Okay! Here's the promised ask! (Idk if I'll get to everyone's parents, so sorry for everyone who gets left out)

Now, I don't know if you meant writing for them before they had kids, so this will probably be a mix

Starting off with Ranva and Milan, of course! (Their's will probably be the longest because... yeah)

Milan seeing Ranva for the first time and he's jaw drops, because look at her!

I think hearing about the time when Milan helps Ranva get away from the fae realm would be really interesting (plus baby Henry 🥺)

Ranva having the exact opposite problem of Henry, as in he had to adjust to the fae realm and her to the human realm (the parallels of these two kill me every day)

I'm actually really interested in the time before Aiden was born (as in they're already in the human realm, but he's not born yet), because we never hear about it

My initial thought was to write fluff for them as couples (with no kids) but since I have no actual plans for this god knows when I’ll even get around to do this I’m open for everything!

Milan was completely star struck when he met Ranva. Ranva’s sister noticed it first and told her. They were both giggling like crazy stealing glances at him stealing glances at Ranva xD and at one point he gathered his courage and really formally introduced himself, with hand-kiss and all.

To be honest, Ranva’s sister, her teacher and her maid were the ones who had the most part in arranging her and Milan’s “escape”. More interesting is probably the time before that (their secret meetings, Ranva telling Milan about Henry and about wanting to leave with them) and after (Milan helping her adjust, helping her with Henry, refusing to hunt for people who talked bad about his wife).

The way Henry’s story is mirroring his mother’s (but reverse) is one of my favorite things about the two. Also how different yet similar their way of freedom looks like!

When Aiden was born, Ranva already spent six years in the human realm. In the time till his birth a lot of her adjusting and dealing with missing home happened. Her learning some customs she had to adopt. Her making friends with Holly. Her, Milan and Henry being a happy little family despite some sullen grumbles from other villagers.

I wouldn’t really know what to tell you about it though, if you don’t have specific questions…

Fenna is already adorable, but baker Fenna from the modern au is even more so! Her and young Cyrus meeting in France is so cute too. I like thinking about younger them lately, even in canon. Not that they’d play any role significant enough for me to think about them, but I do and I adore them xD

The thing is that Fenna loves Cyrus. She remembers the man he used to be and she still sees that man in him, deep down. She’s hoping to one day get him back out. He might never be the same like he was before they lost Thorin, but she holds on to him because she knows deep down he’s still a good man. Flawed, but good. And she loves and believes in him still, though she doesn’t approve of the way he handles his relationship to their kids.

Halea’s parents’ names are Arian and Sofia. They are actually least developed, so I can’t tell you much about them. Except for that Sofia is originally from the Oak court, where her mother was one of the queen’s ladies. And Arian is head of the House of Hummingbirds, who married her and took her to the Willow court with him.

It’s funny how you know little about Maya’s mother, yet she’s the first parent beside Milan and Ranva that actually got a backstory xD

Gwen is a witch. She and her family before her, like many witches, were follower of the old ways. Which is what you call people in the human world that still believe in the old religion (the goddesses, the existence of fae and magic…) and follow old customs.

She grew up living with her grandmother and mother in their little cottage by the forest. She learned the old ways and her craft from them. Now she couldn’t do real magic, since humans are incapable of it, but she knew old rituals and little “spells” and knew how to make potions and (lucky) charms and she knew lots about herbs.

She and Maya lived from what Gwen sold on the big market in their hometown. Things like wool, eggs and goat milk and woven baskets. Dried herbs, balms and medicine. But also charms, potions and other stuff for the more “superstitious” people. Ranva was one of her customers, too.

Gwen was never interested in marriage. But she did want a child. Which is why she wished for Maya!

Oh yeah I remember you mentioning that! I think it fits your characters very well (both the song and the positions you applied to them like who’s the king and who’s the poet…)

Music can be a very good way to get close to our characters! I like doing that a lot too!

Initially it was meant to just be a placeholder name until I figured out if I wanted her to have a pact with Solomon or not (her name is Marchosias, so they do have one lol), but a friend and I grew so attached to calling her 'Maze' that I just made it her nickname

⸺ CONCEPT AND DESIGN 01 ⸺ How often do you think about them in a day?

That question is so funny, it makes it sound like she has left my mind even once :)

No, but in all seriousness, I think about her......a little too much maybe lol. Plus every once in a while I have weeks where I just debate how I want to do a certain aspect of her character, backstory and so on. The first thing I struggled with was giving her a proper name, because I wasn't too sure if I wanted her to have a pact with Solomon at first. And once I finally settled on letting her have one, I suddenly had to figure out how to handle Marchosias being described as a fallen angel in demonology when I originally wanted her to be demon-born

The funny thing is, I already started thinking about her way before I even decided to turn her into an OC because of @today-in-the-devildom. I always kind of headcanoned that the blog actually exists in-universe (which is why I at some point slightly rebranded it to be part of RAD's Newspaper Club), and while writing more and more entires I started to shape the personality of the writer who--surprise--is now her!

3) Her fatal flaw is definitely her habit of bottling up her emotions. Despite how trauma is the cause for Amita instinctively suppressing how she feels and keeping her walls up as much as possible, it only just makes her a ticking time bomb in the end. She can and has gone off into an uncontrollable rage, involuntarily taking on a transformation her people don't understand & view as being demonic. If she wasn't stopped, she would have killed many people in her village. If it happens again, she could very well end up getting killed herself by someone seeking to protect those nearby. And as the cherry on top, said transformation is fatal if she forces her power past her body's natural limits too much or for too long. It's a lose-lose situation, but she's aware of it, and does her best in putting in work to be more emotionally mature for her sake & everyone else's. Even if she should have never ended up like this in the first place.

