modern atla au renaissance is in the making :) starting off with modern gaang in the dorms!!!

masterpost!

I personally go to a small university but considering how they are from literally all over the world, maybe it would make sense for them to go to a bigger school? lmk what we're thinking

Katara, Suki, Toph, and Ty Lee (HEAR ME OUT) live in a quad with two bedrooms and a common space

Toph and Ty Lee share a bedroom and Katara and Suki share the other bedroom

Katara and Suki are both very neat. they're also so busy they don't really have the time to be making messes.

Toph and Ty Lee are both disasters, but the mess stays contained to their bedroom area. not dirty, just cluttered. every once in a while one of them will get a random burst of energy and clean/organize the entire space.

Azula and Mai are roommates

they are roommates silently.

neither of them talk when they're in the room and that's how they prefer it. they only talk when they have something to talk about (they love to talk shit)

Aang and Sokka are roommates

perfect because their gfs are also roomates!

Sokka is significantly cleaner than Aang but they're both on the same page most of the time and are actually really good roommates

their room is decorated atrociously though. man moment.

Sokka stays up late and wakes up early (he's a STEM major!!! he's busy!!! he has a schedule!!!) Aang could sleep through literally anything

Zuko lives in a single dorm with his ESA. it's a turtleduck.

he lives on the same floor as Sokka and Aang

Azula and Mai live in the same building but on a different floor

the girls' quad is in a different building, but it's the largest space so it is the usual hangout spot. the others will come over to hang out and crash there after late night studying or if they're just too lazy to walk back to their building at night

when someone has had a rough day they'll go visit the emotional support turtleduck in Zuko's room

speaking of animals

Appa has a parking pass

he can't fit in the dorm, but he hangs out in the green space next to the dorm building and sleeps under a big tree :)

starbucks run on the flying bison anyone??

It was Friday night, and that only meant one thing. Film night at Azula and Zuko's.

The votes were in. It was a horror night.

As Zuko started searching through their extensive film library, Azula started fidgeting in her seat, scrunched up in the corner of the massive L shaped sofa with Ty-lee on her lap.

Ty-lee:- Hey. What's wrong, do you need the bathroom or something?

Azula shook her head.

Ty-lee:- Okay, am I uncomfortable, do you want me to get off?

Azula shook her head again, clamping her arms around her girlfriend's waist to stop her from moving.

Ty-lee:- Zula. What's going on ..... ?

Zuko:- Shh, it's starting.

As the opening credits rolled, Ty-lee twisted back around to watch the film.

Ty-lee found it strange just how many times Azula flinched during the film.

She didn't make her usual sarcastic comments either. Infact, she was completely still and silent. The tight hug keeping her in place was the only thing she felt from her girlfriend the whole time. Usually Azula would stroke her sides, play with her hair or fingers, and often kiss her shoulder, neck, or cheek, but not now, now was total radio silence.

It was crunch time in the film.

The scares were more frequent. The deaths were even messier. The screaming was intense.

Azula:- (whispering into the back of Ty-lee's shoulder) Oh no, oh no, oh no.

Ty-lee reached her arm back and stroked her girlfriend's leg reassuringly.

Azula:- (still whispering) Oh. I don't like this. (High pitched scream from the film). I don't like it. I don't like it. I don't like it.

Ty-lee leaned further back into her girlfriend. Trying to ground her as Azula still had a vise like grip of her and Ty-lee found it almost impossible to twist around and comfort her girlfriend.

When the scary killer music started and the screaming got worse Azula flipped.

Azula:- MUMMY!

She half sobbed, half yeld. Before she abruptly stood and ran out the room at full pelt.

Ty-lee stood shakily from the floor where she had been 'tossed' and looked at Zuko for an explanation.

Zuko:- (Looking shifty) Guess it's probably a good time to mention that Azula does 'do' horror films, they scare her.

The Gaang all groaned, whilst Mai smacked her boyfriend upside the head.

Mai:- You could have mentioned it BEFORE we started the film.

Zuko:- (shrugged) Slipped my mind.

