“BC’s most outstanding youth musicians” - my first time in an honour wind ensemble
It is every dedicated musician’s desire to play in an honour band. For serious and passionate musicians, there’s nothing like the rush of intense excitement that comes when performing pieces of great musical expression and technical difficulty with other musicians of the same mindset. For many, this kind of feeling can’t be found in their regular school band programs.
Luckily, I had the very fortunate opportunity to perform in an honour band recently, which was the provincial honour wind ensemble hosted by the British Columbia Music Educators’ Association (BCMEA) under the conducting of a very prestigious conductor. It was through this event that I was able to feel that exact rush of intense excitement. It was a feeling I’ve never felt before, and it was honestly very fulfilling. I felt humbled as a musician, especially with the given title described by my guest conductor as “the best of the best”.
Tumblr media
In this picture from the performance, I’m seated in the back row with my trombone two from the right of the first trumpeter. This occurrence was a culmination of two months of intensive playing and re-recordings of the same two excerpts followed by another two months of tentative waiting for a response to my recorded audition. The only way to be placed in this provincial honour ensemble is to play online excerpts to the best of your ability and to submit them along with a couple of administration forms. Despite my anxiety, I was excited to hear back from the association whether or not I’ve been accepted into the ensemble.
It was in late June when I was been told that I’ve been placed in this year’s BCMEA honour ensemble.
Man, I was so happy that day. I couldn’t stop re-reading the acceptance letter and the text from my music teacher. Something as big as this has never happened in my life until then, and it felt extremely good to know that your hard work (and in my case, over one hundred recordings of the same three pieces) has paid off.
And then I waited until October, which was when the honour ensemble was going to come together, rehearse, and perform.
Though these feelings of joy and excitement initially existed, they didn’t truly resurface until the day before the performance, which was the second day of rehearsals. I personally found the first day of rehearsals to be very overwhelming and stressful for a number of reasons.
For one, I could tell right away that the ensemble was made up of very serious musicians- nearly everyone who was in the rehearsal was obviously very skilled with their instruments. In fact, the first trombonist was my age, and he was the principal trombonist of the Vancouver Academy of Music’s youth orchestra! He had an amazing tone, technique, and was also very charismatic. But other than that, the atmosphere of these rehearsals was different from that of my regular school band classes because everyone in that honour ensemble actually cared about rehearsing. It was intense. As well, though I was happy to be surrounded by so many people who cared about the goal at hand like I did, I didn’t feel like I deserved it. In comparison to most who were there, I was relatively untrained and lacking of skills that were of the same level as them. I had a decent range, I knew most of my rhythms and elements of music theory, my tone and technique were good enough. But I wasn’t of great talent like that principal trombonist.
I’ll be honest- I felt very insecure. Being suddenly surrounded by so much talent and dedication hit me hard with awe and insecurity. It was nothing like I’ve experienced before in my six years of playing in a concert wind ensemble, and it affected me in both bad and good ways. It affected me negatively in the way that I doubted my own playing and regretted not taking chances from my earlier years to get exponentially better at my instrument like the others there. I thought that my acceptance into this honour ensemble was a mistake. I went home from that first day of rehearsal with a heavy heart, a pulsating forehead, and tearing eyes. I was frustrated and horrible.
Despite that, things lifted the next day after taking a moment to reflect on the positive side of things. I came to realize that I was chosen out of many other youth trombonists in the province for the obvious reason that I’m good enough. I learned to fully accept that I’m not as experienced as other youth musicians and that I could take inspiration from them and learn to become better. I even made acquaintances with a couple of people from there and learned how to do certain techniques exclusive to the low brass instrument. I was beginning to enjoy myself halfway through that day.
With the mental aspect of my experience set aside, there was the learning part of being in an honour ensemble as well. The guest conductor for that year was coincidentally my own band director’s university professor, and I came to admire him very much. The guest conductor is a very reputable man in the wind ensemble world and after being conducted by him for three days, I could see why he was considered prestigious. Though sometimes strict, his style of conducting was very immersive and musically expressive; he’d make us get up and do certain actions to instill a way to count difficult time signatures more easily and would also instruct us to change parts of the written music according to his liking. I can say that I’ve become a better musician with better playing habits.
