"The god of dirt came up to me many times and said so many wise and delectable things, I lay on the grass listening to his dog voice, crow voice, frog voice; now, he said, and now, and never once mentioned forever..."

"I suppose I should probably visit more." It was a dreary observation, a weak hearted deflection of the embarrassment she felt for having found herself so lost on her sons campus. You could only imagine her elation when she managed to bump into someone who knew Harrison, sheer relief slumped her shoulders and left her rouged lips in a grateful exhale. She felt luckier still, when the pretty blonde had offered up her own room for some refuge after discovering Harrison wasn't even on the property. "You're such a lovely girl, I can't believe you're friends with him. I know, he's my son, but he can be...Unsavory, at the best of times." Amused smile flit across her features, "He's not giving you any trouble, is he?" She knew all about his reputation amongst women, just like his father in that respect. Unfortunately, she had discovered this far too late in life. Saddled with children, whom she loved, and a husband, whom she resented, and very little to keep herself company other than boxed wine, her vibrator, and whatever soap opera she had found herself engrossed in as of late. She supposed it was why she was so eager to accept the company of Sylvia, an excuse not to go home, just yet anyway.

Werewolves, Monsters, and Micracles: Representing Colonial Fantasies in Gerald of Wales's Topographia Hibernica by Rhonda Knight
Gerald's chapter concerning the werewolves, one of the longest in the Topographia, exhibits his tendency to weave a complicated argument from many disparate sources. Gerald tells of a chance meeting in the woods around Meath of an Irish priest, his young male companion, and a male werewolf. The werewolf tells the priest that he and his female companion are humans in wolf form:
De quodam hominum genere sumus Ossiriensium. Unde, quolibet septennio, per imprecationem sancti cujusdam, Natalis scilicet abbatis, duo, videlicet mas et femina, tarn a formis quam finibus exulare coguntur. Formam enim humanam prorsus exuentes, induunt lupinam. Completo vero septennii spatio, si forte superstites fuerint, aliis duobus ipsorum loco simili conditione subrogatis, ad pristinam redeunt tarn patriam quam naturam.
[We are of human lineage and are from Ossory. From there every seven years, through the curse of a certain saint, namely the Abbot Natalis, two persons, a man and a woman, are compelled to live in exile, from their human form as well as from their region. Banishing human form completely, they put on wolf form. When they have completed the seven years, if they, by chance, survive, they return to their previous land and nature and two others become substitutes, placed in the same condition.]
Gerald does not further elaborate on Natalis's curse, so readers are left to wonder why the curse was placed on these people and how the exiles were chosen. How ever, it seems clear that the people become wolves and exiles through no fault of their own.
...
Gerald concludes the narrative of the werewolves by discussing their natures, repeating almost verbatim the questions he poses about the semivir bos: "Sed animal hujusmodi brutum an homo dicetur? . . . Przeterea animal quadrupes, pronum in terram, nec risibile, humans: naturae quis adjunget? Item, qui hoc animal occiderit, nunquid homicida dicetur?" [But is such a creature to be called a brute or a human? ... Yet, who will associate with human nature a creature that walks on four legs near to the ground and does not laugh? Again, would he who killed this creature be called a murderer?].
To answer these questions, Gerald turns to Augustine's De civitate Dei. He cites Augustine's determination that both members of the monstrous races and those who are born monstrous are indeed human. He continues with Augustine's story of the Arcadians who change into wolves for nine years and then return to human form.
After a few sentences devoted to voluntary shape-shifting, Gerald carefully rehearses Augustine's conclusions about shape-shifting: "Daemones igitur seu malos homines sicut nec creare, ita nec naturas veraciter mutare posse, simul cum Augustino sentimus. Sed specietenus, quae a vero Deo creata sunt, ipso permittente, commutant; ut scilicet videantur esse quod non sunt" [We agree, therefore, with Augustine, that neither demons nor wicked men are able either to create or truly change their natures; but the outward appearances of those whom God has created, change, by his permission, so that they appear to be what they are not].
