[Valentine Idolizes You]
➼ Word Count » 0.5k ➼ Warnings » None ➼ Summary » Headcanons based on how Nick treats you once idolized.
Tumblr media
Starting off with the basics, he's gonna wanna hire you. He'll even offer you his bed in the agency, it's not like he sleeps in it anyway. You, him, and Ellie are gonna be the greatest group of detectives in the Commonwealth. Ellie can hold down the fort at home while you and Nick go solve mysteries.
If he hasn't seen you for more than 2 weeks, then, depending on how many cases he's working on, he's gonna go looking for you. He doesn't wanna come across as overbearing, but he's so concerned about losing you, he honestly can't help but want to ensure that you're alright.
That being said, he's always gonna be there for you. You need someone to talk to? Head on over to Nick's place, you were there for him with Winter and he'll gladly be there for you.
Expect a lot of moments where the two of you just sit in comfortable silence. Him looking over case files and you tinkering with your weapons.
Nick—especially around the holidays—will light a little campfire somewhere in the agency and the three of you (you, Nick, and Ellie) will just sit around and talk. It's one of his favorite past times. Just a nice, comfortable moment to take a breath and celebrate yourselves for all the work you've completed together.
Nick will be one of, if not the, most honest person you'll ever come across. He might soften it a bit but Nick will still tell you the truth, whether it's hard or not. He doesn't think he has it in him to keep something from you.
Nick has a habit of quoting pre-war media because he knows you'll understand the references.
If you have the Mysterious Stranger perk, he'll occasionally sit you down in his office and confide his findings with you. He wants to know what you think about him and every detail involving your interactions with the stranger.
Nick is naturally a more serious and sarcastic person, but he finds that he smiles a lot more when he's with you. Nothing big, but nothing too subtle either.
Whenever you meet someone new, Nick likes to interrogate them. He's like a dad in that sense. Again, he's worried he'll come off as overbearing, but he wants to make sure you're not being taken advantage of.
The kind of guy who teaches you how to tie a tie.
If you agreed to stay with him and Ellie at the agency, then he'll frequently ask if you want to go on walks with him around Diamond City. Domestic things like this make him feel at peace, especially when it's with someone he cares about.
Nick really likes to play blackjack with you and, unless you have a crazy good luck stat, he'll win every time. He, at the very least, isn't prone to bragging. It's one of the pros of playing any competitive game with him.
It’s hard to find, but when he can he’ll make you a cup of coffee. He technically doesn’t need it, but he can remember how much human Nick liked it, and you probably deserved it.
On days that aren't busy, Nick will turn the radio on and you’ll teach each other how to dance to certain songs until Travis mentions something that seems sketchy enough to look into.

Nick receiving oral headcanons? 😏😏😏
Yes 🙏
•Initially a little hesitant. He has memories of the “og” Nick Valentine definitely receiving this type of attention but he isn’t exactly him..well..you know. It really boils down to a certain sense of self consciousness. He’s painfully aware his body isn’t the typical kind. He doesn’t believe you’d judge him but it doesn’t stop him from judging himself. Give him some reassurance.
• After he gets out of his own head, he’s quite the appreciative receiver. Never one to grab hair, guide your head or anything. However those hands do get involved but it’s usually in the sense of him stroking your face or politely moving hair out of your way if needed.
•Gives an insane amount of praise. Like it’s sickeningly sweet but at least you’ll never have to worry if youre doing it right or not.
•Despite his praises, he isn’t all too vocal about Gen receiving. He tends to relax and ride the pleasure in the same style a versed smoker enjoys a smooth cigar.
•Always more than happy to return the favor in any way you choose 😉

Sweet Doesn't Mean Naive (Fallout Characters)
Fandom: Fallout 4 Scenario: The characters meeting and falling for a reader who is very sweet and helpful and accepting. Initially they may think the reader is naive because of their nature but soon learn differently. Pairings: Cait x Reader, Danse x Reader, Hancock x Reader, MacCready x Reader, Nick x Reader + Copper Howard x Reader.
