Being the co-leaders of both your lands of Berk and Doon was no small task. It always felt like every second of every day there was some small or big problem for both you and your wife, Chieftess Hicca to solve or deal with. There was always some complaint, always some thing set ablaze that needed to be put out. Luckily, you and Hicca both had each other and your steads, Toothless and Snowstorm.
But then there was a whole other problem to deal with. The councils of both Berk and Doon were constantly stressing to you and Hicca the importance of having an heir to your combined kingdom. It was like both councils had a timetable for the two of you.
“Our lands need an heir,” one of the councilmen spoke up, “for the continued existence of our kingdom”
“I can’t just push an heir out,” Hicca exclaimed a little agitated.
“Dear councilmen,” you gently take Hicca’s hand, “what my wife is trying to say is that we need you all to get off our backs!”
The councils looked at you rather shocked. Normally you were the levelheaded, calm spoken of the two of you, but these requests were just too much. “The problems of both islands never appear to pause and it’s very difficult to…to…” you tried to articulate but the words never came.
Hicca only looked at you and blushed. The slight red to her face made her look all the more beautiful in your eyes.
“Either the councils help us to reduce the amount of problems we take care of daily or you allow time and nature to come naturally.” Hicca issued as an ultimatum before walking away with you in tow. “The Chiefs have spoken.”
You and Hicca took a walk around Doon, your home kingdom. The two of you saw Toothless and Snowstorm playing with their own night fury babies. The two dragons nuzzles one another as they gazed on with pride at their hatchlings.
Hicca leaned her head against your shoulder. “I want a baby,” she whined a little, “but I want it to be on our terms.”
“It’s our kid,” you gave her a kiss on the forehead, “and we’d have to carve out time, before, during, and after said pregnancy. And they won't even give us that.”
“The wonders of being a chief, huh?” Your wife gives a sarcastic comment, her shoulders moving from side to side, one of the little quirks you loved about her.
“It’ll happen when we want it to,” you conclude, hugging her tight.
Hicca giggles, “exactly when we want it to.” What you didn’t notice was the wheels already turning her head. A plan was already forming for the young chieftess.
And then came the different shouts of people. One calling for Hicca’s attention and the others calling for yours.
The next day was more of the same. The only difference was that Hicca was nowhere to be found. She got up before you did and disappeared. You didn't think much of it since Toothless was gone too.
"Where's your mate, Snowstorm?" you asked your faithful light fury. She simply gave a little chirping coo and went to go take care of the hatchlings.
You got into a nice routine that morning as you helped the people of Doon. And when it was close to high noon, a shadow past over you.
Hicca and Toothless swept down and landed before you. Hicca had a look of joy and elation as she ran to you, "Y/n! I found a new species of dragon!"
"Really? Where?"
"Northern mountains. It's like a migration pattern or something" Hicca tried to explain, "Get on Snowstorm and follow me!"
You boarded your white light fury and chased after Hicca to the northern mountainous area of your home island. You had explored it numerous times, you never once encountered a new species of dragon in that area.
Hicca and Toothless landed at a little outpost point on the mountain. You landed a split second later. Peace and quiet as far as the eye could see. You noticed that Hicca had set up a comfortable tent and firepit around the point.
Toothless and Snowstorm looked to one another and took off. You were utterly confused. "Don't worry about them" Hicca giggles as she brings up a backpack of supplies. "They'll be back in the morning. We got enough to last us a few days"
"But the village-"
"They won't disturb us if they think we're cataloguing a new species of dragon" your wife gives you a little mischievous wink.
"You little sneak" you smile at your bride.
"I finally have you all to myself" she whispers back. Hicca sits down on the ground and pats the spot next to her. You gladly join her on the ground and she leans against your shoulder. Hicca just breathes in your scent, you wrap an arm around her.
"I need you" she whispers and nuzzles you. "It's like I can't get one moment of privacy with my own husband. I almost forgot your scent."
"I missed moments like this" you admit as you gently rub circles into her back. You kiss the top of her head. You missed moments like this, where the world could spin and you wouldn't have to constantly rush from place to place.
You missed just being able to enjoy one another's company. To share little inside jokes and talk for hours on end without needing to worry about someone's problem with a dragon or someone's lost sheep.
You and Hicca spend the rest of the day just being a couple. Laughing, talking, planning out the kind of future you both wished for any children of yours to have. You were often so tired after the island's problems that you would just walk in to your home and collapse on the bed. There wasn't any sense of intimacy or communication on those days. Now it felt like those bonds were finally being rebuilt.
The day faded into night. You and Hicca cuddled under a warm fur as the fire pit roared, illuminating the mountain point that was your sanctuary. Hicca laid her head comfortably against your chest.
