“Sonic!” The mentioned hedgehog’s ear twitched at the call of his name, a single eye opening so he could look for who was calling for him.
It was Tails. The small fox was running towards him, a smile on his muzzle that Sonic could see clearly from his spot in the tree.
With a smile of his own forming, the teen hopped down from his perch. He stretched his arms up above his head as he watched the kit run up to him.
“Ms. Amy helped me make you something!” Tails’ smile was just about as wide as it could be as he came to a stop before the hedgehog, cupping his paws behind his back. The older couldn't help but chuckle at him, raising a brow once he noticed the batter-like substance that clung to the fur on his cheek.
He had a pretty good idea what that something is.
“Yeah?” Sonic asked softly, taking the kit’s chin in his paw to look at the batter. He licked his thumb before running it over the younger’s cheek, wiping away the batter. It smelled like chocolate.
Tails’ face scrunched up at the action, grimacing at the wet feeling running over his cheek. When the hedgehog was finished he wiggled out of his hold, using the back of his paw to wipe his cheek.
Sonic snorted as he wiped his paw on his leg, “Would that something happen to be a cake of some sort, buddy?”
“It's a surprise, Sonic!” Tails reminded, crossing his arms with a pout. The teen shook his head before raising his paws defensively–he's learned it's best to play along when his little brother adopts an attitude.
“Right, my bad.” Sonic closed his eyes and covered them with his right paw, extending the left one out to the younger. “Go on, take me to my top secret surprise, buddy.”
“You can't close your eyes now, Sonic.” The fox groaned, raising to his tiptoes to tug on the paw covering the older’s eyes. “We've gotta get to Ms. Amy's house first!” Sonic isn't sure why the kid kept calling her ‘Ms. Amy,’ she was only four years older than him. But he refused to drop the title, so they just kinda went with it. He'd grow out of it. Probably.
“Ohh, right. Obviously.” Deciding he wanted to mess with the kid a little bit more, he glanced down at the fancy little watch the fox made him. Taking note of the direction they needed to head to reach Amy's house, he turned and started walking in the opposite direction. “Let's go, then! Can't wait to–”
“Sonic!” Tails tightened his hold on the other's arm, pointing in the correct direction. “Her house is that way!”
“What? No way! it's definitely this way, li’l bro.” Sonic tugged his arm back just hard enough to pull the fox towards him a little.
Tails huffed at the action and spun his tails, taking to the air and quickly pulling the hedgehog up with him.
“Woah, woah, okay!” Sonic laughed, reaching up to pat the kid's paws. “I'll go the right way, promise.”
The kit’s eyes narrowed at his brother, but he ended up choosing to believe his word. He lowered the teen back to the ground, glancing at his own communicator to double check that he was right about the direction.
Sonic laughed and reached up to the flying fox, gently ruffling his bangs. The kit swatted his hand away, dropping to land beside him. His paws wrapped around his brother’s wrist once again so he could drag him down the path and back to the pink hedgehog’s house.
“Ease up on me, will ya, bud?” Sonic asked, though he didn't really care. He just wanted to be annoying. The fox rolled his eyes as he continued to pull his brother along. “It was an honest mistake!”
“Be happy you're still getting your gift.” Sonic wasn't really sure if it was normal for six year olds to grumble, but he figured it was best if he stopped pushing his luck. The kid had a pretty mean bite if provoked. Literally.
It was a short trip back to Amy's house. Sonic hadn't gone far on purpose, knowing the fox was still a little on edge being near others without him. It'd been a good few hours though, so he thinks it's safe to say the kiddo likes Amy.
“Found him!” Tails called out once they entered the house, letting go of the hedgehog’s wrist. He hurried to the kitchen to find the girl.
“Good!” Amy smiled sweetly at the fox as she carefully picked up a stand that held a small cake. “We worked really hard on this!”
Sonic couldn't help but snicker as he leaned against the doorway, “Figured it was a cake or something. Little guy carried some evidence in his fluff.” The kid shot him a glare, rolling his eyes when the teen winked at him.
“Well, when you have fun while baking it tends to get a bit messy.” The girl defended, walking over to present the treat to the older. “Now here!”
The cake was simple. It was small and circular, covered in a royal blue frosting with a line of bright red framing the bottom of the cake. The words ‘We Love You, Sonic!” were drawn out in, mostly, white frosting, with the ‘W’ being pink and the first ‘E’ being yellow.
Sonic could feel his heart swell up at the sight of it. It was typical of Amy to give him pastries with messages similar to this, but it was a new thing for Tails.
They didn't really vocalize their ‘I love you’s, it was just something between that went without saying. And while this wasn't technically saying it, he knew that the kid had to muster up a lot of courage for it.
With that knowledge, he carefully sped behind Amy to where the little fox was standing and trapped him in a hug. Tails squeaked at sudden contact, but started laughing when the hedgehog nuzzled his head.
“You did the decorating, didn't ya?” He asked, resting his chin atop the younger’s head. “It's just screaming you.”
“It's meant to represent you, Sonic,” Tails informed, trying his best to look up at the teen from their position.
“And it was a team effort, mister!” Amy scolded, huffing as she sat the stand on the counter. “We both baked and decorated it for you.”
“You know I'm just teasing, Ames.” Sonic sent the girl a grin, finally letting go of his little brother with a quick head ruffle, “It looks great though, really. Thanks.”
“Of course!” The pink hedgehog clapped her hands together excitedly and turned to the fox, “It was a pleasure to bake with Tails! He's really good.”
The youngest shrunk into himself at the compliment, muttering a quiet ‘thank you’ as his cheeks flushed red.
Amy smiled at him but decided to pivot away from his embarrassment, “Go ahead and sit down, I'll cut the cake!”
Sonic didn't argue with her and sat down at the table. Tails pushed a chair over so he could sit closer to his hero before climbing onto it.
“So, what flavoring did you two use, big guy?” The teen asked, emphasizing the 'two' so Amy knew he was crediting the both of them.
Tails giggled at his brother and looked over to the counter, “It's mint chocolate chip.”
“Mint, huh?” Sonic raised a brow, just barely managing to repress his snicker at the choice. “You sure this is for me?”
“No, the mint's for me. You won't eat the whole cake anyways.” The kit admitted looking down to his paws as he toyed with his gloves, his legs gently kicking as he waited for the treat.
“That is what's mainly for you.” Amy said as she sat the cake stand onto the table, nodding over to a small box on the counter next to the sink. “It's stuff for chili dogs for you two to cook later.”
“Oh, Ames, you didn't have to do that.” Sonic rubbed the back of his neck. He's mentioned struggling a little to get himself full meals with Tails tagging along, but he didn't mean to make her think she had to supply his food.
“It's no problem, Sonic!” The girl simply waved him off before using her knife to carefully pick up a slice of the cake and set it on Tails’ plate. “He mentioned how you guys have been cooking together lately and it's so cute!”
“Oh, yeah, it's a blast.” The teen decided to run with the topic change, setting his elbow on the table so he could rest his chin on his paw. “Little guy's pretty good. Won't be too long til he ends up being better than me.”
“Nuh uh! No way,” Tails firmly shook his end at that statement, moving around so he could sit on his knees to be taller. “I couldn't ever be better than you, Sonic.”
“No talking like that in my house, young man!” Amy scolded the fox with a stern look, reaching over to poke the tip of his nose. “I won't stand for it. Now let's enjoy this cake.”
Tails didn't argue, instead listening to the girl's command and taking a small bite of his slice of cake. He hummed around his fork, his twin tails wagging gently in delight.
Sonic wasn't surprised that the kid liked it. He'd eat anything mint flavored.
Meaningless conversation flowed between the three of them easily as they ate the cake. Sonic was glad that Tails was able to talk with someone other than him so effortlessly. It had been a long process, but they were making progress and that's all he cared about.
It didn't matter how long it'd take. His patience was endless when it came to his little brother, and he was more than happy to slow down for him.

