Scully was in the office, catching up on some paperwork while Mulder was at the dentist. He had asked her yesterday, sheepishly, if she could drive him home after his root canal. It was so like Mulder to ask her last minute, but since it was during the workday, she didn’t have any other plans. Scully timed it so she would arrive at the dentist around the time Mulder finished up and was in recovery. He told her he was getting nitrous oxide and might be a little loopy after the procedure.
After she checked in with the receptionist, a cheerful nurse escorted her to Mulder. “Your husband’s been asking for you,” the nurse commented over her shoulder as she led Scully down the hallway.
Scully opened her mouth to correct the nurse, but then thought better of it. Most of the time, her protestations fell on deaf ears. When her and Mulder first started working together, those comments were weird, but now when someone mistook them for a couple, Scully got a little thrill, which usually turned to disappointment pretty quickly. It was what she wanted but knew she couldn’t have, so she just ignored the comments.
Mulder was in the recovery room, reclined in a leather chair, with a dazed look on his face. When he spotted Scully, he gave her a big smile. Well, as big of a smile as he could manage with a mouth full of gauze. Despite herself, Scully could feel her heart skip a beat. She knew it was the drugs, but seeing how happy Mulder looked when she walked in filled her with warmth.
“Scully!” he exclaimed; her name slightly garbled.
She made her way to his side and sat down in the small chair next to him.
“You made it!” he mumbled.
“Well, I said I would be here. It’s time to go home soon," Scully said slowly, like she was speaking to a child.
He stared deep into her eyes, his gaze a thousand yards. “You’re so pretty. You’re the prettiest princess in the castle.”
Scully wrinkled her nose. “Princess, Mulder?” She wasn’t even into princesses as a little girl and certainly not now as an adult.
Mulder appeared deep in thought and then exclaimed, “The most beautiful president America has ever elected!”
Scully had to hold back a laugh. “Yes, that’s better, Mulder, thank you.”
He kept going, “The smartest Supreme Court justice on the bench!”
This time Scully had to turn away so she could hide her laugh as a cough. She patted his shoulder, “Okay, Mulder, that’s enough for today.”
Luckily, at that moment the nurse came in with a wheelchair to take Mulder out to the car. He insisted on holding Scully’s hand during the trip through the hallway. The nurse smiled at them, still thinking they were a married couple.
“I can tell he really loves you,” she said.
Scully’s mouth dropped open, while the nurse kept going, “Some people aren’t that nice when their inhibitions are lowered. But your husband couldn’t stop talking about you and complimenting you. You're a lucky lady," she said with a wink.
A wave of affection swept through Scully. She looked down at Mulder, who seemed ready to fall asleep, and squeezed his hand. Even though his eyes were mostly closed, he still smiled and squeezed her hand back. Oh boy, was Scully in trouble now. She had been in love with him for some time now but seeing him act so sweet and happy towards her was making all her buried feelings rush to the surface in an overwhelming swarm of emotion.
Scully drove Mulder to his apartment and decided to wait around for the nitrous oxide to wear off. Who knew what kind of hijinks he would get up to without her supervision? Plus, she wanted to spend time with him and try to figure him out. In the span of a few minutes, Mulder called her smart and beautiful and whatever else he said to the nurse. Did he really think those things? Could he have feelings for her? She hoped so, because each day it was becoming harder and harder for her to hide her own feelings.
Scully let Mulder doze on his couch for a few hours, while she puttered around his place. When he finally started stirring, she brought him over a glass of water and ibuprofen since the dentist said he might experience some pain after the procedure. Mulder woke up fully and smiled at her, the same way he did earlier that day.
“How are you feeling?” Scully asked.
“Kinda tired,” he answered. “And my mouth hurts a little.”
“There’s some ibuprofen for you,” Scully pointed out and Mulder took the tablets and drank half the glass of water.