You found her gazing up, staring directly into your eyes. A little content smile on her lips. Her emerald eyes stare into yours, you could spend a lifetime just looking into her soul.
"What?" you asked gently matching her smile.
"Do you want to make love?" she asks shyly.
"Do you?" you ask back a little happy. She simply bit her lip and nodded. Some excited giggles escaped her lip. You pulled her close and kissed her once, twice, and then you picked her up bridal style and carried your bride into the cozy tent that Hicca had set up.
Needless to say, Hicca had found a clever excuse to escape the mundane chaos that was being a chief.
The villagers of both Berk and Doon never questioned the sudden emergence of apparent new dragon species. All they knew was that you and her went off nearly every other day from then on. Although they did find it odd that you and her never came back with examples of these species.
You both just came back with euphoric smiles and giggling at little hidden jokes.

Helii post night fury headcannons. Do this do this do this
ok ok ok ok ok so ok so. this is long im sorry
lets get basics out of the way b4 i move onto stupid brainchild stuff. night furies are highly adapted to be nocturnal and thus are very vulnerable during the day considering their lack of heavy plated scales and their dark coloration. annd we know they at least live north enough for berk (which is apparently somewhere in the norwegian sea) . so my brain tells me in order to be Least vulnerable, night furies are native to the arctic circle (or antarctic if ur a light fury) where day/night cycles are in periods of 6-ish months.
theyre kinda a mix of snow leopards and peregrine falcons in my head and eat the same stuff (wild goats or sheep, reindeer, birds, rodents) and ofc fish But are capable of being omnivorous and arent at all picky. theyre highly solitary; each one has a huge territory they use as "home base" and occasionally fly out of to hunt (sometimes flocks of night furies will gather in one location to follow migrating prey species but this usually leads to conflict). theyll generally live in and defend the boundaries of their territory for their entire life once its chosen, especially once the 6-month daytime rolls around and they need a secure area.
BUT. juveniles, bc theyre not strong/experienced enough to defend or contest territories, tend to be annually migratory and move south once the sun rises in march. night fury kit markings are super bright and once theyve faded into a dark grey color (~10 human years) theyre generally old enough to go back and contest for a territory then defend it well (toothless got caught by the red death doing this)
bc i consider most of the dragon species in httyd sapient i like to explain this instinctual behavior by giving night furies their own sort of mythology which is a Whole thing so like buckle in (its under the cut)
night furies dont have a Religion but they have myths based on figures. they have 2 main ones—the Great Mother and the Blue Queen, which respectively represent nighttime and daytime as concepts
the story is basically: night furies used to be able to call down skyfire (or lightning). the Blue Queen, jealous because she had no fire, began to use her authority to demand all the night furies hand over their skyfire, and consumed it for herself. the Great Mother was the only night fury which was brave enough to disobey and discovered a way to hide the skyfire within their bodies so they could pretend to not have any. when the Blue Queen found out about her trick, they started an endless battle. this ofc is the day/night cycle, where the occasionally red coloration of dawn/dusk is their blood. the idea is that the Great Mother shelters all of the night furies with her giant wings to hide them from the Blue Queens eye (the sun). the stars are holes in her wings that came from subsequent battles and are heavily used to navigate like humans do. northern night furies call polaris the Pierced Point and its considered the first star, where the Blue Queen drew first blood by striking the Great Mother in her fire cavity, which is why its the brightest star. a bunch of different stars and constellations have their own stories (the names are usually unified, though sometimes the content of the stories differ based on region. they all convey some type of lesson or explanation for an instinct)
night fury parents often explain to their kits, once they leave the nest, that they have to migrate because the Blue Queen will stop them from growing their fire if they stay up north, and by following the Great Mother south where their fight is more tumultuous (bc the day/night cycle is more regular), theyre helping her by learning to fend for themselves without a territory so she can focus on the battle with the Blue Queen. its like telling your kid santa is real, its a kinder way to get them to gtfo so they wont die trying to fuck with older night furies. some kits grow out of this belief entirely and others consider it kind of a pilgrimage. depends on the family
this is why night furies are so resistant to reliance and hierarchy: the antagonistic figure in their myths is a Queen who abuses her power and the right way to honor their protective figure is by learning to be independent. culturally night furies kind of have this complex abt them where vulnerability of any kind is Really emotionally intimate (which is why i hc that meeting and choosing mates can take for-fucking-ever. night furies prefer monogamy bc its less people to be vulnerable with, but theyre also picky because this is a huuuge thing for them).