7) Maybe story-wise? At first, Amita was going to be more of the "average" member of her kind. But I started to think, and realized I could do a lot to enrich her character more (using a few personal experiences I've had IRL as inspiration). Granted, how...tragic she's developing to be wasn't fully intentional, but! IMO, the DB setting could use a more grounded perspective as a change of pace. How the world's seen through the eyes of someone disconnected from the Z Fighters and not involved with the craziness that's happened in space. A human with alien blood who's - more or less - lived a mundane life. If Amita were to actually be a character in the franchise, I feel like she'd stand out a lot with her sardonicism & subtle melancholy. I think that's neat.

Some might say she's unbearingly negative, but I prommy she does have a lot of positive traits too! (And ngl, Amita is meant to be the opposing "coin side" to my other OC/self-insert blend Maya, who despite the struggles she's gone through in her story has maintained a bright & cheery personality 😂 Squidward & Spongebob type beat)

19) In the "tame" aspect, she shuts down at first. Her anger initially manifests as a burning kind of sadness, in a way? She gets distraught. Then, the sadness turns into an inferno of fury. Amita always removes herself from whatever situation or scene that sparked her rage, and goes somewhere remote to vent through crushing boulders & the like.

It's...ironically rare for her to get enraged though? Especially in her older years now. Sorrow is definitely what comes to her the fastest and easiest, processed better than anger is. She taught herself long ago that it's always better to drown in the torrent alone, since it's just her own burden and asking for help the first & only time got her nowhere anyway.

I haven’t done a review ina bit, I’m sorry :( my classes started so I’ve been a bit busy. Anyway tysm for updating so much, you’re one of the only authors I follow who uploads consistently & I appreciate it sm !! You truly do spoil us <3 let’s get into it … TWENTY FOUR?????!! Omg. Like. Omg. I loveeeeeee me some angst so this may be one of my fave chapters so far. Idk if you meant the note at the end to be angsty but I interpreted it like that a bit. Only because it sounded a tinsy bit sad in the beginning with the “since you don’t wanna hear me you’ll just have to read this” but then it was so cute with her little “p.s” remark!! I think I’m mostly thinking the note as a bit angsty bcs I just picture him waking up seeing she’s not next to him, waking up and looking for her & seeing the note & going ☹️ but then going 😒😒 because whatever she was an asshole anyway. But maybe I’m overthinking. I think it’s great that oc apologized + the extent that she apologized because I wouldn’t have imagined her being so insistent. I personally would’ve felt embarrassed after he ignored the first initial apology & would’ve just left when he walked away (ik she tried) but I like this for her, to me it shows compassion and maturity in her character. We still don’t know everyyyy thing about jk so I think it’s not fair to say he’s overdoing it because he honestly seemed genuinely bothered by her comment. Maybe it hurts so bad bc he hates how someone he holds on some sort of high regard (oc) can view him like that. The “fuck you” from last chapter hurt me too lowkey so again, shout out to oc for brushing it to the side and still apologizing. I think it’s so sweet how even though hes mad at her he still took care of her. He could’ve just ignored her and kept walking. Now that would’ve been an asshole thing to do, but he didn’t. I’m curious as to what he left to do for a few hours ngl 👀 like don’t tell me he went to go get some and then came home to oc💀💀 I’m laughing but I’m not (tbh I don’t really think he did that but this is me just thinking). The kiss was so hawt too & when he’s all demanding🥵🥵 “sit down” “go to sleep, I don’t want to hear you anymore”. I need to chill ik. Idk if he kissed her just to shut her up or if he was so touched by her apology he just felt the need to kiss her. I wonder if the angst will continue or will there be any reconciliation next part!! I can’t wait !!! (Sorry this was so long)

Can we just talk about the ending of KawoShin open discuss. *sort of spoilerish*

I feel like I’m the only one who’s like reallly disappointed LMFAO--ya’ll there’s so much “canon” alternative universe and merchandise for Kawoshin in Evangelion that it kind of makes me upset to realise this couple just went down the drain. Yeah, I can see how people were like, “Kaworu’s toxic” or “Kaworu has a hero complex for Shinji” to which I say are valid points. But the toxic thing I feel like can also be applied to pretty much everyone around Shinji tbh, except for Rei. I did NOT, like Asuka at all but I really love her character though, and I felt for her a lot throughout the series.

I did not ship them either because honestly, Shinji and Asuka seemed better off playing the sibling dynamic instead of trying to play bf/gf which honestly is kind of forced by their living situation. Also since they’re in a similar disposition non existent father and dead mother, you’d imagine they would rely on each other for emotional comfort. Though Asuka—her personality I feel like she can’t differentiate between familial love and romantic love and the affection she wants is a bit of both. But, her character tries to be “mature”; she wants romantic love more and does this through sexual means and romantic gestures e.g. like kissing. One of my friends told me that you can’t stay friends as a boy and a girl cause eventually you catch feelings. Which I say is kinda dumb cause I have a lot of male friends, and I definitely don’t harbour those feelings, but I guess it’s a common phenomena.

I think this is what happens in this case, of Asuka and Shinji. Even after rejection of instrumentality they actually are depicted as childhood friends. But knowing how they both were before to each other, it was not good tbh. Also to mention the choking like thrice— bro if anything, this showcases a really abusive relationship and I think this outstretches the idea of their character tropes. Which I firmly stand by saying they’re superficial to each other. AsuShin were never really there for each other and are using each other in a forced situation. However, you can’t deny that they didn’t at some point catch feels, also Shinji is pretty consistent how he still cares about everyone around him. Which I really like how they add that to his character because it reminiscent of Yui, because you see a duality of both his parents personality in Shinji throughout the series—it’s a really nice touch. But bruh, if we gonna talk about that coma scene—I’m out LOL.

