the new university ship is so funny to me, bc it’s so utterly unconcerned with ARTs hatred of it.
it reminds me a lot of bunny flopping dynamics, where if a rabbit flops down next to a human or another bun it’s cool with, it’s a sign of trust, but if a bun flops down next to another bun its not friends with it’s seen as a fuck you. like not only are you not a threat, but i’m happy and you’re miserable :3

I finished! Behold, my pretty pretty Murderbot fan art I’ve been working on. I did it in CMYK since a friend of mine is going to Cosine next weekend and generously offered to print some fan art for me and take it to get signed by Martha Wells. 😭 Now I just have to finish my (unrelated) flyer for pins/washi tape/postcards/stickers etc for that same friend since she also offered to hand one out for me at the event. 🥺
Can you tell I’m full of nerves about having completed my fan art? Imagine it getting signed and being sent to me and me being able to put it up on my wall holy shit. Anyway, I’m giving a nice high-res file to my patrons because they’re patrons and lovely. 💛

this is the product of a few nights spent listening to Murderbot audiobooks. One of the reasons I read so few actual sci-fi books is because when I have to use a ton of brainpower to remember past events and arcs and characters and worldbuilding and connections I get exhausted and it’s not fun. Scifi has a lottt of that. But I really reallllly liked Murderbot so i wanted to put in the effort to understand it. I would draw little diagrams and maps and doodles on a giant canvas while the guy was reading and it helped me to understand what was happening better.
let me tell u there is nothing more AWFUL than WANTING to invest yourself in something you like but ur brain is like NO!! TOO MUCH WORK!!! IF I HAVE TO THINK ABOUT THINGS REALLY HARD AND EXPEND ENERGY I WILL FUCKING DIE!! I HAVE TO ENJOY EVERY SECOND OF EVERYTHING and then u feel bad because u don’t feel like a real fan or whatever that means.
sometimes the stars align and I do manage to finish a series like Murderbot!! It helps that it’s novellas mostly and doesn’t have a lot of spin-offs. (Star trek, I’m gonna kill you.) Man I need to watch more tv shows though. Words can’t describe how much Murderbot is like me frrrrr. Might be projecting onto it a tad bit

I saw a great blog talking about how MB thinks Ratthi is cool when canonically he’s a nerd…
Well: counterpoint (sort of):
Murderbot describes Gurathin as this loner nerd with no friends who spends most of his time reading scientific papers in lounges with lots of plants; and who need to get his glasses visual augments checked
Gurathin who is canonically the only person (other than ART—which is canonically a mega-genius) to spot MB is a rogue
The one who figures out the way to hack GrayCris
The one who stays calm in the Serrat situation, producing instant “convincing” actually pretty fake documents and (in the fight) actually enabling Pin-Lee to grab his communicator
The one who opens the barriers, saving MB’s life
Oh and he often points out flaws in MB’s plans
And in Network Effect MB says (much as it hates to admits it) it wishes he was there…
Gurathin is a little bit unusual—and MB seems to miss this

One thing I love about Murderbot is that it is such a delightfully complex character that it can be so relatable to so many different people.
Like, I recently recommended the series to two friends who are very different. One I think will like it because of the aro/ace/agender-ness and the more existential "what defines a person" aspects of it. The other I think will like it for the exploration of trauma and the horrors of capitalism and the sense of humor.
Like any good story, it has some very specific things that only some people might relate to, but also some more general, more universal aspects, and we all like it for some combination of it.
And I think even more so since Murderbot is such an unreliable narrator when it comes to its own internal experience. We have to read between the lines to see how it really feels, and everyone reads between the lines slightly differently based on our own experiences and viewpoints.
And like, because Murderbot is on a character journey where it is discovering itself, we all interpret the steps on the journey differently. Like, a lot of it is Murderbot figuring out its boundaries. There are some parts where it pushes out of its comfort zone and widens its boundaries (being out of armor/being observed, which doesn't seem to bother it nearly as much in later books), and other parts where it asserts its boundaries (like with hugs). Both of those things are important for its character growth.
And someone who is trying to assert their own boundaries might latch onto the importance of Murderbot doing the same and enjoy discussions/fanart/fanfic of people respecting those boundaries. But someone who is trying to break out of a defensive, potentially maladaptive comfort zone might really appreciate the way that Murderbot becomes more comfortable with certain things over time and might enjoy discussions/fanart/fanfiction of it learning to enjoy some things it has expressed reflexive distaste for. Both are wonderful ways of interacting with the work.
The important thing for me is that Murderbot is a (beautifully written and complex) fictional character who means different things to different people. We all connect to Murderbot slightly differently and I think that's beautiful.

Was just scrolling through the news articles on my phone and this popped up?? (Not sure how I feel about the casting because Alexander Skarsgard is basically the complete opposite of how I picture Murderbot lmao. This is how I felt when Edward Cullen was cast back in hs 😂)
