OC Evolution Tag - Laverna Rosefist

Thank you @salemssimblr for the tag!!

Laverna is the oldest sim I still have access too, as well as the only one (or one of a very, very few) who has undergone major changes over the course of her sim-life. Her earliest version, from 2021, was made as a submission for a Baldur's Gate-inspired save that never ended up happening. Then in 2022, I revamped her as my first ever dnd character concept, giving her a true fantasy makeover. (This was after rescuing her files from where I'd shared them in 2021.) In 2023, she got an updated makeover, though I didn't change a ton, except for giving her the iconic black eyes and thief's outfit... (At some point, either in 2021 or 2023, I gave her a backstory revamp.) Her hair, skintone, tail, and nails have stayed the same across all versions, though.

My DnD Character Spreadsheet

The only one of these characters I've played for more than 10 sessions is Rook, who just played his 25th session. And the only other ones I've played at ALL have been Zenara (2 sessions), Avra (oneshot), Asra (5-6 sessions, I think??), Asola (8 sessions), Satora (2-shot), and Cyra (3 sessions, but active ongoing campaign). Morana is technically for a pathfinder game that hasn't happened yet.

I have character sheets made up for most of, if not all of, these guys. And they all have their own character pages (in the spreadsheet) that are in various stages of completion.

Aww thank you for asking about my sad hedge wizard! He’s got a special place in my heart.

Where in the world does your OC feel most at home? Is there any reason why? If it’s not the place they were born, where were they born? Is there a certain somebody that makes them feel at home where ever they may be? What does home mean to them?

Velaren feels most at home in the old port town where he lived for several decades leading up to our current campaign. Once upon a time he was training to be a wizard, but after his expulsion (and the year he spent in jail for magic crimes), he changed his name and moved across the continent. It’s a bit of a double-edged sword though because while he felt safest during those years where he worked as a launderer and a mender, he had to deny his natural curiosity in favor of keeping a low profile. He shelved his cantrip primer during those decades and only recently started practicing magic again in small ways.

He still associates the feel of fabric between his fingers and the smell of soap and the meditative practice of mending with home. I imagine this is also partly because he came from a family of weavers, before his parents noticed his talent for magic and sent him off to wizard school. He doesn’t want to go back to his hometown for a mix of reasons, the biggest one being that it would mean facing the shame he brought on his family due to his expulsion and imprisonment.

Before the campaign, the person who made Velaren feel at home was his mentor Qalark. Lark was an easygoing man with a roguish streak who never belittled or judged Velaren. They traveled together for awhile and Lark taught him how to do street magic and tell engaging stories and also rob people. He wasn’t the greatest role model, but young Velaren was hungry for positive validation. He was like a father figure of sorts.

Right now, the person who makes Velaren feel at home wherever he is would probably be his newest traveling companion, Estella. She’s a gnome, but this world has never seen gnomes before, so everyone just assumes she’s either a really pink halfling or else Velaren’s daughter. Helping Estella navigate the culture shock of this alien society she’s been thrust into gives Velaren a sense of purpose he’s been lacking for a long time. And she’s also the first person ever to show him any tenderness, which is a shock to his system considering his self-destructive tendencies. He’s fiercely protective of her.

Home for Velaren means safety. Right now, that is with the people who look out for each other, the people who accept you and encourage you to try new and scary things and who have your back when you fail or mess up. Home is a wagon full of animals and his traveling companions. It’s the fuzzy little creatures who comfort you after a hard day. It’s music around a campfire while you share a pot of tea.

What little things do they notice about people or the world around them that make them happy? What tiny little treasures do they find in the normal every day that makes the world seem a little brighter for them?

Velaren notices the ways people are brave. Like a child trying to buy something in a store for the first time, a person riding in a boat when they are afraid of water, a blacksmith trying to follow the schematics for something outside their skill range despite knowing it might not turn out the way they want, or even someone admitting that they need help to their friends. Seeing other people being brave reminds him that he can be brave, too.

Velaren also notices the beauty in a well-mended piece of clothing. Mended objects in general, things that were broken being told they were loved enough to receive new life, makes him smile. He also loves woodworking and whittling, so skillful carvings on buildings and objects always catches his eye. He appreciates anything made well through some craft, but he also finds joy in the haphazard, mistake-riddled, starting work of someone who is still developing their skill. Because you learn through mistakes. And the fact that it exists means someone is trying and failing and being encouraged to keep trying.

