Salvage Showcase - Mukuro Ikusaba....'s Cult

Back to Killer Killer, home of Danganronpa's most wasted potential in terms of characters, settings and concepts.

Last time we spoke of Ted Chikatilo and how the writers didn't want him to be anything beyond an Ultimate mad bomber. So this time we have the penultimate villains of Killer Killer: the Cult of Mukuro Ikusaba!

Summary

Like with many villains and characters from Killer Killer, the cult's background prior to the events of the manga is unknown. What is known is that they are women who are very devoted to one of the Despair Sisters - Mukuro Ikusaba. It's to the point that they all dressed in exact copies of her old school uniform and modify themselves to look like her physically (by some method anyway).

The cult first appeared following a report that the deceased Mukuro Ikusaba broke out and was attacking the 8th Branch. When Takumi, Misaki and Shuji arrive they found Ruruka's security detail slaughtered and confront Mukuro. But she isn't alone, she is with an entire horde of lookalikes that attack them. But, despite their efforts, none of the Mukuro's are a match for Takumi and they begin to suffer heavy losses. Takumi is pretty angry since he considers them a bunch of cheap knockoffs that couldn't hope to compare to the real Mukuro. He gives them a 0/100 for their murders (putting on the same level as Kenji Tsuruhashi).

It's during this fight that Misaki is really grappling with the idea of Takumi being Killer Killer, not wanting him to kill them. She even goes out of her way to knock a few out with muscle relaxant ammo so that they could be taken in without need for killing...only for Takumi to save her from the last batch by slicing them in half. Confirming that he is Killer Killer once and for all in her mind....

And then a second later she gets stabbed by Shuji. Turns out he hired the cult as a form of shock therapy for Takumi, to get him to stop being Killer Killer, but that failed. He was going to kill Misaki, but several of the Future Foundation Directors and Ikue Dogami arrive on the scene. Shuji escapes by detonating a bomb inside the pocket of a Mukuro and using the explosion to run away. If the cult wasn't completely killed by Takumi, the survivors that were knocked out would have been arrested. No matter what, they are out of commission for the rest of the story.

The cult is pretty straightforward and all hold pretty much the same demeanor. They are a bunch of women that worship Mukuro Ikusaba and imitate her down to the T. They seem to act as mercenaries given Shuji was able to get their aid in his plot, and hold immense skill given just one is able to slaughter numerous security guards without effort. However, against Killer Killer, or even someone skilled with a gun, they are able to be taken down en masse, showing they still lag behind the original Mukuro. In battle, they are hyper focused on killing anyone in their path, even when hurt or other cultists die. They will not give up until someone has either killed them or knocked them out.

Rundown

In Killer Killer, if I were to provide it a theme, it would have to be Passion vs Shallowness. To have true drive for your profession and do things out of love for what you really want to do. That's Takumi's whole deal with his murders and what he criticizes the villains of Killer Killer for lacking, to varying degrees. Their passion isn't for murder, but using it as a means for their own goals.

In the cultists case, their Passion is Mukuro Ikusaba. Sadly, we never get a reason why they worship her, but it's clear they hold her in some mahor esteem given their appearance and actions. They are utterly devoted to the late Ultimate Soldier and giving it their all for her, even if it costs them greatly...

But Takumi ranks them 0. Putting them, in the same vein as Kenji who is really the epitome of the Shallowness theme. He kills out of a means for an end. No love for it at all besides the backlash it can cause others. No regards to people's lives, especially the one he stole. So why is the cult, who clearly hold a strong passion for something, strongly disliked by Takumi?

Well, he says it best:

They may love Mukuro, but they hold no true love for their actions. They're fangirls that commit atrocities to be like their idol, but with the case of some fans, utterly miss the point of what she's about in their quest to be like her. (Ironically, so is Takumi, but that is something for another time...). If Kenji is Shallowness to the extreme of just doing something for the practical benefit, the cultists of Mukuro are Shallowness to the extent that they are doing it out of obligation. 'If they want to be like Mukuro then clearly they have to kill whoever is in their sights!' In Takumi's eyes, it pretty much just reduced murder as apart of something to check off on a list if they want to be like someone's replica of all things. An extreme offense in Takumi's eyes, which is why he outrights fails him.

That isn't to say they don't succeed in being like their idol in some degree. Both the cultists and Mukuro were used as means to an end by the Masterminds of their respective entries. What separates them in turn is that Junko did legitimately love her sister, getting a euphoric sense of despair for killing someone she loved with all her heart (just like she got before when she killed her boyfriend).