Thoughhhh, she is a true definition of best girl I really like her arc, fighting drive, and her skills as an Eva pilot 😭💗--but bruh she’s still a toxic and sometimes annoying tsundere trope, but still she’s 14 what can you do. So I feel like Kensuke and Asuka are actually a pretty good combo, cause he’s always been pretty mature even without parents. Also Asuka was into older guys, so I guess this is a win win?? Also Rei and Shinji, I honestly cannot get my head around it cause that’s pretty much his mom—so in a way that’s like either his half-sister or mom-ish clone?? Idk but Yui is definitely the donor LOL.

Kaworu and Shinji I felt like brought a bunch of things out of each other. I don’t know which timeline begins first, but I’d like to think the manga, the anime (plus its movies), and then to the rebuild series. Because I think that order is kind of pivotal to observing Kaworu’s character development from being a person who’s trying to understand human feelings to then the kinder person we see in the final series. You can tell how he’s changed and he knows Shinji a lot more as well as being considerate to him e.g. giving him personal space or letting him work at his own pace. Also that “we’ll meet again.” Is an obvious nod to how he’s done this before.

His literal story in every timeline is always romantic LOL, like bruh I can’t remember which game it was but basically a bad ending of Kawoshin route is that you reject Kaworu and he starts the third impact 🤡. Also I don’t know why but I started to see a weird dynamic between those two, in the manga their interactions reminded me of Asuka and Shinji—which Shinji is the tsundere Asuka here. I don’t know if this is relevant but the older character relative to the character they’re with seems to play off a mature vs a childish person trope. Asuka is younger than Shinji and Shinji is actually younger than Kaworu. Then again I could be overseeing this but istg manga Kaworu and Shinji mirror the whole Asushin dynamic. Like he’s seriously agressive against Kaworu, then after killing him he admits liking him. 🤡 I don’t know which is funnier no homo Shinji, homophobe shinji, or just closet Shinji who needs to realise sexuality is a spectrum so he could’ve idk—come out as bisexual, but whatever manga Shinji lol that timeline is over.

Anyways the development of these two is real and I think the rebuild timeline shows them at their best bringing their own personage out from each other like how they both enjoy music together--WHICH I’M SO SAD WE NEVER GET TO SEE THAT CELLO AGAIN. Then there’s those feelings of humanity, love, kindness, etc. Which yeah an angel could represent those things, but Kaworu is still his own person, self-aware of a cycle and if you think about how he initially was there to USE Shinji, but ultimately turned on that plan set by SEELE because he loved Shinji (and a bunch of other things like him showing Kaworu humanity). I also can see the argument, how “ideal” Kaworu is to Shinji, but he’s more self aware of the time he has before he KNOWS he’ll die and knows how to act for himself in that duration to make the most of it. All with Shinji. At some point, I think he fell in love with Shinji tho I don’t know where it began tbh—considering that all those alternate universes do exist. Kaworu does romantically love Shinji--so, in some universe they both reciprocate their feelings to each other.

In the last movie during that convo with Shinji. Like bREH it’s so emotionally moving because Kaworu remembers ALLLLL the timelines and how he’s been with Shinji and later Shinji himself recalls the events too. Where they show the scene from the manga and anime. Kaworu cries after being set free from the EVA cycle. Which, I definitely understood what he meant by him saying “it’ll be lonely” and how Shinji changed or that he’s actually different this time.

Either way, Shinji did right by him because it’s always Kaworu who has the purpose of “trying to save Shinji” but it always ends up the same. I thought that was really moving because Shinji tells Kaworu he’s gonna let him live a life for himself for once and he wants the same for everyone as well. Which was honestly so meaningful cause I think Kaworu’s character and like Rei too when they start to realise how to “live” like a person and not another puppet it’s truly liberating. Another thing I forgot, bruh Kaworu calls Gendo his father and ngl I feel like this is kind of a weird lore situation because I for sure don’t think he’s the donor. I think he calls him that as an insult because he knows Gendo’s whole doing and relative to Shinji—I kind of see it as a joke LOL. Like it’s equivalent to saying, “daddy chill”, or “hey look it’s daddy and his plans to end the world” also I kind of like to think of it as a father in law thing cause you know, Kawoshin *winks amirite*

The ending, I’m honestly hoping is just an open ending because it gives everything an actual start of their adult lives not being dictated by extraterrestrial forces. Though, I’m kind of wondering if the world doesn’t have EVAs does that still mean everyone else still has the same backstory, and do they remember? Maybe Mari really is just a coworker lmfao, and there’s still a chance for Kaworu and Shinji cause ngl, they did have a convo (presumably from the spoilers) about still remaining close afterwards and that stare at the ending seems very hopeful.

I call bs from Anno saying, “oh Shinji is based off him and Mari off of his wife”, like honestly any OCs made theres always some part of yourself made into that character. Which is probably why a lot of people relate to the characters in EVA because they’re based off real things (e.g. those war machines characters are named after and people around them). I think why Kaworu and Rei are together at the end, is bc they’re very much the same. They’re mass produced dolls—which oddly enough that’s the case for all the children except they don’t recall the loop. Kind of funny also how both Kaworu and Rei became farmers lmfao so ig it runs in the family (yes that’s right I like the idea that they’re siblings it was always noted that they’re like “the same”).

