the scene of ben finding out devi didn't get into any colleges is so important to me. everyone in her life is trying to tell her that it's gonna be okay, to not stress out, that she can apply to princeton again next fall.
and here's benjamin saying no. that's awful. i understand how you feel. i'd want to be put in a medically induced coma if it happened to me. he once again gives her space to be vulnerable, to let herself just feel all of the emotions.
just be yourself david.
because they are both these little balls of energy and anxiety until they are together and calm each other down. the red and blue color theory of it all.

Forget About Him
Ben Gross x reader
WC: 858 Warnings: Swearing? Takes place during the dance in 2x10. Reader has envious/jealous feelings towards Devi, but no Devi hate
Tumblr media
Ben was walking through the hall when he heard a sniffle. Confused, he poked his head into the nearby classrooms before finally spotting you in one. You were sitting at a random desk, dress flowing uncomfortably around your body in the same space between the table and your body. Your makeup had tear tracks through it, your mascara running down slightly with the tears that stained your face. Your face was warm and a bit splotchy from crying, your nose red.
If you had been in a more normal state of mind, you would have been upset that the person who found you was Ben. You and Ben had a slightly complicated relationship, sometimes being friendly while other times it seemed the two of you couldn’t hate each other more. It was different from him and Devi’s relationship; their relationship thrived on academic rivalry and one upping each other with insults. It seemed like when you and Ben were in a hate stage, you two genuinely hated each other. Though, the hate was one sided on your part, but you didn’t know that.
Ben slowly walked into the class, cautious of the fact that you could start yelling at him for talking to you while you were in this state.
“Y/n?” He asked cautiously. You looked up, confused as to why Ben was here as you weren’t expecting him. “What’s going on? What happened?” He walked over to you, sitting in the desk next to you, his eyes never leaving yours.
“Nothing, it’s stupid.” You said, looking away, “You’ll probably laugh at and insult me so.”
Ben was hurt that you’d think he would make fun of something that was making you so upset, but as he always played along with your “I hate you game”, he understood why you’d think that.
“Y/n, I’m not gonna laugh at you, or-or insult you.” He said gently, making you look back to him, “Seriously, what’s going on?”
You took a deep breath before speaking. “I got played. You know, I thought that someone wanted me when they didn’t and it sucks.”
Ben nodded, knowing how that felt. He decided to tell you about his experience to try and make you feel better about your own.
“Well, uh, I’ve been played too. Yeah you know, Devi played Paxton and I at the same time so, I know how you feel. And you’re right, it does suck.”
“Yeah I knew about that,” You said, nodding your head, “I’m sorry she did that. It’s shitty.”
Ben agreed with you, nodding his head when a quiet “yeah” slipped past his lips.
“I thought he liked me. He said he did so much and always would make me feel so… wanted and then he ditched me for someone else.”
“Look, whoever it is and whoever they ditched your for, forget about them alright?”
“It was Paxton. He ditched me for Devi, after he told me he wasn’t interested in Devi. She double times him and he wants her, I mean what does she have that I don’t?”
“Nothing y/n,” Ben shook his head, leaning his elbows on his legs to get closer to you, “there is nothing that Devi has that you don’t. You’re beautiful and smart and funny and really witty, trust me I’d know. Paxton played you and yeah, it sucks and it hurts, I know, but don’t think that it happened because of you. It’s his loss y/n, seriously.”
You looked over at Ben, sniffling. He was right, and somewhere in you you knew it.
“Thanks Ben. You actually made me feel a lot better.” A laugh slipped past your lips.
Ben chuckled too, “Yeah I often have that effect on people.” He said, smiling.
“You know if I had found you in this position I probably would have made fun of you. It wouldn’t be every day you see Ben Gross crying during a dance, so.”
He laughed, looking down for a second before meeting your eyes again. “I know.”
“But I’m glad you kept your word and didn’t make fun of me. It means a lot.”
“Of course.” He nodded. Suddenly he stood up, placing his hand out to you. “Come on.”
You stared at him questioningly.
“We are gonna clean your makeup up and then we’re going back to the dance, and you are going to forget all about Paxton and Devi and anything else that would make you upset, and you are going to have a great time. Maybe you’ll even save a dance for me.” He smiled at you.
You couldn’t hold back your smile as you stood, grabbing his hand.
He led you to the bathroom and waited outside while you tried to salvage your makeup through your tears, then walked back to the dance with you.
