NJPW Strong Episode 25 - 2/5/2021; NJPW Wrestlers at Giant Baba Memorial Show 2/4/2021
Tumblr media
Last night’s episode of NJPW Strong began the Road to The New Beginning USA. They just had a Road to Lion’s Break Contender, which then transitioned into another “Road to” series; maybe I just don’t know how this all works. The show started off with an interview with Jon Moxley, hyping the IWGP US Heavyweight title match v. KENTA on 2/26/2021. Among other things, Mox said “you can’t litigate your way to this title” and “everyone” has ripped off moves, etc., from KENTA. Of course, we now know the two of them will clash this Wednesday on AEW Dynamite in a Lights Out tag match.
Match results:
The DKC d. Kevin Knight (Triangle Choke, 7:23)
Bateman [ROH], Misterioso, Adrian Quest & Jordan Clearwater d. Brody King [ROH], Barrett Brown, Logan Riegel & Sterling Riegel (Bateman > Brown, This Is A Kill, 11:19)
Rey Horus [ROH] d. TJP [FREE] (Top Rope Victory Roll, 10:41)
Next Friday’s episode will continue the Road to The New Beginning USA.
Tumblr media
This past Thursday, 2/4/2021, beloved veteran referee Kyohei Wada and wrestler/ring announcer Fumihito Kihara held a memorial show at Tokyo Korakuen Hall for All Japan Pro Wrestling founder Shohei “Giant” Baba, commemorating the anniversary of his death. More on that below. However, there were quite a few NJPW wrestlers involved in this show, as you can see from the results below:
Jinsei Shinzaki, Mitsuya Nagai & Tomoaki Honma d. Osamu Nishimura, Andy Wu & Alejandro (6:25)
Atsushi Onita, Great Kojika, Masanobu Fuchi & Shiro Koshinaka d. Takao Omori, Tiger Mask II, Arashi & Tsuyoshi Kikuchi (8:55)
BUSHI [Los Ingobernables] d. Atsuki Aoyagi (10:14)
Yuji Nagata & Yuma Aoyagi d. Minoru Suzuki [SZKG] & Hikaru Sato (12:23)
Keiji Muto, Satoshi Kojima & Suwama d. Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Kaz Hayashi & Masayuki Kono (13:51)
I’ve not watched this show, and don’t know if it’s available through Sources yet. However, a couple of things bug me about this. First, this is listed as the “23rd Death Anniversary” show when it’s only been 22 years. I understand that in the pandemic, time has lost all meaning, so might be an easy mistake to make. Still, the much larger 20th Death Anniversary was only in 2019 (most of which is available to view on NJPWWorld by the way, and was a very fun show), which again, seems like so long ago now.
The other thing is, while there are a few current AJPW wrestlers taking part in this show (including the current Triple Crown champion, Suwama, in the main event, much like the other two Baba memorials), there seemed to be a dearth of wrestlers who actually worked for Baba during his era in AJPW, and most of those are in the second match on the card. (Incidentally, the “Tiger Mask II” in that match was Kotaro Suzuki, and not, obviously, the late Mitsuharu Misawa.) At this point we could put this down to age and retirements, but then again, Atsushi Onita and BJW founder Great Kojika are right there too.
What saddens me more is that this was held during the pandemic, when there’s a state of emergency going on in Tokyo, so the venues for these shows have only gotten smaller (the one in 2001 was at the Tokyo Dome, but only drew 30,000; the 2019 edition was at Tokyo Ryogoku Kokugikan), but so has the card, as it was limited to 5 matches due to the restrictions. Not sure if that’s quite the tribute to Giant Baba everyone was wanting.
Nevertheless, Genichiro Tenryu was present for the proceedings, and the matches themselves look like they could be good fun to watch. There is a chance some of these will end up on NJPWWorld eventually too, so keep an eye out for them.

Full Wrestle Kingdom 14, Road to Tokyo Dome Cards Announced; NJPW Of America Announces The New Beginning USA Tour Dates
Tumblr media
Earlier this morning, the press conference was held that finally revealed the full cards for both nights of Wrestle Kingdom 14, January 4, 2020 and 1/5/2020, as well as the cards for the three Road to Tokyo Dome shows at Tokyo Korakuen Hall next week.
We mostly knew the first show already, with both the IWGP Heavyweight and IWGP Intercontinental titles being defended, with the winners of those bouts facing each other the next night in the Double Gold Dash title unification match (the losers will face each other in a special singles match). This, in addition to Will Ospreay defending the  IWGP Juniorheavyweight belt against the returning Hiromu Takahashi, and the first of two Jushin Thunder Liger retirement matches.
Added to the show, are the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team titles on offer, as Guerrillas of Destiny defend against World Tag League 2019 winners FinJuice. Also, a Texas Deathmatch stipulation match has been added for the IWGP US Heavyweight title, as Lance Archer faces the challenge of the International Purveyor of Violence, Jon Moxley. The rest of the matches... are really just preludes to what will come the next night, but then again, so are most of the title  matches, even moreso than the Double Gold Rush matches.
For instance, the winner of Archer v. Moxley will defend the US belt against Juice Robinson the next night. My money says Moxley, as that was a feud that had build and storyline to it, and really, Juice deserves a big Dome moment.  Or two, as the case may be.
KENTA will defend the NEVER Openweight belt against Hirooki Goto on 1/5/2020 as well, and indeed KENTA attacked Goto at the presser today. Zack Sabre Jr. defends the RevPro Undisputed British Heavyweight title against SANADA too, as these two have had quite a saga since Power Struggle. Roppongi 3K challenge for the IWGP junior tag belts held by Taiji Ishimori & El Phantasmo.
And finally, Jushin Thunder Liger’s final wrestling match will see him team with old rival Naoki Sano, against another team of rivals, in Hiromu Takahashi & Ryu Lee!  While some were looking forward to a singles encounter, at the same time, there is an appeal to Liger going out in a match against the one who could be the IWGP Juniorheavyweight Champion at the time of the match.
(There are reports brewing that Ryu Lee has signed a 1-year deal with NJPW. That jibes with what I’ve been told, but again, nothing is official until it’s official.)
It seems strange that many of the matches are mere setup for matches on the next night. However, I also thought WK13′s card was underwhelming on paper, and that turned out to be a damn good show too. So we shall see.
In the meantime, the cards for Road to Tokyo Dome have been announced, and while there don’t seem to be any of the fun random-ass matches that we’ve seen in prior years, this does boast both the in-ring return of Hiromu Takahashi, as well as Jushin Thunder Liger’s farewell to Korakuen Hall (as this year, New Year Dash!!, the scene of Liger’s retirement, will be at Tokyo Ota Ward Gymnasium instead).

