Why handloom fabric will never go out of Style
With increased awareness of the fashion industry's negative impact on the environment, people have started to show a massive desire for handmade and hand-loomed items.
They realize the value and specialty handmade pieces bring to the table and in one's life. There is something special about handloom fabrics, it not only provides exclusive textiles, but the mastery of handloom fabrics is unique, authentic, and artistic.
The people behind creating this fabric have put significant effort, love, and passion into making these beautiful textiles.
So ever wondered what really are handloom fabrics?
What are handloom fabrics?
So, before learning about handloom fabrics, let us know what a loom is first.
A loom is a machine operated to weave cloth and tapestry. The primary purpose of any loom is to hold the warp threads under tension to stimulate the weft threads' interweaving to create a textile.
Tumblr media
Further, handloom fabrics are handwoven fabrics created on this weaving machine.
To create a handloom fabric, the weaver starts the process by interlacing a set of vertical threads(the warp) with a bunch of horizontal threads(the weft).
Then the loom holds the warp threads under tension to facilitate the interweaving of the weft threads over and above the warp using a weaving shuttle. Finally, the weaver repeats the interweaving process until the handloom fabric is created.
Handloom weaving requires the utmost patience, artistry, technical skills, and physical strength.
Creating handloom fabrics is not just about protecting nature but also about love. The weaver's passionate about what they are making, they put their heart and soul into creating this textile. They select the yarn, pattern, color, texture, and accurate technique to create the suitable fabric, and it's reflected on the material.
Tumblr media
Handloom fabrics don't feature just one type of fabric, instead, it comes in a variety of rich colors, patterns, and designs.
The reason handloom fabrics have wide varieties is that it's directly linked to the culture of each community. They have passed on their designs from generation to and formed an identity of their own.
Advantages of handloom fabrics:-
Originality and Uniqueness
The most significant advantage of handloom fabric is that no two hand-loomed materials are the same. Each fabric exhibits unique craftsmanship.
Variousness
As the handloom allows the weavers to explore their creativity in creating beautiful textiles, they explore new ideas and make some extravagant designs and patterns.
Quality
The fibers used to create handloom fabrics are high-quality natural fibers like cotton, linen, silk, and wool; these are environmentally friendly and long-lasting fabrics.
Good for the skin
The handlooms use natural fibers that protect the skin and don't harm it. In addition, it feels good on the skin, unlike synthetic fiber.
Skill preservation and source of livelihood
Since ancient times handloom has proved to be a great source of livelihood across rural India. Even today, the handloom community has preserved its heritage and employs numerous people.
Types of Handloom Fabrics:
Khadi: Khadi, the hand-spun fabric, referred to as the hope of our environment is a fabric known for our nation's freedom struggle, representing the love for our country and its people.
It is made by using natural fiber and is woven so that this fabric will keep the body cool during summer and warm during winter.
Kala Cotton: Kala Cotton is an organic woven textile that allows for sustainable living, as the production is purely ecological with no pesticides and synthetic fertilizers used. It is durable, strong, and stretchable, and it takes dye brilliantly
Tussar Silk: Tussar Silk is the strongest natural textile in the world. The fabric is highly breathable with high moisture-wicking abilities. Despite its immense tensile strength, its softness has made it a hotly desired commodity throughout history.
Mulberry: Mulberry silk is the highest quality silk that is smooth to the touch and has a glossy look. It is one of the oldest types of silk fabric that comes from moth cocoons.
What makes mulberry silk different from other silks is the uniform quality of the fibers. The diameter, color, and texture of a strand of mulberry silk are the same from one cocoon to another.
Muga Silk: Muga Silk follows the path of Ahimsa, meaning not causing harm to other living things. Therefore, this silk is produced without killing the creatures that crafted it. Instead, this silk is a step towards appreciating and supporting the beautiful soul and nature that created it.
Banana: Banana fabric is developed from the outer lining of banana peels. This fabric is one of the most luxurious fabrics. It is soft like silk on the inside and hard like cotton on the outside, making it one of the best fabrics to create comfortable, long-lasting, quality garments, decors, and accessories.
Organic Cotton: Organic cotton comes with various benefits for our environment and our people. For example, this fabric doesn't retain chemicals from its garments, due to which it reduces exposure to allergens and dermatological issues.
The use of organic cotton benefits the farmer as they are exposed to fewer chemicals.
There are so many benefits and types of handloom fabrics that they can never get out of style.

Tour de Fleece 2023
While I'm still spinning for the Tour de Femmes extra week, I thought I'd put my totals for main tour up here now :) @a-tour-de-fleece
Tumblr media
I completed seven projects (and made progress on several spindle projects as well). My completed spinning totaled 856g/ 1.9lb, and my finished skeins would measure 1405yd laid end to end, with yardage of individual plies totaling 3247yd. Individual project photos and totals below the cut!
