More Than Meets the Eye #28- I Sure Hope Y’all Like Megatron

“Dark Cybertron” is finally over! Woohoo!

Who’s ready for a return to hijinks and mild peril?

I know this guy is!

Hold on a second-

We start our foray into Season 2 of MTMTE with a little meta-humor-

-and then it’s right into the swing of things, as Brainstorm uses the thin, fragile wine glass of faction-based morality to hold his personal need to make instruments of violence. Nautica disapproves, but then why wouldn’t she? She’s not been steeped in the militant ideologies of the Autobots for millions of years.

It’s six months after the convoluted events of “Dark Cybertron”, and our beloved ship, the Lost Light, is back on track for the Knight Quest. Nautica’s joined the crew, which is neat, but there are far more interesting things going on.

Like Rung actually doing his fucking job for once.

Wow, look at that little creamsicle man go.

It would seem that in the last half-year (by Earth standards) Megatron’s somehow gotten himself into the esteemed position of Captain of the Lost Light. This likely means that Rodimus has been defeated in battle, or perhaps fucked off on yet another space yacht to run away from his responsibilities. I suppose the narrative will have to fill us in on just what exactly happened.

Or, at least, I hope it does. Wouldn’t be a terribly good story if I had to guess on how exactly this dude’s in charge of a whole-ass Autobot crew.

Yes, yes, I know he switched sides, but goddammit, it takes a little more than saying sorry and changing your wardrobe to excuse the murder of half of NYC.

I mean, we can do both. Both is an option. I’ll break out The Communist Manifesto right now, let’s fuckin’ gooooooooo-

Six months prior to Megatron’s therapy appointment, Rodimus is ready to high-tail it off of Cybertron yet again. This is because, as established in previous posts, Cybertron kinda sucks butt. He bursts into the meeting Optimus Prime called- even though he’s really not leader of anything anymore, Starscream is- bids everyone farewell, and is about to run back out of the room when he’s stopped.

Turns out that the populace of Cybertron want Megatron to stand trial. That makes sense, given what all he’s done. Of course, the Autobot pals we’ve got in the room want to skip due process and go straight to the part where Megatron pays through the nose for the last four million years.

Which doesn’t feel terribly heroic or good guy-ish, but I think by this point you’ve probably caught on to the fact that everyone in IDW Transformers is morally gray at BEST.

Because Megatron’s had a rough time the last few years, in relation to his bodily integrity, spark extraction- that thing that High Command lied about in relation to Overlord- isn’t an option. It would just kill him dead.

Uh, excuse me? Optimus Prime, sir? Monsieur Premier?

Guess Optimus hasn’t been keeping up with exRiD.

Anyway, yeah, since Tyrest fucked off in “The Sound of Breaking Glass” and also tried to commit a genocide, we’re gonna need someone to cast judgement.

Course, a military trial isn’t exactly ideal, but as long as it’s open to the public, it should be fine.

Probably.

Anyway, Prowl’s also going to help. Ultra Magnus has been assigned the task of representing Megatron in court, a job which he’s positively delighted to have, if his face is any indication.

The gang breaks for lunch, and Rodimus and Optimus touch base on how the Knight Quest is going.

Because Rodimus’ half of the Matrix had the map for finding the Knights of Cybertron in it, they’re gonna have to go with Plan B.

Oh fuck yes, I love Plan B!

Unfortunately, finding the ideal romantic partner for all Cybertronians is going to have to wait until after the trial, because Optimus really wants Rodimus here for this. Though perhaps there’s a way to make things move a little faster…

Back in the present, Megatron’s had just about enough of Rung being a psychiatry joke, and is about to walk out of his appointment. Ravage is here, which is neat. Rung asks Megatron about the three most important people in his life, and how he met them. One of these people is, funnily enough, Rung.

Rung, if you’ll recall, was thrown into Megatron and Impactor’s table at Maccadams waaaaaay back in The Transformers #22, the first issue of the IDW run that Roberts wrote solo. It would seem that getting arrested and subjected to police brutality ruined his once-idealistic worldview. This is just a lightning-round recap of the events of the “Chaos Theory” storyline.

Being reminded of how hard he got dunked on makes Rung break out his copy of Megatron’s autobiography, Towards Peace. Of course, Megatron has to be “that guy”, and makes it out to be far more than it actually is. My dude, you used your writing to tell all your proto-Decepticon buddies to go beat up Whirl in prison. Let’s not make things sound more grandiose than they are.

Anyway, it turns out that Rung is actually just as much a nerd as he looks, as he reveals that he’s in possession of one of the only few copies of the original version of Towards Peace. And then he takes off his glasses and the fans go bonkers, even though he’s just got that Milne Same-Face going on, just like everyone else.

