"You think that everything can be seen and touched and weighed and measured... You think you discovered reality, but you don't even know what it is."
Mora, from the very cool little 1961 movie, Night Tide. (Which is streaming for free on YouTube!) It's a movie that could actually do with a remake--as much as I like it as it is, there's so much more they could do with it given a proper budget and some fine-tuning.

"Yes, I love the sea most of all, but I'm afraid of it too." "Guess we're all a little afraid of what we love."
I liked the part with the seagull.
From its very first moments, Night Tide exudes a strong, moody tone, and a strangely dream-like quality which grabbed me. The noir-mystery atmosphere and bright, coastal setting meshed surprisingly well, and made for interesting viewing.
A very young Dennis Hopper struggled somewhat with awkward line delivery, but he managed to effortlessly bring a charming sort of naivety to the role, and his chemistry with Linda Lawson came across as wonderfully genuine. She gave an excellent performance as the alluring and mysterious maybe-mermaid Mora, evoking so much tragic sympathy.
There were many moments that stood out as memorable, like the smokey, subdued jazz club, or the breakfast date on that truly enviable apartment balcony. Mora's dance at the evening beach party, and the projection of her shadow against the cliff-face was a great segment.
The only part of the movie I didn't really enjoy was the ending, which I felt over-explained some things, removing much of the mystery in an unsatisfying way. I wasn't a big fan of the "consolation prize" romance either, which is a shame because Luana Anders gave a really good, likeable performance, but the writing just wasn't there to support that.
A compelling movie with a dark, intriguing atmosphere. Great, despite a weak ending.
