(Last night Gurathin had said this was a weak point, that this was where the plan would fall apart. It was irritating that he was right.)

for the ask game: ratthi murderbotdiaries?
Send Me a Character
Oh, Ratthi, my beloved...🥰
First impression
Like a lot of us, I only had eyes for Murderbot the first time I read ASR---the human team absolutely got shoved to my mental backburner while I was busy relating to MB. In the five seconds I did spend thinking about Ratthi, it was mostly in a "oh, so this is going to be the problem child, huh?" way when he almost walked outside into the worm's mouth.
Impression now
I love him, your honor.
But also, he is an all-around delightful human being. There's a kindness and an earnestness to his character that is just so endearing you can't help but like him, especially when you layer in the fact that he's excellent at his job, great at adapting to high-pressure situations on the fly, and has the people skills to successfully navigate the absolutely wild interpersonal interactions that the series keeps throwing at him.
Favorite moment
That whole sequence in Fugitive Telemetry where he and Gurathin drop everything to help Murderbot do some light breaking and entering. It feels like the equivalent of an errand hang-out, but if your bestie spends its spare time solving murders rather than picking up dry cleaning and going to Target. I love the implication that this is just what they do now, once Murderbot has settled into the group. Friends help friends with projects, right? So, obviously, Ratthi is going to help in whatever way he can.
Idea for a story
I kind of want to do more of his PoV for various scenes throughout the series. He's present for so many of the juiciest scenes---there's a lot to work with!
Also, it might be fun to do something with his friendship with Arada and Overse, perhaps with some backstory on their first meetings and how they moved from colleagues to besties.
Unpopular opinion
In all honesty, I don't feel like there's too much pressure re: popular vs. unpopular opinions in the Murderbot corner of the internet. The only thing that comes to mind with Ratthi is that I think we tend to...soften him a little too much sometimes. There's a tendency to focus mostly on his skill as a people person or a friendly face, not necessarily on the fact that if he wasn't so good at his actual job, he probably wouldn't be on Mensah's team. We see him tackle gory jobs like cleaning up the battle aftermath on ART in Network Effect, we see him jump into helping with medical emergencies, and in Fugitive Telemetry, he immediately identifies that "someone was dead here" when they come upon the scene of the murder because the physical signs are obvious to a biologist. As far as the humans of the series go, Ratthi is very capable!
Favorite relationship
Aside from the obvious friendship with Murderbot itself, I really do love that he's best friends with Arada and Overse. I love that these three stuck together for the next survey to follow the disastrous events of ASR. I love that their friendship is so obvious and loud that even Book One Murderbot could immediately point it out. I just really like seeing healthy platonic friendships (especially ones that coexist with and do not compete against healthy romantic ones involving some of the same characters), okay?
Favorite headcanon
The infamous "Who's this?" line from ASR was a full-on my-brain-is-short-circuiting-and-my-mouth-got-ahead-of-my-mind moment, not necessarily an ah-yes-a-stranger-to-be-introduced moment.

(1/2) Ahhh hello!! I’ve now finished both the short story and fugitive telemetry and both were once again amazing!! This series is too good I am Yelling!!!
I loved reading abt mb and the whole setting from mensah’s perspective and the insight the story gave into her character!! YES what you say abt the media is so true - even mensah, who’s very informed and critical abt the corporation, admits that the propaganda worked on her, and the impact the documentary could have in dismantling that. I also loved how her relationship w mb is portrayed!! They way they care for each other is so good - not just pitying each other but with obvious concern for their trauma and wellbeing. To see that mensah respects and finds mb as dependable as it much as it thinks so of her… ahhh ;-;
FT was also amazing n it was great to read this in chronological order, thanks for the recommendation!! It was interesting how this book showed mb’s difficulties in gaining others on preservation’s trust, how even tho it’s a more accepting place than the corporation rim, there were still challenges, again bc of the pervasiveness of propaganda and the wrongful use of secunits in the corporation. It was nice to see how mb dealt with this of its own volition, and how Indah started to come around by working n interacting w mb, and the presaux team’s advocation too
(2/2) And YES I just love the presaux team sm n it was great to see how their relationship n understanding w mb has developed in FT!! I also love how they’ve been fleshed out more as characters, n mb’s dynamics w pin lee, ratthi, and gutharin r too good :’) I also rly enjoyed this book bc it had lots of mb being Super Extremely Exasperated with humans which is always fun to read :’DDD Now for network effect!!! I’m excited but also sad it’s almost over ahhhh, also i have to say it’s been super fun discussing this with you!! :DDDD
HELLO ANON MY BELOVED im sorry i didnt answer this earlier my brain is made of cheese (full of holes and such)
YEAH mensah's perspective adds SO MUCH for such a brief bit of story. they respect each other and rely on each other so much ;-;
FT slaps like i love love love a good murder-of-the-week style story SO MUCH so it was really just delicious to have that in a mb book. it shows so well that just because preservation is better, it still has its own unique issues and theres still unfair distrust and lack of understanding
YEAAAAH THOSE ARE MY FAVOURITE PRESAUX DYNAMICS TOO... they all show a different side to mb which i love? ratthi's unconditional support, pin lee's no-nonsense acceptance, and gurathin's tendency to poke and prod all reveal something different in their interactions and in how mb reacts and responds which is so fun. i love when characters interact with each other. absolutely stellar
ANYWAY YES i hope youre enjoying NE and please let me know your Final Review :DDD