Tumblr media
Meanwhile, shortly before I started writing this edition, NJPW of America announced five dates for a 2020 edition of The New Beginning USA. This may be tempting fate quite a lot, as last year’s version was a bit of a disaster, owing to the visa issues NJPW suffered thanks to the Trump administration. This year, there shouldn’t be those problems, however, also mimicking last year’s edition, they are running this during the New Beginning cycle of shows in Japan as well. So it’s going to be interesting to see who, if anyone, of the major names will be coming over for this edition. It’s a sure bet, whomever is IWGP Heavyweight/Intercontinental Champion won’t be here. There most likely WILL be an IWGP US Heavyweight defense happening here, because, it’d be silly not to. The dates are:
The New Beginning USA - 1/24/2020, Tampa, FL - 1/26/2020, Nashville, TN - 1/27/2020, Raleigh, NC - 1/30/2020, Miami, FL - 2/1/2020, Atlanta, GA
More details as they become available, of course.

The New Beginning in Sapporo Night 1 - 2/2/2019; The New Beginning USA Night 2 - 2/1/2019
Tumblr media
Not one but two shows to report on today, and it will be like this tomorrow too. This morning was the first of two New Beginning in Sapporo shows. No title matches here, but a LOT of angle building. You can see it now on NJPWWorld.
The New Beginning in Sapporo - 2/2/2019, Hokkaido Prefectural Sports Center Hokkai Kitayell (NJPWWorld)
Ren Narita d. Yuya Uemura (Front Suplex Hold, 9:45)
Manabu Nakanishi & Toa Henare d. Ayato Yoshida [K-DOJO] & Shota Umino (Henare > Umino, Toa Bottom, 8:53)
Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Tiger Mask IV d. Takashi Iizuka & TAKA Michinoku [SZKG] (Tenzan > TAKA, DQ, 9:26)
Togi Makabe, Toru Yano [CHAOS], Tomoaki Honma, YOSHI - HASHI [CHAOS] & Ryusuke Taguchi d. Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa, Yujiro Takahashi, Chase Owens & Taiji Ishimori [Bullet Club] (Yano > Yujiro, Schoolboy, 13:38)
Taichi, Yoshinobu Kanemaru & El Desperado [SZKG] d. Tetsuya Naito, BUSHI & Shingo Takagi [Los Ingobernables] (Taichi > BUSHI, Dangerous Backdrop, 13:28)
Minoru Suzuki [SZKG] d. SANADA [Los Ingobernables] (Gotch Style Piledriver, 19:40)
EVIL [Los Ingobernables] d. Zack Sabre Jr. [SZKG] (EVIL STO, 22:01)
Jay White & Bad Luck Fale [Bullet Club] d. Hiroshi Tanahashi & Kazuchika Okada [CHAOS] (White > Tanahashi, TTO, 24:36)
First Jay submits Tanahashi with a new move, TTO, “Tana Tap Out,” but then Jay STEALS THE IWGP TITLE the little shit! Jay’s ascension to the #1 gaijin heel in NJPW is pretty much complete now. EVIL finally gets a singles win over ZSJ. Taichi uses one of the signature moves of his trainer, Toshiaki Kawada, to win the match. Pre-match, Tenzan attempts a reconciliation with one of his old partners, Takashi Iizuka, and it fails miserably. This is probably angle building for Iizuka’s retirement later this month.
Three title matches tomorrow, the full lineup at the bottom of this post.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, last night NJPW debuted in North Carolina, in a show with a title match main event, as well as the US debut of the only Japanese talent on these shows, Tomoyuki Oka in his Dominator Great O-Kharn shtick from RevPro.
- 2/1/2019, Grady Cole Center, Charlotte, NC
Karl Fredericks TLD Clark Connors (10:00)
Colt Cabana & John Skyler d. Lance Archer [SZKG] & Shane Taylor (Cabana > Taylor, Clutch Hold, 10:13)
Dominator Great O-Kharn USA Debut: Dominator Great O-Kharn d. Tracer X (Iron Claw Slam, 8:57)
Marty Scurll & Brody King [Villain Enterprises] d. Jeff Cobb [FREE] & Jonathan Gresham (King > Gresham, Modified Piledriver, 13:46)
Davey Boy Smith Jr. [SZKG] d. Alex Coughlin (Bulldog Bomb, 10:08)
David Finlay Jr. & Tracy Williams [Lifeblood] d. Chuck Taylor & Rocky Romero [CHAOS] (Williams > Taylor, Crossface, 17:08)
IWGP US Heavyweight Championship: Juice Robinson [Lifeblood] © d. Trent Beretta [CHAOS] (Pulp Friction, 27:29) - Robinson succeeds his 1st defense
Post-main, Juice and Beretta showed respect to one another. Juice also, by accounts, cut a promo apologizing for the Japanese talents’ visa situation, and promised next time NJPW comes to North Carolina they’ll bring the full roster. This apparently prompted a “FUCK YOU TRUMP” chant from the crowd. Wow. And in a state Trump won. If the administration is losing the Southern wrestling fan vote...
Best Friends keep losing on these shows, and there is heavy chatter that Dustin and Greg are off to All Elite Wrestling, so that’s probably them doing their tour of jobbing duty then on the way out. Oka debuted, and apparently looked pretty good against a local indie wrestler I’m not very familiar with.
Tonight they will be debuting in Nashville, rounding out these shows. Once again, I’ll be reporting on that tomorrow morning along with tomorrow’s Sapporo show.
- 2/2/2018, War Memorial Auditorium, Nashville, TN
Karl Fredericks v. Alex Coughlin
Colt Cabana & Jonathan Gresham v.  Lance Archer [SZKG] & Shane Taylor
Harlem Bravado v. Dominator Great O-Kharn
Clark Connors v. Marty Scurll [Villain Enterprises]
Jeff Cobb [FREE] v. Brody King [Villain Enterprises]
CHAOS v. Lifeblood Elimination Match: Juice Robinson, David Finlay Jr. & Tracy Williams [Lifeblood] v. Trent Beretta, Chuck Taylor & Rocky Romero [CHAOS]
- 2/3/2019, Hokkaido Prefectural Sports Center Hokkai Kitayell (NJPWWorld)
Toa Henare v. Yota Tsuji
Manabu Nakanishi & Tiger Mask IV v. Ayato Yoshida [K-DOJO] & Shota Umino
Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Ren Narita v. Takashi Iizuka & TAKA Michinoku [SZKG]
Togi Makabe, Toru Yano [CHAOS], Tomoaki Honma & Ryusuke Taguchi v. Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa, Yujiro Takahashi & Taiji Ishimori [Bullet Club]
Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kazuchika Okada [CHAOS] & YOSHI-HASHI [CHAOS] v. Jay White, Bad Luck Fale & Chase Owens [Bullet Club]
IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship:BUSHI & Shingo Takagi [Los Ingobernables] © v. Yoshinobu Kanemaru & El Desperado
IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championship: EVIL & SANADA [Los Ingobernables] © v. Minoru Suzuki & Zack Sabre Jr. [SZKG]
IWGP Intercontinental Championship: Tetsuya Naito [Los Ingobernables] © v. Taichi [SZKG]