“Look. Yer new here, I get it.” Sails grumbled, his mechanical arm resting on the hedgehog’s chest to force him to keep his distance, “But you need to learn our rules and fast.” He growled, eyes narrowing into a glare.
Sonic tried to keep his body from visibly wilting at the rejection. He wasn't used to being pushed away by his little brother, and it seemed to hurt worse the second time around.
Except they aren't his little brother, are they? Nine and Sails don't know him. They shouldn't trust him. But he needs them to. Sonic needs his brother(s?) to trust him to keep them safe, why won't they let him protect them?
That's his job, isn't it? He has to keep them safe from those who are hunting them or whatever awful thoughts are plaguing them. What good is protecting the world when he can't protect his world?
“Whaddya mean?” He decided to ask, firmly ignoring the way his voice wavered even after the fox in front of him raised a brow at it.
“I mean quit stickin’ yer nose where it don't belong.” Sonic tried to ignore the fact that only one of the pirate's ears folded down as he crossed his arms, shrinking into himself. “My tale ain't your business, so quit poking.”
“I didn't mean to offend you or anything,” Sonic said, raising his paws in surrender. He'd never want to push his brother to talk about something he didn't want to. Why didn't he just drop it? “I was just worried, y’know?”
“Don't worry over strangers, landlubber.” Sails warned, his metal arm retreating from the teens chest as he averted his gaze, “it'll only make things harder for ya.” He mumbled, almost too quiet for the other to hear.
“But you're not a stranger, Sails.” The older argued, watching the fox’s movements, “I know everything about you!”
“No, you don't.” The kit frowned, his fur bristling, “If ye did, ye wouldn't be here askin’ questions about a life that doesn't concern you.” Was the last thing he said before turning away from the hedgehog, quickly making his way to somewhere on the boat that wasn't near him.
Sonic's ears flattened against his head as he watched Sails walk away, his left paw holding his right arm in an absolute death grip. He groaned and ran his paws down his face.
This was his own fault.
He's always been one to preach about boundaries. He remembers he used to have to remind a 4 year old Tails quite often that sometimes people just didn't want to talk about or do certain things and that was okay.
So why didn't he keep his big, stupid mouth shut when he saw Sails start to pull away?
Sure, Sails wasn't technically Tails, but they had the same mannerisms. His tails twirling around themselves to appear as a single appendage, his eyes looking down to stare at his crossed arms, his fur proofing up, and his foot tapping against the ground were all signs that someone was pushing him too far. Sonic knew that, yet he wouldn't stop pushing.
Maybe it was the desperation to understand this two tailed fox. Because he wasn't his fox, but he was so close he might as well be his doppelganger. Yet the teenager didn't actually know him.
But he wanted to. He wanted to show the kit that he was the one the kid should trust. He wanted to prove to Sails that he was a free shoulder to lean on if he needed it.
A big brother who would always have his arms open, waiting to comfort the fox should he need it.
It was a need for the hedgehog. He so desperately needed his little brother to understand he was always here that he forgot that Sails wasn't his brother. Not in those blue eyes, anyway.
To Sails, Sonic was a stranger. He was just some guy they found on an island who begged to be let aboard their ship. They had only met a few hours ago.
He was, understandably, overwhelmed by the hedgehog. It seemed like the stranger knew almost everything about his life, except for one key detail; Sonic didn't exist in it.
And that's exactly what made Sonic keep pushing. He wasn't a part of Sails’ life, but he wanted to be. Because he knows what Tails’ life was like before meeting the hedgehog, and he needed to make sure Sails was safe.
Nine wasn't.
Mangey wasn't.
There had to be at least one variant of his little brother that was okay. The kid's safety couldn't only rely on Sonic, surely there had to be one of them that got off easy.
But he guesses that was just another assumption he was wrong about.
“Landlubber!” Sonic's ears twitched at that, swiveling around until they located the direction the shout came from. He turned around to see Batten flying above him.
“What’d ye say to Sails?” She asked, one hand resting on her hip as the other held the hilt of her sword. The bat nodded her head up towards the crow’s nest.
Squinting, Sonic could see Sails was leaning against the banister, his head hung low.
The hedgehog winced and rubbed the back of his neck, “I kinda pushed him about something I shouldn't have.” He admitted, ears folding down against his head. “Do you know how I can make that up to him?”
Batten’s frown deepened as she glanced up to the fox for a brief moment, “Don't do anything. He'll sort it out on his own.” She advised, lowering herself down to land beside the hedgehog. “And don't bring the topic back up again. Ever.”
“Noted.” Sonic tried to smile, but it was very obviously strained. He sighed and looked away from the fox, not wanting to be caught staring.
He wasn't used to leaving Tails alone. When the fox was upset he would always bring him a gift to make up for whatever it was he did.
But maybe it's time to stop treating these two tailed foxes like they're his little brother. It never seemed to work out in his favor.

tail wags
Sonic’s ear flicked at the sound of grass rustling behind as he rolled up the two sleeping bags. He was trying to rush so they could get on the move again, having gotten up and moving pretty late today. It had been a lazy morning for the two of them. Instead of running and flying down the road, the two had cuddled up and spent the early sunlight talking about whatever came to mind. Neither of them were really up to being too active today, but the hedgehog knew better than to stay in one spot for too long.
So he forced them up, but let the kid sit out of packing up to stretch his tails before they moved out. It was strange how hard it was to get on his feet this morning, the weight of the kid on his chest more comforting than he ever thought it could be. He didn’t like touching other people. He tried not to let it show around the kid, but physical contact made him want to physically curl away and bolt. He didn’t really get why, but it just wasn’t for him. Or– he thought it wasn’t for him. But somehow that kid managed to blow his mind again. It was insane how often he did that, but he supposes that’s just a trait you have to have in order to keep up with the fastest thing alive. There was more rustling, so Sonic decided to turn around and look at what was the cause of it. His brow furrowed as a confused smile curved his muzzle as he found the cause of the gentle noise.
Tails had his tails pinned against the ground, face scrunched up in annoyance. He hadn’t noticed the tween was looking at him, his attention fully on the two fluffy appendages. His ear flicked a few times, showing he was trying to solve something. "Whatcha doin, bud?" He asked, snorting when the fox jumped. The kit’s ears swiveled before focusing in on Sonic, his head soon turning to look over at him. "My tails aren't listening." He said, lifting a hand to point at his namesakes which allowed one of them to slip free. It started wagging behind him, causing him to huff and reach around to try and catch it. "Whaddya mean they aren't listening?" Sonic asked as he stuffed the sleeping bags into the backpack. It was a tight fit with the two of them, but he learned how to work around it. When they first started traveling together Tails had insisted he slept on the ground, but the tween refused. He lent his to the kid for the first few weeks until he had saved enough money to buy another. Sometimes he would still find loose fox hair in it. "They keep moving when I think about you even though I’m not telling them to!" The fox complained, having successfully recaptured his rogue tail. He held it and the other to his chest, but they still twitched excitedly against him. "Awh, kid.” A fond laugh was pulled out of the older as he walked over to the kid. Tails’ ear flicked as he approached, “They're wagging. Just means you're happy" He explained, reaching down to affectionately muse the kid’s bangs. "But it's never happened before," Tails said, frowning at the appendages. “It’s weird.” “Nah, it’s happened.” Sonic shook his head. He imagined it hasn’t happened much in the kid’s life yet, but he’d definitely caught the twin tails thrashing giddily behind him. “I’ve seen ‘em do it.” That got him to look up, brow furrowed as he soaked up the new information. He was like a little sponge, though squeezing him wouldn’t get him to let go of all the things he’d learned. You’d probably have to pry it straight out of his brain. “What about you? Does your tail ever wag?” The kit asked, head tilting enough to cause his ears to flop over. Sonic shrugged, reaching out to tug at one of the ears despite the swats he received from the younger’s hands. “Sure it does,” He said, snorting when the kid shook his head to free his ear from the hedgehog’s hold which caused it to hit him in the face. “You just haven’t seen it cause it’s small.” “I’ve never seen my tails wag.” Tails pointed out, glancing back at the mentioned appendages. His lips pursed as he considered the new information before turning to look at the tween again and pulled a face. “Are you lying again like you did with the Easter Bunny?” Sonic laughed at that, having forgotten about the times he tried to tell the kid about the usual holiday characters. No matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t convince the kid things like the Tooth Fairy existed. The first time Tails lost one of his teeth Sonic had tried to swap it out for a few mobiums. It took quite a while to even convince the kid to put it under his pillow, but the promise of mint candy got him to comply. Sonic had done a good enough job at being quiet when sneaking around to his sleeping bag, but no amount of silence could get that tooth without waking the kit up. The second the tween had touched his pillow, Tails shot into a sitting position as if expecting it to have been a badnik. There was just no way to get that kid to believe in them. It didn’t help that he held pretty much all the logic in the world in his tiny, 5 year old brain. Every time Sonic tried to make up a lie for one of Tails’ questions he’d get debunked.
“Nah, this one’s true, keed.” He shook his head, reaching around to poke one of the tails. It twitched in response, “You’re too little to keep all your happiness in ya, which causes your tails to wag.” Sometimes it was odd to teach the kid things outside of breaking badniks. It shouldn’t be. He was 5. He was at the age when kids would go to school to start their journey in learning what they needed to know as they grew up. Tails hummed, searching the older’s face to try and find something that would indicate that he wasn’t telling the truth. “That seems.. weird.” He decided, face scrunching as he tried to work it out in his head. “I have a way to prove it to ya.” Sonic grinned, knowing that Tails would really not like this idea. But curiosity blinded him of the mischief brewing in the older, his head tipping to the side in a silent question. They usually didn’t ask or say things that were obvious in their body language. Neither of them saw the point in it. “Tickling.” His grin widened. He enjoyed messing with the kid, being purposefully dramatic to get any sort of laugh out of him. Really, he just enjoyed hearing it. He wasn’t really sure why, but it was a more calming sound than anything nature could provide. “No!” The fox’s reaction was instant. He was in the air in a second, out of the hedgehog’s reach. Sonic laughed up at him, rising to his feet while holding his hands up in a mock surrender. “Alright, alright, I won’t.” He promised, nodding at the kit to land back down. Tails’ eyes narrowed, but he did as he was told. His feet softly touched the ground a few steps away from the tween for good measure, but it didn’t really matter when you considered the older’s speed. But Sonic was a hedgehog of his word, so instead of poking at the kit he settled for a hair ruffle. His hand was still swatted away with a pout anyway, but the twin tails swayed happily behind the kid. “See?” He pointed at the appendages, smiling as the younger blinked at them. “You just don’t realize when it happens.” Tails considered them for a few moments more before frowning. “I really don’t think they used to do that.” He mumbled, watching as his tails wagged. Sonic frowned as well, how could a kid go so long without ever feeling happy enough for his tails to wag? They shared a silence for a few seconds until the kit suddenly beamed, grinning up at the hedgehog. “Maybe they were broken and you fixed them!” And oh, if that didn’t make his heart swell up in the most painful way. Nothing about this kid was broken. Being born a little different wasn’t a bad thing and he hated that this poor kid had been convinced it was. If anyone was bad or broken it was that stupid village. They were the ones who tormented a child because they didn’t like that he stood out a little. But he didn’t mention it. Tails never did like talking about Westside, so Sonic tried to avoid it whenever he could. “I’unno. Maybe they just now figured it out.” The kid shook his head at that, smile still bright as ever, “They couldn’t have, I didn’t even know they were broken in the first place. Well— I did, but not like that.” “Okay–“ It was Sonic’s turn to shake his head before crouching down to be at eye level with the fox. “They weren’t broken, kiddo. They just needed a second to catch up.” He said, voice firm as he placed a hand on the younger’s shoulder. Tails’ head tilted again as he thought those words over, “..Like me on our runs?” “Exactly!” Sonic grinned, he didn’t even think of making that connection. “Nothin’ wrong with it, they just needed time.” The fox pursed his lips and nodded, satisfied with that answer so the tween ruffled his bangs as he stood back up. With his hands on his hips, he glanced around at what remained of their little campsite.
He had packed up everything, but the light indents in the grass still outlined where everything was. “Speaking of our runs, I think it’s ‘bout time we blow this joint.” He said, turning to look back at the kit with a hand outstretched, “whaddya say, keed?” Tails beamed back, his smaller hand immediately grabbing the older’s with a large smile, “Let’s speed!"
happy wednesday

