#mistholme spoilers
Note
Okay so (sorry if you've answered this before, Tumblr isn't turning anything up, but the search function is notorioisly...nonfunctioning) I have a question.
I'm trying not to give many dire spoilers to anyone else new, but what are the 'proper' pronouns for the Queen's child? Do the fae even conceptualise them the same way/does it even matter to them? I noticed that Queen usually uses 'they' for their child, but also just kind of goes with the flow well enough, and uses 'he' sometimes when Guide is using 'he' to refer to him. (And, sidenote, I'm p sure they're always or almost always referred to as they themself too. I can't remember if anyone besides Guide refers to any of the other fae using pronouns and not just titles/nomikers, and Guide assumes Stranger is 'he', but is that correct? Or, again, is there even such a thing as 'correct' when it comes to the fae? Is this something they care about? Or, also, could it be something they purposely don't clarify and prefer the ambiguity, because the less people know for certain, well...the less people know! And the less they have over you! That does seem to be how they operate).
And Beast I'm pretty sure referred to them as 'he' a couple times soon after Guide said what ppl at Mistholme knew him as, but usually defaults back to 'she' still, because that's how he remembers his friend.
I'm just interested to know if there's an answer to this, I suppose, and if it will be brought to a conclusion in the show or purposely left ambiguous. I think either way is interesting, as from my questions above, I've been turning this around a lot.
Also, related: was the whole backstory of the Queen's child, with the pulling away from family and finding a place with Beast instead, and then going back only to basically take what they could (what was theirs) and leave again, stay estranged because of the expectations of them they didn't want, plus added in that Beast literally knew his close friend as a girl only for him to be known as a man later in life... was that Supposed to be a trans allegory at inception, or was that just a happy accident? I feel like it's too much to be accidental, but I thought I'd ask. I love it either way and was really taken in by Beast's arc, and I'm very interested to see how it pans out when (if?) they [Queen's child]
Sorry that was so long lol. I've just been bingeing the show the past few days whilst i was working on things and it's been on my mind a lot!
Hey, thanks for listening and also thinking so much about the show!
I've kept things a little ambiguous with regard to the Fae's concept of gender, because it allows for the conflict between the Queen and The Man to be about more than just one thing. It's about gender, but also parental expectations and finding yourself and whatever else it sparks inside you. The Fae are very different from us in a lot of ways, but also a lot like us in others, and that means the story can resonate with our experiences without being a direct allegory.
I was definitely thinking in terms of gender discovery and transness, but from the Queen's perspective we don't even really know if that's part of it at all for them. I wrote the Fae to have a different concept of gender to us because, well, why wouldn't they? And then I've left it a bit ambiguous because explaining everything about something can make it mundane, and I definitely don't ever want the alternatural to be mundane. In my head, the Queen is The Man's only "Parent", they just decided to have an heir and kind of... manifested one? Because that seems like something a Fairy Queen would do. But that's not really important to the narrative, so, no need to include it.
Pronouns for characters are:
Guide: It/Its
The Queen: They/Them
The Man: Tricky. The people in the Museum use He/Him, because that's what they've known him as this whole time and they've never been corrected. They don't know how The Fae relate to gender and they have bigger problems at this point.
The Queen uses They/Them, because The Man is more than just an individual- they're The Heir, they're not a person they're the future, and all of The Queen's expectations made manifest. Sometimes they've said He in front of the Guide, because the Guide has actually interacted with The Man far more recently than The Queen has, and they're like... going along with that? But they always default back to neutral terms.
The Beast still thinks of The Man as their friend, the person they were when they were both cubs. It's very stuck in the past, desperate for a return, and the complexity of the Fae isn't something it understands. Sometimes it uses He/Him, but it's not really sure what it all means.
Stranger: He/Him is probably fine? I think Stranger probably changes it on a whim to mess with people anyway lol.

Thoughts about The Mistholme Museum of Mystery, Morbidity, and Mortality now that I’m caught up (spoilers!):
1. Goddamn this fandom is tiny. Possibly the smallest I’ve ever been a part of. It’s an honor to fight alongside you, gents.
2. I firmly believe that being called Mistholme makes Guide uncomfortable. It obviously has a negative connotation (what with the name being used against it), but also it continues to introduce itself to people as “Guide” even after discovering its true name. It also never corrects the directors on name, though it has been shown to be capable of standing up for itself in similar situations.
3. There is SUCH good potential for emotional whump with this one. I'm brewing as we speak.
4. The fact that every item in the museum has the potential to be another Chekov's gun is so exciting, and I find myself trying to figure out how each story might aid in the overall narrative. I've never done this before while listening to other podcasts that follow the "individual, episodic accounts of horror or surrealism overlaid an overarching story usually involving an institution or investigation falling to pieces due to the horrors/surrealism" framework. If i had a nickel…
5. Do you know how refreshing it is to have characters who use nonbinary pronouns be as common as those who use binary pronouns? Very, it's very refreshing. In all 200 episodes of TMA, there were, what, 4? None of whom were voice acted or played any major role. Here in Mistholme we have The Guide, The Beast, The Man with the Voice, and the Curator (though we have yet to meet them). Plus many other people mentioned related to the exhibits.
6. I really like the sound design in this one. It's simple, only really being used when necessary, but that makes it effective. Mistholme is very well balanced, too. I've struggled to listen to some other podcasts in the past coughEskewcough because of poor volume balancing.
That's it for now, but I'll add on to this if I have anything more to say

