Nakai, eldest son of the late San Diego killer whale matriarch Kasatka, passed away last night. He was the first killer whale ever born from artificial insemination. I fondly remember Nakai as the “Baby Shamu” of my childhood. He spent his entire 21 years at SeaWorld San Diego, cared for by trainers who were with him from birth. My heart is shattered for his veterinary team and his human and orca family, including his maternal siblings Kalia and Makani and paternal half-brother Ikaika.
Anyone with cruel or judgmental comments directed toward Nakai’s caregivers will be blocked. Infections in cetaceans are notoriously difficult to treat, and absolutely everything in their power was done to save his life. Swim free, handsome Nakai, you’re with your mother again!

SeaWorld’s 20-year-old killer whale Nakai has died following an infection
"Nakai, who was born in September 2001 at SeaWorld, is the park’s second orca to die in the past year. Amaya, a 6-year-old female, died Aug. 20, 2021. Before that, the most recent death was that of Kasatka, a 42-year-old female who died from a lung disease in August 2017.
SeaWorld San Diego said zoological team worked aggressively, but unsuccessfully, to treat the infection. Nakai’s death leaves eight other orcas at the park."