The New Beginning USA Night 1 - 1/30/2019; Full Giant Baba Memorial Card Released: Tanahashi/Yoshitatsu v. Miyahara/Sekimoto
Tumblr media
The first of the New Beginning USA shows took place last night in LA.  We all know the issues with these cards, and I’ve already bloviated at length about them. They are what they are.
The New Beginning USA - 1/30/2019, Globe Theater, Los Angeles, CA
Alex Coughlin TLD Clark Connors (10:00)
Jonathan Gresham d. Tyler Bateman (Modified Jackknife, 11:36)
Colt Cabana d. Shane Taylor (Clutch Hold, 10:22)
Lance Archer & Davey Boy Smith Jr. [SZKG] d. Marty Scurll & Brody King [Villain Enterprises] (Archer > King, Killer Bomb, 13:09)
Jeff Cobb [FREE] d. Karl Fredericks (Tour of the Islands, 6:57)
David Finlay Jr. [Lifeblood] d. Chuck Taylor [CHAOS] (Trash Panda, 15:31)
One Night Only Roppongi Vice: Juice Robinson & Tracy Willams [Lifeblood] d. Trent Beretta & Rocky Romero [CHAOS] (Robinson > Romero, Pulp Friction, 32:20)
Y’know, I love me some Roppongi Vice, but I am not sure we needed a 32:20 prelude tag match for Juice Robinson v. Trent Beretta, which will be Friday. Finlay v. Chuckie was No DQ, and pretty surprised Finlay won that, if I’m honest. Doubly surprised Brody King took the fall in that match. Cobb must have squashed Fredericks, good grief... No word yet as to video release of this show.
Tumblr media
AJPW released the full card for the Giant Baba Memorial show on 2/19/2019, today being the 20th Anniversary of Baba’s death at age 61 from cancer.
The main event of the show is an absolute stunner: IWGP Heavyweight Champion Hiroshi Tanahashi will be teaming with former partner, and current AJPW freelancer, Yoshitatsu, against AJPW’s Triple Crown champion Kento Miyahara and BJW World Strong (and AJPW World Tag Team, and ZERO-1 AWA World Heavyweight) champion Daisuke Sekimoto. Sadly, I know who’s taking the fall here, but this should be a GREAT match.
Tomoaki Honma, whose career began in BJW before working in AJPW and NJPW, will be in an 8-man match with Young Lion Ren Narita, BJW’s Yuji Okabayashi & AJPW’s Naoya Nomura. The only real change from what we knew before, is Naomichi Marufuji v. Masaaki Mochizuki has become a tag match.
Abdullah the Butcher’s retirement ceremony will have all sorts of luminaries as part of it, including Keiji Muto, Stan Hansen, and the original Tiger Mask, Satoru Sayama. Should be a real hoot of an event, honestly.
Full card for the event:
Giant Baba Memorial Battle Royale: Mitsuo Momota, Kim Duk, MEN’s Teioh, TARU, Ryuji Hijikata, Yuto Aijima, Joel Deaton, Masao Inoue, Tsuyoshi Kikuchi, Masahito Kakihara, Tamon Honda, Yasu Urano (Referee: Mighty Inoue)
Masanobi Fuchi [AJPW], Yuma Aoyagi [AJPW] & Yoshiaki Fujiwara [FREE] v. Taichi, TAKA Michinoku & Yoshinobu Kanemaru [SZKG]
Eight Man Street Fight Bunkhouse Tornado Tag Team Deathmatch: Atsushi Onita [FREE], Kendo Kashin [FREE], Hideki Suzuki [FREE] & Hideki Hosaka [FREE] v. Shuji Ishikawa [AJPW], Great Kojika [BJW], Mitsuya Nagai [Dradition] & Hikaru Sato [Pancrase MISSION]
Tomoaki Honma [NJPW], Yuji Okabayashi [BJW], Naoya Nomura [AJPW] & Ren Narita [NJPW] v. Kazushi Miyamoto [FREE], Tomohiko Hashimoto [A-TEAM], Daichi Hashimoto [BJW] & Takuya Nomura [BJW]
Abdullah the Butcher Retirement Ceremony: Guests: Keiji Muto, Stan Hansen, Satoru Sayama, Hisashi Shinma
Naomichi Marufuji [NOAH] & Jinsei Shinzaki [Michinoku Pro] v. Masaaki Mochizuki & Shun Skywalker [Dragon Gate]
Jake Lee & Koji Iwamoto [AJPW] v. SANADA & BUSHI [Los Ingobernables] v. Ayato Yoshida [K-DOJO] & Shota Umino [NJPW]
NOSAWA Rongai [Tokyo Gurentai] & Kaz Hayashi [W-1] v. Mil Mascaras & Dos Caras
Jun Akiyama [AJPW], Takao Omori [AJPW] & Taiyo Kea [FREE] v. Satoshi Kojima [NJPW], Yuji Nagata [NJPW] & Osamu Nishimura [FREE]
Kento Miyahara [AJPW] & Daisuke Sekimoto [BJW] v. Hiroshi Tanahashi [NJPW] & Yoshitatsu [FREE]
The next show of the New Beginning USA will be tomorrow, 2/1/2019, although much like last night’s show, I won’t be blogging about it until Saturday, which is also when the first night of The New Beginning in Sapporo takes place. See you then. There will be a title match main event, and Tomoyuki Oka makes his US debut in his Dominator Great O-Kharn gimmick.
- 2/1/2019, Grady Cole Center, Charlotte, NC
Karl Fredericks v. Clark Connors
Colt Cabana & John Skyler v. Lance Archer [SZKG] & Shane Taylor
Dominator Great O-Kharn USA Debut: Tracer X v. Dominator Great O-Kharn
Jeff Cobb [FREE] & Jonathan Gresham v. Marty Scurll & Brody King [Villain Enterprises]
Alex Coughlin v. Davey Boy Smith Jr. [SZKG]
David Finlay Jr. & Tracy Williams [Lifeblood] v. Chuck Taylor & Rocky Romero [CHAOS]
IWGP US Heavyweight Championship: Juice Robinson [Lifeblood] © v. Trent Beretta [CHAOS]