Through his rehearsal of Augustine, Gerald explores the meaning of humanity and comes to the conclusion that the werewolves possess a basic form of humanity.

it really was! glad the thumbnail on viki got me curious to check it out 🤣
& yessss i do love me some men in glasses i will not lie 😂 i don't mind sad dramas i quite enjoy a tragedy/sad ending when it's written right 😅
that's totally valid!! i definitely have done that too i won't lie 💀
yeah you're not wrong there 😂 i just wish we got something more, i do wonder what the drama would've looked like if they didn't have to pass review/censorship & cut things out/change things 🥹 & i'm very easy to please when it comes to my drama watching so i really don't mind what the drama is i just need them to reunite 😂
since the year is slowly coming to an end what was your favourites from this year? (doesn't have to be just dramas can be characters or ships) — userdramas secret santa 🎄
I saw him and the fact that we had to do some figuring out in the drama and have romance. And that got me locked in!
LOL I don't think I hear/see that often people like men in glasses. I like! I cannot take tragedy. Unless its like horror genre.
I think I'm less critical on cdramas and harder on kdramas. Which is why I watch more cdramas in a year because I don't expect wowing as much.
HMMM
Favs have been: Lu Zheng An the ML of My Fated Boy. I actually gave this drama another shot this year and HE (and him alone) was THE PERFECT man. Call it obsessed IDC lol
Joseph Zeng. I watched Hi Venus and Romance on the Farm and I am lowkey in love with him.
Gaseum Electronics was such a cute little show! I dont usually watch office ensemble shows but I really liked this. And how they managed to not make the minority inclusion cringey.
Bi Wen Jun has earned my attention and love. I think he's super attractive and Warm on Cold Night leads were super cute but I'd prefer a more ROMANCE heavy drama.
Definitely Not Today. It's such a deep cut low budget but serious toned drama. Its so underrated and I adore it. It would win awards at indie movie ceremonies I think.
Back From the Brink leads deserved more. Chem was so good.
Don't get me started on Destined With You.... I love those babies. They were prob my fav ship of the year
Natalie and August from Unfortunately Yours by Tessa Bailey were SO CUTE.
Janine and Greggory from Abbot Elementary has been shipping so hard in my head lately. I don't want the creators to put them together just yet cuz I think its too early. But I love them.
CARMY AND SYD FROM THE BEAR. I NEED THEM TOGETHER. NEEEED IT NOW. *SLAMS FIST*
Halle and Jonah.... yes the real life two. LOL I'm sorry lol. Their chemistry is undeniable in the little mermaid and in real life. T_T

Influences In Legacy
Sappho influenced literary figures such as Virginia Woolf, Charles Baudelaire, and T.S Elliot.
The name Lavender Menace is a reference to Sappho’s motifs of lavender adorning two young women who love each other. This organisation used the ‘Lavender’ menace as a driving symbol in getting lesbians accepted in feminism.
Sappho for Equality is an organisation based in Kolkata, India, working for the rights of lesbians, bisexual women, and trans men.
In 1894 French writer Pierre Louys published ‘The Songs of Bilitis,’ erotic poetry that he claimed was translated from Ancient Greek found in Cyprus, written on the walls of a tomb. He completely made up Bilitis and he wrote those poems mimicking the style of Sappho. This ‘Bilitis’ and Sappho fanfiction, if you will, became a symbol for a Lesbian rights organisation called ‘The Daughters of Bilitis.’
Natalie Barney was an American writer who presented herself to renowned dancer and courtesan Liane de Pougy as a page of love sent by Sappho and later became the subject of Pougy’s roman-a-clef Sapphic Idyll. Barney herself wrote Five Small Grecian Dialogues under the name Tryphe, which contains long passages about Sappho. Barney also dated a woman; Renee Vivien, a poet who was one of the earliest modern translators of Sappho’s poetry.
