WLU Students Earn First Place in Human Resource Management Competition

West Liberty University students from the Gary E. West College of Business took first place honors at the annual conference held Nov. 9 - 10 by the State Council for the Society for Human Resource Management (WVSHRM) and held in Bridgeport, W.Va. The $1,000 cash prize and official plaque were presented to winners Tessa Ullom and Macie Roy. “This was our first participation and I couldn't be more proud of Tessa and Macie,” said Dr. Vishakha Maskey, who is the faculty advisor for the student competitors and a resident of Wheeling. Ullom is a sophomore management major from Wheeling and Roy is a junior majoring in marketing whose hometown is Kingwood, W.Va. “I am so incredibly grateful to have been given the opportunity to compete in this competition! I am currently working in WLU’s Human Resources department and studying management, so it was amazing to have been able to apply all of the concepts and skills I’ve been learning over the past two years to a project like this,” said Ullom. “We were elated when our names were announced at the awards ceremony. It was surreal to see all of our hard work pay off in such an incredible way. Most of all, this win has fueled our motivation to succeed, and we can’t wait to represent the College of Business again next year!” Ullom said. “Tessa and I worked really hard on our project and went into the competition having no expectations. As mentioned, this was our first time competing in this competition, so we really didn’t know what it was going to be like or how good our competitors' projects were. We were shocked to say the least when they called our name for first place. I’m really proud and we’ll definitely be back next year to compete again,” Roy stated. The WVSHRM Classic Case Competition is hosted by the WVSHRM State Council during their Annual Conference. Teams analyze an HR business case study, prepare a solution, and then compete onsite in Bridgeport. “This competition promotes meaningful student engagement within our degree program, to nurture collaborative educational opportunities between colleges and universities in our state and surrounding states, and to foster networking opportunities between students and HR professionals,” Maskey added. Maskey is a professor of Management and Economics in the WLU’s College of Business. Where Is Donna Kay Cloud?

Donna Kay Cloud was born on July 7th, 1997. She is listed as endangered missing from Splendora, Texas as of October 25th, 2016. At the time of her disappearance, she was 19 years old, 5ft tall (some sources state 5’1, and 5’2”), and anywhere from 95-110 pounds (the texas dps website states that she weighed 133 pounds, which is more than likely what she had put on her drivers license). Donna is listed as a white female with brown shoulder length hair on the doe network. She has multiple tattoos, one that says “Faith” on the inside of her right forearm, one on her right collar bone that says, “Love is Enough”, one of a diamond on her left ring her, one of a cross on her index finger also on the left hand, and one of a queen’s crown on the inside of one of her forearms.

So far, her namus profile has had no comparisons or exclusions. She is described as last seen wearing white canvas shoes, a burgundy blouse or t shirt, blue denim jeans with a hole in the right back pocket, and carried a hard case that she called a wallet.

Donna is stated by one source, as having been raised by her paternal grandparents, and having deep rooted issues from her biological parents.

Her father describes her as having been a typical girl raised in the urban country that liked to fish, swim, and ride horses. In an interview, he said that she met her ex boyfriend at the age of 18, which was supposedly the last guy she dated before she went missing. Within the last year before her disappearance, her actions changed, and the ex boyfriend was allegedly “not that great of an influence on her”. He had past usage of drugs, and her father believes that she experimented with drugs.

Donna was a young mother, who had a 4 year old at the time of her disappearance. There does not seem to be any information publicly as to what the relationship was with Donna and her child’s father. At one point, she ended up going to court for custody of her son, and the father of her child wanted temporary custody. When Donna went missing, she technically did not have custody over her son. Her father, Darrell, stated that they were watching her son while she “popped in and out”.

Her parents stated that Donna was the type of person that would hang out with people despite them telling her not to, and she would tell them one thing where she would supposedly hang out, and then directly go to a completely different place.

Before she vanished, she moved back in with her father. Donna had had an abusive ex boyfriend, a man named Blake, and another man had threatened her. An interview with her father stated that the man had left violent voicemails after multiple calls. Her father said that their relationship was strained, but he didn’t believe that she would abandon her family. One source states that the argument with her father was about 400 dollars that she was supposed to pay him. Blake passed a polygraph and was not a suspect. The voicemails from the other man stated that she “was not about this life”, and he was trying to scratch her back, and her his, and that he would have his girlfriend smash her too (whatever that means).

Supposedly, Donna’s father had been in the same jail as one of the two men that picked her up on the night she went missing.

There seems to be multiple stories as to what may have happened to her.

On October 25th, 2016 (though some sources state October 27th), Donna left her home in Splendora to meet at a Texas Roadhouse in Kingwood, Texas, for a blind date. Sources state that she met a man on facebook through mutual friends. Later on, she texted her father that the date went well and the man was super nice, and that she would be over on the 27th between 11-1130 for the family to meet the man.

