Chinese Auto Brand Chery Raises The Bar With Tiggo Range
Tumblr media
The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro - the big brother of the Tiggo 4 Pro - is one of those few remarkable newcomers to the market. It’s really difficult to fault, and deserves consideration on its own merits, rather than just its price tag. It competes with Toyota RAV4, Renault Koleos, Haval H6 and Nissan X-Trail and Qashqai.
The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro is perhaps the most-European Chinese car out there at the moment, with a decidedly Germanic driving experience and similar attention to small details. I know we still drive the badge but look at Haval. They literally disrupted the local market with a good product and aggressive marketing. Some buyers are realising that a premium name isn’t really worth that much extra money, anyway – especially when the alternative is so agreeable! The Chery Tiggo feels almost European in concept and execution. Only at a much, much lower price.
Styling
With a classy mix of sharp edges, lean surface detailing, and pronounced but neatly-integrated character lines, the Tiggo 8 Pro cuts a surprisingly upmarket dash. While styling cues from other manufacturers can be detected, it all meshes into a harmonious whole that still manages to look quite distinctive. The “starry night” grille is large and imposing, and it looks like nothing else out there. Flanked by squinting, slim LED headlights and underscored by large air intakes and silver skid-plate detailing, the Tiggo 8 Pro has an assertive front end and drew compliments from all onlookers.
In fact, the Tiggo 8 Pro’s appearance was praised from all angles, with the Audi-like detailing in the LED tail light clusters and sequential indicators getting particularly widespread approval. The 18-inch alloy wheels with their diamond-cut finish also received positive feedback.
Overall, the appearance is about as attractive as a mid-sized SUV could be, enhanced on our test car by the intriguing metallic/pearl purplish-blueish-blackish paintwork and well-integrated trim strips. And, crucially for Chery, the Tiggo 8 Pro also looks quite a bit more expensive than it really is.
Interior
The seats are astoundingly put together and upholstered in super-soft, medium-brown leather with classy-looking diamond-pattern stitching. There are matching brown inserts in the door cards and on the dashboard as well, giving a consistently upmarket ambience to the cabin.
The seats themselves are superb, and easily accommodated this writer’s 1.93-meter frame in supple comfort. Particularly noteworthy are the “wraparound” head restraints, which evoke the seats you’d enjoy on a business-class flight, and adds something more to set the Tiggo 8 Pro’s cabin further apart from the herd.
Oddment stowage for the front seats is generous, with voluminous door bins and cubby holes, cupholders, a refrigerated centre armrest/box (with various configuration options and two USB ports), and a split-level centre console. While there’s no oddment space in the piano-black upper portion of the console, the lower level houses a convenient and fairly deep tray, as well as a wireless charging pad.
The other seats are pretty comfortable, too, with lots of cabin space and a large measure of adjustability for the second seating row. These seats can slide (in a 60:40 split) fore-and-aft, and features individual backrest angle adjustment as well, thus allocating space between the rearmost two seating rows.
If the second row is set midway between its extremes, there’s even decent space in the third row to accommodate two average-sized adults back there. This is unusual, because the 6th and 7th seats in vehicles of this type are generally only suitable for smaller occupants, and then only for short trips.
Other comfort concessions for the rear cabin include a separate air-con system with its own compressor, fan, and lots of integrated air vents. This is only fitted in high-spec “Executive” trim as tested, however, the base “Distinction” trim makes do with a mere 2-zone climate control system.
In 5-seater mode, the cargo area is cavernous, with up to 892 litres available in a luggage compartment that’s wide, deep and long.
Obviously, this takes a hit when the third seating row is erected (via simple but sturdy pull-straps), as the luggage space drops to only 193 litres in this configuration. On the upside, rear privacy glass is standard and helps to keep the contents of the cargo hold hidden from prying eyes.
As for the cabin’s design, it again mirrors some upmarket influences in its styling and detailing. There’s some Mercedes in the front door cards and a fair bit of BMW and Audi in the dashboard. But, yet again, it doesn’t look like a mash-up as much as it looks like it borrowed from the best in the business, before integrating it all into a homogeneous whole.
The build quality comes with high-quality material and fine finishes evident almost as far as the eye could see. Sure, the switchgear doesn’t feel as solidly weighted as you’d find in an Audi, for instance, but it comes so close that most occupants won’t ever notice. And, while the lower dash and door cards are trimmed in hard plastic, it’s well-made and didn’t emit a single rattle or squeak in a week’s worth of driving.
Standard equipment
Let’s start with the screen setup. In front of the driver is a digital instrument cluster, measuring 12.3-inches in size. This is a bit excessive, really, because the cluster’s graphic design contains lots of blank space.
It’s easy to read, but the absence of a customisable driver’s display is a bit of a let-down: Allowing a driver to choose different display styles should be easy enough for a system with these capabilities and resolution, and the “revolving drums” which indicate speed and engine revs can become distracting after a while. Perhaps a future software update will eventually allow more options, but for the moment, this is a strange omission on the Tiggo 8 Pro’s spec sheet.
Performance and driving impression
The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro is powered by one of Chery’s award-winning turbo-petrol engines with direct injection and intelligent control.
The 1.6 TGDI was lauded in the China Heart engine competition for its high-tech design, which allows the engine to reach previously unheard-of levels of efficiency that benefit both power and fuel consumption. As fitted to the Tiggo 8 Pro, the 1.6 TGDI delivers a maximum power output of 145 kW at 5 500 rpm and a solid 290 Nm across a notably wide powerband between 2 000 rpm and 4 400 rpm. The engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (7DCT) that delivers power to the front wheels.
