"He understood the insular nature of how Tom doesn't want to give anything away about himself — because he's a policeman at a time of such high level... the law being against him. So those two component factors made him shy, they made him insular. The only thing we needed to believe is two people were in love with him.. Why, he must be very beautiful, he must be quite charismatic, but he's giving nothing away.. So that is a very difficult thing to play, because the two slightly contradict each other. So Harry knew that — he knew that playing his cards close to his chest is gonna be quite a different acting challenge and that everybody else places something on Tom.. That's the way the story works and that's why he was right for the part."
Director Michael Grandage to E! Insider on Harry portraying Tom Burgess in My Policeman | 14 Oct, 2022. (Full cast interview).
ALSO can we talk about how fucking affirming and supportive everyone else was after Harry would speak?? They would commend him for his words and let him know he was doing well. I think he knows how he’s often perceived when trying to express himself and today they wanted to make him feel safe and confident.
found my policeman promo in the replies of a tweet i was looking at !! when you click on the tweet, unless you click on the retweet or like icons, it takes you directly to the screen where you’ll be able to stream/add the movie to your watchlist. personally, i kind of prefer it that way - no one will be able to go to the replies to potentially try to start shit about harry’s sexuality or holivia or anything. it’s not super mainstream promo or anything but it’s still nice to see nonetheless :’)
okay, so I recently got my copy of my policeman, the book.
And Im also waiting for the movie to be on prime so i can watch it.
Those of you who already watched it, I need advice on this. Should I wait till I see the movie to read it? Since its highly unlikely I'll be able to finish the book before Nov 6th. Or should I start to read it anyways?
It's also striking that Kit Connor said in his interview almost the EXACT SAME THING H said in the interview that shall not be mentioned: "he feels it’s important for young queer people to have a gentle, romantic show. “I don’t think there’s a lack of queer sex in the media, but a lot of the time when queer people are on screen, especially gay and bisexual men, they are heavily sexualised. So, I think there’s something quite nice about the fact that we’re not sexualising it.” weird, hub?
I think there are so many things about Kit’s personality and what happened with how people treated him about his sexuality that reminds me of Harry. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Louis and Harry were very aware of Heartstopper and Kit, himself.
And yes, it’s super interesting that he spoke about queer love/sex scenes that way—it’s very much the same thing H was trying to express (albeit, better articulated).
It subverted what was out there in other ways, too, he argues. For the most part, “queer media is pretty dark and depressing and involves a lot of trauma” by focusing on how hard it is to be yourself. “Whereas we wanted to push the other message: that being queer can be beautiful. There will be adversity, sure. There are highs and lows. But the highs can be really high, so it’s worth fighting for.”
Plus, he feels it’s important for young queer people to have a gentle, romantic show. “I don’t think there’s a lack of queer sex in the media, but a lot of the time when queer people are on screen, especially gay and bisexual men, they are heavily sexualised. So, I think there’s something quite nice about the fact that we’re not sexualising it.”