Another thing, i think why the rebuild really did well for Kawoshin and in my opinion canonised it—the convo with elder Ryoji Kaji (Misato’s baby daddy) that there was a time he felt incredibly lonely and depressed thinking Misato didn’t love him and so he started looking out for himself. So self love and found himself a hobby in farming which he suggests to Kaworu—basically saying he might feel like Shinji doesn’t love him but he’s gotta remember to take care of himself. if I go thru a breakup ill feel like it’s the end of the world but Kaji says y’a gotta self love broe and take care yo self gad dam fam 😭 💗.

Though, that look at the end from Shinji to Kaworu—I’d like to believe there is still hope that one day when they’re a bit stable in their adult lives, they’ll run into each other.

I prefer /self-insert x canon character/ & /canon character x canon character/ — I don't mind /oc character x canon character/, but I just prefer things to feel more canon and immersive for selfship fics — For /canon char x canon char/ I don't like toxic pairings, ngl and I often stick to healthy canon ships

Though I read a lot of books abt casual hook-ups, I'm not good at writing them 🤣

Well, you asked for fiction-like and this seemed really fiction-like. I will never forget this event in my life too it felt like a teen fic. During my musical theater class, there's this guy and we felt like eleanor & park. He seemed Korean in appearance while I was this curly-haired chubby girl too. I was surprised when he shared his earphones with me when I wasn't even asking. Then, I caught him searching for me from across the room. Ever since then, I noticed that we passed by each other at the hallway a lot. I didn't know if it was only then or we might have actually come across each other and I wasn't just noticing him before. Even when I changed my direction, I still bumped into him. Then this OPM would play everytime we'd talk alone and it meant 'destiny' in English. He gave me the so lost in you gaze while I was talking about philosophy and it's not even a romantic subject. Like if his look could swallow, he might have vacuumed me whole. (I'm trying to describe it so you could feel it) He laughed at the joke I wasn't even done telling yet and we shared meaningful glances back stage. He even sang "A whole new world' to me. We also had witty banters and many more! But just like eleanor & park, we didn't end up together and nothing ever materialized. He's too passive to act out while I'm a little prideful to initiate first. We both went cold shoulder when we felt like giving ourselves away yet we can't stop catching each other. It's like cat and mouse. It got to a point where my head hurt really bad bc I was trying to figure out if he really liked me back and I was trying hard to talk to myself out of feeling anything for him bc he's so vague. He might be my destiny but the kind of destiny that shows you what you really need and what makes you feel secured in a relationship, more like a lesson learned. Perhaps for me, I realized that the cute and exciting moments in fiction that give you butterflies in the stomach were nothing compared to someone who will never make you question his affections for you and will even show you how to love openly. I'm still looking for this someone, though I'd never forget him and the things he taught me about myself, it's too insightful, cute and def worth-telling 💖

T-T Monroe… Coming as a person who has been aware of you for a few months now and have only just worked up the nerve to follow you after you followed me cause your writing and characterization was just so impressive to me it means a lot. I think I’ve mentioned it before that while I’ve had oc’s in the past, and my main muse is so much mine that she may as well be an oc at this point, Joel has been the first official oc I’ve put out into the rpc. The first oc I’ve had that stuck around long enough for me to develop him into a character that FEELS like a person to me, like a genuine human being within his story instead of just a concept of one. Ngl I was terrified. I still am terrified of showing him to people cause I do worry he’s not enough, that I need to do more to make him appealing, to make him interesting, to make my original character worthy even if he already means so much to me…

Bit by bit, while I’ve built up this blog you along with others, have helped disperse so much of that initial fear. So many of those first time oc writer insecurities that I had. You and literally everyone else I follow here and interact with have all been so unbelievably kind with not only showing interest but actually offering feedback when I ask for it because honestly, it is important. We have this mindset that we shouldn’t create for others but instead create because it makes us happy and I do believe in that but—- what’s the point of creation if you can’t share it with others? If you’re the only one who knows about it? Acknowledges it? Artists no matter of what kind thrive on recognition and feedback not because we fish for praise but just because art no matter through what medium is meant to be communal and shared. It’s just another form of communication so had this blog and this muse been met with radio silence you can bet as much as I love Joel he wouldn’t have lasted long.

♔ ( intro ) Hello, anybody that may be reading this! My name is Marcel, and I’m just a guy that loves both Sebastian Smythe and torturing peoples existence with his shenanigans. Half a joke, half not. I have been role playing Sebastian for over three years now and have come back to love my boy again after a long time of taking a break from the RPC, and my previous blog was bcingnicesucks. ♔ ( writing ) Roleplay is meant to be fun! It’s all fun and games! So let’s have fun! I don’t like petty stuff if there’s no reason for it, ngl. I am not triggered by any subject when it comes to writing so come at me with whatever. I like to write long things and short things-- but I really do prefer something somewhat in-depth overtime. If you get frustrated with long replies though, I’m probably not the right writing partner for you. I never expect you to match the length at all, as long as you give me a little bit of something to work with, my love for lengthy writing is purely just something I enjoy to do so that the universe in which Sebastian exists in is prominent and vibrant in my head. I will never judge you for lack of writing or long replies as long as it’s not like a one-liner reply to my two paragraph reply. Do what you can! Express yourself! I don’t care about grammar being perfect either, that’s an unrealistic expectation considering not everybody is the best with grammar and some people come from different first languages.