Katara:- (raising an eyebrow) It slipped your mind that your little sister is scared of horror films, whilst she's sitting right across from you?

Zuko nodded.

Suki:- You must have heard her muttering to herself, I could hear it.

Again Zuko just shrugged. He was about to continue the film when.

Ursa:- ZUKO. KITCHEN. NOW!!!

The film was abruptly changed to a light and fluffy Disney one.

Zuko grumbled about being grounded for two weeks for putting his sister through that.

Azula had nightmares for a month.

Friday film night was heavily monitored from then on.

Hear me out, Actor/Modern AU Zukka where Sokka has an editng acc that's just Zuko thirst edits and he constantly has the caption as something like "He's my bf fr" or "love my man♥︎♥︎" and ppl think he's just some random Zuko simp but in reality he is THEE Zuko simp

Another funny thing would be if Zuko knew of the acc (maybe even followed it back) but didn't know it was Sokka until he accidently found him logged into the acc or something

ATLA modern au that is slightly more realistic than usual:

Aang:

Does not go to college

Lives part time with his grandpa gyatso and part time in his VW van

Works as a janitor at a dojo he used to train at and goes to the various kids belt ceremonies

Does a lot of activism in his spare time

Katara:

Goes to college on student loans

Lives in student housing with Ming from the episode the fortune teller as her roommate (this was too funny not to do)

Used to work for a nonprofit but got paid shit, was encouraged to do a lot of unpaid labor, and got super burned out

Now works as a tutor

Is torn between becoming a teacher and full time activism, while struggling with possible not being able to support herself on either path

Still does a lot of activism and that’s how she met aang

They were both part of a blockade to stop construction on something bad for the environment, the cops showed up, aang helped katara get away with his VW bus (I said more realistic not fully grounded)

Sokka:

Also in college on student loans

In student housing with tio from the episode the northern air temple as his roommate

Has a work study position with Pian Dao who’s a professor

Has switched majors a lot but eventually settled on engineering

Toph:

Uses the money her parents send her for tuition to rent a shitty apartment

They think she’s enrolled but she’s not

The college she told them she got into is very far away from them to help justify moving away

Doesn’t have a regular job but is part of a local level MMA league that she does pretty well in

Survives off that, odd jobs, and leftover money from her tuition

Suki:

Got into college on a sports scholarship

Is studying physical therapy

Rents an apartment with several roommates (kyoshi warriors)

Has some kind of training or coaching job, think camp counselor

Met aang through the dojo he works at and/or toph through her fighting league

Zuko:

Used to go to college but dropped out

After he was cut off bounced between his friends places before ending up fully moving in with toph

Works at his uncle’s tea shop (obviously)

Is generally very lost and doesn’t know what he wants to do with his life

I need to draw modern au atla just because I need these children in absolutely horrendous clothing. Sokka wears a Hawaiian shirt with his winter coat and fingerless gloves from a tourist trap. Aang wears a sky bison t-shirt with a floral-print skirt. He goes jogging in violently neon shorts. Zuko wears black turtlenecks and roughed-up black jeans ONLY but secretly has a closet full of very expensive embroidered silk robes and coats that fit him perfectly. Toph wears cargo shorts and a too-big death metal t-shirt and her socks are mismatched. Her crocs have one (1) pin each and it’s a middle finger. Katara almost looks normal until winter comes, at which point she becomes a terrifying force of nature in six layers of coats she made herself. they are cringe. they are free

Would you have any thoughts about the Gaang in a modern au (either with or without bending), especially jobs? I legit love how there’s never been a consensus of how they’d live, especially job wise, in the fandom — except for Katara, she is absolutely a doctor, surgeon, ER badass. Personally, I love the thought of Zuko as a child protective agent, and Sokka as a high school teacher, not just for the dramatic Zukka potential lol haha either way, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

aaa ok i love and adore to see how their roles get translated in modern au’s in such clever ways, i loveee your ideas for zukka workplace drama that’s so 🥺 ok i’ll list some of my faves but feel free to add

-doctor katara SO TRUE and activist katara also so true either way she’s helping people and giving all she’s got