If you had asked Sonic how he felt about being alone four years ago, he would've told you it was the most freeing feeling in the world.
It's not that he disliked people or didn't want to be around anyone. He had plenty of friends.
But there was something special about being able to run away from everyone and everything. He loved being able to disappear in the blink of an eye without worrying about someone trying to keep up with him.
He got to live his life the way he wanted. It was his favorite thing.
And then he met Tails.
He's always thought he wasn't fit to be part of a family. He had never been able to find someone who could even remotely keep up with him, so he didn't bother trying to find a family.
But Tails was able to keep up. And he did so without ever asking Sonic to slow down so he could. He was fine running on the hedgehog’s time, no matter how tired it made him.
And now, as he watched the red echidna bury the small coffin that held his little brother, he couldn't help but hate how alone he was now.
The guardian had been the one to offer a place on Angel Island for him. A small, secluded area that he had previously decorated for when the kid decided to come visit.
Of course he wasn't literally alone. Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, and the rest of their friends were all there to say their final goodbyes to the little fox. But that didn't change the fact that it felt like a part of himself died.
He didn't know it when he first met the fox, but it truly felt like Tails filled in a hole in his heart that he hadn't known was missing. But now that the piece was ripped out of him, it was easy to notice.
He wasn't sure how much longer he'd last without that fox. Everyone knew it, there was no Sonic without Tails. They were inseparable.
But they had been ripped apart. Whatever tether that held their unbreakable bond had been snapped, forcing them to go their separate ways.
He just wishes it was him who was forced to lay in a grave too soon rather than his baby brother.
Tails didn't deserve it. The poor kid had been fighting every sort of battle imaginable since the moment he was born and he was only eight.
The universe had no right to take him now. Not when he fought so hard to survive. Not when he gave every last piece of himself to protect it.
He could still feel the phantom traces of his brother's blood soaking into his fingertips. He could still see the way the life inside his big, blue eyes faded.
He could still feel the way the little strength that Tails held left his body, forcing him to let go of the person who promised to keep him safe as he bled out in his arms.
This was Sonic's fault.
Sonic wasn't sure why he ran.
To be perfectly honest, he hadn't even known he ran until he nearly greeted the Tornado with a very aggressive accidental kiss.
He wasn't sure what to do with her now. He could never be able to take care of the Tornado half as well as Tails did. And while he wasn't a bad pilot by any means, he knew he wasn't the best either. (That title went to the fox that now slept in the ground, his cold body protected by the dirt surrounding his coffin.)
He'd need to figure out what to do with the Cyclone as well. He didn't have a clue on how to pilot that one, it was quite a bit more complex than the Tornado.
After he was done sadly staring at the red biplane, Sonic hopped into the cockpit.
The lingering smell of mint is what finally broke him.
One of the few ways he could tell his brother was sneaking up on him was the way he smelled. It was always a migraine-inducing minty aroma, the scent of his favorite candy clinging to the fox's fur.
As strong as the smell was, it was comforting. It was how he reminded himself of the day he'd finally got that kid to believe he wasn't going to hurt him.
The first time that Tails ever had mint candy. Or, well, candy in general.
Sonic will never forget the way his eyes lit up, shining practically as bright as stars do when he put that first piece of candy in his mouth. And even though he was offered sweeter candies that kids his age normally enjoyed, he was firm in only eating the mint ones.
It was strange, but it was such a small thing then that it didn't really matter to Sonic. He didn't care what the kid liked to eat as long as he ate something. Even if it did have a painfully strong smell.
Sonic didn't bother with trying to wipe away his tears. Why should he, anyways? It was his brother's funeral for Chaos’ sake. He should be allowed to cry. (That didn't erase how pathetic and disgusted he felt. Did he really deserve to mourn his brother when he's the reason there's a funeral in the first place?)
He didn't get long to ponder it when something gently touched him.
It admittedly scared the shit out of him, but he knew exactly who it was before even looking towards them.
“I don't mean to interrupt your grieving,” Knuckles said guilty, his voice barely above a whisper. “But I wanted to let you know that you're welcome to stay on Angel Island with him.”
Sonic's not really sure if ‘staying with him’ is the right way to word this situation, but he's also not sure what the correct wording is so he decides to settle on a numb nod. He doesn't trust his voice to carry any sort of conversation right now.
Knuckles didn't say anything after that, but he also didn't move from where he was crouched atop the Tornado’s wing. The silence wasn't necessarily awkward, but it kept Sonic on edge.
“I know I'm not the best to talk to about emotions,” The echidna mumbled, running a paw through his quills as he spoke, “but I know what it's like to lose family. If you need help with grieving, you can ask.”
Despite the situation, Sonic managed to smile at the older mobian. He appreciated the offer a lot, and he knew he'd probably take him up on it whether he actually wanted to or not.
“I'll leave you be now.” The guardian said quietly before jumping off of the biplane’s wings. “If you wish to be alone from everyone, you can go into my cave.”
Sending the echidna a thumbs up made Sonic want to die. He was assaulted by the memories of when he and Tails first met the echidna. Back when he was unable to verbally speak, forced to hold conversations through expressions alone.
He wanted to scream, but his throat was throbbing from all the crying. He knows he should at least go see his friends, but he can't bring himself to look at any of them right now.
He decides to leave for Knuckles’ house when he feels his communicator buzz.
He gets to the cave on muscle memory alone, his mind occupied by playing the past four years on a sped up loop.
He felt insane. He would tell someone without a doubt that he's known Tails for forever, but it had only been four years since they met.
It wasn't until he collapsed on Knuckles’ bed that Sonic decided to check the message he received, not surprised to see it from Amy.
He didn't have it in him to fully read through the heartfelt message, but it was easy to understand from just skimming through it.
He figured responding to her message was the least he could do to keep her and the other from worrying about him right now.
He wasn't fine, and everyone knew that, but being around his closest friends and family wouldn't help right now.
The only thing that could help him was his little brother, but that wasn't in the cards for him. Not anymore. It's warm in the small cave, but Sonic still shivers as he curls into a ball.
He doesn't think he'll ever be warm again. Not when he felt his baby brother's body slowly grow cold.