“So, I didn't say anything embarrassing earlier, did I?” Mulder asked, setting the cup back on the coffee table.
“Not really,” Scully answered, trying to hide a smile.
Mulder looked skeptical, a rare expression for him. “‘Not really’? What did I say?”
“Just that you thought I should be president. And a Supreme Court justice,” she said with a chuckle.
“Oh, is that all?” Mulder snorted, laying back on the couch. “I think just one of those jobs is more than enough. Not that I don't think you're capable, Scully.”
After a minute, he looked over at her to confirm: “So, nothing else?”
Scully decided to take a chance and said, “Well, you told the nurse that you loved me.”
Mulder shot up like a bullet. “What?!”
Scully doubled over laughing, not trying to hide it this time. “Relax, Mulder. I know it was the drugs.”
He still looked nervous. After a pause, he asked, “What if it wasn’t?’
Scully abruptly stopped laughing. “Wasn’t what?” she asked.
“Wasn’t the drugs,” Mulder responded, finally making eye contact.
“Are you being serious?”
“Well, it shouldn't be that suprising. it’s not the first time I’ve told you that,” he said.
“Yes, but you had a head injury that time,” Scully insisted. "And this time you were under the influence of nitrous oxide."
“It doesn’t mean it’s not true. And it’s a lot more than I’ve gotten from you,” Mulder pointed out. “You’ve never said anything, so I wasn’t sure…” he trailed off, looking apprehensive about what she was going to say.
Mulder was right. It wasn’t fair that she was so good at hiding her feelings that he was afraid to take a risk and tell her how he felt. Though, she thought that she had given him plenty of hints along the way. Scully got up to sit next to Mulder on the couch.
“You’re right,” she said. “I’m not good with words… and expressing things. I’m better at showing them.” Scully turned to Mulder, ready to kiss him and hoping that would convey her feelings.
As soon as she got close, Mulder leapt back. Scully was a little annoyed at the rejection.
“My mouth,” Mulder said, bringing his hand up to cover his face. “I don’t think this is a good time for a first kiss.”
Scully shook her head and laughed. Naturally, they had terrible timing. “Rain check?” she asked, starting to stand up from the couch.
Mulder tugged her back down next to him. “Where are you going? Just because we can’t kiss doesn’t mean there aren’t other things we can do.” He waggled his eyebrows at her.
“Mulder!” she exclaimed, surprised at his forwardness.
He started cracking up at her outrage. “I’m kidding, I’m kidding,” he insisted. “Unless…?”
She shoved him playfully and stood up. “I’m going home. We’ll talk once your mouth is healed,” she said with a smirk.
Mulder flopped back dramatically on the couch. “I don’t think I can wait that long.”
And he didn't have to - she came back later that night.

thoughts while rewatching triangle:
mulder is straight bonkers for just sailing the bermuda triangle looking for a ghost ship.
scully's queen anne counterpart is dancing with an older man, no surprise there lol.
scully running around the fbi unhinged, trying to save mulder's ass, is my favorite thing ever. the people in the hallways and elevators all look like they've seen this many times before.
never thought scully had sexual tension with skinner or spender, but i kinda felt it in this ep! (weird to say)
the continuous takes are just so cool.
"because you're the only one who can save this ship" - yeah she is!
mulder and scully running through the hallways holding hands, my beloved.
scully waited a long time before hitting mulder during that kiss. don't blame her though!
skinner just throwing the flowers on the side table lmao.
"but you believed me" -- love the parallel to folie a deux. i feel like i could write an essay on this - scully is the skeptic, but she believes in mulder in any timeline.

After rewatching Squeeze, I realized that there was more to this moment than just Scully's decidedly not professional arm grab that you would totally do to your coworker of about a month. While observing Tooms, Mulder is “waxing paranoiac,” (lol) saying that bars on windows and security systems won’t stop people like Tooms. Even though they caught the bad guy, it sounds like he might lose sleep over these thoughts.