-aang also activist monk-turned *insert job that has to do with flying?? or meteorology??* AND i love the silly little headcanon he and zuko are lion dance partners dkfjdj

-toph wwe champion. without question

- jet could also work with kids tbh as either a child protective agent too or teaching martial arts classes for kids as some sort of social program he zuko and toph have an underground fight club every tuesday he and iroh have a wholesome breaking bad situationship going on with banger edibles

- zuko the guy with 294737 job options tbh either as jasmine dragon clerk, firefighter, historian / khon expert and standing authority on the ramakien, parkour guy, sword guy, guy who goes to business school just to learn how to efficiently dismantle dad’s financial empire, and i am extremely partial on muai thay champion-instructor zuko who has like a post-injury gym program just for the zukka of it all of him helping sokka with his leg during rehab 😌

- sokka also guy that can do anything tbh wether working as inventor or in tech/mechanic fixing things, working at a science museum (hi robin), marine biologist (hi kath) working as an astronomer or at the planetarium bc he’s always been fascinated by the night sky and the moon, artist, poet, mythbuster, sword guy as well, all of these at once. most importantly he has an insanely popular food blog on the side

- suki kendo captain of an all-girl club

- florist mai. (specifically ikebana artist) which is comic canon and in context made little sense but i love it it’s beautiful bc it brings me to

The Gaang has a rule stating that Sokka and Mai are no longer allowed to play pool on a team together because it’s mean and unfair. Sokka just calls them sore losers and Mai gives a cold cold glare

modern atla college au :) everyone’s major/minors!

master post <3

Aang went in undecided and took a year to pick a major

he wanted to try everything and he did

favorite random classes he took before landing on a social justice and political science double major: entomology, women and gender studies, medieval studies

Katara went in as an education major for water bending because I think that’s something they’d have in this universe

she added a social justice minor and a water bending minor to that, she’s already taking every water bending class she can get may as well get credits from it

Sokka is a mechanical engineering major EASILY

he gets an art history minor a math minor and a geography minor. he loves class.

Toph is an earth bending major and a chemistry minor

unexpected, I know. but think about how much more she could bend if she knew the chemical composition of everything

Sokka and Toph have a lot of classes together. engineering and earth bending have a surprising amount of overlap

metal elements? that’s just earth baby

Zuko is a political science major and fire bending minor

Ty Lee also convinces him to do tech crew for the theatre program and eventually to have a theatre minor

like Sokka, he overloads his class schedule like crazy but the difference is he doesn’t do it on purpose

start of semester: “yeah i can handle six classes and a lab” halfway through semester: “lol nvm”

Suki is a pre-law and psychology double major and is also the coolest person you’ve ever met

she’s very committed to helping people <3

Ty Lee is a dance and theatre major (relatable)

Mai is a business major and a social justice minor

she makes capitalism her bitch!!!!!

the social justice classes put her in a lot of classes with Aang and Katara which is a great dynamic that I love

Azula is a fire bending and pre-law double major which once again gives her a lot of classes with Suki and that’s another great dynamic

aang: yes, because he enjoys the fun little thrill of it.

katara: yes, because she enjoys “sticking it to the man” and considers it praxis.

sokka: not unless he’s truly desperate, because he knows that he’d get caught and given a life sentence will die in jail if he so much as takes a single apple.

toph: yes, because it’s fun and also praxis.

zuko: not unless you count that time that azula slipped a diamond necklace in his pocket and then pretended to have no idea why zuko would ever do such a horrible thing after he got in trouble for it.

suki: yeah of course. it’s literally fine and necessary to do.

azula: she is a law abiding citizen!! but also she steals red lipstick sometimes, just to feel something. she doesn’t even need it, since she already has 200 tubes of red lipstick at home. but what’s one more?

mai: yes, even though she obviously doesn’t need to, because she’s bored and loves a quiet rebellion.

ty lee: she doesn’t need to because she already gets things for free just by batting her big brown eyes at various men who offer to buy her everything her heart desires. she’s never paid for a single object in her life.
