Steel Samurai: "Steel Samurai is a series of tonkatsu shows that technically started with Signal Samurai (it isnt offically considered part of the franchise but its an import detail to mention) and just continued from there, pretty much every show is about the heroes of Neo Olde Tokyo/Little Olde Tokyo/Etc. fighting badies with what is probably super low stakes, think like monster of the week power rangers type format presumably, the show features actors in large costumes and a heavy use of practical effects (as is typical of tonkatsu shows) there's also stage plays. officially the series has 3 shows but there are ton of other samurai shows mentioned here and there that could be apart of the franchise"

Jammin' Ninja: "The show aired at 8 a.m. on Sundays, the same timeslot as Global Studios's The Nickel Samurai. The star of The Nickel Samurai, Matt Engarde, was a fierce rival of Corrida and was accused and convicted of his murder. As described by Will Powers, the show is a remake of an old film and tells the story of an inept ninja with an enchanting ability to sing. It is with his voice that he manages to charm the Princess Misola, whom he must later rescue from the Muromachi Five. Tragedy strikes when he loses his voice before the third battle."

we never really touched on Usagi's backstory besides that his parents entrusted auntie with taking care of him, so I often wonder, if the show had been given a longer episode run, like maybe 30, 40, maybe even 26 instead of 20 - could we have seen more character backstories in general? Cuz there's also Kitsune, who's backstory we don't know at all, and then Gen and Toshiko, who we see explain their story a bit in bits and pieces through-out the 2 seasons. The fact that Usagi immediately goes back to his auntie, because he knows Hana would be safe from the ninja there, says a lot about how much he trusts his auntie. like the show makes it feel like he might actually be the most fleshed-out of all the characters, but his story is hidden almost as much as Kitsune's. I sorta get the reasoning there - their personalities already serve to tell their story a lot, Usagi is a big fan of his own ancestor and idolizes him, while Kitsune is a street-thief and grifter before we see Usagi bump into her puppet-cart and ruin her evening plans. The audience can get a lot of info out of just context-clues, but Kitsune and Usagi are also characters who are most easy to read at first, so we don't get their backstories really explored or opened the same way as Chizu or Gen, because, I can only guess, those stories don't seem to directly tie into the two larger arcs shown during the 10+10 episodes. But lol, would still like to know more, where are the activity books and character pages? a little side novel maybe? why did the age of flash games with extra info have to end before this show aired lol, if only Netflix spent money on that sort of stuff too, maybe we'd have more info besides just the shows on their own 😂😂😅

More theories and rambling below :D

My theory about Usagi's parents is that they died in one of the wars mentioned by some of the older characters in the show :) Cliche, I know! but it seems to sorta make sense. Could have been many other reasons too of course! Maybe they went to the city to find or do something related to the family business or history, but found their end somehow. One of my other theories is that there were gang wars in Neo Edo, around 10-14 years before the series starts. Maybe they found their end there? We don't even know how old his parents would have been, but judging by auntie's look and how she speaks and acts, maybe she's like, around 60-ish? she has raised her nephew for 15 years, meaning since she was around 45, so maybe her sister/brother would have been around 35-40 something when they died. I personally headcanon that it's his mom, who is the Miyamoto family member here, so maybe his dad really was a farmer by birth and thus, the family did not have a name anymore (they've always preferred staying in hiding after Miyamoto died) and that's why they gave him the name Yuichi Usagi with meaning... related to that earlier Senso-connected theory I had ^^;

The "big" wars, mentioned by Lady Fuwa and Armiral Nochi, being recent makes sense tho. bc even though a 1000 years have gone past and Edo (our real-world Tokyo) in this world has been able to embrace some more advanced tech (courtesy of the Ki-stone), perhaps even alien tech, depending on how you view what happened with Miyamoto Usagi in the show's past, some of the culture and tech has sort of stayed in the Edo period. This is mainly because the show creators and staff wanted to keep both Edo sensibilities as well as modern tech and create an interesting fusion on an artistic and story level. One of the older interviews from last year mentions that the crew was inspired by Stan's 2015 story Senso - that what if Edo got to take all that alien tech and use it for themselves? From one of Stan's answers in this 2022 Popverse interview:

"They took one of my stories – Senso, a miniseries I did where Martians invade feudal Japan – and wondered what if they took some of the technology they got from those Martians, how would it affect their society generations down the line?