There you are, you animals.

Rung discusses Revisionism, I’m reminded that the first publication of Eugenesis had a dedication to Roberts’ son of all people, and we get the question of who Terminus is to Megatron.

But alas! The X-ray vision’s been turned on, and it’s time to see… nude robots? An in-depth anatomy lesson?

Robots are confusing sometimes. Anyways, major props to Milne for drawing all that detail. Dude does the technical stuff with a ferocity that must be awe-inspiring to behold.

Megatron’s decided that it’s time for lunch, and then he’s going to do captain stuff.

Because he’s captain of the Lost Light.

I’m convinced Rodimus is dead. That’s the only way this is happening.

Six months ago, Swerve was being awful Swerve-like, with his new buddy Crosscut- guess he finally learned the guy’s name- and Riptide, who we’ll get to a little later on. These three wonderful lads are holding a sort of “crew try-outs”, and it looks like the requirements needed for entry on Megatron’s Lost Light are stiff.

Still, maybe our new friend Nautica will make the cut.

Oh, you are simply delightful!

Despite Nautica having interest in nearly every topic in the universe, on top of having impeccable taste in booze, she just misses the cut. It’s at this point that Nightbeat bursts into the room to stop this farce from going any further. The fact that nobody mentioned anything prior to this is surprising, given that portmanteaus don’t really seem the type of thing Ultra Magnus would approve of.

Back six months ago, we see what Optimus Prime’s super great idea was to expedite the judicial process- Chromedome. It’s always Chromedome. He’s gonna do that thing he promised his late husband he’d stop doing. I suppose it’s a good thing- for Rewind, anyway- that Megatron is wholly against the idea of having his memories torn out of his head. Guess we’re gonna have to do the trial the normal, non brain-pokey way.

Optimus leaves the cell, because I suppose he’s remembered that there’s a conflict of interests here, but Rodimus stays behind to let Megatron know he deserves everything that’s coming his way.

Then Megatron breaks out the puzzle-box from Hellraiser.

In the present, Chromedome isn’t so much spiraling in his depression as he is circling the drain. Nightbeat doesn’t give a shit about that though- he’s more concerned with the fact that one of the numbers on the door to Chromedome’s room is missing. But I’m sure it’s fine.

It’s fiiiiiiiiiiine.

While Nightbeat’s busy being insensitive to his fellow man’s distress, Megatron’s arrived to his room to find his door’s been vandalized by a bunch of idiots who must have just discovered what a thesaurus is. Then he gets shot in the fucking hand with an arrow.

As you do.

Whirl’s gotten ahold of a bow, and he fully intends to use it for Megatron-directed violence. And also his fists. His very pointy fists. He punches Megatron through the fucking floor into the fuel furnace, and they fall what’s probably a good 200 feet to the ground below. Whirl yells about evening the score between the two of them, and then knees Megatron in the dick.

Turns out, Megatron remembers Whirl even better than originally thought, having gone so far as to order his forces to not kill Whirl, because, in a way, he was grateful for the lesson he learned back before the war in Rodion.

Oh man, I hope Rung’s somehow listening in on this. Like, eavesdropping is obviously bad medicine, but we’ve already established that he sucks as a professional, and he needs what few advantages he can get.

Whirl, enraged by the implication that he’s been fighting fixed battles for the last four million years, punches Megatron in the gut… and his arm gets swallowed up by an errant portal leftover from all of Shockwave’s tampering. Since you can’t really fight with only one arm, Megatron wanders off to do captainy things.

Walking back the timeline slightly, we revisit Megatron leaving Rung’s office, and the idea of personal revisionism, the conversation becoming parallel with the strange happenings going on within the ship, as Rewind’s final message is altered so as not to end with “I love you” but instead a blood-curdling scream. Chromedome is, understandably, upset by this turn of events.

Over with Whirl, it’s revealed that the little fight we saw was intentionally set up. For what purpose, or by whom, is left a mystery.

One last flashback to the trial, as Prowl lists off everything that’s standing in the way of our Sympathetic Megatron Redemption Arc.

Good fuckin’ luck, James.

Back in the present, Megatron’s slapped a bandaid on the hole in his torso, as he checks to see what’s happening on the bridge. It would appear there’s a coffin floating around in space.