New Beginning USA Cards Announced: Oka Only Japanese Talent, Statement from NJPW Re: Shutdown & Visas; This Week’s NJPW on AXS
Tumblr media
Last night as I lay in bed, NJPW announced the card lineups for next week’s New Beginning USA shows, and...........
Well, let’s address the herd of elephants in the room. There is a whole ONE Japanese talent on these shows. And it’s not Yuji Nagata, it’s not Tomohiro Ishii, it’s not Hirooki Goto, Jushin Thunder Liger, the Young Lions, or any other Japanese wrestler not booked for The New Beginning in Sapporo. Nope, it’s  Young Lion excursionee Tomoyuki Oka, in his Dominator Great O-Kharn gimmick from RevPro in the UK. That’s it. Nobody else.
The reason, at least according to the official statement from NJPW, is what’s at fault for quite a lot right now: Donald Trump, and the US government shutdown he continues. Because of this, NJPW could not get work visas for the Japanese wrestlers:
It is with great disappointment that we must announce that due to the ongoing 2018–19 United States federal government shutdown, we were unable to obtain visas for our Japanese talent who were looking forward to seeing our US fans at the New Beginning in USA.
We are excited to still be able to share a great line-up with our US fans, regardless of visa issues. The IWGP US Champion, Juice Robinson, is defending his title against Barretta and The Great O-Kharn, who is flying in from England, will be debuting in New Japan! What’s more, this show will highlight the talent and potential of our Young Lions, who have been working hard in the NJPW LA dojo. We are looking forward to being able to celebrate the abilities of the exciting new generation of young NJPW wrestlers.
Which, OK. Maybe that is the case. Quite how Tomoyuki Oka of all of them managed to be able to get a visa is beyond me, unless he is being considered a UK/EU citizen, somehow? Which seems unlikely.
Now, I understand this is something that NJPW cannot control. At the same time, it’s another case where they have had information for weeks (I would assume) and didn’t divulge it. Another good example of this would be last March’s Strong Style Evolved card, which promised a dream match between Jushin Thunder Liger v. Rey Mysterio Jr., however right before the show it was changed to Liger v. Will Ospreay, despite it being very well known that Rey Rey was out with a pretty bad left bicep injury weeks beforehand.
I know (and was reminded this morning) that wrestling is a carny business, bait and switches happen all the time, and “The Card is Subject to Change.” But this is something NJPW could have gotten in front of, instead of waiting until the week before the shows to announce the cards AND for the shit to hit the fan before saying something.
So things are what they are. And what they are, are the Whitest, most ROH centric “New Japan Pro Wrestling” cards pretty much ever. Overall, these shows are BAD on paper... for NJPW shows. If this was any other company, this would be just fine, even if a little too Caucasian. I think would be pretty miffed if I had tickets for one of these cards, and believe me I nearly went to Nashville. I’ll watch these on NJPWWorld if/when they appear, but this would not have been worth a 8-10 hour round trip driving from Indy to Nashville.
But that isn’t to say it’s all bad. There are a few things here that will be worthy. I’m pretty sure the IWGP US Heavyweight title match, between Juice Robinson v. Trent Beretta, which headlines the Charlotte show on 2/1, will be a good one. Jeff Cobb v. Brody King is one I’d pay money to see in any other venue. And LA gets a “One Night Only” reunion of Roppongi Vice in the main event against Juice and “Hot Sauce” Tracy Williams. So that’s cool. Johnathan Gresham gets his debut in NJPW as well.
It’s also kinda laughable that the LifeBlood and Villain Enterprises units from ROH feature heavily, but arguably some of their most over members (namley, Bandido and PCO) aren’t appearing here. But there are also LA Dojo wrestlers, which, fair enough. As well as more obscure indie wrestlers, getting a chance in the NJPW ring.
The cards stink, the circumstances stink worse, I wouldn’t pay for them, but I’ll watch them on NJPWWorld. That’s as fair as I can be.
NJPW, next time, be open and honest about this. Even in pro wrestling.
Here are the cards:
The New Beginning USA - 1/30/2019, Globe Theater, Los Angeles, CA
Alex Coughlin v. Clark Connors
Jonathan Gresham v. Tyler Bateman
Colt Cabana v. Shane Taylor
Marty Scurll & Brody King [Villain Enterprises] v. Lance Archer & Davey Boy Smith Jr. [SZKG]
Jeff Cobb [FREE] v. Karl Fredericks
David Finlay Jr. [Lifeblood] v. Chuck Taylor [CHAOS]
One Night Only Roppongi Vice: Juice Robinson & Tracy Willams [Lifeblood] v. Trent Beretta & Rocky Romero [CHAOS]
- 2/1/2019, Grady Cole Center, Charlotte, NC
Karl Fredericks v. Clark Connors
Colt Cabana & John Skyler v. Lance Archer [SZKG] & Shane Taylor
Dominator Great O-Kharn USA Debut: Tracer X v. Dominator Great O-Kharn
Jeff Cobb [FREE] & Jonathan Gresham v. Marty Scurll & Brody King [Villain Enterprises]
Alex Coughlin v. Davey Boy Smith Jr. [SZKG]
David Finlay Jr. & Tracy Williams [Lifeblood] v. Chuck Taylor & Rocky Romero [CHAOS]
IWGP US Heavyweight Championship: Juice Robinson [Lifeblood] (c) v. Trent Beretta [CHAOS]
- 2/2/2018, War Memorial Auditorium, Nashville, TN
Karl Fredericks v. Alex Coughlin
Colt Cabana & Jonathan Gresham v.  Lance Archer [SZKG] & Shane Taylor
Harlem Bravado v. Dominator Great O-Kharn
Clark Connors v. Marty Scurll [Villain Enterprises]
Jeff Cobb [FREE] v. Brody King [Villain Enterprises]
CHAOS v. Lifeblood Elimination Match: Juice Robinson, David Finlay Jr. & Tracy Williams [Lifeblood] v. Trent Beretta, Chuck Taylor & Rocky Romero [CHAOS]
Tumblr media
Ironically, this week’s NJPW on AXS provides a look at the match that had many, such as myself, thinking we would get a Yuji Nagata v. Tomohiro Ishii match during the shows above, as we go to New Year Dash!!, from 1/5/2019 at Tokyo Korakuen Hall. The advertised matches include Nagata, Jeff Cobb & KUSHIDA v. Hirooki Goto, Tomohiro Ishii & Will Ospreay, which actually was very good, with a finisher that makes a bit more sense now. Also, a Los Ingobernables v. Suzuki-gun 10-man match that sets the stage for The New Beginning in Sapporo. Show is at the usual time, with Kevin Kelly & Don Callis, followed by Women of Wrestling: Superheroes at 9pm EST / 8pm CST.
I’m going to try to do an Upcoming NJPW Events post tomorrow.

