You may be asking why the Qashqai comparison with the likes of Toyota’s Highlander and the general’s Terrain? A) I thought the Qashqai would be competitive in gas consumption with the other two with its smaller size, B) It’s quickly becoming Nissan’s top dog in sales with just under 9,000 units sold in June of last year, coming close to the Rogue which still holds the title.  C) It’s new to our shores (having been available to the rest of the world for over a decade and setting sales records wherever it went) and D) The subcompact crossover (hatchback) market is booming and there’s a lot of competition chasing the consumer’s dollar and finally E) Because it was there and I wanted to get my grubby little hands on it.

Sharing design cues with its larger sibling, the Rogue, has almost guaranteed the Qashqai’s success.  Actually the design looks even smarter on the smaller version. Like most wagons in this category the Qashqai comes in front or all-wheel-drive iterations. If you’re commute is mainly through the urban centers, the Qashqai’s 4.4 metre overall length should be appealing.  Agility is the hallmark of this cute ute, and despite its size, it still offers a comfortable, stable ride thanks to the four wheel independent suspension. I would have preferred a more responsive steering but I doubt that the average driver will notice.

Power comes from a 2.0-liter DOHC inline four cylinder that produces a scant 141 horses with 147 lb.ft. of torque. Sadly it’s the only engine of choice, elsewhere in the world diesels are part of the options list. My front-drive base S came with a 6-speed manual transmission, which sadly is not available throughout the trim line. My SV came with Nissan’s Xtronic Continuously Variable automatic with manual shift mode.  The 6-speed made up for the ponies and was able to work the torque more to its advantage than the CVT. Unfortunately the manual isn’t up to Nissan’s usual spec when it comes to easy, precise shifting and with higher revs on the pike, the manual lost to the CVT in fuel efficiency.

Which leads me to the point of this article. I managed to eek out 8.8L/100kms with mostly highway traveling on the standard tranny equipped front wheel drive and got a surprising 7.9 with the all-wheel-drive, CVT equipped SV with the eco mode switched on whenever I didn’t need to pass anybody, and the SV was under winter driving conditions.   

 The Qashqai’s greenhouse is a nice place to be even with winter’s worst being thrown at you. Controls are logically laid out and simple enough to operate without having to take your eyes off the road. Dual zone climate control is available even on the base model but the rear seat passengers get A/C vents beginning only in the SV trim. Fit and finish of the materials may just be the best in class. 

A 5.0” infotainment screen is standard but you won’t get Apple CarPlay or Android but hey, life still goes on. A rear view monitor, heated seats are also standard across the board as are power windows and a tilt/telescopic steering wheel.

If there’s a downfall to the short size, it comes in the form of rear passenger legroom, particularly if they’re on the tall side. Still cargo space aft of the rear seats is a generous 22.9 cubic feet, enough for a week’s worth of groceries for the entire family or two large size suit cases. Need room to haul the flea market find home?  With the rear 60/40 seats folded, that number grows to 61.1 cu.ft.  Choose the moonroof and stowage drops to 53.0 cu.ft.

Hits and Misses

I’ll start off with the misses as I don’t want top leave the Qashqai on a sour note. There’s few things to be disgruntled about, the warmish heated steering wheel may have been a quirk to my tester but my biggest gripe is about Nissan’s use of what seems like recycled Ford windshield wiper system. Press the windshield washer and after the windshield is clean an additional wiper swipe results in dirty windshield. Ford surrendered the notion but Nissan seems to be holding on to it. Petty until you experience it…again and again after each wash.

There’s a lot to like about the Qashqai including the entry-level price. I’d opt for the base car with 6-speed and get the all wheel drive option for my driveway. There’s a real foot operated parking brake, so yes it’s a REAL emergency brake when you need it and not just a quasi electronic gadget with a fancy name.  The engine/cabin are surprisingly quiet for a vehicle its size.

Oh and the name, it’s named after a conglomeration of nomadic mountain clans in southwestern Iran that travel to and from their highland pastures.

Diesel, hybrid or gas

There you have it, three very different vehicles of varying sizes with almost similar gas mileage ratings, within a couple of liters per 100kms. Which is the best, well that depends on your driving habits, or more precisely how much you drive and how much are you willing to invest in going green. The hybrid will set you back the most in initial cash outlay but if you put on a lot of miles it may pay off in the long run. At the opposite end of the clean air spectrum is the diesel with the gas counterpart somewhere in between.