To best utilise the power and smooth engine characteristics, Chery has tuned the electric power steering system for improved feedback and has added Standard, Eco and Sport driving modes. The steering further offers Eco and Sport driving modes, where the feedback and feel of the steering system adjust to the driver's intent.
Safety
The full house of standard features continues when the safety specifications are examined. Executive trim includes a plethora of add-on safety features, to go with the Tiggo 8 Pro’s standard package of 6 airbags, a 360-degree camera system, rear parking sensors, stability control, emergency brake assist, rear ISOFIX child seat anchors, and a 5-star C-NCAP crash test rating.
That camera system is particularly impressive, and is on par with the top-shelf systems which are generally offered as options with most premium-branded SUVs. The display quality is crisp and easy to interpret, the dynamic reversing guidelines are intuitive, and it can even be set to automatically show the view down the car’s side when turning the steering wheel in either direction.

Mitsubishi RVR: the forgotten jewel
Words and pics by Michael Hozjan
In another lifetime I had a 1972 Dodge Colt station wagon. It was my first car with real heat (having had several Beetles before that) and it served my well, very well. Monday to Friday it took me to work and back, when spring came around you’d find me at the local drag strip on Friday nights going up against…and winning, anything they put in the other lane. On weekends I’d throw on a roof rack, fill up the back with building materials and head up into the hills to attack my new cottage project.
Why am I rambling on about a Colt wagon in a Mitsubishi RVR review? Simple, that Colt had a Mitsubishi engine and was the American version of the Mitsubishi Gallant. It was also  was my first real exposure to Japanese engines, and it was bulletproof.
Tumblr media
One thing I’ve always said about Mitsubishi products, “Great engines but loud cars as they lack noise insulation.” Well I’m pleased to say that after several years of absence behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi product, their entry-level SUV, the RVR proved me wrong.
Tumblr media
Over 1.3 million RVRs have been sold in 90 countries over the years, yet RVR moniker doesn’t exactly come to mind on our shores when thinking about subcompact/compact SUVs and crossovers. That’s really too bad, because the little Mitsubishi has a lot going for it, including one of the best warranties in the industry, and with nine years under its belt, it has a proven reliability history, and is affordable!
Yes it’s got some noteworthy competitors in the segment; Hyundai Kona, Honda HR-V, Toyota C-HR, Nissan Qashqai, Ford EcoSport, Chevrolet Trax and the Jeep Renegade but the RVR betters more than one. Mitsubishi has upped the anti with this year’s model refresh.
Tumblr media
The 2020 RVR gets a clean facelift from the front door pillars forward, including LED lighting and the new corporate grille. Chrome shark gills on the front fenders now serve as the basis for the side crease line while the rear has been reworked to give the RVR a more robust look. Likewise, the interior has been upgraded with new materials and colours, and of course the must have of must haves, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility via the standard 8-inch touchscreen.
Yes it still rides on the same RVR platform and uses the same engines that have been around since 2011, and yes the nine-year old chassis still offers a ride and handling that outshines most of the others in the niche market. Proof that Mits engineers were ahead of the game all along and holding true to the old adage of  “why fix it if it ain’t broke”, and isn’t that a testament to a well thought out design, if it’s still clean and fresh nine years later.
Head office has shuffled their trim levels to improve its value proposition. Two front wheel drive models serve as entry points with the base ES starting at $22,998 and base all-wheel drive version (ES AWC) coming in at  $25,298. Sadly the extinction of the manual transmission (another Mits stronghold) continues. I couldn’t have won all those races with a CVT!
Two naturally aspirated four-cylinder engines are offered, a 2.0L and a 2.4L. The first offers 148 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque, while the bigger one, only available on the SE AWC trim ($27,997) or higher, pumps out 168 horsepower and 167 lb-ft.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My top tier GT AWC (priced at a hair under $34,000), came with that bigger engine and the lockable 4WD system – a rarity not only in this size segment but with larger sport utes as well. Regular readers will recall that it’s one of the features I’m looking for in our replacement of the family X-Trail which too, has a locking system. Simply put you can switch from a conventional front-bias reactive system where the vehicle is front-wheel-drive, engaging the rear wheels when slip is detected, which ultimately improves gas pump stops. At the push of a button, AWC locks all four wheels for preventive all-wheel-drive.
The RVR’s cabin is roomier than most other subcompacts, with a panoramic roof adding to the airiness. Visibility is very good all around.
Tumblr media
Whether we’re talking steering wheel mounted controls or dash controls they’re large, simple, straightforward and easy to use. Great ergonomics make it shine in a world where everything has been overblown and over thought, and of course you’re not paying for a rolling gadget wagon.
Tumblr media
I did get pampered with the GT’s 710-watt Rockford Fosgate punch audio system with 9 speakers and the trunk mounted subwoofer. There’s 20 cubic feet of cargo space with all the seats in position and just under 50 cu. ft. with the rear seats folded.
Tumblr media
On the road the 2.4 L moved the crossover about nimbly delivering smooth and linear power. Acceleration is decent as long as you don’t mind the CVT’s whine –turn up the 710 watts. The steering wheel mounted paddle shifters added to the fun factor. The chassis offers just enough stiffness to allow for some sporty antics and sooft enough to cushion washboard roads and city potholes. In fact it’s close to having one of the best rides in the category.
Tumblr media
I averaged 9.0 L/100 km during my week-long ride with mostly highway driving. Hampered no doubt by winter warm ups and plowing through the powder.
If someone were to describe a vehicle to you as being affordable, built to last and fuel-efficient, equipped with all-wheel-drive and backed by an industry-best warranty, you’d be silly to dismiss it as an option, and the 2020 Mitsubishi RVR deserves to be taken seriously by those in the market for a subcompact SUV.
