Lost “Lore”: Creature Codex
Back during Guild Wars 2′s Beta Weekend Events in 2012, there was a system that would unfortunately get removed. One that players have since asked for time and time again. It was actually nicely implemented too, however, it had some major flaws.
The Creature Codex.
These were books bought from various NPCs throughout the game that talked about various factions and world bosses. In the betas, we only got to see those found in Queensdale, Wayfarer, and Plains of Ashford.
Tumblr media
When used, you’d open up a brief cinematic that would cycle through three paragraphs and show off a model of the faction (or the world boss) in question, giving players a blurb text about the subject.
It wasn’t super fancy, but from what text was able to be recovered by players, it did add some stuff that is unique - for example, did you know that there are male harpies? I didn’t. For a few years, I had theorized that they mated with other races to reproduce as an all-female race, similar to asari from Mass Effect, since we see multiple events of harpies “flirting” with grawl, asura, and others.
Tumblr media
One of the major failing factors was that each book of the creature codex, when used for the first time, would give the character a skill point (predecessor of the current hero point, which were given every time you leveled up or completed a skill challenge - now hero challenge). This made getting skill points obscenely easy, because codex books could also be put into the bank’s storage section (just like miniatures back in the day). This meant that you could find all the codexes on one character, open them, bank them, swap characters, and pull them from banks to get all those free easy skill points.
If memory serves me right, these skill points also served as skill challenges, meaning that it was instant progress on map completion as well.
I’m sure that’s not the only (or main) reason they were cut down. ArenaNet is very big on making features look pretty and function uniquely and well, so it’s possible these were cut because of how basic the cinematics look - a simple background, a model, and text that you can’t control isn’t very much to look at.
Tumblr media
Still, here’s hoping that one day ArenaNet will make a proper codex function for all the Points of Interest, factions, species, and major characters out there.

The Illuminator
The Broken Scribe
Jabin Hazor was once a great artist. He was famous amongst the Word Bearers and their imperial cults for his miniature illustrations. Jabin brought a visual beauty to the written word with a delicate love and careful dedication. A rare characteristic for an Astartes. From the Codex Gigas which four men needed to carry. To the hermit’s hymn book; no bigger than a thumb.. So beautiful was his work that he was even responsible for the illuminations in some of Lorgar’s most popular works.
Like many of his brothers the destruction of Monarchia left a mark on Jabin’s soul that would never close. To see his art discarded, either burned or left to rot on a shelf. It broke him. So when his primarch began his new works the broken scribe was all too willing to throw himself into the work. The Book of Lorgar. Jabin went on many pilgrimages with his primarch. Uncovering ancient archives and delving into lost libraries. The Aurellian shared many secret works with his scribe. Alien diagrams, strange geometries and proscribed artworks.
But what the Lorgar found does not neatly fit inside the human mind. Not even the transhuman. What Lorgar wished to share was not meant to be conveyed by our arts. To give form to the formless; to convey meaning from primordial chaos. It comes at a price. No one knows what happened to Jabin Hazor in those late hours. Some say his illuminations summoned something. Others say the work drove him mad. All that is known was that Jabin was found as a bloody ruin before his completed work. The broken scribe indeed.
Jabin Hazor was a great warrior as well as artist and a legionnaire so close to a primarch was greatly respected. So it was decided that Jabin would be interred within a dreadnought chassis. A cruel jest by the universe for gentle Jabin Hazor. He strides into battle now bound in the words of his primarch. Banners of parchment and vellum of unspeakable origin. Reliquaries and triptychs containing demonic bones and powerful spells. The greatest irony is the mace that has replaced the right hand of the artist that was. A crude and thrice cursed weapon dripping with witchfire. Its touch could melt iron and burn flesh and with a deft swing, the warp born flames would spray anyone who strayed too close.
After this none could really say how sane the dreadnought was. Ranting and raving; sliding between poetry, riddles and unknown tongues. And yet, there were those that listened. Whatever the secret language is, the neverborn speak it. A sharp eye can catch the Gal Vorbak watching him. Demons turn at the sound of his sermons and even infernal engines paused when he spoke.
Mercy to those who witness the works of Jabin Hazor’s right hand. Either the pen or the maul.