Tumblr media
time for another adventure - 149yd/154g polwarth/silk/tweed Inglenook Bordeaux mirror-plied bulky rustic yarn. An experiment in thicker singles (some success, less evenness than I'd like) and my first time mirroring colors in a ply. surprised and enchanted by how the color turned out.
Tumblr media
transformation - 160yd/103g silk/rambouillet Fresh Lotus Designs silk lap plied to a Rambouillet singles -- this one was straight up a trans metaphor in the spinning. new and surprisingly challenging work (silk laps are a bitch to draft it turns out). gorgeous and worth it. stabilized when paired with work from my past (the rambo single came from deep stash). also it's pride colors c'mon.
Tumblr media
a long delayed dusk - 228yd/125g merino/silk/mohair/stellina home blended 2-ply DK yarn -- spun and plied entirely on the first challenge day. deep stash blended fiber I utterly failed to spin in 2019 (too many lengths!) but I achieved it now. @damnfool-of-a-took picked the colors in the first place and she still loves them
Tumblr media
underwater dreams - 294yd/100g Polwarth Cozy Hearth Yarn Works Island Time fractal 3-ply fingering yarn -- this is some of my dye work! it's not actually listed in the store bc I was trying for something else when I made it, but I did take notes so who knows, it may be listed someday. it turned out shockingly perfectly given this was absolutely the spin I zoned out on the most. literally my most even and exact and perfect yarn ever.
Tumblr media
as above so below - 199yd/150g BFL/merino/tencel/noil/angelina Ajem Fiber Arts Nebula & High Tide marled woolen aran yarn -- made me fall in love with batts again. SO fluffy and fun to spin! and this kind of color busyness is more my speed <3
Tumblr media
berries ripen in the gold - 72yd/134g BFL/muga silk Fresh Lotus Designs home blended thick and thin yarn -- my first blending board rolag project in a long while. next time I'll load less on each board, as these were tricky to draft and the spinning suffered for it, but I'm still really happy with the colors, and since it was a gift for my wife and she loves it, that's good enough :)
Tumblr media
the cool refreshing taste of being yourself - 303yd/151g Merino/tussah/flax Inglenook Cucumber z-plied 3-ply light worsted yarn -- it's a traditional 3-ply but backwards. it's the basic three fiber types drenched in a snazzy dye bath. it's absolutely being used for witchcraft.

Monster March 2023 Day 17- Drider
Tumblr media
Ok, so I was watching this documentary about how they were trying to "milk" spiders for their silk to test it and try to synthasize it for various purposes, like kevlar vests and such. And they basically had to hold the spider down, give it a food item and then very carefully pull this strand of silk from them while they ate.
So you take that, add it to what we already know about mulberry and muga silk and of course silk brocade where the pattern is woven right into the fabric itself. Add in a fantasy setting, and a love story and a pinch of smut, viola.
As always, thanks to @borealwrites for their Monster March 2023 prompt list. Enjoy.
Monster March 2023 Day 17- Drider
Silk Brocade
You took a few calming breaths and tried to put the morning events and developments out of your head, because if you walked into Xuni’s house like this, it could not only ruin your day, but potentially ruin everything. So you tried to bury all your worry and anxiety down, put your shoulders back and put on a pleasant smile and just…try to act like today was just another day.
Just another day of caring for your best friend in the world. Xuni, who was a sapphire blue tarantula drider, who you were not only friends with, and had known your entire life, but who you were charged with to be his one and only caretaker and his Silk Milker. And you really needed him to make special silk for you today and you hoped he would eat and then produce the silk you would need.
“Miss Kuvari?” The driver of your carriage asked as he noticed you took your step out of the carriage, marked with Xuni’s special banner so that you could move throughout the country, but specifically get from The Drider District to The Garment District which was the next district over.
But here you stood, still holding his breakfast feast on the large platter with a death grip so that our knuckles were practically all white as you were somehow nervous and scared about taking another step towards his lovely home. One that you had grown accustomed and familiar with as much as your own childhood one. And one that you now wished could be your own instead of…
“I’m fine, thank you.” You thanked the driver before you dug down deep and demanded your feet to move, to just take a step forward, one after another before your steps soon hurried because not only was Xuni’s breakfast meal late, but probably getting cold and you knew you would probably have to take it apart to reheat the hot parts and rechill the fruits and other cold items.
The door was still cracked open, just the way you had left it when you were here first thing this morning and asking Xuni what he wanted for breakfast. So all you had to do was turn and go through the door back first. It hadn’t been that long since you were here, but somehow, it felt like a small eternity in just a couple of short hours. Because so much had changed and was about to change.
“I’m back with breakfast Xuni” You greeted your drider Silk Spinner as you came into his estate with his breakfast on a large platter in your hands.