u can kinda imagine how weird toothless is by general night fury standards then bc he willingly flies during the sun and chooses to be interdependent with hiccup. he had a whole crisis abt it in the first movie and before he really accepted loving hiccup he rationalized the position he was in by saying that the Great Mother was putting him on trial for hurting her somehow. obv by the end of the movie he doesnt think that anymore but for a little bit there he was like "oh god im the main character in a constellation story"
anyway yeah these r all my thoughts ^-^ hi oracle ily

The time I met the nicest snapping turtle and the most furious softshell turtle. I was a child. I was forced to go visit some far-removed extended “family,” the kind of passive-aggressive and authoritarian people who took in a distant cousin for a weekend and treated you like an obnoxious dog or something, people who I was only slightly familiar with, which made me uncomfortable. “Family” not being something that I ever consistently had access to, “family” not a concept I was (or am, honestly) used to, “family” being something I only knew less of as time passed. They had a job which they were contracted to do that day. They brought me to a decaying industrial site in northern Appalachia, a paragon of Rust Belt gothic, to clean out the junk from a riverside lot that was scheduled to be redeveloped. My impression:
It felt like that stereotypical scene of pulp Americana, where a middle-aged man sits in a construction job-site trailer, flies buzzing, an old outdated fan from the 1970s unhelpfully churning warm air, and he, face half-obscured in shadow, hires a bunch of 19-year-olds to go to a post-industrial site to “take care of things.” Despite it still being morning, everyone is sweating, nobody is happy. A developer, dealing under the table in cash only, who despite owning several private properties is somehow always on the verge of bankruptcies and calls you from a landline after midnight on Tuesday night to offer you $150 to spend the next morning chugging gas station coffee before clandestinely salvaging some rusted metal from an overgrown property he may or may not actually own.
You wouldn’t know how far you were from Morgantown, Pittsburgh, or Zanesville because of the nature of the hills, hills everywhere, always obscuring the horizon, and the density of western Appalachian slopes’ deep green foilage drunk on late spring rain. I was the youngest person present, like a fragile goofy dainty pre-teen stowaway, barely tolerated on their Gruff-and-Serious Mission to tromp through the stagnating mud to reclaim bent rusted metal in the oppressive humidity. Pungent vernal pools. Too many toads and frogs to count. And in the flooded oxbows, and where the rain puddles collected in gravel, there were two turtles, and both of them were tiny little babies that could fit in the palm of your hand. One was a snapping turtle, the other a spiny softshell.
I almost saw this as a spiritual experience, because: (1) I actually lived far away, nowhere near this kind of humidity, where there were much fewer reptiles and amphibians, in a region at the extreme range limits of both of these turtles, where these turtles were rare. Acres and acres of degraded cattle rangeland or barley monoculture. Not very friendly to streams. There was also yucca-covered badlands, shortgrass prairie, sagebrush steppe. Friendlier to reptiles generally, but not generous in providing streams for the turtles. However, if circumstances aligned, and you paid attention to the humidity and the insects and the goings-on of the prairie, you might be lucky enough to sometimes see a snapping turtle or spiny softshell in little stock ponds and vernal pools in the “wide-open” prairie. They were like harbingers of ... something special, I guess.
And it was also a “spiritual” experience because (2) they were my two favorite North American turtles, at least at that time, partially because they both had interesting distribution ranges on the edge of their range, and I often went out looking but could rarely find them, so the auspiciousness of seeing both species together was cool.
And both turtles are so unique. The snapping turtle is like a dragon or dinosaur, full of personality and charisma. The serrated shell, the rough skin, the mass of muscle escaping bursting out and escaping the shell’s confines, the long dragon-like, almost-horned tail. And spiny softshells are almost alien. The dramatically long neck, the unique flat pancake shell, the leathery soft texture of the shell, they’re highly aquatic even for a turtle, etc. Softshells can sit at the bottom of a river, and extend their neck up to the water’s surface, so that they can breath, like a submarine’s periscope. And they’re very skittish, very fast when you encounter them and they retreat, just a blur, like an apparition.
So these, like, dudes in their twenties, seeing me watch the turtles, they all wanted to either (1) take the turtles home as “pets,” or (2) kill and eat them. (!!! But don’t worry, everything was fine, I eventually convinced them to save the turtles, to re-release at the river nearby.) But for a while, these people placed both turtles together, each in a pail with some water, the pails side by side.
You know how snapping turtles have a reputation for being fiery, grumpy, dangerous to handle?
This little snapping turtle was - to this day, still - the most passive and pleasant turtle I’ve ever encountered. Just completely calm and charming. I swear she was smiling. The dudes “babysitting” me were insisting on handling the snapping turtle to demonstrate their fearlessness or some other bullshit. I don’t like handling reptiles and amphibians unless its necessary for their own safety (remove them from the road or residential yard, transplant amphibians from a dangerously drying vernal pool, transplant a rattlesnake to somewhere it won’t be killed, etc.). But this time, to keep these dudes from harassing the snapping turtle, I was the one who would take it, and place it back into the wet pail after each of these guys had Proved Their Courage or whatever. This snapping turtle, not once did it appear agitated or aggressive. Nervous and uncomfortable with the harassment? Yes, but not a violent turtle.