Tumblr media
Yes the RVR has some well-known serious competitors in the segment. What do they say when you’re number two you try harder, well when you’re number five you’ll try even harder. Truth is Mitsubishi doesn’t need to try harder, at the risk of repeating myself, it already has an affordable fuel-efficient, reliability proven SUV with an industry-best warranty. The problem is getting the word out.
Consider yourself warned.

2019 Nissan Qashqai Review
Utility vehicles have been multiplying like rabbits on the market in recent years – this is news to no one by this point. From Nissan, we’ve seen two of them introduced in our market: the Qashqai and the Kicks. Not only that, the two models sit in the same category, that of subcompact SUVs.
However, the Qashqai is slightly larger than the Kicks, plus it offers all-wheel drive. What it also is, is very, very popular among consumers. We take a look at why.
Neutral
Neutral but effective - the Nissan Qashqai for sale is one of those vehicles that grow on you, in other words. It might not stoke the flames of passion, but what it offers is a respect-based partnership, let’s say.
 Format
This crossover is pleasing enough to look at but it’s no head-turner. On the other hand, it is fairly easy to recognize, thanks mainly to the V-shaped grille that is a Nissan signature.
Perhaps the most distinctive element of this models is its size – as mentioned, it’s an in-betweenie. Which means it fits like a glove on the needs of those for whom the X-Trailis too big.
Most significantly, the interior space available to occupants is roughly similar to that found inside larger models. It’s a little bit tighter in the second row, but it’s not a major loss. Where you do lose noticeably is in terms of cargo space: the Qashqai offers 1,730 litres of it. But 1,730 litres in the sub-compact-plus category is a lot. Really a lot. Neither the Honda HR-V, renowned for its interior roominess or the Subaru Crosstrek offer as much.
Which sums up the basic definition of the Nissan Qashqai for sale: a small-format SUV but spacious enough for five.
 Versions
Three trims are offered for the 2019 Qashqai at Group  1 Nissan: S, SV and SL. The first two work with a front-wheel-drive configuration but with AWD available as an option, but the latter gets that as standard.
Let’s be clear, the Qashqai is a recommendable product on its merits, but at that kind of price, well no. The sweet spot for this model, in my view, is an SV trim with all-wheel drive priced.
 Comprehensive list of equipment
That said, is spending that kind of dough on a smallish vehicle is no barrier for you, the list of stuff you get with the Qashqai is pretty long. There’s the power sunroof, for one, as well as anti-fog lights, heated steering wheel, navigation, voice recognition, auto-dimming rearview mirrors and 9-speaker Bose audio system. The last two of those goodies come standard with the Platinum package.
Once again, it’s worth your time to list out your needs and priorities.
 Fuel economy over fun
To get the most pep out of that engine, you have to get aggressive with the accelerator. It’s a more pleasant experience when you’re working with the base model’s standard manual gearbox, and that’s because otherwise you’re dealing with a competent but soul-sapping CVT (continuously variable transmission).
A bit more power would be nice, obviously, but remember that the main purpose of this vehicle is not to catapult you off the line. Fuel economy is the keyword here, and in that respect, as usual with a Nissan, it’s mission accomplished. The official numbers for the Qashqai are 9.1L/100 km (city) and 7.6L/100 km (highway). In our week of real-world driving, we wound up with an average of 8.3L/100 km.
 At the wheel
I used the word neutral earlier, and that’s because it perfectly sums up the drive this crossover delivers. The steering is a tad too assisted, the braking a bit spongy, the suspension on the soft side, etc. But again, as long as driving pleasure is not high on your priority list, you’ll be satisfied with what you get from the Qashqai because what you get is reassuring and competent.
As bonus, the interior is actually comfortable.
In terms of safety, the product offering varies from trim to trim, but the most important element that stuck out for me was the vehicle’s performance in an obstacle avoidance test carried out by a Swedish testing firm.
In the video published by the firm, you get a great view of the vehicle as it weaves from left to right without any fuss or muss. According to the testers, the Qashqai was best in class in this test.
For any consumer that’s a rock-solid argument in its favour, in our view.

The Best Cars for Dog Lovers
Tumblr media
We’re a nation of pet lovers and dogs need a lot of attention. The bigger the pooch, the more exercise and days out it requires for good health and vitality. Walks in the county and on the beach are great, but you’ll need a sturdy and spacious vehicle to get you there.
Whilst we’ve looked at how to keep dogs safe in your car during the heat of the summer, what about the best vehicles for keeping them comfortable on the road? In this article we explore the top cars that offer for a smooth ride on long journeys with robust interiors so you and Rover can arrive in style, where-ever you’re going.
What to look for in a dog friendly car
The following attributes are non-negotiable in our opinion when it comes to carrying dogs in your car:
Hard-wearing – dogs can chew and scratch upholstery and surfaces, and even a good tail wag can sometimes be quite damaging to more fragile interiors. Ideally you’ll want a strong cabin space preferably lined with vinyl that can be wiped clean. Leather is the next best option, but this isn’t quite as scratch proof as vinyl.
Size – your dog will want to be able to move around, pad out, curl up and sit around in the back of your car. Ideally you want a large enough space for bigger dogs like Labradors and Huskies, whilst you may want to consider a dog carrier if your pug or dachshund is dwarfed by your cavernous boot.
Comfort – it’s not only us humans that enjoy features like heating and climate control. Wet dogs on cold days will love the warmth, and air con will help them breathe easy on the hottest days. Believe it or not even tinted windows can help keep your dog cool by reflecting the sunshine away.