“Thank you, Kuvari.” He greeted back as he came out of his nest and took the offering today and put it on his high table before he carefully set his large spider body in its usual place that served as both bed and chair for him and his special body so that his person could be attended to.
“Ah, I take it we are hoping for violet silk today?” He guessed as he looked over the various fruits artfully arranged around his usual meal once he took the cover off.  Driders could use the foods they ate to affect the silk they could be spun.
“With a green sheen if you can manage it. But if not, anything in the purple family would be most appreciated today.” You specified before you set out grooming him as per your usual routine as you got out your special tote that had all your supplies as you climbed up onto his back before you started brushing out and then rebraiding his hair, then scratching and then brushing out the soft velvety fur of his back with a traditional drider fur brush, with special bristles that would get down to the skin and clean from the skin, through the fur- and up. Using special brushes to brush out the fine fur that covered his body while using a special spray that cleaned and conditioned the skin and hairs before adding another that would give his coat extra lustrous shine.
Drider Silk Spinners of Dorierra were very well cared for. And their silk, was the best in the world. It was glossy, shiny and satiny and depending on what the drider was fed could be made from the very spinnerette into a variety of colors with special sheens, no dyeing needed. And of course the driders themselves, besides having their choice of potential mates per mating season, and having any and every food stuff possibly and provided along with a host of servants to care for any and every need, want and desire they had.
Because drider silk brocade was always the most coveted material used in gowns and official ceremonial garments and the highest of fashions in all the other quarters. And a good Silk Milker could get at least a few hundred yards of a single strand in a day, provided the drider was ready, willing and able to provide said silk. A good Silk Milker could make sure that the entire strand of silk was perfectly consistent and that the thickness, fineness, strength and color and any properties of the silk itself was always consistent through the entire single strand. And this was something that you and your family had been doing for generations and your drider was the grandson of your grandmother’s drider and your mother was the silk spinner for Xuni’s father. And you considered it a great honor for Xuni to pick you. Not just as his Silk Milker but also as his his personal caretaker. So that meant double the workload but more than double the salary. Because many driders often wanted the silk milker and the personal caretaker to be the same person as they were particular about who they liked and who they would work with and work best with.
Xuni was happy to hire you to attend to him personally because of how kind, considerate, courteous and conscientious you were about driders, their needs and comfort, considering that’s what your parents had always done and raised and trained you and your siblings for the same work. And when he got to choose which person he wanted as his personal attendant and his silk milker, he chose you for both. And only you- when he was selecting from a pool of potential caretakers and silk milkers once he had reached maturity to leave his mother’s home and have a home of his own. Granted it wasn’t as big as his mother’s since bachelor driders didn’t need to really have the large family homes that the females did, nor did they need as many servants because female driders often needed more attendants, to not only feed them, care for them, but also help deliver then guard and care for the clutches of eggs too.
The High Councilors were always eager to show off any drider silk brocade, with the weaving houses and the designers always pushing the limits of functionality and beauty with their garments and intricacy of the design and vibrancy of colors and Xuni was fortunate in that his silk was some of the best in the country as far as you were concerned. And every clothing house and designer were eager to bid for his silk every day, while many were working on particular projects, many designers were looking for very specific shades of drider silk and properties of the silk depending on the current project. And it was getting into spring so of course the more vibrant colors were coming into fashion.
You were happy and content to serve as his attendant and caretaker and carefully help him spin the best silk possible on a special loom right in his house and while he wasn’t the largest producer, as far as volume of silk, the quality of the silk he did produce was the best, and in your opinion, that’s what mattered, quality, not quantity. Because if you overworked a drider, and had them spin as much silk as possible, you’d run them dry and the quality of the silk would always go down the longer the strand was. Which is why you always spun an amount that was comfortable for Xuni to give and wouldn’t tire him out too quickly, and the quality of the silk from beginning to end was always the same.
Now granted, his salary as a resident drider did afford for you to have helpers outside of his home, meaning you could have a carriage of your own that brought you to the kitchens so that the meals ordered would suit his moods and tastes and give the best possible results in the silk. And the carriage offered you a short ride to hand deliver his silk that you spun from him straight to the garment district where the various artisans would happily pay top dollar for it to use in their various creations for whoever they were making garments for.
And said money would then be considered profit and usually elevated both the drider and the milker and caretaker. You could afford to pay your coachmen very well, and even pass off extra tips to the cooks in the kitchens to make sure that the quality of Xuni’s food was the best possible. And you could then artfully add whatever you wanted from the available produce since you knew what driders needed to eat to gain certain colors in their silk while also pleasing their palates according to their individual tastes. And because you were his sole caretaker, it meant that Xuni and yourself had a special bond and a close friendship as he made sure to order more food than he really needed to eat to supplement your own diet. Your own set of elite uniforms were both functional yet beautiful as you had a range to suit the weather. You always chose to wear the same vibrant sapphire blue that his fur was naturally in- so that everyone knew that you were Xuni’s personal caretaker as the uniform itself could be altered to show who each attendant worked for based on how they usually wore and then personalized the traditional black and white uniform. Which was something you took immense pride and joy in doing. Because Xuni was a very personable and very sweet drider, at least to you.