Sonic never thought running too fast would ever be a problem. If you went fast enough nothing could be able to stop you.
Tails had been nagging him about it for a while though, scolding him every time he ran straight into a fight without stopping to think of what might happen.
It didn't matter to him though. Even if he somehow got hurt, it'd eventually heal and he'd be back on the run in no time.
But now that he was on his knees, cradling his brother as he desperately tried to stop the red from staining the white fur on his chest, he really wished he had listened.
The only reason this happened was because he ran too fast. He didn't stop to check for any sort of traps or hidden badniks, far too focused on beating Eggman so they could all go home.
He never thought that going too fast could get someone else hurt.
He still wasn't sure what happened. All he knew was that he spindashed into a motobug, then a laser fired and a horrible, loud scream followed.
It took him two seconds to realize it was his brother that screamed. He could feel his heart stop beating as he watched the fox drop to his knees, his paws clutching his chest.
Sonic had the kit in his hold a second later, whispering about a million apologies to him. Knuckles and Amy decided to deal with the combat, letting the hedgehog take care of the youngest.
They had managed to drag Eggman's attention to another area, which meant that the two brothers were alone.
Sonic had tried to pick the kid up to take him to a hospital, but Tails refused. He begged the older not to take him anywhere near a hospital.
He wanted to die in his brother's arms, not in a hospital bed.
Sonic tried to tell him that he wasn't going to die. They just needed to get to someone who could help him and it'd be fine.
But then Tails showed him his communicator.
The screen was colored in the brightest, most headache-inducing shade of red he's ever seen.
Written in a bright white text were the words, ‘!Vital Organ Critically Damaged!’
That was the message that was programmed to show if they were ever too injured to receive medical attention. Going to a doctor would be useless, they wouldn't be able to save him.
So Sonic just held him instead. He had called Knuckles and Amy a few seconds ago so they could come see him.
Tails whimpered and pushed into the hedgehog, clinging onto his chest.
“Just a little longer, buddy.” Sonic whispered, trying his best to keep his tears from falling as he held the fox tighter. He couldn't cry right now, Tails didn't deserve to see that.
His ears twitched at the sound of footsteps approaching. He turned to watch as Knuckles and Amy ran up to them with matching horrified expressions.
Amy dropped in front of them to grip the youngest’s paws, “Oh, Tails..” It was easy to see that she had already been crying, but her eyes grew wet once again.
Knuckles kneeled at Tails’ head, but stayed silent. He placed his paw on the back of the kit’s head, gently rubbing it with his thumb.
It wasn't long until a soft rumble filled the air. It was shaky and it stumbled every now and then, but it was there. And it broke Sonic's heart.
Tails was purring to try and comfort them. Even while he was dying, he decided to put his siblings first.
“I'm scared.” Tails admitted quietly, closing his eyes as he hid his face in his brother's shoulder.
“I know, bud.” The hedgehog ignored the way his voice wavered. He's not sure how much longer he can hold back his tears.
“You'll be okay, little one.” Sonic's never heard such a gentle voice come from the guardian, but he guesses that's because it was saved for moments like this. “Your fight is over. You can rest now.”
“I–I don't wanna go.” Sonic bit down on his tongue at the sound of Tails’s small, broken voice. Every whimper or whine that came from the youngest broke his already shattered heart even more.
He could feel a tear run down his face. He was going to just let it fall, but Amy reached over and gently wiped it away.
“Think of it this way,” She whispered, her gaze moving back to the eight year old, “You can always keep an eye on Sonic now and yell at him for pulling stupid stunts.”
That at least managed to put a smile on the fox’s muzzle, even if it was small.
The air fell silent around them. Sonic knew that other people had gathered around them by now. They were in Station Square after all, there's always people staring.
“Guys?” Amy’s hold on the youngest’s paws tightened at the quiet voice. He was basically whispering, too weak to talk any louder. “Please—Please look after each o-other.”
“Don't you worry about us, keed.” The response was natural. It's what he always said whenever Tails got too worried about them. It was sweet, but he tended to ignore his own needs when he focused on his siblings.
“We’ll be alright, bud.” Knuckles said, still continuing his gentle petting. The fox whimpered at the nickname. He wished he could hear Knuckles say it more.
“I'll keep these boys in line,” Amy promised, smiling at the kid despite the tears streaming down her face.
“We love you, kiddo.” Sonic whispered, nuzzling the younger’s head. He hated how he could feel the strength in his little brother's body fade out.
The small paw that had been clutching his chest finally let go, limply falling to the ground as the little fox released his final breath.
Sonic curled around the lifeless body, hiding his face away in the soft, golden fur as his tears began to fall down his face now that the hedgehog had stopped trying to hold them in.
Knuckles pulled Amy into a hug as she began sobbing. He ignored his own tears that trailed down his muzzle as he embraced his little sister.
Losing someone during a battle had always been a possibility, they all knew that.
But even so, none of them ever expected their youngest brother to be the first.
It wasn't right. He should've been the last of them to leave Mobius, not the first. He was far too young to be taken from them already.
But there was nothing they could do about it now.
Tails was gone.

drabble prompt; can we have some big sibs being protective over the baby? (tails as the baby, obv)
word count-636

“Alright, let's get started.” Amy said, clasping her hands together. She was standing in front of the large consoles that controlled the wall of monitors Tails had built.
“What’s the point in doing this?” A soldier, a brown raccoon, asked with a deep frown. “With Sonic dead there's no hope in us winning.”
“Sonic isn't dead.” Tails mumbled, his gaze locked onto the map sat atop the table everyone was gathered around.
“Then where is he?” The soldier asked, rolling his eyes. “You gotta grow up and accept that Sonic's–”
“Leave him alone.” Knuckles turned to the soldier to glare at him.
“I'm just saying!” The raccoon raised his paws defensively. “He needs to–”
“You've said enough, Ranger.” Amy frowned at him before sighing. “We're going to find Sonic, but right now we have to focus on pushing Eggman back.”
“Good luck with that.” Another soldier, a light blue lion huffed. “The closest thing we have to Sonic can't go outside without having a panic attack.” She made a point to look towards the little fox, rolling her eyes when he didn't move to argue with her.
Silver frowned at her, “He's going through a lot. Give him a break.”
“We're all going through a lot, Silver.” The lion said, crossing her arms. “But at least we're pulling our weight.”
“Come on, Quinn.” A gray cat sighed, “That's not fair.”
“Who cares about being fair, Hazy?” Ranger asked, frowning. “He's dealt with Eggman longer than any of us! He watched Sonic die, the least he could do is help out in the fights!”
“Hey!” Amy shouted, glaring at the raccoon and lion. “Both of you, stop it.” She scolded.
“You know we're right, Commander.” Quinn grumbled. “He's practically useless right now.”
More arguments broke out after that. Some defending Tails, but most berating him.
Silver went to join the conversation, but stopped when he felt a head push itself into his neck.
Looking down to his right, he found Tails trying to hide himself against the gray hedgehog. He was trembling slightly, ears pressed against his head as his paws clung to his tails that were twirled around each other.
Silver frowned, “Knuckles–” He looked up, stopping himself when he realized the echidna was standing now. He was arguing with Quinn, baring his teeth at her.
“Amy?” He turned to the pink hedgehog next, but she was busy trying to get everyone to stop yelling.
“Guys!–” Silver tried to raise his voice, but everyone else only got louder.
He groaned and looked around the room as he hugged the fox, trying to find a way to get everyone's attention.
His eyes eventually landed on the light switch beside the door.
Using his telekinesis, he flipped the switch down. The room went dark, causing the arguments to end in gasps as people looked around to figure out what happened.
Once it was just quiet mumbling, Silver flicked the lights back on. “Guys.” He called, watching as everyone finally turned to look at him. “You're scaring him.”
Knuckles and Amy immediately looked down at Tails, the latter's ears wilting at the sight of her brother.
Ranger scoffed and went to say something, but the pink hedgehog quickly beat him to it, “Silver, Knuckles, please go take him to his room and try to calm him down.” She ordered, looking at the two.
Silver nodded and shifted the little fox so he could pick him up as he stood from his chair. Knuckles walked ahead, opening the door for the hedgehog.
Amy smiled at them before turning back to the other mobians, specifically Ranger and Quinn, “We're gonna have a talk.” She decided, her smile dropping into a glare.
Silver could feel a shiver go down his spine at the sight.
He's just glad her anger isn't directed at him.