That was the premise, with the story taking place in a city called Neo-Edo; with Edo being the old name for Tokyo, the capital of Japan. It also takes a lot from Japanese culture, such as vending machines, pachinko parlors, karaoke bars, and things like that. It integrated everything, the old and the new, and I’m quite happy about that."

So the wars would make sense to be more recent because to me, it seems that maybe with this tech, from a story-world level, they should be further along the line than having just flying cars and airships, right? But wars are one of those things that always and if Edo didn't have those outside influences that we had, maybe they wouldn't have some things, i.e. we don't see phones or trains on the show vs the phone boom we had in the 1980s in the real world and the hi-speed train rails japan is known for now. So they probably would have also missed out on the 60s Space Race between the US and the Soviet Union, which popularized the 1960s "space age aesthetic" for example, which is what we might think of when trying to remember 60s tech and fashion. So the show creates its own retrofuturism in trying to consider all these different elements.

I wonder if they even considered some cultural things that stuck and became popular before and after the US occupation, such as baseball Harley Davidsons and jazz - what would those be like in the world they created around the city of Neo Edo?

We see some semblances of what we could call western influences in how Gen installs new kitchenware in episode 5, how Kitsune looks like she could be a 1970s Harajuku girl, how Admiral Nochi and the Bat Squadron dress etc. It's an interesting balance throughout the show and thinking about it more just makes me more curious about it haha.

Maybe what happened with the Makkine a 1000 years ago is that a few sentries arrived with Kagehito's ship. Because of the surprise Kagehito expresses about the makkine warbotto self-replicating in the present (the s2 warbotto ep), we can surmise that they didn't back then, so they didn't replicate. Did they leave any ships? In the first season, Kagehito's ship is underground and covered by hundreds of years of rubble and rock. The Mogura Gang helping him then, actually find gold before they find his ship. So if any ships did come through with him those 1000 years ago, it seems that they did not "park" into the same place, or, likely that whatever happened, they were used up by locals.

The show is also quite fast-paced in reality, as we can see from how each episode jumps from POV to POV, or topic to topic and we get a lot of info in a short time, so to me it seems that the story crew REALLY crunched every bit of important info, story or jokes into the episodes, but just, didn't have more time to show or do anything about Usagi's parents.

lol what I'm doing to avoid more brainworms like this is to.... I guess continue writing my fanfic where I try to solve this (the main storyline from the comic i posted haha), but I also realized while writing this... I am waiting to see if I can get one of the new books coming out this or next year that bridges the stories/worlds between Yokai Hunter and Space Usagi, to see if there might be some new connections to be from there about Space Usagi in general, but maybe there could be something there nodding back to SR as well? maybe the new character is inspired by that or somehow bridges those things? lol a fan can hope ;D

Kondo: I decided to some extent in the planning stage。 When I decided to make eight boss characters, then eight ninjas... I was inflating like this number..。

In "Ninja and Haruido", you wanted to make a composition by saying "There is a boss for each chapter"。Defeat the boss and go to the next chapter。Like Rockman。So I'm really aware of "building up the boss character"。First I thought about the backbone of the boss character, then the backbone of the ninja... ーMr. Ishiyama, how do you create your works?

Ishiyama: I haven't changed since I was jumping, and I feel live with my eyelashes。

Two encounters and first impressions

ーYou had a hearty discussion about manga when you first met! What was your first impression of Fujito Chika, Ishiyama-san?

-In June 2019, a year after the two of you met, Fujito posted ``Ninjas and Yakuza'' on DAYS NEO.What made it happen?

Kondo: At that time, I was a Gakun with a jump contract。

I was a senior student and worked in the Ranobe department of Kodansha, and the person said in half a joke from the front, "If you don't jump, do you draw at Kodansha?" After contacting "I was cut out, I was supposed to drink immediately."。

Steel Samurai: ran for seven seasons, Power’s trial happened during what was meant to be the filming of the 8th (2008-2016) (This bit is very much non-canon, it only has the one season in-universe if I’ve got my facts straight, but I wanted to have the space a longer-running series would give me to play with!)