I do love the "holy pacifistic healer" trope but I just can't play it aha

I have three current DND characters and they're all faith based, two clerics and a paladin and god, they really would just,,, kill.

Okay, Nym my Night Cleric drow wouldn't, he's far too full of anxiety and far too forgiving. 'Sometimes people we love hurt us and that's okay' - sURE BUT NOT WHEN THEY LITERALLY SACRIFICED YOU TO A GOD NYM DEAR

But Pollux the kalashtar paladin and Infernus the fire genasi cleric/bloodhunter do Not hesitate to kill.

Pollux is my Curse of Strahd OC and that game breeds characters getting worse and Pollux got so angry at everyone aha

Infernus has toned down his readiness to kill but in the last session he maybe went off the rails a little and cast flame strike on two people who had not seemed antagonistic yet (they absolutely were fiends we were trying to kill, but the way he revealed that to the party was to fucking incinerate them)

I love to play characters who have a complicated relationship with faith, who want to believe wholeheartedly but they're too cynical for that and they have to navigate that relationship

Making a level 16 character for a one shot and I’m pleased

They’re a Yuan-Ti gloom stalker ranger (14) twilight cleric (2). They’re going to have the Dungeon Delver feat (bc it’s a dungeon crawl) and I haven’t decided the other two yet. But they are invisible to creatures who rely on darkvision to see them in darkness, they have 300 feet of darkvision, their fighting style is two weapon fighting (so two attacks per attack action plus a bonus action attack), on their first turn in combat if they use the attack action they can make an extra attack as part of that action, and once a turn if they miss an attack with the attack action they can make another attack as part of the same action. I love gloom stalkers.

Big fan of sun motifs in characters not necessarily being about positivity and happiness and how they're so " bright and warm" but instead being about fucking brutal they are.

Radiant. A FORCE of nature that will turn you to ash. That warmth that burns so hot it feels like ice. Piercing yellow and red and white. A character being a Sun because you cannot challenge a Sun without burning alive or taking everything down with them if victorious.

D&D OC Intro

(inspired by @goldenwaves's post!!)

This is FAR from everyone, but it's the characters I've played for more than a oneshot, and the ones I actually talk about. (I would have added Asra, but I didn't have a pic of her with a black background. I'll probably update this later.)

TRANSCRIPT:

Zenara Raventhorn (aka Zen)

Tiefling Warlock (Pact of the Fiend)

The first D&D character I ever played.

Only got to play two sessions with them.

Unintentionally inspired by Critical Role Campaign 2

Backstory written between 1-3am on my phone.

Has an imp familiar who looks like a raven.

Occasionally gets possessed by their patron, and then gets given new powers as an "apology".

Fire theme.

Rook (Adrian Lockwood)

Half-elf Rogue (Swashbuckler)

First (and only) character to make it past 8 sessions. (So far.)

Disaster bisexual pirate boy with SO MUCH trauma.

Wields a magic rapier that was a gift from his captain + first mentor.

Enemies with a different pirate captain who wants to capture him.

Has decent charisma but relatively terrible social skills.

Bastard son of a nobleman. Has daddy issues.

Reckless and impulsive to a fault. Would die for his friends.

May or may not be cursed by a demon lord.

Asola Riava Ashmark

Aasimar Paladin (Oath of Vengeance)

Made it 8 sessions before we switched campaigns.

Doesn't know she's an aasimar. Her powers show up when she experiences extreme emotions and it's only ever happened twice in her life.

Got briefly possessed and then force-shut-down by a literal god.

Has a habit of picking up stray traumatized young people.

The party's moral compass. Tried to keep them somewhat in line.

Believes that laying down her life to save someone else's is worth it. Swears she doesn't have self-worth issues.

Morana Novak

Witch (Curse Patron)

Character for an eventual Pathfinder game.

Named after a Slavic goddess of death and winter.

Necromancer, got kicked out of her hometown for graverobbing and experimenting on corpses.

Her familiar is a raven named Miro, who she rescued and trained.

Autistic as hell, which will be fun for me to play.

Very creepy and unsettling person.

One of her future party members nicknamed her "Mortician".

Cyra

Fire Genasi Barbarian (Path of the Storm Herald)

Newest character on this powerpoint.

Fights with a magical flaming quarterstaff that she can summon from inside herself.

Has a stolen, magically powered vehicle.

Formerly part of a cult. Only stayed around for their toxic then-girlfriend.

Somehow basically the least traumatized member of the party. That was NOT the plan.