That is, until Scully touches his arm and doesn’t let go (you can see in the second shot that she’s still slightly holding onto him) and Mulder immediately stops. He just looks down at her and it's obvious that her touch relaxes him. After just a second, he’s calm enough to leave Tooms and walk away.
It's only their third case together and already Scully is able to ground him and ease his racing thoughts. They know each other so well even at this early point, it's no wonder Scully wanted to stay on the X-Files to explore this relationship and dynamic more.

thoughts while rewatching the pilot:
(happy 30th bday x-files 👽🛸)
scully is smiling and being adorable walking through the hoover building. guys, she is so happy about this new assigment.
i think it's so cute that both of them know each other beforehand - scully knows "spooky mulder" who caught monty props and mulder has read her senior thesis. they haven't even met and they're already obsessed with one another.
scully is literally smiling the whole time sparring with mulder in the basement. she was definitely unfulfilled teaching at the academy and has finally found someone just as smart as she is!
mulder is trying to be a jackass but not really succeeding bc he's so enamored by his new partner.
those plane seats look so big and comfy. what happened in the last 30 years?
scullys says "i don’t know, i’ve never had the pleasure" when mulder asks if she's ever exhumed a body. i think she may be speaking literally...(she's a weirdo at heart)
at the cemetery, mulder and scully are SO snarky to dr. nemmins - "we're not insinating anything sir" and "guy obviously needed a longer vacation" -- they are already best friends excluding the other kids at recess.
i've seen the pilot a bunch of times and finally got the steven spielberg joke (it's a reference to ET). i'm dumb ok.
it's been said before, but this pilot is so good. i recently watched the first episode of another procedural and it was pretty lackluster, especially compared to the x files. mulder and scully are interesing characters on their own, their chemistry is outstanding right off the bat, and the storyline of the episode is engaging.
i love how many great scenes we get between mulder and scully -- their initial meeting, the mosquito bite/motel scene, the cemetery rain scene. all of them develop the characters and their relationship in creative ways. we learn about mulder's sister and his mission and we see scully become invested in the x files even during their first case.
seeing my precious baby agents always makes me happy, especially when they are innocent in s1 so the pilot is always an enjoyable rewatch.
while i haven't been a fan for 30 years, i can definitely see myself enjoying this show for the next 30. it's timeless and i'm so so excited to see new fans enjoying my favorite tv show.

Is 'Will They or Won't They' about David and Gillian?
I finally got around to reading Will They or Won't They by Ava Wilder, which is a novel about two Hollywood actors (Lilah and Shane) that star in a hit TV show in which their characters are a fan-favorite ship, but the actors famously hate each other. The author is annoyingly coy about who the book is about (if anyone) and in The X-Files fandom, fans have speculated that it's about David and Gillian. So what did I think? (mild spoilers below)
Yes, the book is definitely about Gillovny!
The show Lilah and Shane star in (Intangible) is filmed in Vancouver and is extremely popular. It's also a paranormal show: "Walt's main innovation had been to bring in every mythological creature under the sun, as well as open the show up to the world of larger supernatural conspiracies (government or otherwise)." (pg 34)
Lilah, like Gillian, has short, chin-length red hair.
Shane is described as "beautiful" with "long legs, long lashes, dark hair that fell over his forehead without reaching his eyes. Not just beautiful, but attractive, too." (pg 4)
Lilah and Shane meet before their audition, in a room with all the other candidates. They chat while waiting and then are both hired due to their intense chemistry with each other, which is pretty much how The X-Files audition went.
Both actors are unknowns when they are hired and the show propels them to mega-stardom: "He was the only person who understood what she was going through, because he was going through it, too: the surreal, thrilling, terrifying, one-in-a-million experience of going from nobody to capital-S Somebody practically overnight." (pg 80) This sounds a lot like how David and Gillian describe their relationship.