Notes: Zero uses of Y/N or Sole. I may do a part 2 for the other characters later, these are just the ones that I'm super inspired for rn. [Also this is based on me never being able to select rude options in video games unless I genuinely hate the character lol]
Trigger Warning: These may be slightly OOC as I'm still familiarizing myself with the characters (more so the FO4 characters than Coop)
Cait:
Cait initially underestimates you, thinking you're too sweet and accepting to survive in the Wasteland. However, she's surprised when she discovers your savvy side, handling dangerous situations with intelligence and composure.
Your kindness and willingness to help others win her heart, and she admires your ability to adapt and thrive in challenging circumstances.
Cait falls for you deeply, realizing that your sweetness is not a weakness but a strength.
Danse:
Danse is initially cautious around you, expecting you to be naive due to your sweet and accepting demeanor. However, he's pleasantly surprised when he witnesses your quick thinking and resourcefulness during a perilous situation.
Your kindness and helpfulness earn his respect, and he admires your ability to handle yourself in tough situations.
Danse develops feelings for you, impressed by your combination of kindness and savvy decision-making skills.
Hancock:
Hancock is amused by your sweetness and helpfulness, initially thinking you might be a bit naive about the dangers of the Commonwealth. However, he's pleasantly surprised when you prove to be street smart and savvy in various situations.
Your accepting nature and open-mindedness capture his interest, and he admires your ability to see the good in people while still being aware of the harsh realities of the world.
Hancock develops strong feelings for you, fascinated by your unique blend of kindness and savvy insight.
MacCready:
MacCready is cautious around you at first, assuming you're naive because of your sweet and accepting personality. However, he quickly realizes that you're more savvy than you appear when you show exceptional skill in handling dangerous situations.
Your helpfulness and compassion make a lasting impression on him, and he admires your ability to adapt and survive in tough circumstances.
MacCready falls for you, drawn to your kindness and impressed by your hidden savvy nature.
Nick Valentine:
Nick initially sees you as naive, given your sweet and accepting demeanor. However, he's amazed when you display a keen understanding of complex situations and handle them with grace and intelligence.
He finds your kindness and empathy touching, and he admires your ability to see through people's facades while still maintaining your positive outlook.
Nick develops strong feelings for you, intrigued by your combination of sweetness and savvy awareness of the world around you.
Tumblr media
Cooper:
When you first met, Coop was fairly dismissive of you. He thought you were just going to get yourself killed fairly soon. Your generous nature was a sign of naïveté in his eyes. So he wanted as little to do with you as possible.
Then you gave him a months supply of vials for free. And he decided to stick with you. Deciding the best repayment was to protect you from the dangers of the Wasteland and yourself.
That's when he learned just how much he'd underestimated you. You were kind and always willing to help absolutely anyone but you were not one that could taken advantage of.
And that's what really impressed him. The more of your acumen that Cooper saw, the more he grew to care about you. Including your altruistic nature.

i think so often about nick celebrating his birthday on valentine’s day. he remembers his “real” birthday but it doesn’t feel quite right anymore because knows what he is, where he came from, and hell, he was never really “born”, was he? it’s just another reminder of the person he’s based off, the person he’ll never be, not really. just the plastic-skinned ghost of a dead man. he’s worked so hard to craft himself a new life out of the plastic-coated-metal hand he’d been dealt, but every year on that day he can’t help but dwell on the ghosts of his past.
but then the sole survivor comes along with their prewar notions and habits and holidays and maybe it comes up in conversation one night traveling across the commonwealth, sole huddled up close to the fire, a cigarette he can’t really smoke dangling from nick’s lips, and he lies and tells them he doesn’t remember. theyre shocked! he has to have something to celebrate!
february 14th rolls around that year. nick’s used to the jabs and jokes by the folk in diamond city, cliche as they are, and has grown to expect them with only the occasional snide comment in return. what he didn’t expect was to come back to his office after a long day of chasing dead ends to find a cupcake on his desk, icing just starting to melt, and a note.
happy birthday, nick.