Because to him, you were so much more than his official caretaker, you were his friend and confidant. And someone he had absolute faith and trust in. And enjoyed candid conversation and enjoyed your company over even those among his own family and other friends.
However, because he was so good, that meant that Dorierra was searching far and wide for a mate who would be suitable for him to sire her clutches, and be able to give him offspring with the same qualities to their silk that he had to his. And you got to meet said driders and their caretakers just this morning, thus your apprehension this morning.
Because so far, every introduction did not go according to plan. Because usually the non native Dorierran driders did not like the feeling or notion of being ‘pets’ to be fed and then milked for their silk. To many non native driders, it could be seen as an insult to their dignity and they were made to feel more like cattle than autonomous people.
But this latest batch of driders and caretakers, were the opposite, instead of being viewed as pets, they were expecting to be treated like gods or goddesses, practically worshiped, pampered to an extreme in order to get their precious silk. And this morning for breakfast had been especially hard to see the new batch of caretakers demand the best of the best as far as ingredients and amounts of ingredients for their new and very special driders and practically took out the whole supplemental buffet, which meant it had to be refilled- twice before everyone else could get a chance to get the breakfast they had to wait to even get their orders into the kitchens for. Which put everyone, including yourself, behind schedule.
But you refused to rush Xuni. Because rushing a drider was a sure way to get the worst and most unusable silk. You knew you’d be getting to the garment district late and you knew you’d be getting to bed later. But that was your problem to deal with. Not Xuni’s.
Dorierran driders though, were always fed the best food and had houses that looked like any other in the country on the outside, but were large but rather bare with only plumbing, a small kitchenette for the caretaker to reheat or rechill whatever foods were brought to them. As well as heating and the ability to keep the house as dry or as humid as the drider who occupied it wanted it to be. The houses themselves were engineered so that they would both be spacious yet cozy and the drider could make their home however they wanted it to be, including, where they wanted to eat, be groomed and then milked for their silk onto a special loom. They could spin their own nest how they wanted it indoors in whatever corner or area of the house they wanted. Some liked the bottom corners, some liked the top and their special feet meant they could climb the walls and the ceilings to get to said nests.
But after "officially" working with Xuni for only a year, the two of you had become quite good and close friends, even when you didn’t have to be ‘servant and master’. Although the argument that both of you were servants for the state, could be made.
You smiled bittersweetly when his body relaxed completely as you carefully and meticulously cleaned and cared for his physical body as he leisurely ate before he noticed you were unusually quiet. Usually you were halfway through telling him the latest news in the various quarters by now.
“Kuvari?” He asked when he paused eating and noticed you were practically preening the hair covering his abdomen and the designs in the fur on it.
“Hmm?” You asked when you paused to look up at him.
“What’s wrong? Why are you so quiet?” He asked.
“Oh, it’s uh, this silk. If it’s possible that you’re able to give it, it means you’ll be fed and milked that much more and I don’t want to run you dry or have you ever be overworked.” You deflected as you focused back on the beautiful pattern of his fur.
“If the silk was that important you’d be working on the spinnerets then up my body from there. You’ve been working from head down. And that’s the third time you’ve made sure the pattern of fur on my body is laying just right. What’s really going on?” He discerned.
“Another group of driders came into the quarter this morning. They all have naturally dual chroming sheening silk and are being given the VIP treatment. Which was why your own breakfast was as late getting to you as it was. I know that you’re capable of it too with the right balance of foods. But, right now, they’re practically being overstuffed and the tester driders are being prepped for a courting ritual, and if the females kill and eat the males or vice versa, even when they’re practically being gorged themselves, then, we’re down more driders. But if they succeed, you and every other great silk spinner are going to be pulled to breed with them. They’re even testing out aphrodisiacs to help keep you and the others alive. Because driders very rarely co-parent. A mother will lay and then guard her clutch of eggs. And even guard the little spiderlings once they do hatch. But, I just don’t want them to get depressed or you to get depressed when such things may or may not happen, because it’s still a 50/50 chance of it going either way. So I was told- first thing this morning, to prep you just in case but not say anything for fear you’d get too anxious and nervous and not spin any silk at all.” You murmured so quietly he had to practically bend over backwards to get close enough to hear you.
“Well, we’ve been through this before. And you know I’m capable of taking care of myself when a female is unreceptive and would rather kill me and eat me rather than mate with me.” Xuni offered as he studied your face and body language closely as you picked the stray hairs he had shed out of the brush.
“Yeah, I know.” You nodded with a forced smile that didn’t meet your eyes before you looked back down at the brush and began looking for more hairs to pick out of it rather than look up into his big gorgeous eyes.