Legal requirements
According the Highway Code, Rule 57 states that animals in vehicles must be restrained in such a way that they cannot cause a distraction to the driver or injure themselves if the vehicle stops suddenly at speed. It goes on to state that seat belt harnesses, pet carriers, dog cages, dividers and bars are the best way of achieving suitable restraint.
If your driving is erratic and dangerous because of a dog in the car, then the police can stop you, fine you up to £2,500 and award 9 penalty points for driving without due care and attention. And if your dog causes an accident whilst you’re behind the wheel this could even invalidate your insurance.
Our choice of cars
We’ve used our motoring skills and knowledge of the market to hunt down the best cars out there for pooches. Naturally we’ve gone for those rugged rides with spacious boots to handle trips to the country with room for man’s (and woman’s) best friend in the back. Here’s the list…
Volvo XC90
Tumblr media
This rather punchy SUV can take up to 7 passengers and has a luxurious interior to match the sleek lines of the exterior’s profile. You’re looking at a fuel-efficient engine to help with those trips out to the beach and rear climate control can help keep the car cool on the warmest days for the panting passenger in the back. And speaking of the boot, there’s an optional divider to separate the cargo area, which is a welcome break from the dog bars.
Nissan Qashqai
A real big car favourite that packs a 430 litre boot, which whilst not the most spacious on our list, still gives you plenty of room for Rover. You can lower or raise the boot to help the dog jump into the car, and the boards can be flipped to expose easy wipe surfaces. It’s comfortable, a joy to drive, and as a mid-sized MUV this means it can handle the country car parks on even the wettest days following a good walk. Optional extras include a rather useful dog guard.
Honda CR-V (2006-2012)
This boxy Honda has plenty of storage pockets, allowing you to keep leads, dirty balls and towels stashed away. Get more space for the bigger hound with folding rear seats, which is useful if you own a Great Dane. The long flat floor is generous to say the least, and the low boot sill will allow even the littlest hobo to jump up on its own legs into the vehicle.
Ford S-Max
Tumblr media
One of the Ford family’s largest vehicles and a great option for couples with kids. You get 7 big seats and even with a bum popped on each one there’s still 285 litres in the back for a large woofer or two small sub woofers – and yes, we’re not talking about speakers. More dogs than kids? No problem simply fold down two seats and increase the space to 700 litres or get rid of the seating in the back for over 2000 litres. Perfect for a whole husky pack. Then when you’re out on the road, the soft comfortable ride is great for humans and animals, and a low boot sill completes the picture.
BMW 5 Series Touring
Perfect for taking out the pedigrees to the country home estate. It’s a bit more on the wallet than others on our list, but you will feel like a lord or lady riding out with the hounds in this classy, refined and well equipped motor that’s a hell of a lot of fun to drive. Believe it or not, the 2.0 diesel that forms the heartbeat of the 520d is powerful and cheap to run. The 570 litre boot has no lip giving dogs a little more ease when it comes to entering the vehicle, and space for 2 good sized doggies.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate
A definite favourite among dog lovers who like a quality car. We’re talking a comfortable ride, luxury finish, great manufacturing and cutting edge technology. Great for long journeys and a very relaxing drive, with a 670 litre boot space that’s big enough for most dogs, featuring a big opening for easy access. Some models even benefit from air powered suspension, which makes lowering the rear even easier for older and more tired paws. Get a diesel for the best cash to power ratio.
Peugeot 308 Sportswagon
This French Estate car has a whopping 660 litre boot, perfect for Alsatians, Rottweilers and other big dogs. In fact there’s more room in the back for hounds than humans. The optional rubber floor is perfect when you don’t want to worry about transporting Rex after he’s jumped in the river or pond. Low running costs mean more cash in your pockets for doggy chews, and a great safety rating and good ride keeps man and canine alike safe from harm.
Dacia Logan MCV
Tumblr media
Affordable choice. Loads of car for your cash and rugged choice for a dog loving family. 573 litres in the standard boot or over 1500 litres with the seats down gives you enough room for a St Bernard. Easy to clean and robust for the wildest dogs, if you are worried about the odd bite mark or a bit of slobber on the seats. Good comfort levels as long as you don’t push the speed too much, and best of all there’s an optional pet kit that comes with boot-liner, divider and even a foldable dog bowl.
Land Rover Discovery
Get out and about in the country with ease to find those picturesque walk spots right through the year in the Discovery – although you’ll find many of these fine cars simply escorting poodles and pugs around Chelsea. A big car for the biggest dogs with over 1,000 litres in the back, air suspension and a split tailgate makes it the perfect choice for dogs that might normally struggle to get in the back. And with the HSE and HSE luxury trim you can even lower back seats with your phone to give man’s best friend even more room. Finally there’s options a plenty with boot-liners to protect from muddy paws and even dog ramps for littler legs.
Skoda Octavia Estate
Eastern European engineering that could carry a wolf with ease, whilst still giving you an interior on par with a BM3 series or Audi A4 Avant. The 610 litre boot could hold 2 dogs with comfortably, and you can even get a dog seat belt as an optional extra. Price holds well so expect to pay a little more on the second hand market. And if you want great fuel economy for those UK based holidays with the doggy then the 150hp diesel is the best bet.
And Finally
There’s plenty of choice out there for good boys and girls to travel round and get the exercise you and they both need. Which means there no reason to ever get hung up on a particular second hand car as there’s always another you can purchase.