Hi! Can I have the non-human companions' reaction to a male sole that is very protective of them? Like if they're at a bar and someone shouts "get out of here freak/bucket of bolts/etc" he's beating the crap out of them immediately and when he's done he just goes back to the said companion and is all caring like "are you ok? Do you need anything?" Djdjfnfnejjr p l e a s e I've had this idea for so long
Non-human companions will always have a special place in my heart (especially Hancock because characters from Goodneighbor will always be superior to me), so this ask is really fun! Besides, I'm pretty sure every Hancock or Valentine fan has sided against the Brotherhood just for this reason. Also I have a feeling I could be missing someone, since I almost forgot Codsworth and Strong, so please let me know if I am, I can just add them on lmao
//
Non-Human Companions React to M!Sole Being Protective (Includes: Curie, Codsworth, Hancock, Nick, Strong and X6-88)
Curie She insists that Sole didn't have to go to all that trouble for her, she understands that some people are bound to dislike her simply based on her appearance and although that can be disheartening, she's come to accept it. She's a little shocked by how Sole reacts, he's never been particularly violent if he can help it, but it's more how quickly his mood changes afterwards when he goes to check on her that catches her more off guard than anything. She can't help but feel touched by the gesture though, it's nice to know that there's someone willing to look out for her.
Codsworth The Commonwealth is a lot different than it was 210 years ago, Codsworth still remembers the days when people would clamour at the opportunity to have their very own Mr. Handy. Now, all he seems to be is target practice or scrap metal to the inhabitants of the wasteland. Nevertheless, that doesn't mean he's immune to how some people tend to treat him. While Sole's act of violence is quite concerning to him, Codsworth does find himself grateful that his old friend is willing to defend him against the abuse he's become accustomed to. Codsworth assures Sole he's fine and insists that he doesn't cause so much ruckus on his behalf, but he will make a point to thank him profusely for caring, even if he is just a robot butler.
Hancock While Goodneighbor is more than welcoming to people from all walks of life, Hancock isn't blind to the treatment of his kind outside the walls. He'd seen it with his own brother in Diamond City and Hancock wishes that he'd fought as hard for the exiled ghouls as Sole had just fought for him. The name calling doesn't bother him, really, he's heard it all before and he can handle himself. What catches him off guard is Sole beating the bigot that had insulted him to a pulp. He does figure that Sole might owe him one, considering Hancock had handled Finn for him the day they'd met. Still, he assures Sole that he's fine and clarifies that he can fight his own battles, not that the show Sole had put on wasn't entertaining to watch.
Nick Valentine Being around as long as Nick has, he knows what people think of his kind and sometimes it can be hard to blame them. The Institute are dangerous and they've taken countless lives for their own selfish gain, even though it's not his fault he has to walk around looking like their poster boy, he can understand why people might take out their frustration on him. Of course, that doesn't mean he isn't quick to bite back to defend himself. On this occasion though, Sole was quicker and much more vicious and Nick had barely managed to comprehend what had just happened before Sole was back at his side asking if he was okay. Nick was fine, as usual, and only might a slightly irritated remark about Sole using his words next time rather than his fists, before thanking him.
Strong He doesn't really understand the insult being thrown at him and, although he definitely will try to join in, he isn't too sure as to why Sole is attacking a random civilian. Once Sole has made sure that Strong is okay - which, of course, he is - and once he's explained what had just happened and why, Strong isn't particularly bothered, he knows Super Mutants are the superior race, the comments of a "puny human" won't change that.
X6-88 A snide remark from a worthless scavenger means absolutely nothing to him, but apparently it means a lot to Sole, who doesn't hesitate to give the scavenger a beatdown and make him apologise to X6. He decides to wait, rather impatiently, for Sole to be done, before asking that he doesn't cause such a scene again for something so meaningless. Deep down though, Sole knows that's his way of saying thank you.

apparently it’s my first year on tumblr so here are some overdue head cannons
- Danse could sleep in his power armor. In fact, he has. Completely upright nonetheless.
- Deacon loves the USS Constitution for some reason. He refused to tell Sole why. Be it the rockets or the history, he loves it.