In her diary, Virginia Woolf speculated that critics of her book A Room of One’s Own would call her a Sapphist for its descriptions of female friendship. Woolf’s novel Orlando features a gender-fluid character based on her lover Vita Sackville-West.
In the 1970’s, Sidney Abbot and Barbara Love wrote Sappho Was a Right On Woman, in which they highlighted and explored the connection between feminism and lesbianism. This occurred around the same time as the Lavender Menace movement.
In the Summer of 2000, a bunch of British lesbians decided to travel to Lesbos and have a wild package holiday. They came to Lesbos as it was home to Sappho, who is regarded as the first recorded lesbian. The documentary made on this event is compiled of film the lesbians took on their trip, and aptly named ‘Lesbians go Mad on Lesbos.’ The group of partying lesbians faced a lot of prejudice and backlash from locals, particularly the mayor, who tried to ban them from having their holiday on Lesbos. This documentary was largely inaccessible to the public and lost in archives until recently when lesbian YouTuber StrangeAeons, requested for the archives to have this film restored and available for her series exploring sapphic history.
Sappho is largely responsible for the Lesbos tourism industry. Due to this being her home island, lesbians tourists are apparently ‘10 a penny.’ Lesbos villagers are largely accepting of lesbians as they have been visiting the island since the 70s and providing a large income for the island since. Lesbos even has attractions related to Sappho for this demographic, including the popular bar, ‘The Tenth Muse.’ There are two lesbian-run bars on the island, as well as a massive statue of Sappho herself. The local stray cats hang around these lesbian bars to get scraps of food, making them as reliant on the lesbian tourists as the villagers.
The Daughters of Bilitis was one of the first lesbian organisations to be established, as long as we are not counting medieval nunneries. Since it was founded in San Francisco in 1955, lesbian were very much subject to public hostility, so it formed as a sort of secret lesbian society that eventually evolved into a well known lesbian rights group.

A Little Princess(1986) Episode 01
I stuck ‘em up on Youtube. In decent quality. Possibly the best and most faithful adaptation of the book ever made, certainly the best I’ve ever seen. Of interest to a very select few - one of the writers, Jeremy Burnham, went to school with Edward Hardwicke.

"Hmm? Oh, right...No, I guess I do feel a little out of place." She certainly felt the aftereffects of her adrenaline fueled escape plan now, anyway. Riddled with anxiety and wondering if people around here even knew that her Cartier was worth stealing. A complete fish out of water, doing her best to avoid the sticky glaze that permeated the bar she had sat down at. What had she even hoped for? If it was company she sought, she had found it, at least. Whether she could put her reservations to the side and enjoy the interaction was an entirely different question. Though she tried, lips tugging into what appeared to be a sheepish smile.

A curious 12th century account of a werewolf that spoke with a priest
Tumblr media
According to Gerald of Wales' "Topographia Hibernica":
I now proceed to relate some wonderful occurrences which have happened within our times. About three years before the arrival of earl John in Ireland, it chanced that a priest, who was journeying from Ulster towards Meath, was benighted in a certain wood on the borders of Meath.
While, in company with only a young lad, he was watching by a fire which he had kindled under the branches of a spreading tree, lo! a wolf came up to them, and immediately addressed them to this effect:
“Rest secure, and be not afraid, for there is no reason you should fear, where no fear is.”
The travellers being struck with astonishment and alarm, the wolf added some orthodox words referring to God. The priest then implored him, and adjured him by Almighty God and faith in the Trinity, not to hurt them, but to inform them what creature it was that in the shape of a beast uttered human words. The wolf, after giving catholic replies to all questions, added at last:
“There are two of us, a man and a woman, natives of Ossory, who, through the curse of one Natalis, saint and abbot, are compelled every seven years to put off the human form, and depart from the dwellings of men. Quitting entirely the human form, we assume that of wolves. At the end of the seven years, if they chance to survive, two others being substituted in their places, they return to their country and their former shape. And now, she who is my partner in this visitation lies dangerously sick not far from hence, and, as she is at the point of death, I beseech you, inspired by divine charity, to give her the consolations of your priestly office.”
