Kacy - 207 - Vanishing Act

Hellooo. First post. Bit nervous. My thoughts on Kacy in the recent episode. I initially posted this on Twitter and am not finished with making gifs yet, so this is pretty much mostly an all words post.

I really enjoyed the episode overall. I was very bummed that Lucy will be gone for 4 months and Kacy will be apart. They are in a good place and the timing really sucks and I'm still very much in my feels about the beach scene, especially near the end. Honestly, I wasn't very tuned in to the plot because my focus and attention was on how Lucy and Kate were feeling. How Lucy was struggling about not wanting to be apart from Kate because she really just wants to 'sit on a hill' with her and not go on any adventures, but at the same time it's also a great opportunity for her career.

I understand and can see why some people say it doesn't make sense. Lucy's - 'feet, water, death' - literally going into the middle of the dark abyss for 4 months for a position she applied for and was rejected when her and Kate were broken up - I know there are feelings about that as well because old wounds were brought back, plus the indications of Lucy's action. Lucy reacted and from personal experience, reactions lack a thought process. While it makes no sense that Lucy would apply for a position that keeps her on a ship for x amount of months, it also makes sense at the same time because when you’re hurting, decisions can be irrational. She was running away from her feelings and I guess a ship made sense at the time. Makes me think maybe that's also why she chose to come to Hawaii - maybe to get as far away from her family as possible?

Kate. Her feelings when she found out why Lucy applied for the position definitely brought up old wounds, even more so because Kate had no idea and the reason she applied was because of Kate. I hear you - the people who are saying Kate sacrificed her career to stay close to Lucy - choosing Lucy over her career - and now Lucy's choosing her career over Kate and is off to take a position that's going to benefit her career? Back in season one, they were broken up and Kate made that decision on her own because that is what she wanted. The job in DC, compared to the position on the ship, is permanent. The situations, contexts and emotions involved are very different. Lucy will be back and they'll be together in the same place again. It just really sucks being long distance. We have seen that their relationship has grown and how they’re able to talk to one another later on at the beach shows that.

The beach scene. I'm happy that they were able to talk openly, honestly and showed vulnerability. Lucy saying (and essentially calling herself out), "it's hard for me believing that because I don't know if you've noticed, I have trust issues" and Kate knowing that after she tells Lucy "I'm not going anywhere" is, I have to admit, not what I expected. I love that though - they're able to talk to each other like that and this is a decision made by both of them. Kate here, is definitely the best girlfriend for supporting Lucy and having her best interest at heart even though it hurts that they’ll be apart for four months very soon. The reassurances she gives her. Definitely the best.

I’ll miss Lucy and Kacy scenes, but I’m very much looking forward to Kate working with Kai in the next episode. Maybe they’ll have some chagaccinos while working on AJ’s case since Kai seemed to have liked it? 😆

Apparently writing a text post once has created a monster in me, but here we go again. 😂

I saw the other complaint about Lucy taking the job is that the show didn’t do a good job at showing her actually wanting the job and instead they made it seem like it was just a “good career move.” And I have a few thoughts.

First of all, I honestly disagree. I thought the show did a great job at showing Lucy’s conflict. (But we are all entitled to our own interpretation) She says she was excited to be “the sheriff of a floating 5000 person town” on the ship, but life is different now. She even told Ernie she was excited about it- “all that power and responsibility.” Her primary concern was always her relationship with Whistler, which was reinforced in every conversation. Even telling Jesse that Whistler was her main/only reason not to take it. Sure there’s the boat aspect but my bet is she made her peace with that when she applied. Because that was a known from the beginning. Getting back together with Kate was not.

Second- So What? Unfortunately being an adult in the working world means you can’t always have your cake and eat it too. I’ve had to make decisions that weren’t great personally but professionally was good for me. (And I know the opposite happens as well for people) It sucks but it’s part of life and work. Especially in the government. Now add on top of that Lucy is an openly queer POC woman in a government job. That’s 3 minorities, if not more potentially. She likely has to work twice as hard, probably even 4 times harder in order to get even a hint of the opportunities others have. So turning down a job like this? Likely wouldn’t look good for her. It also could potentially look bad for Tennant who vouched for her and is the first woman American NCIS SAC. Plus it’s only 4 months, not a permanent assignment.

So thus ends my thoughts on why I really don’t think that’s the most… logical? complaint. And I don’t mean that offensively, again we’re all entitled to our positions/interpretations. It just seems to me that if Yasmine had to be gone, taking Lucy down this path is realistic to life choices we all have to make. And also shows how great of a place Kate and Lucy are in that they listen to each other, and that Kate was ready to push Lucy towards it because she gets how important it is, and knows they’re strong enough for it. Because again, it’s only 4 months. And kind of poetically is about the same amount of time they were broken up.

ngl seeing the way some fans have been speaking on yasmine’s absence this season has been so upsetting like you have grown adults out here really wishing for her to get kicked off her other show (and being disappointed that she isn’t! in this economy!) because some unfortunate scheduling conflicts got in the way of filming s2. it’s one thing to miss your favorite character, but it’s another to wish for someone to lose a job over it (tacking on “glad she stays booked and busy though” at the end of these posts hardly makes it come across any better) 

it’s not like you constantly see poc actors getting work that doesn’t force them to be anything more than stereotypical one-dimensional villains of the week or guest characters that get maybe 5 lines, let alone getting booked consistently, so it should be a good thing seeing an actor you like (especially a woc actor) staying busy and having other projects to work on (and she’s not the only one on the show to do that obviously, they’re actors they gotta make a living outside of the show too)

and there’s also people who talk about lucy's absence like it’s the writers’ fault that she’s not in the episodes, like it was the writers’ decision to just randomly write off one of their regulars and one half of their main couple for half a season. i think it’s fair to say that the writing has been hit-or-miss for s2 (and it’s definitely shakier in episodes where lucy’s absent) and you’re allowed to be dissatisfied with that and critique it, but there’s a difference between critiquing the writing and looking for someone to blame (critiquing the story reasons they’ve written for lucy being out/lack of lucy mentions in the interim vs. blaming the writer’s for leaving lucy out of an episode when yasmine just wasn’t available to film).

i know everyone’s frustrated and afraid of a repeat of s2 where she’s gone for half the season, but that doesn’t excuse anyone from acting like this lol. she’s a series regular, i doubt they’d let her continually miss half the season every season especially for a show she’s not a main character on.