But the softshell? Violent turtle. In the best way. The two turtles were polar opposites.
To this day, that was the angriest turtle I ever met. Hissing, clawing, wriggling, biting. I was 110% vibing with this softshell, because I shared its righteous fury. This turtle didn’t want to be harassed by these guys, treated like garbage. I myself was not enjoying being teased and harassed by these guys. They had spent their down-time that day fishing for and arbitrarily/sadistically killing carp and catfish to toss to the crows.
The softshell, the snapper, and I, all hostages.
To this day, I still love these two “alien” turtle species.
The turtles ended up being transplanted somewhere safer. So did I, when I returned “home.” The turtles lived. So did I, I guess.

I’ve been itching to draw more Night Furies and decided it was high time to finally create my own motley little band of the motherfuckers. Names, personalities, and stories pending, but I hope to flesh them out more in the near future! Additional lore and notes beneath the cut.
My current inkling of a lore idea is that they’re a tightly-knit migratory band (called a ‘coven’ in my personal Northern* Night Fury lore) who stumble across Hiccup at some point and he gives them all stupid names. Individual 3 is supposed to be Toothless’s long-lost brother. Current name concepts are Toothache for Individual 3 and Faceless for Individual 7, but I’m open to suggestions, and gods know what I’m going to name the rest of them.
Story-wise, the only note I’ve got is that 7 earned most of her scars defending her brother 1 sometime in the semi-recent past. Oh, and 1 and 3 are mates. Yes, they’re both male. The dragons can have a little gay, as a treat. 2 has a color mutation akin to fibromelanosis, where his body over-produces dark pigments both internally and externally - his inner tissues are all a bruised shade of purple-black, as well as his scales! This is why he has such an unusual purple tint, as opposed to the blue-brown-blacks of standard Northerns.
A part of my personal Night Fury lore: females are, on average, notably larger than the males. Toothless is a currently little on the small side for a male - he still has a bit more growing to do. Age usually partially dictates size, but as 7 shows, some dragons are just big for no good reason at all. Night Furies never really stop growing, but it does slow down significantly after a certain age (somewhere in the 20-30 range), so dragons any bigger than 7 are of a truly venerable age. And, of course, an ancient male will be nowhere near as large as an ancient female. 5 is definitely getting into Opulent Old Lady territory, though Northerns can easily live twice as long as her, if not more, so she’s not a good example of what the far end of the size spectrum looks like.
*So named in order to distinguish them from my Southern Night Fury fanon species. My name for ‘canon’ Night Furies, essentially. Not to be confused with other fanon breeds called Northern Night Furies!

Heres a long text about how to train your dragon 3 so theres probably some spoilers I dunno?
So the night fury is black and sleek because it needs to blend in well with the night sky. The light fury is SUPPOSEDLY white because that's what the scales naturally look like before being heated up by the camouflage blast, but then we find out that the night fury can camouflage itself in the same way so there's literally no reason why the light fury is white. Here's my theory/headcanon I guess?
The light fury is white and glittery to camouflage itself in the snow. This means it comes from a place where there's snow for a majority of the year. Possibly if dragons work similarly to humans, the lighter scales also allow the dragon to take in more vitamin D. Either the light fury comes from a place that has snow and ice all year around (f.ex north pole) or it comes from a place that has snow for most of the year but that isn't quite as northern, due to the time of the sun setting. You see, in the north the sun sets really early in the winter. I'd say the light fury probably doesn't come from a place where the majority of the winter is pitch black, but it could be that it is an ancient type of dragon meaning that even though it wasn't pitch black during winter, it was still cold enough to keep the snow around for longer (think ice age ancient). The smaller size, and sleeker shape of the light fury might be due to the fact that it hunts closer to ground (in the snow). So if we assume that this is an ancient species, this means that as summers very slowly became warmer, the light fury slowly evolved this new type of camouflage that allowed it to hunt even when there was no snow. It may also have evolved like this to be able to camouflage itself in more grey-ish skies, as northern winters often have grey snow clouds filling the whole sky. Their scales have evolved to camouflage in snow and snow is very reflective (if the sky is blue during winter, your shadow will appear to be blue as the snow reflects the light coming from the sky instead of the light coming from the sun) so I think this is totally plausible, that they already had a reflective ability and that it evolved and became something more drastic.