Shuji, though, did not give a feather about them beyond their use in potentially getting Takumi to quit being Killer Killer. He leaves any potential survivors to be arrested, if they weren't slaughtered by Takumi, and even blows up a cultists body to escape from being arrested. While their idol was at least loved enough by her killer who used Mukuro's aid to alter their world forever, the imitations end up as just collateral damage in Shuji's pipe dream that only resulted in both Mastermind and his hired goons demises. It's the worst end by a long shot for them.

On a minor note, the cultists being taken care of so easily by both Takumi, and even dispatched by Misaki, also wraps back around the dilemma with the Madarai clan and the Despair Sisters issue of quality for quality. Danganronpa is a series that values individuals talent and being unique (even it can be detrimental). Trying to mimic someone else, while it can throw people off for a bit, will never work against someone genuinely being original and just makes yourself predictable to being outplayed. Again and again. It's funny how in their quest to be like Mukuro, the wound up making the same mistake Mukuro criticizes the Madarai of doing.

Personal Thoughts

As a concept, I love the Mukuro Cult! When it comes to Ultimate Despair, while it very much makes sense that Junko would be the head honcho revered by its members, the fact Mukuro (essentially its co-founder) was left by the wayside was a bit sad, though it made perfect sense.

But these guys? The fact Mukuro herself had an entire cult dedicated to her is amazing! Like with the Warriors of Hope for Junko, it gives the feeling that these girls were larger than life and had clear influence that still wreaked havoc on society even beyond the grave! It's a excellent idea...

But like with most things in Killer Killer, it's extremely undercooked. While Another Episode goes very in-depth to show why the Warriors worship Junko and love her to the point of being inspired by her to make their paradise/being a devious pickle gremlin, the cult gets nothing. No real reason why they worship Mukuro or how they got to perfectly look like her. They're just fakers who can't compare to Takumi and go down after pissing him off.

While not as bad as Ted's deal, the writing feels like they just wanted a shock factor for their brief screentime, rather than legitimately explore the concept in any meaningful capacity. What if they were women who were taken in by the Remnants, broken by society and given meaning by becoming Mukuro? Or maybe they somehow admired Mukuro being sacrificed for someone else, and wanted to become her to get a fate like that? Maybe they were girls that Mukuro ended up saving while during her Fenrir days so becoming her and carrying on her legacy, if misguided, was their way of honoring her?

There's so much you can do with this concept...and it went to waste just as fast. It's a pity, but what can you do?

Aftermath

Concerning this Killer Killer showcase from last time, while I do still believe Ted is just a flash without substance character, I also feel that I did lean a bit too hard with it in terms of my rundown and personal thoughts (I didn't even give the theme for Killer Killer for last time). So I wanted to be a bit more structured again and dial back more of my dislike of Killer Killer as a whole. Is it still the worst of the series to me? Yes, and I will call it out for that, but I don't want that to really get too much in the way of analysis for the casts of these guys. I hope this works out much better!

There are some who are considered to be very uptight or hard-working. And such people deserve a break every now and then (Even if they object to it). That's why Misaki, Miaya, Kotomi, Sachi, and Kasumi find themselves on a beach vacation! (Although Kasumi never brought up getting sunscreen from Makoto) Yes. These 5 needed a break away from the madness and make no mistake they aren't the only ones due for a vacation. However, nobody seemed to mention they were taking Makoto and where they would vacate to....;;;;;(人◕ω◕) It's probably fine. Misaki has a way with words.

Here's a pet peeve of mine that nobody asked for: it sucks that a boy and girl who are very close friends always have to be portrayed as romantic in some sort of way in Danganronpa. There's Kyoko/Makoto, Chiaki/Hajime, Kaede/Shuichi, Chisa/Kyosuke, Junko (Ryoko)/Yasuke, Misaki/Takumi, Peko/Fuyuhiko, and probably a few others i forgot to list. Some of these pairs are mostly implied, but still.

Also, this post is not meant to be bashing on these ships in any way, cuz most of them are pretty cute and harmless. I just wish we could have a genuine male/female friendship without any hint of attraction and romantic feelings. It can just come across as forced sometimes.

Though of course, Danganronpa is not the only franchise that has this trope.

EDIT: Yes, Shuichi/Maki and Makoto/Hina are platonic (not including bonus dating modes or free times, of course), but that's because they are already attracted to somebody anyway. Shuichi is already attracted to Kaede, Maki is to Kaito, and Makoto is implied to be attracted to Kyoko.