Investigators on the case stated that there was some type of disagreement with her family before her disappearance. Donna did not have a cell phone to trace for a location, nor did she have credit cards. One source states that she was known to hang out with “unsavory people”, that more than likely would not come to the police with information. Technically, there is no evidence to suggest foul play or that she even went to a blind date at all.

According to the Charley Project, the blind date story is untrue, and Donna’s father asked her to leave after they had an argument. Two men picked her up, and one of them said that he dropped her off safe later that night.

Somewhere around midnight of October 26th, Donna’s facebook accepted friend requests from two men. She was active online in the early hours of October 27th, searching for friends on facebook and search terms on google. She was apparently traveling between Conroe, Texas and Houston, but her trail ended in the Westchase area of Houston just after 1am on the 27th.

A couple of sources state that the men who picked her up were twice her age, and named Carter Meyer and Aubrey Schultz. It is stated that they dropped her off back at her father’s house. Aubrey stated that he would answer one question, which the police asked him “Where is Donna Kay Cloud?”. He then recited parts of Genesis 22 from the bible, where God tests Abraham over the sacrifice over his son Isaac. Supposedly Donna was not planning to stay at her father’s house, since she had been on her phone trying to get someone else to pick her up.

According to her parents, they were able to trace her phone to a trailer park in Spring, Texas. They did not believe that she ever stepped foot in or around the Texas Roadhouse, her father even reviewing the security footage and never seeing any trace from her.

Supposedly, there was a black man named Gerard Hilder (spelling guessed) that joked on a facebook post he killed a girl from Splendora, and he posted a picture of a murder scene. Donna’s father tried to get the police to investigate this and they told him that the picture was from a murder up north, and had nothing to do with Donna. Her parents have stated that there are many points that they feel like the police should have looked into, but didn’t, due to a supposed lack of evidence. Her case was listed as a runaway by the police (as according to the interview with her parents) since her and her father got into a fight before she vanished.

Her parents stated that many of the things that the public “knows” is not based in any sort of fact, and that they don’t appreciate being called liars about Donna’s case. They state that any sort of differences in story are from the details being reported as the story developed.

At some point after her disappearance, Donna’s father set up a go fund me, which was met with backlash as people found that the money was for his car to get new tires. Darrell stated that he was met with cyber bullies despite needing to replace his tires, and being essentially in between jobs. God fund me conducted an investigation, and eventually gave him the 390 dollars raised.

The internet has scrutinized her father especially, mostly due to the discrepancies in the story for her disappearance. There are screenshots from a facebook post that describe what “really” happened, in which her father told her that he needed 400 dollars, or else he would lose his house. Darrell was also pulling strings for when she could even see her son, and he didn’t even come into her life until 2015, a year before she went missing. The images state that she tried to sell some meth, essentially got kicked out by her father, and ended up calling Carter Meyer. Though he states that he dropped her back home, he has also refused a polygraph test, and apparently there hasn’t ever been an official police interview with him.

According to one source, Donna had been hospitalized for an overdose in the past. In screenshots of a long message to her father, she admitted to attempting suicide, due to feeling like she had no one, and the way her father mistreated her, and the restrictions on seeing her son. The message was supposedly sent the day that she went missing. There have never been any affirmations from law enforcement themselves what Donna actually texted her father that day.

Since her disappearance, there is a website dedicated to finding her, called donnakaycloud.com. There is also a private facebook group to the search as well. A twitter page called ‘Bring Donna Home’ was created, though it has not posted anything since 2018. There is also a page called ‘Justice 4 Donna Kay’, which still posts sometimes. Their last post is a link to a petition on change.org that requests a change in detectives to investigate Donna’s case. Her facebook page itself is still viewable. It is managed by her family, more than likely her father. There hasn’t been any public posts since 2018, but interestingly, the facebook page said that she was in a relationship on September 4th, 2016.

What sticks out to me the most, is how her father is so bent on clearing his own name, instead of telling the truth about his relationship, or lack thereof, with his daughter. In the youtube video interview with him and his wife, Darrell stated that for the past year before she went missing, Donna changed and started to fall more into drugs. One of the first things I noticed was how young she was when she got pregnant in the first place, usually teen pregnancies stem from a hard home life. Majority of the people who have read about this case agree that her father is extremely sketchy and seems greedy about the whole situation.

In one of the screen shots describing how her father needed 400 dollars or else he would lose his house, I thought it was suspicious that this amount of money was just about what he got from the go fund me for his tires, which was 390 dollars. I am curious what he really needed with that 400 dollars, and why that number was so crucial.

I most definitely believe that her father knows way more about what happened, if not the truth. I just can’t determine if he killed her, or if she killed herself.