♔ ( content ) The mun is 18+, and Sebastian is lowkey a hoe, so in no way will this blog be free of NSFW content. I used to be fine with interacting with minors so long as it wasn’t shippy or anything but now I”m kinda even uncomfortable with knowing a minor could be seeing NSFW content on their dash coming from my blog so I highly prefer things to stay 18+ around here. Sebastian has a dark character background, meaning their may be mention of child abuse, death and more on this blog. I will tag everything I post accordingly always. If there’s something specific you’d like tagged that you see, hit me up. I can accommodate to that.

♔ ( activity ) My activity varies from what’s going on in my life but I intend to stay active as I can always. September-December I will be doing an internship with Disney so I may be a bit busier than usual meaning my activity might be spottier as far as actual replies but I’ll stay active on the dash and you can always feel free to remind me of replying. I don’t like to be harassed but I do lose threads sometimes so I appreciate your reminder if you give it.

♔ ( portrayal ) Seeing as there was literally never a specification for Sebastian’s sexuality in the duration of the show, I have always imagined him to be bisexual. This being said, I play Sebastian as being interested in both men and women with a stronger interest in men. Sebastian is a human and there is a reason for every negative thing he may do, but Glee is a campy show and role play is fiction-- meaning my Sebastian is a dick. Yes, Sebastian is a good person but he can also be a bad person. He is a learning human and he is a pest, I will not lie. If you are offended with anything Sebastian says or does to your muse, then you can let me know but this is a warning now that if you’re highly sensitive or offended by characters who like to fuck things up a bit then I don’t recommend writing with me haha.

♔ ( shipping ) I am so easy to ship with I’m not gonna lie. Sebastian is different story but as far as I go you can ALWAYS come to me with your ship ideas or needs. I love to ship unexpected or strange pairings and I get so excited about ships. I prefer to go hardcore with ships, and what I mean by this is when I have a ship with you I will make it my upmost effort to make it unique for the both of us and mainly prioritize just having fun!

♔ ( stealing ) Yes, a lot of roleplayers have some similar headcanons if they roleplay the same character, but I have a very specific headcanon childhood and story line for Sebastian so I can tell if you stole specific details. I would never assume someone of copying if I didn’t feel confident in it, because again, from personal experience headcanons can definitely be the same between two people without intention of stealing them. If something is not credited on the things I post, that means I made it. All icons are made by scratch by me.

Hello everyone! Yui here, with today’s special feature, DDLitG Behind the Scenes: What’s the deal with Ako?

In this special update we’ll talk about her character in general, design, her place in the story, and more! So get comfortable in your seat, get yourself some good snacks, and let’s delve into the background of DDLitG’s 1st-ish original character~

Who is Ako?

Ako, formerly known as “female student”, was originally one of the many NPCs used by the game’s engine to fill its world with nondescript background characters, so as to make it feel less empty. However, Sayori took a special interest in her, and decided to befriend her, following the steps of a young MC who befriended Sayori in a similar situation and ended up saving her life. This would in turn allow Ako to grow as a character beyond her 1 line of coding and get her own sprites, as well as being able to interact with the world. She would later go on to fall in love with Sayori and shenanigans ensue.

Ako was created with the purpose of telling the story of the Friendship arc.

Designing Ako.

Let me make one thing clear: I’m not a character designer. I don’t know jack about it besides the very basics. But I did try to make someone who looked mildly original and, most importantly, different from the other girls.

Originally, she was going to be the image of a shy, fragile girl who Sayori befriended out of pity, more than anything. Based on this initial idea, I made this beta Ako design on one of my copybooks when I should’ve been working:

As you can see, her very first sprite was the one where she’s shyly looking away to avoid eye contact (and to seem annoying, but more on that later). I was happy with the pose but not with her face, as it looked super unoriginal. She resembled Ochako Uraraka from My Hero Academia a bit too much, so I tried to change her hair to make her stand out more. Here is her second iteration:

This time, I felt like I cranked it up too much to the other side. Now she stood out TOO much. Her hair felt like it came more from a protagonist than someone who’s supposed to be a background character. I adopted a new philosophy after seeing this result: she had to look as bland as possible. She had to be the kind of character you see all the time in the background of an anime - those simple, unassuming designs you’d never look twice at because you’re too focused on the protagonists with candy-coloured hair. In DDLitG’s canon she’s a filler NPC brought to the forefront, and her design had to reflect that more than my desire to make her look “cool”.

With this in mind, we come to Ako v0.3

As you can see, this is much closer to her current design. But this was still a sketch (even the drawing above is very much unfinished). As you can see, I got closer to her 0.1 version with the hair, but changed the eyes to make them look more unique, giving her that more neutral, “nothing” expression. Having finally found some ground I was comfortable with, I redefined her design a little further, gave her some more details around the hair and clothes, adjusted the proportions of her body (because apparently I draw heads huge), and made her finalized design.

I was happy.

What’s with this sassy... monochrome child?

If there’s one constant to be found in the pictures above, is that she was always meant to be black and white. There are plenty of reasons, which I’ll list because, honestly, there are a lot.

1. I didn’t want to look her like the rest of the cast at fucking all. She is an OC introduced in a story with already established characters made by a much more talented writer. She’s an outsider, someone who doesn’t belong with this cast of colorful characters, and I wanted readers to be able to tell that at first glance. No, she’s not like the other girls. They don’t belong in the same place. She is not a member of the original DDLC cast, and it shows.

2. I know I can’t draw as well as Satchely, so trying to copy DDLC’s art style would just end up looking awkward and wrong. I had no choice but to do my own thing. And if I’m doing my own thing, why not take it all the way? I already gave myself artistic freedom, I might as well go crazy with it~

3. I just adore characters in a fictional universe that look different from the rest of the cast or have some strange design choice for literally no reason. Like Krillin from Dragonball, with his eyes that make him look like he belongs in an entirely different manga...

