Oh dear, that's quite the dilema furend!

I've had a good think about this one, and there's a few ways you could appurroach it!

I hate to tell you this furend, but due to the conflicting nature of both of your f33lings, and the disparity in the quadrants, no quadrant will be truly viable fur you two. As it currently stands, at least.

So, it's obvious from what you've described that being completely upfront from the start would likely only end in disaster. That doesn't mean, howefur, that you can't be upfront at all-- but you may n33d to "set the scene" a little befur you and they would be comfurtable with it! (As comfurtable as one can be with a quadrant-breakup, of course.)

As fur how to do that-- if they have a diffurent purrson they are furends with, I'd start hinting to Moirail that they should hang out with that purrson instead! St33r them towards a reliable source of furendliness, that isn't you. Basically, try to lighten your own pale load by dispersing it to others to start with.

This will ensure they won't be, as you've described, as ready to break.

If they don't have anybody you think you could st33r them to, though, you may have to brave it!

It s33ms to me that they haven't b33n very good at reciprocating their moirail duties, if your f33lings have had time to develop into pitch. If you have to tell them, start with that!

To be completely honest, furend, from what you've described at least, they aren't ready to be in any quadrant, and a kismesstitude would purrobably wind up being toxic fur you both!

I know it's always furry hard to end a quadratic relationship, especially if you still have some sort of quadrant-based f33lings fur them, but this may be a time where it's best fur you!

TLDR;

St33r your current-moirail toward a diffurent furend they could rely on fur moirail duties, and tell them they haven't reciprocated paleness, let alone flushedness. I would genuinely advise against acting on your pitch f33lings, unfurtunately, as I believe it would not lead anywhere good fur you with their current state!

Aaah hi! & thank you so much! (I’ve never had someone say they wanted to eat my art, that’s such a high compliment, omg…)

So Scar & Griann. They met while playing the VR version of Flarp around mid adolescence!

Actually, the VR edition of Flarp is how all the various groups of characters know each other. When they were around 7-8 sweeps old, they all signed up for & played a VR Flarp called Third Life. After the campaign ended, they stayed in touch & over the years they’ve played four more campaigns over VR, occasionally adding in more players. (This is very odd for Flarpers & really just for trolls in general. Maintaining relationships outside of your quadrants once you’re an adult & off planet is exceedingly rare, but this group is now around 12-14 sweeps & just finished playing the Secret Life module together.) (…There might be something to be said about the complex shipping chart that has developed holding them together in some ways.) (But mostly they’re just all friends, for whatever shade & value of friendship is possible as an adult troll.)

Anyway! Back to Scar & Griann! Griann ‘accidentally’ (no one is sure how accurate that word is) led to Scar’s first death in the Third Life campaign. We can guess that either Griann really thought Scar wouldn’t die or he just is piss poor at thinking things through, ‘cause killing a sea dweller, even in a game, when you were not supposed to… Well let’s just say that Griann vowed his first life to Scar & Scar, whether by dint of being the friendliest sea dweller you’ve ever met or because he was genuinely placated by the vow, didn’t pursue revenge IRL as he was entitled to by troll custom.

(It’s important to remember here that 1. Griann is a mutant candy red blood & 2. everyone was around the age where blood colour starts showing in your eyes, making it harder to hide your hemostatus. Given Griann wasn’t a full adult, so there was just a tint of red to his irises, during the Third Life campaign most of them assumed Griann was a rustblood. & a such a low blood killing fucking royalty out of turn, frankly most of them were pretty damn shocked that Scar accepted the vow instead of killing Griann on the spot, at least in game. It was very much a defining moment for everyone’s thoughts of Scar.)

So Griann & Scar teamed up & feelings… happened. Most of the rest of the crew saw their relationship as a somewhat forced moiraillegence, Griann placating Scar for his own safety as well as that of others while voicing his desire to leave the partnership to almost anyone who’d listen. By the end of the campaign, the forced part fell off people’s estimations, as Grian obviously became closer & closer to Scar. But it still seemed like a pretty cut & dry moiraillegence, albeit a kinda dysfunctional one, given how much death & destruction Scar still enacted on everyone.