Literally the closest male/female best friend duo I could think of in the series that seems to be fully platonic (and them not having feelings for anyone else of the opposite sex) is Akane/Nekomaru. But even then, it's up to debate whether or not Akane was sexually attracted to him or not from the way she spoke about him by the end of DR2.

Chibi Mermay - Misaki

Since making Artworks for all the side characters would take me another 2-3 years I decided to take a shortcut and release their designs as Chibis instead. This way I can finish up the Mermaid series this year and start a new series afterwards!

I hope that’s still fine with everyone.

Misaki’s fins are based of a sealion.

I’m thinking about making these Stickers or Acrylic Charms in the future. I’d love to get some feedback from you guys, if anyone would be interested in that.

Salvage Showcase: Ted Chikatilo

Danganronpa Killer Killer...yeah.

If you weren’t aware of it before, I am not super fond of Killer Killer’s story. For me, it’s the worst entry in Danganronpa. If I had to describe its main problem, this showcase will probably be a good way to sum it up.

Summary

Ted Chikatilo is an enigmatic case. He’s a graduate from Hope’s Peak Academy that became known as an infamous serial killer during the Tragedy. His talent is being the Ultimate Pyrotechnician (or Pyrotechnist/Fireworks Artist according to some translations) and its unknown what class batch he was in. It’s unknown if he was a serial killer during or even before he entered Hope’s Peak.

During the Tragedy his main form of killing was by slaughtering people with his fireworks. Sometimes by shoving one into a person’s mouth and causing that to explode, more frequently by using an arm cannon that he somehow crafted himself to shoot out his deadly rockets. He’s known as a Million Killer, the same as Remnants of Despair.

Ted was namedropped in chapter 2 as being the killer Misaki and Mekuru sought after for the parasite killings (but that wasn’t actually the case, it was someone else that Takumi would kill in the chapter). From there, he makes a reoccurring appearance in chapters 3-6 of Killer Killer, acting as essentially the first real ‘boss’ Takumi has to defeat and seemingly the one to kidnap both girls. Ted wants to be the one to kill the Killer Killer and properly meets him at the Killing Festival, an underground serial killer gambling ring. He interrupts a match between Takumi and Juzo, who was disguised as Ted to infiltrate the place and confirm an investigation on Takumi’s status as Killer Killer (and was the actual one to kidnap both Misaki and Mekuru). Ted escapes the Festival and has Takumi meet him up top of a skyscraper, appearing after Takumi killed another killer - Kenji Tsuruhashi.

Ted and Takumi fight, with Ted seemingly getting the upperhand thanks to use of his brainwashing fireworks – spectacles so amazing that it leaves one immobilized, lost in a cutesy, childish hallucination of talking bunnies and bears. He even gets Misaki, one of the protagonists, trapped in it as well. But before he could kill him Takumi intervenes, having only pretended to have been brainwashed to avoid revealing his status as Killer Killer to Misaki.

Ted is ranked 65 out of 100. While Takumi admires his dedication to his craft, he points out Ted only has love for his ‘lame fireworks’. This ticks off Ted enough to shoot a barrage at Takumi, who deflects it back at Ted. As he dies in the explosion, he laughs wondering if he’ll be able to shine beautifully.

In general, Ted is a showman obsessed with his own fireworks and cruel sadism. He only wants to see them go off, killing others in a mix of gore and beautfiul explosions. He holds his talent in very high regards and its to the point that calling his craft lame is enough to set him off.

Rundown/Personal Thoughts

Now Ted here is one of many of Killer Killer’s wasted cast and best represents the manga’s main theme in a rather ironic note:

All flash and no substance.

He’s an Ultimate!!! He’s also a mad bomber that loves killing people with his fireworks and can brainwash people with them!! He’s a showman! He’s...he’s...

Got nothing aside from that. It’s not even hyperbole, he just...has nothing else to him. I mean, its clear the artist had fun drawing expressions for him so good to know someone got enjoyment from doing their job?

Normally, I would divide the rundown/analysis portion and my personal thoughts, but when you have a character is this determined to be one trait only, there isn’t anything to analyze? I mean, I could say Ted is a reflection of Hope’s Peak students hyperfocusing on their talents, but literally every other entry, Hell even DR3, did it way better and had it really hit the character that suffered from it. Ted’s just a prideful douchebag with an explosive fetish. That’s the only thing Killer Killer is concerned with for him and I don’t feel the need to extract meaning for a character the writer didn’t want to give.

He’s almost insultingly shallow for a guy that’s here for, if you considered that namedrop in chapter 2, nearly half of Killer Killer’s story. The story acts like he’s important, but sure doesn’t want to spend time truly making him so.

