Joel had never been gentle with you. Not with your feelings and never with your body. He was rough in every way with you. The way his calloused fingertips held your neck in place as he’d fucked you was rough. And afterward, the way he told you he was leaving, with no emotion behind his dark eyes or regard for your tears, was rough. The worst part was the burning embarrassment at the thought that despite all of the coldness Joel showed you… maybe you’d meant something to him.
“Cargo?!” You’d yelled, trying to not feel like any more of an idiot as you hobbled around, pulling your jeans back on, “What the fuck are you talking about?”
“I have to.” He stood from the mattress, “Tess and I…”
The knife in your gut twisted again. Tess. You didn’t need to hear the rest of his explanation. With Tess going, you now knew that you weren’t part of their team. That they’d never seen you as their equal, because what, you were younger? You’d always seen it as an advantage, being quick and agile, less memories of a time before this life… less baggage. Evidently, that wasn’t the way the two of them had seen you. Perhaps you were only kept around this long for Joel to take his pent-up aggression out on.
Shame washed over as you realized you’d take that over being alone. Letting Joel use you in his own selfish way was better than no Joel at all. But now he was done.
“Stop,” he sighed, he could see you spiraling, full of hatred for both him and yourself.
“Just go then.” You stood in front of him with arms crossed. What you really meant was “stay.” With wet eyes, you silently pleaded with him to not listen to you.
But he did. Without another word or even a moment of eye contact, he was out the door and out of your life, leaving you to crumble in your loneliness.
