its so weird seeing posts that mock uncle jim for worrying about li ming's queerness as though his dead boyfriend's parents (legally) stealing his entire life savings and leaving him to manage a restaurant business specifically because gay couples aren't legally recognized as couples wasn't what put him in a cycle of crushing debt and endless poverty in the first place

#yeah hi CONTEXT MATTERS #can western fandom pls stop ignoring this shows biting social commentary on queer people not being legally recognized #also heart is the darling of all time BUT his careless lie literally forced li ming to work off a debt that was never his #and wouldve seriously impacted jim's business and financial state had wen not offered to work free #which was a boon but having to live on someone elses generosity like that is still a stress #because people (understandably!!!!) can and do get tired of giving away a lot of time and energy for nothing #wen is uncommonly generous and luckily its not too long before other circumstances help lift jim to safer footing #but none of that was SECURE getting to that point #jim is right to worry! it comes out badly and li ming's queerness is not the actual issue but jims reasoning is EXTREMELY UNDERSTANDABLE #sighs #moonlight chicken

Good Omens season 2 referencing Powell & Pressburger films

Crowley's angel hair is modeled after Kim Hunter's hair as June in A Matter of Life and Death (1946).

Maggie's shop is called The Small Back Room in reference to 1949's The Small Back Room.

The red ballet shoes on the door of Give Me Coffee or Give Me Death are a nod to The Red Shoes (1948). (Note : the klaxons sounding in Heaven at the end of episode 1 are said to be a nod to the alarm bells in The Other World in A Matter of Life and Death. Personally, I don't think they sound at all alike; they are only similar in both being alarms. Plus, it's an audio reference, which I don't have the skill or patience to include here. But it's there!)

In The Small Back Room, Maggie has a poster for the film Stairway to Heaven displayed. A Matter of Life and Death was released under this title in the US.

The tartan hills welcoming Aziraphale to Scotland are a reference to the tartan hills welcoming Joan to Scotland in I Know Where I'm Going! (1945). And of course, the third episode is itself titled "I Know Where I'm Going."

Jim drops the book My Best Games of Chess, 1924-1937, by Alexander Alekhine, onto a table in the bookshop repeatedly as he is discovering how gravity works. This book is featured prominently in A Matter of Life and Death.

When Aziraphale enters The Resurrectionist pub in Edinburgh, I Know Where I'm Going! is playing on both televisions (I'm pretty sure I found the right scene to match this screenshot). You can also make out the name 'Pressburger' on one of the posters in this screenshot, but we'll get to that later. . .

The family name on the mausoleum where Aziraphale and Crowley hide out with Elspeth and Wee Morag is Archers. It's never clearly seen in the show, but it can be seen in this BTS photo of the model used for Crowley's embiggening. The Archers was the name of Powell and Pressburger's production company. The interior of the tomb and the urns outside the full-size set also reference the Archers, and Powell & Pressburger individually.

In Mr. Arnold's record shop, one of the posters on the wall is for a UK music tour; either the band or the tour is titled Met By Moonlight. This is referencing Ill Met By Moonlight (1957), the final film Powell & Pressburger made together. (I personally think this one is a reach, as the title of the film is a line from A Midsummer Night's Dream and thus not really clockable to the outside viewer as a direct Archers reference, but apparently the intent was there so we're counting it!)

The Pressburger posters are more clearly visible during the Gabriel and Beelzebub rendezvous scene in The Resurrectionists pub. We can see they advertise 'Pressburger Scottish Lager,' which is of course a nod to Emeric Pressburger himself. (Unclear if Michael Powell has his own label that we just don't get a clear view of. . .)

I think the thing that fucks me up more about Lister’s dream is the hug that comes just before the kiss.

like the kiss moment itself is a tad awkward and it was probably kind of meant to be and it’s played a little silly for the dream sequence as they just smush their faces together (and also that puckering of Rimmer’s lips as they lean in lmao)

But I mean it makes me feral anyway bc I can’t believe they did that at all and I love the implication much later in Red Dwarf that dreams and hallucinations etc create their own universes so Somewhere out there there’s at least one universe where that moment was real and they’re fully canon somewhere;;;

But anyway the moment immediately before the kiss even happens gets me every time.

Like they’ve just said they both miss each other and the emotional weight of the moment becomes too much so Lister gets up and pulls Rimmer into a hug and Rimmer’s face destroys me bc it’s very much that ‘oh god…I’m finally home’ kind of hug.