Pink Princess sequel series (2016-17)

Season 3 of the show     mixed things up a bit by moving the location around every few episodes as     the Steel Samurai and Pink Princess pursed the Evil Magistrate across Neo     Olde Japan. This was the season that revealed that other cities beyond Neo     Olde Tokyo have their own defenders, including the Silver Swordsman,     protector of Neo Olde Osaka (only around for a few episodes, he’s a fan     favorite and returned as a reoccurring background character in season 7). 

In season 6 the series began to explore some of the more mystical/spiritual elements of the Neo Olde world, a topic previously touched on only lightly in the show and mostly explored in supplementary material, including source books and novelizations/graphic novelizations

 There are multiple ‘Samurai paths’ within the series, similar to how there are different styles of kung fu, these ones based upon the Asian elements of Earth, Wood, Fire, Water, and Metal.

 The Steel Samurai follows the Metal path, naturally 

The Pink Princess follows the Wood path, which is slightly more mystical (and also has flashier special effects)

While the Steel Samurai and Pink Princess both have non-powered forms, due to Will Powers’s reluctance to show his face on camera, the Steel Samurai’s face has never been revealed in any format - it is always cast in shadow or off-frame or somehow obscured

There are so many fan theories around this - most people are unaware of Will’s stance on the issue

Due to preferring not to show his face, it’s actually almost impossible to get an autograph off of Will Powers simply because he doesn’t really go to conventions or signing     sessions and stuff - you basically have to luck out and run into him in person and be carrying something he can sign

 The Pink Princess’s non-powered form is actually bald. This was not part of her original character design, but, a few weeks before they were set to begin filming, a friend of the actress playing Pink Princess began chemo, and the actress shaved her head out of solidarity and support, didn’t even warn anyone, just feckin’ risked her job and shaved it. She figured she’d either get fired or have to wear a wig.

In a shocking twist, instead of doing either, the director just decided to roll with it, they reworked her costume design a bit, and it’s become one of the Pink Princess’s signature characterizations that she is bald by choice.

There are ninjas in the Steel Samurai world, they mostly don’t get along with the samurai 

Samurai in this series will work with mystics, priestesses, and the like, but tend to be a bit suspicious of mystical arts outside those included in the Samurai paths

While the original show is live-action, there have been both a cartoon and an anime remake, each putting a slightly different spin on various events and characters

 In a wild twist, they came out the same year. The fans went insane.

 And that’s the baseline set of headcanons I run with when doing Steel Samurai stuff!

Reference List for amiibo Fighter Names (Set 2)

13) Ganondorf : Going Alone - A reference to the start of the original Legend of Zelda, the good ol’ “IT’S DANGEROUS TO GO ALONE TAKE THIS!”  And the fact that, up to Smash 4, Ganondorf did not use his sword, despite clearly having one in his victory poses from Melee.  Many jokes were of course made about this, this is one of them.  Granted, now that he HAS his sword in Ultimate, this one’s a bit outdated, so might have to see if this one needs a revamp.  I’d still be using the Smash 4 visual style though since alas, we didn’t get an updated amiibo figure for him of his OoT style.

14) Greninja : Kerobusa - A play on kero, Japanese for the sound a frog makes, and Hayabusa, the last name of Ryu Hayabusa, star of the Ninja Gaiden series.  I wanted to parody the cutscene from the original Ninja Gaiden where Ryu is standing on a cliffside, overlooking the tower of the big bad, Jacquio.  Given Greninja was introduced in the Kalos games, I subbed in Lumiose City and its prominent central tower for the scenery.  The writing on the nameplate is from the title screen of the original Ninja Gaiden.

15) Ice Climbers : ParkaPower - Not really any sort of major reference here, I mostly stuck to the source game for this one, and just referenced that they wear parkas.  Because dangit, their parkas are adorable.  A notable difference between my version and Neo’s, he used the seal version of the normal enemy from Ice Climber, whereas I used the Topi as it’s what I was more used to.