Mistholme totally qualifies as a horror podcast, by the way
My personal opinion but comparing it with the other horror podcasts I listen to, it fits right in
I’d classify it somewhere similar to TMA and – although I never got into it – the SCP. It’s a different variety of horror but very much counts. Specific stories from The Mistholme Museum of Mystery, Morbidity, and Mortality definitely remind me of specific stories from… A Voice From Darkness, The Cellar Letters, The Storage Papers, The Magnus Archives.
And one story from a Season 4 episode is perfectly eldritch horror. Driving even the Audio Tour Guide into a state where it… dies. Instead of getting deleted/ destroyed.
So if you’re into anthology style horror podcasts and can sit through more fantasy/ sci-fi parts before the true horror begins, I totally recommend the MMoMMaM podcast.
And if you’re a horror podcast nut and haven’t listened to the other 4 podcasts I mention here, go check them out. And if eldritch horror sounds like your jam, Malevolent Pod is right there.
I still need to check out so many of the “Nine to Midnight” participants but I’m also behind on The Amelia Project (not horror) and I’m antsy for Malevolent and Cellar Letters to continue (if I wasn’t a college student without expendable income, I’d definitely support through Patreon)

Mistholme once again giving me exactly what I want from a show (morally grey/evil characters receiving Care and Healing). Will this be a terrible idea for the museum. Maybe. Here for it tho

Okay okay I’ve finaLly got my thoughts together after that episode
Spoilers for latest Mistholme (s6 e13 Erased) under cut
1- how many panicking Audio Tour Guides are there now
2- honestly I think I get the head of research’s explanation pretty well? It’s pretty simple, it just seems complicated bc it contrary to how we usually think of the world. The areas given focus are static; the others are fluid, and exist in relation to the static areas. Isn’t this sorta how quantum physics works? Observation changing things?
3- this is the worst possible way for my “the head of Research is Dee, the woman who was led to the museum via the numbers station” theory to be confirmed ((assuming I’m not forgetting a previous time this was referenced))
4- can’t they wish for her back??? deeeee :((((((
5- :(((((
6- :(((((((((((((((
7- WALTS CARDSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
8- “never change mother” the Guide once again saying what we’re all thinking
9- they better get the head of research back or I’m going to be Very SadTM

Audio
IT’S FEELING EMOTIONAL ABOUT THE AUDIO TOUR GUIDE HOURS, FELLAS.
Spoilers for season 5 episode 8 “REPENTANT”
[Transcript:
Retrieval: I don't--
Guide: And where does that leave me? If Walt turning to sludge is just the consequences of the choices he made, that’s the end of his path, what does that say about me?
Retrieval: What are you talking about?
Guide: More people have died because of me than ever did because of Walt. It’s my fault that the Glassways opened. Half the people who went through the Glassways died there, and even if they did come back they had to live with the memory. And that’s not even getting into the people who didn’t come back, or that came back and drowned right away, or that came back wrong, or that died on missions through the Glassways. I beat myself up about those all the time, I can’t stop thinking about all of them- and there’s a lot of me to do the thinking, more every day.
Do you know- I only just realised yesterday that I can stop telling people to incinerate me? That’s just been part of me this whole time and I don’t question it. Took some genuine self-talk- literally- for me to stop asking for that. I have to tell myself that I’m doing my best to make up for mistakes I made when I was only barely self-aware, and I work so hard to make up for it. And then along came Walt, and I didn’t trust him. Same as you, or the Head of Restoration. Because he was a little odd, or because we could tell that there was something not right about him. Turns out, we were the same, me and him. And we didn’t help him, and now he’s dead, and you’re saying that’s just his fault. Yeah, he walked his own path. But we didn’t lift a finger to help him find a better one. ]

You got a humble heart, it doesn't mean you kneel Continuous from the start, it doesn't make it real
How is that severe and repeated trauma treating you, Mistholme?
BACKGROUND CHARACTERS (left-right-down): Beast, Not_Eagle, The Man w/ The Voice Like Yummmyyy, Stranger, and on top-- the Queen's crown!
I started this off as an evil Guide thing but it devolved into me projecting my multiplicity onto Guide. You cannot tell me Not_Eagle isn't an introject