Wholesome prompt: sonic teaching tails how to play guitar?
word count-971
ao3 link
------------------
“Dude, this isn't rocket science.” Sonic said, laughing at the confused look on his brother's face as he repositioned the younger’s fingers again.
“Of course not. Rocket science is easier than this.” Tails grumbled, shifting to sit in a more comfortable position.
“You're being dramatic.” The hedgehog rolled his eyes before plucking the same three cords again to remind the kid of the melody. “It's not hard. It shouldn't even hurt, your fingers are destroyed.”
“It doesn't hurt.” The fox mumbled, pulling at the first string. He frowned at the guitar, “Even if it did, that's not the problem.”
“Then what is?” Sonic asked, gently placing his paw to cut off the noise. The younger seemed to shrink into himself at the fact his hero's attention was now fully on him.
Tails debated with himself on whether he should talk about his concerns. He ended up deciding against it and gave the guitar back to its owner. “Nothing.”
“If it's nothing then why are you giving my guitar back?” Sonic asked, raising a brow as he nudged the instrument back towards the other.
“Don't worry about it. It's not a big deal.” The kit said, setting the guitar in his brother's lap before standing up. “I should get back to working on the weapon upgrades for the Cyclone anyway. I still—” He was cut off by his own yip when his wrist was grabbed and pulled, landing him right in the hedgehog’s lap.
“Not today, kiddo.” Sonic shook his head as his arms banded around the fox's middle, the guitar laying on the floor of the workshop beside them. “I won't force you to learn it, you know that, but you seemed excited about it when you asked me to teach you. What's going on?”
Tails groaned at the tone of the older’s voice. He leaned his head back against the teens shoulder, “It's stupid.” He grumbled, “Seriously, I–”
“What did we talk about with that?” The kit bit his lip at that and started to fidget with his fingers. The older sighed, one of his paws gently taking the younger’s two to stop him, “If it's bothering you, it isn't stupid. Not to me.”
Tails stared at the paw atop of his own for a few quiet seconds as he argued with his own brain. He knew he wasn't winning this fight, so might as well let it play out. “I play the violin.”
“..Okay?” Sonic hesitated to answer, not having expected that. “What about it?”
“I looked it up. It's easier to learn guitar than to learn violin.” The kit explained, letting one of his tails drape across his lap as the other wrapped around the hedgehog. “And yet I keep screwing up the basics that I already know from violin.”
Sonic thought on it for a minute, his eyes trailing around the room before they landed on a cupboard. “Maybe we need to treat you like a true beginner, then.” He said, setting the fox on the ground before running to the cupboard to search through it.
“But I'm not a full beginner.” Tails said, his head tilting to the side in confusion as he watched the older, “Regardless, how are my mints going to help anything?”
“Just trust me, will ya?” The older grunted, pulling out a square package of some mint flavored gum. Tails wasn't crazy about gum, but he kept it so he'd have something to chew that wasn't his lip, tongue, or whatever writing utensil he used.
Tails’ confusion only grew once a stock of gum was presented to him, but he took it anyway, “What do you want me to do with this?”
“Give it a little kiss, Tails.” Sonic teased before rolling his eyes and poking the fox’s nose, “You never eat gum before? Chew it.”
“How does this help anything?” The kid asked as he unwrapped the gum, placing it in his mouth.
“The guy who introduced me to guitar said it helps.” The hedgehog shrugged and tossed the package over to the general area of where the cupboard was, earning an annoyed glare from his little brother.
He didn't pay attention to or though, already zipping off to dig in a new cabinet. He quickly emerged with a pair of headphones, running back over to his original spot and pulling the kid back onto his lap.
“Headphones?” Tails asked, not even bothering to fight against the older’s hold. “How–”
“You learn better when other people can't hear.” Sonic winked at him as he dug his phone out of his shoe, plugging in the headphones.
“How exactly do you plan on teaching if you can't hear when I mess up?” The fox mumbled, his ears twitching at the sound of him chewing the gum.
“Just trust me, kid.” The teen smiled as he turned on his music app, letting the songs shuffle as he handed the guitar back to the fox.
He gently positioned the kit’s finger again before playing the three cords again, resting his chin on the younger’s head.
Tails went to say something, but decided it'd be easier to simply not question his brother's antics. He went to pull the strings, a bit surprised he managed to copy the melody almost exactly. He was just a bit too slow.
He rolled his eyes when he felt the older squeeze him, knowing there was a grin on his face. “Yeah, yeah.” He mumbled despite knowing the hedgehog wouldn't hear him.
“See?” Sonic's voice was elevated now due to the music blasting in his ears, causing Tails’ ear to lower slightly, “Big bro knows best, keed.”
The fox rolled his eyes and elbowed the older in his ribs, but couldn't help the smile that grew when the hedgehog laughed at him.
He had the best, most annoying big brother ever.

“Come on, Mangey.” Prim sighed, placing a hand on her hip as she grabbed the bridge of her nose. The mentioned fox tilted his head at the bat. “It's only three letters.”
“I thought he'd get ‘fly’ immediately.” Gnarly grumbled, crossing his arms over his chest. “Considering that's what he does now.”
“He can say feelings just fine, but can't get fly.” Thorn mumbled, shifting slightly against Birdie. The group were relaxing in the treehouse, soaking in the warm sun.
Mangey was curled up in the newest member’s lap, a scruffy blue hedgehog with incredibly messy quills. They'd met him when the little fox had wandered off one day without letting any of them know. The hedgehog had found him asleep in a pile of mud and managed to bring him back to the group safe and sound.
“Maybe he's just not ready yet.” The hedgehog, Spirit, suggested. He was idly scratching the fox's ear, leaning against a tree. “I mean, I couldn't talk until I was thirteen.”
“Really?” Prim asked, let the hand on her nose fall to her side. “What got you talking?”
“I don't think there was a specific thing.” Spirit shrugged, “My brother and sister tried for years to get me to talk. Nothing different happened. I just couldn't talk one day and then the next it was the easiest thing in the world.”
“So you're saying we're gonna have to wait until he's thirteen for him to talk?” Gnarly asked, clearly not happy about waiting.
“Maybe. Or shorter or longer or maybe even never at all.” The teen looked down at the kit in his lap, smiling when he saw him sleepily rub his eyes. “He'll talk again when he's ready. Nothing we can do but wait.”
Mangey let out a squeaky yawn before deciding to fully curl into a ball atop the hedgehog’s lap. The soft petting made him sleepy.
Spirit smiled fondly at the kid, reaching over to grab a piece of fabric to use as a makeshift blanket.
“Guess we can't argue that.” Prim mumbled with a shrug, looking back over her shoulder. “Hangry’s been gone a while. I'm gonna go check on him.”
“I'll come with you.” Thorn decided, already on her feet before the bat could refuse her company. Prim went to question it, but stopped when she noticed Spirit was starting to drift off too.
“You come too, Gnarly.” She quietly said instead, motioning for the echidna to follow. He looked confused, but followed the girls with only a few grumbles.

Tails has always liked fire.
Sonic has too, but he mostly likes it because it's the opposite of water.
For Tails, fire was a friend. It kept him warm when his fur wasn't able to do so on its own. It cooked his food and provided a perfect mood for spending a calm night with his friends.
It protected him.
Even before he met Sonic, fire protected him during one of the scariest moments in his life.
He doesn't remember why he decided he had to be the one to take on the armada that had attacked Cocoa Island. He learned to believe it was just a ‘he was there, so he might as well do it’ situation. It didn't really make sense to him though, he was usually too scared to do anything when he was four.
But he did it anyway.
Fighting the Battle Kukku wasn't so bad. They had plenty of guns and other weapons, but it was pretty easy to overwhelm them by throwing a bomb or two.
The hardest fights were against Speedy and his dad, The Great Battle Kukku. They dragged on for what felt like forever, and he was so sore by the end of it all.
He was too sore, in fact. He couldn't move once he killed The Great Kukku. He could only limply cradle the stones as the ship fell towards the ocean. He wasn't sure why the Battle Kukku were so intent on collecting these stones, but it had to mean they were important.
There was nothing else alive on the ship but Tails.
Well–nothing except the fire that was left behind during the battles.
It was so hot it felt like he was being burned alive, but it was still the safest he'd ever felt. The warm flames circled him protectively, not letting anything else come near him or the stones.
He wasn't sure how he survived the crash or how he even managed to get off the island. All he knows is that he fell asleep in the warmth of the flames, and then he was back on Westside Island.
Sometimes he still wished he never woke up at all.
He still felt the lingering warmth of the fire when he woke up. It didn't last long, but it was nice.
He's liked fire ever since. He was always gentle when near a new flame, always taking extra precautions to make sure it wouldn't die out.
He owed it that much. It kept him alive all those years ago, so it was only fair he repaid the favor now.