16) Ike : SluggaBeef - This name actually came from WanStan, who donated this particular amiibo to me.  Back with the earlier amiibos, I offered an incentive for anyone who donated a Smash amiibo to allow them to name the character, and they were the only one who donated a figure and actually took me up on that offer.  Their idea was essentially just how he swings his sword with the power of a baseball bat for some hefty hits, so we played around with the idea and went with making a full-on baseball card out of it.  The 24 refers to the release number of his amiibo.

17) Jigglypuff : J-Pop - A reference to j-pop style music, and well, the fact that her name starts with a J.  And she’s a balloon, so those can pop.  Multi leveled references!  This was actually the first card I drew for the project.  I originally asked Neo if he could just like, polish up my drawings with better colors and shading, and he surprised me by going full tilt and making his own version of my rough sketch.  And thus the project was born.  This went through some various bits of retooling, such as the Love Ball being replaced with a Fairy Energy symbol on the nameplate, and also revising her hairstyle a bit.

18) Kirby : dyson - Dyson, much like Kirby, is actually a brand of vacuum cleaner.  Dyson’s commercials were famous for the designer being shown working on blueprints, saying things like “I just think vacuums should work properly,” things like that.  Since it’s his most powerful vacuum power to date, I put in a Hypernova plant on his desk.

19) Link : HeroOfAges - While a little outdated visually since we now have BotW Link as the Smash rep, again, we’re in that impasse where we didn’t get a BotW style Link amiibo specifically for Smash.  So he’s still got his Smash 4 look here.  With this one, I just wanted to reference the various Links and LoZ games throughout time.  So here we have referenced Ocarina of Time (Ocarina itself), Link to the Past (Magic Mirror), Link Between Worlds (Ravio’s bracelet), Twilight Princess (Fused Shadow), Hyrule Warriors (Link’s scarf), Skyward Sword (Beetle), the original Legend of Zelda (8-bit Wooden Sword), and the Oracles games (Harp of Ages).  Neo added some extra details on each reference as well.

20) Little Mac : Jr.Whopper - Basically just a play on, if Little Mac is to Big Mac, what would you call the Whopper equivalent?  Burger King for a long while was my go-to for fast food, though these days I probably prefer Sonic.  Still, the joke was too good to pass up.  Still amused Neo snuck the actual Burger King “King” mascot on there on his version, haha.  I have no idea why I had so much trouble drawing Little Mac’s hair, I was probably way overthinking it...

21) Lucario : AttackTurn - Yu-Gi-Oh! is one TCG I have a tendency to return to every now and again.  Given the Egyptian theming it has, it seemed a good fit for Lucario, who has an Anubis kind of feel to him visually.  Thus I set about trying to find a card that made sense as a reference to how Lucario works.  “Psychic Blade” was the best I could find.  You equip it to a monster, then pay life points in multiples of 100, up to a max of 2000.  The equipped monster then gains that much Attack and Defense.  Thus, somewhat similar to the concept of Lucario’s aura, as he gains more attack power the more damage he’s taken.  For the final card, we changed the name to “Aura of Psychic Blade” to more reference his aura.  Neo added a lot of clever references in the “card info” parts of this one, such as having the Pokémon artist shown as the illustrator, a card number referencing the Hoenn games where Lucario originated, all nice little easter eggs.

22) Lucas : Tomato Kid - Given the long time wait for an official localization of Mother 3 (I forget, DID one ever get announced?), fans took it upon themselves to make their own translation.  One of the more prominent ones I’d heard about was done by someone going by Tomato.  And thus, since in Earthbound we had Orange Kid and Apple Kid, we now have Tomato Kid.  There’s not too much else to detail here.  I literally copied a screenshot of Mother 3 pixel by pixel in Visio Home for this.  I couldn’t resist having the frog in the car, it’s just too weirdly cute.

23) Lucina : #FixFate - I admittedly don’t have a whole lot of Fire Emblem knowledge, so I had to just go with what references I could pull from.  Lucina’s game came out fairly close to around the same time as that Fire Emblem / SMT crossover type game.  Tokyo Mirage Sessions I think it was?  All I really knew about it was some of the visual style of the colored shadows walking around.  Given Lucina does have some time travel elements to her, going through time to fix her family’s past, her being in modern day Shibuya and texting on a smartphone doesn’t seem too out of the question... (okay it probably totally is but work with me here).  I snuck in a Persona 4 reference with the Calorie Magic ad, as well as a more general SMT reference with the Jack Frost phone charm.  Neo suggested adding a Splatoon ad in the background on the Shibuya tower.