Strong Style Story Episode 49 - A New Beginning for a New Era
Tumblr media
Yeah hey @damascenocs and myself did a thing: Episode 49 of the podcast, now on Pro Wrestling Only, which is now on Spotify!
It's been almost a month but Geoffrey & Chris are back with the 49th official episode of Strong Style Story! We cover quite a lot in this episode, including:
* A really really good New Beginning tour that actually lived up to the name * What this New Era of Jay White as IWGP Heavyweight Champion can mean, and who could dethrone him * The departures of KUSHIDA, Kenny Omega & Katsuya Kitamura, as well as the signing of Kota Ibushi to an actual NJPW contract * The Giant Baba Memorial Show that has a dream match featuring Hiroshi Tanahashi and so much more * The upcoming New Japan Road cards, which will see Takashi Iizuka retire and an Okinawa show we really wish was making tape * The gawdawful Honor Rising shows and how this was a missed opportunity for some of Ring of Honor's newly signed talents to show off in NJPW * The most obscure and esoteric NJPW-related event happening we can provide
Check it out!

The New Beginning in Sapporo Night 2 - 2/3/2019; The New Beginning USA Night 3 - 2/2/2019
Tumblr media
The second night in Hokkaido took place earlier, and you can see it now on NJPWWorld. There were three title matches today, as well as more angle building for later in the month.
- 2/3/2019, Hokkaido Prefectural Sports Center Hokkai Kitayell (NJPWWorld)
Toa Henare d. Yota Tsuji (Toa Bottom, 7:07)
Manabu Nakanishi & Tiger Mask IV d. Ayato Yoshida [K-DOJO] & Shota Umino (Tiger > Yoshida, Avalanche Butterfly Suplex, 9:31)
Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Ren Narita d. Takashi Iizuka & TAKA Michinoku [SZKG] (Tenzan > Iizuka, DQ, 9:47)
Togi Makabe, Toru Yano [CHAOS], Tomoaki Honma & Ryusuke Taguchi d. Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa, Yujiro Takahashi & Taiji Ishimori [Bullet Club] (Yano > Loa, Schoolboy, 14:15)
Jay White, Bad Luck Fale & Chase Owens [Bullet Club] d. Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kazuchika Okada [CHAOS] & YOSHI-HASHI [CHAOS] (White > YOSHI-HASHI, TTO, 17:57)
IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship: BUSHI & Shingo Takagi [Los Ingobernables] © d. Yoshinobu Kanemaru & El Desperado (Takagi > Kanemaru, Rebellion, 18:02) - BUSHI/Shingo succeed their 1st defense
IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championship: EVIL & SANADA [Los Ingobernables] © d. Minoru Suzuki & Zack Sabre Jr. [SZKG] (SANADA > Suzuki, Moonsault Press, 16:52) - EVIL/SANADA succeed their 1st defense
IWGP Intercontinental Championship: Tetsuya Naito [Los Ingobernables] © d. Taichi [SZKG] (Destino, 21:31) - Naito succeeds his 1st defense
Los Ingobernables de Japon sweep Suzuki-gun, but not without difficulties. Takashi Iizuka attacked Naito pre-main, assuredly at Taichi’s behest, but Naito prevails, and declared he would be going after the IWGP Heavyweight title, while still Intercontinental champion, when he feels like it. LIJ retained both sets of tag belts as well. There is every possibility this isn’t done with EVIL/SANADA v. Suzuki/Sabre, as the latter also hold the RevPro tag belts, so we could potentially see the LIJ duo challenge for those, possibly at High Stakes 2019? Jay White gets another win with the TTO submission. Tenzan tried to break through to Iizuka again but failed once more.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, NJPW made their debut in Nashville, TN, last night, the tour finale for The New Beginning USA.