...or even Jotaro Kujo, whose hat merges with his hair because why not!

I live for dumb crap like that.

4. A huuuuuge inspiration for me while writing (besides my own uninteresting life) is music. Many times I listen to a specific track or imagine situations with specific background music to make them seem more real, and be able to better portray the feelings of a scene when writing [For example, I listened to My Chemical Romance’s Welcome to the Black Parade a lot while writing Monika’s Death].

Ako’s creation was no exception. Her appearance was partially based on the cover for not only one of my favorite Vocaloid albums of all time, but one of my favorite albums period: Wowaka’s glorious Unhappy Refrain.

I’ve been writing stuff based on this album alone for years because it’s just so damn striking to me. The picture of the faceless schoolgirl falling into the unseen abyss, the background uninterested characters that imply they are used to seeing fellow girls suffer, the distorted world they live in, the album’s way to explore teenage depression, the freaking name of the album, EVERYTHING! IT’S SUCH A GOOD EXPLORATION OF THE DIFFICULT LIFE TEENS FACE THAT OFTEN GOES UNNOTICED!! AAAAAAHHHH IT’S SO GOOD.

5. Ako was also based on a previous design I made for another character meant for an original visual novel I was writing and I’m probably never going to finish, who was also going to be monochromatic to reference this album (in that context it made more sense though cuz every character was a musical reference).

This character, in turn, was based on Monoko from Yume Nikki, which is more obvious because of her crying eye and extra arm.

So basically at this point it would’ve been weird if I hadn’t made her monochromatic.

Naming Ako

This was one of the most difficult parts, ngl.

As I mentioned, Ako was originally going to be a fragile, shy girl. Based on this, her original name during the design face was Moromi, which is one more letter than “Moroi”, which Google translate promises me means “Brittle” or “Fragile” in Japanese.

However, after the philosophy change that happened during her conceptual stage, “Fragility” was no longer at the core of her character, as it was now “Nothingness/Blandness”. Because of this, I changed her name to “Ako”.

Many people have submitted their interpretations of the name, ranging from its meaning “To teach/to learn”, and “To yearn for”, which all fit better than the original tbh.

The intended meaning is for “Ako” to be read as “A-Ko”, which is a way by which Japenese media often refers to filler characters, as it translates to “Girl A”.

Examples of this can be seen in Super Danganronpa 2, where a character in a videogame is called “A-Ko” to hide their identity...

...and in a movie called “Project A-ko”, which was a parody of the anime tropes from the time, so they gave the protagonist the most generic name ever. The antagonist and side character, by the way, are called “B-Ko” and “C-Ko” respectively. This movie is fucking awesome.

This name also made sense in the context of the story, because we already had a character named “Student A”, so this goes to show that the game just gave Ako the default name it had stored for female NPCs.

Blinded Ako, or How I Learned to Convey Emotion Through Ahegao

When I came up with Ako, she was meant to have most of her character revolving around her infatuation with Sayori. She was, after all, written in the story with the purpose of falling in love with her, and nothing else. Her character, personality, likes/dislikes, and hobbies came afterwards. As the story progressed, however, I decided that she should have a personality separate from just being in love with another character. So to separate the actions she committed under the influence of her passion, I did a little design change in the middle of the arc: Blinded Ako.

In this version, Ako has been literally blinded by love and stops being rational. This is represented by the hearts covering her eyes, and clouding her judgement. This was done not only with the purpose of representing she was past her breaking point, but also to differentiate the Ako that makes mistakes with the Ako that was introduced in the beginning of the arc. Almost so as to make them two different characters, so when she is reintroduced as a regular character after Friendship, readers could think “oh, she’s not going to do dumb stuff again, she’s not blinded by love anymore.”

Many people compared the above panel with “ahegao”, a trope in hentai manga where a character does a silly face to represent them breaking from enjoying themselves so much. This was done partially on purpose. The main idea was to represent Ako being blinded by her infatuation for Sayori, not to equate her sate of being with anything sexual. It DID end up looking more hentai-esque than I expected though, as, well, Ako is in black and white, and the heart eyes are also a trope in ahegao. And she’s sweating. And she’s saying that she’s about to break....

.....

....well at least I drove my point home.

Ako’s musical influences

Above I mentioned how music was a big part of my inspiration, and how I listened to Welcome to the Black Parade while writing Monika’s Death, so the question in no one’s mind is: what music did Yui use as inspiration for Ako’s character and the arc? 🤔

Well, hypothetical reader, the answer is that since Ako was meant to be bland and flavour-free, her original depiction is not based on a song or anything. Her desperation towards Sayori and Blinded Ako, though, are based on TRONICBOX’s 80′s style remix of Ariana Grande’s Into You. And yes, this 80′s remix in specific. Not the original song. I highly encourage you to give it a listen and pay attention to the lyrics if you want an insight into how Ako was feeling during her breaking point.

Also, as a side note, no one has asked me this, but I imagine Ako’s voice to sound like the vocals of Panty and Stocking’s ending, Fallen Angel. It’s a truly beautiful song, and once again, I highly encourage you to give it a listen and pay attention tot he lyrics if you want an insight in Ako’s current feelings towards Sayori.

Ako’s reception

This is more something personal than an explanation of the character, but it’s something I want to share nonetheless.