wrote this in three hours cause my other angst fics aren't close enough to finish so it's not as good as it can be but i wanted to put the imagery in everyone's brain lmao
happy broken bond sunday everyone <3
Sonic and Tails were angry.
Which isn't entirely unusual for them during fights, Knuckles notes as his fist collides with another motobug.
But this time it was different.
This time, they were angry with each other.
Knuckles has heard about them fighting before, but this is the first time he's ever seen it happen. It's such a surreal, unthinkable situation and yet it was happening right before his very eyes.
The usual witty banter the brothers would shout to rile up their human nemesis was completely gone, replaced by a silence that hung heavy with anger as the destroyed badniks in a much more aggressive manner. (Knuckles didn't think Tails could ever get more explosive than he was, but he was very quickly proven wrong today.)
Eggman seemed to notice the change too, unsurprisingly. He kept poking them about it, curious about their silence.
Knuckles, while not one to usually mediate fights, tried to get some information. But when he'd ask them, he'd be shrugged off with a grumble.
It was a little worrying, to be honest.
Knuckles freezes when there's another explosion, but this time accompanied by a loud yelp. He turned to the sky, eyes searching for the little fox that was handling the buzzbombers just in time to watch as he fell.
Smoked trailed him, and Knuckles quiet prayed that the way it looked like it was coming from the kid's tails was just a trick of the eye.
But before the echidna got to even think about running to catch the fox, a blue of blue shot through the air, taking Tails with it.
Sonic was behind Knuckles a second later, trusting him to provide cover as he looked over Tails’ injuries.
But as soon as he was put down, the fox pushed his brother away. “I'm fine.’
“No, you're not.” Sonic argued, wrapping a paw around the youngest’s arm to drag him closer again, “Stop acting like this.”
“Leave me alone, Sonic.” Tails frowned, trying to tug his arm back. “Despite what you think, I can take care of myself.”
“For the love of Chaos, Tails, really?” Knuckles’ brow furrowed as listened to the quiet argument. What happened between them? “You're being dramatic.”
“That's so ironic coming from you of all people.” The kit argued back, rolling his eyes.
“In case you haven't noticed, we're in the middle of a battle right now, Tails.” Sonic leaned down to be at eye level with the little fox, “We don't have time to deal with this tantrum.”
“Because that's all it is, right?” Tails grumbled, pushing the hedgehog away. “All you ever do is deal with me, huh?
“If you would stop being a brat every time I do something you don't like then I wouldn't have to deal with anything, would I?” Knuckles could feel his expression morph in a mix of shock and anger. What had gotten into these two?
When he turned around to check on his brothers, he could see how Tails’ eyes were shining with tears. Knuckles never liked it when the fox cried.
Sonic didn't seem to fully understand what he said until he saw the expression on the youngest’s face. His eyes immediately filled with regret as he processed his own words.
Tails sniffed and scrubbed at his eyes, backing away when Sonic reached out for him. “I'm so sorry adopting a mangey child wasn't the happily ever after you were hoping for, Sonic.” Is the last thing the kid said before turning and flying back into the battle.
“Tails, wait!” Sonic shouted after him, but heavily groaned when he realized the kid wouldn't listen to him. He ran a paw down his face as he stared after his little brother.
“What happened between you and the kid.” Knuckles demanded more than asked, roughly turning Sonic to face him. This is the first time he's ever seen the hedgehog make Tails cry and he wanted some answers.
“It's been a long morning, okay?” Sonic sighed and shook his head. “I'll explain more later, but I gotta go apologize to–”
Sonic's sentence was cut off by another, much louder explosion than the previous ones.
The teenagers turned to find the source of it, their eyes widening as they watched a building collapse.
And Tails was nowhere in sight.
“Tails?!” Sonic screamed, speeding over to the destroyed building to search his brother. Chaos, please let the kid be okay.
He could hear Knuckles not far behind, also calling out for the fox, but he didn't care. His full focus right now was finding Tails, he didn't care about anything else.
It didn't take long to find him.
Or– it didn't take long to find most of him.
Tails was unconscious. Thick streams of blood spilled from a gash on his head where his left ear was supposed to be. His left arm was also missing, the hole at his shoulder gushing out more blood.
And, oh Chaos, how long is the pole impaled through his chest? It's so close to his heart. It didn't pierce it though, right? It couldn't have. Sonic can lose Tails. He was going to be fine, right?
Sonic pushed down the rising nausea, dropping to the fox’s side to cradle his head with one paw as the other searched for a pulse. He was muttering to himself, pleading with someone to keep his brother alive.
His gloves were quickly staining red as his paw frantically felt around the kit's body for some sign of life.
His panic grew when he couldn't find anything. It had to be because he was shaking, right? There's no way Tails is– he has to be fine.
“Sonic.” The hedgehog stilled at his name being called. He didn't look away from his brother's body though, even as a tear fell from his cheek. How long has he been crying? “Let me see him.”
The teen shook his head. He couldn't step away and let someone else take his place, Tails needed him.
Knuckles stepped around him, wincing at the sight of the little fox. He kneeled down to check for a pulse, but he knew he wouldn't find anything.
Tails was a strong kid, but there was no chance at surviving being impaled through the heart.
Sonic had leaned down to press his forehead against Tails’s, whispering a million apologies to the kid.
Knuckles closed his eyes and took a deep breath before turning to look at the hedgehog.
The younger met his eyes, a deep plea for the echidna to tell him his brother would be okay.
“He's gone.”

Batten couldn't stop the gasp she let out as she tried to ignore the wet feeling in her eyes.
She knew that kid had an explosive side to him, but she never thought it would've ended like that.
The bat was ready to fly straight over to the crater Sails' bomb had left, but a big, purple paw on her chest stopped her.
She turned to find Catfish looking at her sadly. His large ears were folded against his head as he numbly shook his head, turning around to return to the task at hand.
Batten glanced between the cat and crater, fighting with herself on what to choose.
She hesitantly flew after Catfish, quickly swiping at her eyes. She knew she didn't show it in the best way, but she loved that kid. She had practically raised him on her own before they stumbled upon Dread, Black Rose, and Catfish.
She didn't think losing him would ever really impact her. Losing people never had before. But despite it all, tears continued to gather no matter how many times she wiped them away.
She was more attached to Sails than she even realized. But it didn't matter anymore, did it?
Sails was gone.
Batten would never get to give him another flying lesson ever again. She'd never get to snatch away his sea dog when he stopped paying attention to it just to end up giving him her own one anyway.
She wouldn't get to have another quick spar with him, having to learn how to work around his gizmo. She wouldn't be able to sit on the mast to watch over him after he curled up for a nap in the crow’s nest.
They were all little things, but it was their little things. It was things she enjoyed doing with that little fox, one of the few highlights in their otherwise boring, repetitive lives.
But now they were gone and Batten’s world grew darker. Her cheerful sunrays the kit gave her were now blocked out by the cloud of dread that settled over her body at the realization she lost what was probably the most important thing to her.
She couldn't even remember the last time she had cried.
Batten lost Sails. And it felt like a piece of her died with him.

“So, how's it feel to be the errand boy for once, Dread?” The echidna rolled his eyes before turning to give the bat an unimpressed frown.
“Shut yer mouth, Batten.” He grumbled, turning his attention back to the tree he was climbing. The woman snorted but ended up flying away to look for the little fox that came with them to the small island.
Once he collected the three coconuts this tree held, he looked around the island to try and get a glimpse of yellow or white fur.
He stiffened when something smacked into the back of his head, quickly turning to look behind him. He could see Batten waving him over, a certain glint in her eyes he wasn't used to seeing.
With a frown, Dread jumped down from the tree and ran over to where his fri– crewmate was. Batten pulled him behind a rock when he was close enough, motioning to keep his voice down.
“What's wrong with ye?” He whispered, raising a brow when the bat carefully peeked around the rock they were crouched behind.
“Look.” She nodded her head to tell Dread to take a peek himself. When he did, he figured he was seeing things.
He was pretty sure Sonic went back to his home.
“Who is that?” He asked as he ducked back behind the rock. It couldn't be Sonic, could it?
“Not sure.” Batten mumbled as she turned to face Dread. “I saw Sails with him.”
Dread felt even more confused now. Sails didn't go up to strangers without the crew with him. Was he fooled by this landlubber’s disguise?
The surge of anger that passed through his nerves at the thought of the youngest crewmate being hurt by this landlubber was a strange feeling, but he welcomed it.
He found he actually enjoyed protecting the crew. For once, it seemed to be more important than any treasure in the sea.
Dread drew his sword as he peeked out from the rock once again, surprised to see that the hedgehog was gone.
He slowly rose to his full height, eyes darting all around the surrounding area to try and locate the stranger. Batten stood up with him, carefully wrapping a hand around her own sword.
Dread nearly jumped out of his skin when a finger tapped his shoulder. He quickly whipped around, making sure to keep Batten behind him as he aimed his sword at whoever touched him.
Sails raised a brow at the echidna's actions, his head tilted to the side in confusion.
“Sails?” Batten asked, equally as confused as the little fox. Her eyes carefully scanned over the fox, looking for any injuries as his mechanical arm slowly lowered the sword pointed at his face.
“Aye, lad.” Dread sighed heavily, resheathing his sword, “Where'd ye go?”
“Just over there,” The kit jabbed his thumb to the right, exactly where that landlubber was standing moments ago.
Just as the echidna was about to ask the fox about the hedgehog, the stranger appeared at the youngest’s side. He had a lazy grin on his muzzle as he threw an arm around the other's shoulder.
“Get yer paws off Sails, ye landlubber!” Batten growled, pulling out her sword but refraining from pointing it at the hedgehog just yet.
Sails and the hedgehog seemed to exchange a glance at that, “Uh, it's alright, Batten.”
“What’d ye mean is alright?” Dread asked, glaring at the hedgehog. He was very quiet, “That ain't Sonic, Sails.”
“I know he ain't Sonic, Dread.” The fox rolled his eyes, gesturing to the mobian leaning against him, “His name's Tonic.”
“Tonic?” Batten questioned, the grip on her sword tightening.
Sails nodded, a paw resting on his hip as the hedgehog gave them a two finger salute. “He ain't sure how he washed up here, but he has no way to find his crew. Figured we could go ask Captain Rose if there's anything we can do for ‘em.”
“Are ye sure, Sails?” Batten looked down to the fox, her pose relaxing slightly when she saw how calm he was.
“He ain't gonna hurt us.” The kit argued, ending the conversation by walking away. Tonic was behind the fox immediately, not caring to stick around the bat and echidna without him.
“We're gonna keep an eye on tha’ one, right?” Batten crossed her arms as she looked over to Dread. The echidna nodded with a frown, not taking his eyes away from the hedgehog.
He didn't trust him. But Sails did, and he knows that kid has a harder time trusting people than anyone else abroad Angel's Voyage 2.0.
Black Rose might give him a chance for Sails, but he's absolutely done for if he does anything to hurt the fox.
It had become an unspoken rule between the crew after they had finally learned the full extent of the kit’s past.
Sails was their number one priority now.