When they were asked about their fresh moiraillegence after the campaign, they both just kinda smiled & nodded, trying not to think about all the confusing vacillating make outs that happened on Monopoly Mountain. & they’ve been living in ??? ever since.

Now, Mummbo Jummbo. My favorite jade blood. (My only jade blood lol.) He & Griann have known each other since they were grubs & have always been pretty much inseparable, despite Mummbo not picking up VR Flarp until the group’s second campaign.

No one knows what the heck is going on between Griann & Mummbo. They are utterly, helplessly devoted to each other in a way that everyone speculates whether they flushed or maybe ashen or ??? Like. Scar & Griann, while they keep up the image of them being moirails, anyone who really knows them can see quadrant vacillation clear as day. That’s not too out of the ordinary. But Mummbo & Griann? Extremely odd by troll standards, particularly adult troll standards. They seem to swing between pity friends & hate friends, as many troll friends do; they just do it at an intensity & velocity that most trolls find baffling outside of quadrants.

(The truth is Mummbo’s quadrants are completely empty & he prefers it that way. Aroace king right here. If you ask if, he’ll just say that quadrants are too much fuss & confusion for him. Though it is worth noting that Mummbo’s main point of reference for what quadrants look like for a long time was whatever the fuck Griann & Scar have going on, which, is, uh, not particularly stable & frequently somewhat unhealthy. Love them though.)

Mummbo & Scar become good pity friends after being introduced by Griann post-Third Life campaign, though they also have their hate friend days. Heck there have even been a few times that others have suspected Mummbo was pitch flirting with Scar (like during the Secret Life campaign when Mummbo said, rather loudly, in public, something to the effect of ‘get good.’). But really it’s a case of the hate friendship aspect of their relationship flaring & Mummbo being utterly clueless to flirting of any kind, even when he seemingly is the one doing it.

homestuck quadrants are wrong and full of lies but I know the truth; the totally serious essay

Troll romance doesn't make much of an appearance in Homestuck. It's not delved into; we're only left with what is presented to us at face value. Many don't do deep dives into the deeper aspects of fictional alien relationships, and that's okay. We're not obligated to critically analyze every piece of media we consume. It's okay to just effortlessly enjoy things. These people are also wrong and stupid and i hate them.

My point is that what we're initially presented in Homestuck as Troll Romance is wrong. What most people perceive Troll Romance as is wrong. Let's get into it.

I'll mainly talk about moiraillegence because it's the quadrant with the most screen time and I'm lazy. Specifically gamkar, erifef, and nepquius, since they get the most screen time. It's no question that NepQuius is the healthiest of these three, and GamKar is the least. I'm not accounting for the time when Eridan murdered Feferi because at that point they weren't dating.

Wrong.

Well, right, in a way. Those things do help. But Equius and Nepeta had something that no one else did. They both contributed. Not only did Nepeta pacify Equius's rages, but Equius pacified Nepeta's dangerlust. He kept her from FLARPing, a dangerous and deadly game.

Eridan never functioned as Feferi's moral compass. He never did anything for her, relationship wise, besides abstaining from mass genocide. I don't really think that's a giant accomplishment.

But in a typical moiriallegence, one troll must pacify the other. There are no deviations from the norm. But the norm suffocates any inklings of romance with false ideas of love. It's a relationship that's all give and no take.

But that's the idea of romance that has stood true for centuries! It's completely unthinkable that the tried and true way to love someone, the ideals it's based upon and the actions thus caused are flawed! That has never happened before! Especially not regarding misogyny, racism, or homophobia! Why would you think that! /s

In fact, Karkat and Gamzee's moiraillegence is a perfect example with everything wrong with Traditional Troll Romance!

And that's exactly what GamKar does. Karkat does not love Gamzee. He's afraid of him. And that is why they failed. They failed because they tried to uphold a false standard of romance which was completely devoid of love.