They famously do not get along on set, meanwhile their on-screen chemistry is ever-present and their characters' slow-burn romance is what hooks the fans: "No matter how the two of them felt about each other when the cameras were off, it was the chemistry between their characters, Kate and Harrison, that made the show worth watching." (pg 16)
The showrunner suggests that Lilah and Shane go to couples counseling, which Chris Carter recommended to David and Gillian.
Lilah and Shane participate in a photoshoot that sounds just like the Rolling Stone shoot, in which they are in bed in minimal clothing, while the photographer takes pictures from above.
Lilah and Shane's characters are known for gazing at each other: "...staring longingly at each other when they thought the other one wasn't looking." (pg 19)
No, it's probably about some other couple or no couple at all.
There's no height difference between the two. In fact, it's specifically stated that Lilah and Shane are almost the same height (and Lilah is taller if she wears heels).
Shane was not interested in being an actor, but was scouted and encouraged to audition for the role of Harrison. He had zero acting experience before the show.
The book opens with Lilah returning to Intangible after leaving the show for four seasons. Which I guess is similar to The X-Files but is a much larger gap than David's absence.
Most of the similarities between this book and The X-Files occur in the first half. Once past that point, the characters are pretty fleshed out and don't seem like they are necessarily based on anyone in particular.
Parting thoughts:
There are so many similarities between Lilah/Shane and David/Gillian and their experience on The X-Files that it almost feels like it has to be about them. I've seen speculation that it's about Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev on The Vampire Diaries, which is also a possibility.
Whether or not it was about David and Gillian, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it if you're into romance novels.

I like The X-Files, should I watch Fringe?
I decided to watch Fringe because it was frequently recommended as a show for fans of TXF. I was really curious how similar it would be and would I actually enjoy it? I'm only on S2 E5, so this post will be my impressions of the first season. I'll probably write another post after watching more of the show. I'll also try to make this as spoiler free as possible so anyone can read it!
What is Fringe about? The main character is FBI Special Agent Olivia Dunham. We meet her when she's assigned to a case in which everyone on board a plane dies from a mysterious illness. The plane lands successfully at Boston Logan (due to some auto-landing feature - not sure if this is even real) and this is where we find out that Boston (aka Vancouver) is our setting for the show. Dunham traces the mysterious illness back to the research of a former Harvard professor (Dr. Walter Bishop), who is currently in a psychiatric institution, and she needs his son (Peter Bishop) to get him out. By the end of the episode, the three of them form the core of the Fringe division, a cohort of agents and consultants working on unexplained cases (sound familiar??).
How are Fringe and TXF similar?
Both shows center on a special division within the FBI that involve unexplained phenonomen.
Both are filmed in Vancouver.
Both feature monster of the week and mythology episodes.
Both have a strong female lead.
Both have the potential for romance between the two leads (Olivia and Peter).
How are the two shows different?
Fringe features an ensemble cast, whereas TXF was really only Mulder and Scully. I enjoy the relationships between the characters (like Peter and his father, and Walter and Astrid), but the show hasn't done a great job of fleshing out characters aside from the core three. Poor Astrid has pretty much no personality aside from performing lab work with Walter.
The show does not have the same atmosphere as TXF seasons 1-5, even though they're both filmed in the same locale. It might be because of film vs. digital, but the cinematography on Fringe is lacking compared to the beautiful forests we're used to seeing on TXF.
Fringe does a great job of tying a majority of their monster of the week episodes back to the main mythology. The problem with this is that it's hard to watch these episodes independently as they don't have a truly self-contained story.
The mythology storyline is well-developed and I heard that there's actually a plan for the plot (unlike TXF).
Fringe is sci-fi. There are no paranormal, supernatural, or horror elements.
Other impressions:
It took me about halfway through season 1 to start getting into the show, and it seems like that might be some others' experience (and why they may have stopped).
