Let's talk about Supernatural 15x07, "Last Call."

Or as I like to call it, "the episode that makes me go feral because it tells us so much about Dean's sexuality, character, and arc."

YES others have written meta! YES I will talk about it myself for the satisfaction! I LOVE IT SO MUCH.

This post was originally a thread on Twitter and I am crossposting it to my blog.

What's the context of this episode? Dean's been kind of down/depressed, feeling hopeless in the face of the idea that they have to defeat God (and not really working towards that goal much), and he's mid-divorce with Cas. He goes out on this solo case to try to clear his head.

And he ends up at Swayze's Bar.

Look, there are many things to be said about this. Dean loves Patrick Swayze. Arguably has a CRUSH on Swayze. It's very tied up in Dean pretending not to like "chick flicks" but he secretly does, which is queer coding. This was a Choice™️.

Speaking of Choices™️: professional actors made many here. Deliberately.

Dean is smacked on the ass by a woman and then Lee smacks him on the ass too. Dean and Lee CONSTANTLY have physical familiarity and fond eye contact. I will limit myself to 1 paragraph about this lest I list it all.

My point is that I just really need every person to digest and accept the fact that this is textually bi Dean. Not subtext; it's TEXT.

Dean and Lee had a relationship. Their history is alluded to in touch and in words. They had an orgy together. Dean's bisexuality is not repressed.

It's also now canon that Dean tries to hide that he can sing well. Most people don't know (like Sam) but some do (Lee). Hence "Eye of the Tiger" callback.

And so: that's also the implication for his sexuality. Dean singing ON STAGE with bi lighting is him being ready to be Out.

They dedicated an entire half an ep at minimum to emphasizing he's bi... and to Dean having a conversation with someone he (initially) trusts about potentially having a break from hunting, and what that could mean.

LEE: You're chasing missing persons, huh? I thought you'd be on to something bigger by now, like the Loch Ness Monster... Bigfoot.

DEAN: Trust me, uh, bigger doesn't always equal better. Besides, who's gonna look out after the little guy? God certainly isn't.

LEE: Damn, brother, that's dark.

DEAN: Yeah, it's been a rough, uh... it's been a rough decade, Lee.

LEE: Yeah.

DEAN: But that's a conversation for a different time, 'cause this, this right here, this is all right.

LEE: Well, I'm glad you approve. This is nothing you can't have, man.

DEAN: Oh, come on. Who's gonna kill the bad guys?

LEE: Somebody else. Dean, how many lives you think you saved, huh? Hundreds? Thousands? You deserve a break, bro. Hell, you might even deserve two.

"But Lee turns out to be a villain!" some might say. "Isn't the point that giving up hunting is bad?"

Nope.

Lee's a DARK MIRROR for Dean. He exists to exhibit the truths behind Dean's desires, and then what they'd look like if they turned bad. Take it from him: "I am you."

There are LAYERS here. You can't focus on the dark side and ignore the truths that take place in the (often bi) light.

The singing? The conversations about taking a break? Throwing men out of the bar, which is framed heroically? "Road House rules" (another Choice™️)?

NONE of that was bad. It shows what Dean wants.

Things only get bad–literally and visually–when Dean's tied up as Lee suddenly says wrong things in the dark.

The contrast exists to show that maintaining Goodness is a choice, and Dean would have no problem upholding that.

LEE: It's called a marid. It's a freaky-looking little thing, isn't it? [Lee laughs, and Dean stares at him, incredulous] Ah. As long as you feed it, it gives you money, it gives you health, everything you dreamed of.

DEAN: And so, what, it just costs innocent lives?

LEE: Dean, you and I both know no one's innocent. After everything we've done, aren't... aren't we owed a little happiness, huh? Don't we deserve that much?

DEAN: Listen to yourself. "We're owed." "We deserve." Come on, man. You're not God. Hell, God's not even God.

LEE: Good or bad... the world doesn't care. No one cares, Dean.

DEAN: Well, I do.

LEE: Yeah. And that's what got you here. Now, takes a while to drain a man, but listen to me. Don't worry about it, all right? Don't worry because once you lose a couple of pints, you just fall asleep, and then it'll be over.

[Lee pats Dean on the shoulder]

DEAN: Lee.

LEE: This... this is not how I wanted this to go, Dean. When that blonde girl walked in here last night, I should've know, you know, Dean Winchester, the righter of wrongs, you were gonna keep digging, and you were gonna figure me out. And if it's got to be you or me, well, I got to pick me, man.

"No one cares, Dean."

"Well, I do."

It's a reminder to himself as much as it is to Lee. It's a re-centering of purpose that he sorely needs.