- Gage knew Nisha under a different name. For the first few years after he left the settlement, he went by other names to avoid being sent back. He ran into Nisha when he switched from Caravan hand to raider. She didn’t remember him.
- Hancock knew Nick while growing up. He smoked his first cigarette on the ‘roof’ of Nick’s agency after stealing a pack of cigarettes laying around.
- MacCready has almost all the issues of Grognak the Barbarian. The only one he’s missing is the one Nate got the day before the bombs dropped. He also has all of the Unstoppables.
- Nick doesn’t sleep, but gets these little crashes when he’s been working too hard for a long period of time. Hence why Ellie wants Sole to help with cases.

Nick SFW Alphabet
➼ Word Count » 1.5k ➼ Warnings » None ➼ Genre » Romantic
A - Affection (How affectionate are they? How do they show affection?)
Nick shows his affection through his actions. You'll wake up to a cup of coffee, or a new pack of ammo. It's simple things that he does to show that he's looking out for you. You'll even notice that he does it more when he thinks you're going through something rough.
B - Best friend (What would they be like as a best friend? How would the friendship start?)
He's like an uncle you only see once a year. He's sarcastic, easy to get along with, and nonchalant about most things. Something bad happens to him and he'll just shrug his shoulders. That being said, he's really easy to talk to and has some of the best advice out there.
C - Cuddles (Do they like to cuddle? How would they cuddle?)
He's not a very physical person by any means. Just never knew what to do with his arms or where to place his hands. He's especially against the idea now that he's scrap metal. Even when you're lying in bed together, he tries to give you as much room as possible out of fear that you'll cut yourself on one of his parts.
D - Domestic (Do they want to settle down? How are they at cooking and cleaning?)
No. It's a nice thought, but what would he do with himself? He doesn't think he'll ever quit the detective business. He'll work till he drops. Regarding household chores, he's good with kids and keeping the utilities working, but that's the extent of his knowledge. The need for cooking left with human Nick, and Ellie usually organizes his files.
E - Ending (If they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?)
Quick and easy. He feels terrible about it, he really does, but you'd have to do something completely out of the left field for him to do so, so he wouldn't feel that horrible.
F - Fiance(e) (How do they feel about commitment? How quick would they want to get married?)
He's an old man, and because of that, he knows you shouldn't rush good things. Besides, there's no real benefit for you both getting married, but if you really wanted one, he wouldn't be against proposing to you. But know that he'd be fine without the ceremony as well.
G - Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?)
As gentle as he can be. He's well aware that his physical body is a bit rough around the edges, so he makes it a point to be as delicate as he possibly can around you. Emotionally, he's a bit harsher. He's an honest guy and likes to keep it 100% with everyone in his life. So, in that regard, he might be a bit brutish, but he means it out of love.
H - Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?)
There will never be a time when he initiates a hug. If you're in distress, he opts to comfort you through his words or by patting you on the back, but he'd never go out of his way to hug you. Again, he's terrified at the idea that he might cut you in some way. However, if you were to incite it, he'd reluctantly (and very gently) hug you back.
I - I love you (How fast do they say the L-word?)
He says it almost immediately after you get together, although he says it in a casual way rather than a serious one. You'll get a particularly clean shot on a raider, and he'll comment something like, "Doll, I love ya."
J - Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?)
He doesn't get jealous, but if someone's getting handsy with you, he'll be quick to intervene. He's protective, and if you look uncomfortable, then he's glad to come and put an end to whatever it is that's doing so.
K - Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?)
He always kisses your hands and your cheeks. He's got that old-school husband mindset when it comes to affection, and he likes to keep them modest, especially out in public.
L - Little ones (How are they around children?)
Amazing. He knows he can be a little off-putting to children, so he always does his best when it comes to first impressions. Luckily, he has tons of stories he can tell that'll keep kids curious and attentive, and they always end up loving Nick.
M - Morning (How are mornings spent with them?)
It's usually just you, Nick, and Ellie down at his Agency. Ellie always has a pot of coffee ready by the time you wake up, and then the rest of the time is spent reading files with Nick or gossiping with Ellie.