Sails hummed to himself as he carefully wiped down his sword, perched atop the banister of the Angel Voyage 2.0’s crow nest. One foot rested atop the railing as the other dangled, swaying along with the gentle rocks from the ocean.
He didn't really realize how much he missed the relaxing waves as they carried the ship along the surface of the water. Sure, the fight was fun while it lasted, but it was also incredibly draining.
He could tell the others felt that way too. Dread and Black Rose didn't even take a moment to explain the role switch between them, leaving the crew clueless as they went straight to bed.
He frowned as his neck throbbed painfully once again, pausing his cleaning to rub it. He had been apparently nicked pretty badly by the bomb he and Mangey built, the back of his neck was bleeding quite a lot.
Thankfully, the other fox was able to catch it before he'd lost too much blood.
It was strange, talking with someone who was basically himself but still so wildly different. He liked Mangey, though.
Nine, however, is a different story.
He didn't dislike him, but he wasn't the biggest fan either. He could understand his frustrations and motivations though.
Sometimes he feels like he would've fallen down a similar path had Batten never found him.
“What're ye doing?” Sails’ ear perked at the voice, turning to find Batten as she landed in the crow’s nest. Speak of the devil.
“Jus’ giving this a good scrub.” The fox shrugged, holding up the sword.
The bat's eyes were trained on the kit’s other paw, however. Sails tensed when he realized she had that worried glint in her eyes again, immediately making his paw drop from his neck.
“Ye feelin’ okay?” She asked, walking over so she could lean over the banister, squishing down the fox's leg.
Sails rolled his eyes, “M’fine, Batten.” He mumbled, tossing the rag he was using to clean his sword to the deck before resheathing the blade.
Batten frowned at him before turning her gaze to the ocean, “I haven't seen you fly since ye set off that bomb of yours.” She said, using her finger to trace gentle, miscellaneous patterns on the younger’s leg.
The kit bit his lip at that, also turning to look at the sea. The sun was beginning to set, “Just tired.”
They were silent for a few minutes after that before Batten broke it with a sigh, “Ye aren't good at bluffing, Sails.” She turned to look back into his eyes at that, a worried frown still tugging in her lips.
Sails could feel a frown of his own start to form, but he didn't respond.
“Look, Sails,” The bat looked down as she tried to work out her sentence, “I know I ain't the best at showin’ it, but ye know I care, right?”
The kit’s brow furrowed, “‘Course I know that, Batten. Ye raised me.” He said, turning to look at her.
“I know.” Batten sighed and looked up to meet the younger’s eyes, “I just need ye to know you can talk ta me when things are rough. And trust me, I know when they get rough for ya.”
Sails fell silent once again, unsure of how to respond to that. He knew Batten cared for him, but he always felt that asking her for anything more was asking too much.
She saved his life. She raised him even though she didn't have to. Sails knew he already owed her so much, he couldn't possibly ask for more favors.
Instead of answering her, Sails hesitantly pushed himself into her arms for a hug. He nuzzled his head into the crook of her neck, allowing his tails to wrap around her body.
Batten, with almost as much hesitance, wrapped her arms gently around the cub. She placed her chin atop his head, closing her eyes as she let him soak up the affection.
They ended up staying in the crow’s nest for the rest of the day, snuggling up to watch the sun set before they drifted off to sleep together.
Their bond may seem strange to outsiders, but it was perfect to them. And that's all that mattered.

It felt like the world had stopped once the ground collapsed. Tails couldn't breathe, his eyes darting all across the area searching for a speck of blue. He even leaned out of the biplane to try and get a better look.
Sonic was right in the center when it all caved in.
And now he was completely out of sight.
The two of them were alone out here. Well, aside from Eggman, but he didn't count. He needed
Turning the plane into basically a nosedive, Tails fumbled with his communicator as he sent out about a hundred distress signals to every communicator he's ever built.
He didn't bother with properly landing the Tornado. He just got her wheels on the ground and jumped out, immediately flying into the hole in the ground to search for his brother.
“Sonic!” He cupped his paws over his muzzle as he called for the hedgehog, his eyes squinting as they tried to adjust to the dark area. He's never been so thankful to have natural night vision. “Sonic, where are you?!”
His ears strained as they tried to listen for the teenager, but it was hopeless. The sound of crumbling rocks and broken badniks filled his ears.
Tails carefully landed on a piece of rock that looked stable enough to hold him as he turned to his communicator, quickly pulling up his tracking program.
Sonic was so far down.
Taking a deep breath, Tails began to carefully descend the hole as quickly as he could. He flew down most of the way, but he had to occasionally pause to get his stamina back up.
The hole led him down to a cave system of some kind. He didn't care enough to take in the area, immediately turning around to try and find his brother.
He found Metal first.
Though, the robot didn't seem to notice his presence just yet.
Deciding he definitely did not have time to fight with Metal, Tails activated his arm cannon and aimed it at the robot’s head.
He didn't usually use the cannon’s full strength, but he didn't care right now. Metal was out of the way.
And him being in pieces was an advantage anyway. It would take Robotnik longer to rebuild him.
Also, getting rid of the badnik finally revealed the organic blue hedgehog Tails had been searching for.
Who wasn't awake.
“Sonic!” The fox cried out despite knowing the older wasn't going to respond. He deactivated the arm cannon as he slid to his knees beside the teenager, his paws flying to his neck to check for a pulse.
He did eventually find one, but it was so weak.
He needed to get Sonic out of here.
“It's okay, big bro.” Tails whispered, bringing his paw from his hero's neck so it could linger over his heart for a second. “I'll get you out of here.”
The fox hesitantly stood from the hedgehog’s side so he could look around the area. The risky option seemed to be going back up the hole they fell from, but it was also the fastest since he didn't know this cave system. He wouldn't be able to tell which direction led to the surface.
Right when the kit decided to look up the hole to map out a route to take, something exploded at the top of it.
Several large boulders dropped down and Tails just barely managed to get out of the way before one of them crushed his chest.
Unfortunately, the same couldn't be said for his tail.
He yelped as he fell to the ground, doing his best to keep his tears from falling due to the amount of pain that shot through his tail. He couldn't cry right now, Sonic needed him.
Tails groaned as he sat up, examining the rock that fell on him to decide the best way to lift it.
It didn't seem to be holding up any of the other rocks, so he quickly propped it up just enough so he could pull his tail out.
He winced when he carefully grabbed hold of the appendage, wanting to feel it to get a better idea of the damage.
He definitely wasn't going to be flying anytime soon.
The sound of harsh coughing pulled his attention away from his broken tail. He quickly turned to where his brother had been, almost sighing in relief when he saw he was awake.
“Sonic!” Tails was on his feet in seconds, running to the hedgehog’s side but hesitating to touch him just yet. He wasn't fully sure just what kind of injuries he had. “Here,” He carefully moved the hero into a sitting position against the side of the small cave they were in, hoping it'd be easier on him.
Right as he was about to pull away from the teen, Sonic's coughing got a whole lot worse.
Tails almost passed out when he saw blood spit out of his brother's mouth, landing on the white fur on his chest.
They needed to get out of here. Now.
“O-Okay,” The fox quickly turned his attention to his communicator to try and get an idea on which way they needed to go to get out of this cave. He could technically spindash up, but he didn't want to risk causing more of the ceiling to cave in.
Sonic groaned and squinted, desperately trying to see in the dark, “Tails?” He mumbled, just barely able to make out the yellow blob in front of him.
“Yeah, I'm here, Sonic.” He didn't look up from his communicator as he let his good tail wrap around his brother. He couldn't get a signal.
“Mmm.. bud?” Tails’ ear twitched at his brother's raspy voice. He needed to figure something out, they couldn't sit here forever. “I can't feel my legs.”
If the watch wasn't attached to his wrist, Tails is positive he would've dropped it at that.
“L-Like,” He stuttered, knowing what he was about to ask was stupid. He knew what the hedgehog meant, “Like you're not in pain?”
He whimpered when the hero numbly shook his head.
“I..” Sonic started, but quickly pivoted off the topic, “Are you okay, bud?”
Compared to Sonic, Tails was more than okay. A broken tail was nothing, he's handled it before in much worse conditions.
“I'm sorry, Sonic.” The fox isn't exactly sure what he's apologizing for right now, but if he rambles long enough he'll probably find something, “I can't get a signal, I–I don't know how to get out of here. I–”
“Hey,” Sonic somehow managed to interrupt the fox despite his voice being much quieter. He brought a paw up to gently cup his brother's face, “You've got nothin’ to be sorry for, keed. Promise.”
Another coughing fit takes hold of the conversation before Tails can respond to his brother. He did his best to rub the older’s back in a feeble attempt to comfort him, wincing at the red the spilled from his mouth.
Sonic stared down at the blood clinging to the fur on his legs, but Tails is fairly sure he has no idea it's there.
“Y’know what's crazy?” Tails hummed in response to his brother's question, deciding to turn on the flashlight built into his communicator so the hedgehog could see. “I love you, kiddo. And I feel like I never tell ya.”
“You tell me, Sonic. Just in your own ways.” Tails assured him, still looking at his communicator. No signal.
“I just think I should've been more o’vious.” The hedgehog shrugged, leaning down so his head could rest against the fox’s. “You're imp’rtant to me.”
“I–I know, Sonic.” Tails sniffed and rubbed his eyes. He had pulled up Sonic's vitals on his communicator since he wasn't going to receive a signal anytime soon.
Watching them drop made him want to scream.
Sonic watched his brother's face for a few seconds before patting his thigh, ignoring how weird it was to not feel it, “C’mere.”
“I don't wanna hurt you..” Tails said, shaking his head. He didn't take his eyes off the communicator until he heard his brother scoff.
“Hurt what? My legs that I can't even feel?” The hedgehog rolled his eyes before opening his arms, “Jus’ c’mere before I pull you over and actually end up hurting something. I'm cold.”
Tails wanted to argue, but decided against it. If this was—his brother at least deserved this. So he crawled onto the older’s lap, draping his tails across his body to keep him warm.
One of Sonic's paws immediately began to pet the tails, but stopped when he felt the very obvious kink in one of them.
He sighed as his head dropped to rest atop the younger’s, “Thought you said you were fine, kiddo.” He didn't. He hadn't even answered that question, but he decided not to point it out.
They went silent for a while after that, soaking up each other's hug for the last time.
“Kid?” Sonic asked quietly, trying his best not to cough to avoid getting blood on the fox.
“Yeah, Sonic?” Tails was just as quiet. He closed his eyes when he felt tears gathering, not wanting to cry on Sonic.
“This isn't your fault.” Sonic reminded him, one of his paws weakly rubbing the kid's back. He had to hurry this up, he didn't have a lot of time.
“I–” Tails tried, but the older pivoted from the topic to keep the kit from explaining why he thinks this would be his fault.
“I don't think I wanna be buried.” The hedgehog admitted, looking up at the ceiling of the cave. “Never thought about it before, but y’know sitting in one place isn't my style.”
Tails bit down on his tongue to keep himself from whining as the teen continued, “Think you can put me in the Tornado or something? Maybe a bottle you could keep on that little belt of yours. That'd be fun. Could always be with you.”
“S–Sure, Sonic.” The kit choked out, trying his best not to break down at how casually his brother was talking about this. He hated that.
Sonic nuzzled into the fox’s fur, relaxing into it, “I love you, Miles. I really do. You're the best thing a hedgehog like me could ever have.”
“I–” Tails had to pause for a second to keep his composure, turning to push his himself into the older as much as possible, “I love you too, S–Sonic.”
Sonic smiled sadly at the kid as his eyes fell close, no longer having the strength to keep them open.
His body fell completely. He would've fallen over if it wasn't for Tails.
“Sonic?” The kid didn't even bother trying to hide the panic in his voice. He knew they were nearing the time, but he didn't want to say goodbye yet. He didn't ever want to say it. “Sonic, open your eyes right now. Sonic, please!”
Shaking the older’s shoulders did nothing. Sonic wasn't waking up, and he knew that. But a part of him wanted to keep trying.
He needed his big brother. He didn't know how to go on without him.
Tears spilled down his face faster than he'd be able to stop but he didn't care. He'd cry a million tears if it meant he could have his brother back.
Hearing his communicator chime, Tails glanced down to read the screen.
Signal Found! Locating route to nearest hospital…
He stared at it as it mocked him for a total of two seconds before he ripped the watch off his wrist, throwing it against the wall across from him.
That damn thing was just like its creator.
Useless.