And what's also key? Lee is human, but is now a "monster" in Dean's words. Because Lee lost his ability to care, Dean can't abide by that.

(Side note: bonus for the fact that Lee dies up against a wall by being impaled and he coughs up blood. You know who doesn’t cough up blood in their very weird and unrealistic death scene? Dean in the finale.)

Remember: Lee is a dark mirror for Dean. "I am you."

By fighting and (tragically) killing Lee, Dean "kills" the darker side of himself. The side that's struggling to keep going right now... AND the side that fears eventually wanting a break means you must be selfish and stop caring.

He can keep going. He can find strength to fight God–and in the end, take a break and CHOOSE peace. It won't make him dark. He's the most caring man on Earth, even when it's hard. That’s reinforced later.

Isn't he owed a little happiness? And that's not in the having. It's in just being.

The bonus is what's going on with Cas in this episode.

Dean's clearing his head and finding his center again while Cas is calling him.

Come home. I need you. Remember what matters.

And again, contrast: Lee turns out not to be "real/true" in the way Dean thought he was. But Cas IS.

And after Dean goes through all of this... he's grounded again, he recognizes that even amongst questions of what God controls there are still choices to be made, he's reminded that letting his caring heart lead him is priority, he's lost another friend...

He comes home to Cas.

It's awkward. They're still distanced.

But this episode is a turning point for Dean. He's not angry at Cas anymore, he wants to talk, he's ready to move forward... he just doesn't know how to yet.

And if you follow the through-line... then you get Rowena saying "fix it"... and then after that is the Purgatory prayer.

I just !!!

S15 is packed with Dean development to hone in towards the end of his arc, but "Last Call" manages to hit SO many buttons.

• He's always been bi, & is ready to be Out

• He can want a break–& maybe run a bar like the Roadhouse

• Caring is at the core of who he is

It's about the CHOICE. It's about wanting to live your truths, and that "caring" can mean many things–from defeating God and saving the world, to making the hard choices when it counts, to maybe running a bar where people are safe.

14x10 and its matching Texan Star also say hello:

DEAN: How come you always have a boyfriend?

PAMELA: How come you only want what you can't have?

DEAN: Whoa.

PAMELA: Besides, you don't want me. You just like to flirt. I'm a psychic, so I kinda know.

DEAN: All right.

PAMELA: So, still not ready to sell the bar, huh? It's a lot of money.

DEAN: Sell? This bar? This is my dream.

PAMELA; Yeah.

And I recognize that rereading this info is sad(der) now because of what we got in the end, so uh... sorry.

But that's half the point: it's repeatedly blatantly clear what we were meant to get, down to deliberate echoes in word choice–caring, happiness, deserve, even Roadhouse.

Dean was meant to choose to take a break, maybe run a bar–whether on Earth or in Heaven. At minimum, if Dean was meant to end up in Heaven, he was meant to choose it with eyes wide open. And the next time the phone rang with Cas' name (15x19), he RAN for him. He was VERY ready.

And the whole season tells you that. This episode is just my favorite.

MP100 OVA Drama CD Track 8 - Episode 7: Breakfast - English Translation

The MP100 OVA Drama CD, titled “The first spirits and such company trip; The other side of a journey that mends the heart and heals the soul and such” comes with the blu-ray/DVD, and is officially described as a compilation of 1) conversations from the day before the OVA itself & 2) exchanges that aren’t depicted in the OVA. More info here! Here’s the translation of the eighth track, “Episode 7: Breakfast”! Characters: Mob, Ritsu, Serizawa, Reigen, Dimple, Teru

MOB [As narrator]

This seventh story takes places during breakfast the following morning.

[BGM: birds chirping, SFX: door sliding]

MOB

(Yawning) Ah, I slept well… I feel great, I’m sure that’s in part thanks to the onsen… Ah, good morning, Ritsu! Did you sleep well, too?

RITSU

S-sure! Super soundly.

SERIZAWA

Everyone! Good morning! Woooow, it’s such a refreshing morning, isn’t it?

REIGEN

Yeah. It’s fantastic.

DIMPLE

You don’t look so good. You’ve got bags under your eyes, too.

SERIZAWA

Reigen-san… were you unable to sleep…?

TERU

Even though the futon was really soft and felt great to lie on…

DIMPLE

It’s because you sleep too much during the day… for someone who made a whole guidebook, you sure don’t have any planning ability.

REIGEN

Don’t say that, moron, I slept fine! Well, if you guys had just been quiet, I probably could’ve slept more soundly, but...

MOB

Eh? Were we loud?