Remember when I said Ako was meant to be annoying? Yeah... xD

When I decided to add a new character I did so under the idea that everyone was going to hate her, because it’s a purposefully boring OC made by some insane person with the sole purpose of being added to an already interesting and loved cast of characters just to fuck everything up.

The first scene I ever wrote for Ako was the part where Monika asked if she had hurt Sayori, and she said “Not intentionally...” while looking away, which is why her first sprite ever was in that position. She was meant to make people feel frustrated over this girl just looking away from her problems and avoiding responsibility, while also telling Monika to her face that she had done something bad to Sayori. Readers were expected to hate her. That’s why in the beginning she says she doesn’t like literature, to assure you that she’s not joining the literature club. That’s why there’s a scene where she gets punched in the face. That’s why she looks so extremely out of place.

YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO DISLIKE HER!! omg I’m still surprised at how warm the reception was, you guys are just too nice for me~ ❤️

Because of the unexpected reception I had to change some parts of the arc, which were originally going to be much crueler towards her [I even questioned adding the punch at all, but it was an important part of Monika’s development so I felt it]. I also established her as a recurring character in spite of her dislike of literature, and did my best to make her less hate-able than she was originally going to be, even cutting some planned lines of dialogue that made her pretty irredeemable. Looking back, I am glad I did those changes, we ended up with a well-liked and pretty nice girl because of it~

Final thoughts

The introduction of Ako and writing Friendship in general was a very intense experience for me. It was very difficult to balance Ako as being both relevant to the story and moving the plot forward, but not make her the sole focus of everything and have her obscure everyone else, because OCs in established pieces of media tend to do that.

This arc also got a LOT of mixed reviews, some people liking it, some hating everything I did. This made me really question what I was doing and at many points even regret I was writing Friendship at all. At a certain point I lost almost 50 followers in a single update.

I also had trouble writing some parts because they were too sad. And that’s not my style! I like writing happy people being good friends, damn it, not everyone crying and hating each other.

But when all is said and done, I’m happy I wrote both Friendship and Ako into the story. I’ve received many wonderful, supportive messages telling me how much readers enjoyed it. Even some people saying they had been in a similar situation to the one depicted in the story, and were glad to see a story that showed a positive outcome.

Will I write more OCs into DDLitG?

Meh, who knows. I love writing more original stuff and expanding the world of DDLitG, but I also feel like if I introduce yet another OC, people will crucify me and hate me for flooding the story with too much stuff that’s irrelevant to the DDLC they’re used to. That being said, writing this blog is my first, and very possibly last chance to expose my stories to such a large audience. And seeing people like what you do not only because you’re riding the coattails of a recognizable brand, but because they like what you do with it, makes me pretty darn happy. Being completely honest, I’d like to add another character. But just one. And only if it’s something that will push both the story and the girls’ character arcs forward. Not just adding OCs for the sake of it.

okay so i nearly pulled an all nighter reading tgu and i only stopped because my friend made me promise id read one more chapter and then sleep and i dont break promises but ive just finished reading and proceeded to have almost a meltdown to my friends because hhhh

like i know i feel super intensely about fictional characters and probably feel too much but woah did this fic take it out of me, im sure i felt almost every emotion they did - including that pure dread on the realisation of the last chapters and the sheer fear they felt and i sort of feel like being sick which hey isn't enjoyable but it's a testament to how well you write that i have connected with these idiot girls (meant with all love and kindness to them but hey) to such an extent that i am literally feeling what they are, you have so much talent and i feel incredibly lucky to be reading this?

ngl i would read a very long meta history of toby. i find your characters delightful

All right, anon, you asked for it. Forgive me for taking so long, it's long and I had to check some dates.

So: basic tl;dr, Toby started out as a Tolkien rp oc, a Silvan elf meant to explore more traditional folklore elves. Everything he became, regardless of verse, grew from that initial idea, of a wild elf who saw humans as alien and insignificant, but entertaining, and didn’t follow the same moral code that humanity does. This is what I mean when I say that certain elements have to go into Toby for him to be Toby, because without that element of invoking folkloric elves, he’s not Toby.

So, let’s start at the beginning, shall we? The year is 2o14, it’s either January or February at this point. I’ve been active in the Tolkien rp community as various characters for about a year, and I’ve grown in my understanding of the lore. I’ve also made lots of friends, and a lot of them have elf ocs. And while I love and cherish all of their ocs, I can’t help but notice some... trends. Which make sense from a certain perspective because obviously people are drawing from the more recognizable aspects of Tolkien’s lore to create their wish-fulfillment ocs. That’s okay! But my character creation motives tend toward a combination of “what would be interesting?” and “how would I go about this common trope or concept?”

So everyone has an elf oc and I want to be like the cool kids, I want my own elf oc, except that... uh... elves are kinda boring to me? I believe I kinda tossed around a few ideas but none of them really stuck, until I was thinking about folklore elves and got an itch for an elf who reflected those elves instead. I didn’t think I’d be able to pull it off until my research reminded me of the Silvan elves, the original inhabitants of Mirkwood.

(By the way, nothing makes it more apparent that Tolkien is British than the fact that we’re expected to believe without question that when the Sindar asked the Silvan if they could live with them, the Silvan happily made the Sindar their rulers and allowed them to erase ninety percent of their culture and most of their language. Like. Just saying.)

So I made an elf oc who was a bitter Sindar, angry at what through his lens he saw as conquerors, as well as his people for allowing it and going along with things. This was the first iteration of Toby, and was how I sowed the seeds for what he would become.