“So something else is going on, usually you’re not this heavy hearted about this sort of thing.” He noted.
“More than just you and your future are riding on this. It’s mine too. It’s been proven that male driders do best if they have a female caretaker. And vice versa. And if any of the females will take you, it means that their male caretakers or silk milkers, can get to be my betrothed.…and I’m hesitant and reluctant about that. I mean, granted that’s how most marriages between the caretakers and silk milkers to driders happen. I mean, look at my parents. That’s what happened to them, and they’re happy… now. But growing up with this, I just…I’m nervous and anxious about it. Way more than you are and that’s not right or fair for you to feed off of my own anxiousness and nervousness, when it might not end up being a thing, at all. And I feel so stupid for worrying about this and thinking that I’m worrying about nothing. But…” You trailed off before you sunk down in the stool and just put the tools in your lap to hold your face in your hands as you couldn’t help but start to cry as you tried to stifle it all up and were failing miserably.
“But what?” He asked as he moved himself to practically lay his spider body down on the floor to keep his human torso up and as close to you as possible as he pet down your long brown hair and your arms and shoulders and ducked his head to catch your eye again.
“I just have a bad gut feeling about it and I can’t explain why I feel that way. Like at any moment, everything I’ve grown used to and accustomed to is going to change. And you’re more than just my charge, you’re my friend. My best friend in the whole world. And I can’t lose that. I don’t want to lose that. And I would miss being done with my shift and going all over the quarter and even the other city centers with you. And I would miss hanging out with you when I’m not working with you. And now I feel like I won’t be able to do any of that anymore. And it makes me so sad and I feel so panicked about it. Cause even if I somehow end up fucking up this job so bad, I get fired. We’d still be friends right?” You asked.
“Absolutely. Probably better friends cause we won’t have work to deal with honestly.” Xuni admitted.
“And I feel the same way! I feel like if I got fired right now, it would be ok. Because I’d still have you and I would be ok. Because we have always been friends first and we practically grew up together. But yet, here I am, supposed to be prepping you and have already spent my whole life preparing myself for this moment. And now that the moment is here, I can’t help but feel like it’s all wrong and like I’m in danger. Even though I know I’m not, and I know you’d always protect me as much as I watch out for you and try to keep you safe and well cared for at all times, even if I wasn’t your personal caretaker. I just can’t shake the feeling that there’s this huge wedge that’s just hovering over me, ready to tear us apart and I don’t want that.” You insisted.
“Neither do I.” Xuni readily agreed as he got closer and closer until he was practically holding you and consoling you.
“But you’re still a drider and your relationship with me should not get in the way of you doing what you want to do and need to do, whatever those things are or need to be. And I don’t want to be an overprotective, over possessive caretaker where no one is good enough for you. Even though it’s really hard not to feel that way. Especially when I got to look at those new driders. They were the most pampered, spoiled brats, ordering everyone around like they own the place. And their caretakers are even worse than they are!” You explained.
“But that might just be me and putting my nose where it doesn’t belong and you may meet them and see the driders who you want to mother every clutch of eggs ever. And I don’t want my bad first impression- to taint that or sway your own experience and your own future or whatever. Because even though it’s all supposed to be such a natural thing. If not the most natural thing in the world. Because I understand that to most driders, sex is just sex and there’s little to no emotional attachment with it. And I get that. And I don’t judge you or any other for any of that. That’s just nature, right?” You asked.
“Well, not always, there are some that like the emotional attachment and the whole, committed monogamous relationship thing.” Xuni admitted as the skin of his face blushed a violet blue, making the soft velvet fur almost purple.
“And if you’re that type of drider, I need to get out of the way so you can be that and do that with the lucky girl.” You said but your tears only streamed down your cheeks like rivers as your heart broke because of course the most wonderful, sweetest, most romantic and gentle, amazing drider in the whole country would be that kind of drider.
“Oh, no, I’m not looking for that- in another drider.” Xuni corrected sheepishly.
“Oh, well, then by all means, if you find anyone who you want to be that way with, then you should say so and tell me so you can do so.” You implored him.
“Ok. I will.” He promised.
“Thank you. But even with all of that, one look at those new caretakers practically sent me running the other way. Because I know that driders are predators. But those caretakers were even more predatory than I’ve seen any other being -be. And part of me wants to beg for you to spin me a nest in here so I can just move in here with you to just be your permanent friend, roommate and caretaker, whatever we want or need to call it. Because all of my siblings have already paired up and they’re all having kids and my parents are pushing me to get a mate and have a family of my own and I look at the other caretakers and I…I don’t like any of them like that and I’m not attracted to them like that.” You confessed as Xuni seemed to take a breath of relief to learn that.