- 2/2/2018, War Memorial Auditorium, Nashville, TN
Karl Fredericks d. Alex Coughlin (Boston Crab, 9:48)
Lance Archer [SZKG] & Shane Taylor d. Colt Cabana & Jonathan Gresham (Taylor > Cabana, Modified Piledriver, 11:12)
Dominator Great O-Kharn d. Harlem Bravado (Iron Claw Slam, 10:34)
Marty Scurll [Villain Enterprises] d. Clark Connors (Crossface Chickenwing, 13:51)
Jeff Cobb [FREE] d. Brody King [Villain Enterprises] (Tour Of The Islands, 22:27)
CHAOS v. Lifeblood Elimination Match: Juice Robinson, David Finlay Jr. & Tracy Williams [Lifeblood] d. Trent Beretta, Chuck Taylor & Rocky Romero [CHAOS] (Robinson > Romero, Pulp Friction, 31:26)
The main event was an elimination match however I’ve seen nowhere reporting on the order of eliminations, but Lifeblood wins out, sweeping their matches against the CHAOS/Best Friends/RPG Vice trio the whole tour. The six of them all took a bow post-main, which could be about the tour ending as much as anything relating to Dustin & Greg going to AEW. Guess we’ll find out on Thursday when that press conference from Vegas happens. I’ve already heard one rumor which, if true... I won’t be happy about.
Also, I really really wanna see Cobb v. King, so hopefully we get video of these shows up soon.
Katsuyori Shibata made an appearance to start the show off, and it was his turn to make apologies for the visas debacle, but I didn’t hear if any anti-Trump chants started up this time.
The next show isn’t until Wednesday, a resumption of Road to the New Beginning, however the next show to be shown live on NJPWWorld will be Saturday’s tour closer from Osaka, and then The New Beginning in Osaka on Monday 2/11.
- 2/6/2019, Nagano Athletic Park Gymnasium
Shota Umino v. Yuya Uemura
Yota Tsuji v. Ayato Yoshida [K-DOJO]
Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Ren Narita v. Manabu Nakanishi & Tiger Mask IV
Tomoaki Honma & Ryusuke Taguchi v. Chase Owens & Taiji Ishimori [Bullet Club]
Togi Makabe, Toru Yano [CHAOS] & Toa Henare v. Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa & Yujiro Takahashi [Bullet Club]
Tetsuya Naito, EVIL, SANADA, BUSHI & Shingo Takagi [Los Ingobernables] v. Minoru Suzuki, Zack Sabre Jr., Taichi, Yoshinobu Kanemaru & El Desperado [SZKG]
Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kazuchika Okada [CHAOS] & YOSHI-HASHI [CHAOS] v. Jay White, Bad Luck Fale & Gedo [Bullet Club]

Tsunami Hits Eastern Coast of Japan; NOAH Bumper Crop 2022 in Sendai 1/16/2022: 11 Wrestlers Pulled From Show; NJPW Strong Episode 74 - 1/15/2022; NJPW v. NOAH WK16 On NJPWWorld & Wrestle Universe; DG, STARDOM, DDT, TJPW Results
The single biggest piece of news today is a tsunami hitting eastern coast of Japan after the underwater volcanic eruption off the coast of Tonga sent tsunami towards Japan, Tonga, Hawaii, the West Coast of the USA, and other parts of the Pacific. Nearly 230,000 people were evacuated from the seaside parts of Iwate, Miyagi, Chiba, Tokushima, Kagoshima, Aomori, Kochi and Miyazaki Prefectures, with warnings in effect all the way from Hokkaido to Ogasawara and Okinawa as well. Boats were capsized and flights were cancelled as well. The warnings seem to be off now, and casualties & damage seem relatively few especially compared to the 2011 Tohoku tsunami. We wish everyone affected by this to be safe and unharmed.