Ugh, man, I slept okay last night, but I was interrupted by a cramp.
It's so embarrassing to go from horrible, agonizing pain back to feeling compeltely fine in like 30 seconds. Still have a little twinge, it was right on the back of my calf, very odd.
Workin' from home again today. Don't know how much I'm really gonna get done in these last two days before my long vacation. I get 11 days off in a row! All next week, and then monday of the following week for New Years Day.
I've been getting back into Warhammer 40k lately, just a bit. Someone I follow on tumblr (you know who you are :P) got really into it recently, mostly Necrons because of some books (The Infinite and The Divine, I believe). That got me curious, so I looked up what's new. Apparently they're on the TENTH edition now, which is wild. There are a bunch more Imperial factions... and exactly one new Xenos faction (space dwarves are back!).
I was super into Warhammer when I was like 7-10 years old. Not, like, playing the game, obviously, but reading rulebooks and lore and whatnot. I remember I somehow had a Citadel Miniatures Catalogue for like 1997, used to just sit around looking through it. Plus a bunch of issues of White Dwarf, of course. I was way into Chaos Space Marines, I got that codex and absolutely loved it. Had so much cool art and little snippets of fiction.
40k was in its second edition, and I remember with third edition came out and started introducing these wild new plastic model kits. Almost everything was metal back then. That edition change was the first big attempt to simplify the game, as it was wildly complicated before. The vehicle rules were incomprehensible, many units had whole pages of special rules, there were tons of percentile tables to roll on, scatter dice, etc. But third edition slimmed everything down and introduced a lot of suffocating structure to army rules that I didn't like.
Looking at the new rules, it seems like things have swung back in the other direction a bit in the intervening years. Or, at least, they've ended up back there in the latest course correction. Army-building rules are very loose, and all the rules about resolving combat are very simple now. The focus of complexity is on these like... tactical maneuvers, which I still don't quite understand. Seems to works similarly to how magic worked in Warhammer Fantasy back in the day.
Speaking of, I'm still mad that that game is essentially dead. Age of Sigmar is lame. Lame, I say! It seems bizarre that GW decided to kill it when that Total War game was gaining steam, but whatever.
Anyway, I haven't like bought any models, I'm not going crazy. Just bought an Adeptus Mechanicus codex. I like the look of their models, it's really cool that they're finally a proper army faction. Especially the Kastelan Robots, I love the idea that they just... found these ancient, invincible robots and strapped guns to 'em. In 2nd edition, there would definitely be some insane rules where you had to roll to maintain control of them or they'd wander in a random (scatter dice!) direction every turn....

The Codex Gigas, also known as The Devil’s Bible, is the world's largest and the most mysterious medieval manuscript since the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis. Once considered the eighth wonder of the world, the pages are allegedly made from the skins of 160 maladjusted donkeys.
Tumblr media
According to the Codex legend, the single scribe was a monk who had breached his monastic code by playing loud music and going out on school nights. So he was sentenced to be walled up ALIVE --- with no chance of escape. There was only one way the monk could avoid his excruciating death --- if he promised to create a beautiful and fascinating book to glorify the monastery forever, that would also include all human knowledge plus a Sudoku.
Tumblr media
There was one catch: the monk was given only twenty-four hours to complete the task, but if he did --- he'd be free to live.
Tumblr media
The monk began to compose a bible written on animal skins peeled off all the fastfood he'd had delivered that week, using colored inks and detailed illustrations; it was completely illuminated with decorated initials and miniature border artwork in the manuscript style made during that era. Legend has it that near midnight the monk became sure that he could not complete this task alone, so he ordered pizza before they closed, and sold his soul to the devil for help.
Tumblr media
The devil's design skills and hourly affirmations helped complete the manuscript --- so that the monk added the devil's picture out of gratitude. It's because of this unique illustration plus English is easier to pronounce and remember, that the Codex Gigas is also known as The Devil's Bible.

Perhaps the oldest miniature book? Two parchment leaves - with the Song of Songs 4:12-14 and 5:8-9 - from a miniature codex, in a fine Sahidic Coptic uncial script, from Upper Egypt, early 5th century. Each leaf measures approximately 53 by 59mm.
Two further leaves survive from this same codex, once in the collection of P. Ramón Roca-Puig (1906-2001, papyrologist and priest), and bequeathed by him to the library of the abbey of Santa Maria de Monserrat, near Barcelona, where he spent his final years. The monastery leaves were published as S.T. Tovar, Biblica Coptica Montserratensia: P. Monts. Roca II, pp. 55-58, with Song of Songs, 4:8-9 and 8:2-4; and without knowledge of these here.