“And when I met the other caretakers this morning as I was getting you your morning feast and it was just…awful. And when they weren’t taking everything they could get their hands on- they were already talking about who the most highly paid silk milkers and personal caretakers were. And which ones were still single and where potential houses would be and how lavishly they could live and demand high salaries yet work their driders dry every day. And then to have them look me up and down and weigh and measure me by my elite uniform thinking I have some grand estate and I might as well be a moura bride myself, and able to turn your silk gold, which some of the moura servants can and do. And I don’t want them to look at me and what I’ve managed to save up for myself thinking that I’ve made myself my own dowry in my own bank account and that once they can woo me all that I’ve worked so hard all my life to build for myself, I’ll just hand it over to them to squander however their whims will please them. They refused to even wear the basic uniform, they were complaining about how the elite uniforms weren’t fine enough! What more could they possibly want? The gowns and robes we make for the Grand Councilors themselves?! How am I ever supposed to trade any of that for you? I can’t. I just can’t. I refuse.” You wept.
“I do too. I refuse to let you go to those assholes either. I’ll kill them myself if I have to.” Xuni offered.
“Thank you.” You thanked him. As you smiled at the thought.
“But I was told that starting now, I’m supposed to act like this is just another regular day and act like nothing is wrong. And I’m failing spectacularly.” You admitted as he just hugged you tighter and rubbed soothing circles into your back.
“No, you’re telling me what’s wrong. And I’m relieved that you trust me enough to tell me this in the first place.” Xuni offered.
“You’ve always had my trust and my faith. Xuni, I don’t think you could ever do anything that would ever make me doubt you, not for a moment.” You reassured him as you were happy to find the comfort you so desperately needed in his arms.
And what I would give just to be a live in caretaker like some of the others are. I will still spin your silk and any other driders silk I have to do so. I will build whatever looms and thread them myself if I must. I just don’t want to be betrothed to a man who would ever mistreat me, let alone one who isn’t even Dorierran. Who doesn’t even speak the same language or have the same culture as me or the same values and who may not even know or care to know my name until our wedding vows and won’t care what kind of person I am, as long as I hold up my end of the bargain and work until my hands are cracked and bleeding and you are run dry.” You worried.
“And we’re supposed to have kids and raise them to be what we are, drider caretakers to take care of all of the children of the drider community. And even that notion of being resistant to that doesn’t make sense because Dorierra is one big bride system. Where every woman, high and low is expected to be ready and willing to do whatever it takes to be successful, no matter the price or cost especially to herself if it betters the whole. But I can’t let my own personal feelings sway you or yours either. Because it’s not my place and you’re my responsibility and I’m happy right where I am and I’m happy with what I do and I don’t want that to change.” You confessed as he wrapped his strong arms around you and hugged you even more tightly as you hugged him back just as tightly as you nuzzled your face into his effer velvety soft fur.
“I'm happy that you’re happy here. I will mate with whoever I have to but if you are not comfortable or not happy to be betrothed to any other, then be betrothed to me.” He offered.
But you could have sworn you didn’t hear him right.
“What?” You asked.
“Marry me. Be betrothed to me. I’ve always been yours Kuvari. Even if you take me just to avoid them, then so be it, but I want you. I love you. And I won’t stop loving you. And the thought of any other trying to court you sends me into a panic. Your happiness is more important than anything and your love is more precious to me than the air I breathe or the food I eat or the roof over my head. That whole committed, monogamous relationship thing, I want that- but only with you, no one else. You’re not in the way, you are the way to that marital happiness.” He professed as your tears dried up but you just stared in shock at him.
“If you don’t like my current nest, then I will spin you - your own nest here, I will have you move in immediately, or as soon as you’d want to. I won’t let any other than you spin my silk ok? To hell with anyone or everyone else. Hell, I’ll help you build the looms and thread them too if I have to, or hell, you can ride on my back and I’ll just take us right out of here today if they really want to push it.” He offered.
“But where else would we even go? I’m not pure enough moura, I can’t make gold. And the closest drider kingdom is already months away and we would never have the time to prepare ourselves or anything to pull something like that off.” You tearfully reminded him before he pulled his hands and framed your face with them.
“Do you love me?” He asked.
“Yes, more than anyone or anything.” You confirmed.
“Good because I love you more than anything and everyone else. Second, do you trust me?” He asked before you nodded before he kissed you so tenderly yet passionately and lovingly all the same.
“Then that’s enough and all we need. Drider silk is still drider silk and you’re still a silk milker and caretaker. The best in all of Dorierra and beyond. We’ll get by. I’m sure any colony would still open their doors to us and I can eat whatever I need to- to make any color you need or want ok?” He offered before he quickly left and went over to his nest and brought you a special sweater like vest he had spinning and weaving and knitting himself. It had every color of silk he had ever spun, woven together to make a yarn and then that yarn knitted so that there was a pattern to it once it was all put together where it was your name and his name woven together.
“This is so beautiful Xuni.” You praised.
