In Radz-at-Han, Vrtra (via Varshahn) is preparing to make his grand announcement.
I can feel his fear and trepidation; no less than this great calamity could have prompted him to reveal his secret, so afraid was he of his people rejecting him.
Tumblr media
It will be alright. They will see how much you care for them.
Tumblr media
It is a lovely speech. His people do not yet know him, but they will. And they are willing to extend the same trust to him that he extends to them in this moment. Together, they will get through this.
Tumblr media
That it would have. I hope that wherever she is now - the aetherial sea, or perhaps reborn? - that she knows where the path she started us down has led us.
Tumblr media
Oh great. These fuckers again.
Tumblr media
To his credit, Fourchenault recovers quickly when he discovers he's going to have to negotiate policy with a Great Wyrm. He quickly and succinctly gives a brief explanation of the Final Days, and what the Forum has been planning.
Tumblr media
...I am both surprised and relieved. It's clear I need to reassess my view of Sharlayan; I was convinced that, being so insular, they would only seek to rescue their own people. Fourchenault has risen in my estimation. Marginally.
Tumblr media
Vrtra will meet and discuss the details of this plan of evacuation with the Forum members in Meghaduta. I am heartened to learn that the decision will ultimately be up to the individuals to decide; Vrtra truly is a good leader.
Tumblr media
Nidhana has caught up with us: she has a theory to share!
Tumblr media
Y'know, I asked that exact question when Y'shtola first said they didn't have any aether. Without it, how do they exist at all?
Nidhana's theory, then, is based on the fact that strong negative emotions trigger the transformation. She posits that akasa is the alternate energy that the beasts are animated by.
That... would make sense. Because my flower seems to be influenced by the same force, and...
Tumblr media
Aaaand it just exploded into black dust.
Well, if akasa is the force behind the flower's color-changing effect, then I think it's safe to say that there's something really fucked up influencing our surroundings right now.
*narrows eyes*
...Didn't Hydaelyn say that the flower would guide me? Or something to that effect?
That seems to imply... That Hydaelyn knows akasa is the force behind the Final Days. That She knew all the way back in Labyrinthos.
Why...
Okay, this doesn't make any sense. Because She may be incredibly frustrating, but She's not evil. ...Is She? That doesn't make sense either. She made the Loporrits out of love for us. She gave us a backup plan. If She knows what's causing the Final Days, why would She let us run about in circles trying to figure the answer out?? She must know about the akasa connection, because literally the only thing the flower does is react to it. Why else give it to me??
Is this like the Forum? Like. She literally can't tell me? But why? What rule could possibly constrain a being like Her?
This is... Really fucking fishy. I don't like this. I have a really bad feeling.
Tumblr media
Yeah. And now I don't even have the flower to guide me.
Tumblr media
Oh look I suddenly have a million (five) quests to distract me, better go do them...
Sadly the only classes I have at 90 are Sage and Paladin, so those are the only ones I can complete. Everything else I can only do up to level 87.
But, I did notice something curious while completing the Healer quest?
Tumblr media
Fordola clearly sees the soul of Charlet, the man who became the blasphemy, walk off to join those of their deceased friends... According to everything Y'shtola said, this should not be possible? There should be nothing left of his soul? And yet there is. I am leery of getting my hopes up, but maybe the souls of those changed are not completely destroyed after all?
A mystery...
Anyway. I have a dinner to attend.
Tumblr media
We have to remember, what we saw in Amaurot was end-stage. It is what is coming, but we still have time to stop it. Before things get that bad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And now we understand why half the star was willing to give up their lives to summon Zodiark, don't we?
Tumblr media
No, Y'shtola, you've got that backwards. Zodiark stopped the Final Days. Hydaelyn was the one who sundered everything in the process of subduing Him.
But, that's besides the point. Hydaelyn won't - I'm starting to suspect can't - tell us anything more. We're going to have to find our way from here without Her.
Tumblr media
This is why I need to stop solving all my problems with murder.
Tumblr media
What.
Tumblr media
...But it might. There might be some fragment of his soul still in the Crystal Tower. Well, goddamn.
Tumblr media
And so, I will go to the First. Y'shtola will seek to contact Hydaelyn in the aetherial sea. Alphinaud will rendezvous with the various world leaders and ascertain how far the Final Days are progressing. Estinien will--
Tumblr media
????
Emet-Selch?
Are you...?
Tumblr media
Hooooly Shit.
You can see me. You're not just narrating: you're watching me.
Tumblr media
...And you know something I don't.

Plit. Plit. Plit.
Y'zel shifted slightly, letting the rainwater bounce from his parasol. He started into the yard from a distance, hawkeyed gaze upon the lanky awkward figure of an Elezen as they tried to keep his cousin companion dry under the same umbrella. The Miqo'te frowned then turned, knowing lingering any longer would have him found.