I find it hard to follow the cases sometimes, because they involve technology that is extremely advanced or currently doesn't exist at all, and it seems like the writers don't really understand it either.
I have a feeling we'll be seeing a romantic relationship between Olivia and Peter at some point and I think the show is doing a good job of slowly developing their bond. I've also heard that Anna Torv and Joshua Jackson did not get along on set (sound familiar??) but they have decent chemistry - not as good as David and Gillian but as we all know, there's not a fair comparison.
There's random things that rub me the wrong way, like Walter performing autopsies (someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think he's an MD, just has several PhDs), how every single case relates back to Walter's research (this man is like 10 Einsteins because he was conducting experiments in every field and all of it beyond the realm of known science), Walter touching dead bodies at crime scenes without gloves (I know this happens in TXF but it's so egregious in Fringe). Despite all this, I do like Walter's character and I think John Noble gives an excellent performance.
Olivia Dunham is a well-rounded character and Anna Torv is great. I really enjoy the relationship she has with her sister and niece.
So far, I enjoy the mythology episodes more than the monster of the week, which is the opposite of my opinion for TXF.
It's funny that there are 15 years between the premiere of TXF (1993) and Fringe (2008) and about another 15 years to present day (2024). But Fringe seems so modern compared to TXF. You can barely tell it's 15 years old, except for the lack of iPhones and I'm sure even that will change in the next few seasons.
Should I watch it??
If you really enjoy sci-fi, I would say definitely check it out. If you're on the fence, or don't like sci-fi at all, I would skip this one.
It probably sounds like I don't enjoy Fringe based on my above points. I think part of it is that I am comparing it to TXF, even while watching, and TXF is definitely better (imo). I also enjoy horror more than sci fi. But, Fringe is holding my interest for now and I've heard that it improves throughout the seasons, so I'm going to keep watching.
I'll definitely write an update post at some point - if I finish the show or stop watching it.
I'm so curious to hear the thoughts of others who have watched Fringe! Do you agree with my assessments so far? What are your opinions and how does it compare to The X-Files for you?

thoughts while rewatching squeeze:
this episode has been analyzed a lot (for good reason), so i'm going to try to come up with some unique insights & observations.
the first question: why is scully friends with colton? he's clearly only asking her to lunch to see if mulder can help out with his case. but they do gossip a little about their classmates so they're definitely friendly. maybe he wasn't as insufferable in the academy?
scully calls mulder "a great agent." only two cases in and she has a very high opinion of him!
mulder wearing glasses <3 they both look so good in this ep. scully's brown suit is iconic and mulder is having a good hair day (or really, the entire case).
mulder gets territorial with the case, claiming that "we had it first" because the x-file dates back to 1903. they're already a team, no outsiders allowed.
scully's look when mulder says "you're down here too" lmaooo
scully does not laugh or even seem amused when the VCU is making jokes at mulder's expense. she's already very loyal.
smart scully in action - her profile was correct!
i love the look of the parking garage. those cut out circles in the walls are a cool visual.
mulder saying that he doesn't mind saying outlandish things if he gets to mess with people's heads. i love this man.
the way mulder smiles when scully decides to stick with the x-files instead of colton.
the old detective is awesome (he kept the liver as a souvenir?!). he clearly should be an x-files consultant.
mulder & scully entering tooms's apt with the flashlights - ICONIC
scully calls mulder to complain about colton: "we should file a complaint." like i said, they're already a team!
i already talked about the arm touch here, but i just love how her touch calms him down.
can't believe this if the first case file of the series; it's so well-done right off the bat. and we get a fan favorite mutant early in s1. this is definitely a favorite of mine!

does anyone else think that chris carter decided to have scully get pregnant at the end of season 7 because he knew it would be such a good cliffhanger for the finale? and he didn’t give a second thought that he was actually going to have to follow through with that storyline. and he’s so short-sighted that he did it AGAIN for season 11. like no lesson learned at all, love that for us 👍