Toby, in this iteration, lived in Mirkwood. He was a healer, originally of trees but after running off to live in the forest he expanded his knowledge and can heal non-trees too. He did go off wandering sometimes, but mostly he wanted to hang out in his forest with the trees. He also was prone to stealing children from Dale and Laketown and any other human settlements that were relatively near, an would raise them until they were an adult and boring and send them out into the world. (One of my later oc’s ended up being a child of one of those children.)

While I was playing Toby, a partner of mine wanted to do a Hades/Persephone inspired verse, and I volunteered Toby as her Hades. While our verse never really got very far, it is the origin of Toby’s godhood iteration, which is when I started exploring the core of Toby’s personality, and determined what aspects of him would remain from one iteration to the next. The bitterness at the Sindar couldn’t carry over, but wanting to hang out with the trees and stealing children could translate into anything.

I played Toby off and on until I left the Tolkien rp community for good in 2o15, and at that time, like everything else from that period, he was shelved for awhile. It wasn’t until later on that I began thinking about him again, and allowed him to flourish as an oc, though he didn’t initially have a home verse because I hadn’t yet added him to Rhell.

So, Rhell. I’m going to be honest, I don’t remember the exact sequence of events here. I just know that I was playing around with lorebuilding in Rhell, and I rather liked the idea of basing the lore on what I had built for the rp verse. I revamped it somewhat and added Toby to Rhell, which is where he has done his most growth as a character and is the default version of him I use when I’m talking about Toby in a general sense.

Later on, I was working on a new story, Brolly Mage. Elves are prevalent in that, and I added Toby in a “throw-it-in” kind of sense, because I wanted more elves. Instead of staying a background character, he decided he was going to be the series antagonist. That this was the easiest alignment to get him to play worries me, but honestly it makes sense: Toby, in almost all incarnations, hates humans and elves and everyone else, too. It made sense that he’d try to destroy everything.

By that point, Toby had taken on a life of his own, and began writing himself into stories that I allowed to develop to a certain point. Admittedly I tend to keep him out of certain verses, but like Stasney, he has iterations across the board; he’s both a mainverse character and a floater, because there are so many interesting ways to explore him.

While elements will shift and change over time, and different things come to the fore, every incarnation of Toby is meant to invoke that “folklore/old gods” feel that inspired him. While being a grumpy, sulky asshole tends to carry over, it’s not the iron core of who Toby is (in fact, the original incarnation wasn’t even that grumpy, except when he had to go to the palace for some reason). It exists more to make him endearingly shitty instead of just regular shitty. (Which seems to be working, y’all tend to be really thirsty for Toby to be in every verse ever. Or maybe that’s just Hayley.)

The final piece of history for Toby is that the final element that made him come together in the beginning was watching Ryan Kelly (of Celtic Thunder) perform. I tend to use this, this, and this as my go-to performances when I need to get him into my head. (Ryan is the one with dark hair.) (He’s also my face/voicecanon for Toby.)

♥ What’s the absolute best experience you’ve had in RP?

the formation of #kindsquad (aka the day @vencficas went on a positivity rampage, bless u katie) was probably one of the best days here, ever.

♦ What’s your favorite thing about RP, generally?

in terms of actual rp-related stuff? plotting, for sure. coming up with cool new ideas (and/or just screaming headcanons at each other) is what keeps this shit going!!

♚ Have you ever made any lasting friends through RP?

i mean you, @notsomellow, and @hcvenofear have all lasted a year or longer, so i guess you three count?? love y’all

⚜ Have you ever met anyone from RP in real life?

yup!! one friend in seattle at the tail end of my last trip, who’s also indirectly the reason i’m back on here at all (:

✮ Do you think you’ve improved as a writer through roleplaying?

definitely!! i sincerely think that without rp i’d be way more out of practice. and there’s a few partners whose writing i really admire, which helps motivate me to better my own for sure.

☄ Has roleplay positively affected your life in some ways?

i guess so?? i mean, i have friends here, it’s help me come up with a ton of new characters and plots, and gives me a reason to write almost daily! all good things.

☯ Tell us all about your favorite muse you’ve ever written and why they meant so much to you.

sophia yoo. even if she’s not my most active rn, she was my first ever completely fandomless oc – aka something that was entirely mine. she’s also based on my own life/close friends who are so utterly important to me and deserve so much more positive representation than what they get, so she’s just… super important to me no matter what.

☼ Have you learned any new skills from being involved in RP (coding, editing, making GIFs, etc)?

some minor af coding, maybe? also it’s made me really good at reaching out to new people to get shit done and not feeling awkward about it, because i’m basically the initiator on here about 95% of the time lmao

☀ Have you ever joined a new fandom that you only discovered through RP?

lookin @ u, the magicians. also binx’s oc is what introduced me to the bae tbells & pll in general by extension, so!!

♨ What unlikely, ‘only possible in RP’ ships have you enjoyed writing with your muses?

currently?? i don’t actually have too many romantic threads going on. but i’m really feeling teddy and julia, ngl. carmilla and ali is also interesting!! also spalison because they’re canonically cousins now, fml. and anything with an oc is technically pretty rp-only, so i live for all of those interactions (hence why this new blog is 75% original characters lmao)!!

YOU BC YOU SENT THIS. but also bc i genuinely think you’re great?? like first of all, you are 100% one of the writers i was alluding to (in case you didn’t already know). i love your writing. actual goals. secondly, i feel like esp recently we’ve really clicked well too, like?? you’re pretty much the only one who consistently sends me things (re: this meme) & replies to all my random lil ramblings and ideas. i hope you know that i really appreciate it!! bc one downside of being the one to reach out a lot is that i end up feeling brushed aside quite often too, so just… thanks for brightening things up a bit.
