in the South Pole, Shiro and Pidge had grown closer as friends and seemed to always be able to find a reason to work together on even the most trivial of tasks.
But now here they were, walking through the streets of this small Fire Nation village. They had been through a lot together, and with the date of the solar eclipse quickly approaching they would face a lot more.
But for now, in their stolen Fire Nation clothing and with Shiro’s hair having grown in, no one would have known that they were planning an attack on Fire Lord Zarkon. No one would have known that this was the Avatar, and with him was one of the best strategic minds and inventors in the world.
For now, they just looked like two normal awkward teenagers, blushing and stealing glances at each other as they moved from stand to stand. They tried hard not to stutter and stumble when they accidentally brushed each other’s fingers reaching for produce. They tried in vain to inform the kind lady that they weren’t boyfriend and girlfriend, but didn’t necessarily object when she gave them two extra oranges in the name of “young love”. Still, they walked away quiet and unsure of what to say to each other, how to defuse the tension a stranger had just given them.
“So…” Pidge said awkwardly at the following stand, holding up a fruit. “Papaya.”
“Uh huh. Papaya,” Shiro agreed, unsure of what else to say or do other than look at her.
“It’s a silver piece to buy,” The grumpy old man behind the stand said. “And three silver pieces for you to just hold it while you ogle each other.”
Turning beet red, Pidge and Shiro quickly handed over the silver piece and walked away.
Shiro glanced at Pidge out of the corner of his eye. He had been wanting to ask Pidge out for a long time. He had been trying to get up the nerve to talk to her about feelings and that sort of thing, and he promised himself that today—this trip—he’d do it. He’d ask her to join him for a cup of tea in the local tea house, like a real date that real teenagers went on.
But after those last two stands—and their owners—he wasn’t so sure. Would he just make things worse, more awkward than it already was?
Come on, Shiro, he told himself. You’re the Avatar. Bridge between the spirit world. You’re going to be facing down Fire Lord Zarkon in a month. But you can’t ask a girl to go share a pot of tea with you? Are you the Avatar or are you a chicken lizard?
Avatar. Master of all four elements. Well, three and a half technically (fire being a bit of a, shall we say, work in progress). Point was, he could do this.
Shiro cleared his throat. “So, uh, Pidge, I was wondering…”
He didn’t get a chance to finish his sentence as a large boom was heard in the distance, accompanied by screaming and people running.
Shiro and Pidge froze, turning to each other slowly.
“Five copper pieces says that’s Hunk and Lance,” Pidge said.
“I don’t want to lose five copper pieces,” Shiro told her as they took off running towards the ominous sounds.
Sure enough, in the center of the chaos was Lance, Hunk, and some very angry Fire Nation soldiers. Not just any Fire Nation soldiers, either. The ones that they had spent the last week dodging and gone to battle with several times.
“Commander Morvok’s men!” Pidge exclaimed. “How did they catch up to us?”
“Doesn’t matter, we’ve got to help Lance and Hunk, find Keith and Allura, and go,” Shiro said, scowling at the day’s development. Pidge nodded in agreement.
Quick as a flash of lightning, Pidge whipped out her throwing knifes, hurling them at the soldiers. Cursing the fact that he left his staff with Yorak, Shiro snatched a broom out of the hands of a young teenage boy sweeping the front steps of a shop.
“Hey!” The boy yelled.
“Sorry, need to borrow this!” Shiro called behind him as he ran to join the fight as well.
Two soldiers came running at Shiro, only to be fought off with the improvised staff and a third to be blown back with airbending.
“It’s the Avatar!” Commander Morvok called out. “A thousand gold pieces to the soldier who can appre—aah!”
Morvok teetered backwards, staring in horror at his shoulder where one of Pidge’s knives was buried. Then he looked up and snarled, removing the blade as he glared Pidge down. For a non-bender, that little girl gave him a lot of trouble. Even more trouble than the actual benders. Even more trouble than the Avatar himself.
Morvok saw how her narrowed honey eyes glinted like the silver of her blades in the sunlight, saw the deadly accuracy of her throws, saw her constantly moving, saw her just close enough to the Avatar…
He had an idea.
Today, he was going to—at long last—get his promotion.