24) Luigi : ReaL2401 - This is a reference to a big ol’ rumor inducing message people claimed to see on the star statue in the back garden of Peach’s castle in Super Mario 64.  Supposedly, the plaque on it said “L is Real 2401.”  People thought it was a hint to Luigi existing somewhere in the game.  Later, more well defined images showed the plaque to just likely say “Eternal Star.”  So I had the idea of Luigi leaving the message as a graffiti tag.

Art History Reader: Edo Period Japan

  The power of Edo period art can best be summed up with this quote:

  “From the age of 6, I had a mania for drawing the shapes of things. When I was 50 I had published a universe of designs. But all I have done before the age of 70 is not worth bothering with. At 75 I'll have learned something of the pattern of nature, of animals, of plants, of trees, birds, fish and insects. When I am 80 you will see real progress. At 90 I shall have cut my way deeply into the mystery of life itself. At 100, I shall be a marvelous artist. At 110, everything I create; a dot, a line, will jump to life as never before. To all of you who are going to live as long as I do, I promise to keep my word. I am writing this in my old age. I used to call myself Hokusai, but today I sign myself 'The Old Man Mad About Drawing.”

You know the Edo period, you just don't know you know it.  You've seen it on shower curtains, mugs, dish towels, socks….it's The Great Wave by Hokusai. It’s everywhere. What you most likely don’t know is that The Great Wave is as much about Mt. Fuji as it is about the wave. The great wave is framing Mount Fuji off in the not-so-far distance. This print is from a series of prints known as the "36 views of Mount Fuji." The Edo period was obsessed with Mt Fuji.  Edo period artists were also interested in portraying theater, sumo wrestling, and beautiful women, capturing the life of the Yoshiwara (red-light) district of the city of Edo (which is now Tokyo). The term for this is “Ukiyo-e”, which translates to "picture[s] of the floating world." It was a style that lasted for over 200 years. 

  The Edo, which was approximately from the 1600s to the middle of the 1800s, was a time when the arts flourished in Japan. Theater known as kabuki and the visual arts were in high demand, which is quite odd because the Edo was also the time of the Shogunate, a hereditary military dictatorship. That’s those rascally Shogun and Ninja warriors we love some much in our movies. The Shogun ran a tight ship. They enforced a policy of no contact with the outside world and maintained an extremely strict social hierarchy. If you were a farmer, you and your family would always be farmers. If you were born into a craftsman family you were destined to be a craftsman, and so on for every social class. Craftsmen were just one step higher than merchants, who were at the bottom of the heap. You guessed who was at the top of the hierarchy, right? The Shogun, of course. 

  One of the major art forms was the woodblock print. In mini-factories of art, artists produced images, then master carvers carved them in wood, and master printers performed their magic with ink brush and handmade paper. Edo period artists cranked out prints to fulfill a huge demand for images. Artists like Hiroshige and Hokusai fulfilled this need by creating amazing series of prints with titles like "100 views of Edo" or "36 views of Mt Fuji." Why such a high demand for Mt Fuji, you ask? Mt Fuji was (and is) sacred to the Japanese. Pilgrimages to the top of Mt Fuji are an important part of the Neo-Confucian pattern of life, both during the Edo Period and now. The pilgrimage is so important that small versions of Mt Fuji were built for those who could not make the actual pilgrimage. These stand-in Mt Fuji’s have a great name, “Fujizuka,” and there are over one hundred of these Fujizuka scattered across modern-day Tokyo, most of them made during the Edo Period. 

  Since a majority of the visual arts during the Edo period were printed, they were both affordable and highly portable. They started to find their way to Europe via Dutch merchants in the seventeenth century, but it was not until the nineteenth century that they would end up having a deep impact on artists in the West. Following the opening of trade with Japan in 1858, artists in France and England like Mary Cassatt and James McNeill Whistler combined western printmaking traditions in the Intaglio print process with an Edo period compositional flair. They adopted a flattening of space, strong diagonal lines, and an abstract use of color.  Van Gogh believed Japan was a Mecca for artists, and Monet considered the Japanese masters to be at the top of the artistic hierarchy. We call this influence Japonisme.