So why would this standard of Moiraillegence stand so strong for so long? Could it have anything to do with the fact that nothing in Alternian society was based on love and kindness and instead on war and profit? Moiraillegence only exists to keep a troll from mass destruction and violence caused by the violent nature of their society.

But thankfully for these poor teenagers, Moiraillegence is the only quadrant that is poisoned by violence (real mcr there, I know). thank god that red romance, which was founded on pity, the only quadrant or relationship in a troll's life where they are not expected to be the best they can and constantly give their all and can just act like normal people is just founded on love and happiness and not at all necessary for a violent society to pacify and give hope to countless troops./s

its great that kismesitude is also great and healthy! and is not at all based on rivalry, which serves to improve a person. forcing constant self-improvement into all aspects of life, work, and interpersonal relationships, a troll's one joy in life would serve a function in a war-forged state. /s

For a moment there I thought that you meant that you think such things, but then I realized that you don’t and are merely talking about the fandom’s perspective

It is still like that today when it comes to double standards or people forgetting it has happened to another character but barely gets attention or a pass. Like how Equius is racist like Eridan, but doesn't get much shit from the fandom because of his moiraillegence with Nepeta. Nobody explores of him trying to treat lowbloods better in fan fics or thinking Nepeta will be okay to hang out with good people like Karkat or Tavros, despite being lowbloods. Equius and Tavros have been subjected to crossdressing, but the fandom favors March Eridan to the point they headcanon him as trans or non-binary. Why isn't it done the same for these characters when we have Tavros in his fairy outfit or Equius in that maid outfit? Is it because they wanted to end that ugly calendar artwork? Are they more okay to see Tavros and Equius dressed in drag as a gag, but want Eridan to be taken seriously despite his character being a racist creep?

before i start just know that i hold nothing against you personally for liking these if i dont, youre a respectable person and i can see your reasoning for each and every one of them with that being said... arasol, 5/10 the main quadrant i see for arasol is pale, in which i don't think would work in any sort of way, so i prefer it flushed... but that doesn't mean i LIKE it. i think being flushed is a lot less committed than being pale, like you can go through several matesprites but once you find a moirail they're probably gonna be life long, but i still don't think that sollux and aradia have that commitment in canon. i think that in au's, especially humanstuck, it could work- and that's why it's not a super low rating, just kind of mediocre to me. mitula, 8/10 this is a solid ship, and i don't have much to say on it because it's just... solid. probably my favourite dancestor ship, at least in the top 3, and in such a turbulent franchise as homestuck, it's refreshing to see a couple that is just healthy and in love for the sake of it despite the odds being against them. like i said, solid!

meowrails, 8/10 another solid ship that falls under the same category as mitula in my book: in love for the sake of being in love. there's a reason why equius and nepeta were the face of moiraillegance and the fact that nepeta is the only reason why equius was bearable to me at all in my first reread is probably a lot of why i like it so much, even now that i've come to appreciate equius' character more. it's just one of those ships where if you don't ship it.... why? erifef, 2/10 i just can't see this one at all. like mod rose said, i don't think erifef are compatible in any quadrant at all, but especially not pitch. no matter how the relationship devolved in canon, it started as a pale relationship where the two held pale feelings for each other, that evolved into distaste on feferi's side and flushed feelings on eridan's side, but it was never HATE for either of them. and i don't think it ever could be, feferi likes eridan even if she got pissed off with and somewhat tired of him by what we see, and eridan certainly could never hate her. the only way i could see it is eridan forcing himself to think the hurt he feels towards feferi is hate and pursuing her pitch, but still... i just don't see it. maybe there's au's where this could work, but i haven't seen any, so it's low in my books. karezi, 6/10 this one is pretty mediocre for me because i prefer other ships with them, but still, it's decently solid as a background ship for other ships i like. i don't ship it hard but i don't hate it, yaknow? i think the two of them had a really interesting and funny relationship in canon but i ship them as 'that one awkward crush where you both clearly had feelings but never acted on them so now the relationship is just kind of side-stepping around that' johnrezi, 7/10 again, pretty mediocre, mostly because i don't like john very much so i'm not passionate about any ships of his. nonetheless, i enjoy this one as one of the only displays of a good, healthy pitch relationship we see in homestuck and i honestly wouldn't mind consuming more media for it as it is probably my favourite john ship... though that is again down to the fact i'm not passionate about anything john-wise. i think johnrezi is solid though!