RITSU

No, t-that’s not true at all, nii-san! We slept just fine.

REIGEN

Eh, whatever! More important than that - food! I missed my chance to eat last night, so I’ve been looking forward to this…!

[SFX: door sliding]

Oooooh, it’s here, it’s here! This is it - a real ryokan breakfast! White rice in a wooden container, colourful pickled vegetables, crispy nori, natto, raw eggs… Oh!! Walleye pollack roe and simply scalded whitebait! And that’s iwanori there too, isn’t it! Everything’s here! Moreover, warm flavourful miso soup, and wanmono with a delicate touch of high quality seasoning. Then! Grated daikon and grilled salmon, cut in a rare way… 100% perfect! As expected of a long established ryokan! This is it! A real Japanese-style breakfast!

[SFX: door sliding]

MOB

It really does look delicious…

RITSU

Looking at this I feel like I could eat everything, even though we ate so much the night before…

TERU

Considering I live alone, this breakfast is like a dream to me.

SERIZAWA

And I only ever eat cup noodles… Reigen-san, thank you so much for bringing me along on this trip!

REIGEN

I already told you this doubles as your welcoming party, didn’t I? In any case, let’s eat! It’s all gonna go cold otherwise!

[SFX: hands clapping together]

EVERYONE

Let’s eat!

[BGM: that soft music that plays when OVA title drops]

[SFX: eating, cutlery against bowls and such, happy exclamations]

REIGEN

Mob… seriously, did you put raw egg on top of your natto?

MOB

I did.

REIGEN

Ah, amateurs are such as bother... Listen. With the raw egg, your body becomes unable to absorb the precious vitamins in the natto!

MOB

Really? But, I like having raw egg with my natto…

REIGEN

If you want to have your natto with eggs, then make it only the yolk. That way, you don’t lose any of the nutrition from the natto. That’s something good to remember.

MOB

Alright. If that’s what you say, Shishou…

REIGEN

And Ritsu. You shouldn’t put whitebait on your grated daikon. The daikon inhibits your body’s ability to absorb amino acids from the whitebait. I recommend you have the grated daikon with the grilled salmon, and the whitebait with something else on the table.

RITSU

(unimpressed) Huh. Is that so.

TERU

Reigen-san, you really know a lot, don’t you?

REIGEN

Hanazawa… are you really eating that high-quality nori just the way it is? There’s a griddle over there! Nori is something you should lightly toast before eating!

TERU

Ah, that’s right, isn’t it? That must be what I forgot when I was eating the ibo-niku steak from last...

REIGEN

I’m not talking about that! ...In any case, don’t talk about about delicious-sounding food I didn’t get a chance to eat!

DIMPLE

Seriously… stop trying to one up these middle schoolers with how much you know about food, it’s immature.

REIGEN

On the contrary, it’s evidence of my maturity that I’m able to give this advice. They’re in middle school, they’re still growing - I have to teach them the most nutritionally-beneficial ways in which they can eat. It’s my obligation as an adult!

DIMPLE

You say that, but you just want to show off how much you know, don’t you?

REIGEN

Shut up, evil spirit!

SERIZAWA

But really, all of this food is delicious, isn’t it! This pickled daikon radish [SFX: mouth stuffed, still talking] is so crunchy…

REIGEN

Serizawa… you’ve still got a lot to learn as well.

SERIZAWA

Ehhh?? Did I... do something wrong? Did I take too much or…?

REIGEN

Needless to say, pickled daikon radish just by itself is delicious. However, there’s ways to make it even more so…! [SFX: knife brandished, loud chopping] First of all, cut the pickled daikon radish into tiny pieces using the provided knife, then mix it with natto! You could leave it like this and it’ll be delicious BUT, you could also throw in walleye pollack roe cut into little pieces with a hint of seasoning plus some iwanori! After that, roast some nori for 30 seconds or so until it’s crunchy, break it into pieces on top and… complete! The ultimate pollack-daikon-natto!

[SFX: munch, echo] MM! TASTY!

TERU

Eh…? Is that a special recipe?

REIGEN

So? Anyone fancy a bite?

TERU

Ah, I’m sorry… I don’t really like natto.

RITSU

I’m not great with walleye pollack roe.

MOB

And I just ate natto, so…

SERIZAWA

T-then… I’ll have some!

REIGEN

“Then”?! What the hell do you mean, “then”!? Fine. I’ll eat it by myself.

SERIZAWA

I… I’m sorry…

REIGEN

In any case, Serizawa. I noticed that you’re not eating the skin of the salmon - why is that?

SERIZAWA

T-that’s…! It’s because I don’t like the skin… I deeply apologise.