-
Ribbit.
Fredrick hopped quickly as the screams of Khloe and G'khenna echoed through the haunted palace, followed by frantic blasts of magick from the latter. As the mi'kitten's footsteps came closer, he eyed the traps ahead, throwing himself on each one so the two could pass through the dungeon safely. Seeing the light Cairn of Passage light up for the girls, he let out relief before croaking as one trampled over him on their way to safety.
-
No. Mother…Father…
Alphinaud roused awake as Jullus called out in his sleep. He frowned, watching the other's face contort in the wake of his nightmare as he moved about on his cot. Quietly he scooted his cot away from his sister's and beside the Garlean. He was careful not to wake him, throwing the other half of his blanket atop the Jullus. He turned and rested his back against his comrade, letting their shared heat and pressure of the second blanket  calm the Garlean to stillness. The morrow would prove awkward, but the little bit of peace brought would be worth it.
-
Swive!
Violet sneered in the mirror as her obi came undone once more in her hands. Her attendant frowned, kneeling to pick up the silk cloth, loose grey hairs dangling down her face as she pet the fabric nostalgically. The reluctant princess paused, lowering to help the older woman back to her feet then turned with her arms outstretched to let herself be helped.
-
Huff…Huff…Huff
U'rahn wiped his brow as the Gyr Albanian sun bore down on him, catching his breath as his frenemy M'zhet glowered from beneath a rock. The day had been long, a game of King of the Rock exhausting them both. As he sat up on his throne, having yet to yield it to the other's attacks, he noticed the dark blush along the other's shoulders and cheeks, red from the sun. He crossed his arms, recalling the pain of his own sunburn and how it slowed him down to the point of being immobile. Nyx and G'raha showed him plants he could slather on himself to prevent that pain. Sighing, he slipped off his rock, letting the other claim victory while he went to grab some salve to lather the other in once he was done gloating.
-
Hmm…
Jannie hummed while she flipped through an old recipe book by W'orcestershire Tia.While  mainly credited for Archon Loaf and his namesake sauce, the pages offered many more entries detailing medicine turned food dishes inside, many far more appetizing than the one he had gained notoriety for.  She searched for anything that would help the Fortemps men get more Vitamin D, the Ishgardian weather providing little natural supplement for them. If worse came to worse, a vacation to La Noseca would again be on the horizon.
-
Achoo.
Fuyu'li wrinkled his nose, sinuses aching as he pounded some flowers into dust beside Nidhana. Together they worked on a salve to help ease the discomfort of Vrtra's exposed skin. The alchemist sighed as she watched the Miqo'te's face scrunch up, poised to sneeze again, stubbornly offering his assistance despite his allergies. Still, she couldn't help but think his little sneezes were a bit cute.

FFXIV Write Entry #15: Just Your Average Symposium
Prompt: row || Master Post || On AO3
“I had forgotten how lively the conferences are in Limsa Lominsa,” Nidhana said cheerfully.
On the stage where the panel was seated, the arcanist presenting had escaped her colleagues trying to hold her back to stumble forward and throw a punch at the professor from the University of Ul’dah. The hyur ducked and tackled the au ra to the floor, and then a full-bore brawl broke out between their colleagues. Synnove, at the moderator’s podium, threw up her hands in disgust. “Get the kiddos out of here!” she barked, and her fellow arcanists in the audience immediately began herding the first- and second-years out of the auditorium.
Varpasa snickered into her palm as Jalamuc covered his eyes, whistling mournfully through his trunk. “It’s a paper on the aetheric properties of pathogens and managing potential disease vectors, how in the world does one get into a fistfight about it?” the other Arkasodara said.
“Oh, please, like any one of us wouldn’t have lost our tempers being questioned so rudely,” Nidhana said, watching with keen interest as the front half of the room used Synnove’s distractedness, the Highlander now wading into the stage brawl with Tyr at her side, to devolve into a chaotic mess of debate. The lalafell academics were always the most vicious, so much rage compressed into such tiny bodies.
“Tobana and Ayleth have hated each other for years, too,” Mahruvvet said, on Varpasa’s other side. “How long has their “In reply to” chain stretched to now?”
“It’s at least ten,” Varpasa said, finally gaining control of herself.
Synnove had, of course, read the energy in the room correctly when she had demanded the removal of the youngest students, as the auditorium was quickly descending into bedlam. Any excuse for a debate, or a fight. Which was both, to academics.
And Lominsans preferred a fistfight. Honestly, it was such a better method; Hannish alchemists went to the explosives first a little too eagerly.