Outside of maybe moiraillegence, he’d be looking for higher blooded (teal up) partners, at least currently. In red, he’d probably look for someone hard working and patient. In pitch he might want a rival shop owner, but definitely someone sturdy. Moirail would need to be more personable than him and if they’re small and cute (relatively) that’s a bonus. I don’t know what he’d need in ashen besides, again, sturdy.

They also all need to not ask too many questions about his lusus or things will go south quickly.

As a disclaimer we would like to note that pale and black quadrants can be up to reader interpretation regarding involving romanticism. And we acknowledge this!

The mod team talked these points over, and we agreed that

1. Selfcest is incest. So no pairings of one character x themselves, even if from a doomed or different timeline.

2. As quadrants excluding auspisticeships and moiraillegence have sexual sides to them, a relationship that has, for example, Kanaya as an auspistice to a relationship involving Porrim, isn’t inherently incestuous. However, if the relationship Porrim is in is with the Dolorosa, or another Maryam (in regards to the first question namely), that would not be accepted. While the auspisticeship isnt incestuous, the relationship the auspistice is involved with is. So we’re going to say having a relative as an auspistice is fine, but only if the relationship being refereed is between two characters that are not related.

With this in mind, we request that if your prompts are between two characters that are related, please specify it is outside of a quadrant! And if it IS within a quadrant, even a non-sexual one like pale relationships, offer at least two prompts that do not have related characters in quadrants, in case your assigned partner is uncomfortable drawing the relatives in a quadrant even if platonic, just to be safe! The first time you see her, you think she’s Kanaya. You can feel mild panic encroaching on your brain - you killed Kanaya, who retaliated by killing you, and you’re not sure if you could face her.

You’re not sure if she’s still angry.

But it’s not Kanaya, its someone else. She has piercings, golden rings through her eyebrows, ears, and lips. Tattoos spiral down her arms, the sleeveless dress she’s wearing surprisingly revealing.

She’s older than you.

But she comes over to you, sits down next to you, leans her back against the purple walls of Derse’s streets. Your dreambubbles are normally filled with memories of Derse.

“You look upset,” she says, her voice soothing. It washes over you like a tidal wave, and you already feel calmer. “Did something happen?”

You almost laugh. Friends? Your so called “friends” never visited you once - not when you were fighting off angels alone on LoWaA, not when you killed and killed and killed all for a girl who would never love you back.

In all honesty, you were probably a better moirail to her than she ever was to you.

what is your opinion on gamzee x karkat?