“I’m happy you like it, I obviously made it for you. And I have been trying to work up the courage to say something or do something, at least, until I was sure you could and would feel the same way. But now is as good a time as any I suppose. But I only want you to wear it. It’s my courting gift to you.” He insisted.
“Thank you, I love it!” You smiled happily before you put it on, every bad feeling and notion of impending doom vanishing the moment you did. You loved Xuni and Xuni loved you. And now today, it really wasn’t like any other. It was suddenly the best day ever.
“I have been making additions and improvements to my own nest so that we can share it together. But I’ll build you a new one if it’s not good enough. That’s why I moved my nest from the upper corner to the lower one, so you could get in and out of it easier but I still have the upper just in case any other were to try to come and take you away from me, I’ll put you in it to keep you safe before I would kill them myself.” He insisted.
“Oh Xuni.” You cooed as you kissed him soundly and hugged him tightly again and just savored the feeling of the divine sweater being wrapped around you and it’s silky softness giving you a constant reassurance of his love and affection for you as he was happy to be kissing you soundly and happily all the same. To hell with the usual routine. You didn’t care if he didn’t even spin you an inch of silk today.
“So, come one breakfast, tell me everything.” He urged you as he picked you up and placed you in the special seat you usually sat in when you would share your private meals together.
“So, the first female drider, she’s pink…” You began as you began to tell him all about the other driders you saw that morning, coming in as simply options for him to consider if and when it came to that.
He had always made sure to leave plenty of food on his platter so that you’d be able to eat more than your fill of a good and proper breakfast and once you were done, you made quick work of finishing up his personal brushing before attending to his spinnerets and got the loom ready to receive his silk.
And then it was his turn to tell you how he wanted to improve the house to accommodate you and have every facility and every comfort possible which made you happy to hear him be so happy and excited about all the possibilities as you continued on with your usual routine but mentally, you were already knowing exactly what you were going to pack from your servant’s quarters to move in here with Xuni tonight, everyone and everything else be damned.
Xuni gave you the best silk yet. It was the perfect raspberry violet with a bright green metallic sheen to it.
You proudly wore his special sweater as you returned the now finished platter to the kitchens and informed your headmaster of the new arrangement of you being a live in domestic partner and caretaker and silk milker for Xuni.
And you were shocked when they were perfectly ok with it and if anything, had guessed that it was going to be your request, as you were not the first, nor the last to ask this today. As it seemed almost all of the other single silk milkers had caretakers had overheard the same conversations and had gotten the same impressions you had and they were already reassigning many over to their drider’s homes as you were then classed as a ‘paired to drider and the job’. So that you were technically married to your drider and your work with him and only him. Which wasn’t unusual for the quarter as you then got another raise. And your accounts got to be both joint yet separate. He would still manage his own income and profit from his silk. And you would still manage your own accounts, but that, if need or want - could be joined and money could easily be transferred from one to another.
But it came with the understanding that your drider would still make honest and genuine attempts to breed with other drider females- and heir clutches of eggs. But that if you ever did find another you wanted to share a “traditional” home and marriage with, that- that could be arranged and changed as well. But you sincerely doubted that would ever be an issue since Xuni seemed receptive to heiring clutches but it would only be a physical act of sex and nothing more, at least on his part.
You were so happy when you were not the only one cleaning out your bunk and bedroom at the servant’s quarters that evening, many of the other caretakers, wearing something similar you were, as their own driders had come to escort them and their belongings back to their own homes themselves as you were happy to ride Xuni while your trunk and luggage was in the carriage behind him as his house was already under construction to accommodate you and your needs and wants as you were happy you both could afford to do this to his home. And it wouldn’t be a financial burden or an inconvenience or something either of you would have to “work off” either.
No sooner had you done that, was when the new drider caretakers got to move into your own rooms and quarters.
You could tell many of them were not pleased with their “meager” accommodations. And you weren’t the least surprised when instead of them looking at you with desire from getting breakfast that day, to now all of you in the kitchens, getting your evening feasts, as they now looked at you with resentment and disdain and jealousy. Which you were ever grateful for Xuni from saving you from.
“So? How was it?” Xuni asked once you returned from the kitchens with an extra large and lavish feast for you both to share as he had been rearranging his home to better suit and accommodate you as his permanent live in caretaker and mate as you were happy to finally get out of the uniform and be “done” for the day, happy to slip into a silk nightgown you had bought that day, when you bought yourself a ‘married to the job’ ring and one for Xuni to wear too, which he was happy and pleased to wear too and was looking ready and eager to "devour" you as much as the feast as he had you rest in his embrace to eat.
“Ooph, I’m surprised I didn’t burst into flames! They all practically stared daggers into the back of my head. And they were upset that the information they had gotten about the single silk milkers turned out to be “unreliable” since apparently they had paid a lot of money for such information so that they would only “seduce the richest milkers for their dowries”.” You informed him with an exaggerated eye roll while you happily ate from the same large platter as he did.