 New Japan Pro Wrestling
This week’s edition of NJPW Strong continues the Nemesis tapings from LA from December.
Karl Fredericks & Kevin Knight d. Bateman & Misterioso [Stray Dog Army] (Fredericks > Misterioso, MD, 10:04)
Brody King [AEW] d. Dave Dutra (Gonso Bomb, 6:31)
JONAH d. David Finlay Jr. (Tsunami, 8:20)
The New Beginning USA ran last night in Seattle, but I won’t be listing those results here, as I normally do not, opting instead to wait until the shows air on NJPWWorld.
Wrestle Kingdom 16 in Yokohama Arena is now on both NJPWWorld AND Wrestle Universe, with each promotion’s own commentary teams on each feed, Japanese and English. Check this out if you missed it last weekend live on ABEMA.

Pro Wrestling NOAH
NOAH ran in Sendai today, apparently unaffected by the tsunami. You can see it now on Wrestle Universe. Two title matches headlined this show. Several matches were affected by positive COVID-19 tests, or exposure to said cases. NOAH did not specify who on this list tested positive or were merely exposed, save to say Masato Tanaka was absent due to “poor physical condition” although a PCR test was negative. Kaito Kiyomiya, Yoshinari Ogawa, Junta Miyawaki, Yoshiki Inamura, Super Crazy, Tadasuke, Daiki Inaba, Kinya Okada and Yasutaka Yano were listed as being dropped today for COVID-related reasons.
Bumper Crop 2022 in Sendai - 1/16/2022, Sendai Sunplaza Hall (Wrestle Universe)
NOSAWA Rongai, YO-HEY & Kotaro Suzuki [Perros del Mal de Japon] d. ALEJA, Hao & Nio [Kongo] (YO-HAY > Nao, Dropkick, 8:56)
Atsushi Kotoge & Hajime Ohara d. HAYATA & Yuya Susumu [STINGER] (Kotoge > Susumu, Kill Switch, 11:50)
Daisuke Harada d. Seiki Yoshioka [STINGER] (Katayama German Suplex Hold, 12:07)
Daisuke Harada & Hao [Kongo] d. Nio & ALEJA [Kongo] (Harada > ALEJA, Katayama German Suplex Hold, 9:59)
Takashi Sugiura, Kazushi Sakuraba, Kendo Kashin & Kazuyuki Fujita [Sugiura-gun] d. Go Shiozaki, Masakatsu Funaki [M’s Alliance], King Tany [Funky Express] & Muhammad Yone [Funky Express] (Fujita > Tany, Powerbomb, 18:54)
GHC Tag Team Championship: Keiji Muto & Naomichi Marufuji [M’s Alliance] © d. Kenoh & Manabu Soya [Kongo] (Muto > Soya, Frankensteiner, 20:55) - Muto/Marufuji succeed their 2nd defense
GHC Heavyweight Championship: Katsuhiko Nakajima [Kongo] © d. Masa Kitamiya (Vertical Spike, 28:40) - Nakajima succeeds his 4th defense
Nakajima wins, and declared “WE (Kongo) ARE NOAH.” Kazuyuki Fujita challenged Nakajima to be his next defense, and that match is booked for Gain Control in Nagoya 2/23/2022 in Aichi Nagoya Congress Center Event Hall. Yuck, Fujita.
Muto pins Soya, and suddenly it’s early 2010s AJPW or Wrestle-1 all over again. I do not know the circumstances behind the tag match that followed Harada v. Yoshioka, save that they probably needed to do something to fill the card what with 11 wrestlers out.
NOAH next runs on Saturday 1/22/2022 from Osaka EDION Arena 2nd Arena. I won’t list the card here as I am planning an Upcoming Events post tomorrow, however with EVERYTHING going on, maybe safe to assume not all matches going forward are going to be happening as scheduled. Year Three of this pandemic, and we really should all expect this now.

Dragon Gate
Dragon Gate ran some spot shows the last couple of days.
Open The New Year Gate 2022 – Final Burst Out! K-Ness Forever Night 6 - 1/15/2022, Ishikawa Kanazawa Distribution Center
YAMATO, Dragon Kid & Keisuke Okuda [HIGH-END] d. Kzy, U-T & Jacky “Funky” Kamei [Natural Vibes] (YAMATO > Kamei, Galleria, 11:47)
BxB Hulk [R.E.D.] d. Ryu Fuda (Facelock, 4:53)

Dragon Dia & Yuki Yoshioka d. Ben-K & Kagetora [HIGH-END] (Dia > Kagetora, Reptillian, 12:05)
2 v. 3 Handicap Match: Takashi Yoshida & Kota Minoura d. KAI, Shun Skywalker & HYO [R.E.D.] (Yoshida > HYO, Pineapple Bomber, 12:15)
The main ended up being a handicap match due to Naruki Doi registering a fever before the show. However, it seems that Kota Minoura now has fallen in with Doi/Kong’s new nascent unit. Prior to the show, Eita & Kaito Ishida, recently removed from R.E.D., were boycotting the event and stormed out fo the area. You can watch it here.
Open The New Year Gate 2022 – Final Burst Out! K-Ness Forever Night 7 - 1/16/2022, Shizuoka Act City Hamamatsu
Kzy, U-T & Jacky “Funky” Kamei [Natural Vibes] d. Dragon Kid, Ben-K & Keisuke Okuda [HIGH-END] (Kzy > Okuda, Running Elbow Smash, 11:20)

Takashi Yoshida, Kota Minoura & Jason Lee d. KAI, BxB Hulk & HYO [R.E.D.] (Yoshida > HYO, Pineapple Bomber, 11:07)
Kong keeps up his winning streak on his way to challenging for KAI’s Open The Dream Gate title. Jason Lee and Kota Minoura continue to partner up so no animosity there post-MASQUERADE! R.E.D. are not in good shape since the beginning of the year, and especially after what happened Wednesday. Shun Skywalker had to beat up a rookie to get his first win as an R.E.D. member. Doi was kept off today’s show.
The next show is another spot show, in Nagoya tomorrow.

