So because real opossums like to carry sticks and leaves with their tails, to build a nest with. I keep imagining anthro-opossums holding their sleeping bags and pillows with their tail on the way to a sleepover.

Animals are kinda awesome, right?
Tumblr media
Completely random, but could we please just appreciate how awesome animals are?
I am not even talking about a specific animal but just animals in general. They are so good at surviving and all have kinda their specific niché. There are so many kinda cool adaptions they have. Even those, we do not thing about.
Like, deer. We do not think of deer as especially good survivors, but they are actually pretty darn good at eating a lot of different shrub and bark in order to survive, even when the summer is dry or the winter is long and cold.
Sure, they often harm the environment (and many deer species are invasive, because white folks have brought them everywhere to hunt them) through this behavior. But the fact that they can survive like this is kinda awesome.
Or like, all those super weird deep see species, that manage to survive so many kilometers deep in the water, while basically everything else gets just crushed to pieces. (Even those millionairs in a fucking submesible.)
Or look at voltures. The most underrated species of birds, if you ask me. Sure, some of them kinda look ugly, but not only have they immunity to all sorts of sicknesses and toxins. They can eat whatever they find left over in the wild.
Or, heck, look at fucking worms! They can regenerate from so much fucking damage. Just cut one in half and you just got two worms. That is kinda awesome, isn't it?
I know, this one is kinda random. But... It was just something I was thinking about.
Animals are cool. We should talk more about that.
Also, like, please leave cool animal facts in the comments/reblogs.

This blue fungus is commonly known as the cobalt crust fungus or velvet blue spread. This species can be used to produce an antibiotic named cortalcerone that prevents an abundance of infections.

At the beginning of May, my 7 year old son brought me this "thing" that he found in the garden.
Tumblr media
Now we are not bug people, so we had to look up what it was. We gathered it was some sort of moth pupa. As were in the middle of doing some landscaping work on our yard, there wasn't really anywhere to put it back outside that would be safe, so we followed some advice from the internet and put it in a box with a moist paper towel.
It sat in this box on my partner's desk for over a month. Several times I wondered if we might have killed it. But today we got to see our guest's face when it emerged.
Just from looking at pictures of moths, I think it may be a sphinx moth? They seem to be common in Utah.
We took it back outside and found a sheltered place to let it crawl out onto some plants. I hope we didn't disturb its lifecycle too much. But it was neat to get to watch it.

Good luck out there little friend.

Leaf Miner Maze - in progress
This was created in 2022-ish; I had a grand plan to create a solvable maze out of leaf miner paths. I spend a lot of time doing the leaf collection all through the green parts of the year, and when it’s frozen outside I have subjects to work with.
I completed this piece and STUPIDLY FRAMED IT AND SET IT UP AT A STATE FAIR DISPLAY AND FUCK ME SOMEKNE BOUGHT IT AND I NEVER GOT A SOLID PHOTO OR PRINT
RIP 300+ hours on that piece. Guess I just gotta do it again.

I really, really think slime molds are cool. I've only found a few species in person, but they never fail to delight me. Why? Because they're so WEIRD! It's like The Blob, but pocket-sized. The link above is an article I wrote about them for the Coast Weekend paper, and there's an audio recording of the article there, too. If you enjoyed it, feel free to drop the editor a line at editor(at)discoverourcoast(dot)com - thanks :)