You and Ben danced all night together, getting along better than anyone had ever seen. That was the first night you began looking at Ben Gross in a different light, the first night he gave you butterflies. Ben, on the other hand, savored that night, not knowing how long the bliss between the two of you would last.
Good thing for him, that bliss never seemed to go away.

OK, I seriously can't believe someone actually thinks this about season 4 of Never Have I Ever:
"In 2023, the message of the show suddenly turned into *"racism, white supremacy, patriarchy, and class inequity doesn't exist anymore. Devi did a Bollywood dance, got into Princeton, and a racist white guy said he loves her at the last minute, so everything is going to be okay (for Gen Z)."*
This is the opposite of the premise that the show started with in 2020, which acknowledged the brutal unfairness in the world."
Firstly, it wasn't a Bollywood dance. They danced to the Tamil dubbed version of a song that is originally Telugu. Tamil cinema is known as Kollywood, and Telugu cinema is known as Tollywood. Maybe people who comment so much on racism should learn a little more about not clubbing all of Indian culture together. As a Telugu woman who lives in Tamil Nadu, I'd like to say that I was really happy with the dance number. I was especially happy because it wasn't a Bollywood dance (season 1 just used Hindi songs, and that really annoyed me because Devi is Tamil).
The show literally acknowledged that Devi ("our little hothead from the valley") was happy in that moment. There was no claim about everything being okay forever. It's just that she is better equipped to deal with problems now. She will continue to grow non-linearly, just like she did throughout the show.
Of course, the show became less about dealing with intense grief as it went on - time heals. But they did portray that grief still lingers, despite that.
Also, the portrayal of familial relationships was great - Devi talking about how it's cool to live with three generations of women in her house, Nalini having to deal with empty nest syndrome, Nalini talking about her own struggle with having to start over in the US after being a top resident in India (but of course, the last season does not acknowledge how brutally unfair the world is /s) and how she was just trying to protect Devi from being devastated, Devi setting her mother up (showing how much she had healed and grown since season 2), Kamala being too attached to her family to move away and Nalini telling her that change is good (and even Kamala's coping mechanism of becoming overprotective of Nirmala), Kamala and Devi's sweet moments, the family's acceptance and joyous celebration of Nirmala finding love again, Nirmala calling Nalini out for being mean to Devi, and of course, the heartwarming scene of Nalini helping Devi pack and telling her she's proud of her. Devi's final monologue focused primarily on how much she cares about her mother. Did all of that mean nothing to some people?
Never Have I Ever is not an unproblematic show. But I still can't believe it's being reduced to this. I. Seriously. Just. Can't. Devi was so much more comfortable in her skin than when the show started, and was no longer obsessed with external validation. Her relationship with Nalini had improved greatly. She embraced her culture so much more. She was okay with not getting into Princeton, and realised that she'd always be connected to her father no matter what. I don't mind that she didn't completely give up on her Princeton dream. I don't think she needed to, to show that she had healed. She was able to tell her dad's story in a way that felt true to herself, and did not feel exploitative (she reclaimed her power from a racist white guy). She was truly happy when she prayed to the gods before leaving to Princeton. She was surrounded by people who cared about her and loved her, as she said. And she was happily in the middle of a fun game of Never Have I Ever before Ben showed up. She had learned to love herself and her life. The show having a happy (for now) ending does not equal them saying that everything is going to be okay forever. The world is still brutally unfair. Devi is just a little better at dealing with it.
I don't know who needs to hear this but Never Have I Ever had a TEAM DEVI ending! Just because Devi was not single at the end of the show/ended up with someone you dislike, it doesn't mean that the ending wasn't a win for team Devi.
TEAM DEVI FOR THE WIN! AND THAT'S WHAT WE GOT.
I'll acknowledge that there were issues with the show throughout all four seasons. But I can't see such an empowering show being dismissed in such a ridiculous way.

You were always a creature of habit. Some of your friends would describe you as Type A, but you just liked having a certain order to things. You always use 0.5mm pencil led, only wrote your notes on dotted paper, and religiously highlighted text in yellow. Anything else would be absurdity.
Along with your many habits was a consistency of how you spent your time and who you spent it with. For example, it wasn’t out of the ordinary for you to spend your weekend at Ben Gross’ house. You have ever since you met the boy in elementary school through your parents and all the way until he asked you to be his girlfriend that one fateful night at prom. So, a weekend not spent with Ben Gross didn’t exist, and you were happy to have it that way.