This leads me to the night fury. Here's how the movie says it is: This old dude around hiccups dads age managed to kill ALL night furies except one. But it doesn't really make sense. Stoic (hiccups dad) was born into this dragon-fighting culture, most likely, right? And so was that villain whatever his name was. They used to hunt dragons together. But that means that someone must've made a manual on dragons. Night furies must have been a common dragon, otherwise: why would villain-guy choose to kill all night furies? If there were only 150 night furies in the world, why not choose to kill all 1500 of some more common species to show that you're strong? How would killing all night furies make him seem all dangerous when there aren't that many of them to kill? Or why not make all wilderbeests or whatever they're called go extinct? Now, the movies try to convince us that night furies are more scary or powerful than other dragons, but all evidence points to them being just a normal type of dragon, maybe their blast is a smidge more powerful in general because it shoots out of their mouth quicker than fire or lava does, but I wouldn't say they're like overpowered. The scariest part would be that they're practically invisible in the night sky, so you can't see them coming. So the night fury is a normal type of dragon that has a normal number of individuals to the species, and this villain-guy has a personal issue with them causing him to want to kill all of them. This maks sense until you realize, how would this person be able to kill all of these dragons before someone could write down some facts about them? I don't think he did it all during his first 10 years of life, it feels more natural if he hunted them for a good while. Am I supposed to believe that Stoic, who was friends with villain-guy and appearently a very skilled dragon hunter, didn't have access to the best possible books on how to fight dragons? Why does the book of dragons from the first movie have a page on night furies, with no description and no illustration if there was this well known guy killing hundreds or thousands of night furies like what max 40 years ago? So why aren't night furies in the book??? It doesn't make sense. Here's the thing. In the movie, this line is uttered (or something like it): "They can't go north, because night furies aren't cold resistant". This struck me as weird, because berk is supposed to be pretty high up north, as the movies decide to call them vikings (for no reason) I'd say they need to be at least like as nordic as southern norway. But as the "edge of the world" seems to be pretty damn close to Berk (or new berk), I'd say berk is pretty far north, away from civilization.
So why are night furies so rare that they aren't in any books that Berk has access to? Why is toothless the only one seen? Because night furies are a more southern type of dragon! Since night furies aren't made for the cold, they don't travel to Berk or the neighbouring islands, meaning the information on night furies is very limited even in the best books. Night furies black scales would not camouflage them in the northern summer because the sun barely sets, and while they would be amazing during the endlessly dark winters, once it starts getting darker it also gets colder.
But this also means that, as I mentioned earlier when talking about the light furies evolution, as the climate changes and becomes warmer this allows night furies to travel north. Once they can actually stand the climate, the darkness would be unchanged and very welcoming to these dragons. It is also possible that the dark colour could help them stay warm by sunbasking. As it turns out, a lot of the night furies natural abilities fit extremely well in a northern climate as long as you remove the extreme cold.
So were night furies an invasive species, and was villain-guy trying to keep them away with good intentions?
In any case I think this also explains why the light fury isn't seen a lot in the movies, because they prefer colder weather, but they're absolutely more suited to all weathers than the night fury is which probably means they exist in more numbers and variations than the night fury. Also I don't think villain-guy killed all night furies, but I think it's possible that he killed most of the ones who had migrated north

Thoughts of the Droid: How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019)
Hello, people of Tumblr! How has life treated you? As always, I hope very well. On this occasion, I share with all of you my impressions and opinions of the movie "How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World".
Being honest with you, this movie was not on my list of the most anticipated of this year. However, I went to see the movie, together with a family member who wanted to see it. I'm certainly glad I gave it a try since the movie was a rewarding experience.
WARNING: NOT SPOILER-FREE. Read at you own risk
And it is not for less since the franchise of "How To Train Your Dragon" has been one of the most solid proposals, not only of the animation company DreamWorks but also within the art of cinematographic animation. It has managed to maintain its standard of quality in high, in addition to extracting juice to the franchise without over-exploiting it.
Entering already full to the review, what did I think the movie? Short answer: simply great. Now let's go into detail to analyze the movie properly.
Characters: Without a doubt, the strongest aspect of this film (and the franchise in general). Hiccup and his friends Astrid, Snotloud, Fishlegs, Ruffnut, and Tuffnut, are still those very endearing characters that we met in the first film of the franchise. And although they are now young adults, their designs are still very identifiable. In addition, the chemistry that all the characters have is wonderful, being a relationship that goes beyond friendship, is a relationship in which everyone is part of a large family, which despite their personalities and attitudes so disparate, they can trust each other, work shoulder to shoulder and cover each other's backs, something often seen, but very rarely carried effectively as only this film knows how to do.