  Edo period craftsmanship carried over into the next movement of art in Japan, called the Meiji, which lasted until Emperor Meiji died in 1912. Following the opening up of Japan to cultural, political, and technological ideas from other cultures, Japan was at this time transforming from a largely feudal society to a modern, industrial one. The art from the Meiji period reflects this cross-pollination between Western and Eastern cultures. Gone are the dynamic, otherworldly views of Mount Fuji and Edo as Japanese painters began incorporating Western styles of painting into their work. This Western influence persisted even amidst the conservative desire for traditional Japanese nihonga paintings. Meanwhile craftsmen, no longer churning out armor and swords for the samurai class, began making decorative objects for pure enjoyment, while typically Chinese subject matter, such as dragons and other animals, became popular across media.

Netflix, ecco quando usciranno Neon Genesis Evangelion, Kengan Ashura e Saint Seiya

Netflix ha usato il palco dell’AnimeJapan 2019 per svelare le date di uscita di tre serie il cui arrivo sulla piattaforma era atteso per i prossimi mesi. 

“Neon Genesis Evangelion”, la celebre serie diretta da Hideaki Anno nel 1995 e prodotta da Gainax e Tatsunoko Production debutterà sulla piattaforma il 21 giugno. Precedentemente Netflix aveva annunciato che la serie sarebbe stata accompagnata anche dai film “Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth” e “Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion”, ma il nuovo comunicato non ne ha fatto cenno.

L’incontro di un padre e di un figlio che non si vedono da anni, Gendo e Shinji Ikari, si trasforma nel teatro di una guerra spaventosa. La battaglia del genere umano contro le creature denominate Angeli è giocata con armi di nuova concezione (gli Evangelion) e al contempo antichissime (l’intelletto dei tecnocrati che manipola i sentimenti dei soldati al fronte). Un finale ben diverso da quello che Shinji, nel giorno in cui fa ritorno a Neo Tokyo-3 per riabbracciare il genitore, aveva immaginato. Sconfitta la tentazione di scappare da se stesso, il “pilota della speranza” scopre un mondo nuovo, popolato da cognizioni apparentemente inconciliabili con l’individuo che era prima di approdare alla Nerv… e poiché fuggire dalla dimensione del sapere non gli è più concesso, intraprende la strada della cieca obbedienza: l’obiettivo è assecondare le ambizioni del padre, eseguire gli ordini della signorina Katsuragi, compiacere le aspettative della dottoressa Ritsuko, incoraggiare le illusioni dei compagni di scuola. Ma il destino di Shinji Ikari è un copione redatto 14 anni fa oppure è un capitolo di storia ancora tutto da scrivere?

Nel 2006 Anno ha fondato lo studio Khara, lanciando la tetralogia di film definita Rebuild of Evangelion, che partendo dagli stessi presupposti reinterpreta la storia della serie, apportando pesanti modifiche e introducendo sviluppi completamente nuovi. “Evangelion: 1.0 - You Are [Not] Alone”, “Evangelion: 2.0 - You Can [Not] Advance” e “Evangelion: 3.0 - You Can (Not) Redo” hanno fatto il loro debutto rispettivamente nel 2007, 2009 e 2012. In Italia sono distribuiti in home video da Dynit che assieme a Nexo Digital li ha proiettati anche al cinema.  La pellicola conclusiva “Evangelion 3.0+1.0″ (Shin Evangelion Gekijou-ban :||) uscirà in Giappone nel corso del 2020.

“SAINT SEIYA: I Cavalieri dello Zodiaco”, nuovo adattamento del celebre manga di Masami Kurumada, edito in Italia da Star Comics, debutterà sulla piattaforma 19 luglio.

La prima stagione della serie sarà composta da 12 episodi, andando a coprire dall’arco narrativo del Torneo Galattico fino all’arrivo dei Cavalieri d’Argento.