The two and a half days of rehearsing led to the night of the concert, and my God was it an unforgettable experience. The resonance of the venue was warm and vibrant, and hearing that elongated ring of our sounds was very satisfactory. The warm and final cutscene of a movie-like atmosphere made me excited to perform. I was proud to be there among other people who were like me, and the fact that the night of our performance was sold out only excited me more.
youtube
The above is an excerpt from our performance, in which we played the ensemble version of Sleep by Eric Whitacre. This piece, among the others we had performed that night, had given me very warm and soul-fulfilling feelings. I hold this moment in life dearly because in a way it had fulfilled my dead dream of becoming a musical performer. There was a time among my high school years where I seriously considered becoming a musician after high school. But since then, my prospects have changed and the potential path towards becoming a musician was closed off for me. Thinking how that night was a reflection of how my post-secondary future could’ve been if I was a little more serious about music when I was younger brought me close to crying during the finale of our repertoire, which was the last movement of Percy Grainger’s iconic Lincolnshire Posy.
youtube
The night of our performance seemed like the quickest twenty minutes of my life. Before I knew it, it was over- the magic was gone, the chairs and stands were wheeled away, and the performers of the honour concert choir came to fill the empty stage. Though I longed to be back on there with my people, I heavily enjoyed the concert choir’s performance.
youtube
Like how the BCMEA website puts it, this night was truly a showcase of “BC’s most outstanding youth musicians”. To this day, I still cannot believe that I had the opportunity to be among so many talented musicians of my age and to work with what is the “best of the best”. It was an unforgettable experience that I hope to go through again someday.

Marley Kelly #1
Tumblr media
Imagine...
His tan skin burned against hers, kisses being exchanged between the pair feverishly. Their textbooks open and long forgotten on a chapter of the French Revolution or something or other lay in a piled heap on the floor. Sighing gently Y/N smiled, “You’re a very bad influence Mr Kelly.” Marley simply grinned lazily in response before moving to kiss the girl again“I’ll have you know I’m the Headboy” he whispered in the y/h/c girls ear his hot breath tickling at her pale neck.
“Y/N are you home?” Tom called out closing the door behind him his blue eyes flickering over the hallway looking for the denim jacket the eldest Grainger usually left lying around after a day of hard grafting. “Mika and Chlo are out for the night so it’s just us. I was wondering if you wanted to get a pizza in or something?” still shrugging his coat off Tom didn’t notice the silence that greeted him.
Upstairs the two teens shared a look of panic, what were they meant to do now. Tom didn’t exactly like the Kelly’s at the moment nor did he like the fact that the girls were growing up so quickly after Izzie’s tragic death. “Quick hide.” Y/N hissed shoving the boy off her bed as the y/h girl frantically adjusted her skirt. “What?” Marley whispered back attempting to signal at the lack of hiding space twirling swiftly around to face him Y/N shrugged “I don’t know under the bed or something..” Marley sighed moving forward to kiss the girl again wanting just one last second of nirvana.
“Y/N?” Tom called again this time walking up the stairs towards her room. Sighing again Y/N untangled herself from Marley's caramel arms Opening the door ajar Y/N smiled “Sorry Tom I was just so absorbed in the storming of the Bastille.” Tom nodded proudly unlike Chlo and Mika Y/N was yet to have a breakdown about her studying where she’d threaten to leave Waterloo Road before her final exams. “So Pizza?” Tom questioned “It might help get your study on.” he seconded adding an odd attempt at dancing. “Umm yeah sure.” the teen stated glancing behind her shoulder quickly Y/N nodded absentmindedly. “Something wrong? Is there someone here?” he began to interrogate her leaning over to push the door open. “So how about that pizza then?” the y/h/c girl started moving to close her door. Shaking his head Tom frowned “No what’s going on. Move.” this time he shoved the door only to see the usually unmade bed and school work littering the desk. “See nothing.” Y/N exclaimed moving shut the door again.
If only Marley was smaller or more nimble maybe they wouldn’t be in this situation maybe they could of continued to hide their blossoming relationship.
“A Kelly? Really Y/N! Could you have picked a worse choice.” The older man screamed waving his arms around. “You didn’t like Donte when Chlo started dating him and now you’re practically best buds!” she screamed back defensively. “NO. NO, THAT IS DIFFERENT.” Tom yelled aggressively stabbing his finger through the tense air. “He’s not his family Tom.” Y/N whispered softly walking away with Marley trailing behind her turning to face the man the girl continued “And you’re not mine..."

hihi, my name’s elijah and this is my angel alexa. she’s one of the first muses I ever rp’d almost ten years ago so I hope y’all grow to love her as much as I do.
( ELIZABETH LAIL, 27, FEMALE, SHE/HER ). I just saw ALEXA GRAINGER running around Freeridge, I wonder what they’re up to? Maybe they’re busy working as an ENGLISH TEACHER. Either way, word around town is that they’re known for being BUBBLY, but also MISCHIEVOUS but I wouldn’t be so quick to judge them. + ( elijah, 23, GMT, she/her. )
Tumblr media
Alexa Marie Grainger was born in Manchester, England to Isobelle and Harry Grainger. She was their youngest out of four girls: Chloe, Mika, Honey and then, Alexa. The girls’ father left when Alexa was only a few months old so she has no memories of him growing up. He made a brief reappearance in her life when she was in high school but naturally, he ended up running off again. She always had a close relationship with her mother and three sisters.
