4 anime characters I know of who deserved better!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alois Trancy - I don’t care if he isn’t canon, this poor traumatised boy deserves a much better story than what we got in season 2. I feel the only way for him to have a second chance is to be put into the manga.
Marco Bodt - Our beloved freckled angel (literally) may be the main reason why Jean got amazing character development, but I still wished we got to see him more. Or at least give them both character development if he were kept alive.
Misa Amane - It’s understandable why everyone hates her like Alois, she’s the Harley Quinn of Death Note. I feel like she should’ve gotten a mini arc of realising how awful Light was to her and get over him. Sadly the show doesn’t care about females.
Carly Carmine - After rewatching the show, I noticed what a downgrade she got in season 2 much like Akiza and the twins. There is a whole controversy behind that but still, it’s sad to see her and her relationship with Jack go down the drain out of nowhere.

I really wish that Misa was faking the whole naive and "dumb" thing. Like I think it's crazy nobody ever considered the potential that it was an act, like you think this girl is a mass murder but can't for a second think she's not an "idiot"???

"we need more traumatized women characters with cptsd and are abuse victims that are actually portrayed realistically and don't always show symptoms that are 'cute', 'soft' or 'pretty'!!!" y'all couldn't even handle erica from gangsta.

Guys I can’t believe that it’s canon that Misa breaks up with Light’s ass and gets a badass shinigami girlfriend instead 🥰

Why has some kind of death note renaissance popped up out of nowhere. Why am I seeing "was light right, y/n" discourse in 2024 with my own two eyes. Where am I.

actually its so hard to get into death note as an adult. you have to be a teen and think L and light are the coolest and then revisit that obsession later as an adult and realize its a comedy

Misa deserved so much better, honestly.
I don’t care how annoying she was, she deserved nothing Light put her through.

Fandom femmephobia seriously needs to be talked about more.
We know all female characters face fandom misogyny of all times, but no one talks about how sometimes fandom will mercilessly rag on and hate the more conventionally feminine female characters the most, how often those people will dismiss the feminine female characters as shallow and stupid, how often they see them as weak, scheming bitches, or as mean girls, while praising a more masculine female character in a positive way or as “not like other girls”.
Like, aside from the whole Sansa Stark scenario that is decades old, there is also the Disney Princess fandom with how they treat the earlier princesses(Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora) as weak and nothing more than damsels-in-distress, ignoring the fact that they, Cinderella in particular, show that kindness, softness, and vulnerability don’t automatically equal weakness, that female characters don’t have to be warriors or aggressive or stereotypical “strong independent women” to be strong. And how they were all forced into traumatizing situations, Cinderella was literally ABUSED with nowhere to go while Snow White was a fourteen-year-old girl being hunted down to be killed because her stepmother envied her beauty, and Aurora was cursed at birth because an evil fairy wasn’t invited to a party. And yet they remained kind, optimistic, and strong through it all. But go on about how they are weak and passive role models for little girls. And often this is coupled with treating Mulan, Merida, and Pocahontas as better and placing them in the “not like other girls” category because they take on more traditionally masculine roles and are praised for being tomboys in comparison to the more girly princesses(when Mulan and Pocahontas aren’t even tomboys), especially Merida just because she doesn’t sing or have a love interest, as if singing to birds or falling in love makes you weak.
People also love to do this with Ariel and Rapunzel, writing them off as shallow cardboard cutouts, pretending Ariel only wanted to be human for a guy or that Rapunzel was a weak fragile damsel in distress who needed saving by Flynn from her tower, ignoring the fact that she tied him up and forced him to take her to see the floating lanterns, even threatening him with her frying pan again when he tried to back out of the deal. And it is her compassion and willingness to dream that stop the hypermasculine ruffians and thugs at the Snuggly Duckling to stop their mindless violence and open up about their own hobbies(some of which are seen as traditionally feminine!). But a lot of you don’t seem to be willing to realize that!
Even in the Encanto fandom, this attitude prevails. Look at how Isabela and Dolores are often demonized and villainized by the fandom, how Isabela’s issues are all brushed aside in favor of seeing her as just a one-note mean girl, how Dolores is seen as the “true villain” of the movie(and how I’ve seen more than one people say that Dolores is someone who “intentionally” goes after married men because of her prophecy), how Pepa is often demonized for her emotions when being highly emotional is often seen as a stereotypically feminine trait, and how fans often gloat about how Luisa merch outsells Isabela merch by portraying Luisa as a “not like other girls/strong female character” and Isabela as just a pretty face and only being there to look beautiful, because “haha well would you look at that, little girls want the masculine strong girl and not the feminine pretty girl!”, while also masculinizing Luisa at the same time. Or how they’ll say they hate Isabela because they’re tired of “pretty slim girly pink princesses” as if being that way is an insult or a bad thing. Plus there are many fans even today who think that Isabela herself is not like other girls because she breaks out of the norm of perfection in the end, and mistaking it for breaking out of femininity. Because obviously femininity is a trap that renders girls weak and docile and obedient and incapable of being themselves or more than pretty ornaments to be looked at, and the only way to be independent and strong and embrace your individuality and do what you wanna do is by ditching your femininity and being masculine, right?
It’s just annoying to witness and I wish it would stop. Let’s please stop shitting on female characters for being traditionally feminine/pretty/glamorous/soft/compassionate and prioritizing traditionally masculine traits of aggression/violence/stoicism. You can be strong and also be feminine, and embarrassingly this obviously true fact still falls on deaf ears. Let’s do better as fandoms, people. Not just the Encanto fandoms, but fandoms across the board.