REIGEN

Hey now, I’m not criticising you. I was just thinking that I felt a little sorry for you is all, not knowing how delicious salmon skin can be.

SERIZAWA

So how delicious can it be?

REIGEN

Well, firstly, toast the remaining skin on the griddle until it’s crispy. After doing so and pulling it apart, put it on rice with some whitebait! ...but, with just that, it’s pretty fishy, SO! [SFX: knife brandished] You take the pickled vegetables, cut them finely… (carries on mumbling in concentration)

SERIZAWA

Ah… I really do want to eat this, but… I’m so full…

DIMPLE

You were able to serve yourself two more times while Reigen’s been making that.

REIGEN

Well, what can you do. So, Mob? You’ve been training your muscles, you need to eat a lot, don’t you?

DIMPLE

Reigen… you’re abusing your authority over your employees.

REIGEN

I’m not forcing anyone. It’s advice, through and through! It comes from a place of love...

DIMPLE

That’s just what a boss abusing their authority would say.

REIGEN

Ah, you’re annoying! Someone who can’t even eat this stuff should just shut up and go suck up some spirits!

[BGM end]

DIMPLE

Seriously?! Was that an order?!

REIGEN

ANYWAY! All I wanted to say is; delicious food is something that shouldn’t be eaten sloppily. Remember that! And now; I’m eating!

DIMPLE

You’re slow. Everyone’s finished.

[SFX: Reigen eats grossly ASMR]

REIGEN

Mmmm!! Delicious, delicious!! [SFX: slurp] Alright, what should I go for next!!

DIMPLE

Oi, licking your chopsticks, Reigen… that’s a breach of manners.

[BGM change]

REIGEN

Huh!? [SFX: more slurping, mouth full] MM!! This pollack-daikon-natto is so delicious!!

MOB

Shishou… my mum told me that you shouldn’t draw plates toward you using your chopsticks.

RITSU

Ah, you’ve dirtied the miso soup!

DIMPLE

The way you eat is filthy.

REIGEN

[SFX: mouth stuffed] Oh, shut up, you guys!

TERU

Reigen-san… I don’t think it’s good to speak when your mouth is full.

RITSU

And the natto, too...

TERU

And I think holding the plate that holds the fish is a breach of manners, too, isn’t it... I’ve heard it’s only fine to hold rice bowls, small bowls and small plates.

DIMPLE

Piling up plates when you’re done with them isn’t good, either.

MOB

And, my mum told me eating with an open mouth is-

REIGEN

Oh, come ON, you’re all so annoying! I was showing you all what NOT to do! Everything I just did was for that purpose. So don’t copy me! I just wanted to show you! Understood?!

EVERYONE

Uh… understood.

[SFX: gross eating continues]

DIMPLE

You’re deplorable, you are.

REIGEN

(echo) MM! TASTY!

Ah… the onsen was great, the food is delicious! What an amazing trip, huh? Haha! Hahahaha!! Haha!! Haha… ha… ha.

MP100 OVA Drama CD Track 3 - Episode 2: Going Shopping - English Translation

Here’s the translation of the third track, “Episode 2: Going Shopping”!

Characters: Serizawa, Reigen, Mob, Ritsu, Dimple

MOB [As Narrator]

This second story is about a shopping trip that occurred while we were on our way to the hot springs.

[BGM: Train station noises. SFX: running]

SERIZAWA

Urgh...

REIGEN

Hurry, hurry! We’re gonna miss it!

[SFX: Train doors closing. Train horn, departure]

REIGEN

Damn it…

MOB

We messed up...

RITSU

Considering the location, I don’t think the next train will be for a while, nii-san...

SERIZAWA

The next train departing for Ibogami Village will be… in 58 minutes!

MOB

Amazing! You went that far taking notes.

DIMPLE

In 58 minutes… that’s not even enough time to do some sightseeing.

MOB

Dimple, since you can float anyway, you could just go on ahead?

DIMPLE

Well, that’s… I could do, but what’s a trip without companions?

REIGEN

What’s that, Dimple? Even though you’re an evil spirit, you’d feel lonely by yourself?

DIMPLE

Nope! We wouldn’t have missed the train had you not been taking a shit for so damn long! What the hell are we meant to do in this tiny space of time?

REIGEN

Heh! Listen up, everyone. Perhaps my stomach ache has landed us in this situation, but, you could also say it’s necessary that this has happened.

MOB

Shishou, what’s this, all of a sudden?