I especially emphasize the character of Hiccup, since he has matured to become a great leader for his village. He still has his characteristic awkwardness and innocence, but he has proved to be a man with all his letters. Without a doubt, I was fascinated by the balance that was given to the character, between being a great leader, but at the same time still young and therefore a bit inexperienced in such a huge responsibility. Fortunately for him, he will always have his great friends and his mother to encourage him to keep going. I also liked the message they give with Hiccup: He is a great leader, but even great leaders need support from their friends to face fate. That is to say, that not everything has to be solved alone. It is always good to listen to the opinions of those you direct in order to arrive at a satisfactory solution.
Something that I loved about this movie was the relationship of  Hiccup with Astrid, Hiccup with his mother, Valka, and of course, Hiccup's relationship with his faithful dragon companion, Toothless. In the first relationship, you really feel romantic chemistry between the two, plus it has the plus that said romance does not feel cheesy or too pink. The two love each other and practically both of them play their part so that this relationship continues to work. And despite the fact that several times they can not agree with the other's decisions, they are there to support each other. Practically Astrid not only fulfills its romantic role, but it is also the right arm of Hiccup to help him rule as a true leader. Without a doubt, Astrid's brazenness is quite fun to watch, serving not only as comic relief (that effectively works) but also as a way to help Hiccup, in her very particular way.
For its part, the relationship of  Hiccup with Valka feels like an authentic relationship of Mother - son. Valka is there for her son, to help him and advise him in his new role as village leader. However, Valka also understands that her son is now an adult, a man already trained and mature, which gives him his space and independence. You could say that Valka lets Hiccup open its wings and it flies away from its nest to find its own way in life. Here I will use to emphasize the flashbacks of Hiccup with his father Stoic the Great. These flashbacks are full of tenderness and emotion, showing a great and beautiful relationship between father and son. Stoic, being a warrior, he also had his sensitive side and never feared to show his love for his son in that open way. Of course, I could not leave out the friendship relationship between Hiccup and his dragon Toothless.
This relationship goes beyond an owner with his pet. It is a relationship of true friends, where despite being of such different species, both were treated as equals and had immense affection for each other. Despite being of such different species, having different customs, different needs and even coming from different worlds, even with all that, they were the best friends. Something to highlight, was the inclusion of the Light Fury, is a perfect complement to Toothless. The scenes of these two dragons are quite fun to watch, especially the courtship dance, whose comedy is pure gold.
To finish this point, I can not stop mentioning the villain of this installment: Grimmel. In truth, he is a very good villain. Maybe it is not at the level of other exceptional villains (such as Frollo from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame"), but it is a pretty successful villain for this third installment. Cold, calculating, ruthless and above all, charismatic. A villain who from the beginning is presented as the bad guy, without having to resort to a twist of unnecessary plot and nothing surprising, as Disney has done in recent years. Here I would like to highlight something that I found interesting: Grimmel tells you a part of his past, where he claims to have captured and killed a Night Fury. It is here where a conflict of very interesting ideas is created. Grimmel, killing a dragon and receiving the praises of his people, decides to dedicate his life to exterminate the dragons; while Hiccup, forgiving the life of his dragon Toothless, shows that the coexistence of these two species is possible, also forming an unbreakable bond of friendship. This is where a conflict of opposing ideas arises, being an intense and well-considered conflict. Undoubtedly an archetype of a cool villain and who was surprised to see on screen.
History: Well done and well structured. A solid and entertaining story that keeps you wanting to know what will happen and how the events of the event will unfold. We have a Hiccup more determined than ever to create a utopia where dragons and humans can coexist peacefully. However, although his intentions are praiseworthy, he did not contemplate the possibility of overcrowding of Berk. With these scenes, we are given a clear message that it is okay to have good intentions, but they must also respond to solve problems and not create them.
Another aspect of the story that caught my attention was the conflict of Hiccup’s intellects against Grimmel, where each one used his talents, wit, and intelligence to keep the victory. In truth, one as a spectator feels that Hiccup is facing a great challenge, an opposing force that will not stop until achieving its objectives. This confrontation reaches its peak in the final duel when both fall into the sea, where you can see a deranged Grimmel and willing to die if that also means the death of his enemy. A scene truly worthy of admiration, since it feels the tension and the struggle of good against evil.
On the other hand, the action does not disappoint, although it is not at all violent (is a film for children XD). That is to say, you can clearly see how the characters fight with each other with weapons, they strike blows and even walk of arsonists setting fire to the boats and houses (XD) and all without spilling a single drop of blood. In general, it is very fluid and fast and the combats feel with a genuine weight that gives more drama to the story, with its touches of comedy that takes a smile from the viewer.
But without a doubt, the most important detail of the story is to see the personal conflict that our protagonist has, who is debating if he should follow his dream of building a utopia of dragons and humans or if he should finally leave them free in the Hidden World. But the conflict is not only limited to Hiccup but can also be witnessed in the dragon Toothless. Particularly, in the scene where he saves Hiccup and returns with him to the new island of Berk, one can feel like the black dragon is sad and in a way, resentful of renouncing the new change he achieved.