i may get shot for this but personally i dont think theres really anything wrong with death note's female characters
#the worst thing is rlly just that there arent that many of them. but i dont think thats like unforgivable#i like misa and i think shes a great character. i keep seeing ppl being like she deserved better i wish she had better writing etc#and thats valid but also i. dont ger that at all personally. i think shes a really good character imo#like yeah shes sort of a stereotypical The Girl but thats not like inherently a bad thing. girls like that exist#and like yes her whole thing is she only wants to be of service to light. but like.... thats ADDRESSED. its treated as a bad thing#it'd be bad if her only purpose was to serve light and that was just not addressed. but thats like the whole point of her character that#it sucks that she thinks thats all shes worth and that she has to encounter light who only plays into that and makes it worse#to the point of her being completely dependent on him and killing herself once hes dead#shes a tragedy. that if she hadnt met light she wouldve probably survived and might have been able to work past her issues#but light fucked all that up#i think thats super interesting and cool and like yeah shes not the greatest character ever#but idk i dont get that complaint. her only purpose being to serve light is the whole point. its viewed as a bad thing#BTW THIS IS NOT ME DEFENDING THE AUTHOR. i know one of his later works has some extremely blatant and awful sexism in it FUCK HIM!#but idk with death note specifically. in a void apart from its author#i think the few female characters it has are fine. idk#serena.txt

I see you out here posting Sparrabeth content 👀 what do you think about the comparisons of L to Jack and Misa to Elizabeth?
No but, I saw you liking them and was about to dm you to see if you wanted to talk about this lol
Where to start? There's so much to say. When comparing them I realize, hell maybe I do gave a type!
The obvious first, they're both ships with wasted potential. They also give me the vibes of het ship for queer people (the counterpairs being het ships for straight people) if that make sense.
Physically, they're very pretty much the same, taller dark-haired man, shorter blonde woman + they both have a big age gap, one significantly bigger than the other (lawmane 7 years and sparrabeth 22 years if I remember correctly).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When speaking to each other, they almost always seem to be so unnecessarily close, specially Jack and L, that have no problem getting into Lizzy and Misa's face and invade their personal space.
Both L and Jack are seen by other characters as eccentric and weird and their sometimes cold and questionable actions provokes either admiration or contempt, while Misa and Elizabeth are judged first by their beauty and most characters seem to think of them as innocent naive girls, not aware of their dark side. L and Jack seem to be the ones that really see through them and can see the darkness behind those beautiful eyes. I really don't think Light and Will (their canon love interests) truly knew them, Light just knew enough to manipulate her and not let her become a threat, and Will for example always seemed surprised by Elizabeth's actions.
What the four of them have in common is that they're willing to do morally questionable stuff to get what they want/need.
Sparrabeth have an insane amount of sexual tension, eyefucking all around, Lawmane tho it's more subtle, as it's been pointed out (shout out to @gigantomachy1916 analysis of L, Misa and Sex in Death Note) L has only had shown sexual interest in Misa, in some scenes were faked, but others is undeniable.
Their dynamics are pretty alike as well, but their fanon dynamic are near identical. In fact, being the obsessive weirdo I am, having reading the majority of the fics on each ship's AO3 tag, I took notice of every similarity. Funny how two ships of completely different fandoms with completely different plots have so much in common.
They're both given the same tropes in most fics: Enemies to Lovers (for Lawmane it may go Enemies to Friends to Lovers, for Sparrabeth Friends to Enemies to Lovers), Unrequited Love, Infidelity/Cheating, First Time/Loss of Virginity, Not Your Damsel In Distress, Birds of a Feather, Deflecting for Love or Dating Catwoman (depends on the fic, Jack is not really the villian on most fics, but the world around Elizabeth sees it this way), I'm sure there's more that I'm forgetting, but you get my point.
Another thing both fandoms have in common as seen through fic as well as posts, is that we both believe Misa and Elizabeth deserved better, and these ships allows us to give them that, it's also very clear we care more about giving our girls what they deserve rather than the romanticism (tho of course, that is a big part of it too). I've not seen a Sparrabeth fic where Elizabeth is treated as just a housewife-child bearer (like canon) or a Lawmane fic where Misa becomes L's unwanted useless sidekick (basically replacing Light's role in her life), most fics take the time to explore why these girls are so great and likeable, why they should have been allowed more power and autonomy, why they had the potential to be more. I mean, Misa not only had the eyes of a Shinigami, she also had a Shinigami completely devoted to her, yet they decided to make her a sillu girl too in love with a guy to take advantage of it (I think Misa is smarter than she lets on) and Elizabeth was made Pirate King, you mean to tell me she's gonna drop that title to live the life she never wanted? And for a man she's only going to see once every 10 years? And they wonder why we run for these ships instead.
I'm making a post about how I think Sparrabeth's relationship would have gone and how I don't believe they'd be a conventional couple, but that doesn't mean they'd be unhappy, quite the contrary, same thing could be said about Lawmane.
And this one only aplies to me, but they're also the kind of ships where I can't ship the canon pair but I ship the male character with their love rival lol a.k.a Lawlight and Wil x Jack (do they have a ship name??)
+Bonus comparisons:

"I'm totally kidding,,, unless?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sure it's really normal to talk this close to someone you don't want to kiss
Sorry if I rambled a lot lol TL;DR, Lawmane and Sparrabeth are more similiar than one could think, should have been endgame and deserve more recognition than they get
I would like to know what you think too!