Heck, that’s pretty much the theme with Killer Killer in a nutshell. It’s insultingly shallow and impressively ballsy with how it usually avoids wanting to flesh out its own concepts and characters. Especially with Ted, because even the other killers got at least something to explain why they’re doing what they do. Even if for some its batshit insane. And its not even an issue of the writers being unable to flesh out a character, since the very chapter Ted debuts in we get a good chunk of the story revolving around the villain of the week’s motivations. So the writer can make it work and with how long Ted was around, it could have worked...but God do they choose not to work at all.

Ted just shows up, blows stuff up, fight Takumi and dies. It’s like the writer was enamored with the ‘idea’ of a mad bomber Ultimate...but it stops there. They wanted an explosive fight and nothing else. In a series like Danganronpa, where its stories revolve around how the cast feels and develops in bleak situations, shallowness like this sticks out like a sore thumb.

Why did Ted become a mad bomber? Why’s he attacking Future Foundation or wanting to personally fight Killer Killer? Is he maybe apart of the class batch of one of the Directors of Future Foundation. Perhaps he could have connected with the Killing Festival? Be a Host of it or something? How did he make his weapons?

Interesting questions like these are stuff that Killer Killer either refuses to do in favor of pretty fights.

Eugh.

I finished Killer Killer btw. General thoughts:

As someone whose favorite DR media is Zero (and thinks that IF is like. solid), I was kind of hoping it would be more on that level in terms of writing 😔

That said, I'm honestly not *that* bothered by the writing issues. It's kind of the same as with dr3 for me, where I'm not invested enough in the first place to feel let down when it doesn't make sense. I'm more just "ok so we're doing this now" about it, and then am pleasantly surprised whenever the writing is good

Hijirihara is by far my favorite character introduced in this. It makes me sad that afaik he only appears in Killer Killer because he's So Much. Creative choice of coping mechanism over here

I REALLY like how much influence Hijirihara's trauma has on Everything. I feel like normally if a DR character survives a killing school life, they'll probably only return in a supporting role and and there isn't much focus on their recovery. Like even with Makoto in dr3 and Toko in UDG, they're are obviously scarred by their experiences and all but. It's not like the primary focus of either media, and each has to deal with Topical Plot Issues that take precedence over their past (I suppose Soshun in dr0 is an exception since basically all he does is Be Traumatized, but like he's hardly a main character. He's really only around long enough for Matsuda to kill him over it)

In Killer Killer though, the entire plot is driven by what Hijirihara's been through. There would be no Killer Killer if his experiences at Giboura hadn't driven him to take on that role

Can't say I'm exactly a fan of Fujigawa given how cartoon villain I'll kill everyone-y he gets at the end but. The character feels like he could've had potential if he was written in a less over the top way, yk?

Like the flashback scenes of him and Hijirihara are definitely some of my favorites in this manga. Also ik this is silly but near the end when Fujigawa has trouble getting out of the locker and Hijirihara does that little "it's a boy" gag, it's like. You still care about him enough to be jokey huh. Argh. If Fujigawa's characterization had been played a little differently I would be going insane rn over these two

I do prefer the earlier slice of life stuff, but I feel like them trying to turn when the story is set into a plot twist was a mistake. It just makes the beginning seem bizarre in retrospect once you know that this is supposed to be post apocalypse. Why is everything So Normal society seems a bit too functional here

On the topic of the timeline. I wish they made character's ages more clear sometimes. Like since Kyoko + Hijirihara are coworkers, are we supposed to assume he's the same age as class 78? Aka, when Junko had Mukuro stab all those middle schoolers to death, were J+M still middle schoolers themselves? (wouldn't exempt them from blame ofc but I do feel like it's an important distinction)

Fave Killer Killer execution was definitely the copycat one. I <3 Hijirihara's little Monokuma grin there

Sidenote a lot of Killer Killer's victims remind me so much of how Mikan acted in dr2 chapter 3 with how outlandish they are. I feel certain that at least some of them were acting under the influence of Junko's brainwashing (I'm thinking more of how brainwashing victims in dr0/dr2 are depicted, like as undeniably altered but not without free will/opinions of their own. As opposed to like the dr3 remnants or the Monokuma kids in UDG)

Wish there was more focus on Asano. She gets set up like the main character at the very beginning but is pretty quickly demoted to Hijirihara's sidekick/love interest/damsel in distress. She NEEDS more personality and an actual backstory and a life outside of him :/