Pretty fucked up.

also I feel like it’s noticeable even here that nautica doesn't distrust/hate megatron as much as a lot of the others - which makes sense bc she wasn't ever involved in the war, and never had to deal w/any of the decepticons or megatron in any context except post-war

and for tailgate, who also missed the war, it makes sense that he’d distrust megatron, because all the people tg is closest to hate megatron, and tailgate is trying his best to be an Autobot™

I started writing up my reproductive themes spiel but it got so long so I think I’ll make a post just for that lmao. channeling jro w/that one

poor riptide...it’s tough when you’re not made for academics

fascinating how at first the MTOs/CC bots did get at least a basic education which involved cultural information, but as the war went on the education dwindled until it was just the basic stuff needed to fight in a war

ratchet has an interesting point, with MTOs being more likely to have ‘mystical experiences’ bc they're essentially newborns thrown onto a battlefield trying to make sense of things

and we also get to hear about information creep, another important concept! lots of relevant exposition this issue

I love information creep as a concept so much, bc it makes sense that even mechanical beings with like, computers in their brains wouldn't be totally infallible - bc if they’re really alive, and have souls, then that means there HAS to be fallibility, bc otherwise they would just be completely fact-based and logical, and that would make them less ‘alive’

also, the fact that they live so long would definitely contribute, and it’s cool that there ARE some sort of consequences to living for literal millions of years

Brainstorm and - I can't believe no one's asked - Soundwave?

HECK YEAH! I’m splitting this in two, because I know I’m going to be wordy, so first, Brainstorm!

First impression: I won’t lie, I’m a sucker for an eccentric scientist type. His early mtmte lines made him stand out in the flood of characters I was processing, and by the time he was saying ‘I’m too smart to die!’, I was in love

Impression now: OH MAN. I love him. I love him so much. I love the eccentric, brilliant scientist thing, and Iove how that’s just... who he is naturally. But then I adore how the story put so much focus on his internal world and emotions, which was the case, just done through less direct ways than him plainly communicating it. He broke! The rules of time!! Because he was in love!!!! And then the reason it all went to hell was that he felt so bad for his best friend and everyone else who was lost/lost loved ones in the war and decided to save everyone. And he wanted to save everyone as an MTO, where by derailing the war, he’d probably... not exist. And he’s such a natural goof, but in his trial, when he gets all serious and explains himself, when he’s processing how hurt Nautica is, everything that goes on in that issue, it breaks my goddamn heart. He’s got such fascinating depths, and the only reason I’ve written so little for him is because I get disproportionately nervous about doing justice to all the layers that go into who he is.

Favorite moment: Oh, this is hard. This is really hard. He’s a star in virtually every scene he’s in. A shout-out goes to the moment he’s staring down a gun barrel at baby megatron trying to psych himself up to personally killing someone. But I think... it does have to be the trial scene. He’s just made his big play that he’s worked towards for so long, it all fell apart, the trial may be about to yank his home out from under him. He jokes around, constantly, it’s what he does, but he’s so subdued here even when he does try to crack a joke. He’s serious without tempering it with silliness, he’s... low-energy isn’t exactly right. But he feels so tired. And he’s dealing with having failed to change the past, and having potentially poisoned his future. Chromedome is speaking on his behalf, but he’s seeing Nautica, one of his other best friends, deeply hurt and angry because of how he lied and what he did. The time travel stakes are nominally done, but the emotional stakes are so intense, and it’s maybe the most open look we get at his vulnerabilities. Issue 40 is amazing on all counts, but god. That trial.

Idea for a story: I’d really, really like to write a 10k-ish shippy thing starring Brainstorm and Nautica. It’s another situation where I know exactly what the dynamic would feel like, but I don’t know what the story is about. I really loved the dynamic Nautica had with him in canon, and I adore that she had her five-way marriage ceremony. I do wish each of those relationships had gotten more focus, and Brainstorm is one of my favorite faves, so I really wish I could have seen more of that. And post-canon, three of nautica’s five partners are... dead. I mean, nightbeat lives on in my heart and in any fic I write, because NO, but he does kind of poof. She lost her emotions about Skids, and forgot Rung, but not Nightbeat. And things are a bit strained with Velocity for a while, despite the emotion-selling, where I can see it feeling fragile for a bit. It would be interesting seeing someone as flippant as Brainstorm being there for her while she’s dealing with some serious, heavy emotions. I love that Nautica married all those people, but I’d kill for more fic exploring exactly the flavor of love between her and each of those partners.

Unpopular opinion: I’m... not very invested in simpatico :X And mainly, that’s a function of me being very invested in Brainstorm and not very invested in Perceptor, but I’ve gotten some nice recent insights into how his backstory informs his presence and inner world, so I’m beginning to catch that emotional hook. But the situation has been that when I look at perceptor in canon, he’s... fine? But Brainstorm deserves the world, and I’ve had a hard time seeing about how Perceptor will fill all of Brainstorm’s emotional needs in the way he needs.