N - Night (How are nights spent with them?)
Drug busts, criminal chases, murders, missing person cases. Boston's nightlife never lets up and always keeps him in business. So, if you're up for it, he's got a lot you can help him out with during these hours.
O - Open (When would they start revealing things about themselves? Do they say everything all at once or wait a while to reveal things slowly?)
He opens up to you before you even get into a relationship. I feel like Nick would take his time when it comes to getting to know someone, and you'd have to have him all the way idolized before he even began asking you out.
P - Patience (How easily angered are they?)
The only way you could make Nick angry is if you did something horrendous. If you killed a child, then he'd be pissed and leave you. But otherwise, he'll hardly ever lose his patience with you.
Q - Quizzes (How much would they remember about you? Do they remember every little detail you mention in passing, or do they kind of forget everything?)
He remembers the important stuff. Your birthday, your favorite color, your favorite places to visit. It's like he's got a whole case open on you. However, things that include him he finds more easy to forget. He's always got to rely on Ellie to remind him when your anniversary is, but if it's solely you, he keeps it all stored in the back of his mind.
R - Remember (What is their favorite moment in your relationship?)
Any moment that he can. He loves thinking back on all those times when you two were just having fun throwing snarky comments each other's way while on a case.
S - Security (How protective are they? How would they protect you? How would they like to be protected?)
He keeps his pistol in his hand whenever you both are in a sketchier area and his coat around your shoulders when you're in a crowded bar. He's a gentleman, and, as such, he feels he needs to protect you whenever he can. Either physically or just by making others around you aware you're taken.
T - Try (How much effort would they put into dates, anniversaries, gifts, everyday tasks?)
He tries? Nick's not always the greatest at setting dates up, but he certainly puts in the effort. His go-to with dates is picking a place to take you and then seeing where it goes from there. There's not much thought put into it. It's just a nice, spontaneous night.
U - Ugly (What would be some bad habits of theirs?)
Overworking himself. There are a lot of moments when you'd like to hang out with him or simply just talk, but he's too wrapped up in his work to pay any mind to it.
V - Vanity (How concerned are they with their looks?)
He keeps himself in a shape where he can continue operating normally, but that's it.
W - Whole (Would they feel incomplete without you?)
Yes. In all honesty, you're one of the only things he has that his human counterpart hasn't. Being with you and knowing you give him a feeling of individuality that he never got before. So, if he were to lose you, he'd feel like he'd be starting all over again to work toward being himself instead of a pre-war stranger.
X - Xtra (A random headcanon for them.)
He writes poetry sometimes. It's not something he goes out of his way to show you, but he'll scrawl a few words down on a napkin and toss it into his drawer. He finds it to be a good way to get his thoughts out without actually going through any grueling writing process.
Y - Yuck (What are some things they wouldn’t like, either in general or in a partner?)
He doesn't think he'd mesh well with someone with violent tendencies or anger issues. It's just not what he's looking for, and is way too outgoing for him.
Z - Zzz (What is a sleep habits of theirs?)
He doesn't sleep. He works on cases or other chores all night while you do, though.

Thinking about that one interaction with Nick and Vadim where Nick goes "Vadim, we've been through this. Im not going to be your guinea pig...again." WHAT DO YOU MEAN AGAIN??? WHAT HAPPENED THE FIRST TIME??? i generally need to know, what do you think happened?
Listen- Nick is wild. There really is no telling what exactly went down but if i had to guess..on the account of him being synthetic and pretty much metallic- maybe Vadim wasn’t so careful with the ethanol concentration and Nick was like full on breathing FIRE. Idk, any theories on the matter are greatly appreciated. 💀

Thoughts on Fallout 4 companions after playing the game for a bit and reading a whole lot of headcanons and fanfic and reactions:
- Hancock said he didn’t want to look at this face in the mirror and decides to do a drug instead of surgery. That’s some real self-hate there.
- There’s so much self-flagellation
- One the same note, ghouls can’t go under surgery?
- Someone mentioned that quests for the minuteman could have been handed out by the Freedom radio, instead of Preston, so that more backstory could be given to Preston.