2020 Nissan Juke bring Quirky BACK 👀 ______________________________________ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ [9/3/19] Nissan has unveiled their 2020 Nissan Juke that actually doesent look that bad and has a shockingly nice interior for a Nissan product. Starting outside is an all new Juke design language with slimmer LED headlights, a new two tone roof design, and more smoother and agressive lines than the weird bubbly design of the past. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🏁 @Allcarnews Spec sheet: Thankfully or Unfortunately, the Juke won’t be coming to the US market as of now and with this current powertrain, that’s not a bad thing. The new Juke packs a tiny 1.0L Turbo 3 cylinder making just 117HP paired to a 7 speed DCT or a 6speed manual to FWD or AWD. 🏁 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One of the largest improvements is the increased interior space with rear legroom being increased by 2.3in, 15cu ft of cargo space and the all new tech and interior materials! A new 8in touchscreen is present introducing the new Nissan Connect software brining the brand into this decade finally in terms of technology! The Juke also now gets a load driver assistance systems through ProPilot assist and the interior gets leather and microsuede material in upper trims. ________________________________________ ACN EXTRA: Maybe if it had more power I would take it any day over the Kicks. ________________________________________ -Text by @allcarnews -Images by Nissan ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #Nissan #Inline3 #Juke #NissanJuke An #allcarnews post // #Japan #JDM #Crossover #Kicks #Rogue #Qashqai #SUV #tuned ||#powerful #performance #turbocharged #supercharged An #allcarnews post https://www.instagram.com/p/B19h9cKnNLd/?igshid=1xttrol4edw11

2017 Nissan Rogue Sport First Drive Review: Rogue, But Less So
It is a common, if somewhat lazy, marketing technique to give a new product an old name in order to provide it with an instant boost of recognition in the marketplace. In the case of the Rogue Sport, such name loaning is at least halfway accurate: Nissan’s new small SUV is essentially a shrunken version of the existing Rogue. With a foot less length and a couple hundred pounds less curb weight, the Rogue Sport’s mission is to give Nissan a beachhead in the lively subcompact SUV segment.
But when you get to the second half of the name, accuracy goes out the window: The Rogue Sport is no sportier than the regular (and decidedly unsporty) Rogue. The acceleration is just as pokey and the steering is just as numb, though the chassis does have that same faint underlying hint of brilliance. Should you decide you can be bothered to push this wee crossover hard into the corners, the Rogue Sport might surprise you with its composure and agility—provided it hasn’t already numbed your senses with its anesthetized helm and droning CVT.
But the Rogue Sport does have other, admittedly more pedestrian, charms. The Rogue Sport only loses 2.3 inches of wheelbase to its big brother, and it’s also about a half-foot longer stem to stern than most of its subcompact competitors. That translates to a surprisingly habitable back seat with reasonable room for adults—provided the front-seaters don’t ram their own seats all the way back. Cargo space is still useful at 22.9 cubic feet, with a removable floor panel that provides hidden storage. The back seats fold flat. No surprise that the Rogue’s optional third-row seat is not offered in the Rogue Sport, but we do wish the reclining rear seatbacks carried over.
Read our Big Test comparison of 2015-2016 subcompact crossovers right here.
Most other interior hardware is shared with the Rogue—the dashboard, steering wheel, and seats are virtually identical. For the most part, that’s a good thing: Just as the Rogue is based on the European-market X-Trail, the Rogue Sport is based on the Qashqai. Both are positioned as upscale vehicles, and that shows in the quality of the materials and the switchgear.
But what’s almost shocking is the Rogue Sport’s lack of infotainment technology. Android Auto? Nope. Apple CarPlay? Nuh-uh. How about a USB port for the back seat? Of course not, and how dare you ask! You’ll get one USB port, and you’ll like it. We’re sure this will go over great with the hordes of tech-weary millennials who are looking to get away from their portable devices and simplify their lives.
Another oddball aspect to the Rogue Sport is fuel economy. The Rogue Sport gets a smaller engine than the regular Rogue, a 2.0 liter four-cylinder that develops 141 hp and 147 lb-ft (as opposed to the 170 hp/175 lb-ft 2.5 in the big Rogue). EPA fuel economy estimates for the Rogue Sport are 25/32 mpg city/ highway with front-wheel drive and 24/30 with all-wheel drive—numbers that are 1-2 mpg worse than the regular Rogue and well behind competitors such as the Honda HR-V (27/31 in automatic/AWD form). Our prediction: Someone in Nissan’s engineering department is about to have a very unpleasant performance review.
One area where the Rogue Sport chalks up points against the Honda HR-V and Buick Encore (and equals the Mazda CX-3) is advanced safety hardware. Automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control are all on the options list, which is the good news. The bad news is that those features are only optional on the top-of-the-line SL model, and will set you back a tough-to-swallow 30 grand.
That leads us to the Rogue Sport’s pricing in general. It could be a problem. With MSRP (including destination fee) ranging from $22,380 for the basic front-drive Rogue Sport S to $31,625 for an AWD SL with all of the options, the Rogue Sport rings up one to three grand more expensive than the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3, Chevrolet Trax, and Jeep Renegade. Perhaps Nissan will market the Rogue Sport as a tweener: Bonus space compared to subcompact crossovers, better value than the compacts like RAV4 and CR-V.
Now this review might lead you to believe that we dislike the Rogue Sport, but that’s really not the case. Obviously, we’re not in love with it; if there’s a curvy road ahead, we’d much rather be at the wheel of a Mazda CX-3 or a Mini Countryman. But for the kind of driving most of us do most of the time—long freeway cruises, cramped suburban shopping centers, and urban rush-hour traffic—the Rogue Sport is a rather pleasant companion. It’s comfortable, quiet, maneuverable, and generally unobtrusive, the same formula that is propelling the regular-size Rogue to ever-higher sales heights. No matter what you think of the new Rogue Sport, you should at least credit Nissan for giving it a halfway-accurate name.