Favorite relationship: Well, given what I said above, the easy answer is Nautica, but it’s a REAL tight race between her and Chromedome. I don’t know if I can choose XD I’ve talked before about how Brainstorm is hungry for approval and attention, and Nautica just... really sincerely enjoys being around him. And he’s smart enough to keep up with her and works on exciting advanced sciencey things that interest her. They click so well for being a pair where each just makes the other so happy. And I’m predisposed to think that two engineers together is the perfect ideal :P But Brainstorm and Chromedome, oh man. They’re pretty different personalities, but they’re so close and supportive even at each other’s lowest points, and the way they don’t ditch each other is really heartwarming, I think. Chromedome speaks on Brainstorm’s behalf at his trial, after he poisoned everyone, tried to kill the co-captain, and rewrite the whole past, and could have easily had a drift-type situation happen to him. And Brainstorm comes to Chromedome when Rewind is dead, trying to persuade him not to forget Rewind, which is something he’s done for multiple other husbands already, and he hasn’t ditched Chromedome or stopped trying even though he didn’t succeed those other times. It’s like... Nautica and Brainstorm is a high-energy foreground ‘I just like you so much’ situation, and Chromedome and Brainstorm is a low-energy, super-stable background ‘of course I’m sticking with you’, and I couldn’t choose one over the other

Favorite headcanon: Is ADHD Brainstorm a headcanon? I feel like that’s practically text and shouldn’t really count :P This is a tough one! He feels so complete to me on the page that I’ve never really felt the need to fill in details in my head. How about... in an intimate situation, he’s generally not going to be volunteering information about any serious, not-happy feelings. He’s going to be hella avoidant about that. But he does really want someone to realize that these feelings exist, corner him, and make him talk about it.

Rodimus makes some questionable life choices after getting dangerously sentimental/lonely at Ratchet and Drift's conjunx reception then wakes up several weeks later to the consequences.

Lucky for him his choice of partner wasn't one of those questionable choices, and as it turns out neither was getting sparked up.

Plot: After millions of years of war, Optimus Prime decides to finally settle down and accepts an invitation to join the Lost Light. Believing he can rekindle the spark that once existed between himself and Megatron, he accepts. Sadly, the former gladiator has moved on and now the prime is stuck on a ship in the middle of space with his former love and their current lover. It's ok though....Pharma can help.

Well, I now have four cross-stitch projects in progress, on frames, which is the opposite of what I meant to do with my last vacation day. Oops.

But I’m hoping that when I go back to work, time will be real again, and I’ll have something to give my life shape. Fingers crossed, because the writing ideas just don’t stop from happening. And the need to write only gets more and more urgent as I... continue to get nowhere with it.

But anyways, I haven’t locked down silly little things like “““characters”““ or “””ideas””” yet, but I was reading about d/s dynamics and there are a few things I for sure need to poke at (d/s with a dancing type of leading/following partners framing, and d/s where you let your sense of self be subsumed and become an extension of your partner). ANYWAYS, let’s noodle on about possible ficlet ideas so I can remember these things when I stop putting off sleep and wake up in the morning

Whirl in a subby situation, where nobody is hurting him, nobody is withholding anything, nobody is rising to his bait when he tries to be an asshole, it’s just nice things all around, and that is so uncomfortable, but he doesn’t have much choice but to sit there and enjoy it.

Brainstorm/Nautica/Perceptor where she facilitates the hookup that he’s been fluttering over for-fucking-ever, and she and Perceptor team up and dom the everloving hell out of him and everything is sweet and cute forever.

Megatron and Rodimus with a toy, and... hmmm. I write them both switchy but with Rodimus sliding really easily into subbing and Megatron sliding really easily into domming. I want that the other way around, but in a way that feels natural and sweet, with lots of admiration and praise, and things still feeling new and a little fragile.

Cywhirlgate where Tailgate is the cutest little accidental dom and has two giant, dangerous mechs sitting there all pretty for him, where it’s very much an active act of submission rather than him domming them into doing it.

Apart from the Marissa/Thundercracker story I’m going to write, I want something more established, where she has her footing and some idea of what to expect, and is telling him what to do. I want Thundercracker just melting under that affirmation that she cares and how good it feels to follow her orders and make her happy and be praised. I want some of that emotional need coming to the surface and her meeting it without dodging.

And also apart from the trinefic, I want to do something else that focuses on Skywarp, but where he isn’t a broken-up, falling-apart mess. I want Starscream in the middle, being as needy and demanding as ever, and Skywarp sliding right into that subbing from the top role, with emotional emphasis on how comfortable and reassuring that feels, and with lots of flavor of him as dumb muscle (compared to the other two), but very much a protector.