RITSU

You’re talking as if us being stuck here is a good thing, but…

REIGEN

- The reason being, going on a trip is something that greatly resembles life itself. You can’t always be moving forward. Sometimes, it’s necessary to pause, look back at everything that brought you to where you are, and make preparations for the future!

DIMPLE

And? Your point?

REIGEN

Pausing en route to our destination… this pause means we can go shopping!

[BGM start, SFX: footsteps]

MOB

A local souvenir shop...

SERIZAWA

Ohh! There’s so much here!

RITSU

There’s not just souvenirs, there’s bento boxes and local specialty products.

REIGEN

Buy anything and as much as you’d like - we’re covering this in-house.

MOB, RITSU, DIMPLE

...huh?

REIGEN

...What’s with you guys? What’s with the “huh”?

MOB

I just… think this is unusual, is all.

RITSU

Reigen-san… are you alright?

DIMPLE

Nah, it’s clear he’s not alright in the head.

REIGEN

You’re all being rude! I’m always thinking of you all! I get you takoyaki, or ramen, or hamburgers, or…

MOB

That’s true, but…

DIMPLE

Those are all cheap, though, no?

REIGEN

Ah, shut up already! In any case, just buy whatever you want!

MOB

O-okay!

RITSU

Let’s go, nii-san?

MOB

Sure.

[SFX: footsteps]

MOB

Oh, these oyaki look delicious!

RITSU

There’s frozen satsumas over here, nii-san. I haven’t tried them yet!

MOB

What should I do? The oyaki look good, but… this ice cream would be good, too…

RITSU

Nii-san, you really love milk, don’t you? I think I’ll go for something safe… a Zebra Prefecture specialty two-tone onigiri.

SERIZAWA

I’ll go for the zebra-stripe soboro bento box.

DIMPLE

I wonder how this is? This zebra-stripe nori bento box? Well, it doesn’t matter if I eat or no, so whatever.

REIGEN

Oi, you guys! Come over here, there’s something I wanna show you.

[SFX: footsteps]

MOB

What, Shishou?

RITSU

Hmm? An extremely spicy habanero oyaki and a wasabi manjuu?

REIGEN

We can’t get these anywhere else, so they’ll add to our memories of this trip, no?

MOB

I’m sorry… I’m not great with spicy food.

RITSU

I’ll also pass.

REIGEN

Hmm… then how about it, Serizawa?

SERIZAWA

A-ah?! But - I - I’m… (Thinking: What should I do…? If your boss recommends it, you shouldn’t turn it down… that’s what the manual said…)

DIMPLE

Stop it, Reigen, you could get sued for abusing your authority.

REIGEN

Then, what about this? Grasshopper mushipan, hornet larva sushi.

MOB

Food made using insects is…

RITSU

Nope.

REIGEN

Ah, but is that really okay, guys? It’s times like these where you should be adventurous with your food choices! One of the best things about a trip is being able to savour the sensation of tasting things that you never have before! One of the reasons I invited you all along on this trip was because I wanted you to experience new things.

DIMPLE

Hmm? What’s this? There’s something written in front of the register.

REIGEN

Uh?!

[BGM ends]

DIMPLE

Hmm..? “If you buy 3 goods at our store, you’ll receive a special key holder featuring the mascot character of Zebra Prefecture, ‘two-tone-kun’.”

REIGEN

...Huuuuuh? Really, is that true...? Nah, I didn’t know that at all, hahaha…. hahaha… haha...

DIMPLE

Don’t tell me, Reigen… you wanted the keyholder?

REIGEN

I just SAID that I didn’t know! ...And even if I did, there’s no way I’d want something like that! ...Though, people who remember their experiences via trinkets definitely exist…

DIMPLE

Shigeo… must be tough, having a boss with bad taste.

RITSU

What did you buy, Reigen-san?

REIGEN

Ah? I went for the standard sansai bento, dango on skewers, and hot tea…

SERIZAWA

Oh! Looks delicious!

MOB

But what about the extremely spicy oyaki, or the wasabi manjuu?

REIGEN

No way, too spicy. I don’t even have wasabi with my sushi.

RITSU

And the grasshopper mushipan? Hornet larva sushi?

REIGEN

Too gross, no way.

DIMPLE

And there you were talking about having a food adventure.

[BGM start]

REIGEN

Excuse me! We’d like to pay.

[SFX: Till sound]

MOB [As Narrator]

And like that, we bought our bentos and snacks, and proceeded toward Ibogami onsen, but…

REIGEN

AHHHH!

DIMPLE

Damn, you’re so freaking loud! What?! Did you eat the spicy habanero oyaki?

REIGEN

No! I forgot to take the receipt …I’m such an IDIOT!