Part 3: Nissan Qashqai
Text and Photos by Michael Hozjan
You may be asking why the Qashqai comparison with the likes of Toyota’s Highlander and the general’s Terrain? A) I thought the Qashqai would be competitive in gas consumption with the other two with its smaller size, B) It’s quickly becoming Nissan’s top dog in sales with just under 9,000 units sold in June of last year, coming close to the Rogue which still holds the title.  C) It’s new to our shores (having been available to the rest of the world for over a decade and setting sales records wherever it went) and D) The subcompact crossover (hatchback) market is booming and there’s a lot of competition chasing the consumer’s dollar and finally E) Because it was there and I wanted to get my grubby little hands on it.
Tumblr media
Above: The All-Wheel-Drive SV
Sharing design cues with its larger sibling, the Rogue, has almost guaranteed the Qashqai’s success.  Actually the design looks even smarter on the smaller version. Like most wagons in this category the Qashqai comes in front or all-wheel-drive iterations. The Front-Wheel-Drive comes in two trim models starting with the S at $22,063, dish out another $2,700 for the SV and you’ll get larger 17” shoes, Intelligent Emergency Braking, blind spot warning and rear cross traffic alert. Opting to go with all-wheel-drive versions, the base S will cost you $26,963 but will give you the safety package previously mentioned and heated seats. The AWD version of the SV and my first tester, comes with 17” wheels, power moonroof, remote starter with intelligent climate control and the wonder of winter mornings, a heated steering wheel, or should I say semi-heated as mine just never really seemed to warm up enough.  The AWD SV will net you $29, 463. The top-of-the-line SL is available only in AWD and ads 19” wheels, intelligent cruise, leather seats and birds eye view camera for $32,363.
Tumblr media
Above: The base front-drive S
If you’re commute is mainly through the urban centers, the Qashqai’s 4.4 metre overall length should be appealing.  Agility is the hallmark of this cute ute, and despite its size, it still offers a comfortable, stable ride thanks to the four wheel independent suspension. I would have preferred a more responsive steering but I doubt that the average driver will notice.
Power comes from a 2.0-liter DOHC inline four cylinder that produces a scant 141 horses with 147 lb.ft. of torque. Sadly it’s the only engine of choice, elsewhere in the world diesels are part of the options list. My front-drive base S came with a 6-speed manual transmission, which sadly is not available throughout the trim line. My SV came with Nissan’s Xtronic Continuously Variable automatic with manual shift mode.  The 6-speed made up for the ponies and was able to work the torque more to its advantage than the CVT. Unfortunately the manual isn’t up to Nissan’s usual spec when it comes to easy, precise shifting and with higher revs on the pike, the manual lost to the CVT in fuel efficiency.
Which leads me to the point of this article. I managed to eek out 8.8L/100kms with mostly highway traveling on the standard tranny equipped front wheel drive and got a surprising 7.9 with the all-wheel-drive, CVT equipped SV with the eco mode switched on whenever I didn’t need to pass anybody, and the SV was under winter driving conditions.
Tumblr media
The Qashqai’s greenhouse is a nice place to be even with winter’s worst being thrown at you. Controls are logically laid out and simple enough to operate without having to take your eyes off the road. Dual zone climate control is available even on the base model but the rear seat passengers get A/C vents beginning only in the SV trim. Fit and finish of the materials may just be the best in class.
Tumblr media
A 5.0” infotainment screen is standard but you won’t get Apple CarPlay or Android but hey, life still goes on. A rear view monitor, heated seats are also standard across the board as are power windows and a tilt/telescopic steering wheel.
If there’s a downfall to the short size, it comes in the form of rear passenger legroom, particularly if they’re on the tall side. Still cargo space aft of the rear seats is a generous 22.9 cubic feet, enough for a week’s worth of groceries for the entire family or two large size suit cases. Need room to haul the flea market find home?  With the rear 60/40 seats folded, that number grows to 61.1 cu.ft.  Choose the moonroof and stowage drops to 53.0 cu.ft.
Tumblr media
All interior pictures are of the base truck
Tumblr media
Hits and Misses
I’ll start off with the misses as I don’t want top leave the Qashqai on a sour note. There’s few things to be disgruntled about, the warmish heated steering wheel may have been a quirk to my tester but my biggest gripe is about Nissan’s use of what seems like recycled Ford windshield wiper system. Press the windshield washer and after the windshield is clean an additional wiper swipe results in dirty windshield. Ford surrendered the notion but Nissan seems to be holding on to it. Petty until you experience it…again and again after each wash.
There’s a lot to like about the Qashqai including the entry-level price. I’d opt for the base car with 6-speed and get the all wheel drive option for my driveway. There’s a real foot operated parking brake, so yes it’s a REAL emergency brake when you need it and not just a quasi electronic gadget with a fancy name.  The engine/cabin are surprisingly quiet for a vehicle its size.
Tumblr media
Oh and the name, it’s named after a conglomeration of nomadic mountain clans in southwestern Iran that travel to and from their highland pastures.
Diesel, hybrid or gas
There you have it, three very different vehicles of varying sizes with almost similar gas mileage ratings, within a couple of liters per 100kms. Which is the best, well that depends on your driving habits, or more precisely how much you drive and how much are you willing to invest in going green. The hybrid will set you back the most in initial cash outlay but if you put on a lot of miles it may pay off in the long run. At the opposite end of the clean air spectrum is the diesel with the gas counterpart somewhere in between.