Idk if you’re still taking requests for Drabble prompts, if not feel free to ignore and/or delete this, but I was thinking of a scenario where Sonic and Tails are sleeping together all cuddled up, and Sonic wakes up to see Tails still asleep, incredibly relaxed, with his tongue sticking out juusst a bit. Basically Sonic sees Tails doing a Blep™️ and it’s very cute
word count-1010
-------------------
Being a hero is hard work.
Yes, Sonic did technically put himself in that position, but society enabled him so he’s still allowed to complain.
That doesn’t mean he would stop being a hero. He enjoys it, and saving the people of Mobius is one of his favorite past times.
But it still exhausts him. Sonic has his limits, you know! And sure, he has far more stamina then any normal mobian, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t get tired.
But people won’t rely on a tired hero to save them so Sonic, being the smart guy he is, made Mobius believe he couldn’t get tired. He made the people believe he didn’t have limits.
Everyone on the planet believed it!
Well..
Everyone but Tails.
Tails saw Sonic’s limits.
Tails helps take care of Sonic when he reaches those limits.
Tails is the only thing on this planet that has seen Sonic at his limit.
Which is exactly why Tails is currently sleeping ontop of Sonic, keeping him from moving.
And unlucky for Sonic, they were outside basking in the sun when the little fox had climbed ontop of him.
Which meant he was going to be stuck for hours.
Sonic knew this tactic. Tails always did it when he noticed Sonic was just the tiniest bit slower.
He would stop their run, using hydrating as an excuse because he knew Sonic would never say no to a water break when he asked.
Then the second Sonic’s sprawled out on the grass, Tails plops himself right on his chest, curled into the fluffiest ball you will ever lay your eyes on and making the loudest purrs he possibly can in hopes of getting Sonic to sleep.
And it works.
Even if Sonic’s mind and body feel awake as ever, he will fall asleep without fail.
This is what he gets for adopting a genius as his little brother.
Usually, Tails will wake up before Sonic. He’ll still be laying on the hedgehog’s chest, providing a comforting weight while giving him the most mischievous yet innocent smile Sonic’s ever seen, politely asking if he had a good nap.
He’s such a handful sometimes, but Sonic wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Every now and then, Sonic will wake up before Tails does.
And he thinks it might just be his favorite thing in the world.
Sonic’s not an idiot, he knows the kid’s had a rough go. Nobody who has it good is going to abandon their home island for some stranger without second guessing it.
Tails never did that. He never looked back, never even wanted to talk about Westside. He wanted nothing more than to forget it once he left.
Being able to see his kid fully relaxed was a better sight then the thousands of sunsets Sonic’s seen combined, even if at the cost of a run.
When Tails is fully relaxed, he uncurls from his little fluffball of protection. His tails will fall to his side, his breathing completely evened out. His ears don’t strain, causing them to flop over.
And he bleps.
Which is when Tails’s tongue stickd out ever so slightly. Sonic’s been calling it bleping for about 2 years now, and in those years he’s only seen it a handful of times.
But it’s so. damn. cute.
Ever since Tails built them phones, mainly for talking with friends when there isn’t an immediate threat, Sonic has been taking pictures of the kit in his fully relaxed position every time he’s blessed with seeing it.
Tails doesn’t know about it.
That's why Sonic has to slowly, and quietly, get his phone out of his shoe. It’s one of the most stressful things he’s ever done.
One wrong move and he loses his picture.
Sonic doesn’t have a strategy for it, so if you’re planning on taking your own blep pictures; good luck. That’s all the advice he can give you.
Oh, and remember to turn off your flash.
Sonic didn’t remember that.
Obviously, the bright light ruined everything. Tails’ nose scrunched as his brow furrowed, annoyed by the sudden brightest against his face. One of his eyes opened up half-way, confusion clear on his face when he saw the hedgehog’s phone.
Flash is the worst.
“Sonic?” Tails’s other eye opened as he looked up to his brother, who shushed him.
“My bad, go back to sleep.” He mumbled, fumbling with the flash button to tun it off.
“Were you taking a picture?” The fox brought a hand up to rub at his eyes, attempting to wake himself up more.
“No.” Sonic lied, and he knew Tails knew he lied. Especially because of the look he received.
“Uh-huh.” Tails shook his head before sitting up, stretching his arms out with a yawn. “Since you have your phone, what time is it?”
“Uhhh,” The teen squinted at the small numbers, “three forty-eight.”
“Already?” The kit asked, rubbing his eyes again. “Wow, sorry. Didn’t mean to sleep that long.”
“Nah, it’s good, li’l bro.” Sonic waved it off. He sat up, causing the younger to slide from his chest to his lap.
“Right, well,” Using the hedgehog’s shoulder, Tails got up on his feet. He then offered his hand to the other, “let’s head back to my workshop. I’ve got work to finish.”
“Does that work include falling asleep on me?” Sonic teased, accepting his brother’s outstretched hand and letting him pull him to his feet. The fox rolled his eyes.
“Only if you slow down.” He said, letting his tails spin and lift him off the ground.
“Hey, I never slow down.” The hedgehog said as he stretched his body. He may be the fastest thing alive, but he still got cramps.
“If that’s what you want to believe.” Tails grinned at his brother.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Sonic raised a brow at the fox, hands on his hips now that he was done stretching.
“Race ya!” The kit winked before flying off, gone before the teen even could even shout back.
Yeah. Definitely a handful.