(Nidhana should not cast stones, she knew. Put her and her fellows from the High Crucible in the same room as a gaggle of adjunct professors from the University of Radz-at-Han, and there would be violence at some point, even if it was just a single bloody nose or trunk.)
A chirp caught all their attention, and they glanced down to see Galette sitting primly at Nidhana’s feet. Sorry, Nidhana, she churred, her mental ‘voice’ genuinely apologetic, could I use you as a lookout post? Mama needs me to check the paths to the exits stay clear.
“Oh, certainly, little one, I’m happy to be of assistance!” Nidhana said, bending down to scoop the carbuncle up and set her on her shoulder.
Galette chittered her thanks, ears flicking as her head whipped back and forth to scan the crowd. Such a lovely carbuncle; Nidhana still remembered that one conference over a decade ago where she had eaten half the dessert table at the buffet lunch on the third day when tempers were fraying and Synnove had to grab her carbuncle and flee the city entirely to escape the ire of the attendees. Of course, Galette was still willing and able to demolish an entire spread of desserts all by herself, but her self-control was much better these days.
On stage, Synnove had literally dragged Tobana and Ayleth apart; Tyr had flopped on Ayleth, the hyur snarling in outrage, as Tobana dangled in Synnove’s grip and struggled to break free.
The cacophony of everyone shouting and yelling and arguing all at once was incredible, and some of Nidhana’s cheer dimmed as the sound assaulted her. Synnove was shouting something herself, but she couldn’t be heard, and Nidhana saw her face twist before she gestured with her free hand to someone.
Ivar leapt onto the moderator’s podium, threw back his head, and howled.
The sudden, following silence seemed to echo, and the audience slowly turned to face the stage again, many visibly cringing with their shoulders hunched.
“Thank you, darling,” Synnove said to the ruby carbuncle, who puffed out his chest. Then the Highlander turned her head and leveled a glare on the audience. “You will behave or I will personally kick each and every one of your asses. Except the Hannish alchemists, you’ve been lovely. Please off Zarir for me.”
“Your shows are the best!” Nidhana called down. “And it’s called plausible deniability! None of us have it!”
Synnove waved in acknowledgement, and set Tobana back on her feet, pointing sternly to the Raen’s seat. The other woman grudgingly went to take it as Tyr dragged Ayleth back to hers.
Galette wiggled up to loaf on Nidhana’s head. I’m just gonna stay here, she chittered.
“Ate a tort you weren’t supposed to, didn’t you?”
…Maybe.
Varpasa started snickering again.

Platonic shipping ask: How would/do your ladies get along with Nidhana?
Dark: Amused, nodding along, she's the expert and an absolute sweetheart and delight and honestly someone should help hook her up with that nice fisherman cuz he will give her the adoration she deserves for being so brilliant.
So admiration and very impressed, friendly, not expecting to be noticed herself and having a moment of ' :o senpai noticed me' when she does.
Iyna: Nidhana's a scientist, way too smart for a grunt like me, and way too nice. Most of Thavnair is way too nice, how are these people so nice what is this???
Mostly a little stunned and an interested sort of suspicious, wary; Iyna takes time to relax and trust around genuinely kind and good people after her long and difficult history. Nidhana's enthusiasm about her work would make Iyna smile though.
C'oretta: OMG she is the coolest and so smart and really does have very nice eyes and I kinda wanna be her when I grow up I mean not a literal Arkasodara of course but how knowledgeable and respected and awesome she is and she figured out so much stuff and--
Basically C'oretta fangirls a bit, which Nidhana finds flattering and only a little weird, but C'oretta's energy fits right in with the alchemists of the Great Work, and while it's not the miqo'te's specialty, she can be willingly put to work helping out and it's a cheerful time for everyone.
Aeryn: A little starstruck at first, funnily; this is the woman in charge of the Great Work, works directly for the satrap, and while Aeryn's dealt with lots of important people, returning to Thavnair makes it a little different. She immediately relaxes around Nidhana, though, due to the woman's good nature and kindness and nerding out in a way Aeryn recognizes and understands.
They're nerd pals, and Nidhana's a sweetheart besides. Nidhana's help during the Final Days was invaluable--not just the theories of Akasa, but also the practical things like making people tea. It's grounding, and so appreciated in a friend.

Auraugust Day 27: Endwalker
Nidhana: Aether is an energy which permeates the land. It exists within animals, objects, and even the air we breathe, affecting all trough which it flows. Akasa, on the other hand, exists in a domain beyond our reach. A gift bestowed on high - or even torn from the heavens, in some traditions. Akasa can neither be created, nor destroyed. It is beyond our power to purposefully alter or manipulate. The only thing observed to influence it is an abundance of...I want to say “spiritual emotion.”