In the end, Hiccup reaches the devastating conclusion that this utopia will not be possible, at least for the moment. Dragons face constant dangers because of greedy and destructive humans. So, in a sad farewell, Hiccup, supported by his people, decides that the best thing is for the dragons to go to their sacred sanctuary. The farewell scene is really very emotional, perhaps comparable when a father sees his son mature and walk his own way in life. The film could not close more effectively, leaving a glimmer of hope, which is a melancholy ending, but not tragic. A final where you still dream of reaching an ideal that, in fact, is possible. Not today, not tomorrow. But one day it will come true.
Animation: Simply beautiful. I highlight in particular the natural environments that have chosen of extreme beauty and exquisiteness. Set primarily in the nature of Europe, where you see forests, snow, seas with fog, inhospitable land, and even magnificent northern lights. Sure, who gets the prize is the Hidden World, where everything is sublime, a world full of minerals, water, and lighting that is very nice and warm to look at. On the other hand, the architecture of the places feels alive and unified by the Viking culture on which it is based. No doubt a remarkable aspect and a work neatly done by DreamWorks.
In conclusion, "How to train your Dragon: The Hidden World" is a magnificent and very well made film, which closes the franchise with a flourish. If you are a fan of this franchise you will not be disappointed. Practically a must-have movie. I give this movie 4 out of 5 Light Furies. A beautiful closing to the trilogy that made us believe that the friendship between dragons and humans is not only possible but also forms an unforgettable duo.
Greetings
Rankakiu

i told myself i would either write headcanons (likely for moon queen after last night) or work on my book and instead i’m crying about merith look at my baby go
Merith gently woke her when they arrived, helping her down and excusing himself to take care of his mount. After brushing, feeding and in general doting on the creature, he couldn’t say he was surprised to see she had left. If he searched, he would likely find her in the library again; nose in a book and her hand flying over her notes. He hoped she found what she was looking for. He had others to disappoint tonight, though. His father and the council would need to know that the effort hadn’t paid off. Without the Dial, and without the goddess who built it, it would spell the end of Druids in Esceon. Avella was the only one to be widely believed to be returning, and she held little sway over this. So Merith withstood the scathing hours of how it would all be dealt with.
The extinction of yet another species, and those that lived here in Soglinia being forced to witness it. What recompense would they even have to offer? What made up for the sentient observation they would endure, as they each grew old and, one by one, faded away?
And then what of the Frosts, watching the products of their magics, their centuries of caring after them, the Goddess and the Dial dying out? A sorrow would settle over the northern lake such as the world had never seen. Another kingdom would shy away from the rest, isolating from those who effectively did nothing to stop any of this.
The Mer-rens would no doubt follow them, if only to keep their shores safe from the icy storms the Frosts would create if provoked enough. It would be self-preservation not righteous fury that drove them away.
They could not wait for a stray Goddess forever. She had been gone hundreds of years and Merith scolded himself to remember that. The Service had even reminded him of his foolish hopes: the Asmiir would’ve been able to preserve the Druids. Their genetic biology was so adaptable it would allow them to bear Druid children as if they themselves were one. They could bear a child of any compatible species as if they themselves were one. But the Asmiir were dead, they were careful to remind him. The Service took great pains to drive home that a kingdom could not be run on childish hope any longer.
Merith would have to grow up to be Emperor.
By the time he passed the library, his back hurt from standing so rigidly; his arms hurt from restraining them behind his back, unmoving; his jaw hurt from being clenched, stopping himself from making any retorts and looking ever more like a child in their eyes. His posture had slackened so much as he walked that he’d been staring at the ground most of the way, yet he jolted upright and stopped with a jerk when the door nearly swung open into his face. Kalliphaea had come out in a rush, stopping in her haste when she saw him.
“I thought of something, and I might need your help to—” She took him in, and he knew he’d been caught before he could properly compose himself. “Are you alright? Your—"
“I am fine, my lady. Please save your concern for your efforts in the library.”
She seemed to stumble about this, her brow knitting itself as she continued to look at him. “What happened? Why do you look like you’re about to cry?”
He cursed himself in his mind and looked at the ground, then off to the side, clearing his throat and sniffling slightly before looking at her again, his arms back behind him as he straightened back up. “Forgive my haggard appearance, my lady, I must be exhausted, that’s all. We’ve all had a very long day, I’m simply in need of a good night’s rest and I’ll be in top shape come the sunrise.”
He bowed his head to her, wishing her a peaceful night before continuing down the hall. Kalli only watched him go; she couldn’t command a prince. But she knew now that she did pity him. He kept his composure so well through most of the events of the day that being caught now must’ve been a heavier burden than whatever had caused his state to begin with. Even asking the guards to check on him would be an insult, she was sure.