Saint Seya: I Cavalieri dello Zodiaco segue le vicende di giovani e promettenti guerrieri noti con il nome di “Cavalieri”, protettori giurati della reincarnazione della dea greca Atena. Ognuno dei protagonisti indossa una potente armatura ispirata alla costellazione zodiacale che rappresenta e viene chiamato Cavaliere dello Zodiaco. I cavalieri aiutano Atena nella sua battaglia contro i potenti dei dell’Olimpo, decisi a distruggere l’umanità.

Il progetto è animato in computer grafica presso lo studio Toei Animation e a dirigerlo è Yoshiharu Ashino (Tweeny Witches, Cross Ange: Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo). La sceneggiatura è stata supervisionata da Eugene Son (Duel Masters) che ha diretto il team di scrittori composto da: Benjamin Townsend; Shannon Eric Denton; Thomas F. Zahler; Joelle Sellner; Travis Donnelly; Thomas Pugsley; Saundra Hall; Shaene Siders e Patrick Rieger. Terumi Nishii (Le Bizzarre Avventure di JoJo: Diamond is Unbreakable) si è occupato del character design, mentre le armature sono ad opera di Takashi Okazaki (Afro Samurai, Batman Ninja).

“Kengan Ashura”, la serie animata basata sul manga scritto da Yabako Sandrovich e disegnato da Daromeon, debutterà globalmente su Netflix il 31 luglio.

Il progetto è diretto da Seiji Kishi (Assassination Classroom, Tsuki ga Kirei) e prodotto presso lo studio Larx Entertainment, il design dei personaggi è adattato da Kazuaki Morita (Danganronpa 3, Classroom of the Elite) e la sceneggiatura è curata da Makoto Uezu (KonoSuba, Yuki Yuna is a Hero). 

Sin dal periodo Edo in Giappone vengono organizzati dei tornei che vedono combattenti affrontarsi a mani nude per conto di avidi imprenditori e commercianti senza scrupoli. Al termine di questi scontri fra gladiatori, chi vince prende tutto. Ouma Tokita, soprannominato “Ashura”, entra nel giro sbaragliando ogni avversario e attirando l'attenzione di grandi industriali, tra cui il presidente del Gruppo Nogi, Hideki.

L’opera originale è stata serializzata sulla app Manga ONE dal 2012 e si è conclusa lo scorso agosto, ma dal 17 gennaio l’autore ne ha lanciato un nuovo arco narrativo.

Question no1: Do you have a YouTube channel?

Question no2: Since you are a music producer, what exactly is it that you do?

A: Some people would consider a music producer as one of the many aspects of either writing music, getting people together, motivate recording artists etc, but most of all PRODUCE A GOOD SOUNDING PRODUCT. How to get there is all up to the Music Producer. In my case, I write, produce and master some of my products if the client needs it. Otherwise I just produce music, provide stems and let the company mix and master the tracks for me so they fit into the product nice and sweet!

Question 3: What instruments do you play?

A: I started out with piano at the age of 5, then getting into the saxophones from age 9. Once I got into music college I also picked up drums. Later I also started singing, thanks to a vocal-coach. I also picked up guitar and bass (self-taught). I also got myself into Wind-synthesizers, owning a Yamaha WX-11/WT-11, a AKAI EWI-USB (you see that one in most of my wind-synthesizer demos) and an AKAI EWI 4000s. But producing, I main keyboards for all kinds of orchestral programing, meanwhile my EWI takes care of all the brass/winds in my arrangements, or adding that on top of other sample-libraries/synth-engines.

Question 4: Why did you become a computer-game composer?

A: My life-time goal is that I want to become a film-composer. But the game music was just one of those things that just happened out of nowhere. But one thing for sure, writing “adaptive” music that changes according to the player’s action is more difficult than writing music for a linear-experiences that movies are. And I feel, once you mastered the “adaptive”-music writing, all other prospect of writing for other mediums is a walk in the park. So whenever I write a computer-game soundtrack, I always try to bring something from the films I grew up with into my compositions eg. textural techniques, tension harmonies or rhythm ideas.

Question 5: Who’s your favorite composer?