At this word the priest followed the wolf trembling, as he led the way to a tree at no great distance, in the hollow of which he beheld a she-wolf, who under that shape was pouring forth human sighs and groans. On seeing the priest, having saluted him with human courtesy, she gave thanks to God, who in this extremity had vouchsafed to visit her with such consolation. She then received from the priest all the rites of the church duly performed, as far as the last communion. This also she importunately demanded, earnestly supplicating him to complete his good offices by giving her the viaticum. The priest stoutly asserting that he was not provided with it, the he-wolf, who had withdrawn to a short distance, came back and pointed out a small missal-book, containing some consecrated wafers, which the priest carried on his journey, suspended from his neck, under his garment, after the fashion of the country. He then intreated him not to deny them the gift of God, and the aid destined for them by Divine Providence; and, to remove all doubt, using his claw for a hand, he tore off the skin of the she-wolf, from the head down to the navel, folding it back. Thus she immediately presented the form of an old woman. The priest, seeing this, and compelled by his fear more than his reason, gave the communion; the recipient having earnestly implored it, and devoutly partaking of it. Immediately afterwards, the he-wolf rolled back the skin, and fitted it to its original form.
Tumblr media
These rites having been duly, rather than rightly, performed, the he-wolf gave them his company during the whole night at their little fire, behaving more like a man than a beast. When morning came, he led them out of the wood, and, leaving the priest to pursue his journey, pointed out to him the direct road for a long distance. At his departure, he also gave him many thanks for the benefit he had conferred, promising him still greater returns of gratitude, if the Lord should call him back from his present exile, two parts of which he had already completed.

Mercury and Saturn (Aspects and Transits): Writing Practice as a Spiritual Discipline
As I have been recommitting myself to my writing practice, I have been returning to a collection of books on the writing life that I have gathered over the years. It is strange, in a way, for writers to write about writing. Writing is simple. You sit down with a notebook or a computer, and you just start recording your thoughts.
Committing to doing it every day, the way you do when you have a writing practice, seems as trivial as committing to brush your teeth. When you have something really pressing on your heart that needs to be said, it can be that easy. When you dedicate your life to developing writing as a craft, it is not so easy. Without care, the well of inspiration goes dry after a day or two.
Finding myself out of words, I start to doubt the idea of a writing practice. "The world is full of chatter and noise," I think. "Am I helping anyone by opening my mouth when I don't have anything to say?" There have been times in my life when the answer to that question has been, "No." When I find myself without urgency or inspiration in those times, I close my notebooks and take up other work. There have been times, however, when I need to treat writing as my craft, as something I practice the way a potter practices making cups and bowls. A potter doesn't wait until they are inspired to create. They sit at the wheel and do the work.
Why bother with a writing practice?
Dedication and consistency builds skill, but it isn't the only reason to practice. Returning to the page every day, regardless of how you feel about it can be sacred work. When you run through all of the easy material, you get bored. If you continue to sit through the boredom, you start to explore the corners of your soul that you hide under a flurry of activity.
In short, a writing practice can be like a meditation practice. The writer Natalie Goldberg has built a career exploring the similarities between her Zen practice and her writing practice.
The abbot at Thomas Merton's monastery understood this when he ordered Merton to make writing his daily labor. Though Merton, who had been a scholar before he became a monk, would have preferred to engage in the order's usual labors such as growing vegetables and brewing beer, the abbot knew that a writing practice could have the same soul-making properties as physical labor.
Who benefits from a writing practice?
If you have an aspect between Mercury and Saturn in your natal chart or you are going through a transit, progression, or profection year involving those planets, you might benefit from a writing practice.