After nearly a week of hunting down the Avatar, he would be welcomed and honored by  Fire Lord Zarkon for his expert command and leadership that ensured the continued glory of the Fire Nation.
But, first, he had to get rid of the one true obstacle in his way.
The Avatar’s small, stabby shadow.
“Shoot the girl,” He ordered the archer at his side.
He lifted his bow and aimed.
The sound of the arrow being released was lost in the sounds of the battle, of rocks crashing, wind whooshing, fire blazing, water splashing.
“UGH!”
Shiro turned sharply at hearing Pidge’s cry from behind him. She had sunk down to one knee, her hand pressed to her bicep, a streak of blood running down her arm.
Shiro’s eyes widened, his brain simultaneously blank and overrun with thoughts and emotions.
Pidge.
Pidge was hurt.
Pidge was bleeding.
No one hurt Pidge.
Pidge grit her teeth and moved her hand, frowning at the wound. She would have to deal, she still had to fight, still had Shiro to protect, to have his back.
However, she gasped when she lifted her head.
Shiro’s eyes were a blank and a blue so pale it was nearly white. From underneath the headband he wore to cover his forehead and his clothes, his master airbender tattoos glowed. His feet were no longer touching the ground, a ball of wind, dust and debris forming around him.
Shiro had entered the Avatar State.
No. No, this couldn’t be happening. Not after the last time he went into the Avatar State. Not after he was shot with lightning by Haggar. Not after he finally was starting to be able to regain strength and function in his now-scarred right arm.
“Shiro!” Pidge called, getting to her feet.
Whether he couldn’t hear her over the wind or if he was just ignoring her, she couldn’t tell.
All she knew was that the next forty-five seconds were pure chaos.
“Oh no,” Hunk said, eyes wide.
“Get down!” Lance yelled, dropping to the dirt.
Pidge covered her head.
Shiro threw his head back, his arms out.
Commander Morvok and his men were all thrown backwards, colliding with buildings, fruit stands, and a cart full of cabbages.
Avatar State Shiro was not done yet, though. His blank, glowing eyes found the arrow that struck Pidge, it’s head buried in the ground. Using airbending, he called it to his hand.
Faster than a tornado, Shiro was in front of Morvok, snarling, arrow clenched in his fist. He raised his arm, not caring that the man was whimpering and cowering and begging for mercy.
He was going to take this arrow—the arrow that struck Pidge—and bury it in this pathetic fool’s heart.
Two smaller hands reached up and grabbed Shiro’s arm. “Shiro, stop! Leave him alone!”
Shiro paused, turning his head slightly to see Pidge hanging off of him, her eyes wide as she stared up at him.
“Come on, Shiro,” She whispered. “Let him go. Come back to me, Shiro…”
The tension in his shoulders eased, the wind around him began to die down. His feet touched the ground again, his eyes darkening to their typical steel-gray.
Pidge breathed a sigh of relief as her own feet touched the ground. She moved her hands down Shiro’s arms to grab his wrist. (And, no, not just to feel all of Shiro’s amazing arm muscles, thank you very much, Lance.)
“Let’s go,” Pidge said.
Shiro nodded vaguely, letting Pidge drag him towards Hunk and Lance. They ran off towards the town well to find Keith and Allura, a distraught “MY CABBAGES!” heard in the distance behind them.
After locating the firebender and the Northern princess, both of whom were disappointed to have missed the fight, the team ran to Yorak and quickly left.
Once in the air, Shiro twisted around to get a look at Pidge, who was having her arm tended to by Lance and Allura. She hissed in pain as the waterbenders began the process of healing her arm with their bending.
“How bad is it?” Shiro called, concerned.
“Didn’t go too deep into the muscle,” Allura answered. “Mostly a flesh injury. It might leave a small scar, but nothing too terrible.”
Shiro nodded vaguely. He was starting to feel the emotional and physical fallout of the battle, of entering the Avatar State. His muscles ached, he felt exhausted, his stomach churned, his mouth dry.
And he felt angry.
Angry because the most important person in his life had been hurt while having his back.
Angry because he could have done nothing to stop it.
Angry because he lost control of himself and his emotions.
Angry because what good was it to be the most powerful bender in the world and you couldn’t even really protect the people who matter the most to you?
He turned back to Yorak’s flight path, letting go of the reins with one hand to bury it in the skybison’s soft, thick fur. He heard his animal companion make a worried and comforting grumble beneath him.