I sighed, managed to keep most of it internal. Of course she had to say that. What else could she do. I tried to decide whether to believe it or not, or whether it mattered, when I was hit by a wave of I don’t care. And I really didn’t. I said, “Okay.”
In the camera feed, Ratthi and Pin-Lee exchanged a look. Gurathin grimaced, radiating skepticism. Mensah just said, “Is there any chance HubSystem knows about your governor module?

Murderbot and Gurathin are like cats:
All Systems Red:
Page 66–I kept an eye on him through one of the drones. He kept looking at me, or trying not to look at me, which was worse. I didn’t need the distraction right now. When the next attack came, it was going to be fast.
Page 74–He said, “Why don’t you want us to look at you?”
My jaw was so tight it triggered a performance reliability alert in my feed. I said, “You don’t need to look at me. I’m not a sexbot.”
Page 80–I didn’t look at him though I knew through the feed that he was looking at me. I hadn’t closed my helmet; I didn’t feel like hiding from him.
Page 102–Gurathin watched me, too, but he didn’t say anything. I wondered if he had told Mensah not to buy me.
Next time they interact is Exit Strategy:
Page 54–Pin-Lee elbowed the other two in and let the door slide closed. She had clearly told them already, because Ratthi was grinning. He said, “You look great! What have you been doing?”
Gurathin’s expression I interpreted as appalled. I still don’t like you, either.
[note my personal head canon here is that the “appalled” expression is because Gurathin with his augments has clocked the fact SecUnit is about an inch shorter and has vellus hairs and is a little bit “WTF!”]

System Collapse:
but I have lots of feelings toward the imaginary humans on my media, and I am perfectly clear on the fact that those relationships are one-sided.

In System Collapse:
Then he sent me a note back: So, you may not know this, but I read your letter to Dr. Mensah, the one you sent when you left Port FreeCommerce. I think you’re absolutely the right person to write this.
The “he” is Ratthi
We already know that Pin-Lee read it in Exit Strategy:
Then she regrouped and continued, “I saw the goodbye message you sent her. It’s not like she didn’t realize that we’d fucked up the whole situation.
If Ratthi has read the “letter” and Pin-Lee has read the message then has Gurathin?
Is the letter/message the entirety of All Systems Red?
If it is—how much does reading it hurt Gurathin? Is that why he looks so appalled when he sees Murderbot again?
Also, what does he make of:
Gurathin was the only loner, but he seemed to like being with the others. He had a small, quiet smile, and they all seemed to like him.

A silly little meme for fans of the somewhat ambiguous relationship between it and its augmented human….
Tumblr media
I’m slightly concerned why SecUnit would tweet that in the first place—to be honest? Someone go check on it?
PS—it does like him really, deep down

“The SecUnit was scanning, checking for weapons on the humans in the transit station and for unauthorized comm and feed activity. I was too deep in the hotel feed for it to find me. (If I hadn’t been able to hide my feed activity from other SecUnits, I would have been spare parts a long time ago.)”
Record scratch, freeze-frame:
“Gurathin said, “With it offline, I was able to use HubSystem to get some access to its internal system and log. I wanted to explore some anomalies I’d noticed through the feed.” He gestured to me. “This unit was already a rogue. It has a hacked governor module.”

All Systems Red:
Gurathin hesitated. “It’s downloaded seven hundred hours of entertainment programming since we landed. Mostly serials. Mostly something called Sanctuary Moon.” He shook his head, dismissing it. “It’s probably using it to encode data for the company. It can’t be watching it, not in that volume; we’d notice.”
Tumblr media
Exit Strategy:
When the room’s feed signaled that they were at the door, I told it to open. I was in my best casual pose, and Sanctuary Moon was on the display surface. (I was actually redirecting the audio as chaff for a suspicious monitor that the hotel might be using to record inside the rooms, even though the booking agreement certified complete in-room privacy.)

Every time I read Exit Strategy…oh Gurathin, you’ve got to have so many mixed emotions about this construct

Summary:
There is a dramatized version of Bharadwaj’s documentary in the works—some people aren’t happy about the casting…
I imagine the actor they cast had been propelled to stardom via Cruel Romance Personage…but was actually genuinely talented and passionate about construct rights

Can I just say that I don’t understand Gurathin in All Systems Red [let alone followed by Exit Strategy and Fugitive Telemetry] if he isn’t in love with Murderbot
I like him
His life is kinda shit
He is adorable and also pitiful

Me: I think MB’s drones kinda fancy Gurathin?

A year ago, Murderbot had apparently been in IKEA
Tumblr media
I made a gesture in that direction that I had only seen in the shows that were rated high on the obscenity scale. Gurathin saw me and made a choking noise.