Like he looks a little overwhelmed immediately, like all the air’s been knocked out of him by this first touch with Lister since that last goodbye hug in Stoke Me A Clipper. A hug itself is a kind of comfort he probably hasn’t experienced much of in the first place and certainly not one with as much emotional weight to it. The knowledge that someone missed him, that Lister missed him!! And the little sway they do in the hug, and the way Rimmer’s face softens hearing Lister tell him not to leave ever again. It makes my heart burst;;;

#Red dwarf #I want them to have had a moment like that when Rimmer DID come back from being Ace;; maybe the right moment didn’t come #or whether their own awkwardness got in the way. It’s not impossible for lister to move in instinctively for a hug then remember the dream #and awkwardly dial it back down to a handshake or something and push down the emotional vulnerability #esp given Rimmer’s attempts to quantum skip away again later it’s possible that theres a lack of an emotional welcome home that eats at him #like he could go away again and it wouldn’t matter bc he didn’t know how much lister missed him. It didn’t get the right closure #which culminates in the moonlight speech. The closest thing lister can get to being honest about needing Rimmer to stick around #it’s still too much in some ways to just Say What He Means and feels in straightforward ways #So we’re sun and moon and moonlight only exists because of both of us is the way to go

Now, coming to my ask, I find it a little silly that people actually ship AlanGaipa when they had exactly 3 scenes 😆 and two of them were business like! JimGaipa and AlanWen had much more storyline and honestly shipping them (even as doomed or one sided pair) makes sense, but no, a significant number of people actually ship AlanGaipa and consider them a proper couple when they are anything but. Honestly, branding pair makes people go stupid. Sending you the ask cause I saw you saying something similar/having similar view. 😇

AlanGaipa had 3 scenes but have you seen those 3 scenes lmao like I know I'm slightly biased but those moments were so packed with non-verbal emotions like oof I could write a thesis on those 3 scenes lmao.

I was laughing at ppl shipping them before they even interacted but joke's on me bc I squealed when it actually happened lol. they really made the absolute most out of their limited screentime. And it's not like the canonization was in ppl's heads bc they actually implied it. obviously JimGaipa & AlanWen had more substance in their stories but considering what Alan and Gaipa went through respectively in those arcs, them finding each other in such an innocent and subtle way was one of my favorite parts of the show tbh 🥺

As we move deeper into this second wave of Jim + Jane Crow politics, we must turn our eyes and minds to the people within our communities: especially our men-folk.

In this "live podcast" program, we are discussing Black men and boys and how patriarchy not only displaces them from their ancestral bodies (i.e. history, memories, cultures, queerness, etc.) but also how they are stripped of their feelings, often at the hands of their parents (moms included), teachers, mentors, and peers. The characters and "content polluters" dancing across their blue screens reinforce these ideas and identities rooted in a dispossessed masculinity that leaves many men, women, and non-men emotionally illiterate.

Beyond providing recipes of self-love or ugly feminist models of policing the bodies and behaviors of men, we are stepping into the space as antiracist community members and decolonizers who want to rediscover and explore what we can all be if we only moved beyond the fog and fumes of white supremacy and patriarchy.

Moonlight Chicken 5 was so so scrumptiously meaty for Alan for Wen for Heart and Li Ming, but I'm stuck on how closed off Jim is and how he can't stop fucking up and pushing away the two people he prob most wants close by saying all the wrong things (accidentally, out of fear, to Li Ming; deliberately, out of fear, to Wen). Idk I guess when he said he wasn't fit to be anyone's home I expected a sad old gay and his baggage, but I'm loving how this gentle generous community-builder truly is not just sad but ice fucking cold to the people he needs most in his life, the people he needs to make a home for himself and not just for others.

─「美沙夜」─ one would think he had forgotten the promise he had made to her back when she was still human. the CHERUBIM didn't usually entertain the thoughts about the past. it felt like a long time ago as well as it just happened yesterday all at the same time. the days she spent with a shackle around her neck, and a countdown until her LIFE was no more. he was still waiting, she realized. misaya realized that very truth the moment she reopened her eyes as the VESSEL when she was first called upon. the way he rushed down to the summoning circle as though he had been waiting. why ? she didn't get it. or, perhaps, she did, but a part of her refused to come to terms with it even now.

that she had summoned a servant who was LOYAL TO A FAULT. a servant who proved her wrong about her belief that servants would eventually betray their masters. a servant that refuse to give up on her.

" what a stubborn pup. " she muttered to herself, words breaking the SILENCE between them yet the tone she carried was nothing of a COMPLAINT. there was a clear hint of tender affection others would not detect but the avenger knew that he would catch it. how was it that her words had bound him so deeply to her when she was sure he would be able to run free once she released him from the LEASH she had around his neck. those eyes when they looked at her, he looked as though he was telling her he would never fail her again.

as though he spent CENTURIES beating himself up over the fact that he could not protect her. she cut him loose and instead of running off, he remained faithfully right where she left him, eyes still looking at HER. his master. she was and still is his master after all these years.