Regarding Toothless and Berk, I do think he was under Red Death's control, and the only dragon around. Reason why he never stole food is that it simply wasn't his job, his job was making sure other dragons can steal food by scaring (and blowing up) vikings. So he was working for RD, just not as a thief. And Night Furies are clearly adapted to long-distance flights (large wings), so he might have gotted caught up by RD by accident. Night Furies do leave an impression of a tropical species.
Nice. I likewise believe that Toothless was controlled by the Red Death. When the romantic flight scene ends between Hiccup and Astrid, Toothless unhappily takes them to the Red Death’s nest, something he probably would not do unless he were prompted to do so. Then, Toothless is able to act as a “compass” for the Hairy Hooligans and lead them to Dragon Island... because he is being affected by the Red Death’s proximity. The Red Death does appear to have some control over him.
I know others believe that Toothless never stole food because it was not his role. Personally, I don’t think that Toothless would be needed solely as firepower or distraction for the other dragons to get the job done. The Red Death controls thousands of dragons. These dragons are stealthy, these dragons are powerful, and these dragons would easily be capable of doing raids without Toothless acting as support.
Perhaps we could argue many dragons acted as support during raids. I’m not inclined to go with that idea because that seems like that would get into some incredibly complicated multi-species planning dynamics. It’s possible, don’t get me wrong, but I suspect, from viewing the movies, that all the other dragons attacking Berk are all contributing to the chaos and stealing food. There doesn’t appear to be any separate group for support. We never seem to see that. Rather, the dragons appear to be using a simple, straightforward tactic: overwhelm the Vikings with sheer numbers and destruction.
I think the idea behind Toothless not steal food is to make him akin to Hiccup. It brings out a sense of mystery to the Night Fury and sets him off as an oddball that parallels Hiccup. As I say in the other post, which goes through my thoughts on this matter a little more thoroughly:
It sets Toothless off as a draconic weirdo… just like Hiccup is the village outcast. Toothless has no special role, but rather seems to be, like Hiccup, struggling to enter a role at all.
As far as the Night Fury’s native habitat and climate is concerned, I personally suspect that they are not tropical species given the material we’ve been given elsewhere across the franchise. Individuals like Eret - who lives in a very cold environment - can recognize the Night Fury on sight. Vikings from multiple tribes across the Barbaric Archipelago speak about the Night Fury, suggesting that the creature is native to the area. I personally would guess that the Night Fury, like the other species we see, is native to Northern Europe. But I guess we’ll see when HTTYD 3 comes out!

okay... I found Hiccup's Family name "Horrendous Haddock" intreaguing. so I desided to look it up. and lo and behold this are the results of my tiny useless research:
"The haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) is a saltwater fish from the family Gadidae, the true cods, it is the only species in the monotypic genus Melanogrammus. It is found in the North Atlantic Ocean and associated seas where it is an important species for fisheries, especially in northern Europe. It is also an important food fish and it is marketed fresh, frozen and smoked; smoked varieties include the Finnan haddie and the Arbroath smokie."
and this are how they are said to look like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so in relation to our beloved young Chief of Berk, Hiccup is seen feeding Toothless with fish. (and Im not one to assume,) but it might or might not be a cod species/ a haddock:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and in another thought that crossed my mind is that this dosent only apply to the fact where Hiccup feeds his dragon with this specific fish. yes, a couple of times, fish has been a main feeding material to the dragons by the riders. But it that's not the point here.
Tumblr media
"Berk" based in the Oxforddictionary, means "stupid person" or in our terms is known as an "idiot". the Devs of HTTYD (and the author) purposfully put it that way to (possibly) indicate that the people living in that island are stupid and that they can't decide or move for themselves unless being told to, hence the stubborn and roudy behaviors they display. like the time where they were one-sighted towards dragons who they saw only as pests until Hiccup proved that they were more than that as shown in the first HTTYD. and in other instances, in the short film "the gift if the Night fury" on the part where the dragons had to leave Berk to lay their young, the fist and emidiate reaction they did was to hall in on Hiccup frantically asking him "where have thier dragons gone off to?" as well as the part where NO ONE find Fishlegs suspicious other than when Hiccup did. And if it was not for that, Hiccup wouldn't have brought the dragons back to Berk. To sum it all up, Hiccup (and the rest of the line of previous Chiefs) Provided their people with almost everything they need. and as per mentioned earlier regarding the the Haddock it states that it is an "Important food fish" and in other words, Hiccup's family of Chiefs is the main root of Berk's sustainability. Although, not All of the Berkians respect the name. which gives the spotlight to the second name being "Horrendous"