As you followed the path up the familiar hill, you found your self humming along to a unknown tune and counting your steps. Once you reached exactly one hundred footsteps, you looked up knowing that you’d face the door to the Gross Household. Inviting yourself in, you greeted Patty who was working away in the kitchen before climbing the extra twenty steps that it took you to get to Ben’s room.
Now, you had expected a happy, go-lucky Ben to great you with the biggest hug he could muster. But instead you were greeted by a seemingly empty room, with only a blanketed lump on Ben’s bed showing proof of life.
You set down your purse timidly, treading into uncharted waters now. This was not a part of the routine and everything about this screamed danger.
“Ben,” his name came off your tongue like a question, like you weren’t even sure if this was your Ben. “Are you under there?” A low groan was your response. You made your way onto the bed, causing a slight dip where you sat. “Baby,” You tried again, gently lifting the covers, “What’s wrong?”
Where did Ben want to begin? It felt like everything was wrong. His grades have been slipping up, he feels sluggish and tired all the time, and he couldn’t even bring himself to face the one source of joy in his life. Ben couldn’t pinpoint exactly what’s right in his life, let alone what’s wrong. So in response he gave you another grunt, his body curling further into itself.
You could feel his muscles tighten with the temperature of his back turning cold. Although this was unknown territory, you knew what these were the signs of.
“C’mere,” You whispered. You slowly uncurled the boy’s wound up torso and bringing his presence into you, his face naturally planting itself in your curves. “You’re okay.” You reassured, drawing circles on his back.
“I’m really not (Y/N),” He finally replied, his words sounding muffled against your skin. “Everything it’s upside down. My GPA went down to a measly 3.9, I can’t seem to fit into any of my clothes, and you’re here in this really pretty sundress that I can’t even appreciate” Ben insisted, burying his face deeper into your chest. “Nothing is right.” His heart began beating more sporadically, his breathing going uneven. “Nothing makes sense anymore”
“Hey,” You called out, bring your boyfriend’s face towards yours. “All of those things are fixable, Ben. We’ll buy you clothes that fit you better, we’ll ask Mr. Kulkarni to give extra credit assignments, and you acknowledging me in my pretty sundress is enough appreciation.” You explained sweeping his damped hair out of his face. His blue eyes were piercing and he looked at you like you controlled the planets and the stars. “You’re enough.” You finished, gently thumbing his cheek.
Like magic, you felt Ben’s body relax. His chills neutralizing into warmth and the beat of his heart slowing into a steady rhythm. He wasn’t sure what about you made him feel at ease, made him feel more at home than anything else in his life. But he’d be damned to he let you say all those pretty, genuine words without any reciprocation.
So the boy returned your touch, bringing your face close to his in a kiss. It was slow, his touch trying to say all the things he couldn’t. He could feel your worry for him washing away, a weight lifting from your shoulders.
“Thank you,” Was all Ben could whisper as the two of you pulled apart, “I needed that.”
You hummed in response, allowing yourself to drop into his arms and bring both your bodies onto the bed. “Course.” You replied simply, as if it wasn’t a big deal, like you being there for Ben was a fact of life m. “Do you want to go shopping for clothes today? They opened a new fro-yo shop at the mall.” You suggested with a smile on your face.
Though those words words were mundane, the syntax sent Ben into a dizzy. Your casual kindness and soft suggestion made his heart swoon. “Yeah, that sounds nice.”

There were SO many beautiful Ben and Devi moments this season but Devi taking a pic of Equatorial Guinea was the moment I lost it and started sobbing.
It was the moment when they both knew (consciously or subconsciously) that something had changed between them. 12 years of knowing each other. One moment.

All the Way Across the Country?
Ben Gross x reader
WC: 825 Warnings: None, just fluff. Nothing romantic between Devi and Ben has happened for the sake of this fic (dw I'm team Benvi 100% :)) I do not own any of the dialogue from Never Have I Ever, I am just writing about Ben Gross because no one else will, please do not sue me.
A/N: This is not proofread, and the ending kinda sucks, but I really couldn't figure out how to end it. I hope you still enjoy <3
Tumblr media
It was the night before you and all your friends left for college. Last night, you, Fabiola, and Eleanor had what was supposed to be your last hurrah, but Devi's grandmother invited you guys to her wedding the next night. She actually invited all of Devi's friends. You were excited you were going to have one last night with your friends before everyone left, though there was one person missing: Ben.