- Nick and Deacon we’re probably thought to be too old and they didn’t want it to be creepy of hooking up with an older guy…(sigh)
- That it’s easy to write Sole to be compatible with everyone, since the game allows you to role play that character in many ways.
- MacCready’s backstory is both endearing and weird (because of him not going to see his son). I think the people who made the game didn’t want to bother with coding him leaving for a bit and then coming back, but… really? Should have changed the background story a bit to at least add that he needs to stay in case the medication didn’t work (or something like that)
- Deacon since he changes his face and has seemingly traveled could be in another Fallout game, any of them…
- Since Deacon changes his appearance, you get more attached to his voice. (He also has some very interesting things to say.)
- That when Deacon changes his face, Dezdemona is there the whole to verify it’s still him.
- Nick rolls with the punches, and has a very good emotional IQ, moreso than any of the other companions. He’s so even keel emotionally, that the Far harbor expansion hits a bit harder, because that’s where you see more of His emotion.
- Piper would be the best to adapt to our world
- Majority of the ways people can become your companions is weird why they even offer. (Like why would Hancock travel with Sole and not another person who wasn’t part of quest to raid their warehouse? Doesn’t Piper have other stories to investigate? Doesn’t Deacon have missions to do? Why isn’t Strong following Rex Goodman around? Nick has plenty of other cases to just run around randomly)
- Paladin Danse says that he wasn’t sure about Sole but also highly recommends you join the Brotherhood. So which is it? Also, I only did like one big quest for them and I am given a power armor.
- Is the reason they complain about picking up stuff is that eventually they have to carry some of it?
- Ada is a good companion, but doesn’t offer a perk, hence the reason probably not talked about a lot because no reason to travel with her
- I don’t know why the institute is doing what they are doing
- I really wish they could mark the clothes that can go under a person’s armor.
- Why are people wearing scarves? Is it cold there because it never seems to snow.
- I find it interesting that the companions all generally know each other or at least the have swapping dialogs that make it seem that way. (Curie has literally been locked away for 200 years.)
- They have veritbirds but no land vehicles. There’s supposedly caravans, but no wagons? Would it be too dangerous to have that?
I probably have more, but that’s for now

Giggly Sleepyhead (Fallout Preference)
Fandom: Fallout 4 Request: x Pairings: Cooper x Reader, Danse x Reader, Hancock x Reader, Valentine x Reader Trigger Warning: Tooth rotting sweetness.
Cooper Howard
His reaction depends on a couple of different details, honestly.
Pre-War!Coop would just find you adorable and smile as he totes or leads you to bed.
He'd make you giggle some more, both accidentally and on purpose. And of course he'd tease you a little about it.
If you're together after he becomes a Ghoul, he's not as amused by it. He'd seem annoyed and huffy though the longer you're in your relationship the more his annoyed demeanor becomes an obvious act.
He'd roll his eyes and pull you closer to him with a groan but the corners of his mouth would subtly quirk up.
Danse
This man would definitely raise an eyebrow. Sure Danse is familiar with some people being giggly when sleepy but he doesn't really get it.
He's not really grumpy when sleepy but he is more no-nonsense.
Although he can't deny that you are kind of adorable giggling and grinning for little reason. And your giggly nature has taught him how to tell when you definitely need some sleep.
The second you start giggling more than normal, he'd make sure to get you to bed and no funny business.
And he's learned to choose his words very carefully when you're sleepy. Otherwise you'll be cackling for several minutes at any incidental double entendres.
Hancock
Oh he would definitely enjoy you being giggly when you're sleepy.
In fact he enjoys it almost too much. Absolutely revels in the knowledge and you're going to regret him finding out. In the best way of course.
He'd egg you on until you're clutching your sides and red in the face from laughing so much. You'd definitely end up out of breath.
Only then would he show you any sort of mercy and pull you onto his lap or closer to him if you're already in bed.
Then he'd start rubbing your back or playing with your hair and occasionally, usually right as your eyes close, he'd say something else that gets you giggling again.