2017 Nissan Rogue Sport | Why Buy?
2017 Nissan Rogue Sport | Why Buy?
{$inline_image} 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport | Why Buy?
– Detroit, Michigan
It’s a familiar story across car segments: As the mainstays grow to offer more room for passengers and cargo, there’s space for automakers to slide a smaller vehicle underneath them in the model range. For Nissan, that meant importing the hugely popular Qashqai to the U.S., renaming it Rogue Sport, and offering it as the…

Road Tests: The 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport
Vital Statistics
Engine: 2.0 liter
Horsepower: 141
Torque: 147 lb-ft.
0-60 mph: 10.0 seconds
1/4 mile: 17.6 seconds @ 79 mph
EPA: 24 mpg city / 30 mpg highway
Energy Impact: 12.2 barrels of oil/yr
CO2 Emissions: 5.4 tons/yr
You could argue that Nissan played a big part in jumpstarting the whole subcompact crossover mania with their funky 2011 Juke.  Well, I guess one entry isn’t enough, as they’re doubling down on that crowded segment with the Rogue Sport. Let’s see if this one jives just as well.
The 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport may be small in size, but Nissan knows there are big sales to be had in the wildly popular subcompact crossover segment.
But, first things first. The Rogue Sport is not a smaller version of the compact Nissan Rogue crossover. It is actually a completely different vehicle. It’s our version of the Nissan Qashqai which is quite popular elsewhere, especially in Asia.
The imported Rouge Sport is 2.3 inches shorter in wheelbase compared to the Rouge, but a full foot shorter overall.
Its shorter stature, combined with the unimproved roads in many of its markets, translates into a rougher ride than the U.S. made Rogue. On the other hand, it’s size is perfect for scooting around crowded cities and fitting tight parking spots.
That’s where it shines most since in automotive lexicon, “sport” in the name mostly means a smaller version of something; as there’s not a strong amount of performance to be had in the Rogue Sport. Still, it feels solid and capable for a ute of this stature.
While different in design, the Sport still has a strong resemblance to big brother Rogue, from the aggressive V-Motion grille, to the swoopy hatchback-like rear with wrap around lighting. The body sides are more dynamic, as is the black cladding below.
Standard wheels are 16s, with 17s and 19s in upper trims.
Surprisingly, build quality inside is not quite as good as the Juke, and the materials make even the base Rogue look borderline luxury. But having said that, the Rogue Sport is far more practical than the Juke, with much roomier seating, as well additional space for cargo; 19.9 cubic-ft. behind the folding seatbacks, and 53.3 with them folded.
Gauges are simple and clear, just as we prefer them to be, and all but base trim gets push button starting.
Infotainment works quite well with a nice, compact, easy-to-master control layout and very responsive touchscreen, which can include Navigation. A basic backup camera is standard, with Nissan’s Around View Monitor available.
In addition to being fairly spacious for such a small package, we found seating both in front and rear impressively comfortable.
Unlike many in the segment, including their own turbo-powered Juke, Nissan sticks with tried-and-true naturally aspirated power here.
A familiar 2.0-liter I4 outputs just 141-horsepower and 147 lb-ft. of torque; and being saddled with a CVT, only adds to its sluggish feel. Front-wheel-drive is standard, with all-wheel-drive available on all trim levels.
Indeed, anemic output and CVT trans are not on any car guy’s wish list. Our full throttle 0-60 run took a full 10.0-seconds. The ¼-mile, 17.6 at just 79 miles-per-hour. Engine noise was pronounced, sounding like a 2-stroke running on Red Bull.
The CVT does go through simulated shifts, which in daily driving keeps engine noise tolerable.
Our track impressions changed for the better on the handling course. Through the tight gates, there was decent grip and a very confident feel. Steering was a touch slow and on the disconnected side; but the Rogue Sport does what its told without much fuss.
That’s all thanks to a 4-wheel independent suspension with stabilizer bars and twin-tube shock absorbers; as well as Nissan’s Active Trace Control which uses selective braking to help pivot you around corners.
We had no issues with braking performance either. Stops from 60 averaged just 114-feet; with short, firm pedal travel, and on overall quality feel.
Basic safety systems are standard, but you’ll have to step up to mid-level SV trim to add Forward Emergency Braking, and top SL if you want Lane Departure Warning.
Government Fuel Economy Ratings with all-wheel-drive are 24-City, 30-Highway, and 27-Combined. For a slightly better than average Energy Impact Score of 12.2-barrels of yearly oil consumption with 5.4 tons of CO2 emissions.
Pricing starts at $22,380; about $1,000 over the Juke, but around 3-grand less than a Rogue. All-wheel-drive adds $1,350 more.
As hot as the Rogue has gotten of late, outselling even the Altima to become Nissan’s number one selling vehicle; a scaled down look-alike is a no brainer, even with the funkier Juke still in the lineup. The 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport is more of an economy-minded effort, but one that’s big on entry-level practicality. We think it’s right sized at the right time.

What is it?
Nissan’s oddly named Qashqai started life in 2008 wearing the Dualis moniker.
The small SUV competes in one of the hottest segments of the Australian market where it goes up against no fewer than 25 brands and dozens of variants, all trying to tempt the buying public.
Fortunately for Nissan, the Qashqai well-and-truly holds its own.
Sales figures for November show only Mitsubishi’s somewhat elderly ASX and Mazda’s CX-3 outsold the Nissan.
Almost a decade after its launch the wagon has just entered a third generation.
The diesel has been dropped and the only power plant is now a naturally aspirated, direct-injection 2.0-litre petrol engine that’s good for 106kW of power and 200Nm of torque, the latter from 4400 revs.