World Tag League 2021 & Best Of The Super Juniors 28 Night 12 - 11/29/2021; TJP Falls to Volador in CMLL Title Match, Challenges Hair v. Hair; New Beginning USA Strong Taping Set for 1/15/2022 in Seattle; Eddie Kingston v. Gabriel Kidd Added to Nemesis
Tumblr media
The tour continued today, and you can see it now on NJPWWorld.
- 11/29/2021, Tokyo Korakuen Hall
Ryohei Oiwa TLD Kosei Fujita (10:00)
Best Of The Super Juniors 28: Ryusuke Taguchi d. DOUKI [SZKG] (Pinfall, 11:39)
Best Of The Super Juniors 28: Robbie Eagles [CHAOS] d. BUSHI [Los Ingobernables] (Ron Miller Special, 12:52)
Best Of The Super Juniors 28: YOH [CHAOS] d. Taiji Ishimori [Bullet Club] (Five Star Clutch, 13:33)
Best Of The Super Juniors 28: SHO [Bullet Club] d. Master Wato (Referee Stoppage, 15:02)
Best Of The Super Juniors 28: El Desperado [SZKG] d. Yoshinobu Kanemaru [SZKG] (Pinche Loco, 15:10)
Best Of The Super Juniors 28: El Phantasmo [Bullet Club] d. Hiromu Takahashi [Los Ingobernables] (Sudden Death, 23:14)
ELP beats Hiromu with the loaded superkick, and gave a warning to Jay White that he planned to be in a big spot at the Tokyo Dome as Bullet Club’s “future.” Hiromu now has a pretty tough road to hoe in order to make the finals after two consecutive losses. YOH gets a third consecutive victory whilst his former partner remains sole leader. Kawato is dead last and I fear that might be where he stays.
Current BOSJ28 standings:
SHO - 12pts (6W 0D 1L) Despy - 9pts (4W 1D 2L) Taguchi - 8pts (4W 0D 3L) Kanemaru - 8pts (4W 0D 3L) Ishimori - 8pts (4W 0D 3L) Hiromu - 7pts (3W 1D 3L) Eagles - 6pts (3W 0D 4L) BUSHI - 6pts (3W 0D 4L) ELP - 6pts (3W 0D 4L) YOH - 6pts (3W 0D 4L) DOUKI - 4pts (2W 0D 5L) Wato - 4pts (2W 0D 5L) Friday night at Arena Mexico, TJP challenged Volador Jr. for the NWA World Historic Welterweight title, and lost, meaning TJP seems to be not much snuff when not teaming with Jeff Cobb in CMLL. Post-match, TJP challenged Volador to a hair v. hair match, but we will see if that ever happens. Apuestas are challenged all the time in CMLL, rarely are they ever acted upon except at special shows. TJP appears to be done in CMLL for now, but he could return sooner than later.
Two quick notes from NJoA:
The New Beginning USA 2022 will be on 1/15/2022 at Washington Hall in Seattle, WA. Tickets are already on sale. This is an NJPW Strong taping, but no matches have been annouced yet.
Eddie Kingston returns to NJoA, facing Gabriel Kidd at the Nemesis Strong taping now.
The tour continues tomorrow, with Round 6 of the World Tag League.
- 11/30/2021, Tokyo Korakuen Hall
Yuto Nakashima v. Ryohei Oiwa
World Tag League 2021: Minoru Suzuki [SZKG] & TAKA Michinoku [JTO] v. Bad Luck Fale & Chase Owens [Bullet Club]
World Tag League 2021: Yuji Nagata & Tiger Mask IV v. EVIL & Yujiro Takahashi [Bullet Club]
World Tag League 2021: Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma v. Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI [CHAOS]

Strong Style Story Podcast Episode 63 - Farewell to Manabu Nakanishi & Tiger Hattori
Tumblr media
We’re back with another episode of the Podcast on the Pro Wrestling Only Podcast Network!
The New Beginning cycle of shows is over, and Geoffrey Wessel & Chris Damasceno are here to gush about Jon Moxley v. Minoru Suzuki... and talk about Tetsuya Naito's gusher as well. We also discuss the retirements of both Manabu Nakanishi and referee Tiger Hattori this week, talk the major announcements of Wrestle Dynasty at Madison Square Garden, World Pro Wrestling being on prime time TV starting in April, and NJPW's first proper tour of Hokkaido in seven years (including a city they've not run in *22 years*). Plus, the FITE TV NJPW GIF debacle, Mania Weekend stuff, and a lot of All Japan Pro Wrestling talk for some reason...
Thanks for listening, and check out the other fine shows on the Network as well!

So I’m sure that was a fun night out. I would be very surprised if Narita got any offense at all on Cobb. I still would very much like to see Yano/Cabana v. the Rock & Roll Express.
The final show of this tour takes place Saturday night in Atlanta, a great wrestling town if ever there was one. There is a main event title match to round out the tour, as well as some other fun house show type matches. I probably won’t get to this until Sunday morning. See you then.