Valentine
He's aware that some people get giggly when sleepy but nothing prepped him for you giggling at everything while struggling to keep your eyes open.
He'll set aside his work and usher you off to bed once he realizes what's going on.
He'll be shaking his head and suppressing a grin but he makes sure you're tucked in with a bottle of water nearby.
"If you don't stop giggling, I'll just have to read you all these reports and paperwork that I'm working on." It's a threat he ends up having to carry out every time.
And it works...almost every time. The more boring the reports, the quicker you nod off.

Fallout 4 really coulda made the 'Living by the sea' vibes so terrifying. Of course, people know of mirleurks and stuff. But what about the things they don't know about. The fear of the unknown.
We know that sea life was also affected by radiation. We've seen the size of a mirelurk queen. We know that sharks exist from the corpses.
So. How do we know megalodons aren't back in the Falloutverse. Or krakens don't exist. Sea life enlarged and at an unimaginable scale, unknown to the survivors of humanity as they lurk beneath the waters.
What if Sole had been told not to cross the ocean to Far Habour. What if there's a reason that, after 200 years, no one has brought back voyager boats and sailing the oceans to reconnect the world. What if they know better. Or maybe they realise they don't know anything at all.
What if Sole set up a nice base at Spectacle Island, and is confused when Hancock refuses to see it. Sole jokes that he's paranoid, but he reminds them he grew up on the waterfront. He helped his dad fish when he was younger. Boats don't scare him. The water doesn't scare him.
"It's what's in it," He explained coldly. He sat down in the sand, shotgun in his arms. Sole asked him to elaborate, he said he couldn't. "You wanna go after the Institute, fine. I'll help. That's an unknown I can handle. But, I ain't getting in that boat, and neither should you."
"I'll...Ask someone else."
"Can it be Danse?"
Sole thought he was being dramatic but quickly realised that none of the companions were keen to travel across the water.
There was that time Sole once jumped off the Prydwen and into the deep sea, so far from shore, only to hear a guttural noise around them. They couldn't see anything. The water dark blue, and filthy, almost black from when the world was scorched. But whatever it was, it was large enough that its voice vibrated through their entire being. They convinved themself it was a whale. They know whales don't sound like that.
On the days Sole is at the castle, they like to look out at the ocean. Or did, until today when they saw a large boat in the distance become capsized. They almost sent their own boats out to help, but Preston placed a firm hand on their shoulder. His eyes told Sole everything he wouldn't. Preston's not the type to let people die. So, Sole turned the radio up so none of the other soldiers could hear the distant screams for help and distress calls. And to drown out their own guilt, watching as the last fisherman attempted to swim desperately to shore, only to be dragged down below the waves. Sole didn’t look away until the boat finally sank. When they did, their eyes landed on the East Wall, which was under reconstruction from when the mirelurk queen had emerged. Sole wonders if that was even the largest sea creature out there.
When Sole's getting ready for bed, Preston knocks at their door gently. "Even I can admit when something is a lost cause," There was a guilt dripped into his tone. A silent apology to the fallen men. "I'll tell our guys to stay out of the water for a few days. We can rely on the nets for fish."
"We should set up a limit for how far out our boats can go."
"We will. Tomorrow. For now, get some rest." He's halfway to closing the door when Sole speaks again.
"I jumped off of the Prydwen once..."
"Excuse me?"
"I was fine. I wanted to go into the water. I did."
"Excuse me?"
"I couldn't see anything. But I heard something. I felt the sound go through me. I think it was a whale."
"Think or hope?" Sole doesn't say anything. Preston gets his answer regardless. "Was it close to you or do you think it was fine?"
"Think or hope," Sole mirrors. "I don't know. It was large."
"That seems to be a theme with the ocean."
"...Is that why no one has tried to cross the ocean again in 200 years? I thought...I thought there'd be pirates again out there. Or something. That massive wooden ships had made a comeback somewhere."
"I can't say. For all we know, maybe people have tried." Sole doesn't want to think about the connotations of that.
"No one wanted to go to Spectacle Island."
"I'm sure it looks nice but...To be honest, neither would I. I'm Sorry."