Mercury rules writing (communication of all kinds), and Saturn is the planet of discipline. A writing practice is all about applying the virtues of Saturn to your communication. In time, the practice of bringing discipline to your words brings order to your thoughts and clarifies your perceptions.
Even if you don't have any aspects between Mercury and Saturn in your chart or by transit or progression, a writing practice can be a valuable remediation tool for a Mercury you're struggling with.
What does a difficult aspect involving Saturn and Mercury look like in a writing practice?
I have a close quincunx between my natal Mercury in Aries in the 9th whole sign house and my Saturn in Scorpio in the 4th house. The God of Order and the God of Communication do not work together easily in my mind. They struggle with each other. Mercury chafes under a diet of sameness. When I go too long without breaking up my routine, my mind works behind my back to create chaos and force change. Saturn in Scorpio, however, wants to go deep. It hungers for the revelations that come when I've pushed through boredom and am forced to confront the hard psychological truths behind it.
For me, one of the hard truths beyond boredom is that the value I hold for silence isn't entirely my own. I was raised in a small Christian denomination that teaches women should be silent in church. There are many churches where women are (almost) inadvertently silent, where only the clergy speak during services and only men are ordained as ministers. In my childhood churches, though, the main service was a Quaker-style meeting where people would speak as the spirit lead them, telling stories, reading bits of scripture, asking that the congregation join them in singing a hymn. For two hours a week, it was the order of the assembly that women should sit in silence.
Even as a child, I was never content with the reason "because God says so," and so I was left to muse on the other, frankly, pathetic reasons I was given for why women couldn't speak in church, such as: Women bring disorder to the service. Women aren't as educated as men. Women have inherited Eve's sin, and, my personal favorite, it confuses the angels.
My parents had the grace to send me to another church that had a woman youth pastor when I was a teenager, but the foolish lessons I learned when I was young haunt me whenever I sit down to write. They say that silence is a virtue. They say that anything that might cause disorder is best unsaid. They say that only a highly educated, refined, rational voice is worth listening to. They say that writing "like a woman" is unseemly. They say that those who are incapable of discipline should submit to those who are.
These voices are the demons I meet on the other side of boredom. They take small truths--such as my Mercury in Aries' love of pot-stirring--and they make a literally compelling argument that silence is the path of spiritual growth for me.
The insidious thing about it is that there is some truth to it. I have the sun and north node in Taurus. I am a person for whom the path of peace and serenity represents growth. Taurus is ruled by Venus, the Goddess of Beauty, and Taurus rules the throat. When the things I say stray too far from the path of beauty, I stray from my path. This is difficult to reconcile with Mercury in the sign of the Warrior.
What are the benefits of a writing practice?
This morning, I was reading about the path of the warrior as a sacred path for writers in Writing as a Sacred Path by Jill Jepson. She says that the virtues of a warrior's life--"discipline, courage, and the willingness to fight for truth are among the most admirable of virtues." They are virtues, she says, in the writing life also.
As someone with Mercury in Aries, fighting injustice and lies is especially important in my writing life, but everyone who engages in a writing practice benefits from the warrior's virtues. "Excellence in writing," Jepson says, "isn't only about voice and style. It is about finding the truest parts of ourselves and having the moral strength to never waver from what we hold sacred."
For me, the simple act of picking up a pen is an act of resistance. I am fighting the lies--still living zombie-like in my society--that women are not as worthy to be heard as men, that women aren't as capable of achieving the discipline of craft as our brothers, that fighting the lies that would silence us only creates trouble.
To me, it is a sacred truth that an individual should be judged on their own virtues, not on the gender they were assigned at birth or the gender they do or do not choose. The things that determine the quality of a person's character are things like honesty, courage, and, yes, discipline. Resisting the lies that would say otherwise is a truth I fight for by engaging in a writing practice.
It might be an easy thing to sit down with a pen and generate words, but having the courage to tell the truth every day, and to present in it in a way that is beautiful, that is a real craft worthy of refining.