While Nissan claims a fuel consumption figure of 6.9L/100km, we achieved 8.2L during the national media drive program.
The name by the way is taken from a largely nomadic group of pastoralists in Iran that comprises a conglomeration of clans.
Now you (and I) know.
  What’s it cost?
The new front-wheel-drive-only Qashqai range opens with the $26,490 six-speed manual ST (CVT auto adds $2500).
Next up the pecking order is the CVT-only ST-L, with its $32,990 price tag, followed by the N-TEC (CVT) at $36,490.
The N-TECH will be replaced in the middle of next year by the Ti and will tip the scales at $37,990.
For this test, we selected the ST-L, which given its impressive inventory of standard kit, looks to be the pick.
ST-L’s list of goodies includes: 18-inch alloys, LED daytime runners, an electric parking brake with auto-hold function, cruise control, six-speaker audio with digital radio, rear-view camera, intelligent engine braking, heated electric folding mirrors, satellite navigation, heated front seats, and an intelligent around-view monitor with moving-object detection.
Also standard are fog lights, roof rails, a shark-fin antenna, Bluetooth audio streaming, a rear roof spoiler and a combination of leather and graphite-cloth seat trim, and of course, air conditioning.
With all of this – and more – it’s hard to see anything at the price that can match it.
The latest model features styling tweaks, handsome new alloys, classier interior trim, intelligent emergency braking with forward-collision warning, revised suspension settings, enhanced safety credentials and a reduction in noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).
Climb behind the wheel of the ST-L and you’re immediately struck by how classy the interior looks.
There is a blend of mostly soft plastic with with just enough highlights to enhance things visually.
The front seats are beautifully shaped with sports-car-like bolstering that really supports the driver and passenger, even during the tightest, most enthusiastic cornering.
Even the rear bench seat has some subtle bolstering for added comfort and support.
With a height-and-reach-adjustable, sporty-looking, leather-wrapped wheel and plenty of power adjustment for the driver’s seat, dialling up the perfect driving position is a cinch.
Getting behind the wheel for the first time you immediately become aware of the excellent driver ergonomics, with just about all controls for air and the 7.0-inch touch screen perfectly positioned.
Families will find plenty of storage options for bits and pieces.
These cubby holes include a good, deep glove box, an equally deep two-level bin beneath the centre-console armrest, four bottle-friendly door pockets, front-and-rear cup holders, two open bins in the centre console and a small one at the back for the rear-seat passengers.
There are also map pockets behind the front-seat backs but no roof-mounted holder for sunglasses.
With the rear seats occupied, there’s 430 litres of cargo space – fold down the rear seats and this rises to 1598 litres.
For added cabin practicality, the rear-seat backs split 60:40.
  What’s it go like?
Out on the road the improvements in NVH are immediately noticeable.
Like pretty-well all four-pot engines, under aggressive acceleration, Qashqai’s “four” screams a bit – but most of the time you’re hardly aware of its presence.
Road and wind noise are also kept to a minimum at cruising speeds.
There is improved noise sealing for the front doors and thicker rear-door glass and the car’s drag co-efficient has been reduced from 0.33 to 0.32.
On a drive program that started and finished at Melbourne airport and was based out of Daylesford, we got to test the Qashqai on a variety of good and bad bitumen roads, as well as a stretch of rough bush gravel.
The car rides on a MacPherson strut front suspension with an equally independent multi-link rear arrangement.
Engineers at the company’s European technical centre have stiffened the anti-roll bar, locked in new spring rates and updated the dampers.
The result is a firmer, almost-sporty ride and as a result the car sits flatter during spirited cornering with hardly a hint of body roll.
The stiffer suspension makes the car a bit jittery on rough gravel and it certainly didn’t enjoy a couple of big potholes that my co-driver and I were unable to avoid.
One of the stand-out improvements is in the steering department.
The car is now fitted with what Nissan calls “active return control” that makes the wheel return more naturally to “top dead centre.”
Also on the ride-and-handling menu is intelligent trace control, a system that improves cornering control by applying the brakes to individual wheels.
Intelligent ride control also uses braking to enhance torque delivery after a bump, with adjustable steering that allows the driver to select his or her favourite feel – that is, sport or normal.
Qashqai’s CVT transmission has seven pre-programed ratios for use in manual mode . . . but that means using the stick because there are no paddles.
Most drivers will probably just leave it in “drive” and they’ll find it perfectly adequate.
It does however “flare” noticeably under hard acceleration.
Because of this, and the car’s modest 200 Nm of torque, don’t expect too much when it comes to overtaking.
That said, in manual mode, down-shifts are especially slick and seamless.
Safety-wise, the ST-L scores a five-star ANCAP rating .
  What we like?
Classy interior
Handsome body styling
Top-line safety credentials with autonomous emergency braking now standard
More overall refinement
  What we don’t?
CVT not one of the best
No rear-seat air vents
Stingy 3-year warranty
No Apple CarPlay or Android Auto
Space-saver spare
  The bottom Line?
It’s hard not to like the Qashqai. It’s very much an around-town vehicle with plenty of family practicality. Size-wise it sits between a small and medium SUV.
While the new Nissan cruises quite happily on the open road, but when it comes to overtaking something like a B-double – you need to make sure you’ve got plenty of clear road ahead to get the job done.
Qashqai loses diesel and all-wheel drive What is it? Nissan’s oddly named Qashqai started life in 2008 wearing the Dualis moniker. The small SUV competes in one of the hottest segments of the Australian market where it goes up against no fewer than 25 brands and dozens of variants, all trying to tempt the buying public.