A: This one is hard, since I learned early on, having idol’s will only break your spirit if some dirt comes up or hearsay makes them go south, so I would say I have no favorites because they all are special or contribute to my writing. And the term composer is such a wide window to pick from. But if we say the composers that have influenced me in my writing, let me write you a list in no particular order.

Albert B. Rubinstein - film-composer Blue Thunder, War Games, The Hard Way (Had the chance to speak with him before he passed away earlier this year.) One of the very early adapters of Hybrid Action Music since 1983. Mixing orchestras with electronics.

Jerry Goldsmith - The king of ACTION Scores of the 80′s. Also good at romantic and sci-fi colors in composition. Very influential on my work on Resident Evil 6. Took a lot of inspiration from Rambo II and Total Recall which I would say are super cool!

Basil Poledouris - Conan, Robocop, Starship Troopers. Do I need to say more? I’m friend’s with his daughter Zoe too. Loved his work and approach to his Hybrid Score for Robocop.

John Williams - We all know who he is, but he was essential in my writing on Resident Evil 6 when I came up with the theme for Neo Umbrella Assault track. 

Hans Zimmer - It’s in recent years I’ve felt he has gotten his unique voice, starting in 2003 with The Last Samurai. The rest is history with Batman, his minimalistic approach to the music in Inception and Interstellar. Always finding new ways to really explore the sonic space or just feelings.

Sean Callery: 24. Jack Bauer kept me on the edge of my seat through all the seasons. If it wasn’t for Sean, I don’t think I’d be writing stealth music for Resident Evil 6.

Don Davis: He started out on the Hulk - the TV-series, but took everyone with storm with his fantastic score for all the Matrix movies and his collaboration with Juno Reactor.

Harold Faltermeyer: Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop, his unique way of shifting gears through all the movies he composed for, from hard-rock to popcorn electronica. His sense for quirky melodies and chord progressions are awesome.

David Holmes - Ocean’s 11. He has kind of a cool DJ-approach to his film-score/soundtracks. Makes him very unique.

Alan Silvestri - Predator, The Avengers and Back to the Future. Love his militaristic orchestrations. His rhythms and textures.

And not forgotten: Vangelis, James Horner, John Murphy and Danny Elfman.

Question 6: If you had the chance to write music for a famous game or series of games, which one would you like to make?

A: I’ve felt that cinematic games with deep intrigue and action favors me, so I’d say Splinter Cell or Max Payne.

Question 7: You said you wanted to be a film composer, what movies would you like to write for?

A: It’s almost the same as the games, but since it’s linear I don’t mind the movies to be even more bigger in scope. I was told that there would be a Cowboy Bebop live action film made in the 2000′s with Keanu Reeves as Spike. Maybe today he would be a producer for sure. I also love sci-fi and heist movies.

Question 8: Which movie director would you like to work with?

A: Very tough question. Every director has their music collaborator with them since film-school, so in this case this is just a dream. I really enjoy Edgar Wright’s style. Neill Blomkamp would be awesome to work with. His unique cyberpunk style to weapons and robots are awesome. Loved District 9. I just hope he gets to direct the next Alien movie. Then we have the Russo Bros. Would love to work with all of them.

Question 9: Of all the projects you’ve had so far, which one has been your favorite?

A: I believe Resident Evil 6 put me on the map for sure. It was like the biggest project I’ve ever worked on that had so many deadlines and milestones. But once we were done, I felt very proud. But more recently, being a part of Street Fighter lore with music for Street Fighter V is now the biggest part my life, providing new original content to new characters in season 2 for Ed the boxer, Menat the Fortuneteller and Zeku the Ever-changing Ninja.

Question 10: How did you get involved with writing music for these big titles say for example the most recent one, Street Fighter V?

A: First I thought I got to work on it due to my previous involvement with the Capcom team who did Resident Evil 6. However, this was not the case since the Resident Evil team is located in Osaka and the Street Fighter team is in Tokyo. I guess it was word of mouth that got me the chance to write music to one of the new characters, Ed the boxer, which was going to be a one-shot deal. One song, that’s it. However, they kept calling me back and asked me to write music for many other characters to come. I’ve felt Capcom has been letting me do my thing and they trust me completely and we have a nice working relationship now which I hope will continue for a long time.