This wouldn’t be the kink bingo fic, but Wheeljack and Starscream where everything is slow and lazy and barely-sexual, except for the way Wheeljack works him from zero to overload just using his wings :3c

And also not the kink bingo fic, but Windblade and Starscream that explcitly works through the kind of bdsm stuff you can get up to without having to touch painplay. Probably there needs to be some good stuff on the visual/symbolic side of things, and that absolutely has to cover some good old-fashioned femdom heels and her stepping on him

Nightbeat and Nautica, where she has to slow him down from the way his mind is always racing and going off in ten million directions at once, and force him to really pay attention in the moment. This will need prrrrrobably constraints of some kind, maybe a full bondage whatsit, maybe a blindfold too. Taking away his voice would take away all the fun, but it really needs to be a power struggle where she’s working to keep him centered.

Grimlock/Misfire, where... hmmMMM, this one will be tricky, because Grimlock sure aten’t recovered yet, and it’s hard to see exactly how he’ll come out of this situation. But I just really want to see Misfire all subby and thrilled by how intimidating and imposing his partner is, and getting adored and wrecked.

Rung/Fort Max, where Fort Max is still definitely a mess, but. HM, another tricky one. I don’t want him being all passive and just receiving until he has to tap out. I want something closer to the Prowl/Fort Max, where he’s provoked into losing himself, but in a healthy way. I want him using Rung, and Rung totally loving it, and being proud of Fort Max for being able to get into it and enjoy himself.

Soundwave and cassettes. What about cassettes? EVERYTHING ABOUT THEM, tbh. But I’d love to play up that whole telepathy angle and voyeurism, and ooooh imagine him watching and listening and feeling while Rumble and Frenzy went at each other, or something like that.

Alternately, Soundwave and Prowl (and telepathy). He can hear all the ugly things Prowl has done and is thinking and sees what an absolute wreck he is, and it would be so hard to have his brutal honesty balanced with the dry wit we’ve seen from him, all without letting it slip into cruelty. But oh my goodness, would that be incredible to see.

......Rewind/Dominus Ambus/Minimus Ambus >_> He’s just so lonely and so hopeless at people, I want a cute married couple taking him in and taking charge and rocking his world and being effortlessly in tune with each other while they do it. So much love that it spills over from just them and wraps him up in a cozy, affectionate blanket too.

And in a similar sense, Rewind/Chromedome/Brainstorm :P But the emotions are all sorts of different, because Brainstorm is such a high-energy, sociable guy.

TOTAL CRACKSHIP TIME, but okay, hear me out. Tailgate/Prowl. Tailgate doesn’t have any of the baggage with Prowl that all of Prowl’s actual friends do. Tailgate has proven that he’s totally able to field all sorts of assholeish behavior and still be just as friendly and happy as before. Prowl doesn’t have any dirt on Tailgate to be nasty with. And Tailgate doesn’t really seem to be insta-judging Prowl the way he’s come to expect. It would be so hard wrangling this, but oh my god, it would yank the rug from under Prowl’s feet so hard, and it would be so cute.

Megatron/Rodimus sparkplay. I mean, anyone and sparkplay, I haven’t touched it at all yet (because aaa new thing, how do), but imagine Megatron letting someone at his spark! Solid gold, and what a lovely, grand gesture of trust :3c

Ratchet and First Aid, and not-exactly-healthy grief sex. Ratchet has his bearings way more than First Aid does, so it’s not going to get bad-bad. But I really do need to poke at what an absolute mess First Aid was in the aftermath of Tyrest.

Crankcase and his bf. I don’t know how or what or anything, but seeing his world get rocked would be the cutest thing ever :3c

Sunstreaker and Sideswipe still trying to realign with each other post-reunion. Just the difficulty with old intimacy where the slow poison crept in, and trying to reset from that, all sorts of emotions and fresh wounds and old scars.

Prowl and... Prowl and someone. God does he make it hard to find healthy interpersonal relationships to use for him :P Jazz is easy mode if I don’t think of something better. But something where surrendering his own control and agency is such an overwhelming, disorienting relief that he’s barely even capable of processing all the sex stuff

NO WAIT I HAVE IT, Prowl+cdrw, where they can tell what a fucking mess he is, and Rewind reluctantly agrees to let this be a thing if and only if he stays and it isn’t just Chromedome and Prowl alone. Rewind is such a bossy guy, though, and Chromedome doesn’t have a dommy bone in his body, how long is it really going to take before Rewind steps in and takes the wheel? :3c
