silas is like. as an immortal demon the number of years i have seen and masters i have outlived weighs on me until it feels like i am sinking in quicksand, to be buried alive in the inescapable onslaught of time. and worst of all i will live to see the rise of fast fashion

Elisabeth and Nathaniel: *screaming*
Silas: Mistress! What's wrong?!
Nathaniel: WHY ARE YOU ONLY ASKING ELISABETH?! WE'RE BOTH SCREAMING!
Silas: Because the mistress doesn't scream unless it's an emergency. You scream whenever you have the chance.

hi!! just finished sorcery of thorns + thorn manor and wow, what an incredibly whimsical and wonderful journey! i adored the world and the characters, it was such a ride 🌟🫶🏻 🤧
however, i was left with a few questions if you feel comfortable answering! in regards to silas, do you believe that he is really truly capable of loving people even as a demon? or is the point of his character design someone who can only give love conditionally because of the deals he makes with people? did it start out very transactional and through nathaniel and elisabeth he was able to change a bit over time? i just had quite a bit of curiosity, but understand if this isn’t something you’re interested in detailing!
also, do you think that nathaniel and elisabeth would ever have children? i know that’s a big jump LOL but i found myself wondering what their position would be on having a child due to elisabeth essentially growing up parent less in a library and nathaniel’s complex feelings towards being the heir to house thorn/his childhood traumas loosing both his parents. its been keeping me wondering, so i just thought i’d ask!!
thanks again for writing such comforting books — def two of my favorite reads from the year :)
Hi anon,
I'm so happy you enjoyed them, and that they're comfort reads for you. Writing comfort books is my ultimate goal as an author, so that's the highest compliment I can get.
For your second question—Elisabeth and Nathaniel wouldn't have biological children, but they would adopt. Not necessarily in a planned way... more in an "oops, we found this orphan rummaging around in our garbage bins, guess it's ours now" way. You're right about the reasons why they wouldn't want to have biological kids.
For your first question, Silas has been slowly changing for hundreds of years, it's just that taking care of Nathaniel ended up being the tipping point. He's respected and even admired certain humans in the past regardless of whether he had a bargain with them, like Nathaniel's mother Charlotte. Going really far back, you could say his capacity to love owes itself to transactional experiences because without those transactions placing restrictions on his behavior, he never would have gotten to know people, he just would have killed them and eaten their tasty souls. But the bargain itself doesn't play a role in his ability to care.

I am obsessed with the MoTM Silas epilogue. Like. What Was That. He happily thinks about how he created problems on purpose (the main plot of this book!!) to get the two teenagers he takes care of to progress their relationship. Literally a kid making his dolls kiss. He thinks about planning their wedding in the same breath with reminiscing about how he kidnapped tortured and murdered a man!! And then he summons the fucking void garbage disposal to shred a a dress he thinks is ugly. The garbage disposal tells him all the other demons want to kill him and his response is "lol". The most character ever

"It was no use listening to demons, Elisabeth told herself. They were liars. Deceivers. Untrustworthy to the core. Except when they weren't."

The Emperor's Soul is I think my favorite of Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere novellas, largely because I enjoy reading about con artists and thieves. Ones with magic power to rewrite the history of objects? Even better.
Thornhedge is a fun take on Sleeping Beauty that answers the question of why a fairy might have had NEED to put a girl to sleep. And how extremely stressful it would be to then spend hundreds of years dealing with all these knights trying to rescue this princess because apparently there's a story about it (reminds me a bit of how stories have a life of their own in Terry Pratchett's Discworld).
Mysteries of Thorn Manor is an epilogue novella to Sorcery of Thorns that I really enjoyed. A really nice self-contained look into the happily ever after of the characters I love (I mean what's not to love about the warrior librarian of living magical grimoires, a magician who has earned his magic by making a deal with a demon, AND the demon in question (Silas is the best, we love Silas)). Do need to read the preceding book to enjoy the novella though.

Artificial Condition, the second Murderbot novella. I mean I love all the novellas (and one novel) in this series but this one was my favorite. Because ART. I mean a sarcastic, extremely competent SecUnit meeting an equally sarcastic and kinda terrifying Asshole Research Transport? What more can one ask for?
The Secret Life of Bots. Its on the shorter end of the novella spectrum but I adore the little Bot that could. This Bot just gives me the WALL-E feelings, okay?
The Lies of the Ajungo. Okay, so I'm actually currently reading this one but I can already tell it's going to be very good. A story about a boy who goes on a quest to bring water to his city (they're under the thumb of a neighbor city that provides them water... as long as they agree to cut out the tongues of anyone older than thirteen.
It was a twofold price, a price of blood and a price of history: an untongued people cannot tell their story.