Shiro didn’t reassure Yorak that he was fine. He knew he wasn’t.
They flew for hours, mostly in silence. No one discussed at length about Shiro going into the Avatar State. Hunk and Lance gave short answers to Keith and Allura’s questions. The only real upside was that they had remembered to grab their purchases, so lunch was to consist of the papaya Pidge and Shiro had picked up.
Shiro landed Yorak near a stream, allowing the passengers to stretch their legs and the skybison rest for a while before taking off again.
As the fruit was cut up and distributed, Shiro wandered off towards the bank of the stream, mumbling something about meditating. However, he just sat there, watching the fish and frogs in the water.
Shiro wasn’t really paying attention when Pidge came to sit beside him, holding out his portion of the fruit. “So,” She said casually. “Papaya.”
He smiled faintly at the memory of just that morning. Only for the weight of everything after to come crashing down.
“Uh huh,” He mumbled. “Papaya.”
“You going to eat some?”
“Not hungry.”
“You went into the Avatar State, Shiro. You need to eat something before you pass out on us at the reins.”
“I’m fine.” At this, his traitorous stomach rumbled. Loudly. Enough to be heard over the flowing water in front of them.
Pidge frowned, her hair blowing into her face. She tucked a piece behind her ear and said, “No, you’re not. What’s wrong?”
Shiro grit his teeth slightly, his eyes briefly landing on the bright white bandage wrapped around her arm, then he diverted his gaze. “Nothing.” He spat.
“Your shoulders tense when you lie, you know,” Pidge told him, reaching up to gently massage his right shoulder. “You can talk about it, you know. Is it what happened back at the village?”
“Yes.” Shiro admitted, trying desperately hard not to cave into Pidge’s touch and relax.
“Is it because of what happened? When you were in the Avatar State?”
He shook his head. “No. It’s… It’s what led to me going into the Avatar State. I lost control of my emotions, yes. But it’s also why I lost control of my emotions. I saw you hurt, saw the blood, and… I just lost it.”
Shiro drew his knees to his chest, wrapping his arms around his legs. “I’m the Avatar. I’m supposed to save the whole world. But I can’t save everyone, can’t protect everyone. I was reminded that today, because I saw my friend—someone I desperately want to protect and keep safe—get hurt while having my back in a fight. I always know you’ll have my back. But I didn’t do a good job of having yours today. I should have been able to, I don’t know, freeze it in midair. Or blow it off course. Or hit with a rock. Set it on fire. Something. Anything. But I didn’t even see it until too late.”
“Shiro, I hate to break it to you, but, even though you’re the Avatar, you’re still just as human as the rest of us.”
“Sometimes I wish I wasn’t. Sometimes I wish I was more human, more normal. Either not the Avatar or not a bender at all. It would make things a whole lot easier.”
“No, it wouldn’t,” Pidge argued. “If you were more normal, there’s no way we would have ever met, for one thing. And there’s still the Fire Lord to deal with.” She took his hand in hers. “Look, I know it’s hard. I can’t imagine what it feels like to have experienced everything you’ve gone through. But I can be here for you, be by your side. You’re my best friend. I believe you can save the world and everyone in it. There’s going to be bumps and bruises along the way, but that’s just how life works. And let me tell you this: those bumps, those wounds, those scars...”
He looked up and met her eyes as her thumbs gently rubbed the red, starburst-shaped spot on his palm where the lightning had exited his body. He looked into her face, into her kind eyes and gentle smile.
“These scars are what show the whole world we fought as hard as we can. That we keep getting back up when we’re knocked down. We don’t give up, because we believe in our fight.”
Without warning, Shiro threw his arms around Pidge, hugging her tightly, careful of her injured arm, burying his nose into her soft hair as she embraced him in return.
“Thank you, Pidge,”  He whispered. “I couldn’t ask for a better best friend, could never find a better person to have by my side through all this.”
“You’re welcome,” She whispered. She pulled back slightly, smiling up at him shyly. “Want to ask Keith if he’ll heat up some water for tea? We probably have time for a cup or two before taking off again.”
Shiro smiled. “I’d love that.”
It wasn’t how he initially planned for it to happen, but he had gotten his cup of tea with Pidge anyway.