"It's fine. I get it now...I don't think I do anymore, for a while...John wouldn't get in the boat."
"Hancock...Is a smart man. Sometimes."
"Sometimes? You're saying that to the person that jumped off of the Prydwen."
"True, you do make Hancock look like Einstein."
"Thank God people still know Einstein," Sole mumbles. "John's smarter than he let's on."
"He once showed up to my door, drunk, asking if I thought Nick had a penis. Then, if he did, if it could be classed as a vibrator. I refused to answer or ask the context for why he wanted to know."
"...On that note, goodnight Preston."
"Goodnight, Sole."
Sole stares at the ceiling as they try to sleep that night. The sound of the waves crashing against the walls keeps them awake.

Hey, could I have some reactions to the male companions *coughValentinecough* reactions to seeing a female Sole Survivor outside of their radiation suits for the first time?
This is actually a really cool idea!! and I'm loving the appreciation that Nick's getting right now (Bethesda make him romanceable NOW)

Male Companions React to Seeing Sole Outside Her Radiation Suit
(Includes: Danse, Deacon, Hancock, MacCready, Nick and Preston)
Paladin Danse He can relate to always wearing a suit that hides most of his appearance. However, Sole has seen Danse out of his power armour a fair few times while they've been travelling together, he's never seen Sole in anything but her radiation suit. He won't say anything at first, wanting to keep their relationship strictly professional, but Sole may catch him staring for a little too long from time to time, before snapping out of it and pretending nothing had happened.
Deacon He'd definitely already made his guesses on what Sole looks like outside of the suit. His personal favourite theory - that Glory and Tom got sick of hearing about - was that Sole had six heads and fourteen arms coming out of her stomach. Still, he can't deny that he's somewhat taken aback when Sole eventually does take her radiation suit off. He'll make a comment on how he's relieved she has a normal amount of limbs, to which he'll refuse to elaborate on. If they're in Railroad HQ, Glory will definitely smack him across the head.
Hancock While he never would've openly admitted, despite a few passing comments about Sole's 'interesting get up', Hancock was so curious about what Sole actually looked like under her suit. He would've never outright asked though, not wanting to come off as weird. When Sole does take her suit off around him, depending on how close they are, Hancock might mention how he prefers them without the suit. He won't want to make Sole feel uncomfortable though, especially if they're not very close, so he'll leave it at that.
MacCready He has no idea why Sole insists on wearing her radiation suit everywhere. The Glowing Sea, sure. Boston Commons, maybe. But Diamond City? If MacCready ever brings up Sole's suit, it'll be more about how he doesn't understand why they wear it everywhere. When Sole finally takes off her suit in his presence, he's initially just relieved it doesn't look like he's travelling the Commonwealth with an alien, then he realises how beautiful Sole actually is. It makes travelling with her afterwards a little more awkward - for him - often finding himself quite flustered around her. He just hopes that Sole hasn't caught on yet, or that she ever will.
Nick Valentine With his own get up being rather unconventional - how often do you see a synth detective? - Nick actually appreciates that Sole only ever goes around in a radiation suit. It somehow balances out how unusual they both appear alone and makes him feel just a little less abnormal. Admittedly, he is quite curious as to what Sole actually looks like, but he'd never outright ask or make her feel like she had to show him. When Sole does take her suit off, he's pleasantly surprised, but he won't mention it, wanting to avoid making her uncomfortable, even if he does think Sole's a sight for sore eyes. Whether Sole decides to keep the suit off or she puts it back on right after, Nick won't mind either way, he's just happy to have the company.
Preston Garvey When Preston first met Sole outside the Museum of Freedom, he was almost dead certain she was an alien, seeing her take down all those raiders in her radiation suit. He's only ever mentioned Sole's choice in clothing a few times, mainly wondering how she got into that power armour when she took on the Deathclaw. He'd never actually ask Sole to take her suit off, worrying she might not feel comfortable enough to, so when she finally does, he's relieved that she trusts him enough to take it off around him. Sure, her beauty is a bonus, but he decides to keep that part to himself for now.