Any one else giving WarhammerPlus a go?
So I signed up to WarhammerPlus for a couple of months to see if it’s any good...
...well that’s a bit of a lie... I signed up for WarhammerPlus in the hopes of winning “all their Paints & Tools”
Tumblr media
So bearing in mind, I still have fond memories of painting back in ‘94. We had about 8 different colours to choose from... a little different to the variety (and quality) we have now.
However, it’s now 14th of February and I’m not feeling the love... because I don’t think I won? I’ve tried tweeting the fine folks at Warhammer but I just get ignored.
Any way, whilst I have it I’ve been trying to remember to use it as it does seem to have both “Great”, “Could be better” and “Would be good if I had any friends” stuff on there.
The entire way it’s structured is a bit bad. There are three parts to it from what I can tell, each scattered into their own separate areas.
Warhammer TV.
This is their video section of the subscription. They have some excellent cartoons. Hammer & Bolter seems to be great at telling different stories from different factions of the 40K universe.
Tumblr media
Some tutorials explaining how to play their games (outside of HeroQuest, I’ve never actually ever played a Games Workshop game. Doesn’t help I have no one to play with). A lot of these look like Games that take an entire day to play.
Tumblr media
Then they have other stuff like the Citadel Colour Masterclass, which tries to help you with Painting tutorials... they make it all look so easy.
It would be nice if you could have an APP on the LG store that allows you to watch it direct on the TV, however, you can just stream it to your TV from you App on your phone or tablet I guess.
Warhammer 40,000 “THE APP”.
This looks like it will be good if you play the 40K. As it’s got all the stats and rules for each army and character. So would be useful to bring each one up on a tablet, rather than rifling through a Codex each and every move.
Tumblr media
(Don’t get me wrong.. I love Warhammer Codex Books... I’ve just started collecting them. I don’t play the game (would like to) I just like the books and the pretty pictures inside) also... I still prefer the 90s Space Wolves heroes.
Warhammer Vault.
This. This is where, I think it really falls on it’s ass.
The idea of having White Dwarf issues, in PDF format, you can view online is a fantastic idea. Not only are we getting the newer ones, but we also have access to the older 2005 and upwards (they really need to do the ones from the mid 90s though). I would quite happy pay the £5 a month for the White Dwarfs and their back catalog.
Tumblr media
HOWEVER. I like most people am not going to sit and read a PDF magazine, on my computer. (OK it’s useful for scrolling through and looking at the pretty pictures). When you run this on a tablet it is slow (if it loads at all). I’ve tried this on multiple brands of tablets and it’s awful. Trying to load an entire magazine as a embedded PDF in a browser. Would the better solution not be for them to have their own PDF viewing app? or integrate with Amazon Kindle? or something better than a browser.
It makes me so frustrated, do the people that put this together, not go home and test it for themselves? Hire me. I’ll tell you how to run your company I know little about...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It looks like the Paints have gone through several releases since I used them in the mid 90s. Also yes. I am a fan of Space Wolves..
Other than Warhammer-Vault rarely works very well on a tablet. It is a brilliant idea. I hope they do manage to sort their own PDF reader App out - at the very least, an offline mode.
Oh yeah - there was one more thing. If you subscribe for a year, you get the choice of a ‘free’ miniature :
Tumblr media
Currently you can get Azrakh the Annihilator for Warhammer 40K or Mobyllorr Darkfang for Warhammer Fantasy Warhammer Age of Sigmar. But you have to wait a full year (and pay the £60) before you’ll see it. By then I’m hoping my painting will of improved enough to risk putting brush to figure. That’s another thing... at some point between the mid-90s and 2022, it stopped being Warhammer Fantasy, and is now called “Age of Sigmar”. Now back in my day. We didn’t call the store Warhammer, we called it Games Workshop, and a pound coin was called a golden queen. There were only 4 days in a week, back then we didn’t call them a day, we called them a quarter moon turn...

..end of ramblings...