Ben left for an internship in New York right after graduation, and while you were happy that he got the opportunity, you wished you had been able to see him again before he left.
While Devi and Ben's relationship was based on academic validation and rivalry, your and Ben's relationship differed. You and Ben were friendly with each other through Devi and Ben's rivalry, (sometimes bothering Devi in the process. "You're supposed to be my right-hand girl not canoodling with my nemesis!). Though Devi and Ben often time butt heads, that somehow never got in between your and Ben's friendship. Eventually, your feeling turned into more than platonic, and you could never tell if Ben felt the same. The two of you would kiss, but neither of you would bring it up ever again. You because you were afraid of ruining the friendship and making it awkward, and he because he was afraid you would reject him.
The two of you had never been great at talking about your feelings.
¤•¤•¤•¤•¤•¤•¤•¤•¤•¤•¤
You and all your friends, sans Devi, were sitting at a table playing a game of never have I ever.
Alright, never have I ever hooked up in my bestie's bed." Eleanor said, her gaze directed at Fabiola.
She and Fabiola met each other's gaze, and Fabiola's mouth hung wide open, a look of faux betrayal on her face.
"Fabiola you better pick up that damn cup," Eleanor said, her eyes narrowed at the girl in question.
Fabiola obliged.
Everyone gasped in surprise while you spoke up.
"Woah, woah, woah, whose bed?" You questioned, hoping that your name didn't fall from her mouth.
"Remember that party Devi had where she two-timed Paxton and he got hit by a car and his swimming career was over?" Fabiola questioned.
Chuckling a bit, you nodded. "Yup, everyone remembers that. How could you not?"
"Me and Eve had a make-out session on her bed."
Yours, Aneesa's, and Paxton's mouths dropped in surprise, while Eleanor and Trent looked at each other excitedly.
"Wow."
"Damn."
"You think she'd be mad if she found out?" Fabiola questioned.
"Well, I guess I should also drink," Trent spoke up. Paxton questioned why.
"I definitely had a couple of solo seshes on your futon." This, once again, made everyone gasp in surprise (and probably a bit of disgust).
While Trent and Paxton were talking about Trent's "solo seshes", Devi came over to you.
"Hey Y/N, I need your help with something in my room."
Thinking it was another way for your friends to sneak alcohol like you, Fab, Eleanor, and Devi did earlier, you didn't question it. You followed her to her room while she was talking nonsense the whole time. As the two of you were rounding the corner to her room, you felt her hands on your back give you a push into her room. Confused, you turned around to question her when you noticed someone in there.
"Ben?" You questioned. "What are you doing here?"
He was standing by Devi's window in a sweatshirt and jeans looking a bit bewildered.
"Uh, yeah, it's weird," he began, " Uh, well, I was in New York, and Devi mentioned that her pati invited all of us to her wedding and all of a sudden, I got this feeling that I needed to tell you that I... like you."
You chuckled lightly. "You flew all across the country to tell me you like me?"
"Well, yeah. Uh," he seemed conflicted with what to say next. "Actually," he chuckled, "I think I love you, y/n."
You stood there, not quite believing this was happening. "What?" You breathed out.
"I love you."
Hearing those words fall from his mouth made you realize this was real. This was Ben Gross, who hoped on a cross-country flight the night before you left for school to tell you he loved you.
"I love you too Ben."
The two of you smiled at each other before he suggested you guys left. You grabbed your things, (that were luckily in Devi's house and not in the tent,) and guided him to your car, driving to his house. The two of you made it to his room before your lips met.
¤•¤•¤•¤•¤•¤•¤•¤•¤•¤•¤
You and Ben spent the night together, deciding to try and date during the semester. You were both going to be in New York-- him obviously at Columbia and you at Cornell, you guys could totally make it work.
And the two of you certainly did.

Devi Vishwakumar's journey has been a wacky one with statistically there being more downs than ups for her, but I believe I don't regret being there for all of it.
Yes there were a shockingly stupid number of moments when I wanted to drown in a pail or choke myself or wished to be put into a medically-induced coma so I wouldn't have to deal with the sheer second-hand embarrassment that came from seeing her high school years play out before me; but these moments are also the ones that have kept me entertained and always anticipating for what will happen next season.
It's bittersweet to see the chaos of Devi's life, and that of her friends and family and foes, come to an end. It's also hopeful. I mean, if Devi can manage to figure her shit out, so can I.
Right?