A ship that should have shown more detail after the shooshpap, but is brushed aside when Act 6 came around. Some say the ship sunk upon GAME OVER, but the shitty writing of Karkat being less involved with Gamzee and Gamzee himself being used as a plot device for Lord English, really broke the connection they used to have. Part of me genuinely believe that Gamzee and Karkat are close as friends. If Karkat could handle Eridan of all people, Gamzee would be close to having some tolerance. Nothing about hemospectrum gets brought up between them, though one could argue it's because Gamzee never knew about Karkat being a mutantblood. The two had been together with Jack Noir as well, showing they had worked together at some point. The worse offense is when Epilogues and Homestuck^2 happened. One say that Karkat doesn't want to be his moirail because he has to be committed to staying a monogamous relationship with Dave, but then that question on why he would go against quadrants, when he had been most into it. Some could say that after the incident on the meteor and Karkat knew the truth of what Gamzee did, he would cut ties with him for good. But even after Post Retcon and the "redemption" in Epilogues, he barely interacts with him or speaks to the guy. You would think he would say something about him fucking Jane Crocker to cuck Jake. But it could be said that Jane and Gamzee are in a blackrom relationship and Jane/Jake are redrom, so this sort of poly relationship was apparently okay in Karkat's eyes. So then what would it be for Jade/Rose to push aside Kanaya Maryam, one of his last living good friend?! I don't think it's moirails if they suddenly make a baby! Since when does moiraillegence go far to birth a child?! I get they have to help another, but it was never implied to go far as sexual intimacy like this! Since the rest of the human gang that's not John are aware about Gamzee sexually harassing Tavros Crocker, may as well just imply that he knows it too and is fine. Hell, maybe pedophilia or age gape differences were a thing in Alternia, so he knows he is still following his old customs from a destroyed home. Andrew Hussie and/or WhatPumpkin probably didn't like Gamzee and Karkat being close. Maybe they had plans for Karkat to cut ties after the Murderstuck. But there could have been chances of him trying to save an old friend from being used as a tool for a bigger bad. Or Gamzee trying to break free from being a servant to Lord English, feeling somewhat guilt that he has to go against a friend he was close with and could never go back because of his deeds. Sadly, such a thing was never explored. I could only hope fanfics/fanart could explore this. Old Gamzee and Karkat art prior to Murderstuck and Game Over showed how funny and close they would be.

Why did Eridan get done so dirty in homestuck and pesterquest? It's not fair, he's one of the cooler characters.

A prince I would always bow to wwhenevver he appears. A character that shows the horrendous side of the planet he lives on, taking advantage of the hemospectrum for being born on top, shows his own flaws, view the moments he genuinely cares for others when not seeking out the necessary relationships that his home planet enforces, the despair of dying from an unbeatable foe, and punished properly when those dark emotions made him make bad choices. Eridan is one that I love him as an antagonist and do believe that if he had gotten better treatment, he probably would play a bigger and best role as a villain compared to Gamzee. Or have potential to become good upon confronting his flaws and actions. People tend to exaggerate some of his traits like desperate for love due to personal experiences and sometimes ignore moments when he was not a horny motherfucker. Even now, people will label him as incel for that reason. Other characters said some innuendos or have some questionable sexual talks, but the excuse is either played for laughs and not flirtatious. Sometimes forgetting other characters like Equius or Gamzee have their own lewd moments. They also dislike him being racist towards lowerbloods, but forgets he is close friends with Karkat, Feferi points out that he never executes his plan to kill all land dwellers, and other characters like Vriska and Equius take pride in the blood. For Vriska's excuse, it's Vriska. Did nothing wrong bluh 8luh huge 8itch. For Equius, it's his moiraillegence with Nepeta that makes people think he is not so bad, despite that Equius would forbid Nepeta from being close to the lowbloods out of fear for their influence Not only that, people forget Nepeta also has to calm and tame the blueblood down for his own violence. It's not been brought up about how Nepeta became close to him, but Equius must have been quite unstable before Nepeta came along. Some fans can't accept the worst side of him, even when things like helping Feferi to feed her lusus or not wanting to die from an unstoppable enemy is understandable why he did what he had to do. We have seen what would have happened if Vriska fought Jack, causing a doomed timeline, but not many fans gave her shit for it. I don't know how or why they give Eridan a gender arc in the first place if it meant retconning existing canon material from the webcomic. Like how could Sollux's lusus(lusii) accept his son's choices if he is CHAINED UP ON TOP OF A BUILDING TO NOT CAUSE HAVOC. Is it because he is one of the few cis-males that is interested in the opposite sex at some points and want to get rid of that? I would believe it, considering the John June crap. Can't have based boys like John Egbert, Eridan Ampora, Caliborn, and Dirk Strider be around. Guys who accept themselves or enjoy being what they are.

It sucks with how Homestuck is treated to this point. Many characters have fallen from grace or altered because of bad writing to win the crowd with progressive brownie points. Eridan falls into that latter and I hate it. Not as wworse like others, but still just as bad. Best to stick with certain ones that you are cool with canon and ignore anything else beyond Act 6.