“What barbarians.” Xuni chuckled.
“Oh I know. Thank you though, for this and for saving me from them and from…” You began to thank him before he reached over and simply kissed you sweetly and then deeply before any thought of finishing what was technically your wedding feast, was practically forgotten as he gathered you up into his arms and walked you to your new bed, that he had worked extra hard in making sure it would be as soft, and as warm and comfortable as you would ever want it to be before you practically slipped out of your nightgown only to have him make love to you, so, so softly and lovingly. He’s made blankets, pillows, with your initials and his, intertwined and embroidered with his own “extra silk”. It’s all perfect. And then he showed you an array of garments he’s used his own silk brocade loom to make. Granted it’s the starter brocade loom that most are given to first learn on and while it’s not as big or as intricate as others, it’s perfectly capable of making silk brocade. And there is a timeless elegance to every piece and each one feels divine to wear and so comfortable. And he’s made you silken undergarments and lingerie that is downright heavenly and you feel so sexy wearing it, that is, when he isn’t taking it off of you the moment you’ve put it on to show it fits. But now you can’t imagine ever wearing anything other than his silk. As simple or as fancy as your heart desires. And he’s made you- your very own “uniform” with golden embroidery with your initials and his on the trim and in the belt at your waist. And even a closet full of special gowns to wear when you want to go out and have nights out on the town or go to festivals and cisoras.

Is organic cotton the future of sustainable development?
With the increase in climate change and global warming, each step taken by us matters, be it even by transforming our cotton closet into an organic cotton closet.
We are living in a time, where each step will either lead to an immense increase in global warming or will lead to the protection of Mother Earth. So why not make our actions count and take a step by protecting our nature by switching to organic clothing?!
As we know, the fashion industry is one of the largest industries of today, in which cotton textiles lead the line together with cotton manufacturing setting them as the highest-ranked in the fashion industry. These pieces of regular cotton constructed into garments lead to 88% more wastage of water from our resources.
Whereas Organic Cotton which has been made from natural seeds and handpicked to maintain the purity of fibers; uses 1,982 fewer gallons of water compared to regular cotton.
Gallons of water used by:
Regular cotton: 2168 gallons
Organic Cotton: 186 gallons
Due to the increase in market size of the fashion industry every year along with the cotton industry; regular cotton is handpicked by workers to keep up with the increase in demand for regular cotton and because these crops are handpicked it leads to various damages and crises such as:
Damage of fibers: As regular cotton is grown as mono-crop it destroys the soil quality, which exceeds the damage when handpicked by the farmers, leading to the destruction of fibers because of the speed and time limit ordered.
Damage to crops: Regular cotton leads to damage to crops when it is handpicked, as not much attention is paid while plucking it in bulk, due to which all the effort, time, and resources used to cultivate the crops drain out to zero.
Water wastage: The amount of clean water being depleted to produce regular cotton is extreme which might lead to a water crisis. The Clean water when used for manufacturing turns into toxic water that is disposed into freshwater bodies, causing a hazardous impact on the people deprived of this natural resource.
Wastage of resources: When all the above-mentioned factors are ignored by the manufacturers and the farmers, it directly leads to the waste of resources, as the number of resources used to produce regular cotton is way high in number when compared to the results in the end.
Regular cotton along with these damages also demands to use of chemical dyes for their further process, which is not only harmful to our bodies but is also very dangerous to the workers exposed to it, as these chemicals lead to many health problems like earring aids, lunch cancer, skin cancer, eczema and many more, other than that people can also lose their lives when exposed to these chemicals for long other than people can also lose their lives when exposed to these chemicals for long.

7/1/22 Tour de Fleece
I wasn't planning on getting any spinning done yesterday but ended up having just enough time to spin and ply a quick sample:
Tumblr media
The fiber is half baby camel and half muga silk, making it wonderfully soft and surprisingly strong. I'm spinning it to make a bandana cowl for my partner to wear on the PCT. Therefore, it needs to be warm, durable, lightweight, and soft, in that order. The bandana cowl that my partner likes is crocheted out of bulky Imperial Ranch wool, but if I remember correctly the pattern called for worsted, so I can probably get away with a finer yarn. It's also the kind of pattern that's really just instructions to make a shape, so you can fill that shape with any gauge you like.
The above sample is cabled (4 ply) which did sacrifice more loft and softness than I'd like. Even with 4 plys it's only a heavy fingering really* and I want something thicker for what I have in mind**. I'm considering switching to my Turkish spindle since it's heavier and will encourage me to spin thicker and I can make lots of turtles to ply from. The problem is that I don't really love spinning on my Turkish spindle (I'm spoiled and prefer a hook to a half hitch), but it'll be a chance for me to get better and I have other options if I really can't handle it.