Despite having a pretty good childhood, everything started to go downhill when she started high school. She fell in with the wrong crowd and became rebellious and constantly getting into trouble. This naturally lead to tensions at home, made worse with the fact that her mother was a teacher at her school. She remained close to her sisters but her relationship with her mother became rocky.
During this time, her mother married another teacher at the school, Tom. He had always been one of her favourite teachers and so she never had an issue with him dating and then marrying her mother. She became very close to her new stepfather and started to see him as the father figure that she never had. He was more understanding in Alexa’s rebellion than her mother was.
In her final three years of high school, her whole life turned upside down. Her mother fell ill, during which time they set aside their differences and reformed the bond they once had, but due to complications of her illness she died. Alexa seemed to handle it as well as one could, but more tragedy lurked around the corner. Around a year later, her stepfather died in a freak car accident. She had no parental figures in her life, and just when it seemed that Alexa was starting to get her shit together, she spiralled out of control. She found a coping mechanism in alcohol and drugs, and after a few months of partying she spiralled into a deep depression and began self-harming. She felt a mixture of hate towards herself, towards her family for always leaving her and her sisters and a hate towards the world in general. It was also during this time that her boyfriend and first love, Paul, couldn’t deal with Alexa’s current state and the two broke up leaving her even more distraught and resulting in her planning her own suicide, but thankfully her sisters intervened before she went through with her plan.
This was a wake up call for Alexa and with the help of her sisters, she got the professional help and care she needed and managed to scrape through her exams and graduate high school. Taking a year out to focus on her recovery, she then went on and began studying to become an English teacher (the subject that both her mother and stepfather taught) and once she was qualified, decided that she wanted to leave Manchester and its ghosts behind.
This brings Alexa to where she is now: Freeridge. Moving elsewhere in the UK wasn’t enough, and although she was reluctant to leave her sisters and misses them like crazy, she took the plunge and moved to California. She’s been here for a year and a half now, teaching English at the local high school. She can’t see herself ever leaving and going back to dreary England.
However, despite how things may seen, Alexa’s past is catching up to her. She appears innocent, friendly, your typical polite Brit on the outside, but there’s an internal struggle between two people: the person she is in Freeridge and the person she was in Manchester. It’s only a matter of time before the ‘old Lex’ breaks out.

Jack Rimmer #2
Tumblr media
Y/N inhaled the choking grey smoke her y/e/c eyes flickering over the fellow students donned in the familiar maroon and yellow stripes. Sighing heavily the girl adjusted her worn Doc Marten covered foot against the crumbling wall. Waterloo road housed the scum of the education world in Rochdale - in fact not even the scum but the bacteria that feasted on the scum. Waterloo was the dumping ground of the failing and failed. Taking another drag of her cigarette the girl sighed again this time rolling her eyes in response to the idiot who decided now was the time to interrupt her, turning to face the arrogant intruder she was greeted with Jack Rimmer smiling at her lighting his own cigarette. Jack Rimmer was Headmaster at Waterloo Road and thought he liked to seem like he had his shit together he didn't. “What do you want Jack” Y/N whispered bitterly stomping on the butt of her cig turning to leave. “It’s Mr Rimmer once you’re through those gates and you know it.” the older man stated grabbing the girls forearm gently turning her around to face him. “Mr Rimmer is it now?! That not what you were begging me to call you over the summer.” she huffed the anger inside her ready to explode like a shaken up bottle of coke. Jack sighed running a hand over his face “That was a mistake!” he stated in an attempt to defend himself. “a mistake… really. God Jack you really are pathetic” renching her arm from the man aggressively stalking off “You know that’s not what I meant” he trailed off trying to pick the right words to express how he was feeling but it was too late she'd already left for form.
Mika Grainger kept glancing worryingly at the y/h/c girl throughout their french lesson. Y/N was almost as talented as Brett with the language but unlike her boyfriend her best friend had actually studied hard for her grades. “Whats up” Mika whispered quietly in the hope Ms Haydock wouldn’t catch them talking when they were meant to be practising their verbs. “Nothing”Y/N shrugged off her concerned friend doodling in her workbook. Suddenly the classroom door open “Ms Haydock can I borrow Y/N L/N please. It’s urgent” Jack questioned not even stopping to listen to Haydock's flirty response. Closing the door to his office Jack moved to slide the partitioning glass shut as well. “You weren’t a mistake!” he shouted gruffly trapping her between him and the desk. “Then why did you say I was” tears gathering. “I thought you regretted it”he whispered bringing his hands up to cup her y/s/t face “If i’’d regretted it I wouldn't have let it continue” Y/N cried wiping the tears away delicately “I love you Jack Rimmer.” the girl whispered “Even if you are an idiot sometimes” she continued gently. “I love you more Y/N L/N. I was just worried you wouldn’t want an old man like me.” he said ghosting kisses all over her face. “Just kiss me old man!” the y/h/c girl whispered into his ear tugging on his tie. “You’re going to be the death of me” Jack declared kissing her feverishly.
