NeverAfter ep 18 spoilers: Honestly Ylfa's trial was so intense
I dont know if it was on purpose or not because ylfa has already gotten a big dose of horror with the reveal that baba yaga destroyed the Wolf. But something about Brennan telling a soft, somber but not quite horror section for Ylfa, after its clear how affected Wmily was getting.
It was tragic yes and sad. But not really horrific like the other sections?
I dunno i just appreciate Brennan's levity and knowing when to pull back in a scene because shit can get very intense. In any case we got a heartbreakingly beautiful scene in which Ylfa became the new death and I am so interested to see what her powerup was.
Hello again, Little Red Riding Hood. I’m sorry you’ve died.
[Image description: a two page comic based on a conversation between Ylfa and The Big Bad Wolf in Neverafter episode 4. Ylfa is drawn as a young girl with short, black hair, and a red cape. The Big Bad Wolf is a large, black wolf. The comic is drawn on paper in black pen, with the red of blood or Ylfa’s cape as the only spot of color.
The first panel on the first page shows Ylfa and the Wolf looking down a path into the woods, as the Wolf says “A fork in the road is coming up.”
The next panel is a close-up on Ylfa looking I’ve Rhee shoulder at the Wolf as he says “It will be easy enough to go left.”
In the next panel, he stands up behind her as he tells her “And we will find you a story where you and your grandmother are reunited.”
The panel after that shows them walking down the path side-by-side as he explains “Perhaps one where the woods man kicks down the door. Cuts me down. Carves your grandmother out of my stomach.”
The last two panels on the first page are a close-up ok Ylfa’s face, smiling anxiously, and the Wolf as seen from the muzzle down. Ylfa asks, “Does it offend you that I would kind of like it if that happened?” and he answers “You already killed me once.” Ylfa says “Well, that’s kind of unfair.”
The first panel on the second page is a close-up of a bloodied axe.
The second panel is a wide-shot of a young girl in a red cape staring down at a large shape lying at the base of a tree. A speech bubble with the words “You told me to” comes from the girl’s mouth.
The last panel shows the Wolf looking up at her as he bleeds from the neck, saying “And you were kind enough to comply.” End description.]
The comparisons that can be made between the scene in which Ylfa finally snaps from hunger and kills and eats the wolf, and the Roman myth of Romulus and Remus with the she-wolf are kinda fascinating. Like, in both stories it’s a wolf putting their instincts aside to care for children dying of hunger, putting themselves in danger in order to make sure the children survive even if they don’t. In the she-wolf myth, she risks getting killed by humans once they discover that she has been nursing two newborn humans. In the case of our big bad wolf, he knows that he’ll die in order to save Ylfa. It’s almost like the neverafter is absorbing even more than just fairytales and lullabies but maybe is also taking myths and legends as well.
Life hack: next time you don't get a joke, tell the person you're talking to that you will return in a year and a day and if they don't make you laugh on that day then they're going to fucking die
