I tend to dislike when people use terms meant for interpersonal abuse to describe the behaviour of politicians or whole institutions. like saying the mainstream media “mass gaslights” people about covid is not a coherent way to understand politics, and conveys a level of intimate intent onto political mechanisms whose violence is overwhelmingly impersonal. and I think framing systemic issues, eg the financial interests embedded in corporate media and journalism, as synonymous with domestic abuse or interpersonal violence can encourage conspiratorial thinking, implicitly arguing that the violence and inequality of society is the result of mass amounts of people individually scheming for the downfall of the average person, as opposed to the much more banal fact that systemic inequality and violence is the result of systems that function independent to the whims of individuals working within them (ie, cops would still be racist even if every single one of them were personally individually anti-racist because their profession is a pillar of white supremacy). and furthermore, this language locates the solution to these issues as being housed within individuals - gaslighting is a manipulation tactic to gain power over someone you know interpersonally in a conflict, and so presumably the way to get the media to stop “gaslighting” the public is to slap the wrists of news anchors and journalists and tell them to stop lying to people. Which not only is that not going to work, it again obscures the myriad financial and political interests bound up in the infrastructure of western media.

HOWEVER, absent this language, it’s hard to describe how it feels when walking into a pharmacy or grocery store and seeing everyone not wearing masks, looking at you weirdly for still wearing one, and generally acting like a global pandemic never happened
